UGA’s Ben Jones racks up at Bulldogs’ Senior Gala awards banquet

In case you didn’t catch it ( I didn’t as I was on a farm in Blythewood, S.C.), senior Ben Jones was the big winner at the Bulldogs’ annual Senior Gala awards banquet this past Saturday night at the Classic Center in Athens. He took MVP honors and also was named permanent team captain. Interesting to note that Isaiah Crowell, The Associated Press SEC Freshman of the Year, did not receive any awards, but his cousin, Quintavius Harrow, did. Here’s what individual awards were handed out (the Governor’s Trophy for beating Georgia Tech was also presented):

  • Vince Dooley Most Valuable Player of the Year Award: C Ben Jones, Sr.
  • Most Valuable Offensive Player: QB Aaron Murray, So.
  • Most Valuable Defensive Player: LB Jarvis Jones, So.
  • Most Valuable Special Teams Player(s): P Drew Butler, Sr.; LB Kosta Vavlas, RFr.
  • David Jacobs Award (for courage, spirit, character and determination): G Chris Burnette, RFr.; LB Alec Ogletree, So.
  • Permanent Team Captain: C Ben Jones, Sr.
  • Offensive Captains: TE Orson Charles, Jr.; OT Cordy Glenn, Sr.
  • Defensive Captains: CB Brandon Boykin, Sr.; LB Jarvis Jones, So.
  • Leon Farmer Award (for strength and conditioning): Boykin and Jones.
  • Outstanding Scout Team Award(s): QB Greg Bingham, RFr.; LB Corey Campbell, RFr.; CB Eric Elliott, Sr.; CB Luis Capella, So.
  • Most Improved Awards: OT Justin “Bean” Anderson, Sr.;  DE Abry Jones, Sr. ; LB Mike Gilliard of Valdosta, Jr.; S Connor Norman, RFr.
  • Newcomer of the Year Award(s): WR Michael Bennett, RFr.; WR Chris Conley, Fr.; WR  Malcolm Mitchell, Fr.; LB Amarlo Herrera, Fr.; NG John Jenkins, Jr.;  DB Quintavius Harrow, Fr.
  • Coaches Leadership Award(s): Offense — Charles, Murray, Jones; defense– DE DeAngelo Tyson, Sr., and Boykin (defense); special teams — Butler

Flat Tire: Where do I send my dollar to get you into retirement?

Just kidding bro. You make a lot of valid points but work on leaving off most of the negative stuff that gives our recruitung competition something to use against UGA like they have been doing regarding CMR being fired.. That type of crap coming from a DAWG FAN ??????????????? really hurts UGA recruiting. CMR ain’t leaving and he ain’t gonna run Bobo off. Bobo is a helluva recruiter so maybe CMR could call the plays himself and give Bobo a different title. In all fairness Bobo was better this season.

Anybody who has gone from high school straight to a major university and away from home knows what a huge jump that is – throw in the fact that a few hundred thousand people all of a sudden are watching your every move along with the papers and rumor mill mongers and I think you have to admit that IC was bombed this year. He did not have the luxury of redshirting which I think really hurt him. With all he had on him, I think he actaully weathered the storm fairly well (not including the failed drug test). He could have been a little more mature – would have been nice – but he was probably a high school rock star and had his way with everything in Columbus – different story on the big stage. He is a big talent toting the rock – I hope he gets his head on straight and becomes a geat back at UGA. He certainly has the potential to be a game changer.

Keep Richt Im fine with that we just need another OC Bobo has been outcoached in every big game. If the LSU and Boise ST game didnt make you realize we need another OC nothing will.

I have said in the past that

Chris Peterson
Gary Patterson
The Air Force coach
John Gruden
Buffalo Bills OC might should be given consideration

would all be canidates

I also had

Mike Leach ( I would have loved to seen what Leach could do with our talent)
Jim Harbough
and maybe Kirby Smart but he would be my last choice

I think Alabama is doing just fine after enduring several years of the Mike Shula rants everday on Blogs and Finebaums show

What hurts UGA football is a program that cant win big. UGA hasnt won big in 6 yrs. Kids are going where they think they can win big and play pro ball.

But Im not worried about UGA recruiting.

Also

I was on here defending Gratham after the Boise game when many on here was blaming him for the loss.

I will defend Gratham; he showed consistancy every game. Bobo only one game Aub, Gratham also showed drastic improvement from over last year. Bobo once again showed the same garbage he always does; Inconsistancy.

Gratham also showed you what a real coach can do with our talent; just like Van Gorder did.

Bobo will never succeed because he is a local guy. No matter how good an OC he becomes he will never please all these offensive gurus in the stands. He has gotten better and did a heck of a job this year when he had no running game. Plus he put up more points than Bama did on LSU and could have had 14 more if not for the dropped passes. Keep up the good work Coach Bobo and you will get better and better. Coach Richt is the one in control and if he is pleased with your progress I am too.

As much I am disgusted by the negativism of FLAT at times, I found myself agreeing with him about BOBO. We may need a better OC to execute the overall plan of Richt.

Point Number One. Richt is a dufus. Anyone who can’t see that is also a dufus. Since it seems like most of the fan base are idiots, I guess that Richt will get a contract extension. What a charmed life this dufus lives.

Bobo will stay in place and continue to replicate in numbers. We will continue to have 150 pound scat backs who get creamed at the line of scrimmage when we need tough yards.

McCavity will continue to talk the talk of a Georgia Gentleman, but I question the nature of the substance between howdy doody’s ears.

The entire framework is a joke of a multi-million dollar magnitude. What enables this is an alumni base of what seems to be either idiots or homosexuals.

15 Scholarship Seniors
2 Open Scholarships not given to walk-ons available early enrollees
7 possible Juniors and Redshirted Sophomores eligible NFL Draft

Seniors Lost after Michigan State :
1-Kevin Butler Punter – have 2 already committed, both excellent, draft
2-Blair Walsh- Kicker – have 1 great 1 coming in who punts great
3-Brandon Bogotay Kicker iffy decision to begin with 2 Kickers
4-Brandon Boykin – Cornerback, may play completely different position
5-Eric Elliott – CB one of many walk-ons awarded scholarships
6-Jason Veal – ILB – another walk-on awarded scholarship
7-Mathew DeGenova – OLB – another walk-on awarded scholarship
8-DeAngelo Tyson – Defensive End
9-Bruce Figgins – Fullback never really made move from linebacker
10-Israel Troupe – Split End never really worked out like expected
11-Aron White – TE – not great hands, outspoken, may get passed on
12-Trinton Sturdivant – OL – may get passed on too many injuries
13-Justin Anderson – Right Tackle – might get picked up
14-Ben Jones – Center top NFL Draft Pick
15-Cordy Glenn – Left Tackle top NFL Draft Pick

Obviously, we lose a ton on the Offensive Line and we lose Brandon Boykin and workhorse.

We will have some transfer out. We do that every year, not playing them much.

It boils down to who is going to declare.

Who do you think declares for the NFL Draft ?

There is not much for Jarvis Jones to prove. His neck sprain seems fine. He’ll answer questions about that obviously. They won’t go away this time next year or the year after. He has a natural LB position in the NFL.

We still have a bunch of Scholarships tied up in Walk-Ons who never play. We will carry them all year next year.

It could not possibly be a worse place to lose the vast majority of our players from the Offensive Line and from the Secondary/Passing Game Defense if Jarvis Jones does as is possible.

The recruiting class is weak, coming in. 2 of my Favorite Players are coming in.

EXTENSION – if Mark Richt is not given his Extension and NOW, this recruiting class could be weak. It’s weak now. With all the wasted scholarships tied up in Walk-Ons as he did, in the Great Exodus of 33 players from this 2011 season’s roster, our Depth in year 12 is not at all where it should be. We are key players away from where Rodney Garner should have us. He has largely been totally quiet for years now. These last 3 classes now, as a whole, are not what they needed to be. We’re thin.

We have 2 Senior Walk-ons next year on the OL who never play.

We have a Senior Walk-on next year at Tailback who never plays.

We have a Senior Walk-on next year at WR who never plays.

Our whole Linebacker corps next year are all Seniors, which ones of these jump after the Michigan State game ? And, Alec Ogletree certainly for all intents and purposes is a Senior for us next season too since he is never coming back after next year with the NFL beckoning. Couple that with we have not recruited any linebackers this 2012 class at all, and you can see we must get more commitments for 2012 at Linebacker.

We have Scholarships tied up as Walk-ons this year who are Sophomores too. At Tailback. At Outside Linebacker. And, at Cornerback. At least 1 of them sees some time on Special Teams. It’s a huge large number of Scholarships tied up for Walk-Ons who would be here anyway. It’s like Brandon Bogotay, whom we tied up a Scholarship with all these years. When you don’t over-sign 25 and 85 rules, and give them away to YOUNG walk-ons, you really shoot yourself in the foot depth-wise when you have only 15 Scholarship Seniors and 3 of those 15 are Walk-ons who never played.

We don’t have a good class we can sign. We don’t have the Scholarships.

We have maybe 2 more Scholarships, not counting walk-ons who could lose their scholarships or not counting linebackers and secondary and tight ends and you could even have some defensive linemen and wide receivers who might declare – as sometimes declaring is a result of grades.

We lose a ton after next season, and we could see some of those jump right now.

Blake Sailors should have gotten a special team award. Here is a player who ran a 4.4 forty in high school and walked on a UGA. Crowell will be better prepared next year for the SEC. He definitely needs to mature. For all of you venters who are bashing him you need to consider that in high school he was allowed to do what ever he wanted. Coach T, and Coach K will put him through it in the weight room. He will either get better or he will be gone as the strength coaches at UGA are very good and very tough.

As for this weekend Avery Young is leaning to UGA and Brandon Greene is considering flipping. Eligwe has moved up GA in his mind-do not be surprised to see him flip. The FSU recruiter (Craig) is trying to do damage control this week. Georgia will close strong in recruiting. Keep in mind that most of the big name recruits were put off by the concerns about Richt’s job status. Now that his contract extension is in the works GA will close the gap.

Next up will be getting Grantham an extension.

Is this a leading indicator that he didn’t survive Finals last week?
A motivation ploy?

Bruce Figgins was a tight end along with about 5 others. Figgine I have never heard of. Alec Ogletree, first, should have been in the secondary this season as he is our best pass defender. 2nd, if you could read, it states that Alec Ogletree might as well be considered a senior since he never will come back after next season with the NFL asking him to be a 1st Round pick after next season.

I have no idea who you mean by what school.

$.29 GPA,

You wouldn’t happen to by the initials of Thomas Brown now, would you?

Now on to something that really matters. I am sure I will see a lot of the usual negative stuff shot my way after this is posted but I am going to say it anyway.
The problem with Crowell, is 85% the fault of the fans, myself included, of UGA. We set this kid up on a pedestal and acted like he was the next great thing. I realize we all hoped he could step right in and assume 90% of the running duties after the two idiots that were supposed to be the main featured RB’s in Ealey and King proved they were far from mature. Guess what. He is still a kid. He is 18 years old. I know when I was 18, back when the dinosaurs roamed the world, things were a little different. We had no choice but to grow up because we had the draft and if you were unfortunate enough to have a high number, you had to get used to wearing green for a couple of years and you got to enjoy a tropical paradise for 13 months. I know I am damn sure grew up in a hurry. That was then and this is now. We have a young, very gifted, kid whose main talent right now is his ability to carry a football, in a game, and make us feel good about this, because he can be a difference maker for our team, and give us bragging rights about a game. If we had, even had either one of those two dummy RB’s that left the team, still here this year, chances are we would have seen very little of Crowell on the field, at least for the beginning of the season. Who knows, barring injuries to Samuel, he might have even red shirted. Circumstances dictated that we start him, and he wasn’t ready physically or mentally. If we as fans of UGA, had given any thought to the whole process, we would realize that we were basically asking him to carry a bigger load than most 18 years old, in any situation should have been asked to do. We inflated his ego, told him time and again how great he was, and then when he couldn’t live up to our standards we denigrate him all to hell. There may be a few 18 year old kids out there this day and age that are ready to have a bunch of responsibility put on them, but they are few and far between. For those of you that have sons, ask yourself, if you would want your kids to be put in such a position of responsibility before you were ready to assume it.
Let’s get behind this kid and support him. Hope he matures mentally and physically and becomes a really good RB, because he has all the God given natural talent you could ask for. Next year, if all goes as planned, we will actually have some depth at RB, and all the pressure will not be on him to be superman. One thing I am sure of though, is that the kid sees this crap spewed on here about him, because he can read just like you and I. He needs encouragement, not negativity. If anybody can mentor him properly while he is in college, it will be CMR. If CMR can’t then, maybe it is just not meant to be. My money is on, this kid making a lot of people happy he is on UGA’s team before all is said and done. Quit trying to find things to be negative about and get behind him. I have seen so much crap written about players who don’t live up to our expectations, and let’s face it, these are some young folks on the team, not just Crowell. People criticize his hair style and what right has anybody to question that. It didn’t seem to work out too bad for the Heisman trophy winner now did it? We criticize him because he got his leg rolled over by a 300 pound plus lineman, and is injured. Yes, he did bring on some of his own problems, but we as fans did very little to help him mature with our expectation and exultation of him. I think personally, next year, he will be more physically and mentally ready to assume the role, envisioned for him. We just need to get behind this kid and encourage him, not beat him down all the time.

He has made 5 tackles this season and 2 assisted tackles and 1 forced fumble. He has been allowed on the field only in mop-up or special teams. Fantastic kid, who was already on Academic Scholarship before we gave up a Football Scholarship to him for 3 years, for which he hasn’t started a single game ever; and plays special teams. 5 tackles.
