Bowl scenarios: It’s anywhere from Sugar Bowl to Chick-fil-A for Dogs

Where is Georgia going to play in a bowl game?

Excellent question, and one that’s impossible to answer at this point. Now if you couch it to ask, where might the Bulldogs go bowling?, we can give that one a go.

Much is going to depend on the outcome of today’s game between Georgia and Georgia Tech, and other rivalry games as well. Suffice it to say, a Bulldogs’ win — which would be their 10th in a row –  puts them in a very favorable position. However, a loss to the Jackets followed by another one to LSU makes Georgia a bit of a problem for the bowl bosses.

Regardless, Georgia should end up in one of these five bowl games:

  • Allstate Sugar Bowl, New Orleans, Jan. 3: The Bulldogs get here only if they beat LSU in the SEC Championship Game. They would be representing the league as SEC champion, then could hang around six days in New Orleans to catch LSU and/or Alabama play in the Allstate BCS National Championship Game on Jan. 9.
  • Capital One Bowl, Orlando, Jan. 2: The Cap One folks have a tough decision — take a 10-2, top-10-ranked Arkansas team or a Georgia team that will be coming off a loss in the SEC championship game. Go ahead and cross off this option if the Dogs lose to Georgia Tech. And even if Georgia beats the Jackets, it still might look like an easy choice for the Razorbacks based on record and ranking. However, economic factors such as travel and attendance make it less obvious. The majority of the fanbase being within easy driving distance could work in UGA’s favor.
  • Outback Bowl, Tampa, Jan. 2: This would seem the most likely destination if the Cap One passes on the SEC loser. But you never know what this volatile bowl selection group might do. They could decide to pick South Carolina on the argument the Gamecocks won head-to-head against Georgia, especially if they can beat Clemson. Auburn could enter the picture with a win over Alabama or Florida with a win over FSU.
  • AT&T Cotton Bowl, Dallas, Jan. 6: Expect a real tug-of-war between the Cotton Bowl and the Cap One for Arkansas. Dallas is a traditional destination for the former Southwest Conference-dwelling Hogs and their fans will certainly travel well there, especially not having been back since 2007. Then again, Georgia hasn’t played there since beating Texas 10-9 in 1984 and a lot of Bulldog fans have expressed interest in going back.
  • Chick-fil-A Bowl, Atlanta, Dec. 31: Lopsided losses to Tech and/or LSU could seriously jeopardize the Bulldogs cachet in the bowl hierarchy. But the SEC now has a “protection system” designed to keep the loser of the SEC title game from slipping too far. By contract, Commissioner Mike Slive can call on any of the non-BCS bowls in the SEC’s alliance and ask them to protect the SEC loser. It’s unlikely Slive would let Georgia slip past the Outback or Cotton. Nevertheless, Chick-fil-A Bowl President Gary Stokan told me himself he would protect Georgia from getting past them.

As you can see, the outcomes of today’s rivalry games will have a profound effect on the bowl scenario as we know it. So you might as well settle in and watch. By Saturday night, the picture should sharpen considerably.

I’m only telling you the truth. Alabama and LSU are, by far, the best two football teams in the nation. I know that people hate the idea of a rematch in the BCSCG, but in this case, resistance is futile.

Trust me on this. Nobody wants a rematch any less than LSU fans. I’d much rather face Oklahoma State.

Does anyone know if the bowl game in Jacksonville if a slip past the game in Atlanta? I have not heard anything about that game at all. A trip back Florida would be a good reward for our players after this year, it looks like the Capone bowl will take Arkansas and who kows with the Cotton and Outback?

What if….

UGA beats LSU
Oklahoma beats Ok State
Va Tech loses to either Va or Clemson
Notre Dame beats Stanford
Auburn beats Alabama

Not probable, but after what we saw last week, it is possible…Then what? Boise St/Houston in the BCSCG? Surely not..

The only two unlikely scenarios in your list are Georgia and Auburn.

i wouldn’t mind seeing us against K-State in the Cotton Bowl. Or maybe Michigan in the one of the Florida bowls. It’d be nice to see someone different. If we were to beat LSU, it would probably be Houston in the Sugar.

Here’s the thing: If Alabama wins today, then they are far and away the best one-loss team out there. You can get as mad as you want, but you can’t really change that simple fact. If Alabama loses to Auburn, then their fans would sound just as silly as did Georgia fans in 2007 arguing that they should be playing in the BCSCG.

Based on the BCS thinking in 2007 when LSU jumped from 5th over a 3rd ranked Ga. team to play in the national championship game because Ga. did not play in it’s conference championship game,Alabama should now be eliminated fom playing for the title. If the BCS makes an exception now they become even more bogus than they already are.

Tampa Gator,

your “what if’’s” give me a good idea. If the sugar falls from the sky, we will obviously need some of it to cook the gator tail we killed a few weeks ago. We have plenty of fat back already with Weiss, but the meat is pretty sour, with the Mushcamp added in .It should cook fast, but really well, for a holiday meal. You really have to watch when you are cooking it though, because it tends to deteriorate with just a little heat added to it. Then it starts to stink, after that.
We can season it nicely though, with just the tight amount of sour grapes from Florida fans since they are abundant this year. We also need to add that touch of envy coming from the swamp at UF..
Really nothing to it. We will just use the Seminole Indian recipe that I understand will be updated today starting about 7:00. They have to be careful not to over cook the gators. Too much fat and the plate is too heavy to PASS around.

Another scenario , Dawgs whip Tech, and by some Miracle they slip past LSU, win the Sugar Bowl against an undefeated Houston team. That would make this a great season ,especially after a 0-2 start. Now for some rain on the Dawg parade. Ole Miss hires Grantham as head coach and Penn State makes CMR a offer he can’t refuse ,to lead the Nittany Lions out of the darkness. So Dawg fans be careful about what you wish for.
Enough of fantasy time just go out today and beat Tech, and it will be a successful season no matter how the LSU game and bowl game turns out.

If the voters bump Bama out of second place, then they won’t play in the Championship Game. It has nothing to do with some nefarious “BCS thinking” or what Kirk Herbstreit says. You Georgia guys are just jealous because you can’t compete on the national stage.

Get over it. You can still beat the Jackets and win the State Title. That should be enough.

Rich Rod was such a big success at Meechigan , he would just come in and clean up in the SEC .He is wear he belongs in a finesse league like the Pac 14. Still think the right Reverend Mark Richt may be on Penn State’s radar.

Mighty early in the morning for some folks to be hitting the bottle today. There are a lot of games to be played before we even know how it all ends. If Bama. and LSU don’t lose down the road, or look bad in a win, they will play for the crystal ball on Jan. 9th. The DAWGS have far exceeded the majority of folks predictions for them back in September. If you are a UGA fan you should just enjoy the success they have had and look forward to the next three games UGA will play. A bowl game of any type is a reward for UGA, where as for teams like Florida and Auburn, that are recipients of a bowl scene that allows half of the FBS teams to get into one.

@Erk Russell’s Dog

RR was never accepted as a “Michigan Man”, but he certainly improved the program that lost to Appalachian State during his tenure. His biggest problem was that the players hated him for trying to make them “work too hard”. He probably wouldn’t have fit in at Georgia for the same reason.

RR and his Spread offense never was a good fit at Michigan, the same team that lost to Appy St. beat Florida in their bowl game. I agree that the Dawgs have looked fat and lazy earlier this year, but if they give Coach Tereshinski enough time he will get the Dawgs in shape.

OK STATE lost to an IOWA STATE TEAM………………………..If BAMA wins, then BAMA is in BSC Championship game

IOWA STATE will end up 7-5 for the year and UNRANKED…………………………………..They will not overcome that.

LSU plkayers have stated that they believe that the only team that may have a chance of beating them is BAMA.

Sugar Bowl picks last in the BCS rotation because the BCS championship is in New Orleans this year.A 12-0 Houston team will be ranked too high to leave out of the Sugar Bowl.Better pull for SO.Miss to beat Houston in their championship game.

LSU can be beat. The AR game yesterday is proof of that and it doesn’t take Bama to do it. The opposing team needs only to play the full 60 minutes because they will be. Ask Bama

Coarch- NO, CMR most certainly does not. UGA could’ve very well did so against AU, but they went ultra conservative against AU, & only ran the ball for the most part in the 2nd half in that game. That game could’ve actually been worse than it was.

I agree that the team most similar to UGA is Arkansas. We have a better defense and they have a better offense, but they most closely resemble UGA. Even thought we have the same record, assuming UGA gets a win in a couple of hours over tech, they deserve to be ranked higher as one of their losses came to #1 LSU.

I would expect about the same result when UGA plays LSU… keeping it close until about midway through the 3rd, but you NEVER KNOW. A couple of turnovers, a special teams play, and an upset is a possbility.

I’ll tell you, if it’s not the Sugar Bowl I’d rather go to the Peach Bowl over all of the others. The BCS has made all of the bowl games but one meaningless, anyway. If your not in the BCS Championship Game, who gives a crap what Bowl you go to. It means nothing…which is sad. The old system was much better. It sure made for an interesting and meaningful New Year’s Day.

Not really sure why everyone assumed that Arkansas was a legit #3 team. Saying that UGA is the 4th best team in the conference is a bit of a stretch. Ark’s blowout losses to bama and lsu, close call against a horrible ole miss team, should have lost to Vandy. I think UGA matches up nicely with Ark. I will take a good defense over good offense any day. Plus, UGA’s offense is better than Ark’s defense. I don’t know if UGA can beat LSU, but I think they can put up a much better fight than Arkansas, and score more points than Bama.

ZERO chance of a “lopsided” loss to Tech. In fact, there’s almost NO CHANCE of a loss of any kind to Tech. But I guess I understand why the AJC would feel the need to placate butthurt gnat fans by pretending that it’s a possibility.

The biggest advantage that UGA has over Arkansas is that Bobby Petrino is not their coach. When the Weasel realizes the SEC west is too tough look for him to jump to the ACC or Big 8 ,10 ,12 or whatever they are.
