QB Hutson Mason considers transfer due to lack of playing time

ATHENS – Georgia backup quarterback Hutson Mason said he is seriously considering transferring due to a lack of playing time behind starter Aaron Murray.

Mason, a sophomore from Marietta, said he would prefer to remain at Georgia — “I love this place even more than I expected,” he said – and would consider taking a redshirt year next season to put a year between him and Murray.

In any case, Mason said he will have to make a decision after the Bulldogs’ season is completed with the Jan. 2 Outback Bowl against Michigan State.

“I’ll just try to sit back and get away from the every day stuff and people telling me what I should do,” Mason said. “I’ll go home after the bowl game and talk to my family and talk to people I look up to. I talked to D.J. Shockley. He’s somebody who has been very valuable to me. I’m just trying to look at it from every angle. I ponder on it a lot and it’s extremely tough.”

Mason (6-foot-3, 200 pounds) signed with Georgia in 2010 after becoming the state high school record holder for passing yards (4,560) and touchdowns (54) as a senior at Lassiter High. But after his second full season with the Bulldogs, he has gotten minimal playing time and then only in mop-up duty.

In two seasons, Mason has appeared in eight games, completing 57 percent of his passes for 356 yards with 3 TDs and no interceptions. His first college play from scrimmage was a TD pass to Logan Gray.

“He’s got an uncanny ability to hit the open receiver,” quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said. “He has great vision and feel. He has great pocket presence and a very quick release. He throws all the intermediate balls extremely well. The deep ball is something we continue to work on that he’s got to improve on. But his ability to get rid of the ball quickly and spread it out underneath, he does very well.”

Bobo said that the Bulldogs are considering redshirting Mason next season and have current redshirt freshman Christian LeMay and walkons handle the backup duties. But it’s not something they’ve decided on yet.

“It’s something we’re going to talk about after the season,” Bobo said. “I’d rather not get into it now.”

Redshirting is something Mason said he would consider.

“I would. It’s something I’ll have to sit down and talk to Coach Richt about and see how they feel about it,” Mason said. “I don’t think that would be something that they’d be opposed to. I want to stay here. I really do. I want to be here; I want to be at UGA. I love this place more than I expected I would. My goal is to stay here and I want to stay here. I just need to find out whether that allows me to play the most or not.”

Mason probably would have played more by now if he hadn’t been behind one of the most durable quarterbacks in the business. Despite taking numerous shots the last two seasons, Murray has missed only a couple of snaps in any significant, meaningful games.

“You can’t take away from Aaron being that tough,” Mason said with a laugh. “It’s just the way the ball rolls. You see guys have severe injuries when they barely get hit and then you see Aaron take a shot like he did against Auburn, where he did a quadruple flip and landed on his neck. I’m like, ‘he’s got to come out after that.’ But he just gets up and trots back to the huddle.”

Malcome on top of depth chart

Redshirt freshman Ken Malcome is currently running No. 1 at tailback for the Bulldogs. Leading rusher Isaiah Crowell is No. 2 and Brandon Harton is No. 3.

That’s the way it was as of Saturday, at least, as Richard Samuel (ankle) and Carlton Thomas (knee) remained sidelined. Samuel, however, was able to practice in a limited role on Saturday. He is returning for the bowl from Nov. 1 ankle surgery.

“We expect both those other guys back, but it’s hard to have a real full-fledged competition when they’re not getting an reps,” Bobo said. “So Ken and Isaiah and Brandon are the only three we’ve got right now.”

Injury update

Starting right guard Chris Burnette did not at practice Saturday due to an illness, line coach Will Friend said. . . . Middle linebacker Mike Gilliard (ankle) and defensive end DeAngelo Tyson (ankle), both starters, still were not practicing on Saturday. . . . Wide receiver Rantavious Wooten, out since late September with a concussion caused by a car accident, is practicing in a green jersey. He will not play in the bowl, however, to preserve a medical redshirt season.

And what does it mean Aaron Murray will be gone after next season ?

He supposed to get drafted then or what ?

If Mason feels he’s been given a raw deal by Richt then he should transfer. If LeMay is the second coming of Cam Newton, then he better transfer before Richt moves him to tight end. I might be dumb, but what’s dumber? Paying full price of admission at the Ga.Dome for only one half of the game, twice, or giving Richt a long term extension for more mediocrity?

Mason is between a rock and a hard place. If he red-shirts, he will allow Lemay to become the #2, who will be hard to beat out in ‘13.

If he waits for Richt to intentionally allow the Dawgs to blow out a SEC team to get playing time, he will wait for ever. It’s not in Richt’s DNA to score more than he has to in order to win.

I love Murray, but he has yet, in 2 seasons, to lead UGA to a win over a favored opponent. Richt/Bobo are crazy to NOT put Mason in when Murray is throwing pics, and missing open receivers.

“In the next couple of seasons I believe that CMR will not be able to keep signing QB’s like he has been able to do. Mason and LeMay both will be leaving I predict. Richt just refuses to give any meaningful game reps to anybody but the starter.”

Right on, too, BullDogMike. You hit the nail on the head. Mark Richt in his 11 seasons to-date, has utterly refused to prepare his back-up Quarterback AT ALL. The only 1 time he did, it was because Coach Donald Shockley, local high school coach, made Mark Richt promise to HIM that he would play his son early in every single game – if HE allowed Mark Richt to Redshirt DJ in 2001. Other than that, NO BACK-UP ever brought in no matter WHAT THE SCORE blown-out or Winning by a large margin.

Boise State brought their back-up QB in in the 1st Quarter against us. In fact, he played every quarter. It did not seem to mess up the rhythm of Kellen Moore 1 iota.

Aaron Murray is not getting the job done around here. We play Favorites. Joe Cox, for example with his chronic throwing shoulder keeping out of practice every single week he was on our campus. He gets the flu before we play Okie State and has to fly out there on a private charter because of it. Does Mark Richt get a single QB in that game, for example, for as many as 1 play against this Okie State team who even with their win over us 10-24, still does not even end up in the top 25.

No.

If Mason redshirts next year, he will be a RS Soph when Murray is a senior (assuming Murray stays 4 years). But won’t LeMay also be a RS Soph that same year? If that’s the case, he will be in the same position he is in now unless he can beat out LeMay.

The UGA needs to remove the buyout from Richt’s contract and add a couple of years if that makes Mark feel better. Raise his pay if that helps get the buyout removed. If you give him more years with a buyout then the AD is stupid and the UGA fans will pay the price. The DC is supplying the discipline at this point and if he goes UGA is done…again. Just look at how Crowell has conducted himself this year!! You folks can’t be this stupid not to see Crowell has no respect for Richt or UGA. If it comes from Columbus then you need to avoid.

I would Leave is I were Hudson. He has way too good an Arm to Have wasted it this Long. He should have gone to Kentucky. He’d be their starter.

I have said it and will continue. Murray is a Talented Player. Just not a good QB. It will take Him Two more years to Fully Figure out the Sec. Then ya got to start over empty handed.

If it hurts a kids confidence to have someone looking over his shoulder then he’s not the man ya need. Competition helps a winner. Competition hurts Murry??? What does that say. (ALL) that needs to be said. Murry can’t hit the wide open reciever??? Can He??? Mason doesn’t miss. HuH!!!

I like CMR. But he could win a National Championship and I’d still like to see a coach that’d grab a facemask over CMR. He’s just too nice.

To all who proclaim Mason has looked DYN-O-MITE, I agree that he has…against the SCRUB DEFENSES. The only reason UGA recruited him in the first place was because they were thin on QB’s. Why do you think no other major schools went after the kid….it’s because he’s just not that good. Mason is so typical of “everybody’s an MVP” type kid our society tries to dictate to us. He doesn’t get his way so he’ll “transfer”. Well Mason I don’t think we’ll miss you one bit and I hope you like riding the pine at Fruit Loop U because you’re just not good enough to be a Division I starter.

Yes, Aaron Murray started here on our campus December 2008 practicing for the Michigan State bowl game. 2009 he was redshirted. 2010, he as our Leader led us to a season which we have to go back 58 years to 1953 to find an UGA team who lost more games, losing to all teams who finished in the top 25 at 0-5 and 2 more losses to teams who did not finish top 25 and fired their coaches even after he lost to them. 2011, he lost to every team who finished top 25 again, and has for his career now gone 0-8. He has run up his stats throwing 45 TD Passes vs teams who did not finish top 25 and only 12 TD passes in the 8 games vs teams who did end up top 25. He has specifically been at his VERY WORST in the key games against the teams who in fact ended the seasons in the top 25. He has 20 fumbles and 20 interceptions with a 1-yard a carry average for his 7 carries a game his entire career. 2012, he ain’t getting no NFL Draft Selection declared or not declared, as a Redshirt Junior. 2013, he will still be here being the only QB played as BullDogMike points out. He will AGAIN go undrafted in the NFL Draft, and will NEVER PLAY A DOWN IN THE NFL – his stated goal. His Sophomore Slump this 2011 season, was preceded by a better season last season than this season to-date. He has gone backwards.

Christian LeMay is Redshirted this season having enrolled early this time last year practicing with the team for the Liberty Bowl against Southern Florida of Conference USA, with Aaron Murray STINKING UP THAT GAME TO HIGH-HEAVEN TOO 6-10, despite the play of the special teams and despite the play of our Defense. Christian LeMay will be a Redshirt Freshman next season, who will not get into a single game and play any minutes. That is 2012. So, yes when Aaron Murray goes as an UNDRAFTED free-agent after the 2013 season finally GONE – Good Riddance – Christian LeMay will be a Redshirt Sophomore, who will not have played any that season either. Unprepared for a QB change AGAIN this braintrust on Offense will have no QB ready for the 2014 season which will be the Redshirt Junior year for Christian LeMay and the 1st season we can hope to have a QB will EVEN SHOW-UP for the big-games against the teams who end up that season in the top 25 either.

“The most important thing to me is I want to play, whether that’s here or somewhere else. I don’t know where that’s at,” said Mason, who was also initially offered by Iowa and later Virginia and Mississippi State. “I know I can play here, I’ve seen the improvements I’ve made and I probably go against the No. 2, 3 or 4 defense in the country every day and to see yourself succeed and make strides every single day, it gives you confidence that you can play at this level and you can play anywhere.”

If this young man didn’t believe that he’s better qb than Aaron Murray he wouldn’t be contemplating leaving uga. If Zach Mettenberger didn’t believe that he’s a better qb than Aaron Murray he wouldn’t have gotten upset when Mr.Richt announced that Murray will be his starter. Everybody knows Mettenberger looked better than Murray in that G-DAY game.

I was Aaron Murray’s biggest supporter but the young man is too inconsistent and he doesn’t make smart decisions against good teams. Why isn’t Mr.Richt aware of this?

Richt’s inconsistant philosophy of running backs must block before they play and the one starter at QB regardless will never allow UGA to ever have a good transistion from Senior QB who started four years without much back up experience…Then you have non tested One year wonders then Freshmen or Redshirt freshmen with talent on the bench with no experience. UGA has really been fortunate over the years that David Greene, Stafford, and Murray never actually got hurt and missed games. Now if Mason leaves that leaves non scholorshipped or a redshirt freshman to come in….Always been disaster in the making…it just has not happened yet… But the running backs and Receivers rotate. I think the rotation of Shockley what little it was was always poor timing when used. He never was hot when he entered the game. Now no one is ever hot when they enter the game. Has Murray not improved due to the lack of perceived competition. Just seems not a good idea not to let the back up play more.. But we have not been in many blow out games in the SEC to allow backups to play. LSU had to use a backup due to discipline problems….We have not had that in the QB position since Carter and Donnan did not use anyone else regardless. Go Dawgs

That is BS.

Florida State offered Hutson Mason a Scholarship to play Quarterback at FSU. Indiana, Mississippi State, Virginia, and many others offered Hutson Mason a Scholarship. A good kid, with a 3.0 GPA Deans List and Honor Rolls at UGA, Hutson Mason has DONE EVERYTHING ASKED OF HIM. He has NOT tweeted prior to the Boise State game what he was going to do in the Georgia Dome, as did Aaron Murray. He has not nor will he DECLARE for the NFL Draft to see what the NCAA College Football Advisory Committee has to say about him. He’s NOT THAT IMMATURE. Huston Mason is a BETTER LEADER than Aaron Murray. Hutson Mason doesn’t hold on to the football too long, nor throw his passes so poorly as Aaron Murray consistently does. He DOES SHOW-UP for the big-games against the teams who do finish in the top 25. He was NOT YANKED in the last game, as was Aaron Murray. He is bigger than Aaron Murray. There is no way he would have played against South Carolina last year or this year as did Aaron Murray. There is no way he played as poorly against LSU as did Aaron Murray. There is no way he would have played as miserably against Mississippi State last year as Aaron Murray. There is no way he would have played as poorly as Aaron Murray did against Florida last year. There is no way Hutson Mason would have played as badly as Aaron Murray vs Boise State this season, either. There is no way he would play as poorly as Aaron Murray will play in the next game vs Michigan State. There is no way Hutson Mason would have played as poorly as Aaron Murray did against Colorado either.

If Hutson Mason was ever given a chance to play in a real game, I belive he would be easily outshine CMR’s boy Murray. Murray’s the starter because CMR likes the fact that he does all this film study and tries to act like a leader. Just because you look at alot of film, doesn’t mean it is going to make you something special on the field. QB is the one position on the entire team where I believe there is no open competion each week. I also believe that reguardless of what Murray does in a game (2-3 interceptions or 2-3 fumbles) he’ll remain in the game. We could of easily won the USC game if Murray doesn’t throw a pick 6 or fumble near the goal line for another easy TD (we only lost by 3). That game cost us a BCS bowl game and a top 10 ranking. Mason is taller than Murray and can see down field better plus his release is a lot quicker than Murray’s. Just like Mettenbeger, if Mason transfers to another school,he’ll lead his team to a championship just like Mett will do for LSU. The sad thing for me being a UGA fan is Murray is going to be here 2 more years, because no way he’ll be a NFL QB and leave early.

What is happening at Georgia? RIcht can’t win any big games. Loses big to LSU in the SEC championship game. All his players want to turn pro early because he can’t win the big game and they want to run before their careers are ruined. Now…..the best QB on the team wants to transfer because the coach can’t see who the best QB is. All the second string players now want to transfer. Georgia’s long run at winning championships is obviously over. No hope for Georgia now. What will Georgia do when Mason is gone. Lose. Lose. Lose. Lose….and all the recruits will leave now. No hope for Georgia. No hope for Georgia fans. Might as well go jump off the bandwagon train now…and before summer gets here.

Wow, I wonder if Murray’s lack of improvement and Hudson’s lack of playing has anything to do with the coaching ability of Bobo and Richt. Defense improves, Why not QB’s or the Offense? His release and accuracy look to be superior to Murray, even in his limited playing time.

Personal attacks,

I believe they had an open contest in spring and fall training camps this year for starting QB, and Murray cam out on top. Being a QB has more to do than just throwing passes. You have to be able to control the team, be the leader and be able to take a hit as well. Murray has shown the ability to do those things. Tell me in all honesty that you think Mason, or LeMay would have been the difference in winning or losing the 3 games we lost this year. Football is a team sport, and Murray is one of the best team players UGA has on that field. I would bet you would find out, if you talked to the players on that team, how much Murray means to that team. Like I said, it is a team sport. One guy seldom loses or wins the game for a team, and Murray is no different in that respect.
You say he hasn’t won against any top 25 teams. Nobody presently on this team for the last two years has either. His own team mates voted him the offensive MVP of the team at the recent team awards banquet. That should tell you something I think.
Next year, looks like a good year, because with the RB’s we have, we will have a more balanced attack. Murray probably will not have to throw 33 touch down passes, no matter against what team, in order for UGA to win. When he does have to throw or the play is designed as a pass, he will have receivers that now, with the exception of a senior King, have a season under their belts.Hopefully, the OL will give him some time to throw this year. Pass protection was not as near good, as the rush blocking was. He deserves to start, since he has been in the battle for the last two years, when UGA has been struggling at both the offense and defense. UGA has a fairly easy schedule next year again, due to a lot of rebuilding of divisional teams, but I don’t think there will be as many close wins as this year. S.C. might be tough, because they are pretty good at defense, but I think UGA’s defense is better against their offense than the other way around so I think UGA gets the win.

Looks like Richt’s setting it up where Mason transfers or redshirts, then Lemay can start rotating in certain series throughout the game, like DJ used to do, and of course if Lemay does a lot better than Murray in those opportunities, it won’t matter until Murray graduates. So it’s risky for Lemay or Mason to stay, because neither will ever start a game until Murray graduates, because no NFL team will want Murray so he won’t be leaving early.

He beat UF, if he had not Mark Richt may not have a job and we would not have won the East Division. Stafford, Greene, Shockley, Tarkington, Carter and Messenburger are all gone. TreDog

If you look back at what Richt’s done at UGA, only 1 year did he play 2 QB’s, and DJ got pretty limited reps that year. If Lemay or Mason want to start a game, or even get a lot of reps this upcoming season, they’ll have to rransfer, Richt’s not going to suddenly change his habits on QB. Richt didn’t even bench Joe Cox after Cox threw 11 interceptions in the first few games. Didn’t bench Murray after several 3 or 4 turnover games (SC/UF/UCF 2010 & LSU 2011 Murray should have bench after 2nd turnover in 3rd quarter).

Murray got worse this year in yards, accuracy, passer rating, and is still winless against a team that finished in the top 25 (0-7 record now). Yet Mason or Lemay didn’t get a start or significant reps. The schedule was easy this year, only played 3 teams that ended up in top 25, and went 0-3 there, and went 10-0 against the bad teams. Just like last year with Murray at QB.

Mason could start at LSU tomorrow. Play him more. He is a mistake-free winner like David Greene. He should be allowed to compete with Murray regularly in live game action. We could then be sure that we find the man that has all the qualities that can take us to the big time. If he transfers, he will be a star somewhere else.

Chic Fil A is and has always been ( even when it was the Peach) a joke of a bowl. Sorry.

UGA spotted VaTech about 24 or 27 points about 4 or 5 years ago, then roared back ( we were angy about being in that sad lil bowl) and ultimately stomped VaTech. Typical ACC team they are.

UGA also stomped Maryland in the 70s, when they had that so called all world linebacker that played for the NFL Cowboys. He showed me nothing that night. Randy White was his name. Typical over hyped ACC all star. MD did not score.

Murry is not a Big Gamer even though he is Good: UGA will never win the big Dance with him. He is like a deer in headlights when under pressure and fumbles and drops the ball way too much… Did you see Hudson M in the last drive of the SEC Champ Game. He took us down the field and we drop the ball in Zone as ususal. He is taller, stronger arm and thows more like a AAron Rogers…. If he would have gone to South Carolina, They would have been in SEC Champ game. Why do all these QB s go and stand behind a 4 year player when they could go somehere else and play everday.. They all have to wake up, do same drills, so why have to do all this and not play for 3 years. It make no sense….

“Personal attacks will NOT be tolerated hate-filled harassing posts unacceptable”, Did Murray beat you up and take your lunch money? You are the same person who uses different handle and the same meaningless stats , on every Georgia blog. Who cares what a pro style offense rushing stats are?
What were Staffords rushing stats, who cares , the Qb in this offense is there to pass the ball, and hand off to the tailback. very few designed running plays for the qb, this offense doesn’t want the qb to run. My Guess is your a frustrated tech fan since you change your handle so often. Have fun in El Paso.

You guys bashed Joe Cox unmercifully, but you have to admit that he committed to UGA and stuck it out even though he was not playing until his senior year. He would have had a better senior season had Richt played him more when games were in hand or when Stafford struggled—even if just for a series or two for Matt to get his head straight. One reason UGA QBs make mistakes in big games is that they know they are not coming out no matter what
