Georgia has already displayed recognitiion of its 2011 SEC Eastern Division championship on the wall of the team meeting room at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall. (AJC)
UPDATE (6:20 P.M.) Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said he expects both Carlton Thomas and Isaiah Crowell to play at tailback. . . .
ATHENS — The question posed to Georgia coach Mark Richt was a simple one. His answer was not.
Richt was asked what the Bulldogs’ tailback rotation might look on Saturday against archrival Georgia Tech. In a nutshell, he either legitimately does not know or is not saying.
“I don’t know the answer to that,” Richt said at his weekly news conference Tuesday at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall. “We have to sort through it. It’s just not cut and dry. I don’t know who is going to start. I don’t even know who’s going to play 100 percent. But we’re working our way through it and we’ll know more by the end of the week. I don’t know what I’ll announce, but right this second I do not know exactly how it’s going to come out.”
There are a number of issues facing the Bulldogs at their prestige position:
So the rotation, Richt said, will be determined in practice this week.
“I want to see them practice,” he said. “I guess competition is the hold up, deciding through competition who deserves to start, who deserves to play.”
Despite its many issues Georgia has had this season, it has managed to run the ball fairly effectively throughout. The Bulldogs are fourth among SEC teams in rushing at 185.4 yards per game and they’ve had three different players bust the 100-yard barrier.
That will be especially important against the ball-hogging Yellow Jackets.
“We always like to run the football,” Richt said. “But you have to have backs who can do it and some backs who are willing to hang on to the football in the process. The thing about this game is every possession really is pretty crucial.”

Now all Dawg fans are worried silly.
I think UGA will do what they Gators did against us with Brantley.
Have Crowell warm up and go in early to the locker room before the game. Then when they announce the starters you have Harton run out there at RB. However, Crowell actually starts the game.
The Gators did that crap with Brantley acting like he could not start as he did not even run out on to the field as starters were announced……………..but he started the game with like 10 passes in the 1st 12 plays catching UGA’s defense off guard.
There will be alot of “gamesmanship” going on for sure.

Sounds like it will be Harton and Malcome carrying the rock. Maybe they will give the Brandon’s a few more carries, but really, they are not ready to take the pounding of carrying the football 10+ times a game. Murry is going to need to play much better than he did against Kentucky for us to win. A big part turns on which GT team shows up to play – the one who beat Clemson or the team that lost to Miami and UVA. My guess is the loser team. If we can get up a couple of scores in the first half, they are likely to fold.

We just need guys who can run hard and fast between the tackles, hold on to the ball, and get 4-5 yards a carry. We have to run it well enough to set up the play action or this could turn into a stressful game very quickly.

I think we’ll be fine at tailback. We had our fumble game last week and I’m sure they are working on that this week. And like he said, we are averaging 185 yards per game without a clear cut starter. And who is to say Thomas will not be back this week. All he did was get caught with a girl in his room. I say, give him a metal.

They’ll figure it out. Tech doesn’t have a very good run defense. Actually they remind me of UGA about two years ago prior to and at the beginning of the change to the 3/4 . Run it up the middle because unlike UGA which has goten a couple of hogs to clog it up, Tech doesn’t have the players to run the 3/4, especially in the middle. Not sure why they are still trying to run it.

It sounds to me like Coach Richt wants to start Harton, but the two lost fumbles make that difficult. He may just be making a point with both of them, since we usually play two or three TBs. I’m glad some of our walk-ons and guys who never thought they would see a play in a UGA uniform got some experience against NMST. We will have to use them if another injury or more fumbling occurs.

If UGA’s B- defense and C+ offense show up, they should have little problem beating Tech. If the offense plays Tech like they played against Kentucky, the defense needs to take their B+ to A- game to Atlanta to win. If UGA’s A+ defense shows up, Tech won’t stand a chance.

Just line up in a shotgun every time and let Murray throw it 40 times, and let’s see what happens. He has 28 TDs, and 2446 yards, and much of that was against nation leading Ds like the Gators and Carolina. And we didn’t have some of our best receivers available. We are deep, so give LSU something different to think about. Tech supposedly has trouble with passing D…

There are a number of questions that I would like to ask Georgia’s head coach about his offensive strategies and how he uses his offensive personnel. A number of these questions would be instantaneously cleared up if he would answer the question why there are two starting players on his team that wear the same number, #1.
I find this assignment of numbers expecially perplexing in games in which their numbers are called to play offense. I also wonder what the Defensive Coordinator think of this practice?

Smith and Crowell are never on the field at the same time, so they can have the same number. If Smith is running the ball, it’s only because Crowell isn’t playing. Otherwise Smith is on defense and it’s a moot point.

He certainly looks like an SEC rb and I have wanted to see him get some of the carries that Harton and Thomas has been getting simply because they don’t have the size to run the ball between the tackles. Actually Thomas has looked pretty good, but can anyone be sure he won’t get himself suspended? Quote from the AJC:
Georgia Tech ranks last among ACC schools in graduation rates for football and men’s basketball programs, according to figures released Tuesday by the NCAA.
Georgia ranks near the middle of the SEC in those sports.
List of SEC grad rates:
Vanderbilt 89%
Georgia 68%
Florida 67%
Alabama 67%
LSU 67%
Mississippi State 64%
Auburn 63%
Kentucky 63%

From AJC June 9, 2011:
“Georgia Tech’s football and men’s basketball teams posted the biggest improvements in APR scores in information released on Wednesday.
The APR, or Academic Progress Report, measures the eligibility, retention and graduation of athletes on every Division I team in all sports. It is designed to serve as a predictor of future graduation success. The APR scores released are four-year rates based on the 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic years.
The football team’s score increased for the third consecutive year, reaching 993, the fourth-highest score nationally and tops in the conference, according to the ACC. The team’s multi-year average of 967 is tied for the third-best score among ACC teams, behind Duke and Miami.

Interesting game. Both teams have played very well at times, both have stunk. So it all depends on who shows up to play. One thing UGA has going for it – the offensive line has come on a bit and is opening up holes. And the UGA defense really is a major improvement over last year.
If the two teams play to form, I think Georgia get the nod. But it’s so hard to tell with this game and that’s what makes it – for me at least – one of the best games of the year to watch.
Luckily, I’m not a big fan of either team. I moved here from Arkansas and it’s hard to change teams, even after all these years in Atlanta. I root for both UGA and Tech usually but am not in the fanatical fan category … so much so that I have no idea who I hope wins. Usually, in this game, I root for the team that’s behind.
I think it’s fairly apparent that UGA is the strongest of the two but I honestly think Tech has the best coach of the two. So it ought to be a lot of fun.

LOL, right Chris.
Put it this way, the average SAT at Tech is about 150 points higher. And even with superior students, we have a lower graduation rate for all students. Those kids usually transfer to UGA or GSU.

Institute, we are talking about football players, not the whole school, and remember that neither SAT scores nor grades predict success perfectly. Just like having 4-5 star recruits to Tech’s 2-3 stars doesn’t guarantee success Saturday. I would be willing to bet that over the last 10 years, Georgia’s football players have a much higher average salary than Tech’s for the first 10 years out of college. Before you get excited, just type in Stafford, Moreno and Green’s numbers and see what that does to the averages.

Reference the article by Chip, Bobo just needs to earn his $$$. Come up with a game plan utilizing the fullbacks, Boykin and Smith, along with the servicable tailbacks we have. Keep things loose for the passing game. No one player, or person for that matter is bigger than this program. I’m sick and tired of the controversy surrounding the tailbacks. I say recruit a blue chipper that’s in the mold of a Richardson, Samuel, that has a proven track record. IC may become the greatest ever, but I seriously doubt it.

Institute, I was mostly harassing you for amusement, but you did make one comment that needs a serious rebuttal. You implied that the reason GT’s football grad rates are horrendously lower than UGA’s is that the school is so much harder. I would agree it is harder in most majors. But which school is using the kids? You know your school is too difficult for reasonable numbers to graduate, as you admitted, yet you use these kids for their football skill (and the millions that brings your school) and then you discard them without degrees? That doesn’t sound too nice to me. I wouldn’t pursue that line anymore.

So there we have it. Two schools based in the fine state of Georgia and one argues that the other is so vastly superior to the other in academics. But alas, there is proof out there from a third party that though GT rates higher (and this is assuming of course that you put stock in a college degree being the key to success .. and if you want to argue that it does, I will eat your lunch and laugh at you while I do), they are not so vastly higher than UGA that the phrases “handing out diplomas” and “worthless degree” actually apply.
http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities
So, if you really want to have a debate, please bring data to the table. I have, again, admitted that UGA fell short of GT on this list, but to discredit a university who is listed in the top 100 schools in the nation academically is truly ignorant. But again, the key to success in a college degree? Hardly. Carry on soldiers!

I wondered why the big white running back with the unusual name has been kicked to the curb. His stats were as good or better than Harton’s. But let’s appeal to the record and let it speak. Crowell is apparently, not durable enough to be an SEC back and he fumbles. Tomas and Harton are too small to take an SEC “hit” without coughing up the ball. Malcome … apparently some hidden problems and fumbles. And then there is Samuel. He’s big enough but has only used that size in a couple of games in four years. So …. let’s try “whitey”.What could it hurt?

Dawg 48, when CMB tries to run the clock out, we almost always stall, which is followed by a momentum shift. Auburn and NMST were notable exceptions, but generally when UGA is lighting up the pinball machine, CMB needs to pour it on until it is way out of sight imho. He has his moments where he looks like a genius, and that is why the momentum shift is frustrating. Let the O amass some stats when it is going well.

Heard Jenkins has asked to get a carry or two. That would be interesting.
I also find it distressing that people are so down on Malcome. He is a Freshman and was a 4 star recruit. He is listed at 6′, 226 and has good speed. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him start carrying some of the load when we need to run up the middle. All three Brandon’s are fast but small for running between the tackles. Crowell and Malcome do fine there.
Also, for those questioning Crowell’s durability, compare his per game stats with Lattimore’s from his freshman year. There pretty close and everyone loved Lattimore last year.

You Dawg fans who keep bashing Tech enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.
UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.
Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a drunken party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is worthless.
Jan Kemp exposed the obscene sleazy crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or character.
The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.
So keep on posting your scores all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old janitorial job back before your unemployment checks stop coming.

Here are some of cpj’s comments
“They’ve got a heck of a team,” Johnson said. “Won nine in a row, SEC East champs. I am willing to bet that as a whole UGA athletes are just as solid in the classroom as your guys. The NCAA does their assessment of each program, and UGA appears to do fine on their scores. I may have missed something (very possible), but I think the NCAA has given UGA a higher score both years since they have stepped up their reviewing process. Just from watching the GT/VT game, I think Murray will have a big game anyway.
It is great to hear that Samuel may be ok for the SECCG…he is the kind of back they will need against LSU/UA.

I know I’ll catch grief for this but I believe the Jackets will be held to under 150 yards on the ground. Their threat in the air is negligable and lately the first contact has done a good job of making the tackle. There will be a swarming defense and at least 3 fumbles in this game by Tech. That’s based on everything I’ve seen but I’ve also seen enough to know they can end up being a spoiler and leave me shaking my head. Go Dogs!

This game is more of a nuisance than a meaningful game for many us Dawg fans. A victory is expected, a lost is as embarrassing, and unfortunately the game is too often too close. I do not understand why some of us mark this game on the calendar. I think I speak for many UGA fans when I say we would not miss this game anymore than the Clemson game if it were to end.

Let’s get this straight.
The cutblock technique that Tech coach Paul Johnson uses is very dangerous, but not illegal.
It’s simply a technique that teams stoop down to when they can’t really block their opponent.

Can somebody please tell teh running backs to carry the ball over their chest muscle. On the ribs, the D can punch up or down and the ball easily comes out. Tiki Barber fumbled for NYG 24 times in 5 seasons, then he discovered if you carry the ball over the pectoral muscle, there is no where for it to go. Only 1 fumble the next 2 or 3 yrs. Knowshon, Ingram and Richardson do this and almost never fumble. ANyone know the runningbacks or the coach?

We can’t cont to run tiny toon running backs and expect their little short arms to holdon to the ball… They look like little T- Rex’s out their….

Amazing video of a high school senior from Columbia TN who kicks the ball dead straight 75-80 yards in the air. He was successful on 54 of 54 attempts this season….100%. Now he needs a college team.

RABID DAWG 84———————What the heck are you talking about. You sure as heck don’t know. That’s not how you carry a football. The nose is securely tucken in the armpit of the arm carrying the ball with your hand around the opposite nose of the balll, pulled snuggly against your upper chest area (including ribs). When you are expecting close contact, both arms are used.
The fumbles I saw were due to a lapse in concentration. Initally these guys were carrying the ball correctly, but they allowed the ball to lose contact with their body and got sloppy at the “end of their runs”. That is something that needs to be coached.

I’m thinking this little back we’ve been playing could be OK for beating Tech. He’s fast and a pretty good runner. If Thomas plays, and Bobo say’s he will, I rest Crowell. Murray , if on, will light Tech up.

And another thing concerning you Aaron Murray critics. I’ll kiss your a$$ on Peachtree Street if you can name a QB that didn’t have a bad game or two or three in their career. I would rather have this kid at quarterback in the 4th qtr down by 3 with 2 minutes on the clock than anybody in the country. You can take the STATS and smoke ‘em in your crack pipes.. Johnny Unitas didn’t do it pretty eitha’ but he won ball games with poise and guts…………and that’s what Murray does. Along the way Johnny U amassed a few stats that lasted for a while, but that’s not what he was playing for. He played to win. By one point or on hundred….it doesn’t matter.

North ave faithful……………….Both fan bases have people we are not proud of. I want to beat Tech, but don’t hate them. The feelings of hate always come a little stronger from Tech IMO, but there is plenty to go around. I have Tech friends, and they will tell you we just don’t get the players Georgia gets, so the Dawgs will always have the edge. Johnson keeps it close and does a good job. I don’t care for the man, but I don’t hate him.

Delbert D. ————————If you read these BLOGS very often get used to it…………the closest, most of the people on here, have been to a football field, is the front row. They don’t know anything about football. They’re just fans. But every football team is greatful to have them.
My grandmother (during New Years day bowl games back in the ’60’s and 70’s), bless her heart, used to ask me and my dad why the kickoff return man always ran toward the biggest crowd of opposing players. That used to give us a big laugh. And we would explain that it was the other way around. The opposing players were running to the football. That’s pretty much how someone who has never played the game looks at it. Nothing against them, it’s just that they don’t know.

I dont know why everyone is so hard on Boo Malcome. He showed to be a SEC-type back in the 9 carries he had. Sure he fumbled his 1st carry but he still ran the ball hard the other 8 carries. Everyone seems to love Harton but he is just TOO small for the SEC. thats why he fumbled 3 times and lost 2 of them while getting 23 carries. he cant hold the ball because the forcce of an SEC hit is too much for him to handle. I think Richt should give Malcome more carries than Harton this week cause our offense works better with Malcome in there. Defense dont even bite on the play action when Harton is in there because they dont fear him. Everyone on UK’s defense was foaming out the mouth at a chacne to get a highlight hit on Harton because he’s so little. it was obvious that Richt wanted to make sure that Harton got 100 yds rushing because he didnt allow him to against NMSU so thats why he got most of the carries. I hope he dont do that this week because GT offense is better than UK and they can beat us if Richt dont play his best players (depending on whoever suits up)

BTG Mike———————Thanks for agreeing with me, your description is good. The ball might touch a rib, but the pressure point is on the nipple. The elbow angle is 90 degrees with our fumblers and the ball is by their side. The elbow angle should be much more acute and higher up, against teh pectoral. There is no where for the ball to go unless you are knocked out. Murray also needs to tuck it immediately when he runs, defenders behind him have caused fumbles already.

If you can’t trust a player to follow the rules he does not need to be on the team. Knowing the rules and breaking them intentionally is stating to the other players you are not concerned being a team member, your concern is self. This ruins a team. I love the Dawgs, but college football has become more important than education. I suppose we can go to the Garcia grading system. In the classroom you will have at least 5 opportunities to fail the class, in football you can have small failures and still be part of the team. Just hope and pray all of the players don’t do the same infraction at the same time. Oh, that wouldn’t be a problem, we would just look over that as it was a team effort.

Ken Malcome could be the man. He is about 6′1″ and weighs around 210 or 215 and whne hit, he moves the pile two yds. . He is a solid, but not spectacular back. Fumbles need to go but if he can grind on them and help Muarry set up the play actions with credibility, then if the weather is fine, we should do ok.

CPJ is on the HOT SEAT and that sort of explains his shot at UGA fans. He feels the pressure and he knows he must handle UGA to keep the faith over at the TECH FUND offices. He has rec’d phone calls with “votes of confidence” from prominent GT alums for two weeks now on the UGA game.
He must win some game that will project him AND HIS SCHEME as relevant beyond a Clemson game or ( UGA in 08) for him to be considered worthy. It is what it is. Hence, the nervous shot on the radio toward UGA fans. Besides, he grew up in NC and that IS WALMART country.
Lots of GT/UGA golfing groups are gathering this week and we talk. We know. We are older UGA/GT alumni and we are in THE KNOW.
Big game upcoming. Wrod is that if UGA wins this game, but loses in the DOME, we enjoy the Cotton Bowl, WIn em both and we are Sugar Bowl bound.
GT’s bowl??? Belk Bowl IF they win vs UGA.

A view of opposing QBs this year
November 25th, 2011
11:28 am
Never in my 45+ years of viewing Qbs vs UGA D. teams have I seen the first ANDsecond team QBs get up like a prize fighter, stunned and cross eyed after taking a sack.
Alec O and Jarvis Jones and Gathers, Gilliard and Garrison Smith and Abry Jones and Tyson really bring it on the QBs. AU’s and KY’s and NM State’s and several others, like MSU and Ole Miss and UT QBs …………… ALL got up slowly and shaking their heads to avoid spewing on the field.
THIS is why I think UGA can dominate …………………IF UGA brings it on D. That pitch point for GT will be very painful for T Washignton and his pitch man back. Fumbles will take place for quick 6 TDs for UGA.
