Tech 68, UGA 56: What they were saying afterward

What coaches and players were saying after Georgia Tech’s 68-56 victory over Georgia  in Athens on Wednesday night:

Georgia Tech coach Brian Gregory:

“I was 10 years old when that [Tech's last win in Stegeman Coliseum] happened. I told our guys that on Monday. Now, there were some [years] in between we didn’t play down here. I didn’t tell them that, you know. I just wanted our guys to understand that one of the things that is unique and special about Georgia Tech is the great tradition we have. There’s a lot of great players who have worn that uniform and never won down here.  Part of our process in getting it back on track is doing some special things, and tonight was special. Our guys will be able to say they broke the streak,  and they will remember it forever. And I know the guys who wore the uniform before tonight, they’re proud of the way our guys played. Irregardless of whether we won or lost, we played the way Georgia Tech is supposed to play in terms of great toughness  and a lot of care for each other out on the court. Much better in the second half, I thought that was the difference.”

“We struggle on offense sometimes, we really do. And Mark [Fox] has done a great job with them defensively as well, and they struggle on offense. But what ended up happening … our defense created some offense, which then made our offense a little easier. That’s what happened in the second half. But we are getting better defensively, do a good job on the glass. As long as we continue to become more efficient on offense, we’ve got a chance to continue to improve. This is a marker in the process. It is not the end by any stretch. It doesn’t mean we’ve arrived. We’ve got a long way to go.  But it’s a pretty good marker to have.”

“Sometimes you need some tangible evidence that what you’re preaching every day and what you’re trying to drive home actually works. We had a good win versus VCU and some other good wins, but obviously this means more. We want to get to the point where every game is just as important as the other. But let’s face it, this game does have a little more meaning to it, a little more juice to it.”

Georgia Tech center Daniel Miller:

“Very special [win]. We made quite an accomplishment tonight that hasn’t been done in a very long time. Many great players have come in here and haven’t been able to do it.”

“We just played a little bit harder [in the second half] than in the first half, and it helped us a lot, defensively and offensively.”

Georgia coach Mark Fox:

“That was a very disappointing loss. We’re not a very good basketball team right now, and that’s my responsibility. Our defense collapsed on us in the second half, but you have to give Georgia Tech credit. Their defense in the second half was better than our offense. That was just a disappointing loss.”

“Our interior play is very poor right now. We’re not getting any interior scoring, and so we’re settling for outside shots, and that is an issue with our team right now.”

“We’re going to get better, but it’s going to take time. You can’t teach guys how to score over night, but our defense? I’m angry about that.”

Georgia guard Gerald Robinson:

“It’s our goal to come out with a sense of urgency in the second half. We didn’t do that tonight. We’re just not there yet, and we have to saddle up. We’re not doomed by any means. We can still have a good season. We’re just going to keep playing.”

Georgia has a great deal of youth and inexperience. Lost our two top scorers from last season plus two big men down low. Losing Thompkins and Leslie is a big deal. Don’t sell those losses short. Mark Fox has done an outstanding job since coming to Georgia. He will need to build some depth and needs a true big man in the middle. Patience will be rewarded in Athens.

BufordTDawg….. why say no one cares? Apparently YOU do by either attending or watching the game on TV (like I did). This would imply one cares. It makes no sense to downplay loosing, especially when the team played very poorly.

Is it just me or does anyone else notice that all Fox teams, more times than not, have loooong cold streaks in games? Not holding onto leads by going into a 10 minute scoring comas makes it very hard to beat anyone.

DMR, love that you are drinking the Kool-Aid.

This game marked the beginning of the end of the Mark Fox era. You are at home, GTU is not that good…. and you lose BADLY. Yet another 2nd half collapse. AGAIN!!! This is Fox’s 3rd season. They will be lucky to win 3 conference games this season. Next season, with more 3 stars coming in, what is the ceiling, 6 games??? So after 4 seasons, you win 6 SEC games?
I hope I am wrong, but I do not see the recruiting and I see continual 2nd half collapses. Mark Fox has won the PR job with the fan base and supporters. Maybe he should work in administration because he is lacking something as a coach.

Don’t know anything about Tech’s team. Georgia lost it’s four best players from last year, and they are showing the gap in recruiting from the year between the Felton to Fox transition. Given that we only meet once a year, it is unfortunate that there is no more interest in the game. Maybe this victory will be the start of an upswing in interest. collegeballfan

“When they played Tech-Georgia in the Omni it was always sold out!”

Correct. But that was Cremins vs Durham. Two Final 4 coaches going at it. Wonderful basketball.

And then Dooley made his biggest mistake. Durham wanted the game in the Omni every year so he could bring in a couple dozen inter-city players in as a recruiting effort. Dooley wanted the game in Athens when Georgia was the home team. Durham publicly said that moving the game from the Omni to Athens would be abandoning Atlanta as a recruiting area. Dooley, the Athletic Director, won the argument.

And Georgia has not been a major presence in Atlanta recruiting since.

Just another major obstacle Fox must overcome to build a basketball team at UGA.

Big win for a rebuilding Jacket team. Nice job Gregory.

Now if both coaches and end the “one and done” mentality prevalent in college basketball today.

Fair and Balanced:

You have to take into account who we’ve lost: Travis Leslie, Trey Thompkins, Chris Barnes, and Jeremy Price. That leaves a HUGE gap in our lineup. Freshman and Sophomores are getting most of the minutes now and Robinson can’t create like he did last year because he doesn’t have that talent around him. We’re YOUNG, and Fox has been up-front about that since the start of practice.

Congrats to the GT team for breaking the streak. From what I saw, both teams will be .500- MAYBE -this year.UGA I understand since the personnel losses from last year’s team were considerable-from a scoring and rebounding POV.Not as sure about Tech, but Rice is a very good player.Gregory looks like a winner, but Tech fans will still need to be patient and give him the time to assemble his players. You never know how a team will react to a new coach, but give the man time.
For the Bulldog fans who show their ignorance of basketball, Fox IS a winner and the same patience will be required-especially this year. One can argue last year’s success was with Felton’s players-but, Fox obviously got a lot more out of them than Felton. This year’s team simply doesn’t have the bulk needed in the frontcourt-and the guys we have are inexperienced.
It’s gonna be a long year for both teams,I suspect.

Coach Fox: Please give up the zone and go man on defense. You have exceptional ballplayers … but zone defense develops laziness, standing around watching the ball rather than watcing the man. You are getting beat by other good teams because the half time break gives time to them to figure it out how to beat it and UGA. Stop ZONE; go MAN. More exciting for our plyers with this challenge and higher chance to maintain first half success.

With two football games at the Dome this year, I have an idea. When we do not play Tech at Tech in football, have an annual game at the Dome. It could help with recruiting in ATL. UGA has the right coach. He is a winner and he will correct things. This team plays with no heart. I have not seen a player step in a take a charge. In the Tech game I have never seen so many uncontested layups. UGA looked like an AAU team. It will take Coach Fox a time to correct some attitudes or they will be gone. And I really like the enthusiasm that Coach Gregory brings to Tech. I believe Tech has a good one there also.

For JB

December 8th, 2011
11:35 am

Anytime you lose it is certainly disappointing. I give Georgia a lot of credit, they have a good football team and they showed up and played very well. For us the margin of error was small and we didn’t take advantage of a couple of opportunities that we had early. When we did that we got behind and we could never claw ourselves back into the game. We had a hard time of that. Third quarter we kind of self-destructed offensively the way we were turning the ball over. Like I said, I give them credit. They came in here and did what they had to do and played hard.”

Obviously the loss of Leslie and Thompkins to the NBA – wonder how they’ve been feeling about their decision to come out early with all the mess with the NBA lockout, et. al.? – has taken it’s toll on the team and it will mean one or two more recruiting classes to get the talent. Hopefully, the kids will be able to see beyond the current performance – and fan attendance – and see what can be done here. As for Tech, one win in Athens in Bball in 35 years and you’re strutting around like world-beaters. Fact is the story of this one was ‘one team was sorry and the other one was glad of it’.

Congrats to the Jackets. Your team was better prepared and better game day coached than the Dawgs. The Dawgs look like a backyard pick up bunch with no plan and no execution. The Jackets are organized and efficient at what they do. Neither team has enough talent to make the tournament but at least Tech is improving and has a plan. The Dawgs have neither IMO.

I couldn’t help but thinking that Mark Fox was probably wishing he hadn’t told Daniel Miller to go away. I’m no fan of Hewitt, but grabbing Miller was one of his best decisions in recent years. And this kid grew up bleeding red and black. I see Miller growing into a solid player. I wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes one of the dominant ACC big men, in the next few years.

I find it sad that UGA’s basketball program is so weak that their fans did not even show up at the game. They can’t even fill that cow barn of an arena, and they have no fan base for basketball. Gloating that Tech has not won there since the 1970s is misleading as they only renewed the series in Athens in about 1995. Oh, and they have only won a couple of times at Tech since the 1990s so there is not much to gloat about. Funny, when they win they care, when they lose, they act like they don’t even have a program. That is what happens when most of your fan base never even went to college. Very Funny. Go Jackets!

I went to the game. I am not exaggerating when I say this: I have seen a couple of High School teams in my life who could beat UGA right now. Before you laugh, think about it. I saw the 4 time state champion Westover team. Dontonio Wingfield plays one year at Cincinnati and then goes to the NBA. Think any of our post guys are anywhere near that? (They had 3 or 4 other guys go IA too I think.) Louis Williams at South Gwinnett goes straight to the NBA. Think Dwight Howard’s team (even though they were Class A) doesn’t give UGA fits? Our guards wouldn’t even get the ball up the floor on Berkmar’s press a few years ago.
The talent level of this team is every bit as bad as it was when Dennis Felton was recruiting guys at the Ramsey Center. We’re looking at a 3-13 SEC record…….maybe.

The one and done mentality that someone mentioned earlier hurts college basketball.
Coaches go after these top flight recruits knowing they will more than likely bolt, but it’s next to impossible to recruit suitable replacement players at the same position because the top tier talent isn’t going to want to split time in their freshman seasons.
Talk about your double edged swords.

On to the game: Tech was better, a LOT better, when it counted. Georgia has no inside game and jumpers ain’t gonna fall consistently enough for any team, let alone the Bulldogs. Be patient with Fox; despite having a poor shooting game last night, that Caldwell-Pope kid will be a player. Get him some complementary pieces and you’ll do okay for yourselves.

Yes, GT HAD not won in basketball in Athens since 76. Casual observers to that statement might look at that and assume UGA has dominated GT in basketball since this time. Upon further review, here are the facts.

Record of GT vs UGA in Bball since 76
GT 14 – UGA 16
Record at the Omni/Dome/Phillips –
GT 8-UGA 6
Record after going back to home n home (including this year)
GT 7 – UGA 9

Pretty even series and not what most would assume.

It’s just a shame that the arena was so empty. Drove to Athens — bought a ticket for $5 and found a seat on the third row. When the state’s top 2 universities meet in basketball and there are about 5,000 people there — it says a lot for basketball in this state. In the 80’s when both schools had top teams – you couldn’t get a ticket to this. Now both teams are struggling and no one cares. That is a shame for basketball fans

Mark, Georgia will come on in roundball. We lost a ton of talent. I was around “back in the day” and, true, the game would sell out the Omni. It will happen again. We are in a football state, but Fox will get us back on the map. I remember when Hugh Durham let us hit the floor so we could yell for the Dogs (and perhaps raz the opponents!) I remember Eric “Skydog” Marbury, Lavon Mercer, Lucious Foster, etc. I also remember (after I got out) the final four crew of Lamar Heard, V. Fleming, Terry Fair, James Banks, etc. We will get there and farther, I believe. I also remember (speaking of the Tech game) Sammy Drummer, Brooke Steppe and Tico Brown, to name a few! We need to get the UGA/Tech b-ball game back to the fun it once was. These two coaches will build their respective programs and make our state a good roundball place!

Wrong. The game was moved to home and home because the Omni was torn down and Phillips Arena was being built. When the game was played in the Omni, Georgia (and Tech) were on the quarter system. Students got out of school for the holidays at Thanksgiving. An early December tip- off meant there were no students in Athens for the game — like they come anyway.

Now that Georgia is on the semester system the students are in town for the game.

However, like yourself I’d rather see it go down in Phillips. I agree that it is a great recruiting event for both schools.

I had predicted Coach Fox would win only 2 SEC games this year. I think I’ll be on track for that.

But he’s still a solid coach. 2 things are hindering us right now:

1) Nobody can lose two draft players early, + 2 very solid bigs to graduation, and not have a major downturn – See Billy Donovan’s Gators a few years ago for an example. That coupled with…

2) His first year recruiting was shot. We lost Daniel Miller to Yech when Felton was fired. UGA gave him his release, and he bolted. I say if Miller was on our team last nite, the game would have been about equal. Mayfield left. All we have is Vincent Williams from that class, who’s playing well.

Fox is recruiting well for his system. He’s getting a bunch of 4-5 year guys, except for Pope, who’s probably gone after his So. year. So he’s realistically only had 2 years to recruit the guys on the team. And he has hit the JUCO ranks with Brantley and Floveus.

We’ll be fine. Solid class this year. Great class really last year. Hunt, Williams are going to be very good SEC players, but they are true Sophmores right now. Nemanja, Pope, Dixon are all going to be solid to great SEC players. Fox is building a program. I hope we give him enough time to do it. We beat Notre Dame, who’s pretty good every year, but even they have down years. Should’ve beat Colorado on the road also.

And about Tech, they are going to be very good for a few years. No Srs. contributing much, so Mfon, Rice, Morris, Julian (who should be at UGA), Miller (same), are just Sophmores and Juniors. I think Tech gets to the NIT or low level NCAA this season

Then next season, with everybody of importance back, and a great recruiting class, they are going to have a great team. Watch and see. Hewitt just couldn’t coach.

Back to Fox – He’s building a program. Give him some space.

SteveW

December 9th, 2011
12:45 am

Next season we have Dixon, Williams, Cannon, Floveus, Nemanja all returning at the 4 and 5 spot.

Hunt can go to his natural position at the 3, and we have a very good Fr. SF coming in.

Pope, Senior Vincent Williams, who’s been playing lights out lately, pleasant surprise, and Senior Brantley all return, along with 2 very highly regarded G’s.

We’ll be some better next season, probably 15-15 or something like that. But Fox will still be building. We lose Robinson, Nolte, and Ware, but we’ll be alot stronger, alot more experienced, and you’ll begin to see the program really take shape. Fox is building a perennial powerhouse here. But give him time. Felton was going backwards after what, 7 years? That’s the reason he was released.

But Fox is recruiting solid guys. 4-5 year guys primarily. That’s how Xavier, Butler and those guys do it. Smart on our level.

It really is our inside game killing us right now. Too young and inexperienced.

Williams a skinny true Sophmore, who’s a natural PF, playing C. 220 lbs

Marcus Thornton, a chiseled true Soph., a natural SF having to play PF.

Floveus – JUCO transfer who’s decent, but still only 6-10 230

And then Dixon, who looks like he’s going to be really good – a true Fr. a skinny 6-9, and Cannon, who also should be good in time, 6-10. He really should be redshirted. UNC wanted him.

Then Nemanja, who has surprised me – he’s a F 6-8 235, but plays more outside – very good shooter – and of course he’s only a true Fr. as well.

Just saw on DraftExpress Pope is the 14th best Fr. in the country so far this year. Next year, maybe even later on this season, the young man is going to be a beast. He looks like a mid-level pro prospect type to me. He can be good, way better than Travis Leslie good. Not quite as athletic, but a natural BB player.

Why is it that when Tech wins a game in ANYTHING every blue moon they come on our blog and talk about the sudden demise of whatever Georgia sport in which they took a rare win. Tech fans need to stay on their own boards and talk about their wins and losses – losses being the MUCH more frequent. UGA has competitive and national championship programs in MANY sports. Some of you UGA “fans” are crazy if you think the only sport we care about is football – we have won national championships in golf, equestrian, women’s gymnastics, etc MANY times since we last won a NC in football. Our athletics department is well rounded and SUCCESSFUL. We own one of the top brands in college football as well and are one of the top football programs in the country in terms of consistently operating in the black. We have NOTHING – NADA – to apologize for. You Tech fans are just pathetic to come over here and brag about anything – I still do not approve of this cross board trash talking – but, there are times I see WHY some of the UGA fans migrate to the Tech boards to talk trash on their boards – if you are going to come over here and do it you may expect the same. You can talk this crap on your own boards as easily as here – what’s that? There isn’t anybody on your board talking about your programs? Oh well – sad state of affairs for you guys. GO DAWGS! BEAT MICHIGAN STATE!
