Georgia football coach Mark Richt expressed Saturday his gratification over UGA’s desire to extend his contract and intimated that, contrary to reports in Texas, he did not speak with Texas A&M about its coaching job.
“I’ve said many times Georgia is the place I want to be as long as Georgia will have me. That has never changed,” Richt said in a statement. “And it’s gratifying to know Georgia wants me.
“I have not talked to any other school about a job, nor do I have any interest in doing so. My interest is having a great recruiting year and start building toward next season.”
A report Friday in the San Antonio Express-News and Houston Chronicle, citing an unnamed source, said Richt was “in the mix” for the Texas A&M job. The papers reported Saturday that Richt declined A&M’s job offer.
UGA athletic director Greg McGarity met with Richt on Friday to open discussions about extending the coach’s contract, which has two years remaining. McGarity said the meeting was planned before the A&M reports, which McGarity dismissed.
McGarity said he had not been contacted by A&M athletic director Bill Byrne and would have been if the Aggies were pursuing Richt.
Late Saturday afternoon, Texas A&M announced the hiring of Houston coach Kevin Sumlin.
McGarity said he and Richt will continue to talk about a contract extension. “He wants to be our coach,” McGarity said. “We want him to be our coach.”
Richt has a 106-37 record at Georgia, but his job appeared in jeopardy when the Bulldogs followed a 6-7 record in 2010 with back-to-back losses to start this season. The Dogs then won 10 consecutive games and the SEC East title.

Hey SSI gator,
You need to worry about your program. It is in total dissarray and is going down hill like a runaway freight train especially since you let Weis aka Pillsbury doughboy leave. If you don’t stop the train it could be years before you get back to a halfway decent team.

7576,
It’s really pretty sad…. As if it mattered if I had played…. I have played, and in my day, this would have NEVER been tolerated on the field by a coach… But hey, this is what UGA football has become… Win at all cost, no matter how you get it done… Perpetuated by the administration and by the fans… PATHETIC! and the truth of the matter, you still lost to EVERY good team you played… Priceless!

JB, between 2002 and 2010 Mr.Richt had more talent than LSU and AL so I’m buying this notion that those teams are better than GA because they over sign players.

You are trying to sum up Georgia’s entire history of success and failure’s by what has happened in the last two year’s. Your argument has no merit. I for one played a lot of sport’s in my life and the best coaches were just like Grantham , very compassionate about winning and their team’s. What you see on TV is a fraction of what the player’s get at practice. The player’s know not to take it personal.

There is almost no chance that A&M has ever had any real interest in Richt. Nobody is looking to pay that high a price for a coach who has not really accomplished anything. Good job by Richt’s people to get that rumor going though.

GT4ever, Wake up with a severe case of Dawg envy today, probation blues or just the depressing thought that Paul 1AA Johnson will be screaming at players and grabbing their facemasks on the tech sidelines again next year.? Go over to the Duke board and thump your chest over the 38-31 thrashing you gave them. I know you’re proud of jackets beating 5 teams with 10 total wins. tech playing Georgia schedule 4-8. Georgia playing Tech schedule 12-0.

Thanks for the rational thought GTBob….. Similar to thinking that CPJ would be given the time of day by a program like Penn St…. Hilarious, because neither coach richt or johnson has proven anything, but I would have to give the edge to richt, who has previous SEC C games, and a much better resume…. But don’t waste too much time on rational thought… Some of these fans are challenged….

In this day of high competition and the need for immediate gratification, coaching rumors abound at the end of most seasons. Sometimes these rumors are started simply to affect recruiting. It’s very possible that some zealous yet hard to please Dog fan, started this rumor. I think that sometimes we hire coaches that never become true Dogs. I don’t think this is true about Richt now. I mean, maybe when he was first hired as coach he wanted the job and the opportunity to coach at a big name college. Now, I think Richt is a true Bulldog, wants to coach here until he retires and wants UGA to achieve greater things than it jas to date in football.. He promised to fix the problems, and he has. Thank God CMR is a Bulldog!

CMR is focused on CMRs wallet, why would he be pushing for this now? because if we waited until we get slammed by Mich state, the heat will be back and he would not be able to the the extension. Why else should all this be done prior to the bowl game. That would be the last chance the we could beat a team that finished in the top 25 this season. Currently we are 0-3

If CTG wasn’t here we would be talking about who UGA was going to hire as HC. That’s obvious to anyone who played even pee wee football. He brought back the intensity that has been missing since BVG left. CMR HAS to have a motivator like CTG on his staff,b/c he’s just not going to motivate anyone in that Xanax stupor he walks around in during games. Not his fault, it’s just not who he is. The busted lip reminded me of when Erk used to headbutt the players. Loved it. McGarrity needs to lock up CMR and take care of CTG. Then we need a special teams coach. And CMB isn’t exactly innovative but he’s running the FSU offense that CMR wants him to run. so we are stuck with that for as long as CMR is the HC. Let’s hope Marshall can be like Warrick Dunn.

I am so disappointed that CMR isnt interested in leaving. I have not drank the koolaide of another average season. we havent been relevent in years in the sec, must less nationally. we have got used to being behind the big boys in the sec. thats so obvious from the praise im reading from our fans. We won the east only because Florida and South Carolina had down years, then we were crushed in Atlanta. “Lots to be proud of” Georgia fans need to wake up, he is mediocre at best…. Thats the real truth. Why would Texas A& M even want him Fans are fooling themselves

GT just wishes they had a DC like UGA has, and if they were man enough to admit it, they wish they had a regular offense like 99% of the rest of the NCAA does. That why bitter tech. fans like GT4ever, come on to this board and insult UGA coaches.
Just think, next year we get to see the T.O. offensive scheme for two weeks in a row. First GA. Southern and then Tech. A nice way to wrap up the season after having played some real teams in the SEC. It will not help our defense much, getting ready for an SEC West team, but the offense can have a field day, against the weaker defenses of these two.

Btw, I like Grantham’s style too. His is a great style for a DC. CMR’s style is a lot like Tom Landry…As a HC. We are in good hands and Bobo is coming into his own. UGA os back as a factor in the SEC and will be back as a factor in the nation soon. I’m confident GA will open next season near the top ten and move up from there.
