Georgia head coach Mark Richt (L) and defensive coordinator Todd Grantham have proven to be a pretty effective tandem for the Bulldogs this season. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
ATHENS — It’s reasonable to assume — and we have to assume since Athletic Director Greg McGarity is reserving comment — that Georgia will extend the contract of head coach Mark Richt after the season if the Bulldogs get past Kentucky on Saturday to secure a spot in the SEC Championship Game.
Richt has only two years remaining on his agreement following this season and it would only seem logical that UGA would lengthen that by at least three or four years sometime after the season.
But there’s another contract matter with which the 15th-ranked Bulldogs are going to have to deal if the season continues to progress as it has.
The three-year contract that Todd Grantham signed to come to Georgia to coach its defense expires on Jan. 31, 2013. And while that’s still 14 months away, what the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator has done on his side of the ball in Year Two has made him a pretty hot commodity.
So says Grantham’s agent, at least. Michael Harrison, an attorney out of Stevenson Ranch, Calif., said he has already “gotten inquiries” from some NFL teams about the possibility of his client returning to that league as a coordinator. Harrison also said he has “gotten feelers” indirectly from colleges gauging Grantham’s interest in becoming a head coach.
Grantham came to UGA from the Dallas Cowboys, where he coached linebackers, and he was a defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns before that. It’s Grantham’s stated desire to one day become a head coach — the buyout in his contract is waived if he does — and several college positions have already opened up. More will surely become available at the conclusion of the regular season, and Harrison expects Grantham to be a part of those conversations.
“Todd wants to be at Georgia, though,” Harrison insisted. “But we’d like to get an extension.”
Here’s the rub: McGarity is not likely to be keen on providing multi-year deals for assistant coaches. It’s something he never did in 18 years as Jeremy Foley’s right-hand man at Florida.
Georgia’s multi-year contract for Grantham was executed by former UGA Athletic Director Damon Evans, who previously also had not offered extended deals for assistants. Grantham is the among the top three highest-paid coordinators in college football at $750,000 a year, according to a survey by USA Today, and the only UGA assistant coach with a multi-year deal.
How McGarity might actually feel about the situation we have no way of knowing because he’s not willing to comment on it at this point.
“We don’t talk about anything like that during the season,” McGarity said Monday, referring to both Richt and Grantham. “Our full focus is on our players and our opponent and right now that is Kentucky. We’ll deal with all that after the season.”
Asked whether the decision on Grantham would ultimately be his, McGarity said, “the head coach makes decisions on his staff.” But you can be sure McGarity will have input.
This much is also certain: Georgia’s defense has looked a lot better under Grantham’s guidance. After Georgia’s 45-7 win over No. 20 Auburn this past Saturday, the Bulldogs (8-2, 6-1 SEC) moved up to No. 4 in the nation in total defense. They’re also No. 5 against the run, No. 5 against the pass and they lead the SEC in quarterback sacks and tackles for loss. The TD it allowed in the first quarter against the Tigers was just the ninth in the last eight games against the defense.
In fact, Georgia’s defense has improved significantly in national ranking in every category kept in Year Two of Grantham’s leadership.
2010—-Defensive category—–2011
24————-Total————-4
27————-Rush————-5
72———–Pass Eff. ———–5
34————Passing———-15
40————Scoring———-12
51————-TFLs———–10
52————-Sacks———–25
The improvement over 2009, before Grantham was defensive coordinator, is even more significant.
Of course, Grantham does not come without faults. He was roundly criticized for making choke signs at a Florida kicker as he prepared to make the game-winning kick against Georgia in overtime in 2010. And Grantham ended up in a shouting match with Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin at the end of the Vanderbilt game last month. Both incidents resulted in internal reprimands from UGA and certainly could be a factor in any job considerations going forward.
Harrison said he does not believe it will be an issue. “A lot of people want a coach with Todd’s fire and passion for the game,” he said.
Certainly it would be in Richt’s best interest to keep Grantham. Richt has spoken glowingly recently of his defense and its coordinator.
“It’s a lot more fun to coach when you’ve got a good defense and the guys are playing the way our guys are playing,” Richt said Saturday. “It makes up for a lot of deficiencies. It just kind of helps you iron some things out sometimes. . . . Todd studies defenses and offenses as well as anybody I’ve been around. He will have a plan and he will understand what needs to be done. But then he’ll try to make it as simple as possible for our guys. He understands tendencies, he understands formations and groups and when different guys are in the game. He knows the percentages and he’s got fire in his belly. He’s really doing a great job.”
So I put the question to you. Should the Bulldogs move to lock up Grantham as soon as they can for as long as they can? Or should Georgia remain guarded in their approach to long-term contracts?

One thing is for sure, if McGarity can walk through the minefield this year with expthe skill he exhibited by expressing proper confidence in his HD without boxing himself in, he can handle a fairly straight forward contract(s) extention with everybody coming off looking great.

So Altamaha’s not a pot smoker? I better call that barge full of muchies going down the Flint back.
Think about it, Richt’s feelings, contract extension, security, the warm fuzzies. There’s nothing meaner than a Dawg backed into a corner, unless it doesn’t have a backbone. The true measure of a mans heart is measured when he faces adversity. So far he’s responded well. Why not let him “prove” his metal, he’s still got two years left on his contract. He can sell the recruits on his record and guarantee he will be back. This HS about losing recruits is just that.

In the SEC, having a great DC puts you in position to compete for championships on a fairly regular basis. We won 6 in Erk’s 19 years in Athens. We were in the hunt every years except BVG’s first year, and we are in the hunt this year with Grantham. I think the main difference between Donnan and Richt is that Donnan could never find a good DC. Lock Grantham up and let’s compete at a high level.

I never took you for one LC, I enjoy reading your posts and hearing your thoughts/perspectives.
In baseball, good pitching usually beats good hitting, in football, “great” defense usually beats “good” offense. We have a “good to great” defense this year. We will keep Grantham, McGarity will keep things in perspective, I believe. We can compete should we make the SECCG, and show up, prepared. Make no mistake, we will have to survive more than one “punch in the mouth”.

My “use” was never an issue. (Except for the guy in here looking for any chidish insults). I never said I did or didn’t.
Nothing about this contract issue is about warm and fuzzy. not ever sure its really a recruiting issue all that much. It’s business, there is a proper way to handle it. McGarity knows what it is.
And my point is that there is nothing left for Richt to “prove” to Mcgarity. You are assuming McGarity is using simplistic terms of win totals etc. He has already stated that he is not. I believe “direction” is what he is looking at, and surely he is convinced one way or the other. I am also sure that he has made whatever point he needed to make behind closed doors, not in a public spectacle. Personally, I think Richt responded more to the situation, not the pressure. I don’t see Mcgarity believing that holding off will motivate. Either he is your guy or he is not. If so, back him 100% and that means treating his contract the same way you would if it were any other coach in a SECCG.

Could really care less whether you did or didn’t, or whether or not you inhaled.
Have you ever studied psychology, do you know the theory of motivation? Richt needs this extension for his psyche as a vote of confidence. Navigating a troubled road builds character. Firing Richt would be a risky move, even for me, I’ve never been a Richt fan. I can live with him so long as he’s doing his job, we just have different philosophies on how to arrive at point A. Doesn’t mean he’s wrong. Maybe McGarity and Richt are similar, maybe not.
If McGarity’s comfortable with him he will get the extension. If I’m AD, he doesn’t get it until next year. I see McGarity in a vise right now. A few years back I thought maybe Richt had gotten it, he proved me wrong. Fool me once, shame on me, fool me twice, I’m a dumba$$. Yeah, I adlibbed.

Look at what Jenkins said on the recruiting trail Mobile. That is how important it is in extending Richt. Having lived in SC during the Bowden era of Clemson you cannot afford not to extend Richt. Tommy was killed by rivals by Clemsons inability to make a choice on him. Not saying its right or wrong but McGarity has to look 5 years down the road and see if he feels comfortable with Richt as his coach. If so then extend him along with Grantham 3 years. Make Grantham the highest paid DC in College football.

25-32. The teams we’ve beat are 25-32. The last 2 “opponents” combined do not have a winning record. For this, we are to give Mark Richt a CONTRACT EXTENSION when not 1 is ranked today in the AP Poll nor will any of them end up ranked in the AP Poll Top 25. Oh, yeah, wait for it now, because of this, when Florida Auburn and Tennessee have not combined for 15 Losses in 30 years and already have 15 Losses this season, we are to beat LSU.
49-26 LSU has beat teams this season who are 49-26. LSU has beat Consensus # 4 Oregon away from home. LSU has beat # 23 in the Coaches’ Poll West Virginia at West Virginia. LSU has beat Consensus # 3 Alabama at Tuscaloosa.
As the LSU fans told you on this blog, your logic defies all known understanding, give Mark Richt a RAISE and an EXTENSION now and thus can only be best described as DISNEYdawgs.com

Cushy job Mark Richt has. He averages the # 7 recruiting ranking every single year for 11 years and will next year for 12 years in a row, too. Our players are suspended, for which he was given GREAT CREDIT according to you for bringing here, but NONE of the blame for the fact that for 11 years and counting, he has had NO DISCIPLINE on or off the field. We for 11 years have NOT beat the teams who finish in the AP Poll Top 10 at 3-10. We for 11 years have NOT beat the teams who would not finish in the AP Poll Top 25 had they not beat Mark Richt, 17 of them to-date and counting.
You are SOFT. You let Mark Richt tell you he is the # 4 best football coach in all of America, when the facts are he is in a state which finds but 2 other states who have more top recruits who go on to the NFL, and no competition in-state for them. We don’t recruit the obvious holes we have, such as not recruiting 1 fullback of the 200 fullbacks every year for the last 6 consecutive recruiting classes. You replied to me all off-season that we have great fullbacks. Instead, what we have is not 1 has had so much as a great play all season against all these 25-32 UNRANKED in the AP Poll Top 25 today CUPCAKES.
Wake me up when we beat a team who finishes in the AP Poll Top 10 as LSU has TWO (2) of already as they did in 2007 when again Mark Richt beat no team who finished in the AP Poll Top 10.
We have our best years when we play WEAK OPPONENTS and even then WE LOSE to teams we SHOULD NOT LOSE TO, such as South Carolina this year. Insert your EXCUSES for this you Richt Apologists.

Every single RICHT-O-PHILE has come onto this blog and stated that MARK RICHT SHOULD BE FIRED.

For what ?
Easy job being head coach at UGA.
Easy. And, it is ALL your fault, not mine. I have held him to higher standard, and he does NOT live up to it. Not with his DREAM TEAM headliner, Isaiah Crowell ON or OFF the field. In front of me Saturday afternoon, he immediately jumped up and was JAWING at Auburn a team who is NOT RANKED in either the AP Poll nor the Coaches Poll, and who still has a LOSS to Alabama coming. The week before, the coach said IC was taking his SECOND SUSPENSION of the season well. He played against the # 86 Total Defense and frankly did not do as well as Carlton Thomas against said NO DEFENSE # 86. Auburn has the # 97 TOTAL OFFENSE with absolutely NO PASSING GAME, and then I come in this blog today and read our SECONDARY is just ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS based upon this showing vs the # 97 Total Offense.
GIVE MARK RICHT an EXTENSION. That is ALL you have wanted from the beginning. You care not about our football program.

Mark Richt will be at UGA for many years and he will be a winning coach. Parents of recruits and players want their sons to be near coaches and staff like CMR. The players who have graduated or moved on stay in contact with him. It’s easy to be impatient but I think it will pay off for UGA, fans and football. I’ve had season tickets since 1968 and as we all know one year of bad numbers under CMR doesn’t compare to some of the past years. UK, GT and then LSU, GO DAWGS! I talk about South Carolina, not 2 years ago, but this season when we should have beat them and how in 11 years to-date Mark Richt has LOST to 17 teams who would not have ended up in the top 25 had they not BEAT HIM all 11 years.
