Richt, Bulldogs respectful of LSU, but not intimidated

ATHENS — Just finished covering Georgia’s weekly media day session at UGA’s Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall. Bulldogs coach Mark Richt held his weekly press conference followed by interviews with selected players.

This was the 13th such session I’ve attended this season and probably the most lively from the standpoint of the players’ comments. They’re most definitely focused and motivated for Saturday’s SEC Championship Game against No. 1-ranked LSU.

First, I’ll give you a quick synopsis of the highlights with regard to the news of the day, then I’ll offer up a transcription othe comments from Richt and some selected players.

  • Richt didn’t go into much detail but it looks like freshman tailback Isaiah Crowell (left ankle sprain) is going to be ready to play. He practiced without limitations on Monday and is expected to go again today. The Bulldogs are not making any of the tailbacks available this week.
  • Richt was much more vague about backup tailback Richard Samuel, saying only that the big junior would not practice on Tuesday. But I happened to run into Samuel in person on campus shortly before the press conference and he was still on crutches. Asked directly if he’d play this week, Samuel said, “probably not.”
  • So that leaves the Bulldogs with Carlton Thomas, Ken Malcome (who started last week) and Brandon Harton, to fill in for the fragile Crowell against LSU. Not suprisingly, Richt said he thought how UGA’s tailbacks fare and hold against the Tigers is “a big concern.”
  • Richt said he actually hasn’t thought about what kind of information former UGA quarterback Zach Mettenberger could divulge to LSU, his new team. But he was also skeptical about any insight he could provide and that the Bulldogs have changed their offensive style with the hurry-up and all their signals since Mettenberger was in Athens.
  • Richt didn’t come right out and pronounce starting DE DeAngelo Tyson out for the game but had a pessimistic tone about his availability. Like Samuel, Richt said Tyson would not practice on Tuesday. The good news for Georgia is Tyson’s backup, sophomore Garrison Smith, was named SEC co-Defensive Lineman of the Week because of the job he did filling in for him against Georgia Tech (7 tackles, 1.5 TFLs).

That was the gist of the actual news items. Here’s what the Bulldogs had to say:

HEAD COACH MARK RICHT

Opening Statement:

“I could have been out recruiting today, but we’re here instead. So that’s a good thing. LSU is a great football team. I think the one thing that stands out to me is their physicality. They’re not real tricky. Their goal is not to trick anybody. Their goal is to line up and play real sound football in all three phases and basically physically maul you; wear you down and wear you out, make you quit. They’ve been able to do it most every game they’ve played. They have a very impressive group of athletes. They are extremely well-coached by Coach (Les) Miles and his staff.

“Since I’ve been at Georgia, LSU has been the winningest team in the Southeastern Conference. It just so happens that three of the four times we’ve been in the SEC Championship Game, LSU has been our opponent. We’re looking forward to the opportunity and the challenge of it.”

On whether LSU might pick the brain of quarterback Zach Mettenberger:

“I didn’t even think about that until just now. They might be. We haven’t changed an awful lot, and Zach certainly knew what we were doing. They might be picking his brain, I don’t know. There is so much that you can get on film now days, I don’t know how much more he could add to it. We have also gone to a no-huddle since Zach has gone, and we have code names and hand singles that he has no idea about. I don’t think it will be a factor, but it could be.”

On whether Georgia has played a team comparable to LSU:

“They aren’t many defenses out there that are so obscure that you don’t know what’s going on. The thing about them, they have plenty of diversity in their defense, but they aren’t trying to trick you. They aren’t trying to trick you offensively in any way, shape or form. They’ll line up and see who the best team is. They make very few mistakes. They are plus-19 in the turnover ratio, which is number one in our league. We are number two at plus-10. Of course that stat is always a huge one. It’s been very big for us in the last 10 games. We’ve not lost the turnover battle. I don’t know if they’ve lost one all season long. To be plus-19, if they’ve lost any they might have lost one. But I imagine they won the battle every time, or tied it. “

On maintaining stamina against LSU:

“We sub a lot in some areas. Not all areas. We have a little bit of depth in certain spots. I think one thing that helps everybody is the amount of TV timeouts during a game. I think there will probably be four in each quarter, so you don’t play very long. If somebody gets in there and drives 12 plays, or there are 10-12-14 play drives, sometimes that can wear you down. There are just so many timeouts, so many change of possessions. I’m not too concerned about that. We’re in pretty good condition I think.”

On the importance of a quarterback’s maturity level:

“You could probably say it in the NFL more than any league: If you don’t have good quarterback play it’s hard to win, period. Of course the Colts don’t have Peyton (Manning) anymore, and they’re struggling. If New England didn’t have (Tom) Brady, what would they be able to do? I don’t know unless someone else stepped in and played great. It’s hard to win in our league without at least good, solid quarterback play. If your quarterback is playing well, I think the team feeds off that. If things are going rough and your quarterback spits the bit, I think you are in big trouble. If he can stand in the gap and stay strong and keep fighting and encouraging and start to make plays, I think a really good quarterback can pull you out of a bad situation. I think Aaron (Murray) has gotten to the point where I don’t think anyone every questions his toughness mentally or physically. No one ever questions his preparation. No one questions his loyalty to the team. I think everybody responds well to him if things got rough.”

On whether Aaron Murray’s demeanor has changed during the season:

“Not really. He is so well-prepared and he creates such good habits in practice that even if he does have an off day or an off quarter or a bad throw here and there, he can’t help but get back in pretty good shape.”

On defensive coordinator Todd Grantham moving Georgia’s linebackers around:

“It’s problematic. Even if you look at LSU’s secondary. They have done a lot of moving guys around, and it is kind of hard to know where a guy is going to line up sometimes. Every player is different. They have different characteristics. There may be a certain match up you are trying to get, but if you don’t know for sure where I guy is going to line up it is hard plan for that. Once the game gets going not many people are changing left and right, but from one game to the next if you are not exactly sure who is going to line up where it’s hard to say ‘I like this play in this situation versus this player,’ if you don’t’ know where he’s going to line up.”

On if Georgia’s been able to move around more on defense this year compared to last year:

“Oh yeah. Some of it was because of injury. Some of it was because of the style of play of who we might have been going against. Even when Shawn Williams ended up playing linebacker one game it was just a game we thought we could get away with it. But the very next game we put Amarlo (Herrera) there because it was more of a downhill, physical running football team. The personality of the other team’s offense will allow you to do that from time to time.”

On Georgia’s defense going against LSU’s offense:

“It’s going to be interesting to see. That’s maybe one of the most compelling match ups of the game is their run offense versus our run defense.”

On team’s being defined as “special” teams and how he sees this year’s team:

“I think for coaches teams are special when the guys work hard and when the guys trust the staff in that they are coachable, teachable and you have sense that they will fight for you. You get sense that care about you and they care about each other. They care about Georgia and they care about doing things the Georgia way. All those things get coaches excited about teams. But I think these guys as a whole are that way. It’s easy to say that when you are winning, but even when we were 0-2, I really felt way about them and I think they did too. Before the season I didn’t know how the season would start because of the schedule we had and all, but I just felt like we had chance to be a really good team before it was over. I thought we were going to have a team that would really improve as the season went along and I think we have. The question is going to be how much have we improved and have we really got to the point we can play this game and get the job done.”

On any concern with Georgia’s tailbacks going up against LSU:

“It’s a concern. I’m concerned with how our guys will play at the tailback position, but we’ll see. We’ve found a way so far having to mix and match a little bit. On paper, you certainly look at their backs and they are pretty stacked, they’re physical and they are more of a known entity than what we’ve got right now.”

On the notion of using two or three guys versus using the hot guy at tailback:

“I think you have to, but I think they can be one in the same. I think you can have two or three really good backs, but there may be a particular game that one guy is hot and you can let him ride. But through the course of a season you better have at least two and maybe three guys who can carry the ball for you, especially when you run the ball the way LSU wants to run it.”

On preparing the younger players for this weekend’s game:

“Right now, my goal is just to continue to prepare like we’ve been preparing for the last 12 games. Just to get these guys to understand what they are doing schematically, what type of techniques they are going to have to deal with as far as the coverage techniques and maybe learn about as much as they can about each corner and they strengths and weaknesses of them. Then just go and attack. We really treat it like any other game.”

On Alec Ogletree’s return to the defense:

“Alec is fast. He is physical. He loves football. He’s very competitive. Without a doubt, we became better with him. I don’t know if you could prove anything statistically, but we’re a better defense with him than without him I can promise you.”

On how much tackling there has been in practice last week and will be this week this late into the season:

“Last week, we were in pads Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. It was mainly to allow our scout team to go as hard and has fast as they could against our defense to try and at least give them a taste of what it might be like (facing Georgia Tech’s offense). We’ll go back to our normal routine of (Monday) in shorts, today in pads, tomorrow shells and Thursday in shorts and helmets again. We will not tackle against each other today. It’s too late in the season and by now you either know how to tackle or you don’t. I think early in the year until you’ve established it and you’re pretty good at it you got to keep doing it.”

On tackling in practice throughout the season:

“I don’t know exactly when we reduced it. We had probably 30 minutes worth when the season started and it reduced to 20 minutes, reduced to 10 minutes as the season went on.”

On comparing UGA and LSU’s defenses:

“They are both good defenses. They really have some great characteristics of great defenses. Both of them do with big physical lineman, linebackers who run and hit and safeties and corners who can play ball. They’re all good. They are well coached. They’ve both had a lot of success. I’m sure they are both very confident in their ability to play the game and play defense. They are a lot alike in those characteristics.”

On how Georgia can win with LSU being the favorite:

“You do what you do and you do it well. They’re going to do what they do and they are going to try and do it well. I’m a broken record on the turnover ratio but that’s huge. If we can come out of there and win that part of the game we got a lot better chance of winning it. You don’t want to give up the big play on special teams. I just think that we have to look at our strengths and play to those and just get after it. That’s really what it’s going to come down to. It’s going to be a good football game.”

On being around football as long as he has if he trusted the team to handle their business in the locker room after starting 0-2:

“There was no business in the locker room to handle. You know what I’m saying? There was no dissension. There was no finger pointing. There was no loss or lack of confidence in each other coaches to players, players to coaches. I thought we had good leadership. I thought we had good work ethic. I thought we had a pretty good talent base and needed to grow up a little bit in some areas. I didn’t know for sure what was going to happen, but I wasn’t looking at the landscape and saying we don’t have a chance – we don’t have the personnel, I’m worried about the chemistry, I’m worried about guys jumping ship – none of that. It didn’t even come close. We just went back to work, and thankfully, began to win.”

On if any guys “took the bull by the horns” after the 0-2 start to get the team going:

“I can’t sit here and say that, but the usual suspects of Ben Jones, (Brandon) Boykin, (Aaron) Murray, Orson (Charles), DeAngelo Tyson, Abry Jones – all these guys – Jarvis Jones – it was more of a team thing really. I can’t sit here and say one or two guys all of a sudden pulled everybody out of some kind of funk. We weren’t in a funk. We didn’t get to that point.”

On LSU trying to win a national championship and UGA trying to win an SEC Championship and if that puts added pressure on LSU and make it easier on UGA:

“There’s plenty of motivation in my opinion for both teams to play their best. When you get used to winning it becomes a habit just like anything else can become a habit, so you are going to play in such a way that gives you the best chance of winning again. Only one team can win and we know that, but I think that both teams have plenty motivation to get up and play in this ball game. Just playing in the (Georgia) Dome is a special thing. You know if you are in there something good happened to you, especially this time of year. The fans will be excited. The players will be excited. Coaches will be jacked up. It’s going to be a great atmosphere.”

On LSU playing this season with a bullseye on them all year and getting everyone’s best shot:

“A lot of people had them preseason number one, and I’ve been on teams that were preseason number one and you do get everyone’s best shot. I think their style of play is just so solid that you have a lot less chance of messing it up on any one given day. It’s real simple, it’s real solid and it’s real physical and you just get after people and they’ve been able to do it.”

On the availability of DeAngelo Tyson and Richard Samuel IV:

“Both of them we really don’t know for sure. Neither one of them will practice today. I guess I can say that. It’s kind of day to day on those guys.”

GEORGIA PLAYERS

DE Abry Jones

  • On playing in the SEC Championship: “Most of the guys realize that this is a big game for us. Everyone wants to go out and win the SEC Championship. We are just going to go out and do what we have done all year. We are focusing on staying disciplined, executing plays when the time is right and try to make many mistakes.”
  • On starting 0-2: “What we have done this kind of takes the bad taste from last year out of our mouth. We’re happy that we have won 10 in a row, but we aren’t focusing too much on that. We are really focused on this game because of what we did to get here.”

LB Mike Gilliard

  • On playing LSU: “This is such a big time game. I feel like as a defense, we have something to prove. They are the number one team in the country and we have to go out there and make plays. This game is about the best team from the West playing the best team from the East. It doesn’t get any better than that. LSU is a great team with a great quarterback and four really talented, young running backs who will pound you. I’m really excited about going out there and playing on Saturday.”
  • On playing for the SEC Championship: “It feels great to be able to play for the championship. I feel like we focused on getting better as a team each week. I think we have done just that. To start 0-2 and to go and play for the SEC Championship, it feels great.”

QB Aaron Murray

  • On playing in the SEC Championship: “It’s going to be exciting. We’ve been working for this since January; it’s been our goal to get back and be able to compete for an SEC Championship. We just have to treat it like any other game and go out there and work hard in practice all week and we’ll be ready to go.”
  • On LSU: “They’re a very talented team, there’s a reason why they’re number one in the nation. They’re sound everywhere. I haven’t watched a lot of offensive film on them, obviously I’ve been just focused on the defense. They’re very talented and very fast all over the place. It’s going to be a huge challenge for us.”

WR Chris Conley

  • On playing in the SEC Championship as a freshman: “Everybody always talks about the SEC Championship and championships, period, as big games, but it’s still the same thing; we come in on Monday and do game reviews, we look over the scout report and you look at a team and you see there are 11 guys on the field. There is a certain magnitude and prestige that comes with a game like this, but really, when you thin about it, it’s just another game and we’ve got to prepare the same way.”
  • On pre-game nerves this week in the Dome: “I don’t really get nervous because of who we play. I really like to focus on me and the things that I can do and the things that I can control. When it comes down to getting nervous, I don’t really get nervous because of teams. I might get butterflies before I step on the field, but not necessarily because of who we’re playing or what’s at stake because if you play like that I feel like you aren’t going to do your best.”
  • On LSU’s defense: “LSU’s defense is a great defense, it’s going to be a challenge for our offense. It’s something that we embrace, it’s something that we look at as we’re going into this week and making the game plan for them. They’re very talented up front, very explosive in the secondary. They’re very talented. As a lot of people know, they have players who can make plays, stretch the field and cover a lot of grass. It’s definitely a challenge for us, going into this week and knowing what we have to prepare for.”
  • On UGA being a big underdog: “I actually love being in that role. It’s a role that I’m used to being in from high school. It’s a role that I feel like we were in at the beginning of the season we had previously. I feel like we thrive in that role. It’s one that we’re really feel comfortable in because it puts a chip on our shoulder and makes us work. Teams don’t really expect much from us. So I think it’s a role we’re going to embrace.”

OG Chris Burnette

  • On embracing the underdog role: “I think most of us on the team try not to listen to what media may be saying as far as us being the underdog or whether we are favored to win or stuff like that. We understand that the stuff we do and the stuff we see on film is what is really important. So we don’t put much stock into what a lot of people say. We just try to go out and execute on Saturdays.”
  • On how preparing for game: “It’s just another football game. It really is. When you start overanalyzing it, a lot of times that’s when you get really nervous and makes mistakes you wouldn’t normally make. We’re just trying to be calm and realize that, hey, this may be the best team in the country but if we play our best game we should be fine.”
  • On intimidation factor of LSU’s defense: “I think it’s more respect and motivation. I would never say that any of us are intimidated by anybody. I mean, they’re a bunch of 18- to 24-year old guys. As long as we go out and do what we do we’ll be fine. But I do have a lot of respect for them. Their defense is great, one of the best in the country and our conference. Having a chance to play them is an awesome opportuntity.”

First of all why would you divulge the status of Samuels? Let LSU have to wait to find out what our injuries are. They don’t need help from our press reporters. Second you spelled signals singles in Coach Richt’s comment about changing hand signals.

This GT fan hopes UGA wins. It will be a hard fought
and close game. UGA is peaking at the right time. I don`t bet on games but would take UGA and whatever points if I did. Gald to see those who wanted CMR and Bobo to go have now retreated. You guys should be thankful for your coaches and the players you are blessed with.

I like the sound of what’s coming out of Athens. Good confident but humble tone. Very little bulletin board fodder. I think Georgia gives the Tigers a better game than the rest of the world thinks, Vegas included.

Amen, DawginLex.

Georgia will need to control the ground game, the short passing game, and overall time of possession to prevent LSU from running wild. LSU can score in bunches, and Georgia has to methodically control the pace.

First – Who cares about Samuel’s status and hand signals. Coach Richt announced in a press conference full of reporters, clearly he is OK with it. I am not saying I don’t want Samuel IV in the back field.

Second – I think we match up well against LSU. It will be a test for UGA’s defense, but I think if UGA can stop the run and make LSU’s QBs’ win the game then UGA has a chance. We are going to need some lights out special teams and offense. Bobo – put the petal to floor and don’t let up.

Just makes me sick about Deangelo Tyson. He is a senior who has worked his tail off all year and gets taken out and denied a chance to play in the SECCG because of a stinking dirty illegal chop block. (A flag was thrown on the play.) Illegial chop blocks should result in an automatic disqualification from the game just like a punch does. If a guy gets punched he at least has a helmet on, these big Dlineman have nothing protecting their ankles and knees. We are going to need all hands on deck to slow down LSU and our chances took a big hit on the second freaking play against Tech.

Its either join Dawg Nation and support these boys this weekend, or just jump ship now. We dont need any negativity or dissention regarding your haterade attitude. These boys have worked hard all year..and yes, maybe lucked up in some areas to get to the SECCG….which many didnt think would be possible after the last years results. But WE need these players to know that we’re on the train rolling into the Dome and backing them up, just as they did for us on the field all this season. This has nothing to do with drinking kool-aid..or any of those nonsense remarks I hear from those fair-weather fans!! We’re playing the #1 team in the Nation and have a chance to make a big splash, and wreck this BS BSC thing going on!! Show some damn pride and support all the hardwork this team has done this year!! Allright, let’s clear this up right now. Tyson wasn’t even touched on that play. The penalty were on completely different players. Go back, watch the replay, and you’ll see that Tyson immediately limped after jumping off the hiked ball. I guess he just twisted it or something. It wasn’t Tech’s dirty play.

I know that having Samuel out may not seem like a big deal…but having little Carlton Thomas as our number 2 RB for this game in particular is not a comfortable feeling. LSU is big, fast and physical…probably would murder a smaller back like Harton, Thomas is just about the same size. Hopefully we see Crowell and Malcome and that’s it.

Amazing how LSU can have 3-4 top tier SEC quality backs all 220lbs or more…it’s like they recruit from the NFL!

“I just had too much Bama in me”

So classic…

It will be ALL about Special Teams. We have ZERO and they have about 9 out of 10. RB’s? Forget about it, Bobo will go about his normal business of wasting 15-20 plays on lining up in the I and running it up the middle with his FAMOUS Shotgun Draw.

Let’s just hope they score enough on the rest of the plays to give the D a chance to hold on. Bobo better draw up 20 plays to start the game and give us a chance to go up on the score and make their offense throw the ball.

Otherwise, it will be another pat on the back for the lame ESPN gameday crew.

Dawginlex, I had similar thoughts about Malcome. It sounds like he was discouraged to point of actually quitting just a few weeks ago, and he subsequently listened to some sound advice and decided to hang in there. Then he ends up starting against Georgia Tech! Quite a turn around and quite a lesson on not quitting in life. He has about 25 carries now, and he had done a good job of pounding the rock–probably the best of any of our TBs minus RSIV. I think his complaint was that he believed he could pound the rock and he felt he wasn’t getting a chance (just guessing based on what was reported), so you gotta love Bobo dialing his number ~nine times in a row at the end of the Tech game. It looks like CMB said OK, Ken, let’s see what you can do. I hope we will see him break some tackles Saturday, along with IC and the other TBs. I think he could be very important in this one, but we’ll see. I’ve been wrong before. The other young guy I have really been watching is G. Smith. I’ve noticed his motor all season. It is very much like D. Pollack and J. Jones imo. He did slow down a little when he stayed in, but he played a great game. I love watching Tyson, but the good news here is that Smith can play this game pretty well. Go Dawgs.

I’m a UGA fan and pleased with how they rebounded from the fiasco of last season, especially with little depth on the offensive line and an overall very young team on both sides of the ball. But let’s face it, folks, Georgia is going to be destroyed. This game reminds me of when Alabama came to town for the “blackout” and we got steamrolled. We just didn’t have the toughness to stand up to them…let alone the depth. Same story here. This could get ugly in a hurry if they start gashing us and our offense is shut down by their defense, which is a distinct possibility. If we can keep it close, there will be no shame in losing to the consensus #1 team.

DeAngelo Tyson chopped blocked and injured was dirty. If that is the kind of blocking tactics being taught by Georgia Tech, the ACC needs to get involved or the NCAA. There have been other kids injured by this chop blocking this year. This is very dangerous and ruins careers.

Good Luck to Georgia. The deck is really stacked against you.

LSU is by far better than any team that UGA has played all season(nothing news breaking there), the issue UGA will have was touched on by Coach Richt and that was the depth of LSU. LSU has really 3 deep players where the talent level does not drop off at all. The interchangable players are going to create issues if UGA is not able to run the ball and move the ball.

I know many UGA are talking like they are going to win this game, but in the end the talent level is unbalanced in LSU’s favor. That will be the telling story of the game. UGA does have somewhat of a home field advantage and the noise will be a factor.

In the end it will not matter much in the overall big picture with LSU practically guaranteed a spot in the BCS game against Alabama. I know I know, many of you do not think Alabama should be there, the problem is that most voters, and computers do and in the end the goal of UGA is to bring home the championship and earn rings that say SEC Champions 2011.

I am reading some of the comments and I am indeed intrigued. The Dawgs will certainly have their hands full trying to pull out a win against LSU. Certainly they should not be scared or feel intimidated. They should go into the game as they have espoused, confident and sure of a win. As one blogger elluded to, outside of the loss to Boise, the Dawgs did not get to play any of the SEC top three this year until now, so the jury is still out, but will be finalized on Saturday. As far as the Dawgs shocking the nation, Ark was spotted 14 and thought they were well on their way to do the same thing and we know how that ended. I do wish the Dawgs to have a competitive game and the bulldog nation well in their next game, but this one belongs to the Tigers.

Rx; Regarding DeAngelo Tyson’s injury, it occurred on the first play of the game – the reverse pass. DeAngelo changes direction to pursue the WR who throws the ball. It is then that he is blindsided by a tech lineman diving in on his knee from behind and causing the ankle sprain. Very cheap shot if you ask me. DeAngelo tried to stay on the field for the second play, but the damage by the tech player was already done.

If the UGA that played against Auburn and GT shows up, this is going to be a close game. If the UGA that played the rest of the year shows up, LSU should wiin handily. They are a better team with a better 10 win record–at best, both claims are debatable. UGA handed the game to SC and even Spurrier called the win luck, saying SC got outplayed. Boise and Arkansas are about equal as are Clemson and GT. SC and UGA’s schedules are otherwise nearly identical and UGA stomped AU late in the year while SC lost to them at home. But… all of you people who keep saying they’ll win because they’re so much faster, and bigger, and more talented than UGA – you have lost your minds! LSU continues to get top ten recruiting talent every year. Well guess what?! So does UGA. LSU has a big offensive line. Guess what? The average size of UGA’s offensive lineman is bigger than any NFL team!! UGA has two 350 pound nose tackles. Boykin and Smith are as fast as any two DB’S in the country. LSU is a little deeper and more experienced and that’s it!! Georgia is an extremely young team that has grown up a lot since the Boise St game. This may not be our year to win the SEC but it will be a competitive game and the future is very bright…

Just in case some folks do not pay attention to the Bookmakers.

The line started at 11.5, moved to 12.5 and now on the Big Vegas Board it is 14 to 14.5

What does that mean to those who do not gamble big is that big money players and I mean bets of 100,000.00 OR higher are laying money on LSU to cover the points spreads at the lower line so the Vegas folks had to raise it to get more money bet on the other side. When money kept coming in on the LSU side the line was raised even higher. That continues until the equal mount of money is placed on both sides of the line.

That means little to UGA fans or Football fans who do not gamble, but the end line is a very strong indicator of what the “people in the know” ( their terms, not mine) feel very strongly that LSU will cover the lower numbers. Keep in mind that professional bookmakers make their bets within hours of the opening line as the line that is first posted is the line they want to play.

I love how everyone including the press continues to ask UGA Players and sell us on how deep LSU IS. Who Cares? Depth matters at DL and running back. Any other depth only matters if injuries occur. UGA rotates 7 for 3 on the DL. LSU rotates 8 for 4. UGA has a pro DL and is better than LSU’S. I think Crowell is better than any of LSU’S backs. A rotation of two backs is perfect. I don’t want four backs. Two with 15 to 20 carries is perfect. If you want to talk advantage lets talk QB’s. UGA has one of the best nationally and number one in SEC. LSU has a running back playing QB. If UGA stops LSU’S running game (I think they will) it will be a lot of 3 and outs for LSU. Their QB is done without 200 yards rushing. I hope LSU thinks they will ware down UGA’S deeper and superior DL.

Bottom line, taking LSU at 10 pts is a wise bet according to the odds.. However, that’s just the odds. Playing the percentages. Doesn’t mean that’s how it will play out. Laguna, good points and I would add that I think Murray, except when he has an overthrowing fit here and there, is one of the best QBs in the country. Few come close to his ability to pick a D apart. The problem is protection. Tom Brady can’t throw consistently if he is running for his life. That is the key to me. If our line can protect Murray pretty well, we should put up a lot of points. If they can’t, you can think all the way back to Boise. Murray didn’t have time to throw the whole game. He has learned to cope somewhat, but LSU has the best D we have faced, although Florida’s is excellent and so is SC’s.

There is no doubt that LSU has returned big this year. They’ve had an exceptional year. One of the all time best. Which makes them a good bet and is your point. I’m just saying that UGA is not a normal opponent. They have exceptional talent, which makes the bet dangerous. UGA is unproven, which is one of the reason for the odds, but they have the potential to make this a bad bet. You can’t say that about the majority of LSU’s opponents.

We’ll see on Saturday, of course, and I can’t wait.

This game should be a nice test, probably the first test we’ve had all year, in a sense. I’m alluding to Mark Richt teams being slow starters, or late bloomers (which is a criticism of him as a coach), but it’s also true that Georgia seems to have gotten a substantial amount better late in the season.

I’m talking here about our performances against New Mexico State, and Auburn, and NATS. All three were nice showcases for our team, especially the offense.

Of course, you’ve noticed that our game against Kentucky didn’t quite make the showcase, unless just an ugly win to win the East counts.

Which Georgia team will show up? The team that played ugly against Kentucky, or the team that played Auburn?

I don’t much care which team shows up, as long as the game ends up the same it has in the last 10 contests.

The game will be settled on the field, and our players seem to know they have a legitimate chance of winning.

Can Mark Richt, and Mike Bobo come through for these young guys and do their part with play calling, clock management, decisions such as what to do on 4th down, etc? We’ll see, won’t we.

1969 this year looks a lot like the end of 07, even down to the teams and scores. We beat GT 31-17. Nipped KY, and beat AU pretty soundly. I think that is an interesting point. That Richt, particularly when he has a lot of young talent, brings them along very, very well as the year progresses. Maybe it is good coaching instead of bad at the start. I definitely think we have improved a lot. But, I also have tremendous respect for LSU. They are the ultimate test for just how good the Dawgs have become. And nobody, especially ESPN and SI, knows for sure. It will have to be proven on the field. Do we get blown out like almost everyone except for Bama, or do we make a statement? Should be fun, and regardless of the outcome, we have a whole lot of good young talent, and all true Dawgs have to be proud of this team.

We really can’t lose we get a very good bowl game we won 10 games this year and defeated the dastardly foes from UT, UF,Auburn and Tech and we are SEC East champs ! Hat’s off to CMR and his staff and his team that never quit on him or themselves !! Go Dawgs!

This Georgia team has the chemistry that was needed. Who provided the leadership I don’t know, but somebody grabbed the bull by the horns and has led the way. Many have led behind closed doors and others have led by their actions. Bottom line is that this team plays as a team and it has taken them to a very successful season and it isn’t over.

Real truth, I think Florida can run with anybody. They are probably the fastest team out there. Remember that they were doing well against Alabama when Brantley was knocked out. LSU caught them at the bottom. The only small knock on the Gator D is that they can’t stop big physical backs as well. Their D line is very quick and fast but relatively small. They are still the 10th ranked D in the country, and think of all the Bozos saying Florida stinks! Florida has faced some great teams. Florida’s problem is that they fell to pieces offensively when Brantley went down (understandable when you only have true freshmen backups), and then as the season has worn on, Brantley has forgotten how to throw. They shut FSU down, but Brantley kept hitting FSU DBs in the chest, and it made it hard to win. LSU’s D, I think, has speed, size and they are very physical–balanced. Incidentally, UGA is balanced, too. I think the question is if we can stop really big backs. We didn’t do well against Lattimore, but we have stopped others. They will have to be tough Saturday because LSU will come straight at us a lot.

i feel that our d is going to give up 20 points AT THE MOST. If you watched the alabama game the two quarterbacks got nervous because alabama stopped there rushing attack. If uga stops the run jefferson’s play might cause a few turnovers.
2 things i’m worried about:
1. Giving up a huge play on special teams- Lsu has great special teams with Matheu. We haveplayed better the last few weeks on ppunt and kick coverage. It has to continue
2. Offense moving the ball- Our defense can’t stay on the field the whole game. Even if we don’t score we have to move the ball. Isaiah no subbing out this game. Its the most important of your life. We need isaiah to be effective running the ball. i think he can be since our huge oline is good at run blocking where they can use their size to their advantage. this will open up murray in the passing game.

Everyday i’m feeling better about this game. WE have a shot i’m saying 30%shot. It would be nice if samuel and tyson came back but it doesn’t look like they will

My fear is that LSU injures Murray. I hope Mason is ready. Fairley helped AU win a lot of games by knocking QBs out. As you remember, he was very deadly before and after the whistle. Let’s hope this behavior isn’t spreading to any of our teams. It is hard to distinguish sometimes between tough, physical play, and play that is designed to injure. I saw one of Florida’s DTs pull a Fairley flop on top of Murray this year and I winced, but he got up and kept going.

LSU uses the intimidation factor as a pre-game psych job on everyone. Bama didn’t back down. The Dawgs won’t back down. This UGA team has the mental toughness to not crack under the “we are just better than you are” attitude LSU exudes. And part of that is turnovers and return teams. I haven’t seen many of the games LSU has played this year but looking at the highlights it seems like teams hang with for a while and then cave in after a turnover or a punt/kickoff return. It happened to Ark. They were up 14-0 and then LSU came back at them and they just folded. The kickoff return started the snowball rolling. That said…

The best thing about special teams is that each event is only one play and you always have an escape valve. On kickoffs you just kick it through the end zone. On punts you kick it long and out of bounds. So what if it nets out at 39 yards. It beats the hell out of a momentum shifting return. No way to I give Mathieu any chance to return any kick. Kick it away from him. Aim for the sideline… any thing but allow him a chance to get the Cajuns jumping.

This game might hinge on LSU being arrogant and kicking to Boykin. They won’t kick it away from him. Their punt coverage team is ranked #1 in fewest yards allowed. If the Dawgs remove Mathieu from the equation they will win the special teams war.

The game will be decided by less than 10 points. If the Dawgs play like they can they will win.

God, reading about this game on national sites reminds me of the lead up to Rocky versus Ivan Drago in Rock IV. The national media and LSU fans are giving us absolutely NO chance. I think a big factor in the game that no one has mentioned is Ken Malcome. He is our bruiser. I think he and Crowell should split time. Use thomas on swing passes and reverses. Line him up in slot. I think that’s going to be the deciding factor in the game.

7576DAWG

November 30th, 2011

Malcomb is too good for there not to be a reason why he hasn’t been playing this year. I know some of it was attitude but I think he is prone to fumble at practice and CMR isn’t confident enough in him to trust that he won’t turn the ball over at critical time. Crowell only has 15 to 20 quality run’s in him so someone else is going to have to run the ball about 20 times. It will be interesting how CMR handles it knowing the little guy’s,Thomas and Harden are definitely prone to turn the ball over.

LSU is not intimated either. This is a must game for Georgia. If they lose this thing and especially if it is like the Alabama game in Athens a few years ago, which it could be, then what has all these weak wins proven about Georgia. I think their defense is where they will lose it if they do, the offense is coming around, the defense has not shown maturity in these kind of games. Instead of the defensive coodinator telling Georgia, “a new contract of I am gone”. I am thinking Georgia needs to be telling him a win here or you can take that action somewhere else.

Tyson was hurt on the first play – wasn’t, technically, a ‘chop block’, but it was low and from behind and teams that ‘teach’ that kind of blocking should be labeled as ‘dirty’ – sorry Tech, but if the shoe fits….from what I saw Saturday, Boo Malcome may be our best RB and if he stays healthy, holds onto the ball and given the opportunity, will be our best this Saturday.

I can see the headline in Sunday’s AJC now, ‘Georgia Finally Has Played Somebody’ (followed, I hope, by the sub-head, ‘…And They Beat The Boudin Out Of ‘Em!’. How great will it be if we’re the ones ‘letttin the good times roll’ come Saturday night. I mean Les Miles ‘talked’ LSU’s way into the NC game back in ‘07 when they jumped over us in the rankings to play in the final game….so let’s put him in a position to ‘whine’ his team back into the game this year. We won’t be playing in the NC game, of course, but it’ll be even sweeter if we ‘beat the team that did…or beat the team that beat the team…and beat whoever they send to the Sugar Bowl to face us’?

LSU fan here. Georgia and Coach Richt are first class. I was a young high school coach in Florida and we used to visit Fl. State to clinic with their coaches. Even though I was young and had played football, I knew very little about coaching. Coach Richt never looked down upon that and made himself available. Whenever I left a phone message or sent a letter, he always responded with info I needed. What’s more impressive is he always followed up to make sure everything I needed was sent and explained well enough to implement. My mom’s family is from Blackshear and I’ve always looked upon the Dawgs as my second favorite team. I wish them well Saturday and hope my Tigers are good and fortunate enough to win the game. One win in eleven games should teach you to keep your mouth shut. I am certainly not running my mouth before the GA-FL games every year. You Tech fans need to beat us more than once a decade and maybe even win a bowl game before you have anything to brag about here. I agree. Your team would easily beat down either UGA or Tech. The SEC East shouldn’t be allowed into the playoff game when they’re this bad. The #1 SEC team is now playing the #5 SEC team for the so-called “Championship”.

Is that all you got, some junk about Georgia tek when we are in The SEC Championship Game against # 1 in the nation undefeated, beat 3 top 10 teams LSU who has obliterated the Mark Richt era with their superior results in Les Miles 7 years there – far better than Mark Richt has done here in 11 years.

No comparison.

It got no response but I posted back in the spring how much fun it would be to watch this team this year. My post was based on how focused we were throughout the spring and our attitude, etc. in addition to being much better conditioned.

That focus is evident in the comments published here today. All teams develop their own personality and this team’s was evident months ago. As much fun as this season is and has been, I am just as excited about our future. These guys are proud to be DAWGS, to put on that uniform, to defend our hedges. This is what a TEAM is supposed to perform and look like.

I won’t predict a win Saturday but I will repeat what I posted in March of this year: This team will be fun to watch and will never lose because of lack of effort or attitude. I’m as proud of this bunch as of any team we’ve ever fielded.

And if you’re honest with yourself, and if you saw the game, and if you can remember it IF you saw the game, you know that UGA handed the SC game away on a platter .. this is a much more mature team 3 months later.

Old Coot you sound as if SC beat us by half a hundred. If I recall it was 45-42. Most of their points came on D .(courtesy of our offense) and special teams plus our kicker missed a couple of FG. Not making excuses at all here but that was an exciting game that we lost. IF SC had taken care of bsuiness against Arkansas OR Auburn they would be playing this weekend. Being as great as they are I just can’t understand how SC lost to Auburn. If i recall we played Auburn pretty tight but managed to squeak out a victory. Regardless we took care of the business that needed to be taken care of and SC didn’t. Darn too bad.

Just sayin’, I noticed how mad Coach Petrino got at Coach Les when he kicked that FG in the 4th qtr when LSU was ahead by a mile. The camera showed him shaking his finger at Miles, and they showed the ice cold congrats handshake. I don’t blame Miles. Bama was desperately trying to run it up against Auburn, and Les understands the human pollsters respond to big wins, point-wise. Richt is a gentleman, not even kicking a FG against KY when we were ahead by 9 late; he stopped throwing against AU in the second half, and did the same against NMST late, and I respect him for it. But, I wonder if we had run up a few scores, and whether we might be ranked higher in the human polls now. The funny thing on Petrino’s response is that he certainly appears to run scores up himself. Ark was throwing TD passes on TN in the 4th qtr! They won that by a bigger margin than LSU did. I guess he sees it differently when he is on the receiving end of the pounding? Our hillbilly friends probably appreciate Les spanking Bobby!

“Don’t do that yet, they haven’t hatched”

Bama couldn’t beat LSU in Tuscalooser, but now they think they will on a neutral field. Funny stuff right there.

Well TampaDawg,

As you like to say: At least they’ll be in the game.

@DreamWrecker

Wrong! Dawgs don’t have to score to celebrate. They talk smack when they manage a 1 yard rush.

Respect

Last night I watched part of the Georgia Tech replay of Saturday’s game.

I think someone in the UGA athletic department should put together a tape of the negative and disrespectful comments that were regularly made by the commentators as to UGA. It was, at least to me, quite revealing how little respect is shown for our offense, defense, coaching, and maybe cheerleaders, too!

Of course, we do have quite the opportunity to earn respect this Saturday! Go Dogs!
