Georgia’s Todd Grantham focusing on Kentucky, not contract extension

ATHENS — Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said Tuesday he’s focusing on nothing this week but preparing his unit for Kentucky’s offense and leaving contract negotiations to his agent.

Grantham has 14 months remaining on a three-year contract he signed to become Georgia’s defensive coordinator in January of 2010. His annual salary of $750,000 ranks among the highest in the country for assistant coaches.

Grantham’s agent/attorney, Michael Harrison of Stevenson Ranch, Calif.,  told the AJC on Sunday that Grantham wants a contract extension. Harrison said he has already “gotten inquiries” from some NFL teams about the possibility of Grantham returning to that league and that he has “gotten feelers” indirectly from colleges gauging Grantham’s interest in becoming a head coach. Ultimately, however, he said Grantham wants to remain in Athens.

Grantham was asked about his agent’s comments on Tuesday.

“You hire people to do a job for you and I let him handle that part of it,” he said. “My focus is on getting the defense to play well and getting us ready for the Kentucky game and getting ready to win the SEC East, truthfully.”

Grantham’s defense has climbed to No. 4 in the nation statistically as the Bulldogs have won eight straight games. A win over Kentucky on Saturday will clinch a berth in the Dec. 3 SEC Championship Game in the Georgia Dome.

Grantham, 45, admitted he would like to become a head coach one day. But he said playing in the title game is dominating his thoughts at the moment.

“I think everyone wants to become a head coach,” he said. “First of all, I have a very good job. I was excited to come here because of the vision I had about what I felt you could do with the type of players you can get at the University of Georgia. I’m very excited to be here. Truthfully, I just focus on every situation that’s coming up. For instance, after I leave here I’m going to a third-down meeting to figure out how we’re going to get off the field on third down and then what we’re going to have to do to win the game this week.

“We’re in a championship game this week. There’s a lot of time, energy and study that has to go into each week that honestly you don’t have time to focus on anything like that. You just focus on the next task at hand.”

Flat Tire, you can say what you want but everyone who has been on here this entire year knows full well you wanted to see him gone in the worst way. Not one positive thing to say about him outside of his Faith. All of which eluded to your desire to see a coaching change.

He blew the season because with the talent on the team we should be no less than undefeated going to Georgia Tech.

We are not in the top ten because we lost two games, dufus. Especially, the South Carolina loss was because of lousy coaching and a lousy game plan.

Richt’s record over the past five years, when the talent on the teams is considered, is atrocious.

So you are zero for three Tampa Dawg.

What is your point, do you just love the status quo

3 BCS bowl appearences in 29 yrs
2 SEC championships in 29 yrs
3-20 against FL who continue to beat us yr after yr and represent the SEC east
A losing record against top 10 teams
13-12 in the SEC EAST since 2006
30+ ARRESTS in 4 yrs
11 ARRESTS last yr
Put friendship ahead of the program in refusing to fire Martinez
Has lost 2 times to KY once to Vanderbilt in the last 5 yrs

All while putting more NFL players than FL has in 20 yrs and
Ranking 4th among NCAA schools in putting players in the NFL since 1999 and
Having a decade straight except last yr in top 10 recruiting classes

Now I hope Richt can turn it around but the above has to stop or either stop making fans have to give so much of their hard earned money or Richt can take %50 pay cut because thats the production we have gotten

I figured that you did liked that play. I noticed you were complimenting Bobo on that about 3 weeks ago when he tried that exact same thing, but Murray threw it at Figgin’s feet. Or the time Murray missed him wide. he was pretty covered anyway. And I am certain you recognized the times this year when Figgins rolled out jusy like that but was covered and Murray had already gone to some other option. Because know you were just joking, that we never even tried it before, till the Auburn LB had a brain cramp and left it so wide open.

Snoop Doop, you are 0-life .. you haven’t made a legitimate point yet. The SC loss was due to coaching? Dude, come on. That’s, at best, a stretch. The BSU game was partly due to coaching but it isn’t like that isn’t BSU’s MO .. schedule an AQ team first game of the year, go in and win, then run the table on little teams .. err .. except for TCU I guess and Nevada last year. Anyway, I guess 2007 and 2008 with the number or ranked team wins, number of total wins and a BCS bowl win is cause for an atrocious record. You haven’t made ONE point that can’t be lit up. Might want to get with Thomas Brown to brush up on your football knowledge .. oh, wait, it looks like you already did, and that may be the problem.

Glad you brought that up about Murray’s innaccuracy as I posted several weeks ago as to why Bobo needs to go back to QB coaching to focus more on the fundamentals of our QB

Murray as I stated his footwork was not good and as I stated he was keying on one reciever and thats why a couple of his INT were DB’s keying in on it and were able to close in an make the INT

The Gus Malzahn thing is intriguing though. You see, Auburn was an average team prior to Cam Newton. After Cam Newton, still only a little better than average and yet they are talking about hiring their OC to be a HC. So if that’s what they want, by all means let them have it.

The issue with Bobo is the style of offense UGA runs. It is not the Mike Leach style of offense that puts up video game type numbers. If UGA has sustained success since ‘07 the conversation may be different also.

If I where a AD I would look at Oklahoma State and Texas Techs OC as possible head coaches along with Malzahn.

Nice try. I didn’t say anything about execution or blame anyone. Murray threw it low because there was a LB chasing him.Not his fault. I guess I am inadvertently blaming who ever was supposed to block that guy. Would you like to argue that we have always done that perfectly? And it’s nobodies “fault” if Figgins is covered and Murray throws it away, is it? In fact isn’t the the exact opposite of didn’t execute. That’s a good job there. My point (which I am sure you know since you are trying so hard to divert it) is that YOU are trying to pretend that Bobo somehow inexplicable never tried a play that Georgia has run for years till just now, and I am saying, wrong, wrong, wrong. We probably run that play 3 or 4 times a year, and I remember 3 already. And who know how many times it was optioned away from because of coverage.

I posted the points per game to show that the players are executing. The talent is making things happen. That may prove your point more than anything else. All I have said in regards to people getting mentioned for HC spots is this: We as a general public don’t know half the stuff that goes on between schools looking to hire someone and the prospective candidates themselves and secondly, why does Gus Malzahn get so much love when he has proven NOTHING without his rented mule from last year?

Flat,

You know that argument has a flip side to is also. Look at what he has been able to achieve this year with perceived lesser talent.

Also you have to take into account each individual teams goals and desire towork together to achieve a common goal. I think with Stafford and Moreno you had guys looking to achieve the ticket to the NFL and where not truly DGD.

In saying that Richt looks to have gotten guys in Athens who seemingly enjoy being a Dawg and want something more for the team rather than themselves.

There is no I in team and that team you listed had plenty of I guys.

I don’t know if guys like Green, Stafford and Massaquoi weren’t DGDs (maybe Moreno wasn’t, I don’t know) but is it not fair to say that an OC can get better from 2008 to 2011? Is that not possible?

I hear ya Lowcountry, but I definitely don’t think that was the case with Stafford. He had everything to play for. When your agenda is the NFL, having big performances is in your best interest, especially in big games.
