McGarity opens contract extension talks with Richt; again denies A&M rumors

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity met with football coach Mark Richt on Friday to formally open discussions about a contract extension.

McGarity said further talks will be held, perhaps next week, but that UGA and Richt are in agreement on the central point: “He wants to be our coach. We want him to be our coach.”

McGarity added: “There’s really no need to speed through anything right now because he and I are in a good place.”

Richt has two years left on his existing contract, but his job appeared in peril when the Bulldogs opened this season with back-to-back losses to Boise State and South Carolina. A 10-game winning streak and SEC East championship removed Richt from the much-discussed “hot seat” and all but ensured a contract extension.

The McGarity-Richt meeting came on the morning after rumors and reports surfaced that Texas A&M was targeting Richt for its coaching opening. McGarity said the timing of the meeting was unrelated to that speculation, in which he said he put no credence.

McGarity said Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne had not contacted him and would have done so if he were pursuing Richt.

“You don’t waste your time on [rumors] that have no legs,” said McGarity, who added that he has no doubt Richt will be the Bulldogs’ coach next season and beyond.

“We just know Mark is going to be our ‘ball coach,” McGarity said.

Friday morning’s meeting, held in McGarity’s office, was the athletic director’s first with Richt regarding a contract extension.  The two had planned since last week to meet at some point late this week, McGarity said.

“This is the first time we’ve had a chance to get together and start discussing the process,” McGarity said. “You sit down when things are calm, talk through things on his list, things on your list, soak that information in.

“I need to review certain things with [UGA president Michael Adams] and review some ideas and thoughts I may have now that we have had a discussion, and at some point in time we can get back together. . . . We are moving forward on discussions on the future.”

McGarity would not disclose details such as potential contract parameters.

“We discussed several things, but I’m not ready to say what those things are,” McGarity said.

Richt’s contract, most recently amended in 2008, is a complicated document. Variables to be discussed could include how many years are added to the deal, whether Richt gets a raise from his current income of about $3 million annually and how provisions such as buyouts would be affected.

Richt didn’t publicly address the contract-extension matter or the Texas A&M speculation on Friday. He also didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Richt has said frequently over the years, including as recently as last week, that he wants to complete his coaching career at Georgia.

“It’s too hard emotionally for me to recruit guys and look them in the eye and say, ‘I’m going to be your coach,’ and knowing deep down, maybe, if something better comes along I’m leaving,” Richt said last week. “I just didn’t ever want to operate that way.

“So Georgia’s my home and my family’s home.”

McGarity noted that Richt has a busy schedule this weekend, with many recruits visiting campus.

“I’m sure we’ll meet a couple other times after he gets through this weekend and things settle down,” McGarity said.

McGarity said Texas A&M was not mentioned in his meeting with Richt on Friday or in his trip to Tampa with Richt on Thursday for an Outback Bowl contract-signing party.

“I didn’t even ask,” McGarity said.”He’d tell me [if anything were going on]. . . . Nothing came up other than Georgia.”

Richt, Georgia’s coach since 2001, has a 106-37 record with the Bulldogs. His team reached the SEC Championship game this season for the fourth time, the first time since 2005.

The Bulldogs’ 10-3 record this year followed their two worst seasons under Richt, 8-5 in 2009 and 6-7 in 2010.

McGarity said discussions about possible changes in the contracts of Richt’s assistant coaches will come later.

Rumors are flying in Texas about Saban. Texas is looking to unload Mack Brown and bring in Saban. Certainly the Longhorns have the money, their arrogance is an ideal match for the smugness of Saban. Jerry Jones is beside himself with his spectacular Billion Dollar Mansion built to house Champions, and the inability to win games. Saban has connections with some of the Cowboy brass, one of whose son was Saban’s QB for 3 yrs, and is eager to prove the Dolphins fiasco wasn’t his fault but rather a case of poor ownership, the same franchise that even Bill Parcells couldn’t turn around.

A&M is interviewing Kirby Smart who has the backing of former Ala HC and A&M alum and trustees member Gene Stallings.

I’m hoping that McGarity, who can see some problems with our program without the emotional hangups Richt has, can have some give and take with Mark about some changes that need to be made for the betterment of the program, starting with making Bobo recruiting Cord and hiring a million dollar a year ” best available” new OC and letting the guy have some input. Our offense is stale and predictable and needs a shot of “newness”. Make the DC’s we play EARN their money.

UGA needs to be very careful, as soon as Richt gets a new contract he’ll likely go back to doing nothing. The man’s a loser. Anything longer than a 3 year contract extension would be absurd. No raise, only bonuses tied to achievements. Coach has showed that he has the potential to recruit great talent, but lacks the self discipline to follow through on player development and maintain the cutting edge that separates winning teams from Championship teams. As an example, how many CMR Ford commercials did we see pre-season? I personally didn’t see very many and I assume that is because he was more focused on his job, which happens to be UGA’s head FB coach. Now that he’s won a few games and backdoored into the SEC Championship it’s raining CMR Ford “tough” commercials all over again.. Seems to be a pattern. Will we be seeing the ‘Water Girl’ peddling carpet next season? This Dawg fan hopes not.

His main fault is, he his not too bright. Not too bright people tend to surround themselves with people of similar of lesser intelligence. Georgia’s recent problems are not from a lack of talent. They are from mediocre coaching and a lack of leadership. Richt will not win a conference or national championship. Eight or nine games a year ain’t bad, and he will jump through Adams’ hoops.

@Gabloger ………….. Let’s just be honest, in the spirit of giving credit where credit is due, Nick Saban is much like Jimmie Johnson. A real jerk but one helluva coach. He took LSU to prominence back 2003 and left LSU in a very good position recruiting wise and the NC put them in the limelight for future recruits. LSU fans can say what they want, but Saban’s influence is still a part of that school’s current dominance. Then, tricky Nick goes to Bama and has done the same thing. He is great as a coach, poor as a human being.

As for UF, Urban had a once in a lifetime player in Tim Tebow. Just a fact and he is going to find out how hard it can be without him at OSU.

Contracts being extended also has to do with recruiting, a recruit wants to know that the coach is going to be there for the next 4 years. Then, the school can still terminate it and buyout anytime they like. I don’t see Richt being at UGA for 4 more years, the pressure will be there for a NC and just don’t think he will ever bring one to Athens.

Goff zero
Donnan zero

Richt has won 2 in 11 years and played for 2 more.

He went 6-7 and people crowed. He made changes and listened to his boss and kept his job.

He deserves an extension and a chance to continue getting better. In this day and time, you can fire somebody whenever you want to anyway. Recruiting will get smashed without the extension.

I do not see why Richt is getting a contract extension for doing a fair job this year. Richt is a model human being and it is hard to come by a guy with the character and integrity that he has a football coach and a man but Richt is a football coach first and he makes $3 million dollars a year with incentives. In his 11 years he does have an impressive win loss record and he is in top ten in that category. So to avoid being called a “fair weather” fan, are the fans on this blog comfortable with winning 9-10 games a year and a conference championship appearance every now and then or do you want to win a national championship? I for one believe UGA should expect championships with the resources available at UGA and in the state of Georgia. I will not go as far as to say fire Richt but if there is a better coach available I believe UGA should at least make an inquiry.

There is so much inaccuracy to this statement and it isn’t even that big of a statement to begin with. 2-3 against teams with winning records? First off, if you want to use that whole “end of the year” crap, then, well, wait until the end of the year. Three SEC teams with .500 records are currently in bowls and could end up with a winning record. SEC teams typically play very well out of conference, especially in bowls.

Second, again the “ranked at the end of the year” argument is garbage. Where would the teams UGA beat when they WERE ranked be if they had beaten UGA? Still ranked! Auburn is still ranked. If your bugs could beat lowly UVA or Miami, they would be too.

As to another point off topic a little, but related to Auburn being ranked. There has to be some way to rank teams besides won and loss records. I watched Oregon several times this year and they are no better than Auburn. Better offense, worse defense. Oregon is a mid level SEC team, yet they are ranked so high because the conference they play in is so weak. AR will beat KS by 90. There has to be some way these morons who rank the teams look at the talent on the over all team and the talent of the competition they play week in and week out.

Are we serious about this? What if we get blown up/beat down my MSU which I seriously think will happen. UGA has not beaten anyone this season and lost 3 games to Boise, LSU, and SC at home. Yes we won the East but SW Dekalb could have won the east this season with the sorry slate of teams we had. Even with the bad teams (UF, UT, VAndy, MS State, we still barely beat all those teams and only the Gtech and Auburn games were blowouts. Since Richt has been here we have had Auburn go undefeated 3 times with one championship (Terry Bowden, Tubberville, and Czick), Alabama 1 championship playing for another, Florida 2 championships but down due to coaching retirement/change, LSU 2 championships going for a 3rd. How are we getting better when the competition is taking turns and we are still stuck and maybe going in reverse. I applaud Richt for all he has done but didnt we see what a bad contract can do for you (Gtech basketball Paul Hewitt). Indeed Herschel is long gone from McWhorter Hall but the talent level in the state is such that NC should be recurring.

Saban followed Schula and won national title in 2-3 years with those players, Meyer followed Zook and won national title in 2-3 years with those players , CMR followed Donnan and is still searching. Zook was great recruiter, bad coach: Donnan was great judge of talent, good recreuiter, bad game day coach: Shula was over his head in all areas. My point is Saban and Meyer BUILT championship teams quickly with what they had and what they brought in in 2-3 years. CMR had as much talent as either but has underperformed due to coaching decision (assistants, coordinators, areas of responsibility ect.) and a lack of control over the program in the area of accountability for actions by both coaches and players. Until he (or someone) gets serious about this program we will be good but not the caliber of UA, LSU and UF of the past 8-10 years. I love the Dawgs and CMR but it is what it is. We have to decide to change or live wih what we have and that decison is above my pay grade so I’ll just continue to support UGA because I am and always will be a “DAWG”.

I did not get that information from the media. I got this in an email last night. The source also stated the following:

“According to sources close to the situation, Richt’s agent was presented with tentative terms of approximately 5 years at the upper range of the $3 million a year mark by A&M. This evening, Richt’s agent countered with a proposal. It is our understanding that Texas A&M is digesting this counter-proposal and trying to arrange the financial resources with donors. If A&M feels the financial terms are reasonable and doable and they decide to formally offer/accept terms, they could agree to a tentative deal as early as tomorrow.”

I’m sorry it bursts your bubble to think that Coach Richt might be savvy enough to put feelers out there to either secure his UGA job or get a deal to move on to something else. No need to get mad… especially because I think if UGA just offers an extension, he will stay.

Even if UGA played a perfect game I do not think they would have won the game it just would have been more interesting. The guys on the defensive side of the ball were emotionally spent after the first half and they could not sustain the effort they gave. What makes me mad is when some people say UGA quit that game. They did not they got worn down and had nothing left to give. LSU rotated its offensive line, defensive line, running backs, defensive backs and linebackers and they had the luxury of placing five star players on special teams i.e. Jarvis Landry. UGA had walk ons on special teams i.e. Blake Sailors and Costa Vavlas (spelling). The amount of depth they had was mind boggling and the lack of depth for UGA was exposed in the second half. Texas A&M would be a perfect fit for Richt. I’ve lived in west Texas and you don’t know how big a part religion plays in those people’s lives. There are hundreds of momas and grandmommas who would love to send their boy children to play football for a man of faith. One would think that would be the case here in GA but we have a few more degrees of heathenism/hedonism than those farming and cattle ranching Texans do. Richt is a good man and good football coach, and we all know the saying about “nice guys”. He sure isn’t using his job here a stepping stone to elsewhere. I here that Penn State wants to interview him, and that’s just what they would need to blunt the damage and start the healing process. Many would think that’s an upward move (not me), but he won’t go, he’s here for the long haul. Look how he agonized over firing Martinez, and letting King and Ealey go. His coaches and players are extensions of his family, and a parent doesn’t give up on a child, brother, or sister. They have to self destruct. He’s loyal, honest, he cares, and he’s dug in. So, we all might as well get comfortable with it, he’s here for as long as he wants to be and he’s got a chance in the not to far future to bring us another national championship.

Kerryb, you are 100% right, but the mistake that UGA fans make is that they think at some point one of these top recruiting classes is going to break through and become a power. Eventually you are going to have to realize that the talent isn’t whats holding you back.

I think I agree with giving him another couple of years extension based on the fact that the defensive coordinator hire has worked out VERY well and I believe he knows he needs to get it done SOON. The recruiting has been awesome and as long as the offensive play calling improves from here on out (like it improved this year), we can play with anyone. I say give him a two year extension at the same pay rate and if he doesn’t get it done in two years, it’s time for a change. We’ll eat the last few years of the contract and get the next “hot” coach on the market.

You’re a contracting genius. Can I hire you to be my agent? Same pay rate. LOL. Richt would be as good as gone to College Station, Texas.

ArkieAG, the bottom line is that just like the NFL a school cannot come in and speak to a coach under contract without getting permission from the school he is under contract too. UGA would sue A&M if they did that.

While UGA could sue, they wouldn’t. I think you may not have understood my original post, anyway. Flirting with A&M is just a way for Coach Richt to make UGA fish or cut bait. It is a smart move on his part.

Nick Saban’s career winning percentage .708

Now I know all the comments about NC’s are going to start. The BCS is a whacky crap shoot all you can control is Conference Championships. Saban has won 3, Richt has won 2.

Mark Richt’s bowl record is 7-3
Nick Saban’s bowl record is 6-6

After 10 years of coaching in the SEC Nick Saban is 102-28
After 11 years coaching in the SEC Mark Richt is 106-37

So you take out that wacky thing of getting into the BCS game (for which you have to be a media darling and have no control over) Richt’s career stats are comparable to Nick Saban’s.

I have seen our fans brag about some of the worst teams I have ever seen in college football [i.e. Florida, Georgia Tech (seriously?), etc]. Should we not expect to beat Georgia Tech? Should we not expect to win national championships with the resources available in the state of Georgia? Should we sit back and compare meaningless statistics with other fan bases who have won one or more national championships in the last 10-15 years or should we realize that UGA has not won a national championship in 31 years. The talk about winning the national championship “next year” is downright embarrassing as a future UGA alum. I hope the extension is no more than 2 years and with the schedule looking favorable again next year I would like to think that Mark Richt and staff would seize this wonderful opportunity and make dawg nation have something to brag about other than beating Ga Tech or other nobodies.

CP wants this UGA job badly and would leave Boise and the Big East in a second. Smart basically has the job with A & M and I think the Richt rumors have been leaked by CMR’s agent. They were leaked to initiate extension talks and it has worked. I told you this would happen two weeks ago. It was done in October by Grantham’s camp but the agent did a poor job of timing. He said NFL teams were calling….Now who in the NFL is making plans for 2012 in early October 2011??? Nobody…… so McGarity didn’t bite on that one. If the Richt/A&M rumors were true then my sources inside the program would be plotting the next move… which is Chris Peterson. CP wants this UGA job badly and would leave Boise and the Big East in a second. Smart basically has the job with A & M and I think the Richt rumors have been leaked by CMR’s agent.

Peterson has been on the A&M radar, too. Smart is a contender, but lots of chatter about Sumlin.

In watching Muschamp & Weiss over the years I always thought Weiss was a better OC and Muschamp was in his element as a DC.

I think unloading Weiss is premature but Muschamp………….well, I have little faith in that guy as a HC. But in fairness I think UF fans should support the guy for at least another season or two to see if he turns that program around.

But who am I to talk – we’re extending a contract to a guy who has two years left on his current contract, hired and has kept Mike Bobo as his OC and cannot beat a good team for love nor money.

Go figure.

Richt is a good man who practices what he preaches. He puts the well being of the individual ahead of the team. It’s a Christian virtue I happen to agree with. However, it is somewhat incompatible with football … a team sport. It’s precisely how Bobby Bowden operated and why so many FSU offenders served short sentences and were back playing ….. all forgiven and loved. I think it’s why you see the same thing at Georgia. Saban and Miles operate differently. Their teams won’t be loved and forgiven if they don’t play hard for 60 minutes. And no individual player is going to screw them over. I like Richt. It’s nice not to see a coach cursing on the sidelines. With the athletes we get he’ll always win 8-9 games consistently. It’s better than going the way of Tennessee and Florida.

Joey

I think we should extend Richt’s contract, but with no raise, just bonuses for winning the East, winning the SEC, etc.

He does NOT deserve a raise for beating 10 teams he was favored to beat, and losing to the 3 teams who were favored.

@TampaDawg,

Thanks! I’m having a hard time understanding the reasoning for this firing talk with no viable solution other than that “someone” is out there besides Richt. I’m disappointed that we have been so close on several occasions. The last few years saw us reaching rock bottom. It sometimes takes a season like that in order to right the ship. There was a drastic improvement from last year. Some will say that we had a weak schedule this year, but our schedule was even weaker last year and we still lost 7 games. Things are looking up. I for one prefer to let this thing play out and allow the people with the authority to make changes make those changes if they feel it’s necessary.

I think most of this negative talk stems from the fact that the SEC has won the last 5 MNC (soon to be 6) and we haven’t been among those teams. Richt will get his. There’s an urgency there that I haven’t seen in the last 4 years.

Give him an extension with a clause added.

Have it read : “For each win vs a team who ends up in the AP Poll Top 25, you will receive a bonus of __________. For each win over a team who ends up in the AP Poll Top 10, you will receive an ADDITIONAL BONUS of __________.”

Otherwise, I feel the annual Total Compensation for Mark Richt at $ 3,500,000.00 is more than enough monies we are paying.

The man is a good man. The man has had NO ATHLETIC DIRECTOR with Head Coaching Experience to mentor to him. I am not making excuses for Mark Richt. Michael F. Adam$ hired him with NO HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE. We owe Mark Richt a mentor to teach him the areas in which he needs to learn the job. Such as his hiring of a coaching staff. Vincent Dooley hired The University of Georgia a ton a GREAT HEAD COACHES. Mark Richt for one, but then never was given the opportunity to teach Mark Richt how he hired, Erk Russell, Andy Landers and all the other GREAT COACHES that Vincent J. Dooley hired here. Mark Richt is owed a mentor from a Major Program with Head Coaching Experience. Mark Richt tries this, then tries that, to learn on the job. 11 years and we haven’t provided him what he needs yet.

Give him his same contract amount. Add to it the 2 ADDITIONAL BONUSES listed.

He can recruit. The kids like him. I like him. I have always liked him.

I am not satisfied with 106 wins out of a possible 152 wins available to him; am less than tickled with the 17 losses to teams none of whom end up in the top 25 without their wins over him these 11 years; and I am not satisfied with 17 wins out of the 44 games he played against teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 25 in 11 years, nor I am satisfied with the 3 wins out of the 14 games in 11 years he has played against teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 10.

I am however, totally satisfied with him as my Coach.

Well, he needs to learn how to DISCIPLINE. Christians forgive. That is the OPPOSITE of DISCIPLINE. For example, when Isaiah Crowell turned his back on Mark Richt in my presence at the last game, Mark should have taken Isaiah by the hand, and walked him to the locker room and had Security assist him getting his uni off and take him to his momma, his high school coach, or whoever. Then, when he came back I could have my say with him.

Ok.

First off, great to see Keith Marshall getting a post in. Just kidding, but anyway. I love your post and agree with about 95% of it. Except that line. You can discipline people and forgive them at the same time. I discipline my kids, but when they make mistakes, I obviously forgive them ALSO. Same thing with CMR. He has suspended kids, kicked them off the team, ran them into the ground (Christian Robinson was tweeting about having to run bleachers on the morning of a final exam), and benched them too during his tenure at UGA. Don’t take the money to the bank until the ink’s dry.

You guys need to read the BCS rules and get off the kick of having to win your conference to play in the NCG. The rule say’s the #1 & #2 ranked teams shall play in the NCG. In fact the only way a conference can put three teams in the BCS is when 2 non champions are ranked #1 & #2; which is what would have happened if Georgia had beat LSU. It will be interesting to see what comes of these talks between Richt and his AD. To me, the main difference in Richt, Saban, and Miles is Richt sat at Florida State for 15 years and never worked anyone else while Saban and Miles moved around and worked with different people. Richt hired young assistants with no experience and trained them his way.

All the calls for Kirby Smart would only reinvent the wheel and it would take 10 more years to get back to where we are now. It will also be interesting as to who Muschamp will hire as an OC. Any thoughts on Bobo moving to Florida? For all calling for Bobo’s head who’s to say that without Richt he would be a total different OC.

Really all we need to worry about now this getting ready for Michian State and recruting the best players we can. We are playing a pretty good Miscian State team.

Talked to a BAMA buddy of mine today. Real concern is starting to brew over Saban’s future, especially if LSU wins the BCS game (which evidently many in Alabama seem resigned to, to my surprise). I asked about UT vs. Dallas Cowboys. Conventional wisdom says Saban will only move if it is a step up and UT is seen as a lateral move. I tend to agree with that assessment but confess to some surprise that this is even a minor issue in Alabama.

The other concern relative to Saban’s status is how this will affect the team’s mental preparation. When I suggested Saban would never allow something like that to happen my friend reminded me we were talking about 18-22 year old kids whose minds could be anywhere. In some corners, it looks like the Bama folks really are worried about what could be next on a few fronts. Wonders never cease I guess.

Georgia has 122 wins, nearly 10 wins a season.

Georgia is # 9 in wins starting 1999 and Texas A and M is # 52.

Mark Richt and Bryan McClendon got a KEEPER 2 days ago. I’ve made the point for a while that the season is not over, yet. McGarity said after week 2, “we won’t make decisions until the season is over.”

I’m just saying, heaven forbid, what if MSU kills us. 10-4 is justification for a raise? Not in my opinion. Winning the East, as poor as it was this season, IS justification for an extension, but until Richt can start beating some top-ten teams, he doesn’t deserve a raise. His salary is already firmly in the top ten of college coaches.

A coach, any coach, getting a raise a week or so after losing a game by 32 points to a 13 point favorite, is ludicrous.

We have now, Dawg fans who have morphed thier arguments to settle on ” well, We won a lot of games against a weak schedule.” OK, but last year we lost to a weak schedule. So beating a weak schedule would be better right? In some universes that is considered improvement.

So when those of us who saw this potential for improvement over 2010, put it out there, we were called homers and kool-aid drinkers. All summer how terrible we would be again. Now that it has turned out to be exactly the case that we DID improve, we are STILL wrong because appearantly the retroactive argument going into the year was really about not being a national title contender this year. OH we all knew we would win a bunch of games. And lets just ignore the comments all summer that prove what BS that is.

Never.

I know that’s not saying much. But, trust me on this one. Michigan State is the Real Deal. If we are going to beat them, they are a COMPLETE TEAM. They have a top-notch QB; their Defense is 2nd to none, and their Special Teams are solid. This is a reflection of their coaching staff – they have it going on. In my 50 years following them, I can recall maybe 3 teams close to this good. This is better this year for them.

It’s amazing how much self righteousness is being displayed by the “Richt or nothing” crowd. You guys stake your claim to being the only “true” Bulldog fans based solely on your loyalty to Richt. Screw you idiots. All of you. A “true” Bulldog fan wants what’s best for the program…… and what’s best for the program is for the coach to win championships with the plethora of tools that he’s been he’s provided to perform the job. Yes. Richt has done a “good” job. But in today’s game, it’s about national championships and Richt only SNIFFED ……ONE. The year that was so crazy that a 2 loss LSU got the luxury of beating THE always over ranked ohio state (under case intentional because they aren’t worth capitalization). The point is, we all love CMR as a man and as a good coach but he needs to get the ultimate goal accomplished during the first two years of his forthcoming contract or it’s time to give someone else the opportunity. I mean, what would you rather have, a coach that continues to produce the same ol’ same ol’, business as usual crap that we’ve been dealing with for the past few years (despite the excellent recruiting, facilities, tradition, etc.), or would you rather have someone come in and actually get the job done? So stop staking claim to being the only “true” fans because you thump your bible to the same church he goes to, or because he’s a good guy, or you like his tan. We all love the man. But we love THE UGA more! GO DAWGS!

Good point, SSIgator. Georgia under Richt this season didn’t beat a single team that was worth a damn. Not a one. Look at the entire list – they all suck, especially the conference foes.

Of course, one thing to say in Richt’s defense: bad teams lose to other bad teams all the time. So if the Dawgs beat 10 losers in a row, they must at least be good or the luckiest team in the world. Since no one’s that lucky, I’ll give Richt credit for fielding at least a good team this year.

Maybe he should stick around for another year at least.

The money is really not the issue. There will be some added compensation components because you can’t have Richt looking bad in the deal, but it’s really about sending a signal about stability. Either Richt’s thier guy, or he is not. They aren’t looking at scores of particular games in that meeting.

AD, Richt didn’t get a pay after cut last season’s debacle, right. Why should he get a raise for having one good, not great, season after a mediocre one, then a losing one?

I was all for his raise (like it matters what I think) after ‘07. Richt lost a couple he shouldn’t have then came within a gnat’s ass of getting in the big game. The gnat’s ass being the missed Vandy chip shot FG that would have put UT out of their misery, and put UGA in the SECCG.

He has done nothing since ‘07 however, to deserve a pay raise. He has repeatedly lost to equally talented teams, usually by ugly scores, and just did it again.

Doesn’t failure to beat a Top-10 team in several years (Tech ‘09 doesn’t count) NOT “send a signal about stability?”

Giving Mark Richt a raise, instead of an extension, with big, big, incentives is just ludicrous.

AlI I want is a coach who competes for and wins SEC titles. If that happens and some stupid computer one day decides that we are worthy of going to the BCS Championship game over 2 or 3 equally deserving teams from other conferences, I’m sure I’ll enjoy it as much as the next Georgia fan. Until then I won’t measure any coach over how many fictional “titles” his school claims.

I haven’t been the biggest Richt supporter in recent years, but our appearance in the SEC Championship game this season and his past history of championships should buy him a couple more seasons at UGA. To you people ragging on the Gators…….

Outside of losing to LSU and Bama (and Georgia lost by a bigger score to LSU than Florida did…..while basically playing a home game and at the peak of their performance this year)…….Florida lost to SEC opponents by 6.6 points per game….including being dominated by the Dawgs by 4 points in their best season in a long time and in Florida’s worst season in a long time). That is less that one TD per game…..and that can be turned around next season….easily. Florida’s defense is as good and maybe better than the Dawg’s defense, and I have no doubt that the Florida offense will be significantly better next year. So enjoy your childlike posts about the Gators and continue to dig a big hole for your heads to fit into……the Gators are just a few pieces from winning the East once again…..and those pieces are already committed this year (and they aren’t going anywhere……as clearly stated by every major recruit commit to the Gators last night in the Gainesville Sun. And plenty more big time recruits are on their way….including two of the top WRs in the country……The Swamp will be crawling with very hungry and mean Gators again….very, very soon. And they will make their way over to JAX for dinner as well.

……and the Gainesville Sun just profiled the top 5 OC candidates for the Gators…..and they are all big time OCs from the top programs in the country…..other than Kerwin Bell…..who is considered to have a brilliant offensive mind…..and will not take an assistant coaching position anywhere else but Florida.

So keep digging that hole….and keep posting childish comments (and ill-informed as well) on here. You gotta laugh out loud.

I didn’t say they weren’t different TampaGator, just giving you examples of some of the silly and ironic things Florida and Tech fans say on these boards…after a season in which both lost to Georgia.

As for Florida being down, I’m not so sure the program hasn’t been in a downward trend for some time now. The glorious Tebow years (and this guy even makes Denver a winner) have masked the fact that the last 10 seasons have seen quite a drop from the glory days of the 90s. Florida has had 5 seasons with five or more losses since the 90s – ‘02, ‘03, ‘04, ‘10, and ‘11. ‘05 was a good but not great 9-3, and of course we have the Tebow years (’06-’09) where Florida seemed to be picking up where they left off after Spurrier. That four year stretch is starting to look more and more like an aberration.

I’m not sure it’s all that ignorant to say that Florida may be returning to their traditional place as a middle-tier SEC program. If you look at the entire history of the program, including the 59 years without a conference championship, that seems more likely than this (and 2010) being written off as a mere “down year.”

Did Richt get a raise after the ‘07 season, in which he finished 2nd in the national rankings? Yes, a big one.

Has he met that standard since then? No.

Has he even been close to ‘07 standards? No.

AD, what is the (new) standard, then? 1) Beat teams you are favored over?, 2) Just be proud to get invited to play awesome teams like Boise?, 3) Try not to lose in the SECCG by more than 40?

Joey, you are arguing about reasons to keep Richt or not. Different issue. He got a raise in 07 because that is what happens when coaches contracts are extended.

Let me ask you a question, why would you retain a coach if you are just going to publicly dress him down? To me thats not a very good statemnt on made by UGA, or Mcgarity.

The money is just a formality. They will package it within a multifaceted contract to be in “line” financially to show full confidence that they expect great things, while trying to not look exorbitant.

Dawg fans….

I am sitting here watching your QB recruit from Dwyer, FLorida…….Faton Bauta……(compared to Tebow). The kid is big and very strong. Hard to bring down. But I am not sure why this kid wants to go to Georgia to play QB……because he cannot pass the ball downfield with any accuracy at all….very weak arm. But he can run well and is a very gifted athlete. But I do not see him playing QB in college. He will either be a RB, LB, or safety at Georgia.

A school is judged by the number of major bowl trips, as to whether it is a relevant program. NCs do not alone define that because 98% of all major colleges like Ok State or Duke or NC or VaTech or MD or many, many others like Wisconsin or Iowa have never won ANY NC.

No, ………… major bowls like Cotton, Fiesta ( only in the last 20 years) or Orange or Sugar or the ROSE and even now the Capitol One or the Outback Bowl DO determine that status.
Take GT. In 44 years they have been invited to ONLY TWO MAJOR BOWLS in that time period.
1967 Orange A LOSS
2009 Orange A LOSS

Before 1967? Oh, that would be the 1955 Sugar Bowl.

UGA for example has been in the same 44 year era been to several ( 6) Sugar Bowl games and about ( 5) Cotton Bowl games and about 4 Capitol ONe bowl games and with Jan. 12 ’s game about ( 4) Outback Bowls. MAJOR BOWLS these are not ………. the Sun Bowl or the Chic Fil A or the Gator or GT’s favorite, the Independence.

GT has attended 3 major bowls since 1955. THAT is NOT a major college program.

Richt is a decent football coach. The coaches are all vastly overpaid and most of the difference maker players on all of the teams that matter cant even speak proper English. It is what it is. Better odds of winning with Richt than any new regime. Wish there was an easy fix but there is not. Your posts show you have no experience in multi-million dollar companies

Running the local Altamaha River boat ride is hardly considered management skills

Any person on this blog thinking Richt deserves a contract extension after 1 yr of decent ball against terrible competition has no clue in running a real company. Looking at 1 yr improvement and immediately signing someone to a contract is not business smart

Any real business person wants to send a trend; one season is not a trend.

Is McGarity a puppet of Richt?

Has UGA become a Progressive Think Tank blissfully happy to accept money from the athletic program but naive enough to not invest in it to find a decent coach?

Is DAWG NATION more informed and savvy than UGA Administration?

Sick of saying to yourself, ” Next year will be better” ?

Short term test: The Dawgs have a better record next year than this year.

Long term test: UT, UF and Auburn began a rebuild THIS SEASON. The Dawgs began three years ago. Will The Dawgs recover and perform like an SEC Team next season or will they drop into the pool of obscurity?

The Texas rumors were started by Barners. Mack Brown will be the Coach at Texas next year and Coach Saban will have Alabama in the hunt for another National Championship. Win or lose this year, we will be in the mix again next year. Mark Richt is a good person of outstanding character, but his football players have no discipline and never play to their potential after they are recruited. Since Richt has been Coach at UGA, Meryer, Saban, Chizik and Miles have won SEC and National Championships. With the talent and schedule UGA has next year, you should have a great team. The question is, will you?

Since the SEC started its annual parade of BCS Title winners in ’06, Richt’s UGA team is just 30-18 in conference play. Admirable record until you consider Georgia’s only winning record against the BCS Title teams is versus Auburn. Yes the Bulldogs played for the SEC title last Saturday, but they were clearly overmatched, and got to Atlanta because they didn’t have to face the league’s top three teams (LSU, Alabama, Arkansas) in regular season play.

McGarity knows better than “most” on this board when it comes to evaluating coach Richt. I said “most” because some of you are convinced that your opinion is better than McGarty’s. There is only one way you can change this. When you replace McGarity as the next AD at UGA, then you get to call the shots. Sure, it’s a free world, state your opinion, just don’t expect any changes anytime soon.

For the rest of you UGA haters, we don’t care about your opinion. It has no bearing or relevancy. In most cases, it is only indicative of your dislike of anything UGA. We could have Vince Lombardi as the head coach and you would criticize.

A special message for all you gators that love to crowd any message board relating to UGA. Thanks for your support. Your persistent allegiance to UGA sports blogs not only keeps UGA relevant to the AJC but it reminds us of gator inferiorty to the dawgs. We like Muschamp as much as you like Richt. The Sec has, obviously, been the best conference in the country for quite a few years now. During his time at UGA Coach Richt has a losing record against 2 teams. Florida (3-8) and now LSU (3-4). That is pretty impessive. He is missing that NC that would be the feather in his cap. A lot of breaks need to go your way and they got so close in ‘02, ‘03, ‘05, and ‘07. Your offensive coordinator is gone, after 1 failed year. You got some wide receivers maybe coming in ? How about a running game ? How about a quarterback ? How about an offensive line ? How about some tight ends ? How about a 11-year experienced head coach ? Reality is that despite the score in the game you put up, we were in that game and again this season, Florida is at Home. So, you run into here and blog that we lost by a wide margin in The SEC Championship Game. You are simply jealous that Florida has not been back to The SEC Championship Game since your GPOE graduated to the Denver Broncos with their great defense and no tough teams played.

___________________________________________________
That is an ABSOLUTE LIE. And, everyone allowed your post to go unanswered. Mark Richt is 3 wins and 11 losses in 14 games over 11 years vs teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 10. Mark Richt is 17 wins and 27 losses in 44 games over 11 years vs teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 25. Mark Richt also has 17 losses in 11 years vs teams not 1 of which end any of those seasons in the top 25 without their win over him.
___________________________________________________
Now, your LIES to the side, I do support the REASON FOR YOUR LIES that you want Mark Richt to get his contract EXTENSION. He gets it because he recruits well, is a good guy, and at some point either the light bulb will go off about hiring great assistant coaches, discipline like a man not a wimp, and to cease with his pass happy offense at the University of Ground Attack in The SEC where the top teams run the football – (1) it will either go off here (2) he will retire to Missionary Work and give up donating 3 and a half million dollars annually to his charities, or (3) he will go somewhere else where he 3 major weaknesses here, he will figure out what to do to be what we all want of the NICE GUY.

We could be WORSE OFF. Look at Florida. All that talent down there, and they CANNOT RECRUIT. Please do not lie about Mark Richt’s mediocre accomplishments. Give him the EXTENSION; do it now. Put a clause in the new contract about not losing to bad teams as he did not this season, and put a clause that says he gets a BONUS for BEATING THE TEAMS who end up Top 25 and Top 10, which is what he HAS NOT DONE.

“Faton Bauta……(compared to Tebow). I am not sure why this kid wants to go to Georgia to play QB……because he cannot pass the ball downfield with any accuracy at all….very weak arm. I do not see him playing QB in college.”
___________________________________________
Why does any kid want to go to college with Mark Richt, who is ranked by Rivals the # 13 Best Quarterback in the U.S. ? He has 4.5 speed in the 40-yard dash, is 6′ 3″ tall is 225 lbs and bench presses 325 lbs. That is a rare combination of size strength and speed. He is just off a 4-Star QB at 3.8 stars.

Let me ask you this ? How did Florida look this year when your QB got injured ? Ok, so we have Christian LeMay ahead of him and he is back-up. He offers a change of pace, unlike current quarterbacks Aaron Murray and Hutson Mason, who are both fairly similar with 1 guy clearly better.

I would not say that Mark Richt is looking for a # 1 stud quarterback in recruiting this season, but he always signs 1 every year anyway. Doesn’t he ? He has Aaron Murray for 2 more years after this season. He has Hutson Mason for 3 more years after this one, if he stays. He has Christian LeMay who has a great arm and great feet for 4 more years after this one. How do you get in a situation like this one ? You recruit players like these, one a year. How do you get in a situation like you were in this year at Florida at Quarterback ? Because you did NOT recruit players like these, one a year.

We are in fine shape in our recruiting and you SUCK at your recruiting with MAJOR HOLES ALL OVER YOUR ROSTER down there in your talent-rich state of Florida.

So, you run in here and proclaim that Reality Sucks that you are jealous that we played in The SEC Championship Game and you did NOT; and now that we have a wonderful situation at Quarterback (and at Running Back ALSO UNLIKE YOU) which you are also JEALOUS OF while you sit there telling us we should feel sorry for ourselves because we Lost The SEC Championship game slightly worse than you did at your 6-6 us at 10-3. “BRADENTON— — Dwyer quarterback Faton Bauta was the best player in the Panthers’ state semifinal game against Manatee.

For 47 minutes, he cut up the Manatee defense with power rushes and bullet throws. But on a fourth-quarter fourth down, with one minute and nine seconds remaining and his team’s season on the line, Bauta was not allowed on the field.

Backup quarterback Bobby Puyol came into the game and on fourth down and four to gain, he hit wide receiver Johnnie Dixon with a pass in the hands. It should have given the Panthers a new set of downs, but Dixon dropped the ball on the 17 yard line and Manatee (12-2) advanced to the Class 7A state final with its 19-14 win.

It was the second straight year Dwyer was ousted from the playoffs in the state semifinals. Last year the Panthers lost to Armwood 22-20 in Class 4A, a year after winning the title in 2009.”

The demotion of his buddy as S&C coach and hiring a old school “they don’t need any more water” type coach is not the way to go (a lot of schools have guys with doctorates in nutrition doing S&C).

The fact that in order to run the pro set I form, you MUST have top flight, 1-3 round type OL. He recruits good, but the OL seems to have been a problem since the start of his tenure.

I hope we win and win big with Richt, nothing personal. But what we can expect is continued ignorance of special teams, getting a 7 point lead and taking our foot off the gas, and if we get the ball with 3 minutes left in the half, buddy….we’re taking a knee and going to the locker room.

It’s wait and see mode, IMO…..FACT: we had zero marquee wins this year. That should scare you…unless you chest thump over Ole Miss wins.

I am among the majority of Dawg fans who appreciate you, not among the lunatic fringe who sit on this blog with nothing better to do than whine about mediocrity, blah, blah, blah. I for one remember clearly what the program suffered through in the post Dooley era up to Richt’s tenure.

I also appreciate that while you recognize the need for changes, that you do not make them in a frenzied, whirling dervish manner like these fringe fans would have you do. If we need a new OC, special teams coach, etc, nobody is in a better position to recognize that than you. I appreciate that you do not throw your reports under the bus at the first sign of adversity, that they get a chance to succeed or fail.

Hang in there CMR, Dawg nation remains behind you, and will happily support you for years and years, maybe decades…. All you fringe whiners, either get over it and join us, or take your tired ranting elsewhere. Or keep it on these blogs, where it remains as impotent as you hopefully are.

You are jealous. Not so much by our 10-4 to your 7-6 this season but by our stacked rack of Quarterbacks including Faton Bauta. And, because of our stacked rack of tailbacks including Keith Marshall.

No one said, or at least not I, that Florida would never again be good. What I merely point out is that Mark Richt does recruit and Florida down there in that state with all that talent there, does NOT.

BobDawg, I don’t think the bowl game is gonna be as easy as you think. MSU has a top-5 defense, which is sure to give Bobo and Murray trouble, and came within a couple of points of the Big Ten Title.

Not to mention we have won 1 game vs Top-20 teams in 4 years (Tech ‘09 and that hardly counts). We struggled mightily vs the three good teams we played this year, Boise and LSU.

And lastly, contrary to what a lot of UGA fans were writing before the SECCG, including myself, that the Bulldogs of late in the season were better than the Bulldogs of the first two games of the season, turned out to be wrong. In the second half of the LSU game, Murray, and the special teams looked as bad as they did in the first two games.

Richt obviously doesn’t need to beat MSU to keep the millions flowing, but he sure needs it to validate his team’s season.

You are right about that, Dawgs4Life.

That bunch of fringe fans wanted Willie Martinez gone after ‘06 when the points allowed started zooming up following Van Gorder’s leaving.

But Richt’s waiting, and even pandering to his college buddy cost him and UGA a couple of trips to the “Big Game” by allowing 30+ points over a dozen times as well as a few 40+ games in the ‘07 and ‘08 seasons, thereby wasting the enormous NFL talent we had on offense. Just think what Grantham’s Top-4 in the nation D could have done for those teams.

I’m not fretting about the Michigan State game. Michigan State has a lot more than just a top defense. Nick Saban disciple Mark Dantonio has it going on. He has an excellent quarterback, and his special teams are a lot better than ours as well. For several years now, they have beat teams finishing in the top 25, unlike us over the last 4 years. This season is SHOT. What I am looking at, is that we recruit. We have these openings on our scholarships. We have players coming in again. How many years can they show up here and NOT WIN vs the top teams ?

Look.

Mark Richt, if he doesn’t give up his 3 and a half million dollars total compensation annually which he donates to his charities and go on a Mission Trip the rest of his life, is going to figure this out.

If he doesn’t here, he will somewhere else.

It is too glaring to all of us.

So, if he is going to figure it all out and not make these same mistakes somewhere else, then I want his EXTENSION NOW, so he can make these corrections here.

I am not settling for his career of 3 wins out of 14 games vs teams finishing top 10, not settling for his career 17 wins out of 44 games vs teams finishing top 25, and I am certainly not settling for his 17 losses over these 11 years of his career to-date so far vs teams none of whom end up top 25 without their wins over Mark Richt.

What I am saying is that the kids love him. I have always liked him. I think he might figure this out. In the meantime, we have plenty to talk about with his top-drawer recruiting.

I extend the contract and put in clauses with bonuses in these areas where he has NOT BEEN WINNING.

ugab, actually we have commitments from 2 of the highest-rated punter and kicker we have ever have come here. It is unheard of that they are 3-Star recruits. Might want to check it out. I am not concerned about that on special teams. Special Teams concerns are this playing of walk-ons and not wanting to get front line players injured while we face other teams like LSU where the very best have a hard time making their special teams. We need to upgrade the staff somewhere. Can’t be Bryan McClendon, not with Keith Marshall he brought here with Mark Richt. So, look around and find a position coach to let go to bring in a Special Teams’ Coach. And, going to the NFL for an OC is going to work since if you give him the EXTENSION, he retains keeping his praying buddy as OC.

Minor tweaks here.

And, wake me up when we beat a team who finishes in the top 10. Settle for top 25.

I just want to beat the top teams, and you have to admit Mark Richt did not lose to a bad team this season. OK, the season is over and he didn’t beat anyone. Again. Same as last 4 entire seasons.

True.

I like Mark Richt.

The kids love Mark Richt.

I want to help Mark Richt.

Try to keep up now please.

Mark Richt is going to figure this out. If not here, somewhere else. He isn’t going to quit giving away nearly 4 million a year. This is his Calling. He is young.

If you are going to root for a team, it is great to have players to root for. Yes, a great experienced head coach who was tough and could be cold-hearted about his staff and players, would have done more with the avg # 7 recruiting class of the 12 years now he has recruited for us. It’s just unfortunate that his “goodness” spills over to his coaching. Too big-hearted to dismiss underproducing assistant. Too nice to beat-down another coach when he has them down (see Huston Nutt, Paul Johnson), when, if the situation was reversed, they would try to beat him by 50.

He has sucked McGarity into his web so he has nothing to worry about. Richt does not have an agent , he negotiates his own contract. That is important because Richt is more interested in getting an extension now that he is not on the hot seat than a raise but a raise usually comes with an extension so I’m sure that will be taken care of also.
It is more important that McGarity make’s Grantham an offer he can’t turn down and get him locked in for three additional years. I for one would like to see just how far Georgia can go with their defense. Now Grantham does have an agent and he won’t even talk extension without him present. Even though we got killed in the second half of the LSU game , the first half was the most dominate I have ever seen against a top five team ever. We shut them COMPLETLY down. As long as we thought we could beat LSU we were but the turnover’s changed that mind set because they were way too good and then their depth took over the game. I do want to see if we can get to that kind od dominance for an entire game.

ToddA,

Did you even watch the SECCG or are you one of those who saw the final score and read that whacked out headline on the AJC and assumed that the Dawgs just got trounced. Because if you had watched the game you would have known that the Dawgs actually dominated the LSU Tigers for all of the first half and with a few guys holding onto the ball the Dawgs would have been further ahead than 10-7 at the half. Also if the officials had called those CLEAR CUT clips on those 2 punt returns LSU would have been hard pressed to have gotten the momentum. But it is what it is and Georgia lost but LSU is not that much better than the Dawgs. And the Dawgs will only get better as some of those dream teamers mature a little more and assume starting and crucial back-up positions on a very talented team. Now only have to get more of the big ugglies to build depth on the OL and DL. But the future for next 2 years does look bright for Georgia.

The most important part of McGarity’s contract talks with Richt will be what will make Georgia better and expand on a great 2011. McGarity will take care of CMR next week and hopefully Grantham. The question is can a coaching change be made so that we will still be able to do as good at that position plus the new coach has got to have an excellent history with special team’s. It will be very interesting to see how our special team’s failures this year will be addressed. Georgia is not far from being a great SEC team again.
It all start’s in January with Strength and Conditioning . Georgia does not need to relax any on their S&C or their nutritional changes. These two thing’s made a huge difference in 2011 and if continued will have even more of an impact in 2012.
