ATHENS — I’ll be writing more about this later but I figured I’d go ahead and share the information with you.
Twenty-seven UGA athletes will be graduating with degrees on Friday. Among those will be 10 football players.
To me, their stories are always the best to tell. Some of them are finishing up at the end of their playing careers, like Justin Anderson, Bruce Figgins and Trinton Sturdivant; some have more time to play, like Richard Samuel; and others have been coming back to complete degrees after playing pro ball.
No matter which, they’re all happy endings and I think we all enjoy those.
Like I said, I’ll profile one or two in the next day or so. In the meantime, here are the names of UGA student-athletes getting their sheepskins this week. Congrats to all.
Football players
Baseball: Justin Earls, Lawrenceville, Ga., Sport Management; Carson Schilling, Macon, Ga., Communication Studies,
Women’s Basketball: Meredith Mitchell, Midfield, Ala., Management.
Equestrian: Amelia Rodgers, Burlington, Vt., Animal Science; Kate Stewart, Dawson, Ga.
Gymnastics: Hilary Mauro, Boston Mass., Communication Studies.
Soccer: Kelli Corless, Acworth, Ga., Exercise and Sport Science; Caroline Simpson, Atlanta, Ga., Finance.
Softball: Taylor Schlopy, West Hills, Calif., Child and Family Development; Megan Wiggins, Snellville, Ga., Sociology.
Swimming and Diving: Lexie Bryant, Duluth, Ga., Art; Lauren Cartwright, Fayetteville, Ga., Exercise and Sport Science; Chelsea Nauta, Tampa, Fla., Biology.
Track and Field: Alesha Asijie, Mesa, Ariz., Child and Family Development; Odeika Bent, Montego Bay, Jamaica, Sociology and Criminal Justice; LaTroya Darrell, Smith’s Parish, Bermuda, Child and Family Development.
Volleyball: Carla Tietz, St. Charles, Ill., Child and Family Development.

“Mark it down you heard it here first! Wisconsin is going to be national champs this year!”
_________________________________________________
No idea what that is all about Dawg48. It has nothing to do with any topic on UGA Football, but Russell Wilson Wisconsin’s QB did graduate. Of course, he played 4 years including his redshirt at NC State first. Wisconsin with him lost to teams such as 6-6 Ohio State – who lost to teams such as 6-6 Miami and 6-6 Purdue. Wisconsin is # 63 Passing Offense even with importing Russell Wilson. They are # 47 in Rushing Defense and face off against Oregon, so I therefore figure they LOSE this bowl game too. # 69 in Net Punting, # 67 in Kick-Off returns, Wisconsin is no better than the TEAM I WANTED TO WIN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP THIS YEAR, which by the way, IS NOT WISCONSIN. Wisconsin is also # 71 in sacks of opposing quarterbacks and # 54 in Sacks allowed on Russell Wilson.
Wisconsin ended up the regular season # 10 in the BCS, not # 1 by the way, Dawg48, and with its impending LOSS to Oregon who is FAVORED TO BLOW-OUT Wisconsin right after our game 3 Mondays from now, they were NEVER A CONTENDER.
What is this love affair you have with WISCONSIN

1 of 25 lettermen in men’s tennis during his tennis playing days while I also attended the University of Georgia, Dan Magill won no national championships in men’s tennis while Greg McGarity was there. And, don’t get confused now because Greg McGarity was NO Manuel (Manny) Diaz. Greg McGarity in men’s tennis is also no Matias Boeker, no Mikael Pernfors, no John Isner. By the way, tennis consists of 3 teams of doubles and 6 singles, a total of 12 players. There is no doubt with 8 National Championships in Men’s Tennis that we are great at Men’s Tennis 2nd to only Stanford, but Greg McGarity had NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.
The now Dan McGill Tennis Complex was built while Greg McGarity and I attended UGA, and after he graduated and while I was still there, we hosted the NCAA Men’s National Championship. For 13 years consecutively and 24 times overall, we have hosted the NCAA Men’s National Championship in Tennis.

Now that is funny. Not because it really matters but because someone still obviously believes the key to success in life is wrapped in your receipt … eerrr … diploma on the wall. It’s probably the part about the tech argument that cracks me up the most. The MOST successful people in this country didn’t get where they are based on their DEGREE. They may have one (and many do not), but they are quick to tell you that isn’t what got them there. So keep looking at your degree hanging on your wall in your office that you probably spend more time in than those who actually choose to live a life.

Now, the challenge become “what to do with it” .. do they go get a job (assuming playing on Sunday’s is not in the cards for them) where they work in an office for 10 hours a day or do they get that job and maybe do some other things as well to be a blessing to others? Just admit that you are being speculative at best. If your college education was all that, you would understand that. And by the way, some of GTs programs (public policy, health systems, paper science and engineering???, music technology) aren’t all that either.

Are you going to answer my question to you earlier? HOW MANY FOOTBALL PLAYERS ARE PURSUING AN ENGINEERING DEGREE? 1 maybe, or would it be 2? How many of your football team, are special admissions? You will not answer, because then all of your petty crap you post on here, would be as invalid as you are. If the attitude you display is typical of the average tech. fan, I can understand why folks don’t flock to play football at Tech.

As for special admissions do you really want to go there when UGA is one of the worst in the country in that regard at a whopping 73.5%? How many UGA football players have been named one of the 20 smartest athletes in sports? How many of your football players left early because of a job offer from Microsoft? When was the last time your football players led the nation in SAT scores?

GT Bob,
Yep, sat scores make you a better football player no doubt. Do you honestly think that the most sought after high school athletes, consider academics when they accept a schools offer, tech. or otherwise? As for how many football players have been named the twenty smartest kids in football. They are smart enough that they will make millions and guess what, they will not have engineering degrees from Tech. You need to get into the real world. Like I said, I knew you couldn’t or wouldn’t answer the engineering degree question. The reason is, you know, very few, if any of them will get a degree, in engineering. I’ll see if I can’t come up with the answer for you. As for special admission, look at the above. Football players, that are of the caliber to go to the next level, aren’t for the most part going to be scholars. If there were some type of minor leagues for the NFL, the majority of them would bypass the colleges and universities all together, tech. players included. I think also, you would be hard pressed to find a NFL coach, owner or scout that is worried about a persons SAT scores. All you need do, is take a look at the test they have to take, to measure their intelligence.
Using the education requirements excuse just doesn’t ride. If your football players were so intelligent, wouldn’t you think, that they could find a way to beat UGA more than once every ten or so years? I believe there is also a article circulated around the papers that said, GT. had one of the poorer graduation rates for football players, in the ACC. Of course, your excuse would be, “It is harder to get a degree”, at tech, which further proves my point about your football players. They are no smarter than any other teams football players and the sooner you acknowledge that, instead of saying your institute has such high standards, you will be a more believable person. It simply does not apply to your players, anymore than it does ours. Only 85 scholarships are given out maximum for any team, so I think, that’s a pretty small percentage of the student body. It is even a lower percentage when you compare the size of student bodies of each school. Man up and admit, that you are just jealous. It only hurts for a while and might even help your mental state.

Look up Stanford’s graduation rates for football players.
Now there is a academic school which also excels on the field.
Tech does neither.
Tech wants to be a football factory. They offer a ” Management ” major so they can get football players.
And they recruit the same people who end up at Georgia and Alabama.

Which school is likely to be more demanding academically – one where 99% of the general students graduate (e.g. ND, UNC) or one where less than 90% graduate (e.g. UGA, GT)?

Congraduations to graduating dawgs. @ Tech.,two things I find disturbing; the number of foreign students acquiring engineering degrees, then returning home and companies ( example.. GE) moving operations overseas due to the shortages of engineering job candidates here.

But….but….Paul Johnson can beat you at chess, with a checker…. He’s not coaching, he’s playing a video game….. He’s the smartest coach in the world…. Less technical majors are a joke….You can’t be a success in life without a “real” degree…
Paul Johnson has a P.E. degree from Western Frickin Carolina….. which is it?…

Congrats!!! Getting a degree is respectable no matter what major/school you chose. I never understood why the debates always resort to that argument. Respect given where respect is due
BTW, yes most GTFB players major in Management but it’s not even close to being an easy major. It just happens to be fairly easy compared to the other majors Tech offers (engineering, computer science, architecture, etc). A lot of non-management majors will take a MGMT class thinking it’s an easy A and then later find out it’s not as easy as it seems. That being said, yall can cut that “GT athletes major in management and still don’t graduate” talk out especially if you’ve never taken a class at GT or UGA!

Congrats to all the student athletes who graduated, no matter which school you got your degree from!! You all should be very proud of yourselves. To all the UGA fans who say that UGA is better than GT, look at it this way, UGAs housing degree gives you a tool belt and hammer. GT’s building and construction degree gives you a suit and tie to go boss around mutts who were gives a hammer as a graduation present.
Here’s a joke for all you hungry mutts out there….. What do you call a Tech grad reigning over thousands of UGA employees? The CEO of Walmart.
Happy Holidays!
