2012 depth chart has Georgia looking again like an SEC contender

Georgia currently is slated to return 17 of 22 starters from this year’s 10-3 squad when it defends its SEC Eastern Division championship next season. That’s obviously a big reason for optimism.

That nine of those starters will be back from one of the nation’s stingiest defenses is cause for excitement. That the three losses on offense are all on the line is cause for concern. The Bulldogs also will be completely revamping their special teams, with the graduations of punter and holder Drew Butler and place-kicker Blair Walsh. That will be no small undertaking.

Of course, it’s all relative. One must also consider that South Carolina, which beat the Bulldogs 45-42 in Athens and ultimately knocked them out of the Capital One Bowl, also returns a lot of starters. The Gamecocks will have 16 starters back if wide receiver Alshon Jeffery and defensive end Devin Taylor choose to return. They are also replacing their specialists.

So with all that in mind, following is a quick look at the team Georgia will return in 2012. Let me know what you think of the Bulldogs’ chances of repeating as East champions and returning to the Georgia Dome in 355 days.

OFFENSE

Georgia appears poised to reload on offense in 2012, but its success will be dependent upon the development of a very young offensive line. The Bulldogs are extremely blessed at the skill positions, with the leading producers back at every spot barring early departure for the NFL.

Quarterback

  • Jr. Aaron Murray
  • Jr. Hutson Mason OR
  • RFr. Christian LeMay

Comment: Murray will be one of the top quarterbacks in the country as a junior. The backup situation is going to be interesting. Mason has openly discussed the possibility of transferring. LeMay, who was redshirted last season, was considered the No. 2 quarterback prospect in the country when he committed in high school.

Fullback

  • Jr. Zander Ogletree
  • Fr. Quayvon Hicks

Comment: Ogletree (5-10, 224) is undersized but proved capable in a backup role as a freshman. Hicks marks a return to the traditional pro-style fullback role that has characterized UGA backfields under coach Mark Richt. Georgia got away from running the football at this position this past season.

Tailback

  • So. Isaiah Crowell
  • Sr. Richard Samuel
  • Sr. Carlton Thomas
  • So. Ken Malcome
  • Fr. Keith Marshall

Comment: Let the competition begin. Production plummeted the last quarter of the season due to injuries for Crowell and Samuel and disciplinary setbacks. Richt pronounced the competition for playing time open for bowl practices and it will surely continue in the spring, when the ballyhooed Marshall joins the fray.

Split end

  • So. Malcolm Mitchell
  • Sr. Marlon Brown
  • So. Michael Bennett
  • RFr. Sanford Seay

Comment: There is unlikely to be a position as a stockpiled with talent as is this one. Mitchell, an All-SEC freshman, will be one of the league’s most explosive playmakers. Meanwhile, Bennett and Brown are big targets with a penchant for making tough catches.

Flanker

  • Sr. Tavarres King
  • So. Chris Conley
  • Jr. Rantavious Wooten
  • RFr. Justin Scott-Wesley

Comment: King was Georgia’s second-leading receiver with 40 catches and leading scorer among wideouts and probably is underappreciated as a consistent threat. Conley came through with a midseason redshirt removal. Scott-Wesley was so impressive as a redshirt the Bulldogs came close to doing the same with him.

Tight end

  • Sr. Orson Charles
  • Jr. Arthur Lynch
  • RFr. Jay Rome
  • Fr. Ty Smith

Comment: The health and welfare of this position will be impacted by Charles’ decision to turn pro early or not. Charles earned All-America honors and was the Bulldogs’ leading receiver and be the best in the country as a senior. But even if he leaves the position appears to be in good hands. Lynch is one of the team’s strongest players and Rome is a fleet-footed receiver along the lines of Charles and Aron White who the Bulldogs bit the bullet on as a redshirt.

Center

  • So. David Andrews
  • So. Hunter Long

Comment: Line coach Will Friend repeatedly referred to Andrews as the most seasoned and capable of Georgia’s freshman group. He better be, as he’s replacing the team’s most valuable player of 2011 and Rimington Award finalist in Ben Jones. Chris Burnette is capable of sliding over from guard to play here and that might be the best bet.

Left guard

  • Jr. Dallas Lee
  • Jr. Kenarious Gates

Comment: Lee played surprisingly well after overcoming an asthma-like condition that sidelined him for almost a year. He had taken over the starter here before a broken leg versus Florida sat him out for the remainder of the regular season. Gates started seven games here but will likely be needed at tackle.

Right guard

  • Jr. Chris Burnette
  • So. Kolton Houston

Comment: Burnette started 11 games in 2011 and was sidelined by injury for the other two. But expect this to be an intense competition as Houston was competing to be a starter before he ran afoul of NCAA policy and had to sit out the entire season. Houston can also play tackle. Burnette can also play center.

Left tackle

  • Jr. Kenarious Gates
  • Jr. Austin Long
  • RFr. Xzavier Ward
  • Fr. John Theus

Comment: The biggest question mark on offense heading into 2012 is at this critical position. Cordy Glenn proved to be a warrior in handling these duties in 2011 but the Bulldogs gave up 29 sacks nonetheless. Gates has played here occasionally and practiced often. Long has been injury prone and there’s nothing but youth behind him. Ward is extremely athletic but coming off ACL surgery. Theus is a five-star signee who will enroll early.

Right tackle

  • So. Watts Dantzler
  • RFr. Zach DeBell

Comment: The gargantuan Dantzler was a pleasant surprise as a true freshman and earned awards for his dedication in the weight room. DeBell is super athletic and has added size and strength during his redshirt year. Georgia needs to recruit some depth.

DEFENSE

Georgia should field one of the best defenses in the country again in 2012. Nine starters return from a unit that was third in the SEC and top 10 nationally, including All-American linebacker Jarvis Jones. The Bulldogs lose defensive end DeAngelo Tyson and all-everything cornerback Brandon Boykin. Otherwise the defense is back intact.

Left defensive end

  • Sr. Abry Jones
  • So. Mike Thornton

Comment: Jones was probably under-appreciated in 2011, leading the down linemen with 45 tackles and collecting four sacks and seven tackles for loss. Thornton came on toward the end of the season and brings quickness to the position.

Noseguard

  • Sr. John Jenkins
  • Jr. Kwame Geathers

Comment: When healthy, there is no better duo at a defensive line position in the SEC. Jenkins improved dramatically from the beginning of the season to the end and he should prove a, even more dominant force in 2012. The future looks bright as the Bulldogs bring in freshmen Jonathan Taylor and John Atkins.

Right defensive end

  • Jr. Garrison Smith
  • Jr. Derrick Lott

Comment: Smith came on like gangbusters in 2011 and proved a more-than-capable fill-in when DeAngelo Tyson went down with an ankle injury for most of the final three games of the season. Lott is an impressive physical specimen who appears poised for a breakout season. Georgia has several other defensive linemen committed.

Will outside linebacker

  • Jr. Jarvis Jones
  • So. Ray Drew
  • Jr. Chase Vasser

Comment: All-SEC, All-American, SEC sack leader in first season — enough said about Jones, the dynamic transfer from Southern Cal. By the end of the season, defensive coordinator was playing Jones all over the place. Drew is a star in the making and will command playing time. T.J. Stripling, Brandon Burrows and Dexter Morant may or may not figure in here or the other outside ‘backer spot.

Sam outside linebacker

  • Sr. Cornelius Washington
  • Jr. Reuben Faloughi
  • So. Ramik Wilson
  • RFr. Sterling Bailey

Comment: Washington is a force who was starting to come into his own in 2011. Grantham mentioned Bailey among the players who impressed him most during a redshirt year. Wilson can play inside and outside. Signee Kent Turene could figure into the linebacker mix.

Mike linebacker

  • Sr. Mike Gilliard
  • Sr. Christian Robinson

Comment: Gilliard took advantage of an early-season ankle injury to Robinson and emerged as the Bulldogs’ second-leading tackler and an 11-game starter. Robinson found a role as a third-down specialist and rotated regularly. Together they combined for 102 tackles.

Mo linebacker

  • Jr. Alec Ogletree
  • So. Amarlo Herrera

Comment: Ogletree missed six games and almost all the opener when he broke a foot on the second defensive series of the season. He showed how much the Bulldogs missed him with 25 tackles an multiple behind-the-line plays in the final four games. He could be Georgia’s next All-American. Herrera started seven games as a true freshman and can play any  of the second-level positions.

Boundary cornerback

  • Sr. Sanders Commings
  • Jr. Jordan Love
  • So. Chris Sanders

Comment: The versatile Commings, who also three games at safety, was an unsung hero among the defensive backs. Rarely out of position, the only improvement he needs to make is holding onto the football when takeaways come his way. Love and Sanders will battle for playing time.

Field cornerback

  • Sr. Branden Smith
  • So. Damian Swann
  • RFr. Devin Bowman

Comment: Smith brings a wealth of experience to the field, having started seven games as the Bulldogs’ nickelback and contributing both on offense and in the return game. Swann could have started in a lot of other secondaries and figures to fill Smith’s previous role as a versatile multi-tasker.

Free safety

  • Sr. Bacarri Rambo
  • So. Nick Marshall
  • So. Connor Norman

Comment: Rambo is a legitimate star, having already earned All-America honors as a junior and leading the SEC interceptions in 2011. He should be a candidate for Thorpe Award. If he can master Georgia’s defensive schemes, Marshall has the potential to be even better. Marshall can also play corner.

Strong safety

  • Sr. Shawn Williams
  • So. Corey Moore
  • So. Marc Deas

Comment: Williams proved to be an enforcer along the lines of Thomas Davis and Greg Blue. He’s one of the team’s hardest hitters and best tacklers but needs to improve in pass coverage. Moore was a special teams regular as a freshman.

SPECIALISTS

Punter

  • Fr. Collin Barber
  • So. Adam Erickson

Comment: The Bulldogs are putting a lot of stock into Barber to come in from Cartersville High and be able carry the torch left by Drew Butler, an All-American and Ray Guy Award recipient. Walkons such as Erickson will be the only other options.

Place-kicker

  • Fr. Marshall Morgan
  • Sr. Jamie Lindley

Comment: Senior-season struggles aside, Georgia most certainly will miss record-setting kicker Blair Walsh. The Bulldogs went back to South Florida to replace Walsh, grabbing another Chris Sailers’ protégé in Morgan from Miami. Georgia chose Morgan over a pair of in-state standouts in Austin Hardin of Marist (committed to Florida),and Calhoun star Adam Griffith (Alabama). So there will be much pressure on Morgan to perform.

Snapper

  • Sr. Ty Frix
  • RFr. Nathan Theus

Comment: The snapping duties appear to be in good hands with Theus, a graduate of the Ray Guy Kicking Academy, set to succeed Frix.

I would not have put recruits who have not signed an LOI on this depth chart but seeing as it’s a projection anyway, it’s not a big deal. Right tackle looks a little weak though. I have a feeling 3-4 guys will have to change positions along the O-line. Where the heck is T.J. Stripling? Combine this depth chart with the schedule, and you have another 10-2 team and no worse than 9-3. I think UGA’s schedule will be soft in some places, but harder as far as the conference. Why? Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Florida will be better. South Carolina, IF Connor Shaw is worth 2 cents, will be just a notch below next year without Alshon Jeffery. And Missouri has a spread offense we have never seen, plus, they will be better after breaking in a new QB. And please, will someone start Chris Conley over Tavarres King.

Wilson and Turene should get more looks at the Mike and Mo positions. Pre season rankings mean nothing. UGA must get stronger in the offseason and faster both offensively and defensively.

I am a UGA fan, but the East was weak, and UGA struggled. Not that the team has experience, only time will tell.

UGA has talent, but can the coaching staff develop that talent in the classroom, as students, as atheletes and as good citizens.

No doubt all of the ingredients are there, but time will tell, and a year is a long but yet short time away.

The running backs are the bigest question. UGA is in the sweepstakes for “RB’s” They will push each other for playing time. The depth at “RB” is critical for the success of the offence. The “O” line will have more depth than you think. “ST” will be just fine. The “D” will not take a step backward. The “D” will be the backbone of this team. I feel that a return trip to the Ga. 2 weaknesses of Trip-Option …..1) Once an athletic defense with a good co-ordinator has seen it a few times, they adapt to it… and from thereout the T-O has diminishing returns. 2) Not useful as a catch-up offense when down by 14 and it’s getting late. This looks like a top five team to me. The D is still young and improving. Another year in the weight room makes best in the country possible. Shoot, they are number three right now for this year, and they have improved a lot since the start of the year! The O line is definitely the big question mark. I sure hope they can get Avery Young from PBG for tackle depth, and maybe a JUCO star, too. How good any of the youngsters are is a real mystery to all but the coaches. One thing is sure: the line will continue to be very big. IMHO, having the big dominant O line has been the missing piece for the last few years. I think we could well have won a NC in 07, 08, or this year if we had a great O line. It would have made our offense top 20 this year, I believe. We had some talent, but we were well below average in TFLs and Sacks given up. So we gave up a very high amount of sacks and TFLs while our total O was rated much higher. That tells me our position players did very well, despite being under intense pressure. Murray saved a whole bunch of sacks with his wheels. They don’t show hurries on the site I use, but I suspect we were well below avg there, too. Anyway, I see the line as the key to a possible NC next year, but they will have to be a miracle almost, considering their youth, and the glaring holes we have to fill. Glenn and Jones will likely both go near the top of the NFL draft.

@TampaGator with the talent your team has I think what will be the biggest question is what offense the new OC will run. QB – Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Driskell were two of the top 5 recruits at that position in the country, and both are extremely talented…and gifted. They just need experience…and Brissett got a lot this year. He will be a lot better…and maybe very good next year. Driskell might be too. Muschamp is so pleased with both that he is not even recruiting a QB for this class. What does that tell you?

FB…Hunter Joyer was the top FB recruit in the country last year…and he had a terrific year as a freshmen starter. He is very, very good.

TE….Jordan Reed is a future star at TE….was hurt against you guys and FSU. A.C. Leonard had a terrific year as a freshman. Colin Thompson and Matt Taylor, both rated in the top 5 TE recruits this year…and both are expected to enroll in January.

RB…Matt Jones is a horse and is just what the doctor ordered for the pro style offense at Florida. Trey Burton is moving over to RB. Gillesie is back. And maybe Mack Brown will finally get it this summer.

The big questions for the Gators is (1) the maturity of the young OL, the development of the RSfresh OL (two), and the quick development of Dunker, Humphries, and probably Avery Young; and (2) the continued development of Andre Debose and Quinton Dunbar at WR…and the need for a couple of recruits to come in and have an impact to push the current WRs to get better.

3.)UGA’s O team will have a bunch of running backs for the first time in several years
4.) UGA’s O will be a quick 6 or grind it out squad, depending on the opponent. I do see UGA knocking out many teams next year like AU and GT and FLorida and SC.

Offensive line is, without a doubt, the most vulnerable part of the 2012 team. John Theus (LT) and Avery Young (RT) are ranked the #3 & #4 OT’s in the class of 2011 and should bring quality depth (Young has not committed yet). RB should be good with Samuels, Crowell & Marshall splitting the carries. It would be good if the QB job was open to competition but don’t expect Murray to not start. Hutson Mason and LeMay are both talented enough to start. A special teams coach is a must. With decent special teams play UGA could now be 12-1 instead of 10-3.

BMOC … my source was from The Tailgate Show early in the year. It was Loren, I think, talking with either Mitchell or Smith. He said that rumor was those two are the fastest and asked the kid what he thought about it, and the response was sorta “well, they have never really lined us up together in a race, ya know”.
Murray missed hitting the bomb in stride many times, with several receivers. Don’t know if it’s his arm or his judgement. Most noticeable with TK because they called his # so often.

Muschamp coaching in Florida is far better in my view than coaching in Athens at UGA. His temperment, shouting and screaming and ranting was well publicized and in fact, watching U of Texas, I haad seen it before.

The ghetto kids that Florida has to recruit will not respond to that. Next year, U of Florida will be just a newer version of this year’s lousy Florida squad. Yes, they have talent but he is not able to coach them up and his fat man leaving pretty much confirms what I am saying.

Within three more years …………………Florida will be embraking on a new H Coach search. Next !!!

Go Dogs. Aftet next year’s win, UGA will have won like 4 or 5 of the last 8 or 9 or 10 games and the tide will turn more and more into what it has always been ………………UGA OWNS Florida and always will.

Florida (who will play qb or rb or anything on offense)
USC (Good offense losing most of there defense)
Tennessee ( They didn’t win a conference game! I know they’re young but i see them getting 4th or 5th again)
Georgia (the only team in the east without major flaws)
Vandy (Great for vandy but still vandy and not betterthan uga)

Will Christian Lemay be happy to sit the bench again for a year? I doubt it, we’ll probably lose him too.

So we need to sign another QB to get some depth there.

I am one of the many who are not yet convinced Aaron Murray is the right guy at QB. I know he gets good inidivudla stats, like td’s/yards, but he doesn’t get wins against teams that finish ranked in the top 25, 0-7 there, really has me worried.

The most important thing that need’s to happen too improve the Dawg’s for 2012 is to give CMR an extension but the most important extension is Grantham. After you lock those two up then Georgia has got to change something with the coaches. Our special team’s was one of the worst in the nation and lost the South Carolina game and allowed a few other games to be close when we should have blown out the opponent. We were out coached in way too many games.
To stay with the status quo would admit Georgia didn’t have any coaching problem’s in 2011. My question is if CMR doesn’t think we had a major break down in some of our coaching responsibilities then why weren’t those problem’s addressed during the season.
The other major thing that need’s to be addressed is to open up the Quarterback position . If nothing else maybe it will make Murray thing before he throw’s into traffic. Murray’s mistakes single handed allowed some team’s to make the score closer than is should have been and lost the South Carolina game and opened up the flood gates in the LSU game. Murray has got to learn patience or other Quarterback’s need to be played. CMR and Bobo have got to weigh Murray’s record against ranked team’s and they would find that it’s one of the worst in the nation. They need to be open to competition at Quarterback and not just hand the job to Murray. It will make Murray a better player.

The other interesting thing I saw about the schedule changes were some reports that the SEC was asking Vandy-USC to move their game to the opening weekend. I am not sure what that impact may have, with USC already having a conference game under its belt before UGA in Columbia. It seems a bit of a shame that these conference realignments are messing up what was a pretty good thing.

LHarding Dawg read his comments there quite amusing. Ok dont count the 6-7 season with murray cuz we sucked last year. This year played pretty bad vs boise but had no protection
South carolina played pretty good we scored 42 points but special teams cost us the game (the fumble at the end can’t be his fault cuz he couldn’t see him coming)

Yeah, Chris, Clemson is the most enigmatic team in college football. At times they looked like a top 5 in the country type team with skilled playmakers and then other times they looked lost. The only question will be special teams-LSU exposed us there, and will we be tough enough up front on offense to open some holes for our runners against the top teams? We had better skills people on offense than LSU had, but their O–line eventually got the run game going, their special teams swung the momentum in their favor. Can’t over emphasize that enough.

The problem with you son is you dont fork out $2500 a year to watch a program that cant beat a good FL team nor win a big game in years, and cannot win the SEC east outright without having to have another team lose out

When UGA stops demanding so much from its fanbase with mediocre results I will be glad to shut up

Heck I’ll shut up if I would not have to pay the donation but just pay face value for season tickets

Thats the problem

Yeah CMR was quick to kick Mettenberger off…because he should have. The problem is that, like Cam Newton at Fla, what good does it do to try and discipline these kids when all they have to do is go play JC ball and get ‘recruited’ to another SEC school – and get paid to boot. The Conference should have an agreement that kids kicked out for cause have to sit out, at least, two seasons before they can sign with another member instittuion…no enrolling and red-shirting, that way if they want to play they have to go to some other conference.

As for the ‘Daddy’ of fhe girl pulling his support, the coed was a Valdosta State student, so I suspect that he was spending more money down there than in Athens, plus if it had been my daughter that he assaulted, and he did assault her so don’t call it grab-ass, what I would have ‘cut off’ wouldn’t have been money, young Mr. Mettenberger would be a eunuch.

December 13th, 2011
6:42 pm

Mark it down! If Mike Davis sign with UGA, then you can finally mark it down that UGA will get that title that’s eluded the program since 1980. This time around the title won’t require superman (i.e., Herschel Walker) to get it done. You’ll have an experience QB, nasty D, a fleet of receivers, and a powerful run attack (Crowell (if he stays), Marshall, Malcome, and Davis)).

Talent plus innovation from the coaches will get it done. Just when the rest of the SEC homers thought UGA’s stock had “sold-off”, we’ve rebounded and only gotten stronger.

Mark Richt. The time is now! Get’r done!

The primary improvement this team will need next year is a strong OL that will allow us to have a stronger running game to save us from BoBo’s bad play calling and keep A. Murray from trying to do too much against the likes of Alabama, S.C. or any other top 10 team. The addition of Keith Marshall will add competition at that position which will raise the bar for I.C. and the running game.

Brian

The main question mark I see is the offensive line. I like the talent we’ve recruited and some of the guys we’re targeting, but this talent has to come through, because Murray is much more effective when he’s not running for his life when we play against d-lines like LSU.

As for people comparing this hype to ‘08, we’re not expected to be #1, so your comparisons are pointless. And also remember that Georgia’s defense had some obvious holes coming into that season that people overlooked… Willie Martinez isn’t coaching that defense anymore. Todd Grantham knows what he’s doing.

Geaux, no q.b.? That from an LSU fan who’s q.b. had no 1st downs in the entire 1st half against UGA. You are funny, Murray led the SEC in Q.B. rating and T.D.passes, and if it weren’t 4 the 2 dropped passes that the mighty LSU defense had been beaten on, Murray would have had 3 t.d’s against your phony defense. Oh by the way, LSU only gave up 6 t.d passes all year, but UGA had beaten your defense and would have had 3 in 1st half. One other stat for you loser, LSU was bragging about only trailing in 2 qts. all season, the 1st qtr against Oregon, and the 3rd qtr against Bama, news alert to you, UGA was ahead of the mighty LSU defense in 3 qtrs. You had better be happy UGA’s top 2 receivers dropped passes against your overrated defense, and you sure as hell should be happy that LSU got 2 T.D’s handed 2 them on special teams, and another on a fumble at the uga 21. If not the score would have been reversed, and your coach had even said he was going to take out your Q.B. since LSU had no 1st downs in the 1st half. If you had of brought out the backup q.b. against UGA’s defense, it would have been lights out for you. But keep ignoring the facts, UGA-19 1st downs, LSU-13, total yards, UGA 300, LSU 234, LSU got their asses handed to them, and everyone that watched the game knows it. I’m sure you will do better against another overrated defense in Bama, and you should be happy you get to play them for the 2nd time and not UGA, because UGA would dominate your pititful offense again, something mighty Bama couldnt do, and UGA would score t.d’s against your overrated defense, something pitiful Bama couldnt do. 2 most overrated teams in USA, LSU, and BAMA. You had better thank God for ESPN, that got both of you back in the championship game. Ok.State would light your defense up like a x-mas tree

To all LSU fans: The last NC Bama and Florida won, they returned just about their entire teams….and did not repeat. That’s a tough trick. I will say the weakness at LSU is the QB and the offense. Not a glaring weakness, but it is one. Put a stud Qb on that team, and they would need to move to the NFL.

JB, You have no idea what you are talking about. I can’t speak about Florida but from the 2009 NC team Bama needed to replace 9 of the 11 defensive starters, 3 of the offensive lineman, and the TE. That’s a total of 13 starters needing to be replaced out of 22. How is that returning just about your entire team.

Beat a good team again
Beat your main rival and not when they are down
Have a better than 500 record against top 25 teams
Have a winning record against top 10 teams
Beat every team in the SEC East in the same year for once

Think CMR & staff did a good job of ” Coaching ” this season! Yeah the asst was down, but so was the west! UGA is one of the Top teams in the SEC! What else do some of u so call UGA fans want! Look @ what UGA has lost in the past four years! CMR had 2 reload with talent! He had 2 get some Coaches on Defense so that HS could help Bobo BS more effective as a play caller! If King & Mitchell don’t drop passes UGA scores 21 on LSUs defense, & Bobo was calling the plays! Dawgs got some players, & they love being a DAWG!

3.) Leadership Void

Don’t talk about how UGA will win titles due to roster talent. They had that in 2008. They had that in 2011. Talk about UGA getting a mental overhaul…learning to play like champions. UGA is a team with a leadership and brains vacuum.

And then theres my favorite the pre-season national title trash talk every year on this blog

“Columbia but UGA has never lost 3 straight games to USCe”

Ask Clemson how relying on such silly hopes works against Spurrier lead teams.

Reality is that NONE of the issues which beset UGA were addressed this season, they were simply whitewashed with the scheduling quirk of 2011.

UGA has one of the worst RB crew in the SEC and honestly without Crowell, they are a distant last. The ALL-SEC QB is still one of the teams own worst enemies, against the actual decent teams played he has provided more scores for the other teams than for UGA. And the WRs ares as inconsistent as any in the league. Add on to that the losses on the OL and the recipe for continue struggles against the actual good teams remain.

On defense, the UGA is as overhype as any around…this is the unit which was drug up and down the field by VANDY, having rely on a chance tackle by the punter to preserve an ugly loss in Nashville, and who still is gashed for huge rushing numbers by decent teams…look at what LSU did, and just how many did the Lattimore kid have? Hades this “world class” unit gave up more yds and points to UF than any team in the latter part of the year?

The only question remains will the schedule save UGA again in 2012?

Does anybody know if our strength and conditioning program is state of the art? I know Joe T is a great guy and I have a lot of faith in him implementing a plan. My concern is do we have the right plan for him to implement?

We also finally hired a nutritionist. Now we need a dedicated room for the players to dine for their one NCAA allowed meal per day. We need to make these players feel special.

UGA needs to do a little coach shuffling in the offseason and either assign or hire a dedicated coach to be in charge of special teams. I wonder what our lead would have been at the half against LSU if that dedicated coach had made sure that we did whatever necessary to kick away from Mathieu. That blasted “honey badger” should have never touched a punt unless he caught it out of bounds.

Don’t get lulled into a false sense of security with that schedule. Having said that winning the East should be a given. No real competition from the non conference shedule as well. Still too shallow at RB to make the West nervous. What is a boundary DB and a field DB?? C’mon, the big boys in the West simply have DBs and plenty of them. If you think LSU or Alabama is losing sleep over this line up, think again.

1 out of 11 ? NCAA PROBATION back-to-back in Mark Richt era I presume is also Mark Richt’s fault ? Are their 6 bowl losses all in a row, also Mark Richt’s fault ? It could be argued that it is also Mark Richt’s fault that Georgia tek including Paul Johnson averages the # 51 recruiting class every year while Mark Richt averages the # 7 recruiting class every year all 12 years now for Mark Richt.

Give Mark Richt his EXTENSION Greg McGarity, tennis player. And, get us an indoor practice facility (not a Quonset hut, not even a whole football field.)

31-17. Saw it the other day that that isn’t beat Georgia tek by several touchdowns. Oh, yeah it is.

Kenny Anderson, I see last night was arrested in Pembroke Pines, Florida for leaving the scene of his accident where he ran off the road hitting trees and destroying all 4 tires and wheels, after going to a bar and getting drunk. It is unclear to me if the Police who smelled alcohol actually asked the high school basketball coach if he had been drinking and that the reason for him leaving, other than the statement that Kenny Anderson made that indeed he did drink at the bar with red eyes and slurred speech. Why else would he risk the leaving the scene of an accident ? Nice Kenny Anderson. We haven’t heard the end to this one yet either. Is this too Mark Richt’s fault ?

Old Dog,

There are a LOT more defections from this DISNEYdawgs.com roster for next season than just Hutson Mason. We have 33 missing from the roster this season, that were listed this time of the year last year as players who would be playing for us this season. Obviously, that has not ended. I read quite a bit into, like everyone else too, that after we got firm commitment from our Tailback for the next 3 seasons of 4,000 yards and then off to the NFL for Keith Marshall, that we are still after a top running back. Figure it out at the running back position.

What’s Jarvis Jones got to come back for ?

Linebackers, secondary, tight ends, wide receivers, tailbacks, offensive linemen, quarterbacks, defensive line – all kinds of names listed on this page with no even comment in passing of any of them leaving even possibly. Sorry, this article is bunk. You don’t have 33 leave one season, and the very next season zero.

There is NO WAY Chris Conley is BEHIND Tavarres King on the Depth Chart for 2012. No way.

Orson Charles is not coming back to be one of the Starters you brag about returning. And, as for Jay Rome, redshirting him is like redshirting Chris Conley and then YANKING the redshirt off after the season was WELL OVER, again, as we do every season on Offense around here. We cannot determine who are best players are, watching them. I predict Jay Rome is possibly another player we get to watch 2 seasons and then leave.

Kwame Geathers, Rodney Garner REDSHIRTED, and he is another like Knowshon Moreno and Jay Rome who possibly fall into this group of watch them 3 years and then gone.

Obviously, the Offensive Line is AGAIN a huge concern for Mark Richt’s Average # 52 Total Offense all 13 years next season.

The Tailback situation is NOT AT ALL as described here by Chip Towers, either. The starter is in-coming Keith Marshall, as is the Starter John Theus in-coming. Not starting these 2 in game 1, would be the same type of error we made when we started Aron White instead of Orson Charles because Aron White made all of 3 catches his freshman season, when Orson Charles made 23 catches his freshman season.

3 catches Aron White 2008. So, who was the Starter 2009 ? Aron White. This despite the fact that Orson Charles put up 23 catches his freshman season by DIRECT COMPARISON. When did Orson Charles FINALLY get recognized for this DIRECT COMPARISON ? 3 games, that’s right, it took 10 of the 13 games to convince our Offensive Braintrust to start Orson Charles, instead of Aron White.

Ray Drew, we didn’t even play him this season. Against Coastal Carolina, he got a couple of plays. Then, he sits the very next cupcake Ole Miss. Then, he plays a couple of plays vs cupcake Missy State. Then, he is set down for 4 of the last 6 games except cupcake Auburn and cupcake Kentucky, then sits out the last 3 games in a row. Nice job of not wasting talent.

Will outside linebacker Jarvis Jones has nothing to come back for. Sorry. Ray Drew should have spotted in more this season, obviously because this Depth Chart for 2012, shows Jarvis Jones as the returning starter. DISNEYdawgs.com of Chip Towers to show that, too.

Alec Ogletree ahead of Amarlo Herrera at Mo Linebacker ? What a total waste of whichever is sitting down half the game, or MORE.

We don’t have any secondary and obviously, last year Alec Ogletree was the only player we did have who could defend the forward pass.

This entire roster Depth Chart for 2012 is a TOTAL JOKE. 1st before you do a Depth Chart for 2012, you have to guess which ones are the ones who are NOT GOING TO BE HERE.

Back to the article, next year should be a great year. Our defensive line minus DeAngelo will continue to improve and be one of the toughest in the nation. Abry Jones has done a fantastic job @ DE and will only get bigger and stronger. Abry has been the clear leader and on field coach for the line. Mike Thornton will continue to improve. Jenkins and Geathers will get better. Garrison Smith
and Derrick Lott will take care of the other end. Because of this DL our LBs will continue to have great success. I am not worried @ the defense, the offense has me a little concerned. This is because of our tailback situation. I have really been disappointed in Crowell. Maybe he should have been redshirted in order for him to get in better condition and to mentally mature, then again, he did have the summer to get into shape. Rumor has it that his work ethic is not the best. Hopefully getting Marshall will help his attitude. I only hope that Marshall can stand up to the emmense pressure that is about to be thrown on him. Hopefully next year we will have a two or three back offense that will be incredible

It would be nice if we ever stop playing down to the level of our opponents, and actually had a big enough lead going into the fourth quarter of a few games to let our backup unit…especially the QB and RB’s…run the offense the entire time. (We’ve been needing to do that going back to the days of D.J. Shockley.) And I’d sure like to see Richard Samuel stay healthy. He’s been a DGD ever since he came to Athens…5 star recruit whom they decided didn’t have enough flat-out speed, so they moved him to LB. He busted his ass to learn the new position, then got moved back to RB when we needed him. Had a very good game, proving that we need a power back who can run hard between the tackles…then got hurt and missed the rest of the season.
I, too, think we can reasonably expect to contend for the SEC East next year…but I hope we don’t get picked for anything higher than that. We don’t handle it well when we pay any attention to those pre-season picks. It still stings to rememeber 2007, when we were picked #1 in the country. All the Dawg fans (who SHOULD have known better than to pay any attention to silly crap like that) were talking smack…ended up sounding like that damn FSU scum. And the team played very poorly, having to struggle to beat a couple of the teams we did beat.
I’m looking forward to next year, but it’d be better for the team if we’re not picked to win bibbidy-squat.

QB has to be a major concern. You got Mason & Lemay transferring, leaving only Murray, who is terrific against unranked teams, and 0-8 against teams that end up in top 25 ranked.

Aaron Murray got worse this year in:
1) yards
2) yards per pass
3) interceptions
4) accuracy
5) passer rating

Only area he improved his game was td’s.

Not a good leader, he should be showing the most improvement on the team, not the least.

Georgia and Auburn normally play better art each others stadiums anyways, so you can through this one out. The North Ga champion is in Athens. No contest. But its not assured at all that UGA is state champion with Ga Southern and Valdosta State having every right to claim the south GA championship.

Maybe UGA should form and join an ALL-GEORGIA conference. That may be a better option than joining the Big East since TCU is now in the Big East and would obviously run UGA off the field.

@Aloha Dawg,

Sorry, but you must extend coaching contracts unless you plan on losing recruiting battles. There is no way that you can lure prospective talent to your school if the talent if unsure of your coaching stability. These kids (and their families) get to a very personal level with coaches on the recruiting trail, and the decision lines between schools may be very thin. A coach without a contract extension is like “cankles”, it’s a deal breaker. Extend the contracts, or replace the coaches. You can’t wait for the contracts to just end. Besides, letting someone go after a contract extension is still chump-change for a $70 million dollar/year program. Ask Bama… Saban was a bargain.

Seems like “pretender” is a pretty accurate word for UGA in that game. But hey, have another glass and try to convince yourself otherwise.

Actually its in terms of looking forward you moron. How hard is it for you to see that?????
We made it this year while you sit back at 6-6 barely making a bowl game. And we return almost everyone making us CONTENDERS. Florida will be putrid again next year and probably another year after that, making you PRETENDERS.

Yep, the Dawgs will be ranked preseason in the top 10. And Richt will pull in another class of star players. And they’ll underachieve, as usual. ESPN ranked UGA’s last 10 recruiting classes as the 2nd best in the country, behind only USC. I wonder what happened to them after they got on campus? Do you think maybe Richt is too reliant on Rivals rankings? Or maybe he just doesn’t know how to coach them up?

Until special teams disasters are addressed, not much will change. We can beat the so-so teams in the league. We will continue to struggle against the upper class teams we play. ( who incidently take spc. teams play really serious) And our coach just says ” it is what it is”.

I disagree, bad dawg. IF georgia were to “win out” , and not saying they are, (but that was how you framed it), they will have had to establish a much more consistant threat running the ball. Even this year, Georgia certainly could have beat LSU, if they had a better run game. So, IF they get there, I see no reason they could not not beat either.

It’s also yet to be seen what sort of shape LSU or Alabama would be in, coming to that game. And making ALL those assumption at this point is also, delusional.

What irks me is how far we have distanced ourselves away from Ala, LSU, Fla. over the last few seasons. Now we are slipping behind Ark., and S.Carolina too. I’m not talking about in the recruitment rankings, I’m talking about BCS rankings. Fla. may be coming back to middle of the road, but not these others.

Uh, “tell me again”, are you kidding me? You want to see how these second year kids are conditioned under Coach Joe T? Really? What the heck does Joe T know about strength and conditioning? His hire is just the latest indication of why UGA won’t sniff a BCS trophy anytime in the near future. They refuse to hire coaches who have actually previously performed at the positions for which they were hired. Examples: Richt, Bobo, Grantham, Tereshinski, and, the latest…McGarrity.

Mike, do you think it’s fair to say Richt is just nonchelant about ST and other coaches “take it seriously”? Or is it that he has a couple of problems with this particular team that need to be fixed? (with depth I would speculate) I just think you are painting that with a might wide brush.

On the whole Alabama’s ST havent been anything great, with some issues, in the past couple of years. LSU is exceptionally deep this year and they also have a once in a decade guy back there, right now. But just last year they really didn’t have any better ST than UGA. same as Bama. Some spots better, some spots worse. And Surely you can’t blame Walsh’s struggles at times on the staff not taking ST seriously.

Theus should be able to contribute from the get go. I am not sure about LT, maybe bring him into the mix at RT or guard. I don’t know if I trust Murray’s blind side to a true freshman. The coaches are high on Brown[hopefully not the brown acid]but he may red shirt.

Rambo and Orson better stay. Not that they’re absolutely necessary, but the dawgs would be that much more awesome if they stayed.
