Richt: ‘It’s hard to win nine in a row — period.’

What players and coaches on both sides were saying after Georgia’s 19-10 victory over Kentucky (transcript provided by UGA):

Georgia coach Mark Richt:

“I left the South Carolina game [when Georgia was 0-2] encouraged. I wasn’t encouraged that we lost, but I was encouraged that as we moved forward that we could win. I knew we had good leaders, good players and good coaches. We had to protect the ball and get after it. It’s hard to win nine in a row, especially when you need every single one to get back to the Dome. I’m just so proud of them right now.”

“Today was definitely a team victory. Everybody had to do their part. I thought the special teams played extremely well. The offense made enough plays and the defense did their thing.”

“Brandon Harton had to come through for us. Even though the ball came out a few times, he had over 100 yards. And Ken (Malcome) did a few things. Overall, the tailbacks protected pretty good. As the game went on, they made some plays.”

“Our defense stoned them again. Twenty-three yards net [rushing], that’s pretty fantastic. They didn’t throw that well either. Our defense played lights out I thought.”

“I am so proud of the guys for winning the SEC East. Guys could have quit, pointed fingers and found a way to fall apart. But they didn’t do that. Last season was pretty horrible by record, but the players never gave up on the coaches and the coaches never gave up on the players. We maintained our unity. That’s what carried us through the offseason and carried us through the early part of this year.”

“Kentucky played hard. We missed some opportunities, but we kept fighting. I’m glad there was not a lot of drama at the end.”

“You take it one game at a time, one play at a time, one practice at a time. It’s hard to win nine in a row — period. I’m just thankful that we did.”

Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray:

“It’s a victory. We didn’t play great, but it’s great to get back to Atlanta. We’re excited. We have our game at Georgia Tech first, but we’re definitely blessed [to be back in the SEC Championship game] this year. It’s a great feeling.”

“We just weren’t connecting [today], and you’re going to have those games. We just fought through it. The defense played great and we’re just happy to get out of it with a win.”

Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones:

“We knew they would come in with some confidence and that they were going to give it their all. Last time they were here they beat us, so we knew they were coming to play. We just came to battle and stepped up. “

“After the beginning of the season we were a little down, but you just have to keep fighting, and that’s what we did. Now we’re headed back to Atlanta, and it’s a really good feeling.”

Georgia safety Bacarri Rambo:

“It’s feels so good. The last time Georgia made it to the SEC championship I was in ninth grade, so it’s a great feeling. We put in a ton of work in the off-season and pre-season and it’s all paying off.”

Georgia cornerback Brandon Boykin:

“I’m feeling great. This is what I came back to do. It’s like a fantasy. As a senior, to win on senior day and to win the SEC East is a great feeling.”

Kentucky coach Joker Phillips:

“I am proud of this team and how they fought. A lot of people knew how much this week meant for Georgia, and no one talked about what we were playing for. We’re playing for pride, our university and an extra win. The game that this team played proved they played for each other as well. I am proud of them.”

“I said at half time that our defense had a lot of wins today. They forced some field goals instead of touchdowns that kept us in the game. It was good to see some young guys come up and make some plays. We had some guys who haven’t practiced lately and really came through with some good plays for us today. It was probably the best game this defense has played this year. We didn’t get pushed around, and we have seen Georgia push some really good teams around. I don’t think that they pushed us around.”

“We made some plays in the first half. We proved that we could move the ball on any defense that we face. We couldn’t get the run game started in the second half because of some of the schemes Georgia ran, but I am proud of the way these guys fought for each other out there today. No one can say we didn’t fight.”

“It’s hard to play against a defense that is as good as Georgia. This is one of the best defenses in the conference. We’ve seen Georgia hold some good teams to just a few points. It’s a tough to play against a team with great personnel, great schemes and athletic players.”

Kentucky wide receiver Brian Adams:

“There’s a lot of excitement coming back here to play. Athens is only 45 minutes from my house [in Gainesville], and it was really awesome for me to play here. I wish we had a different result, but I’ll remember this for a long time.”

“I think we are a lot better than we’ve been showing this year. It’s been frustrating. We have one game left, and we are going to come out and continue to play hard.”

Kentucky offensive guard Stuart Hines:

“It’s tough to deal with. It’s really tough to go out like this without going to a bowl game my senior year.”

Kentucky tailback Raymond Sanders:

“We never quit. We wear the wrist bands that say ‘never, never,’ and we finish ‘never, never’ with ‘never give up.’ I’m proud of my teammates. We played well today and never gave up. I want to congrautale Georgia and those guys over there on winning the East. Their ‘D’ is good and made plays when they needed to, and we didn’t execute well enough.”

Kentucky cornerback Randall Burden:

“After seeing what they did last week to Auburn, everyone thought they would run it down our throats all game. We focused on the game plan and played really hard today. We have seven more days together as a team. We are going to come out and play for pride.”

Stanford. Hogwash out there in the land of fruit and nuts where no 1 watches college football and no one cares about it. Pac-12 without 1 single good football team. Take Oregon last year. They beat 1 team all season long, and that team beat no 1. Stanford. Pitted them against Auburn who had 7 wins over teams who ended up Top 25. Bama. Bama and Stanford. No bloody wonder you didn’t want to fess about that group of misfitted teams for 1 child to root for. Bama fans do NOT root for Stanford.

Wait.

Georgia tek ?

You mean the team who is on NCAA PROBATION (with Alabama) and back-to-back NCAA PROBATION in football, Georgia tek. Seriously, child, Georgia tek is 1-9 vs our coach, and you run in here to say what now ? That we haven’t ONLY BEAT CUPCAKES ?

You got that right.

We beat Georgia tek like a drum. CUPCAKE.

I think the 1-4 and 3-2 games are worth CONSERVATIVELY $ 50 million payout each to the NCAA to sanction having it’s 1st Division 1-A FBS NC, ever.

Of course, without any numbers, you attack what I worked out long ago to say at this type of a discussion.

There are 420 student-athletes per school. There are 120 Division 1-A FBS schools. 50,000 student-athletes. $ 100 million is EXACTLY PRECISELY TO THE PENNY $ 2,000 each.

Geez Louise.

Who is the loss # 3 for UGA this season.

Duh.

Duh.

I will not lower myself to answer that AGAIN. When I already in this blog to which you REPLIED TO ME, said who the 3rd loss is.

You cannot possibly be a fan of Stanford and Georgia tek. I have my BBA degree with 3.88 GPA.

And, you CANNOT ON YOUR OWN, figure out who UGA loses to for loss # 3, I predicted in here a year ago now for this season.

Have you EVER posted on the UGA blog in your LIFE ?

I don’t think my estimate is off at all. I would do research. I would say it correctly. It’s what I do. Understand the competitive advantage being certified on my company’s products, and then understanding all my competitors, each – completely. Then, use my education and present the reason why our solution is the one I recommend. If you have a different number than 420, I would be greatly appreciative of your research to show me. Then, I will ask the TV funds of 1-4 3-2 distrubuted to the NCAA be enough to pay that, since I think the kids need the 2 grand. I had to work, go to college, and be a walk-on. My days were full. Wouldn’t trade them for anything. See Bill King’s blog this season about college days for my post.

Kool-aid,
It seems to me that the entire collegiate world would be better if prospective athletes were required to be students first. It seems that some scholar athletes are not really college material. As a reference, do you remember Pulpwood Smith?
Furthermore, there is a young man from the Atlanta area who played D-3 football (non-scholarship), ESPN academic all American, who is now in med school at UVA. This is the way it should be.

CROW-A-LOT in here,

Reuben Houston is a college student-athlete.

Georgia tek student-athlete, who by the way, PLAYED ALMOST THE ENTIRE GAME vs UGA

AFTER

he admitted having 92 lbs of DRUGS in the van he was in with his child on his lap, taking the drugs to where he KNEW they could be sold. When the Georgia tek campus police, Fulton County, City of Atlanta, State of Georgia Patrol, GBI and FBI surrounded the van, he jumped out and ran. Then, the AJ-C interviewed him. Where he ADMITTED ALL THIS. Then, Georgia tek PLAYED HIM IN THE NEXT GAME AGAINST US ANYWAY, the WHOLE ENTIRE GAME.

Georgia tek still LOST.

Georgia tek, your team, does NOT graduate their student-athletes.

UGA graduates FAR BETTER than Georgia tek our Student-Athletes, even if we lose to LSU by a wide margin.

420 Scholarships to college each 120 FBS school.

Title IX is ALREADY FACTORED IN DA.

ALL student-athletes who today are on Scholarship say that they cannot get by on just the Scholarship. You pay them ALL. All sports the extra $2,000. You fund it with the +1 alone. Those 1-4 and 2-3 games will fund the $ 100,000,000 required, easily. TV contracts are WAY UP. Going higher every year. $ 19-$24 million now for these STUPID little itty-bitty games such as the weenie-bowl between the 2 non-qualifiers last season in the BCS bowl. Easily worth TWICE THAT.

Somebody forgot to tell Kentucky they were playing Georgia and it was a football game and not a basketball game they were playing. My greatest fears came true on saturday, how do they get up to play Kentucky?
Like Georgia was in a deep sleep. Multiple turnovers, couldnt stop the run and they were getting yards from passing. Then the 2nd half came. Like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde team.
Tell you that our Defense has saved the Offenses butts alot this year. With Branden Smith, Boykin, Rambo, Commings, Joneses and LB’s and front 4.
They keep getting better and better as the year goes on. Our offense has played like a roller coaster. QB making bad decisions, Isiah Crowell getting a hang nail and is sidelined. He might have been the Number 2 RB in the nation but i see that Georgia has 2 other RB’s with as much potential and not so injury proned.
Suck it up Crowell , get taped up and get tougher.
Im sorta glad that AJ Green is not here this year cause i dont think we’d get to see all the talent we have with recievers.
Im glad to see Marlon Brown starting to develope as a WR as we knew he would. Cant say our Offense has improved as much as our Defense has but the offensive line needs to continue getting better. Thats the whole foundation of our offense, the line.
Well you got a chance to make it 10 in a row, which record will be very hard to break after a dismal start. Not gonna sugar coate it like Richt has but do i think Georgia can finish the season out with 10 in a row?
Yes but this game will AGAIN depend on our Defense more.
Do i think we can go to Atlanta and beat LSU, or Alabama or maybe even Arkansas? Doubtful but is attainable.
If its LSU, this is what i think. Player against player i think we have more talent. I think our Defense is better than LSU’s Defense. Our corners, our Front 4 certainly are. Comes down to stupid penalties and turnovers here.
LSU and Alabama has the edge going to the Head Coaches, Big edge against our OC Bobo. Better than our Special Teams. Punting game goes to us but place kicking goes to LSU and Alabama.
No one expected Georgia to win 9 in a row, less going to the SEC Championship game. But that shouldnt be on Georgia’s mind right now.
Ga. Tech a formidable opponent wants to end their season on a high note and isnt gonna be happy about being a 14 point underdog. Neither was Kentucky. They know all Georgia’s stats and know bout our run defense and tends on running the ball down our throats to embarass us.
I hope that none of the Georgia players say anything negative about Tech and not give them any ammunition to build on. Just go out there and leave everything on the field. No breaking team rules yet again.
This will tell you how good a team you are. They got home advantage, Inner-state rivals, ACC vs SEC, being an underdog by 14 pts, playing a higher ranked opponent, breaking Georgia’s streak, and bragging rights.
Look at Oklahoma’s game, Clemson, Oregon, Oklahoma States games and they were upset. That gonna be you too? This isnt no walk over team, no for sure game, they got something to prove to their fans, friends and families.
Be a great team? Win all 3 games then come back, be a good team then you’ll just beat Tech, be an up-n-down team then lose the next 2 games. Its how you finish is what counts. Is 9 games enough? Beat Ga. Tech then you’ll get a second chance and possibly play the Number 1 team in America and show everyone how great a team you are by beating them.

“UGA will not come out flat after the easy win over Auburn last week. Kentucky has a pretty poor defense as it is and now they have lost two of their starters to boot. Depending on how much yardage Crowell gets in the first half and how many hits he takes, we could see him get all 179 yards he needs today. They don’t appear at Kentucky to have an answer to a runner and how to stop him, and Murray should also get at least 3 first half touchdowns it will be a lot like a tough scrimmage for UGA. The best part is, we can rest a lot of starters for the game, after the first half”

Excuse me ? No 1 thought we’d lose any of these 10 cupcake games in a row, not 1 single 1 of the 10 in a row ranked in the AP Poll Top 25 today. As for your musings that we can beat LSU, no we cannot. They are a complete team. They have no holes. We are thin across the board, as you might well expect with 29 players not playing against KY who Mark Richt gave Scholarships to to do just that. And, by the way, Aaron Murray is not our best player this year. No way. He still has not beat 1 single solitary team in his entire career who ends up in the AP Poll Top 25, and there is not 1 of them in it this morning, either.
