Georgia’s Todd Grantham focusing on Kentucky, not contract extension

ATHENS — Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said Tuesday he’s focusing on nothing this week but preparing his unit for Kentucky’s offense and leaving contract negotiations to his agent.

Grantham has 14 months remaining on a three-year contract he signed to become Georgia’s defensive coordinator in January of 2010. His annual salary of $750,000 ranks among the highest in the country for assistant coaches.

Grantham’s agent/attorney, Michael Harrison of Stevenson Ranch, Calif.,  told the AJC on Sunday that Grantham wants a contract extension. Harrison said he has already “gotten inquiries” from some NFL teams about the possibility of Grantham returning to that league and that he has “gotten feelers” indirectly from colleges gauging Grantham’s interest in becoming a head coach. Ultimately, however, he said Grantham wants to remain in Athens.

Grantham was asked about his agent’s comments on Tuesday.

“You hire people to do a job for you and I let him handle that part of it,” he said. “My focus is on getting the defense to play well and getting us ready for the Kentucky game and getting ready to win the SEC East, truthfully.”

Grantham’s defense has climbed to No. 4 in the nation statistically as the Bulldogs have won eight straight games. A win over Kentucky on Saturday will clinch a berth in the Dec. 3 SEC Championship Game in the Georgia Dome.

Grantham, 45, admitted he would like to become a head coach one day. But he said playing in the title game is dominating his thoughts at the moment.

“I think everyone wants to become a head coach,” he said. “First of all, I have a very good job. I was excited to come here because of the vision I had about what I felt you could do with the type of players you can get at the University of Georgia. I’m very excited to be here. Truthfully, I just focus on every situation that’s coming up. For instance, after I leave here I’m going to a third-down meeting to figure out how we’re going to get off the field on third down and then what we’re going to have to do to win the game this week.

“We’re in a championship game this week. There’s a lot of time, energy and study that has to go into each week that honestly you don’t have time to focus on anything like that. You just focus on the next task at hand.”

If Auburn can pay Gus Malzahn 1.5 million to be OC at Auburn. UGA can pay Grantham that much to stay at UGA.

I agree that UGA should give Grantham a significant raise. If he wants to be a head coach, as the article states, he will eventually get promoted or he will leave. But UGA should be able to pay him enough to stay away from the Mississippi’s of the world like AUB did with Malzahn/Vanderbilt.

Look…I played football at the highest level…Coach Grantham is focused and dedicated to taking care of his task. If the right opportunity is presented to him to take another step to secure his future….then we would all do the same thing..make the right decision for his family…..

He will be presented many top coaching opportunites.

I belive him totally that he is working this week to find a way to shut down KY.offense and then get this defense ready to beat Tech!…Just the guy I want to lead the “G” Defense Team!

If McGarity is going to give Richt an extension, he may as well extend Grantham’s contract to equal that of Richt’s contract in terms of years. So far as a raise goes, bump him up a hundred grand and if next year’s defense shows the same amount of improvement as this year’s, raise him to a million. UGA can afford it. Grantham looks like he’s earning his money.

Chip,

As always, you’re doing a great job with your coverage of our beloved Dawgs.

Grantham will definately get rewarded in his contract negotiations as he has molded this defense into a top 5 defense in college football. He’s looking forward to being possibly the highest paid coordinator on a high profile team in the most powerful conference in FBS football, if this season plays to it’s potential.

His defense is really starting to peak now and I see them being able to hang with any offense in the country if they play smart and physical.

I believe Grantham plan is to stick around long enough to win a NC because his stock will then present him with desirable options as far as becoming a head coach at an up and coming program rather taking a position at a lower tier school. I do believe that part of his taking this job was that he has seen and did envison the type of talent that he would have to work with. Defense wins championships. Period.

Pay him after the season and he could possibly coach the best defense in the country next year with the returning talent and the Dream Team II class coming in. It could be the greatest possibility for a NC and a great foundation for the next coach.

I’m not drinking the Kool-Aid, just gin and juice.

Since giving up 80 points in the 1st two games this year, the reality is that the Dawgs have played some pretty weak teams. While the results from the Auburn game were very encouraging, don’t we need a true benchmark like LSU in the Championship game to determine how good our defense really is?

Dr. Morpheus

I would think that a few more years as the fiery DC with Georgia will add to Grantham’s market value. The Dawgs will be in the BCS NC conversation next year and most of his best defensive players will be returning. Turning our D around 180 degrees in 2 years is impressive- battling for the Crystal Trophy in 3 with the transformation of the D being a critical component is career-making. Oh, and by all means, give the man a big raise and an extension. And if we repeat as SEC Champs in 2012 and Murray wins the Heisman, give ‘em to Bobo, as well…

We finally have some momentum going and we don’t need to waste it all by letting our D.C. go fishing for $Greener$ pastures. Pay the man- extend the contracts of all the defensive staff- extend Richt’s contract the same length as Grantham’s. Watch the recruits flock to athens and get ready for next year. I’d like to see us run up the score a bit against all of them except poor Kentucky. Well, maybe some mercy on pitiful Tech, since they’re in the Great State of Georgia.

Of course, there’s still the chance that Tech could beat us. A good Georgia team has been beat by a bad Tech team before, and vice versa.

Yes, we’ve had a pretty decent season, especially given the bad start.

It is hard not to be (prematurely?) excited, ain’t it. Even with a string of wins against weak teams, at least we won. And against Auburn we looked pretty good doing it. It was a fun game, and has been a fun season so far, all in all.

Certainly we have to give some of the credit for our relatively good season so far to the coaches, particularly the defensive coach, I think, but also to Mark Richt.

Having said that, let’s please not go overboard. Mark Richt has not lived up to what we all thought to be his potential when he arrived, and in the early stage of his career at UGA. Until he does, we shouldn’t act like he has.

The record (his record) is plain enough. There have been too many losses against the big boys, too many important games lost, too few wins against the heavy hitters of our league. Etc.

Winning a weak SEC East is a whole lot better than not winning, and this year is way better than last year, and no school’s team is ever going to win the National Championship every year, but Mr. Richt is still on the hot seat, or he should be.

Beat Kentucky. Beat Tech. Beat LSU, or Alabama, or Arkansas. Then, maybe contract talk makes some sense.

Not yet, guys.

Go, Georgia Bulldogs!

CMR is a proven, long term winner and recruiter and the PREMIER face of any football program in the nation. Seems to me, sir, that you just only want your version heard, even when your version is no different from all the rest of us. Fascinating that you DEFEND the schedule today when you certainly have ADMITTED, haven’t you, that the schedule is why we end up 11-3 as I said all Summer long we’d be. Truth hurts that Auburn’s defense is not # 2 in The SEC but # 86 Total Defense in the nation and their Offense is the # 97 Total Offense in the nation. They have ZERO votes in the AP Poll Top 25 and ALSO are not ranked in the Coaches’ Poll Top 25. Auburn still has to lose to Alabama, while you sit there bragging how we’d beat 11 teams this season, not 1 of which ends the season in the Top 25. Not 1 win. Pass the Kool-aid. AltamahaDawg

I saw an interesting dicusssion on another site and one of the poster offered up a hypothetical situation and I think his point is spot on.

IMAGINE if Richt had fired Bobo and hired a brand new OC who said he was going to completely revamp the offence in the offseason to be more of a faster paced hybrid Pro-Style/Shotgun Spread rather than the traditional play action Georgia offense of the past years. And this in an effort was to increase the plays and first downs, thus scoring opportunities.

Now Imagine that Georgia was leading the SEC in plays, first downs, TD passes, time of possession, QB rating, 3rd in scoring and sitting at 9-2, 7-1, and headed to the SECCG as a potential top 10 team. Aaron Murray (just a sophomore) had just broken the single season TD pass record with games still left. All this with a suspect line (and a new coach), and true freshman to replace last year’s top 2 Rec’s and RBs. Imagine also if the AA place kicker would have given him the extra 30 plus points that he should have.

This new OC would be seen as a hero, and everybody would be singing his praises every bit as much as they as Granthams now.

I like Grantham too but slow down on the significant pay raise and extension. TG is already one of the highest paid coordinators, and dont forget the significant raises that Georgia was responsible when they were turned down by other DC’s before hiring Grantham. We are already respoonsible for doubling how much good DC’s make now. There are plenty of other talented DC’s that would love to make what Grantham is making and if his goal is truly to be a head coach, raising his salary as a DC isnt going to keep him here. Let’s not let emotion get in the way of reason. Grantham is a great coach, but that is exactly what we expected from him or we wouldnt have offered him so much money to begin with.

Comments saying don’t “let” CTG go are a little … uh…ignorant. I assure you the athletic dept and McGarity will do the right thing. If CTG leaves, it will be for something he wants. A 5-7 year contract will have no bearing; he’s a pro with an agent and contracts are made to be broken or bought out. We could offer $2 million; but if he wants the other job, he’ll take it. Speculating that he’ll leave is premature also in that he: 1. wants to stay, 2. loves his job, 3. has kids in Athens schools and as far as we know his wife/family love Athens and might not want to move.

They will use their guidelines, the “norm” for SEC assistant coach salaries/contracts, and the market. Like my granpappy would say, “He aint studyin’ a contract rat now”. It’s good that he’s focused on the next game, and we hope the players are too. No distractions from fans nor the media.

Why dont you check the numbers and see how he did against AL and FL in 2008 when we had superior talent on offense and couldnt even score a field goal, Aub last year in the second half. UCF couldnt even score a TD. OK ST, Boise St,

The games we have lost he never makes adjustments, he has been talked about on every national sports station as predictable.

You might want to check your numbers against good teams how he did throughout a game before you act like he is some kind of guru.

For example his numbers look great in that 2008 AL game but take a closer look and you find he couldnt even get the offense close enough to kick a field goal in the first half. in the second half being down 31-0 he was able to do something even though AL had their 2nd and 3rd stringers in and Saban had called off the dogs

I have said all along that THIS was the year that Coach Bobo had to secure his job, as it figured the other side of the ball was going to be more settled, and his side needed to do the same. That appears to be exactly what will happen. I was wrong in this respect. I had said that the reason Bobo could never have been fired last year is that Richt could not afford to have learning curves 2 years in a row. But the guy fooled me and did what I think is brilliant. He took the advantages of keeping the o-staff in place (except the RG co-ordinator that, lets face it, had to go) till made the change “equavilant” to a new OC. It cost us the Boise game, (which probably would have been lost with the old style anyway) but I’d say we are in good shape now and going forward.

And BTW, kuddos to our guy JOEY, for calling that change to be more fast paced. I don’t know if we are quite the Oregan style he was talking about but definetely a different philosophy out there.

Flat Tire, In the 2008 Bama Game Georgias offense had 2 times in the first quarter, bama ahd 11 minutes TOP, in the 2nd quarter Georgias offense had 3 possessions and AJ fumbled on the 2nd one, Stafford had an intentional grounding call on the 3rd possession Stafford threw an interception. Poor execution and turnovers led to Georgias offensive woes in the 1st half. As for bama playing 2 and 3rd team again I disagree. At the start of the 4th quarter Georgia was down 31-17. I doubt Saban was throwing in the scout team with 15 minutes to go and a 14 point lead.Georgia had the ball with the chance to cut lead to 10 in the 4th quarter I doubt Saban is putting his 3rd team defense was on the field in that situation.

CTG shouldn’t be concerned about an extension. CMR has proven that he doesn’t even run bad coaches off easily. His job is safe as long as CMR’s is. My concern is that he’ll take a head coaching job somewhere soon. Nature of the business.

So both of you think after watching the last 3 wins that this staff will beat FL 2 yrs in a row and win the East both yrs

Because Im not seeing it on offense

The defense looks much improved but I realize much improved against 5 inept offenses but at least it has shown improvement

The offense is still the same sputtering along like usual with the “Lets hope we can run the clock out Mentatilty”

That wont cut it against good teams and we saw how well our offense performed against a decent team in Boise”

It was a debate on CMR, his Faith, and Christianity as a whole. I nearly stood up and applauded your comments and gained a new respect for you as a result.

Reason being is this. We can all cheer and jeer a bunch of 18-22 year olds, but fact be told, we have NO outcome on the team winning or losing no matter what we say. But in life, our “wins and losses” are of our own choosing more often than not. And your comments and sentiments to me stood for something FAR more important than any football game. I just merely pointed out that it happens .. and if I really go there, it happens often since the beginning of this season. Again, it’s nothing personal, but it does happen. You have your opinion, I have mine, Spaceman has his. But as for this season and next, a more mature offense and even more experienced defense makes the Dawgs look like the heavy favorite next year no matter what happens to SC, UF and UT.

let’s put things in focus. Coach ‘TG’ PROBALBY saved a lot of the UGA coach’s JOBS. I Really think he wants to stay at UGA for another 3-5 years. This will give him the time to get ready for the head job. I think “TG” is a little smarter than most. He’s seen the rat race at the next level (pro’s). He does’t want to make a mistake like a lot of want-to-be. I think Fla’s head man “WM” may have moved too soon. To keep”TG”, and keep him happy until he see what he can do with this team is has started, it’s gone to take more money and a 3 yr extention, If Aub. “O” man “GM” is worth a million a year, so is coach “TG”.I think Coach “MR” would agree. Not every complaint is baseless and not every defense of the status quo is mindless. Nothing focuses the mind like a little bit of pressure. Entertainment central today for sure. Only one comment to expound upon, Mike Bobo called a good game against AU. More than likely that game plan won’t be nearly as effective against LSU or Alabama should they be the foe, should we get there. That’s where Bobo hasn’t matured as an OC yet, to take what a defense gives him and exploit that. Starting to feel better about the Dawgs, but, I still think Richt isn’t top shelf coaching material. The key to his success is having a “strong” AD behind him, and being surrounded by good coaches. Thing is, you could say the same thing about most head coaches. Looks like he’s going to be around a while longer, let’s enjoy some success with a “classy” head coach.

So let me get this correct. YOU think the only options availible to discuss Coach Bobo’s “playcalling” is the 1st game ………..and this past game. Nothing in between? interesting.

I’ll play along: Do I think Our line was playing nearly as well then, No. Do I think we had a couple of freshman WR that can pull off that back shoulder catch then? NO. Do I think Murray was as accurate as he is now? NO. So no, clearly we aren’t the exact same team doing the exact same thing, every single game since day 1. I should have specified that caviat.

I’ll ask you this, do you really think the team COULD have played it our nearly as well in the 1st game , had Bobo simply “called” it exactly the way he did this past week?

You are acting like the concepts and the plays are somehow all new in just this past week. That has been evolving and progressing thie entire season, but you could never allow yourself to admit that TILL it was so blattenly slapped in your face, you had to say something. So now it’s OH yea, if we “playcall” a 45-7 rout, it okie dokie with you. But only because dumb ol Bobo finally did it the way you have been saying all along.

The game plan for Auburn could have been a photo copy of what he called against UF (which you hated). The fact that other crircumstances were different outside of that seems to have eluded you.

In the first post I responded by giving Richts current record and where the program was heading.
And the response of the Fulmer issue of who would we hire because we would end up like Tenn. I gave the AL answer as an example of what programs at their level expect.

Did I say Fire Mark Richt due to that record. Nope I was just bringing up the point that I as a fan want better and are tired of fans thinking that UGA’s best is 10 win seasons only

You said you loved the I-formation because we were in it 90% of the time, which you have been saying all along is the best chance for us to move the ball.

This is after building a 35-7 halftime lead? SO you love what we do with a 4 TD lead? yes captain obvious, we all do.

We were in a true “I-formation” maybe 6 time the entire first half building that lead. And half of those not really more of Figgins shifting from what was really a TE position back and forth, not lining up as a FB.

I’d say NOT In the I 90% woiuld be more accurate during the scoring in the first half.

The BIG run plays were pretty much all out of single back formation, a couple of which were draws. You’re a huge fan of the draw play now all of a sudden?

Carlton Thomas. I asked somebody else a couple of weeks ago why he said the UF game plan stunk. He never answered but YOU popped in and said something like “yea great plan, running Thomas up the middle”. (which happened TWO times out of 83 plays)

Now somehow you are a huge fan of that “call” to have Carlton Thomas running between the tackles?

YOU loved how we were finally trying to score, even with a big lead.

This is the “trying” that consisted of running the ball 20/22 plays to end the game. The absolute most conservative vanilla offense we run. 20 times. How was that NOT the definition of sitting on a lead. In fact you have to go back 5 games to find a time we scored less in the second half.

AltamahaDawg

You said we finally stoped that “silly” sideline pass. You mean except the 2 big ones to Mitchell, or the 2 to Bennett? All critical to scoring that 2nd and 3rd TD.

Loved the “crossing patterns”, you say. I don;t know what games you have been watching but we have had crossing patterns galore. The only real big one I rememebr was Charles getitng that critical first down. he has done that all year long. Certainly weren’t 4 like those silly side passes.

I don’t even think oyu know what a “deep slant” is so, I won’t get too deep in that. I suspect you are confusing it with any number of thigs, all of which we have been running forever.

What else was so different about Bobo’s “playcalling” this past week?

Again

What did Bobo call basically the entire Boise game run draw up the middle for nothing

The 3 big runs Crowell got were in the I-Formation or toss sweep to the outside go back and watch the game

But did he stick with that no
The only trick play he ran to throw them off was to Boykin and we didnt try it again
Then my personal Bobo favorite was all the sideline pass plays that he is known for priceless

Did he throw a screen to Figgens who we all no has good hands

And the FL game we didnt run it much in the I either. Bobo did start throwing more crossing patterns and deep slants finally in the 2nd half more and Bobo as having all year and as Bill King brought up couldnt manage anything inside the 30 much of the game as being the same in the Vandy game

The Miss St game after boo’s from the crowd for once again not going for it on 4th and inches was still taking place. But I guess after all the boo’s now we have started going for it

But your going to sit here and tell me that play calling was the same all year give me a break

Altamaha, he may have crossing patterns and slants confused. UGA does crossing patterns regularly. AJ Green used to get no YAC some games because the crossing patterns were covered heavily. This year, they have exposed some for not covering them enough. Hard slants on the other hand are a bit of a rare play call and I think it’s a play we should put in there with either Bennett or King being big and physical. Tough play to cover.

Flat Tire, I’m with you 100% on the “Richt dropped the ball” band wagon. Agreed, he let this program slide to the low we saw vs UCF last year. He did that by having more of a fellowship role with his coaches and players than taking a leadership role IMO. It’s going to be a while before I forget Richts total failure as a Leader over the last several years. It mystifies me still to know that some of us saw it happening and called it as it happened but he either couldn’t see it, or did nothing about it and hoped it would go away.

That said, I’m sure there’s still a lot of love to spread around by listening to Richt talk, but he’s taken more of a “tough” love position than in the past “when necessary”. Recruiting is good, defense is good to outstanding now. He can’t turn it completely around in one year, but with good players and good position coaches “as Friend seems to be turning out”, an improved S&C program, the future looks better than it has in several years. Hopefully we will see Richt and McGarity look to shore up the remaining weaknesses, or areas needing improvement and indeed compete for the SEC Championship consistently.

Richt still has two years on his contract. Why are all the unemployed double digit IQ types screaming to extend Preacha Man’s contract.

He has a proven track record which is atrocious.

Get some perspective. He already blew the easiest schedule in UGA’s history. Even with the run against mediocres, we aren’t even in the top ten. Even if we win the SEC championship we still have two losses so can’t get the crystal football.

Richt is a logo, a salesman, a recruiter, a CEO. He is not a coach.

UGA needs a real head ball coach.

Period dot com.
———————–
Gosh where do a I start? First, how does a guy with an 8-2 record “blow” the easiest schedule in UGA’s history? Didn’t make sense there. Second, “we” are not in the top 10, not because of CMR, but because voters.haven’t moved them up far enough yet. His track record is atrocious? Hmm, only two other coaches in the SEC I believe with at least 2 SEC titles. Make some sense will ya.

What is your point, do you just love the status quo

3 BCS bowl appearences in 29 yrs
2 SEC championships in 29 yrs
3-20 against FL who continue to beat us yr after yr and represent the SEC east
A losing record against top 10 teams
13-12 in the SEC EAST since 2006
30+ ARRESTS in 4 yrs
11 ARRESTS last yr
Put friendship ahead of the program in refusing to fire Martinez
Has lost 2 times to KY once to Vanderbilt in the last 5 yrs

All while putting more NFL players than FL has in 20 yrs and
Ranking 4th among NCAA schools in putting players in the NFL since 1999 and
Having a decade straight except last yr in top 10 recruiting classes

Now I hope Richt can turn it around but the above has to stop or either stop making fans have to give so much of their hard earned money or Richt can take %50 pay cut because thats the production we have gotten

Or the time Murray missed him wide. he was pretty covered anyway. And I am certain you recognized the times this year when Figgins rolled out jusy like that but was covered and Murray had already gone to some other option. Because know you were just joking, that we never even tried it before, till the Auburn LB had a brain cramp and left it so wide open.

The BSU game was partly due to coaching but it isn’t like that isn’t BSU’s MO .. schedule an AQ team first game of the year, go in and win, then run the table on little teams .. err .. except for TCU I guess and Nevada last year. Anyway, I guess 2007 and 2008 with the number or ranked team wins, number of total wins and a BCS bowl win is cause for an atrocious record. You haven’t made ONE point that can’t be lit up. Nice try. I didn’t say anything about execution or blame anyone. Murray threw it low because there was a LB chasing him.Not his fault. I guess I am inadvertently blaming who ever was supposed to block that guy. Would you like to argue that we have always done that perfectly? And it’s nobodies “fault” if Figgins is covered and Murray throws it away, is it? In fact isn’t the the exact opposite of didn’t execute. That’s a good job there. My point (which I am sure you know since you are trying so hard to divert it) is that YOU are trying to pretend that Bobo somehow inexplicable never tried a play that Georgia has run for years till just now, and I am saying, wrong, wrong, wrong. We probably run that play 3 or 4 times a year, and I remember 3 already. And who know how many times it was optioned away from because of coverage.

All I have said in regards to people getting mentioned for HC spots is this: We as a general public don’t know half the stuff that goes on between schools looking to hire someone and the prospective candidates themselves and secondly, why does Gus Malzahn get so much love when he has proven NOTHING without his rented mule from last year?

Flat,

You know that argument has a flip side to is also. Look at what he has been able to achieve this year with perceived lesser talent.

Also you have to take into account each individual teams goals and desire towork together to achieve a common goal. I think with Stafford and Moreno you had guys looking to achieve the ticket to the NFL and where not truly DGD.

In saying that Richt looks to have gotten guys in Athens who seemingly enjoy being a Dawg and want something more for the team rather than themselves.

CTG’s defense is playing well, but let’s be real. He will get a raise whether he wants it or not this year, but the truth of the matter is I’m going to use the LSU game/SECC as a benchmark because I really don’t care that we’ve won 8 in a row, soon to be nine.

You want the big money, play the best offenses in the country and shut ‘em down. As noted, he will get a raise no matter what else happens this year, if for no other reason because he’s earned given the increase in team defensive performance this year. But the keys to big money are spoiling LSU’s dream season by beating them in ATL in December.

The greatest “fight” I ever saw was during the Chic-Fil-A bowl, when this volgirlfan started his usual crude talk and slander, and a man sitting on the next row above the volsgirlfan tapped him on the shoulder, told him to shut up with the crudeness… and then planted his #12 shoe directly into the volsgirfan face! He went crying (like the little girl he is) to security to get the UGA man thrown out of stadium. The security guy threw the WRONG guy out. He should have thrown out the volsgirlfan! Wonder if GTbob is that same little girl? I noticed that volsgirlfan shut his #$%^@ pie hole for the rest of the game. · This was not the year to front end load our schedule with some of the toughest opponents. We were so young (particularly at WR and RB) and we had a new OL coach working with very little depth.
· We had to play those first two opponents essentially without our two proven ILBs.
· As young guys have emerged, injured players have returned, Murray has gotten in a groove, and both our entire defense and our OL have jelled … we have become a tremendously improved FB team.
· No way to prove (or disprove) this statement … but if BS and SC had been our last 2 games, as opposed to our first 2, I have no doubt that we could easily be 10 and 0 right now!
