UGA president predicts extended tenure for football coach Mark Richt

ATHENS – University of Georgia President Michael Adams isn’t generally known for his sense of humor. But he can provide an unexpected “zinger” on a moments notice.

Asked at his monthly cabinet meeting on Thursday about the contract status of head football Mark Richt, Adams said, “If we win Saturday he’ll be back and if we lose we’re going to fire him.”

He was joking, of course.

Richt has 2 ½ years remaining on a contract that pays him close to $3 million annually. There were questions about his long-term future as the Bulldogs’ coach when the team followed last year’s 6-7 record with an 0-2 start this season.

But Georgia has since won 10 games a row and clinched the SEC Eastern Division Championship. The 14th-ranked Bulldogs (10-2, 7-1 SEC) play No. 1-ranked LSU (12-0, 8-0) in the SEC Championship on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Now that he has led the Bulldogs to their fourth SEC Championship game and seventh season of 10 or more wins in 11 seasons as Georgia’s coach, a contract extension for Richt seems imminent and in the very near future. The contact period for recruiting began on this week and UGA administrators aren’t likely to send Richt out on the road with a contract of fewer than four or five years.

Adams said he’s now hearing from fans who want UGA to hurry up and extend Richt as soon as possible.

“I get amused at this sometimes, frankly,” Adams said. “I actually have had suggestions from some of the same people over the last four months that, after the 0-2 start, were asking the AD and me to terminate him, who are now upset that we haven’t renewed the contract.

“So you don’t respond to these things emotionally through the season. You try and get a couple or three weeks away from a season. Give us a little time to review the whole process, but I would be surprised if Mark Richt weren’t the coach here next year. We’ll just wait and see what the AD decides to do.”

Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity, who will ultimately make the call on the matter, maintained his stance Thursday that he would not address Richt’s contract status until after Saturday’s SEC Championship.

Atention Greg McGarity….Keith Marshall is the # 1prospect and need for the Dawgs in this recruting class. Mr. Marshall will be making his final college decision on December 6th. Please extend CMR’s contract so Mr. Marshall knows he can commit to a coach that will be in the system for the span of his college career.

If you do not extend CMR’s (and Grantham for that matter) contract ASAP then you are hurting the recruting chances at UGA be prolonging the questions about CMR’s future at UGA.

Also, please tell Michael Adam’s to hold the jokes. He shouldnt make comments like he did in his cabinet meeting whether they are jokes or not.

Mark Richt deserved the opportunity prior the season began, and he deserves to continue what has evolved in the past 11 years.

If not for the televised media, not naming names, UGA should be in position to play for its third National Championship in the past 11 years. At least when football is played on the field, you can play your way (not vote your way) into the opportunity. UGA has guaranteed itself a shot at the National Championship in 2011, better known as the SEC championship, greatest conference in America

Let’s hold up on the extended contract and pay raise for a little while. While CMR may be the finest man to ever coach UGA football, he certainly is not Saban caliber. We have the largest offensive line in football, but are unable to give Murray 3 seconds to throw the ball, or push the defensive line for an up the middle for a 3 yard gain. UGA football players have the best talent in the SEC, so why are we not No. 1 in the BCS? The answer is simple. They have not been coached up to their potential. The worst possible comment for any person is “they had so much potential”. Lets look for improvement in CMR in his coaching abilities instead of giving him a raise and long term contract. Go Dawgs.

Like most UGA football fans, I’m enjoying the 10 wins this season. IMO Richt has more character and integrity than most of his opponents. He is in a profession and an environment that places high value (money) on the size of your trophy case and the number of championships you have won.

Would hate to see Richt compromise his principles and the way he conducts his life. Can he be successful and win national championships without compromising? I think so…his profession and the young men he’s responsible for need leaders like him.
I hope problems, during the prior three seasons, have become a great learning experience making Richt wiser and the rest of us more patience. While contract extensions will help recuiting, the time and discussions needed are more important.

The ten wins in a row means nothing to me honestly, each game UGA played they were supposed to beat each and everyone of those teams and they did. This team is still largely unproven as well as the coaching. Look at the LSU game as a measuring stick to how much this team has really improved from last year. Bob, I think Richt thanks God every day for all of his circumstances, but really let’s look at it. Record is critically important, but recruiting, his own character and the character he builds in his staff and the players, grad rates, stability, profitability of the program–there are a lot of factors you can evaluate coaches on, and Richt does a great job at most of them. Take a look at the problems many schools have and he really shines.

To the “kool aid krowd”. Mark Richt hasn’t “earned” an extension, he’s merely done his job “this year”. With the competition we’ve played, and the results some could say we’ve underachieved, but I won’t. Personally I want to see how badly Mark Richt wants to be at Georgia. He’s still got two plus years on his contract. I want to see hungry Dawgs. As a coach Mark Richt has lived the “fat cat” life the last few years. Little effort and little results. Despite winning ten games in a row the Dawgs still don’t have a signature win over a decent team this season. That’s not Richt’s fault but really where is the trademark win to hang a hat on this season ? Was it the terrible 5-7 Tennessee Volunteers ? Was it the worst Florida team since the merger who finished 6-6 ? Oh, I know it must have been offensively challenged 7-5 Auburn or the 8-4 ACC Tech StumbleBees. None of the other mediocre opponents the Dawgs beat are not worth mentioning. Wait a minute, I know the Dawgs will face the Mighty No.1 LSU Tigers in the SECCG. And because of politics and money the SEC has $17 million reasons to see UG hoist the SEC trophy and travel to the NOLA for the Sugar Bowl. So it won’t be an upset if UG beats LSU and the Tigers STILL play Bama for the National Championship, it will be an SEC exhibition of its complete BCS aided domination of the NCAA and College football in America in 2011-12. The system really, really sucks and a playoff is needed ASAP! When the SEC roars and flexes its muscle the other conferences, particularly the Big XII, tremble.

Getting back on point, Richt’s team played a weak schedule. They lost to the only two decent teams they faced and won ten games in a row over an assortment of cupcakes, conference frogs, and has-beens. For the 10-2 season finish Richt deserves at the most a one year extension. Let’s see how improving UG fares next season against stiffer competion before they extend him to a long term contract they may regret later. The running back situation has been unstable for the past two seasons heading into next season and that’s another reason not to over-extend Richt. In other words I’m still not convinced and refuse to drink the delusionalist’s kool-aid. Go Dawgs & L.M. rest in peace.

It really is bigger than the record over a couple of years. You have to look at recruiting quality, where the program is headed and a number of other factors. All teams have issues that come up and they have slumps. Some coaches just leave and start over at a new shcool. How many of you feel positive about UGA’s chances next year? If we can find a good line, I think we will be a top ten team. Is it the year for the NC? I don’t know, but you have to like our trajectory as a football program.

It is a long time until next year. Still two pretty big games left on UGA’s schedule. The only unit that I feel will be solid is the defense. The offense will depend on if UGA can find a new offensive line. The talent appears to be there on the offense but if you can not block then it won’t matter. Not to mention the teams that were down last year are going to get better next year in the SEC. The season starts next August so ask again in the fall when UGA beats some quality opponents.

There may be some truth in what you say, but I wouldn’t accept that alone as a reason for a contract extension. Coach Richt’s current contract has not run out. There is no rush to change his employment status whatsoever. Times are hard. There aren’t a lot of people getting raises lately.

Bad Dawg and Mobile Dawg both make valid points. It’s exciting to be in the midst of a win streak, but that excitement shouldn’t cloud one’s judgment. People in Alabama loved Mike Shula in 2005 when he won 10 games and ended the season in the Top 10, but they fired him at the end of the 2006 season. Coaches don’t get on “hot-seats” for no good reason.

Besides, if a kid wants to play for Coach Richt, he’s not gonna check the details of Mark’s contract with the University before he decides. I’d negotiate next year, if it was my choice.

UGA used to want to win championships every year now fans are satisfied with beating Georgia Tech, we should expect to beat Georgia Tech. Look at this season, UGA wins 10 games and dawg fans on here all hyped up. If you look at the schedule it is not that impressive and is why UGA is ranked where they are in the BCS. I do not care about winning season or statistics. Championships should be the standard here at UGA and I am not talking about the one’s in August or on National Signing Day. The question is whether or not Mark Richt is a championship coach? I am not sure but he has a few more years to prove if he is worthy to take UGA where it hasn’t been since 1981.

However, I do know that this profession, like all others, has attracted more than its share of people who seem to lack basic integrity. Richt seems to me to be different. I admire the man and am tired of seeing him trashed on these blogs and in the media while examples of loyalty like Petrino and Meyer are celebrated. Seems like a lot of what is wrong.

I can speak for scheduling and I can assure you NO conference school will be able to “lobby” to get any opponent on or off the schedule. In fact, it is just the opposite. That decsion will be made by SEC management and all parties understand there will be shared sacrifice and some unexpected expenses relative to travel and other changing logistics.

To believe otherwise is ludicrous. If it were that simple every conference member would be trying to get Ole Miss and Miss. State, KY, UT etc. on their schedule for next year, given the state of flux those programs are in and/or may be in. No conference member is or ever has been able to dictate their schedule to the conference.

Some teams will also lose a home game because the conference is not going to require Texas A&M and Missouri to travel all over the south just to join the conference. Teams that lose a home date not only lose revenue they pick up added travel expense.

In the long run all of this is worth it but none of it will be free. Everyone knew going in that this would be a necessity. The schedule discussion is a red herring. Nobody in the SEC has an easy schedule. Nobody gets a free ticket to win the SECCG. You have to get by your division and several teams from the other half, and you always have to beat the other division’s champ. There is no way to sneak in to the number 1 spot in the nation’s toughest conference. Whether they play Alabama as scheduled, who knows. It doesn’t matter. If UGA is going to win the SEC, they have to beat the west champ. If Bama is great, UGA will face them if they win the East.

CHDawg, Even if GT is ranked higher than UGA its not really an upset when Mark Richt has won 10/11. Sort of like in the early 2000’s when Florida always beat UGA even though they were ranked higher and had the better team. Florida just kind of knows how to beat UGA (18/22) Even if UGA is ranked higher they still expect to win and the same can be said for GT. I really can not think of the last time UGA upset somebody, I guess because UGA is not usually an underdog but I could be wrong there. They have a shot this Saturday it could be an interesting game.

I think he made a statement when CMB gave him the ball 9 times in a row at the end of the game with the whole GT team in the box. Not that he is necessarily number one, but I think they see how strong he is. I think he needs another year in the weight room before he really starts to dominate. I’m not trying to offend the delusional part of the spirited UG fanbase, but the Dawgs didn’t do anything special by going 10-0 after an 0-2 start. The Dawgs merely did what they were supposed to do after a rough start. However it still was disappointing to see UG lose to the only highly ranked opponents on the schedule. UG was simply better than the ten mediocre teams they beat during the win streak and you would have to be somewhat delusional to go overboard in celebration of those wins. Toothless UF, Terrible Tennessee, and Awful Auburn were big wins in the SEC standings but each were putrid this year by their own high standards.

In other words there is still much work to do and two games against respectable competition remain. Richt has a chance to compete and go 2-2 in big games this year. I can’t wait to see how the Dawgs will respond against a superior opponent in LSU. UG is 0-2 this year versus highly ranked opponents. Will LSU make it 0-3 and if we lose how will UG fare in a bowl game this year. Another bowl loss to an inferior opponent will cause another offseason of improvement urgency. Truly because of the false expectations created by ten victories over mediocre opponents UG will be regarded as good as its last game. I wish Richt the best, but before he is over-extended let’s let the season play out and see how the Dawgs finish. Remember my delusional friends, The University of Georgia’s commitment to achievement and over all success in sports is bigger than the personal desires of any single individual within or outside the program even CMR. If he can meet UG expectations and get the job done good, get the extension done, and if he can’t the University is charged to find someone else and give them an opportunity to meet expectations. We see this at Penn St., Texas A&M, Arizona State, Illinois, UCLA, Ole Miss, UAB, and FAU. It’s no different at UG. Good Luck CMR and Go Dawgs !!

I respect your opinion dawgster, but I don’t think I’ve been negative. I think you’re extremely opinionated toward your feelings, cause, but that doesn’t make you right. I’m simply stating that I don’t believe Mark Richt has done what’s best for the UGA Football program over the last few years and one year with 10 wins over suspect teams doesn’t deserve an extension.

Defending myself, I’ve stated many times I think Richt along with McGarity (teamwork) are moving in the right direction. I state both the positive and the negative. For the record, I’ve called Richt out, but never “stated” he should be fired. Inversly proportional to your feelings I get extremly agitated when I see the blind support for Mark Richt when the “absolute” facts point out that this program under Richts “lack of leadership” sank to the lows we saw last year. That wasn’t a cycle, that was poor management. You’re welcome to disagree, no problem, no offense taken. And thanks for being a Dawg, it’s been great over the years, win or lose. We’re all passionate, sometimes we just don’t agree.

Whats your point Flat Tire”…How many teams around the nation have played for a National Championship either…Still some very, very good programs out there that havent…And yes Bama and LSU have fine programs a notch above others right now, no one will deny that…So what would you have us do quit trying or give up…As I said, sometimes the breaks have to fall your way, plus you have to be good….It seems that many believe you are not successful if you don’t play for a National Championship..tell that to these players that work there tail off all year preparing for the football season…Tell this to this years dawg team that haven’t been successful…No we won’t be playing for the BCS title this year, but if you can’t be proud of this team, then you are not a fan….go dawgs

Why do we have to beat the same dead horse over and over? I don’t know why people keep throwing up MNC’s. We’ve had a couple of chances, maybe three under Richt where we were, or could have been in position but we lost a game we should have won, luck went against us, we had injuries, etc. The bottom line is beginning in 2006 IMO this team started to disintegrate. Even though we had decent records in 07, 08, we still showed signs of a team with no leadership, no discipline, no defense. Why not hold Mark Richt accountable? It’s like some of you have an agenda.

A friend sent me an article, the excerpt follows”Here are the names of the individuals that BWI has been told are at the top of the list to be interviewed.

That list includes: Chris Peterson [Boise State], David Shaw [Stanford], Tim Murphy [Harvard], Darren Perry, Gary Patterson [TCU], James Franklin [Vanderbilt], Mike London [Virginia], Pat Fitzgerald [Northwestern] and possibly Mark Richt [Georgia] and Dan Mullen [Mississippi State].

BWI has been told, Peterson, Shaw, Perry and Murphy have serious interest in the job and appear to want to be interviewed. At this time it is not known what Penn State’s interest level is for Richt, Patterson. Franklin, London and Mullen.

BWI has been told Richt first got in contact with Penn State 10 days to two weeks ago, but BWI does not know where those talks stand.”

You CMR detractors may get your wish. Then please tell me your short list of coaches that are better than CMR and will come to UGA? It’s speculation, I know, just curious.

Flat Tire on I-95 in Jacksonville – Did you happen to notice CMR’s demeanor during the last few years that Damon and Adams were in RIcht’s business? I thought he looked depressed on the sidelines and was just not happy and into the job. I think McGarity is the right person to invigorate CMR, again. Get CMR down in the trenches with the players where he is an exceptional coach. I think McGarity is letting Richt do his thing now, and it seems to me that the UGA program is starting to shine again. The players really seem to be playing like a team.

Adams brought his friend Harrick to UGA and admitted Tony Cole with his presidential wavier. He winked at some of Harrick’s shady activities as long as Harrick won basketball games.. When the Adams-built house of cards crashed, Adams hung his old friend out to dry and pulled the team from the SEC tournament to cover his own butt. Adams is a snake who will cut Richt’s throat if it is politically expedient. Mike is probably planning another junket for his supporters in the Georgia Legislature for what is sure to be a pretty good bowl game.. His pals lost interest over the past couple of years, and so did Mike.

If you people learned how to read you would see my point

Again

People come on here saying Richt deserves a contract extension. No he doesnt. He has 2 yrs left on the one he has now

Richt isnt going to another UGA level school. No one has called his name, nor is he going anywhere that has the resource UGA has. Only USC, Texas, FL, Ohio St, Notre Dame, have the resources like UGA does. You would have to be a complete idiot to leave for something less

This was an easy schedule that has yet to prove how good we really are until Sat and until the bowl game

I’ll be the first to say if we keep it within 10 against LSUwin or lose and win our bowl game. Then I will say yes we are heading in the right direction and things are looking good. And if we do what we should do next year with our talent i.e win 11 games and beat FL, AGAIN. Then I will say lets give Richt an extension

But please give me a break, these last 10 games have been against lousy teams and people are demanding a contract extension. Boy lets hope we dont get beat like Arkansas did and lose our bowl game. Reality will set in.

dawgster, when you’re posting to me about MNC’s you’re barking up the wrong tree, pardon the pun. There are a lot of posters who use the MNC as a measuring stick. I’ve never said that, all I want is consistency, win or lose, a good effort. With good coaching, good preparation, good recruiting you should win your share. Dawgs shouldn’t be blown out of games regularly to our top opponents, i.e. bama, uf, ut, when these games were truly significant.

I don’t make the decison on hiring and firing, I’ve never suggested Richt be fired. I have offered my opinion to others as to who might be a candidate to replace him should that have become necessary. Richt has earned, which is good, the right to come back another year. I just don’t think he’s “earned” the extension yet. Another poster pointed out the Mike Shula debacle, I just say give it another year. Just fyi, I think McGarity gives the extension, just don’t agree with it, at this point. Agree, let’s move on.

@Mobile Dawg again..Coach Richt has been held accountable…and the defensive concerns were addressed along with the S&C program….Again good leaders make adjustments along the way…Now should some of this been addressed sooner, perhaps, but its not like we were terrible..but we didn’t perform up to georgia standards…and yeah 6-7 is probably terrible, so I’ll give you that…Unfortunately many think that the dawgs have never had rough stretches…well I can vouch that we have…all teams go thru this at some point, and yes Bama and LSU will at some point too…When I don’t know but there will be a time, for whatever reason, maybe key injuries, attrition, leaving early for the pros or changing coaches or coaches retiring or moving on….But please don’t say that Coach Richt needs to be held accountable…He knows that just as the players, administration and everyone involved with the program knows…One thing I do know is this man works extremely hard for this program and always had…Did we get complacent with our program, I don’t know, perhaps, but thats history, lets move forward and see how things go…I’m very satisfied with the results this year and believe we are close to achieving the ultimate goal that seems to be the only thing that will satisfy some…go dawgs…I’m done for the night, don’t mean anything disrespectful to anyone, but I know what kind of effort goes in preparing for the football season not only as players but with the coaching staff also….

Coach Richt has not won a national championship in his tenure as coach of the Dogs, I think he finished second in what 2007?, What are the odds of his achieving this in the next five years? Not so good I would say, Are we to be content with a top ten finish each season?, Or for that matter a winning season Lets face facts, While playing in the SEC is exciting its also tough to win, Teams like Auburn, Fla, Ala, LSU, Tenn and now South Carolina are difficult to beat on a consistant basis, Recruiting in our on state has become a challenge with every team in the SEC competing for the top players, With all this pressure does Coach Richt really want five more years?.

What I mentioned above and you call me a negative thinker, give me a break those are facts that in the real world of business would get you fired years ago

“And I want UGA to fail”,
you must be 3rd grade reading level if thats how you comprehend what I wrote, because Im tired of watching mediocrity on the field and yet UGA ranks 4th since 1999 in putting players in the NFL and we get the results that we have gotten

Obviously you want UGA to fail with your attitude or
You must drink a gallon of Kathryn’s kyptonite kool-aid

I dont know I guess we should ask

USC when they hired Pete Carrol
FL when they Spurrier or Meyer take your pick
AL and LSU when they hired Saban
Ohio State when they hired Tressel
AUB when they hired no-name Chizik
TCU when they hired Gary Patterson
Texas when they hired Mack Brown

Those are just a few programs that made coaching changes and you see the results

I didnt say fire Richt now but if the above of what I wrote continues he’s got to go and continuing to lose to FL especially this year with another new coach give me a break.

UG led by Richt, has got to move the program to the next level. I remember the halcyon fall days of 1980, 1981, and 1982 when there was a reign of Red and Black Terror in College football. The Dawgs ruled and dominated the South and SEC with an Iron fist. Back then it was never a question of whether the Dawgs would win the meager SEC title. The question was who would face and try to stop Georgia in the Sugar Bowl in the national title game. Everytime during the 80-82 championship run, Larry Munson would declare,” It’s raining Sugar” ! , after the Dawgs wrapped up another SEC title. It’s been almost thirty years since UG played on a dominant, superior level. It was great to watch the Dawgs led by Herschel pound the SEC into submission, while Munson called the play by play. We will never see that kind of domination again at UG, but the current Dawgs can improve and move the program past just being happy with ten mediocre wins or just happy to make the SECCG as the underdog. UG are the underdogs this time around, but if Richt can shed the underachieving, and poor coaching labels the Dawgs can return to glory and compete for at least one National Championship before he leaves. Everyone always wants to talk about the four SECCG appearances by the Dawgs under Richt. I call these UG fans the Neo-Dawgs or fans who weren’t born yet during the Herschel Walker-UG Championship era. I think the delusional base consists of them and they have suffered through the UF domination, low expectations and sub-par coaching . The Retro-Dawgs know the true Dooley-led UG domination of UF and are not just satisfied with just making it to the Ga.Dome for the SECCG.They are starving for a national title and haven’t been fed in over 30 years. So I can see the divisions in the UG fanbase. I am pulling for Georgia on Saturday as I have for over 35 years and though I do not always agree with Richt’s methods, I wish him the best and hope he succeeds. I have been sharply critical because I am a Georgia Bulldog fan, not a delusional personal fan of any individual. Richt did what he was supposed to do and deserves the credit. Ten layups where tossed to him and not only did he make them all, he slammed a few. I can’t find any fault on his behalf for that, but I would like to see him cleanup certain problems with the offense and make the steps necessary to take UG to the next level with LSU and Alabama. Is that asking too much or am I delusional ? Go Dawgs !!

Some of you guys are such idiots, yes Georgia did not live up to expectations the past few years. Think about it we had a AD that was more interested in making his own score than making Ga a better team. With McGarity working with Richt, not against him Georgia will continue to improve. We may not beat LSU this year but we are the team of the future.

You said I threatened to pitch a hissy fit. The only hissy fit I ever threatened to pitch was losing again to FL. As you can read that on that copied post

Also it clarifies my point once again about this contract extension talk. Like I said anything less than 11-1 with this seasons schedule is unexceptable before the season was played out. Now people come on here and act like Oh the ship has been turned around really. LOL

Come on

Again if we keep it within 10 points against LSU and win our bowl I’ll be glad to say things are looking better but like I said earlier this year this was an easy schedule

The SEC Championship will be a great indication just how good UGA is this year. If they at least play a competitive game with a chance to win in the 4th quarter then I think a long term contract is warranted. However, if they get blown out, 2 years max on an extension and personally I would wait until the end of next year to make the decision.

I still don’t like Richt as the head coach at UGA. I just don’t think he is capable of winning a National Championship.

Do you want him to play the N.E. Patriots on Wednesday night? What a bunch of idiots.I hear fire Richt and hire Dan Mullen. Mullen coached a team to 6-6 that should have gone 10-2 at worst and I’m hearing Penn St wants him too. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you idiots don’t deserve a coach like Mark Richt around here. Maybe you can get Sandusky, I hear he’s available pending trial. I believe there is actually some truth to the Crowell rumor. It’s a shame because he had so much potential. I told everyone he was not the best running back to come out of columbus in the past 7 years. Dantrelle Savage was and I have watched them both play many times here. The only reason Georgia didn’t take Savage was because he was undersized and underrated. Savage had a great two years at OK State out of JUCO college. He had the heart and skill, Crowell just had the skill. I really hope Keith Marshall can live up to the billing next season. Atleast were blessed enough to have a shot at another number 1 back in this recruiting class. We have to get a gem soon enough at tailback .right??? Go Dawgs!!

STEPHEN A. SMITH DAWG: Damn ! Here we go again !

December 2nd, 2011
1:06 am

If the persistant rumors are true about I.Crowell being kicked off the team just before the biggest game of the year, UG will be a decisive underdog vs. LSU. The Dawgs won’t win this game without a major contribution from the running game. Murray will need help from the running backs to keep LSU’s defense honest. But let’s keep it real UG is lucky to get to the SECCG after losing to SCarolina early in the year.

I predicted in the spring after Ealey quit, and C.King deliberately flunked out that Richt would have his hands full with Crowell. First, Crowell was a bad fit from the very start because the small Class A high school he played for pampered him and he played in a rotation or committee of running backs. In other words as we saw he is not a every down back. He is not going to be willing to block in pass protection and will pull himself immediately once a little winded. He never had to be in good condition because the rotation made up for his playing in spots. He was the most talented back on the roster at his high school, but that was only for the aforementioned reasons. Crowell was not committed to be the best athlete because he always had people telling how good he was without working to stay good. He did not have the physical build, stamina and the mental will power to be a dependable SEC running back and Richt with all his experience should have known that. Crowell was by appearance and actions very immature and would need a tremendous amount of guidance to make it through his freshman year and Richt is just finding that out now but he should have known during Crowell’s recruitment. Crowell was a dreaded, prima donna and was never the same after his drug test came up positive and was told he would not be permitted to continue smoking the hemp. That was the same as telling a bird not to fly, a dog not to bark, or a fish not swim. Richt should have known from his previous problems he has had with running backs, with Crowell all the warnings were there that he would be more trouble. How do you stop a kid from smoking hemp, when he’s been doing it so long he can’t do without it? This was on Richt’s watch and another talented but troubled kid has washed out of the UG football program.

Richt is stuck with smallish 5′-6″ Carlton Thomas and he too is troubled and probably being kept on the team only because Richt was contemplating releasing Crowell, due to his poor attitude after he was busted. Now the delusional fans are ready to lable Crowell a lazy, sorry cancer. So tell me this kool-aid drinkers, what do you call a head coach that consistently recruits potential cancers to the program? Nothing changes the RB coaching problems at UG, but the names and faces.

This is one of the primary reasons why Richt should not be given an extended contract at UG. He has orchestrated and coached up UG to be a revolving door program for running backs and no top back’s family should allow their son to jump into a RB cesspool or trash disposal. As for Crowell, he would fit right in at FSU or Ga.Tech, who use a running back by committee concept to which he is accustomed. As for Richt, one has to ask who’s the next big-time running back he’s going to recruit to UG to build up only to wash out in his RB trash disposal/cesspool. Richt has every reason to get agitated when people ask him about the RBs and it’s his fault not the immature kids he keeps recruiting to fail at UG. Despite IC’s many problems this flame out is on Richt, because he should have seen this coming just as sure as the dreads on the kid’s head !! IC was heralded as a 5 star RB now he’s a three star transfer. All potential 5 star RBs out there enter Richt’s program at your own risk !!

The criticism that continues on this web site about Crowell really show’s how little a lot of you know about football and certainly have not played , especially at running back. This is a very violent sport especially in the SEC where defense is so important and emphasized. Crowell had one month to learn the playbook and maybe 2 month’s to work with coach T to get into playing shape for SEC action. In the past CMR red shirted nearly all the incoming Freshmen but this year his job was on the line and Georgia needed everybody that could help. After purging the team of all the trouble makers the Freshmen were just going to have to get HAND ON experience. I have always been a little critical of CMR for not using Freshmen in the past but he would rather not put that much pressure on a 17 or 18 year old kid. Have any of you gone away to college as a 17 or 18 year old Freshmen? As brave and cool as you pretend to be it is very scary and most make a lot of mistakes. You have to get yourself up to get to class, you have to pass , you have to eat right and if you play football you have to do everything required of you . Our football team su++ed last year and a lot of you expected this kid to be our savor but you forgot that he is still trying to adjust to a radical life change and fit in. It has only been since August that he got here. By now he should have toughen up a lot but he probably need’s a full year to become conditioned for the demand’s of the SEC. We don’t know what’s going on with him and CMR but instead of criticizing him support him a little and let CMR decide if he need’s to go or not. If he leaves like Ealey and a few other have then so be it. Georgia will survive. This negative BS has got to stop with Georgia fans.
I’m just glad that CMR is finally doing his job by letting every player know who is in charge. McGarity will make sure that attitude continues with Richt.
With those that keep on about Crowell not being tough enough, I want you to arrange a pick up game with some former football players with most being 280 lb. linemen and a lot of the players being at least 260 lb. linebackers that are all still in their 20’s. Then run the ball at least 20 times and after one of those truck’s runs over your butt you would be crying to mama after your 2nd or 3rd carry , then you will get a fraction of what Crowell is going through.
I keep saying it LET CMR HANDLE THIS .

If Murray play’s in his normal panic mode then it will be very hard to win this game unless CMR finally accepts Murray’s limited ability If it was me and Murray started throwing dumb passes I would replace him with LeMay. And even if Murray can run up stats. to make his numbers look good he has a real problem in scoring touchdowns and it’s not because the line doesn’t block. Murray holds onto the ball way too long before doing something with it. Murray get’s too much credit and not enough criticism for the lack of production from the offense. the offense is not getting the job done , by a long shot.”

If the Athletic Board, Adams and/or McGarity, whoever makes the final decision, extends Richt more then 2 years, they are Fools. A ten win season against a bunch of nobodies…8 wins if you don’t count the glorified high school teams…means nothing. Negative BS
I should have been more clear about what BS i was talking about and I apologize for that. My entire rant was to get the fan’s to stop with the same thing about CROWELL. There are a lot of speculation about him and very little fact. If he end’s up leaving Georgia, then so be it but the fan’s need to get off this 17 – 18 year old’s back. If he need’s to go CMR will do it. If he stay’s everyone will see a much stronger and better runner next year with a full year of conditioning. When a young guy only get’s criticized for his mistakes and never a good word for the good he has done, over 800 yards as a Freshman, I’m afraid he may lose confidence and then he want be any good. I personally think he can still be one hell of a productive back and don’t want him to give up just yet. If it happen’s I think CMR will have no problem getting that part of his job right now that McGarity is looking over his shoulder.
I did not mean for it to sound like we should give the coaching staff a blanket support if everybody know’s where the problem’s lie. I am will never be one of the fan’s that just show up at the game’s and don’t care if we win or lose. I was a walk- on for the baseball team and actually made the team under Whatley but I could not keep my grades up with the practice and playing demands from the team so I refused the uniform. As a serious athlete growing up I was one of these that would not accept being second best at anything and will always feel would have been in Professional sports if I had not been too short .
My criticism about Bobo and Murray’s lack of consistent play , not being smart , is because I want Georgia to be a program where winning is the only acceptable outcome and I think that was not the case until McGarity was hired.. I am very encouraged with a lot of thing’s that CMR has done this year to finally show he can he a great coach and not just a good one.

_________________________________________________
You have wished away the only 2 games we played all entire season long, and just prior to the 3rd game of the season, you run in here and anoint Mark Richt as the guy who always finishes the seasons, but just only needs to learn how to start a season. In 2001, he ended the season after having beat # 4 vols at the start of the season and then losing to South Carolina, with Losses to Florida Auburn and Boston College. In 2002, just when we were ranked at the top of the polls and were playing a hapless Florida team of Ron Zook who had in 2002 the worse season Florida had ever had since 1979 with what should have been 6 Losses; yet, our inept # 52 Average Total Offense of all 11 years to-date went 0-11 on 3rd Down Conversions for the game and we were OUT OF IT right at the end of the season – gone from any meaningful discussion. 2003 yes we started the season with Loss to LSU, but we ended the season in 2003 by also Losing to another Ron Zook 5-Loss Florida team followed closely thereafter by Losing to LSU 13-34 in SEC Championship Game BLOW-OUT by LSU. 2004, yes we Lost to the vols early in the season, but just when everyone was anointing David Greene as the Heisman Trophy Winner and College Football Hall of Fame member when he never even made a single All-America which is a prerequisite for BOTH, at the end of 2004 we got out by Auburn 6- 24 and eliminated right at the last moment of the season from The SEC everyone basically handed to us before the season even started. 2005, DJ Shockley had us rolling along to begin the season, unlike the QB we have Starting the last 2 years for us nowadays, and then right at the end of the season, DJ gets injured and our braintrust offensive minds bragged to us all pre-game how great Joe Tereshinski III was going to be, and had anyone other than him played QB that game we beat Florida but we not only made Joe T III the starter for that game, but we put both HIM and JOE COX ahead of Matthew Stafford for the following season, with Matthew Stafford 4TH STRING on the Depth Chart. Back to 2005, so at the end of the season just when we were running the table, we Lose to Florida, Lose to Auburn the next week, back into The SEC Championship Game blow away LSU and flop in the Sugar Bowl that never happened we went to at the Georgia Dome and sat down booing Michael Adam$ and his wife and ended up down 0-28 before we could even stop booing at the game I never attended. This is where I pretty much became aware of what we are and what we aren’t. Some of you haven’t figured that out, YET. But, then again you weren’t 3.88 with me either or at Foy Fine Arts Bldg Top 5 % with your parents and yes Dad loved taking me to The Games. Happy to tell you about it. Eat your hearts out. 2006 yes started out slowly with the blow-out Loss to the vols 33-51 early but then we LOST to 8-Loss Vandie (Was this 2010 or 2006 TampaDawg?), and ended the season with Losses to Florida and Kentucky as Mark Richt continued upon his quest for a CONSECUTIVE 6-GAME LOSING STREAK TO EVERY SEC EAST TEAM IN A ROW. 2007, of course, the 6-GAME LOSING STREAK TO EVERY SEC EAST TEAM IN ROW continued with Losses early in the season, yes, to both South Carolina a 6-6 not even in a bowl game team and then the blow-out by a sorry vols team 14-35. If this is your idea of finishing strong 2007, then all I have to ask is where are the two wins at any point during that streak EITHER over teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 10 like this year either ? LSU had 2 such wins in their season and all Mark Richt is remembered for in 2007 is the 2 horrid losses to South Carolina 6-6 and to the vols 14-35. Thus we got jumped by LSU because of their 2 wins over teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 10 and thus Mark Richt ended up # 2 as he should have and LSU # 1 unanimously. In fact there were some polls who did not even put us # 2 for 2007. 2008 we started out like a ball of fire. # 1 in the nation consensus every poll. Then, we gave up 29, 31 and 42 consecutive points (not defensive issue when the offense gets NOTHING) in the only 3 games we played all of 2008 Alabama in the middle of 2008 and Florida and Georgia tek at the end of 2008. 2009, well we lost all the games in 2009 early and late. Okie State with Joe Cox chronic shoulder and flu early. LSU in the middle. Blow-out by the sorry vols AGAIN 19-45, then late in the season 2009 we added in losses to Florida 17-41 and topped that with the AGAIN to sorry Kentucky at the end of the season 2009. 2010, well when you have to go back 58 years all the way to 1953 to find an UGA team who lost more games, suffice it to say we lost all the games in 2010 at 6-7 early, middle and late. This season you run in here announcing we lost the early games but always win the late games every season under Mark Richt. Good time to make that statement ? Just before we GET BLOWN-OUT by LSU to get our cruddy bowl opponent for the 11th season in a row this time the Outback Bowl against a sorry opponent who might or might not end up in the Top 25 of any poll because they Lost to a 6-6 Northwestern this year. Oh that bowl game is 1pm on a Monday by the way.

No, I would not state that Mark Richt has particularly ended his 11 seasons here well. Would you ?

I think that McGarity is making CMR a better coach . At least we didn’t lose to a team this year that we were suppose to beat. We just about always lose one game to someone that we are suppose to beat. . Boise State and Oklahoma State lost to team they were favored to beat by 4 touchdowns. CMR is doing a much better job staying focused on the game we are playing that week and i think he is a lot more involved in helping Bobo with the offense.
I usually don’t like a rematch in a bowl game but this year I would love to play Boise State again.

7576Dawg, I've got a lot of respect for that.

I enjoy your posts as much as anyone’s. Of course, I read them all. It is my hobby. Wish we were beating the top teams and with you, remain concerned about 7 Running Backs in a row Mark Richt gave Scholarships to here with a wide receiver in charge of them for him Bryan McClendon whose Dad was a great running back when I was still there 7576Dawg and just after you were, sir. Roy Umstattd was our coach when I was there, and I met with him too. I was starting catcher in high school my junior and senior seasons and that is why I met with Roy Umstattd. I didn’t know Jim Whatley.

Isaiah Crowell has a lot of issues. Too many for me. When his own high school coach tells him that too, it might be a bit much to ask internet posters to not agree. There has been a lot of coddling going on around here all 11 years, and probably no better example of it than he. He still had a chance to make 1,000 yards if his head is right. I haven’t seen it. Would love to see him not be treated the way he is being treated so that with then some discipline he might grow up. It’s tough when you watch these kids and realize that they have got to WANT IT. I think that is coaching. I coach quite a bit, and it pretty much sums it up for me. You’ve got 1 go-round. Maybe someone will get through. I can tell you this, the way Mark Richt has treated him, it’s Mark Richt’s FAULT. There isn’t anything Mark Richt has done with him as far as Discipline that is right. His High School Coach, Carver’s Dell McGee has done more to help Isaiah Crowell at UGA than Mark Richt has. I have a lot of respect for the way Dell McGee has stepped up to help Isaiah Crowell in the last month or so. You cannot say that the 33 gone who were given Scholarships unlike you and me 7576DAWG, by Mark Richt for this 2011 season are all bad apples, Good Riddance and then not recognize that what caused them ALL is still here with the same lack of Discipline. There will be MANY MORE Isaiah Crowell recruits. If your Mission and Calling in Life is to Minister to them, then I presume you will basically search them out. 33 so far for 2011. Oh, and obviously that is the end of it. None for 2012 or ever again. Like I cannot remember 1975 1976 or 2001 through now. It is what it has always been on that front and continues unabated whether his new policy is to try to HIDE IT ALL FROM US OR NOT, which is all that is happening. I do take exception that all that, big time.

Still talking about the schedule? I guess once the winning streak got to a cozy number for some of you,say 5 games, Richt and McGarity should have looked to schedule a tougher opponent so it would help validate this streak for some of you.

Of course, what we could have done is to actually win these games we should have won this season – such as South Carolina and Boise State – the only two teams who are ranked in any poll whatsoever on this day today in which you NOW dream up your EXCUSES for our schedule that does not hold water, Lowcountry Bullddawg.

We could even beat LSU tomorrow I will be at. Will you ?

We have played teams who are ranked in the polls while you WHINE about HATERS saying our schedule includes 10 wins over nobodies in a season in which 25 OTHER teams make 10-Win Seasons too.

When you are not even in the Top 25 for 2011 season and have a 10-Win season, what does 10-Win Season mean anymore ?

We played good teams, 3, who are ranked today in every top 25.

We will NOT have won any of them.

Well you can’t justify firing someone who won 10 games in a row. So Richt will stay. UGA is what it is, a good football program but not a great one, and Richt is a good coach but not a great one. If the EAST were up this year, this team would have probably finished 8-4, but since it was so weak, the Dawgs took advantage and had a good year. Richt and Co. deserve credit for not losing games they should win; that seems to be the norm in college football these days. But lets not confuse this for some dynasty in the making. The Dawgs might win the East the next couple of years, but they are not in the same vicinity as Alabama or LSU. Richt just doesn’t have the capability to build a program like a Nick Saban can. The proof is in the pudding. Richt’s a good guy, whose won a lot of games, who put’s good football teams on the field most years. If UGA is satisfied with good, then keep Richt. But if National titles is what they want, they’ll need someone else.

Then, you can't justify firing any of these guys EITHER

December 2nd, 2011

Teams who get 10-Win Season this season alone :
1-LSU
2-ALABAMA
3-OKLAHOMA STATE
4-STANFORD
5-VIRGINIA TECH
6-ARKANSAS
7-STANFORD
8-OREGON
9-SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
10-HOUSTON
11-BOISE STATE
12-SOUTH CAROLINA
13-WISCONSIN
14-MICHIGAN STATE
15-MICHIGAN
16-KANSAS STATE
17-OKLAHOMA
18-TCU
19-NEBRASKA
20-WEST VIRGINIA
21-CINCINNATI
22-SOUTHERN MISS
23-ARKANSAS STATE
24-CLIMPSUM FARMERS
25-PENN STATE

There will be 10-Win teams this season who do NOT make the Top 25 obviously.

Which one of these Top 25 teams, again, is it that Mark Richt beat to keep his job ? Or, are we now here at UGA, a program where 25 other teams have done what we’ve done with 10-Win Season, and US WITH NO WIN OVER ANY OF THEM ?

I have to admit that I was concerned about CMR after 0-2 start and then when we piddled around with some of the other teams …..I just didn’t think we were very good. But we got better. However, in the middle of the season I still didn’t think we would beat AU and Tech or FL for that matter. But we did. CMR has proved that he is the man. Fellow Dawgs just my two cents but yes we need to give Coach Richt an extension but with the understanding that Mike BoBo is the QB Coach and he has to hire an established OC. Next we have to extend Coach Grantham’s and Coach Friends contracts as these two along with their assistants have done a great to very good job and getting this team to where they are whether they beat LSU or not.

Richt is fine but Bobo’s job as OC should be under scrutiny tomorrow. He has been OC for 5 years and his offense has yet to get it done against an elite defense. The only exception that I can think of is this year’s South Carolina game if you want to call their defense elite, but we still lost that game in part because Murray didn’t protect the ball. We are never going to win any championships if we can’t move the ball and score points against the LSUs and Bamas of the world. It doesn’t matter how great the defense is. Bobo needs to step it up tomorrow. No excuses. The O-line is in relatively good shape. Crowell is apparently back. Murray is on fire. NO EXCUSES for Bobo please.

Thanks.

Most trips to SEC chanpionship game, most wins over winning teams, 75% win record, college football’s best coach ambassador–the list goes on and on. Richt is too nice a man to give Georgia the finger for the way he’s been treated this season by the “fire Richt fans” but if he left to go to Penn state or someonewhere else when the fans are really fans and appreciate a great coach, I wouldn’t blame him.

This has been fun to see, but truthfully, the streak has been against unusually weak teams who we were favored to beat. I would hope McGaritywould want how the game plays out Saturday, and how we compete in our bowl game before extending Coach Richt. He does have 2 more years on his contract.

The last few times we played great, unbeaten SEC teams, we got our butts handed to us. Bama, UF, AU all had an easy time. I’m not expecting a win tomorrow, but I would like a close, hard-fought game, with a good gameplan, and good adjustments, not just from Grantham, but from Bobo/Richt, also.

If the Bulldogs fight to the very end vs LSU, that would mean more to me that all of the other ten wins combined.

At best, Mark Richt has proven himself to be an underachiever. Kirby Smart will one day go to be HC at a University and provide them with multiple national championships, while Mark Richt will grow complacent after the smoke clears, and provide a passable effort at best that includes zero national championships. That ship sailed when Stafford and Moreno left town after falling victim to our coaches poor decisions. And let’s not forget our spurning of Cam Newton. Richt and Bobo determined that he would never be a capable quarterback, and passed on him.
Of course Richt rose to the occasion with his job on the line. The talent has always been here, and he is a capable coach…when the notion takes him. Don’t let the warm fuzzies this underachiever has given us prevent us from acquiring a workaholic coach intent on continued success, and an actual challenge to Nick Saban, which Richt will never be. He’s a good man and I wish him well wherever he goes, as long as he goes.

As for CMR, I will always remember how things were prior to his arrival (low morals, lower winning percentage and few SEC titles) with Donnan and Goff and remember that he brought this team back from true mediocrity. This will be their fourth appearance in the SEC title game with two SEC titles already won. I still believe he can get the NC to Athens and I hope you still live there to see it shine. And the UGA administrators are like crack addicts – they are so desperate for winning that they will sell body parts for a sniff. Can’t they at least wait 2 more games to talk extension? Or maybe next season when the schedule might have some meat on it?

I hope after watching this beat down by LSU that the what on an extention for CMR!!!! This team played worse thatn poorly in the second half and BOBO’ play calling was down right ugly before halftime. Lets not put more money into a guy that has won only 1 SEC title and has NEVER played for a BCS title!!!

Jumped off the Richt bandwagon 3 years ago, and haven’t jumped back on. Whoopdeefreakingdoo- they went 10-2 regular season, with 3 losses. Those 3 losses came to 3 good teams, and the 10 wins to teams that were mediocre at best.

When are UGA homers going to wake up and realize that Richt is just not that great of a coach? A great man, but not a g reat coach, particularly in the SEC. Get past the overall win-loss record and truly examine the record against RANKED OPPONENTS. It’s awful! His play calling, personnel decisions, clock management- he does not have what it takes to be great in the SEC. As a UGA graduate, I am embarassed by the tolerance for mediocrity! For over $3 million, we are getting taken to the cleaners!

I can’t understand why everyone is so happy with the outcome this year! We just got killed by LSU who is headed for a second National championship against Bama, I guess Dawg fans are happy with losing never getting to the big game and winning! I hate this! Richt will never be more than an average coach while the rest of the SEC wins championships! SUCKS!

In a 13 game season where you only beat 2 of the top 25 teams teams loose to 3 and beat 8 teams that had below .500 hundred. I think Reict should not but a fired diploma.

Ga beat Tech and Fla—–neither of those teams are on top of their game right now———if Ga does not improve next year- they will be right back where they were 2 years ago———-Ga needs a coach that knows the running game—-why not let Grantham be the head coach for a while and let Mark Richt do paper work—

Last time I looked record against ranked opponents has no bearing on getting to the NC. Just ask OK State. And just for the record only 2 teams get to play in the SEC Championship and we were one of them. Only the winner has a shot at the NC, a game that here again only 2 teams get to play. We are on our way back and frankly I’m glad dead weight like you , barneyfife ain’t on the wagon with us cause you ain’t really a DAWG!

As long as Richt is head coach UGA we have always have a shot at being the best second tier team in the SEC.
He will never Coach competitively against Miles and Saban because he won’t keep his foot on the gas when he gets ahead….and he won’t give any effort on special teams…I knew the Dawgs were in trouble at the 2nd half interview when the on field reporter asked Richt what his game plan was and he said (We wanted to jump on em in the first half and try and hold on in the second) (paraphrase) that’s his whole philosophy and why Richt won’t fire BoBo for the ultra conservative calls in the second half…it Richt… not Bobo that’s to blame…yes we won 8 in a row but who did we really beat…a terrible eastern SEC roster Coastal Carolina and N Mex State…Les Miles beat the crap out of Ga by 2 platooning 330 lb lineman and 240 lbs backs. How doe UGA NOT have a running back (with any balls) over 170 lbs????? My God where does he recruit … Pop Warner Leagues???
And Rambo is the prime example of whats wrong with our D backs he should be a WR cause he absolutely hits like one… he RAN from tackles the 2nd half of the LSU game…
I say we get rid of Richt now and take our lumps for a year…Coaching in the SEC is a 360 day a year job..how many recruits are being lost because Richt’s heart is in the mission field..I maintain if you need a 4th for bible study he’s your man but we need an aggressive take no prisoners (cause they don’t take it easy on us) .style of coaching that puts more emphasis on heart, hustle and work ethic than speed.

@ GSO DAWG “We need to pay the man. Pay him Urban and Saban money.”

Why, he doesn’t have an Urban/Saban/Miles resume. Should we pay him because he is the longest tenured SEC coach, or because of his zero National Championships. Urban – 2/Saban -2/Miles fixing to be 2/Richt – 0. Just my two cents.

Would Shine please list his coaching experience since he is such a great evaluator of coaching talent. Bet he never had on a football helmet in his life or maybe he played high school football and thinks he is an expert. Typical. Georgia is very lucky to have the staff they have now. Hope we can keep it together for several more years.

FLA DAWG

After the LSU loss we now know for certain that it was more the ease of schedule rather than team improvement that accounted for our 10 game win streak.

Certainly we saw some absolutely AWESOME DEFENSE in the first half setting an SECC Game 1st half record by holding LSU to ZERO First Downs.

But the nuclear meltdown of the second half seemed to feed on itself so badly that the question of our coaching on the Offensive side of the ball has come up again. For many of us, it never went away.

Grantham has earned his keep and more. I hope he is given a big raise and multi year contract.
Bobo’s position as OC should be changed in my opinion. Put him back with the QB or RBs and in Recruiting or better yet, unload him altogether.

I have considered Richt to be a great human being and respect him for his faith and charitable work.
But this man simply does not have the fire in the belly to be a Championship SEC caliber coach in today’s world.
We seemed to have had a Gameplan for the first half of the LSU game and then we kinda “Winged It” in the second.

I’m afraid extending Richt’s contract to a multi year deal will only continue the dismal performance we’ve had for the past three years.

Ya gotta admit the only tough teams we played this year were Boise State, SC and LSU – and we lost to all of ‘em.

The MSU game will tell us how bad we are. If we lose that game we will have made absolutely ZERO progress in three years.

But this is all just my opinion and I plan to cheer on my Dawgs against Mich State.

It’s a mistake.

The Academic All American list was released and only 1 player from UGA is on the list. Punter Drew Butler, majoring in Kinesiology……Whatever that is.

Meanwhile, Nebraska has 3 on that list.
