UGA’s Ben Jones racks up at Bulldogs’ Senior Gala awards banquet
3:54 pm December 12, 2011, by Chip Towers
In case you didn’t catch it ( I didn’t as I was on a farm in Blythewood, S.C.), senior Ben Jones was the big winner at the Bulldogs’ annual Senior Gala awards banquet this past Saturday night at the Classic Center in Athens. He took MVP honors and also was named permanent team captain. Interesting to note that Isaiah Crowell, The Associated Press SEC Freshman of the Year, did not receive any awards, but his cousin, Quintavius Harrow, did. Here’s what individual awards were handed out (the Governor’s Trophy for beating Georgia Tech was also presented):
- Vince Dooley Most Valuable Player of the Year Award: C Ben Jones, Sr.
- Most Valuable Offensive Player: QB Aaron Murray, So.
- Most Valuable Defensive Player: LB Jarvis Jones, So.
- Most Valuable Special Teams Player(s): P Drew Butler, Sr.; LB Kosta Vavlas, RFr.
- David Jacobs Award (for courage, spirit, character and determination): G Chris Burnette, RFr.; LB Alec Ogletree, So.
- Permanent Team Captain: C Ben Jones, Sr.
- Offensive Captains: TE Orson Charles, Jr.; OT Cordy Glenn, Sr.
- Defensive Captains: CB Brandon Boykin, Sr.; LB Jarvis Jones, So.

RedandBlackDAWG, while I agree with 90% of your comments and personally wish to see CROW ‘el succeed, I think it is especially telling that he wasn’t voted any type of award at this banquet. It is my understanding that most of these awards are voted on by the players themselves which clearly shows how much esteem they hold for him.
It’s almost as if this kid came from another planet or at least another culture. Unfortunately, this has been seen before many times and often the things these kids do, when thrust into the spotlight, becomes a major distraction to the team (Michael Vick).
The best thing that CMR and company can do is try to isolate IC from his “boys” as much as possible.

Alex Ogletree is need in OUR secondary. You don’t always play the guy at the position in college that he will play in the NFL. It would be better for him if you also did; but, it is not what I feel this team needed this season for him to play LINEBACKER with all the LINEBACKERS we had this season.
UF NMSU AU UK GT LS – we didn’t need Alec Ogletree at LB those games
My position is that he was our best defender against the pass. When he went down, a couple of plays in to the Boise State loss, and was lost for the season, that he should have not been rushed back to what THEN was and is a DEEP LINEBACKER CORPS.
If some of the 7 I think possibly are considering declaring, declare, he could well be needed next season in the secondary as well. This is where he helps this team the most, defending the pass. What will he play at the next level ? I think he is a natural at the next level at Inside Linebacker.
If you want to know where I would play Alec Ogletree, it would be at Free Safety or Strong Safety. I said that before this season started that it was a huge mistake moving him to linebacker on this team this season.
We wasted a year of him rushing him back at the end of a season, already doomed after the gutter balls thrown down both sides of the lane to start the season without him. The only possible loss I saw when he couldn’t play vs South Carolina (not the defense that gave away that game because that was Aaron Murray who did by himself), was The SEC Championship Game against Alabama, as I said at the time.
Rushing Alec Ogletree back to play LINEBACKER when we are so stacked with LINEBACKERS now, was a waste. Now, I see him playing out his career next year here and leaving. Yes, they will play him at LINEBACKER in the NFL. Where does he need to be for us ? In the old days, this is exactly who Erk Russell would have LONG SINCE PUT BACK THERE at Rover. A defensive back myself, I believe I know when I see a Alec Ogletree what I would do with him, given the stacked LINEBACKER CORPS. Amarlo Herrera (declares for NFL draft 2 years from now), Jarvis Jones (can declare now for NFL), Cornelius Washington (can declare now for NFL), Christian Robinson (Sr next year) and Michael Gilliard (Sr next year) – if there ever was a STUD LINEBACKER CORPS this is it BEFORE you rush back a guy I wanted back in the Secondary – the only guy who defended the forward pass all season long last year – so in the off-season we moved him to LINEBACKER and yes I complained then; and thank you again now, too.
I think Alec Ogletree probably would have declared for the NFL draft after next season, if we just had him take his medical redshirt for this season, anyway. But, I am not sure that next year would have been enough for him here. That was what I was banking on. As it is, you got him back at the tail end of this season, in a STACKED LINEBACKER CORPS, where he would have made ZERO DIFFERENCE. Obviously, the STUDS Todd Grantham had there at that point would have accomplished the same since we still lose to LSU as it turns out (Alabama was the better team the 1st time too.) and all the others were no bloody good and not about to beat us as a result of Alec Ogletree giving up his Starting LB to the likes of Amarlo Herrera, Cornelius Washington, Christian Robinson, Michael Gilliard and Jarvis Jones.
Put let’s give them the benefit of the doubt since what I want right now if for MARK RICHT TO GET HIS EXTENSION FROM THIS TENNIS PLAYER GREG MCGARITY RIGHT THIS NANOSECOND, and suggest that Alec Ogletree would have considered the 5 games started last season (1 at wide receiver and 4 at SAFETY) as enough including next year starting at LINEBACKER, while our Safety position is not manned by a player as good as he is back there.
Alec Ogletree was the # 2 best Safety in all of America recruited here. One service had him at # 4 best Safety in all of America. Either way, this man next season needs to be at SAFETY.

@4.29 GPA my lord but you are the master of the long winded blog comment. And where do you get the creditability to second guess CTG who by anyway you want to judge it did a great job with the defense this year? CTG is the coach that moved Alec to linebacker…do us a favor send him a email, a letter, telegraph etc. I promise no one wants this to go into another of your day long multipage rants on a premise that is steeped in your own ignorance. Let the folks that make the big bucks make the calls. CTG turned his D into one of the best in the nation this year you just look silly second guessing him.

Absolutely dead wrong about Ogletree.
He is too big to play secondary and is a perfect fit at linebacker where our DC Coach Todd Grantham placed him and he shined.
I trust a coach with NFL experience who took our defense to new levels in just 2 years.

I eyed,
I agree with you, his attitude has not endeared him to his team mates. I do believe he can make amends though, if he shows up ready to go for spring practice, hits the books and acts like he wants to be a team player. I for sure am not trying to justify his actions, just trying to say that we built this kid up to fail, an we all have to share some blame for his attitude. He could also help himself out by having a really good bowl game, but I don’t know if the coaches are going to give him the chance, or if he will be eligible if the rumors are true about his class work. He can earn his team mates respect back though if he wants it.
I think, in a way, it is good his team mates are acting the way they are towards him. It shows me that they are a team and stick together. It is almost like he needs to pay his dues to get into the club. His attitude has made him an outsider. I remember watching the game with LSU and the cameras continued to pan to him on the sidelines. I didn’t notice a lot of his team mates sitting down by him or even talking to him. I think he gets the message or at least I hope he does. It would be a real waste if he doesn’t respond to what needs to be done, and improve his attitude. I don’t think, or at least I hope the coaches haven’t given up on him, but I am sure not in a position to know what else has gone on behind the scenes. Obviously, the half game suspension he got in one game this year, because as CMR said it was because “We love him”, didn’t get through. I am gonna think positively though and think that he will improve, or at least I am hoping so. The ball is clearly in his court now. I would hope his folks also sit down and talk to the kid.. He is in need of guidance and maybe a good swift kick in his lower extremities.

Where did 4.29 come from, about the most illogical explanation of scholarships ever. Does not have a clue about how walk ons are awarded for that season and will be used in new signing class.
Dawgs will sign a full complement of 25 with Marshall and one other coming early for a possible total of 27 added total.
Yes we do lose a bunch of linebackers next year including A.O., but you are probably forgetting, Herrera, Wilson, Morant, Stripling, Turene, Burrows, Drew, Vasser plus a couple other signees.

Whether Florida was 0-8 when UGA played them or not, Richard Samuel has gone into the alumni hearts as an UNSELFISH guy WHO MANNED UP and hit that Florida D time and time again like a sledge hammer. HE wanted it. Preiod, end of story.
Had his ankle not been broken ( or the foot) Richard would have scored again on Florida with less than 15 seconds left. He went out like a WARRIOR !!!!!
Richard Samuel will be talked about when he is 60 years old.
Richard Samuel is the hero of 2011 and is now in the pantheon of legendary DOGS like Pollack or Fran The Man or Jake Scott or Royce Smith or Andy Johnson or Jimmy Shirer or Bill Stanfield or Tommy Lyons or Kevin Bulter or Scott Woener or Jimmy Orr or Spike Jones, or Sean Smith, David Green and many, many others that simply manned up on game day.

I beg to differ about the scholarships. They are for 1 year only they are not for 4 years. However, most schools honor the commitment for 4 years. Otherwise you would create a public relations nightmare. When you have some extra scholarships (a player signed did not make the grade) you give them to some walk ons as a reward but they are for a year only. The coach can make them for the next year if he wants.
