ATHENS — There was not a ton of news to be found Friday at Georgia’s Outback Bowl media briefing at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall, but a lot of interesting commentary and discussion. We determined that tight end Orson Charles, saftey Bacarri Rambo and quarterback Aaron Murray (yes, you read that right) turned in their paperwork to be evaluated by the NFL for the draft. We also learned that outside linebacker Jarvis Jones did not fill out said paperwork. He’s sticking with his earlier declaration to return next season, despite multiple All-America awards and the becoming the SEC sack leader.
I’ll have more details in a later report but, in a nutshell, it seems as though Charles and Rambo are really struggling with their decisions. Murray, eligible to be drafted as a redshirt (or third-year) sophomore, said he’s not really contemplating an early leap at this time but was just curious to see what NFL scouts had to say about his game and how it might eventually translate to the pros.
In the meantime, head coach Mark Richt reiterated his devotion to remaining at UGA as long as the school will have him, confirmed he never heard a peep from Texas A&M or Penn State and expressed gratification for what was characterized as an imminent contract extension. He also talked about re-opening the tailback competition on the grounds of poor production the last third of the season. And it sounds as though he expects Isaiah Crowell and everybody else to be eligible to participate in the Jan. 2 game.
Following is a transcription of Richt’s remarks followed by some comments from a few players.
Head Coach Mark Richt
Opening Statement:
“It is a great day for the University of Georgia in that it’s graduation day. We had a lot of student-athletes graduate today. We had 10 today from football. A couple of them had been playing pro football for a few years and came back and finished up. We’ve been averaging about 19 football players a year graduating over the last 11 seasons. We’re just so proud of them, and it’s fun to see those guys at the tail ends of their careers and seeing their families and the young men themselves be so excited about getting that sheepskin. Congratulations to all of those guys. Everybody else got to practice today. It was a great day, beautiful. It felt like the first day of spring ball. There was a lot of lively competition. I think we had a little scrap here and there. There was just a great spirit about everybody. I thought the effort was great. I thought we got better today fundamentally and at a competitive level. You definitely either get better or get worse, and I think we got better today. That was nice.
“We know we’re in for a tremendous challenge. I’m aware that (Michigan State) is pretty hungry for a bowl victory right now, but they have a lot of maturity and a lot of winners to go get after it. So we have to make sure we are ready to get after it too.”
On whether motivation for a bowl game:
“This game has a bigger feel, having a dual purpose and a dual motivation. We want to win this game for a lot of reasons. We’d like to finish with 11 wins. We’ve had seven other teams do that and we’d like to be the eighth team. We would absolutely love for our seniors to walk out of that locker room with a smile on their face. It’s hard to get all excited at the end of your career if the last game you played was a loss. It’s tough. You’re sitting there hugging everybody’s neck and wishing them the best. It’s going to be the last time that team is going to be together, and we want that to be a great victory. It’s also the first game of 2012, and the way everything is set up in the BCS system, I think how you finish has something to do with how people see you when the season begins the next year. I think it’s important for the future too to play well and try to get the victory. There are a lot of reasons why we want to win, and they have the same motivation. They have a great football team and a great group of players and coaches. You turn that film on, and you immediately see that you are playing a well-coached bunch of guys who get after it. We better be ready.”
How last year’s bowl experience might help this year:
“It was just so different a year ago, just the overall spirit of the team by the time we got to that one. We were all professional and we all wanted to do our best. It was hard to have a lot of life. It was a battle. Out there today if you saw those guys, they were fired up about playing football. They were enjoying each other and had a great day. I think we’ve learned to understand that we get to play in a bowl game; we don’t have to play in a bowl game. I think the guys are excited about the opportunity. I think overall this team has taken on a much more positive outlook on things from the very beginning starting last January.”
On whether Richt and Orson Charles have discussed Charles’ future:
“I’ve not. I would imagine every junior in the United States of America is kind of wondering when is the time and when is not the time. When the regular season is over and there is a little lull between that and the bowl game, I think some of those guys are thinking about it. If you’d been out there watching practice today, he was just soaking it in and enjoying being at Georgia. He’s just kind of an upbeat guy who is just enjoying the experience right now. I’m sure somewhere along the line he’s going to sit down and figure out what he wants to do.”
On Orson Charles’ place among the tight ends in Georgia history:
“Orson is a very talented guy. He’s not like a big giant guy when it comes to blocking, but he blocks bigger than he is. Because he’s not this big lumberjack, he’s a sleek receiver. He can run routes, he can change direction, he can catch the ball .You can split him out and play receiver. You can keep him at tight end and he’s legitimate. Some guys will line up in the tight end position, but they’re not tight ends in my opinion because they can’t block like they can. Some tight ends will flex out as a third receiver, but they’re not really a third receiver. This guy is a legitimate third receiver and a legitimate blocker. We try to take advantage of those guys best we can and hope to continue to do that.”
On Richard Samuel’s status:
“We expect him to play in the game. He got some run polish, I guess it was today. We weren’t ready to go full bore with him yet, but we expect him to play. I would imagine when we get to the bowl site he would do everything would be my guess from what I’ve heard from Ron (Courson). He may go full speed tomorrow. I haven’t talked to Ron yet.”
On whether he would consider moving Samuel or another tailback to fullback next year…
“No, of the bunch of tailbacks right now, we would not put anybody at fullback. Richard I would definitely not put at fullback, none of those kids. If they came and asked me and begged me, I don’t know. I don’t see those guys as being the fullback type.”
On how much Richard Samuel has been missed while injured…
“Richard has been around the program a while. This is his fourth year. He’s got some maturity about him, and that group had a lot of inexperience. When he was in there they were just a little more grown up. There was more stability there and more maturity there, so we definitely missed him. Just as a player he’s a powerful back. He had a couple of great moments before when he played tailback, but as far as a game his last game he played when he got hurt, I think that was his best performance. I think he thought it was his best performance. Sometimes you need one of those games to give you the confidence to do it every single game. I think he was just hitting his stride and he got slowed up. I would say by the time we play the game he will have run the ball enough and changed direction enough. Hopefully he doesn’t have much rust on him at all.”
On having an open competition at running back…
“Do you guys think anybody established themselves as a solid starter at the tailback position? I’m not seeing that. Competition is a good thing, so I’m looking forward to it.”
An update on Mike Gilliard’s progress towards returning to action from injury…
“I just saw him walking on the field here towards the end of practice. He did have a boot on, but he was not on crutches, he wasn’t very ginger. His gait was good, and if you didn’t look down below his knees you would say he was just walking normal. So I thought that was a good sign, but I have no idea for what that means for practicing in the next couple of days. Richard (Samuel) we expect to play unless there is some kind of set back. Michael we are hoping he can play.”
On player’s he has coached throughout his career, if there has been a more scrutinized player than Isaiah Crowell…
“I won’t talk specifically to Isaiah’s notoriety, but nowadays the way the recruiting process is guys become bigger than life before they even walk on the campus. That’s a tough responsibility for anybody to try to live up and to feel like you are just a regular guy when all of a sudden every move you do make somebody has got a comment on it or an opinion about it. That’s got to be tough. I’ve talked to Isaiah. I’ve talked to other guys like (Matthew) Stafford, (Knowshon) Moreno and A.J. (Green) about learning to deal with the notoriety, the celebrity of it. I get to live with certain things, but you have to know that when you walk out the door to grab a bite to eat or something more than likely someone is going to come up to you and speak to you and maybe want an autograph, a picture or something like that. It’s just kind of part of the thing, and you just kind of used to the fact that people watch you and are interested in what you say and do. That’s tough on a kid that young. I’m pretty much of a full grown man I think most of the time. That’s kind of hard to get used to myself, but I don’t want to start a speech.”
With exams wrapping up this week is everyone going to be eligible…
“I have not talked to our academic people yet. I asked a bunch of kids today how they are doing and everybody seemed to be thinking things went well. I know going into it there weren’t any major concerns but there’s always a chance somebody blows up. Going into these rounds of exams it wasn’t like we were holding our breath on anything.”
On if grades will be posted at a certain time that he knows of…
“I’m sure they will, but I don’t know when the deadline is and I have not asked. Two days ago I started at 6 a.m. and got in at midnight. Yesterday, we practiced, went straight to the airplane, recruited and got in after midnight, got up went to graduation, did practice and came here, so really I haven’t had much time to do anything other than recruit and coach.”
If it is gratifying to be having contract extension talks…
“Oh yeah. I know I had a comment that went out, but I love Georgia. It’s a great place. It’s our home. I want it to remain our home for a long time. I’m thankful that Georgia wants me to be here, and I certainly want to be at Georgia and now we just got to talk about terms and all that kind of thing. All the talks we’ve had have been very positive and upbeat. It is about the head coach sometimes because if the coach’s contract is long enough everybody has a little bit of peace and has a sense that there is stability within the program. All that is going to happen, but there are other things that we talk about too. Student-athlete welfare stuff or maybe we can do this or that. He might see something that he would like me to improve and I might say we want to work on some kind of facility issue. What I’m saying is we’ve just had some great talks, not only about extending my contract, but what can we do to be the ‘Best in America’ type talks too, which is exciting. There are no great details to talk about, but it’s an atmosphere of sensing the excitement of what the future is holding for Georgia. I feel like we’ve created a lot of really positive momentum and just want to keep it going. We want to do everything it takes to keep it going.”
On if his future has been something he’s had to address in recruiting…
“There’s been some that have just come out and said ‘I’d like my son to go to Georgia, but I’m not sure what is going on’ maybe in the summer or after the second game of the year. So there were some people that would just come out and say that, and there were others that maybe through the high school coach would say ‘coach, if everything was set he would have done it a month ago.’ You hear some of that type of conversation going on. Now that everything is real solid in that way I got a feeling there will be a few guys that were kind of holding back or maybe deciding on another school or rethinking what they are doing because they feel really good about what is happening at Georgia right now.”
If UGA has been playing catch up in the recruiting process because of that…
“Yes. I guess that’s a good way to say it. We really felt like we were going to have a really good class or had the makings of a really good class. We knew the more we won the better chance we would have to nail a great one. I think we still have the potential for a really great class.”
If midseason enrollees can participate in bowl practice…
“They can but we are not going to do that. What happens is if the underclassmen participate in a bowl practice they can’t play in these all-star games, so that’s kind of stopped that a little bit. The other thing is that it used to be that they not only could practice on your site they could go to the bowl with you. They used to be able to get bowl gifts. Now it’s a little different story. Those guys might have taken the bowl trip rather than playing in an all-star game and they had to weight that out. I think it’s good. I don’t think they can gain much by practicing once or twice. It’s awkward. They don’t know what they are doing. They’re not going to be confident. I don’t think it’s a good idea.”
Injury updates for Derrick Lott and Drew Butler…
“Derrick sprained he ankle in practice yesterday. Drew, he sprained his ankle out and about I guess. What happened was he had those shoes you get for tuxedo nights and they are kind of slick and slippery. He slipped, but I don’t know exactly how it happened. You can ask him, but something happened where he slipped because the shoes were kind of slick and it tweaked it.”
On what he is doing to turn special teams around…
“First of all, we know we have got to get better. It’s two things in my opinion that it could be – either what we are doing schematically or its who do we have on those teams. I guess it could be a third thing – are they actually doing what we are asking them to do. In all those areas we must improve. I think there’s going to be a high sense of urgency on our special teams to become more than just decent. We need to become really good. That’s one of the biggest things is that we try to become one of the top teams in the league and the country in special teams play. There will be some very heavy discussions about it. We’ll probably do more special teams work in the spring than we’ve done in the past. We knew we had a great punter, great kicker, holder, snapper and all that kind of thing, but we also knew we had some youth on some of those teams. We lost (Akeem) Dent, (Darryl) Gamble, (Demarcus) Dobbs – I’m trying to think of some of the other guys that were on some of these guys that were on that punt team – they were guys that could protect, escape and run and tackle a guy in the open field. We lost a batch of those guys and we were a little shy on linebacker depth and all that kind of thing, so we just have to keep recruiting those kinds of guys. If we got to put a bunch of starters on defense on some specials or starters at wide receiver or whatever you got to do – tailback. I don’t care what position, we got to get the best guys out there and understand how crucial it is.”
On his thoughts on his name being connected to other jobs…
“(Texas) A&M got bigger than life…I had not been contacted personally. Anybody who could have possibly represented me in any way, shape or form, never said to me A&M is interested. I don’t know where all that came from. That was interesting to me to have that much smoke and no one that I know of got contacted on it. I have not heard a thing or word from Penn State. I’ve never been a guy to try and leverage a situation because the first day I got it here I said I want to be at Georgia. I said I wanted it to be the last coaching job I have. I’m very interested in winning, doing things the right way and stability for my family. I got to see at Florida State the benefits of stability in a coaching staff. I got to see the benefits of guys playing five years ago, six years ago, seven years ago, eight years ago, and coming back and seeing coach (Bobby Bowden). Seeing people he knows, loves and trusts it’s great. I’ve coached with a couple guys along the way that have never seen a class go from freshman to senior in their whole career. They never stayed four or five years anywhere long enough to see a guy through to the end. You see guys like Ben Harden and Justin Anderson and all these guys like Bruce Figgins. You see them in their house when they are 17-year-old kids and then you see them all grown up ready for life. I enjoy that a lot. That’s a big part of why I coach. You don’t get that if you are always looking for something better. There’s always going to be something that might look better, but for me, there is no place that is better.”
On if it gets irritating to have his named come up over the years in regards to other coaching jobs…
“I personally don’t think it’s become that big of an issue. I’ll answer this. Have teams contacted me? Yes. Have people contacted my agents in the past? Yes. But I’ve always behind closed doors, behind the scene said you know what I appreciate your interest but I like it where I’m at and I don’t have any interest. So a lot of things haven’t become a big deal. I haven’t said let me go fly there and take a look. I’ve never done that. I’ve never really wanted to do that because I care about our recruiting class currently. If I know in my heart this is where I want to be then I don’t want to play a game for any reason. All I’m asking is for everything to be as fair as we can. I want to give Georgia my best, and I want Georgia to give us its best.”
On reflecting back to his playing days and the bowl game selection process being more open compared to now bowl games being more structured and which way he likes better…
“All I know is when I was a player we went to one bowl when I was at Miami. It was the Peach Bowl. That was a big deal. We froze our rear ends off. We got a Peach Bowl watch. I gave it to my dad. But I don’t know. I think one that I would be for – and I might get in trouble for this but I hope not – I think it would be interesting to rotate some of the BCS games. Where the SEC may go to the Sugar Bowl this year, go the Fiesta next year and whatever and have people do that. But there is such tradition in the SEC with the Sugar Bowl and the Pac-10 and Big Ten or 12 or whatever they are called now going to the Rose and all that kind of thing. I don’t know if that will ever happen, but I think that would be interesting for fans, players and coaches to have a different destination, a kind of built in rotating destination.”
If there are any concerns with the defense from the second half of the LSU game…
“A lot of the issues were special teams related and turnover related. There’s some times we just got gapped out on a run and it went to the house. I don’t think we left there with problems we can’t solve at all.”

It sure would be nice to hire a special teams coach and an offensive coordinator.
Bobo is a DGD however, a DGOF he is not. I think he lost the SECCG by putting the offense in bad situations that the defense couldn’t bail them out of.

…nowhere – the other two are probably as good as gone – Charles should be no lower than a second rounder, and may even sneak into the first; Rambo will probably be a 2nd to 3rd rounder, as he still has miles to go to be higher, though he did come on strong at the end of the season. He is still raw and will surely benefit from one more year and building on this year, but time will tell –
This is akin to the Stafford year where after UGA was picked to be #1 and tanked they would have been lights out if Stafford and Moreno had come back – next year’s team could also be lights out IF everyone comes back, but at least these two will not, so that will leave some pretty significant holes to fill, especially at tight end and on the corners in the secondary.(Rambo can be replaced more easily)…

They should both stay. They have a slight chance to do something special next year. No reason to rush to the riches unless you are in a position like Staford or AJ.
Murray is not going anywhere NEXT year, much less this year!
CMR will be here for 9 more years. 20 is a nice, round # to leave on and he will have the UGA record for wins.

That would certainly help if Jones sticks with his original intentions and stays another year. I know some of the pro scouting reports said he would fare better by staying in school one more year since he had to take a year off but I’m sure he still would have earned a nice NFL paycheck by leaving now. Of course, the counter argument is what if he gets hurt again and washes out his pro career. Tough choice but definitely a good anchor to build your defense around if he stays.
I would not be surprised if Rambo declared for the draft this year since his stock is pretty high right now. Charles would not be that big of a loss as long as you have a backup that can block because the stable of returning receivers can take care of pass receptions.
Good luck in the Outback and I’m sure MSU is not looking forward to facing another SEC defense in a bowl game!

NCAA will only permit 1 head coach and 9 assistants. The current staff consists of:
Mark Richt Head Coach
Mike Bobo Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach
Todd Grantham Defensive Coordinator/Outside Linebackers Coach
Rodney Garner Recruiting Coordinator/Defensive Line Coach
Tony Ball Wide Receivers Coach
John Lilly Tight Ends Coach
Will Friend Offensive Line Coach
Bryan McClendon Running Backs Coach
Kirk Olivadotti Inside Linebackers Coach
Scott Lakatos Secondary Coach
Mark Richt, as well as many other coaches, prefer to assign different aspects of special teams coverage to his various coaches. I’ll have to agree that whether it’s coaching or execution, special teams is an area that needs improvement.

However, you can’t blame a guy for setting himself up for the future if he has a chance to get drafted pretty high. Demetric Evans has proved that you can have a pretty good career in the NFL and then finish school when you are still a young man.

Wow. That sucks. Rambo would definitely be a bigger loss because Bobo has never had any clue how to use Orson Charles. I mean look at that guy. Look at the way he runs and catches passes. He’s a linebacker with recievers hands. Who in the hell is going to stop him? I just feel like he hasn’t lived up to his potential with Bobo calling the plays. This really isn’t a struggling decision…lol. Either go for the payday or stick around for the only senior season you’ll have in your life. It comes down to this: Orson Charles’ stock cannot get any higher. It can only get worse. And he is a TE. He does not need to show scouts that he can separate from LB’s, run block, or run precise routes. Rambo, on the other hand, can still move up. He still has to show better coverage skills and consistent hands and play-making ability. He’s not a guaranteed 1st rounder like Charles, let alone a first day guy.

Jay Rome the same way, he was the # 1 ranked T.E. in the Country and is bigger and faster than Charles, Plus Lynch is Ready as well. Georgia will be fine the next three to four years.

The nfl is a huge leap. The money lures a lot of these kids away before they are truly ready. Murray is looking for an evaluation report. Surely he is not thinking of trying to go. He’s not close. Charles and Jones are possibilities but as good as they are I still see them needing another year to grow and mature. But hey, if the money talks it’s hard to walk away. And anyway, as far as evaluating nfl talent, I will say what Schultz used to say on Hogan’s Heroes. I know NOTHING!

slydog i slightly disagree with that. OC can move up just because he will be the number 1 tight end in next year’s class. On most draft boards he is 2 or 3 (behind dwayne allen) so if he comes back he will be the number 1 tight end in next years draft. The first tight end usually goes late first round (so he is not a guarenteed 1st round pick) and the second and third tight ends go middle and late second. So he can move up in the draft

Being #2 behind Dewayne Allen is GREAT!!! All the pressure is on Allen to prove it at the combine and all the other pre-draft activities. One team may like Charles better than Allen. Charles did play in a pro style offense and he got better this year. How much more money or draft position are we talking about between #1 and #2? And these two are 1st round talents guaranteed.

Thats always contingent on who or how many teams are seeking a TE. At best this year OC might make the 2nd round but, he might not too. Another year in college would upgrade his stock quite considerably. He still has 2 years eligibility which if he stayed for two years and performed well could considerably move him into early first round which, is where the money is. Pros and cons for going and staying from the money standpoint

I really do not understand why Orson Charles would not enter the NFL Draft. The Draft Boards have OC really high at TE/H-Back. He cannot afford an injury in college. Losing 3 Offensive Linemen will make it a little tougher for Murray to make some of those throws he made this year. I am not buying this talk of being better in 12 with the linemen going and road games that will make it a little tougher to get back to the SECCG.
Rambo and his history of play will probably need to go the NFL. He has some highlights THIS year after 2 years of lowlights…Strike when the flame is hot.

All Murray needs to know is written by this Michigan State writer:
If you have watched the Bulldogs play this season you know that their offense is a tale of two teams. Sometimes they come out and look like world-beaters and sometimes they look anemic.
The key to stopping this offense is getting to quarterback Aaron Murray early. Murray has 35 total touchdowns this season to 12 interceptions. However, he is very streaky.
If the Spartans are able to get to him early his footwork will alter and he will start missing his receivers by five yards. If not, he will pick the Spartans apart.
The running game is hard to gauge for the Bulldogs. Mostly because injuries and suspensions have hindered this team all season in the backfield. Isaiah Crowell is their most recognizable back and won the SEC Freshman of the Year award. However, it is not certain if he will even play.
The Bulldogs offensive line is the biggest in all of college football. However, they have been hit-and-miss as well. The Spartan defensive line will need to get pressure in the backfield to win this game, but this is certainly in the realm of possibility.
This Georgia offense can also become turnover prone. A large portion of the points scored on Georgia this season were the result of turnovers, but it all starts with pressuring Murray.
Hate to see Charles or Rambo leave but money talks.

Jarvis Jones is a pretty impressive Dawg. He has done well and has a great attitude. Jones comes from the same high school as Crowell. They both have similar backgrounds with Jones’s life maybe having been a little tougher growing up. But they both came from the same place and it seems as if Jarvis Jones is making the absolute most out of his particular situation while Crowell has breached the possibility of losing everything. Jarvis Jones would be a great mentor for Isaiah Crowell. He understands Crowell’s background. If you know where a man has been, you can maybe guide him through the new situations life throws at him.

the fact that he’s submitting paperwork to the draft board speaks volumes of how clueless he is about how to be a leader on this team.
Murray,
nfl coaches don’t typically draft players who stare-down receivers and fail to identify 2nd options downfield. look at the tapes….the only time that guy has ever checked-off his primary receiver it’s been for a short pass to the rb less than 5 yds from him or a wild scramble downfield. he has a horrible feel for the game!!!

OkieDawg,
You are right.
We talked to Jarvis Jones after Southern California tried to tell him his sprained neck was dangerous, which he did not buy into. Mark Richt told him if he passed our Doctors, he would give him a Scholarship and play him. He did and he did, and 17 All America 1st Teams he has made this season, more All American teams than any Georgia Bulldog EVER made. Obviously, he has nothing to prove and questions will happen after next year or this year at the Combines. Once we got Jarvis Jones by telling him we would give him a Scholarship, then Jarvis Jones said he would come here. It was AS A RESULT of that that Dell McGee, Columbus Carver great coach and great guy and great Steward to both Jarvis Jones and to Isaiah Crowell (even after all these issues this entire season on the field, off the field, and in the classrooms), then told UGA and then told Isaiah Crowell that he should come here to Mark Richt.
So, Jarvis Jones has been ministering to Isaiah Crowell.
And, the only reason why Isaiah Crowell is here, is because FIRST Mark Richt took Jarvis Jones when others were worried about his sprained neck.
I studied all that at the time, and followed it daily.
Jarvis Jones BROUGHT Isaiah Crowell here. Without Jarvis Jones, we NEVER get Isaiah Crowell.

Aaron Murray was

even the Florida quarterbacks were not that bad.
As badly as 6-6 Florida played, Aaron Murray won as the Starting QB for us by 24-20.
7 times he took us into the Red Zone.
7 times
3 TD
He SETTLED for Field Goals 3 times
Aaron Murray was sacked three (3) times and threw the ONLY INTERCEPTION of the entire game by any quarterback.
We had EVERYBODY of the Running Backs for Florida.
It was Aaron Murray’s fault that the game was only 24-20.
Any other UGA QB and that score was a wipe-out.

A lot of scout’s still have their doubt’s if his neck thing is okay since there was a difference of opinion between Southern Cal doctor’s and the doctor’s at Georgia. If he can stand up physically one more year it will end any doubt’s and should make him at least a middle first round or higher draft choice. Already knowing the 3-4 won’t hurt either.

Rambo and Murray are total idiots to think they can play in the NFL. Rambo has never impressed me, and he is terrible in run support. He hasn’t hit anyone since he got knocked out hitting the Auburn receiver in 2009. He want be missed if he decides to leave. The same can be said for missing in big games Murray. This guy is so overrated, and he always finds ways to help his team lose games. He averages 3 turnovers, either ints, or fumbles in every big game this past year. Good Q.B’s don’t do what this guy does in big games. He single handedly lost the S.C. game. As for Charles, he isnt big enough to block in the SEC as a t.e. Want miss him at all either, Jay Rome is bigger, and almost as fast. Good luck to the 3 most overrated players on the team. But if any of them think they are ready for the NFL, maybe we should call them the 3 stooges. Because that’s what they are. When you can’t beat a single team on your schedule that you weren’t favored to beat, and when you lay an egg against the 3 best teams you played, you arent leaders, and you certainly arent talented enought to play in the nfl. But, as a UGA fan, we can only hope that all 3 leave. Lemay and Mason are better than Murray right now, and Rome will be better than Charles in a year, and Moore will make all UGA fans forget about the most overrated safety in UGA history,

Mich.st has a top 10 defense, can’t wait to see big game Murray lay another egg. Will bet anyone he will have at least 3 turnovers, and Bobo will get his lunch handed to him again. Will be the same ole, same ole, with Richt, Bobo, and Murray. UGA will never win a big game with these 3 clowns running the UGA offense. You would think McGarity was smart enough to realize that the 10 wins were against inferior competition, but haven’t been impressed with him either. UGA always gets the second best, whether it be in head coaches, asst. coaches, 5 star players, and now A.D. Florida has Foley, and UGA gets 2nd best in McGarity. This guy has done nothing to impress anyone other than schedule a beatdown with Boise St, and now he is about to put the UGA program another 5 or 6 years from ever reaching it’s full potential. If Richt hasn’t won a N.C. after 11 years, he never will. So it it obvious that UGA’s A.D. doesn’t have the same goals as the Florida A.D. Typical mediocre goals from the A.D. to the head coach to the fans at UGA.

why wouldnt mason leave. he is to good to sit behind murrary and face it the only way bobo gives a guy a chance is if somebody is hurt or suspended. look at the guys who filled in for ogletree, and dallas lee would not have played without gates being hurt. we play five guys on the line and wear them out. you develop depth by giving guys who practice good a chance. thats why playing conservative when we get up by 14 hurts. you dint let young guys get to play.

Murray’s best game was one of his worst games. Against South Carolina he made plays to win the game and then he made plays to help South Carolina. The kid is too streaky too me. I grade him on the big games (LSU, Boise State, South Carolina, and you can throw in Florida because their defense is respectable). He aided in the loss to South Carolina and he padded his stats versus the weaker opponents. I’m not saying automatically demote Murray but why not open the quarterback competition since he was given the job his first year. Murray has shown that he is inconsistent and Hutson Mason might as well be given a chance to see what he can do too. The win loss column is the most important thing especially against quality opponents and he is not getting the job done if you ask me. You know why UGA fans love David Greene and D.J. Shockley? Because they were winners and got the job done in the big games. If Murray was winning the big games there would not be any questions about the young man whatsoever.

Aaron Murray, a redshirt sophomore, said he submitted his name to the NFL Draft NCAA College Advisory Committee because he was curious to see what they said. “It’s just cool. At the end of the day, it’s nice to see what they say…and maybe motivation to help you work hard in the offseason if that is your ultimate goal to get to the NFL.” The College Advisory Committee provides feedback in public for all to see and read on where they could be drafted.
Here is what they will tell him. Undrafted, no round. Not just because he has only been here now at Georgia starting now 17 December 2011, his 4th season on our campus – having started practicing with Mike Bobo and Mark Richt in preparation for the 2008 Bowl Game vs Michigan State. 2009, of course, he was redshirted – not because we had a great QB ahead of him, but despite the fact that vs Okie State in Game 1 of 2009, it was Painfully obvious to everyone that Zach Mettenberger just had to get on the field that day in which we Lost to a team who did not even finish up the 2009 season in the AP Poll Top 25. Joe Cox, you recall had the flu bad, and of course, he also had the chronic throwing shoulder which kept him out of practices every single week he was ever on our campus.

2010, this is where it became obvious to the NFL and to the NCAA College Advisory Board, that this guy was never going to be drafted in any NFL Draft, ever. He was billed as a dual-threat quarterback, instead vs SEC defensive linemen, we witnessed in horror that (1) he cannot run (2) he cannot hold on to the football when does try to run (3) he is too small to play vs SEC defensive linemen (4) he is way too slow at 4.7 in the 40-yard dash to outrun 300 lbs. SEC Defensive Linemen who are FASTER than he is.
Dual-threat out of the way, with his now since 2008 on our campus practicing for the Michigan State Bowl Game 2008 with the team, everyone turned to study Aaron Murray in all his Glory for all these years now in the Big Games against the teams the NFL and College Advisory Board see as teams who ended up these years in the Top 25 a Quarterback billed as the Best QB in The Best College Football League

wde, They won SEC championships sir. I am not blaming the teams woes on Murray. I am specifically talking about the quarterback play. There is enough blame to go around with the coaching. Are you seriously mentioning those 10 wins over teams who UGA should have beaten ? I guess you have not woke up since the humiliation in the SECCG. Murray completed 40 percent of his passed in that game and had key turnovers that lead to easy LSU points. That same performance in the South Carolina game with better passing statistics is why the fans are down on him. I am not the only one either check the other blogs and see what they have to say about Murray. I think it is the consensus that dawg nation is not sold on him. I am for an open quarterback competition and I think everyone else should be. Christian Lemay and Hutson Mason should be given a fair chance to show what they can do. Larry Munson left us in 2011.
Casey Anthony did not; OJ Simpson did not, Howard Stern did not.
Florida crocodiles’ football, 6-6, had its worst season since 1979. Yeah. It couldn’t happen to a superior group of collective fans, if I had to go out and select them from the entire worlds’.
Georgia picked up commitments from the top Offensive Lineman and the top Running Back in the nation.
South Carolina bested us in the end taking the $ 9.2 million each CapitalOne Bowl in popular tourist spot Orlando.
The SEC was chosen as the top football conference and the Top 2 were chosen to play each other. Pundits here repeatedly still state no do-overs for Alabama who beat current AP Poll # 24 Penn State, who beat current AP Poll # 7 Arkansas, and who were the better team on the field the 1st time the 2 played missing 4 field goals to lose in overtime by a field goal. But, that is not enough for the Pundits here – who really spend their days in these blogs doing NOTHING but posting Personal Attacks and Hate-Filled Harassing posts to anyone and everyone who dares to suggest that their choice – Oklahoma State lost to lowly 6-6 Iowa State. Oklahoma State DOES GET A DO-OVER IT SEEMS according to their logic. Alabama ? Never. Has to be a personal bias against Alabama, obviously, whom I personally will be rooting for – thanks to the nasty LSU fans on our AJ-C blogs.
We still don’t know who will be missing from the roster for 2012, and we still don’t know what our schedule will be other than we know we have to make room for Missouri on the road now –
806 astounding miles from Athens, GA.
I-85, I-75, I-24, I-55, I-270, I-70 to Columbia, as you can see, we are traveling North and West cutting through Chattanooga, Nashville, then Way North North of Memphis, through St. Louis, and then onward West and North to Columbia, Missouri.
That is BETTER than traveling to College Station Texas for Texas A&M which is an even more Astounding 933 miles West and South. If you take I-85, I-75, I-65 to I-10.
Other developments of note, despite the clique’s insistence that Aaron Murray can do no wrong and is the Best Quarterback Heisman Trophy and BCS National Championship Quarterback, he made zero All America lists. He was not All-SEC 1st team even on any single solitary list. I’d say personally, he stepped backwards from his initial season at the helm. Call it a Sophomore Slump for Aaron Murray.
We had a third of the team, just either up and quit the team, or were just asked to leave. According to the DISNEYdawgs.com, this is what is known this year as Addition By Attrition. Others wonder, with that many JUST GONE – GOOD RIDDANCE, how in the name of Heaven Above, can this coaching staff not assemble ever another such player ?
And, finally, for 2011 we have the Appeal by the NASTY, that ONLY THEIR POSTS BE ALLOWED. No one else allowed to post, or if they are, then certainly, they will be labeled NON-DAWGS and WORSE such as Georgia tek fans. It’s actually a complement to be called a NON-DAWG, compared to being named a Georgia tek fan (I presume they never read what they are bitter having on THEIR BLOG to see they could NOT POSSIBLY NAME ANY OF THESE BLOGGERS HERE GEORGIA tek fans.)

Any big time college team, is going to have nearly the same type of situation on the athletic teams with a few exceptions. I am going to assume that you are a tech. fan, and think that the Tech. name alone is going to get you a job, after playing 4 years, and still not having a degree much less an engineering degree.
Notice I said big time college team. That would automatically leave Ga. Tech. out of the discussion. By the way, GT has the third lowest graduation in the ACC, for football players. 55% is the rate. So much, for that big graduation rate you brag about. Of that 55%, how many of those players are engineering degree graduates?

Murray was inconsistent at the beginning of the season and made some mistakes along the way. But when the O Line is inconsistent at best (Note: Zero running game against LSU) and a man called Mike Bobo is calling the plays I don’t think Fran T. would have done any better.
When LSU finally woke up to the fact we could not run the ball then they absolutely slaughtered our O Line and smacked Murray the worst he’d been hit all season. I hope we don’t see a repeat of that against MSU (they know our weaknesses by now though).
Murray is the real deal and I hope will have a stong line in front of him and an intelligent OC calling plays on the sideline next season.

He is our best offensive player on team that averaged 35 points a game (note that he was offensive mvp at dawg night if you disagree with the best offensive player). He is a great leader and played pretty well in big games this year: Auburn, Florida, GT and i would say south caroline minus the one interception (fumble was not his fault cordy glenn completely whiffed and murray couuldn’t see him coming on his blind side). Boise st he did play awful but had little blocking or no running game. Vs lsu he played ok despite having our receivers drop 4 or 5 balls including 2 touchdowns. He stilll needs to limit his turnovers and improve his accuracy but he will continue to get better. Do yall realize how much better he has gotten in since last year? Chris the point is Murray was given the job and he has not lived up to his expectations if you will. 0-8 vs top ranked teams is a joke honestly. Why not see if Hutson Mason or Christian Lemay can do better. If I recall Murray won the qb competition by default with the departure of Zach Mettenberger who was giving Murray a great qb competition before his dismissal. With Joe Cox gone thankfully Murray was handed the job. He did pretty well for a freshman redshirt but this year was more of the same, even Mark Richt said in spring practice that in the g-day game Murray did ok for a Sophomore . Now Zach Mettenberger will be a starter for the best team in the land (not saying he should still be here but he could have been the starter if not for that incident) and Hutson Mason may leave without ever getting to show what he is capable of. Murray is similar to Crowell in that they were both basically handed their jobs and since it is a consensus that dawg nation wants more rb’s to compete with Crowell why not do the same with Murray?

Murray isn’t going any where , he hasn’t proven he can play under pressure.
Jordan Jefferson had a horrible game against Georgia. He didn’t contribute any with his running and only got 30 yard’s through the air. LSU’s strategy was to NOT beat yourself. Jefferson’s stat’s were about as bad as it get’s but he didn’t turn the ball over like Murray did and that was the difference. Murray’s three turn over’s and Georgia’s not having anybody in charge of the special team’s that know what they are doing is why Georgia lost the game. If we had used Miles strategy in the game and if we had a Quarterback that was smart enough to just take what LSU gave us Georgia would have been in the game until the end.
The reason Jefferson didn’t start doing dumb stuff is because Miles used two Quarterback’s and Jefferson knew if he started turning the ball over he would be replaced by Lee.
That’s where Georgia should learn something from a very successful coach in playing two Quarterback’s. Even though Murray’s potential is off the chart’s as far as a leader go’s he would be a lot better and Georgia would get a lot better result’s if the Quarterback job wasn’t just handed to him. GEORGIA NEED’S TO START PLAYING TWO QUARTERBACK’S EVERY YEAR. WE WILL BE A LOT MORE SUCCESSFUL.

Georgia lost 3 games this year. In all 3, Murray looked pretty bad. He also didn’t look real good in several of the wins we had. Richt’s got to give H Mason some snaps in the bowl game, period. I’m actually a big supporter of Richt and Bobo, but in this matter, I’m losing some of my patience.

Spot on Jack!
USCe was a terrible game for AM with the pick 6 and the fumble scoop and score. No argument there. But in the other 2 games, it was almost like AM deployed even more complex Jedi mind tricks to make the team lose.
Against Boise, he tells the D to let Boise score 5 touchdowns. Why does the QB tell the D to allow 5 TD’s? It doesn’t make sense. The O put up 21 on a top 10 team. Enough to beat a lot of teams. But not when the QB tells Coach Grantham to let Boise score at will.
In the SECCG Aaron Murray told King & Mitchell to drop those perfect TD passes against LSU. What was he thinking? If he was a good QB, he would tell the receivers to CATCH the ball, not drop it. Duh!

To the fools who keep trying to insult Aaron, do you not realize he shattered the all-time UGA record for touchdown passes in a season? Do you not realize he is one of the best running QBs we have had too (e.g. see the video that plays for every home game of him against UT)? Yes, his TEAMS have not won against our best opponents, but do you really think that is all HIS fault? Did you not see the dropped passes in the LSU game? Yes, he made mistakes in the South Carolina game, but did he allow the fake punt touchdown by a lineman? Was he responsible for the defensive lapses in the BSU game? Did he help AJ sell his jersey and cause him to be suspended for the first four games last year? Yes, he threw the game ending interception against FLA last year, but he also lead the comeback that tied the game up. Was he not the winning QB in the 10 straight games that we won this year, including big games over Fla., Auburn and Tech? That’s some serious hate or envy against this guy. Whoever you are, you are going to look like an even bigger fool when he leads UGA to victory next year over and over.

I love how some people change their definitions to suit their argument. For example, defining games won against all but the top three rated SEC teams as games won against inferior competition (when those same people would brag all day that the SEC is the best conference in the nation). Or arguing that wins count in evaluating QBs, except when those wins were the exact 10 games that UGA won with the QB they don’t like. Some clown even made the argument that “only national championship contenders” win the Heismann Trophy, when in this very year it was won by someone who didn’t have a chance in a million at winning the national championship. Or arguing that Murray must be a mediocre (or worse) QB, when these are the same people who say our Coach is terrible (and should be let go) and our offensive coordinator is one of the worst in college football (and that they could do a better job). Those same people have no idea that we averaged over 30 points a game and that this so-called unsatisfactory QB SHATTERED the all-time UGA touchdown mark, previously held by the NUMBER ONE draft pick in the NFL. You people are the definition of INSANE.

And let me not forget, the argument made by the same people who said we had no shot against LSU without a running game (myself included), conveniently forgetting that we had as weak a running game as I have ever seen by a UGA team, and then somehow blaming Aaron Murray for not winning the game against what many experts will say is one of the greatest teams of all time if they beat Bama for a second time in the NC game. Those people are INSANE too!

7576DAWG,
The reason that Jordan Jefferson didn’t start doing “dumb stuff” (as you put it), is because he had four (count them, FOUR) SEC starting-quality tailbacks, an unbelievable talent on special teams and one of the greatest defenses in recent memory to take ALL of the pressure off. How many QBs would have gotten to continue playing without making a single first down in a half, if not for the fact that the QB didn’t have to do a blessed-thing in that game? Murray had ALL of the weight on his shoulders and he did everything he could possibly have done. Yes he made mistakes in the second half, but don’t you dare imply that it was because he wasn’t smart enough! See my previous posts to get an idea of what category your argument fits under.

Biggest mistakes All at the WORST POSSIBLE MOMENT IN BIGGEST KEY GAMES
Aaron Murray is NOT MR. CLUTCH.
He is anything but Mr. Clutch, an absolute NO-SHOW in the big-games.
Consistently inconsistent.
Slow.
Small.
Throws passes behind receivers, over their heads, poor timing, horrid footwork, has passes batted down at the line, stares down receivers, does a poor job of going through his progressions, he calls his own name more than half the time, is a Ball Hog, and Holds the ball too long.
Prefers make OL look bad taking sacks than throw ball away.
Doesn’t want to ruin his passing percentage, which of course, if you add in his 52 sacks as an incomplete pass. Aaron Murray should have thrown the football away when he holds it too long and is sacked. A proper QB would have thrown it away instead of trying to make his stats look good in pass completion percentage, which you just know he knows that he is NOT ACCURATE. Instead of holding the ball too long, his pass completion ratio for his career is only
427 completions out of 765 attempts only 55 percent completions career.
YANKED in his last game.

[...] Mark Richt, on the bowl game: … It’s also the first game of 2012, and the way everything is set up in the BCS system, I think how you finish has something to do with how people see you when the season begins the next year. I think it’s important for the future too to play well and try to get the victory. [...]

You know, I’ve skipped over everyone’s comments about this article, just because I want to make my own comment and not respond to anyone who simply poked at UGA or these players. UGA really needs all these guys to return. A championship season isn’t going to happen for UGA until some special players who are leaders decide to stay and get that experience of that last year in college. There are lots of reasons to go and lots of reasons to stay, but just once, UGA needs some guys to stay just because they want to – that’s when a magical season can really happen for them. Mark Richt is really not the problem. It just takes a lot of things to fall into place to win a MNC. UGA has been close, and they are likely to win one in the near future if the star recruits just decide to stay every once in a while, rather than use UGA as a “stepping stone to the NFL.” I hope the players recognize the fact that staying can be a really good thing. One year is such a short period in a lifetime. Come back and help UGA battle Alabama and LSU for a title next year.

As much as some of the statements have trashed the Columbus players. No wone needs to trash Jarvis Jones…He is a winner as is Bruce Figgins.

UGA players, especially on defense, have had a knack for leaving too early and being duds. See Rennie Curran. Hope both will stay. Both could be first round with another year

Not a single first down in the entire half of a championship game, and didn’t get pulled? Les Miles was just playing favorites.

I don’t know what Samuel is if he’s not a fullback, He runs straight ahead like a fullback, He has no cutting ability such as a tailback has nor does does he possess break away speed which is expected in a tailback, His blocking is average, So if Coach Right says he’s not a fullback then I say he is certainly not a tailback.
Orson Charles? I'll tell you all how I would ........

Orson should have been utilized as a running back. He has it all. His one advantage would be to catch it on the flats. No, we used the kid as a somtimes used decoy for AJ Green or a rarely used tight end. Dumb this was.
Next year, we have that redshirt Frosh kid from Valdosta, Jay Rome that IS a legit tight end. We will not miss TE Charles, sadly. He was simply not given the reps to run up some catches. Should have been a r. back.
Charles could have been an awesome back for UGA. We missed the boat with this kid. He can play running back and did so in HS. Oh well ………………..
