Georgia’s Todd Grantham focusing on Kentucky, not contract extension

ATHENS — Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said Tuesday he’s focusing on nothing this week but preparing his unit for Kentucky’s offense and leaving contract negotiations to his agent.

Grantham has 14 months remaining on a three-year contract he signed to become Georgia’s defensive coordinator in January of 2010. His annual salary of $750,000 ranks among the highest in the country for assistant coaches.

Grantham’s agent/attorney, Michael Harrison of Stevenson Ranch, Calif.,  told the AJC on Sunday that Grantham wants a contract extension. Harrison said he has already “gotten inquiries” from some NFL teams about the possibility of Grantham returning to that league and that he has “gotten feelers” indirectly from colleges gauging Grantham’s interest in becoming a head coach. Ultimately, however, he said Grantham wants to remain in Athens.

Grantham was asked about his agent’s comments on Tuesday.

“You hire people to do a job for you and I let him handle that part of it,” he said. “My focus is on getting the defense to play well and getting us ready for the Kentucky game and getting ready to win the SEC East, truthfully.”

Grantham’s defense has climbed to No. 4 in the nation statistically as the Bulldogs have won eight straight games. A win over Kentucky on Saturday will clinch a berth in the Dec. 3 SEC Championship Game in the Georgia Dome.

Grantham, 45, admitted he would like to become a head coach one day. But he said playing in the title game is dominating his thoughts at the moment.

“I think everyone wants to become a head coach,” he said. “First of all, I have a very good job. I was excited to come here because of the vision I had about what I felt you could do with the type of players you can get at the University of Georgia. I’m very excited to be here. Truthfully, I just focus on every situation that’s coming up. For instance, after I leave here I’m going to a third-down meeting to figure out how we’re going to get off the field on third down and then what we’re going to have to do to win the game this week.

“We’re in a championship game this week. There’s a lot of time, energy and study that has to go into each week that honestly you don’t have time to focus on anything like that. You just focus on the next task at hand.”

Flat tire, have you actually heard of any team going after our DC? Doubt it, and you probably won’t especially at this point in the season. So it only stands to reason that you won’t hear about it regarding the OC either.

So you disagree with something in that post, Flat Tire?

BTW, I don’t “hear” of people wanting to hire the overwhelming majority of assistants in the country. You need some new material, that one is worn out.

Who is to say Coach Bobo wants to leave? Have you ever heard him say he is ready to be a HC right now, come see me? What OC job in the country would possible be better than the one he has right now?

If Bobo was that good he would be talked about for a promotion just like Grantham but everyone knows what he has done with talent we have had in the past

Grantham has shown what he can do with talent. Thats why he is getting offers

This is not incredible knowledge; maybe for you 2 it is

what Kind of “promotion” is Grantham being considered for? What does that even mean.

Your constant drumming that nobody is publically getting turned down for offering Bobo a job that doesnt exist at a college that he doesnt want to be at……is at best, not very well thought out.

I think if you looked up “shows what he can do with talent” in the book of coaching, Bobo’s picture would be somewhere on that page. It’s been his “shows what he can do to work around it when the talent is not clicking” that has been his issues.

The way I see it is this: his offense has put up great numbers, especially this year. The only ones calling for his head are the technerd trolls who don’t have a real team to support. No way that he is replaced as OC.

Why dont you check the numbers and see how he did against AL and FL in 2008 when we had superior talent on offense and couldnt even score a field goal, Aub last year in the second half. UCF couldnt even score a TD. OK ST, Boise St,

The games we have lost he never makes adjustments, he has been talked about on every national sports station as predictable.

You might want to check your numbers against good teams how he did throughout a game before you act like he is some kind of guru.

For example his numbers look great in that 2008 AL game but take a closer look and you find he couldnt even get the offense close enough to kick a field goal in the first half. in the second half being down 31-0 he was able to do something even though AL had their 2nd and 3rd stringers in and Saban had called off the dogs

Anyone can have numbers Spaceman its calling a game to put you in position to win

I have said all along that THIS was the year that Coach Bobo had to secure his job, as it figured the other side of the ball was going to be more settled, and his side needed to do the same. That appears to be exactly what will happen. I was wrong in this respect. I had said that the reason Bobo could never have been fired last year is that Richt could not afford to have learning curves 2 years in a row. But the guy fooled me and did what I think is brilliant. He took the advantages of keeping the o-staff in place (except the RG co-ordinator that, lets face it, had to go) till made the change “equavilant” to a new OC. It cost us the Boise game, (which probably would have been lost with the old style anyway) but I’d say we are in good shape now and going forward.

And BTW, kuddos to our guy JOEY, for calling that change to be more fast paced. I don’t know if we are quite the Oregan style he was talking about but definetely a different philosophy out there.

Flat Tire, In the 2008 Bama Game Georgias offense had 2 times in the first quarter, bama ahd 11 minutes TOP, in the 2nd quarter Georgias offense had 3 possessions and AJ fumbled on the 2nd one, Stafford had an intentional grounding call on the 3rd possession Stafford threw an interception. Poor execution and turnovers led to Georgias offensive woes in the 1st half. As for bama playing 2 and 3rd team again I disagree. At the start of the 4th quarter Georgia was down 31-17. I doubt Saban was throwing in the scout team with 15 minutes to go and a 14 point lead.Georgia had the ball with the chance to cut lead to 10 in the 4th quarter I doubt Saban is putting his 3rd team defense was on the field in that situation.

All of a sudden our OC & DC are great coaches? Always rolls with the latest results, what a joke, Kentucky game is a gimme, lets see what happens with GT (Yes, they could beat us) & see what we do vs. LSU before we say these guys should get a raise, if we lose to Jackets & Tigers then everyone will be saying fire both of them & throw in CMR!!!

What kills me, is that in College, if the Offense doesn’t perform, its the Coaches fault, but in the NFL, if the Offense doesn’t perform, its the player. Which is it the coach or the player?

If the players continue to execute as they have in the past 2 games it will not matter what play he calls against Kentucky or Tech. Hopefully fumbling will not be an issue this week with Murray and Crowell.

CTG shouldn’t be concerned about an extension. CMR has proven that he doesn’t even run bad coaches off easily. His job is safe as long as CMR’s is. My concern is that he’ll take a head coaching job somewhere soon. Nature of the business.

So both of you think after watching the last 3 wins that this staff will beat FL 2 yrs in a row and win the East both yrs

Because Im not seeing it on offense

The defense looks much improved but I realize much improved against 5 inept offenses but at least it has shown improvement

The offense is still the same sputtering along like usual with the “Lets hope we can run the clock out Mentatilty”

That wont cut it against good teams and we saw how well our offense performed against a decent team in Boise”

THAT BEING SAID, I really hope you read this next post Flat Tire. You see, I distinctly remember you debating on here with a guy named TampaGator. It was a debate on CMR, his Faith, and Christianity as a whole. I nearly stood up and applauded your comments and gained a new respect for you as a result.

Reason being is this. We can all cheer and jeer a bunch of 18-22 year olds, but fact be told, we have NO outcome on the team winning or losing no matter what we say. But in life, our “wins and losses” are of our own choosing more often than not. And your comments and sentiments to me stood for something FAR more important than any football game. Thank you for sharing them.

The HC is the face of the team, especially in college football. But there are more than enough comments on AJC blogs where he is bashing, even agreeing with Thomas Brown, the Dawgs.

Flat tire, it’s just a matter of when you said “show me a post where I bashed the Dawgs” .. I didn’t say anything about the accuracy of the statement. I just merely pointed out that it happens .. and if I really go there, it happens often since the beginning of this season. Again, it’s nothing personal, but it does happen. You have your opinion, I have mine, Spaceman has his. But as for this season and next, a more mature offense and even more experienced defense makes the Dawgs look like the heavy favorite next year no matter what happens to SC, UF and UT.

When the media gives a negative opinion of Tim Tebow, everyone, including non-Gator fans, say they are bashing him. Even other media types admit to that. They aren’t bashing him as a person or calling him the big dummy from Florida. They are stating an opinion on his playing ability, but it’s called bashing. You stated an opinion on the offense. let’s put things in focus. Coach ‘TG’ PROBALBY saved a lot of the UGA coach’s JOBS. I Really think he wants to stay at UGA for another 3-5 years. This will give him the time to get ready for the head job. I think “TG” is a little smarter than most. He’s seen the rat race at the next level (pro’s). He does’t want to make a mistake like a lot of want-to-be. I think Fla’s head man “WM” may have moved too soon. To keep”TG”, and keep him happy until he see what he can do with this team is has started, it’s gone to take more money and a 3 yr extention, If Aub. “O” man “GM” is worth a million a year, so is coach “TG”.I think Coach “MR” would agree. It’s his call according to the “AD” I will wate and see what happens.
