Preview: New Mexico State perfect opponent at perfect time for Georgia

Three storylines . . .

Missing persons. Georgia enters the game without its top four tailbacks. Freshman star Isaiah Crowell, Carlton Thomas and Ken Malcome are suspended after flunking a UGA-administered drug test and backup Richard Samuel underwent season-ending surgery on Tuesday for an ankle injury suffered in the Florida game. The Bulldogs will go with Brandon Harton, a 5-6, 174-pound sophomore from Reidsville who was awarded a scholarship in preseason camp, and Kyle Karempelis (5-9-180), a freshman walkon from Norcross.

Not-so-special teams. Expected to be a team strength this season, Georgia’s special teams plays is instead among the worst in the SEC, where it ranks in the bottom half if not dead last in almost every category. The Bulldogs will look to shore up kickoff coverage in particular. They gave up 200 yards and a touchdown on five returns against Florida last week and New Mexico State features the nation’s 12th-best return team.

Calling the Hogs. While most eyes in college football will be focused on Saturday’s night’s “Game of the Century” between No. 1-ranked LSU and No. 2 Alabama in Tuscaloosa (8 p.m., CBS), the Bulldogs and their fans will be more interested in what’s happening in Fayetteville, Ark., at about the same time (7:15 p.m., ESPN). There No. 8 Arkansas (7-1, 3-1 SEC) will be playing host to No. 10 South Carolina (7-1, 5-1). A Gamecocks’ loss will give Georgia sole possession of first place in the SEC’s Eastern Division.

A Georgia win would . . .

Be its 7th straight for the first time in a season since 2007

Be its 71st in 90 homecoming games (currently 70-17-2)

A New Mexico State win would . . .

Be its first against an SEC opponent in 14 tries.

Keep an eye on …

For Georgia: Brandon Harton. The redshirt sophomore from Reidsville is expected to get the start at tailback in the wake of the Bulldogs losing four others to suspension or injury this week. Harton (5-6, 174), a lightning quick and shifty runner, earned a scholarship in preseason camp and had actually worked his way up to No. 3 on the depth chart. But a severe ankle injury late in camp sidelined him for the first two games of the season.

For New Mexico State: Taveon Rogers. The Aggies’ senior wide receiver (6-0, 188) from Lancaster, Calif., is a threat in both the passing and return game. Last week he had 7 catches for 203 yards and 2 touchdowns against Nevada. It was his third multi-TD game of the season. He leads New Mexico State’s wideouts with 32 catches for 669 yards and is also averaging 27.5 yards on kickoff returns with a nation-leading two touchdowns.

The numbers game

6

Offensive touchdowns surrendered by Georgia defense in last 6 games

118-23

Aggregate score of Bulldogs three wins over New Mexico State

24

Tackles by Aggies safety Donyae Coleman vs. Nevada last week

The history book

Series record: Georgia leads 3-0

The last time: On Sept. 28, 2002, the Bulldogs fell behind 7-0 before scoring 41 unanswered points. Damien Gary notched Georgia’s first two scores on a 71-yard punt return and a 20-yard pass from David Greene.

The bottom line

This non-conference game comes conveniently sandwiched between rival contests against Florida and Auburn. Meanwhile, New Mexico State is exactly the type of opponent the Bulldogs need at this juncture of the season. The Aggies feature a high-octane offense (419 yards, 30 points per game) and one of the best return games in the country. Meanwhile, they’re giving up 442 yards a game and their rush defense ranks 111th nationally. So Georgia should be able to absorb its personnel losses while having to stay sharp and focused.

Reading all those names of athletes who flunked out begs the question;

“Is it better to have a squad full of 4-5 star recruits who may be the best athlete, but often bring a bad attitude and work ethic to the team and are looking to jump to the NFL at first chance, or a squad full of 3 star recruits who work hard, make good grades, and will stick around for their senior season?”

How many will be back this year or next year?

I am sure UGA will demolish New Mexico ST.
The UGA schedule this year is a disgrace. The SEC East is awful as a whole, and while LSU takes on Oregon and West VA, UGA counters with New Mexico ST and Coastal Carolina. Great!
I will give UGA props for taking on Boise St but that was a mismatch and Boise would demolish them again. If UGA meets the Bama/LSU winner in Atlanta, it is going to be a terrible beating..Something in the 45-7 range…..

SEC is the best conference in the country, even their cupcakes are better than most teams in all the other conference’s, Before this season started, all I heard was Georgia didn’t have any receivers or a running back to count on, a lot of the people though our defense was suspect, well how did that turn out and all I care about is that they are winning and that’s what they are doing might not be pretty but a win, is a win.

No I dont say fire him if he is 11-3 but if doesnt make a change with the OC you will see the same results year after year

I have never said fire Richt; fire Rich thats what is so funny about all you people

I just respond to the stupid moronic posts on here posts like

Richt has 100 wins he is the greatest coach ever at UGA
Richt has control of his team and will right this ship
We win 10 games bla bla bla bla bla BIG DEAL
Just because we lose to FL doesnt mean the season is all that bad

my favorite is Richt will win the national championship in 2 yrs

If you ever read and take notice I just respond to the stupidity with facts and then Im called negative, a troll, a tech or FL fan and the list goes on

You really think looking back after Van Gorder left that Richt is going to win championships here by the way he continues to run things and by what you have seen on the field this year

How is Richt responsible for things like medical dq’s, transfers, academic failures and players who transfer because they are prima donnas? What’s the point there ? There isn’t one. Just irrational ramblings caused by puberty setting in or too much beer cause Mom is out of town. And what about the schedule? It rotates and is made years in advance. Don’t look for a point, there isn’t one. In the paper yesterday it said UGA has one of the toughest drug policies in the country. I watched Kyle Karempelis at Wesleyan for 4 years. He is a stellar runner and an even better kid. He’ll do well tomorrow.

And to the blogger named Thomas Brown……buddy, just so you’ll know, i assume that my contribution level is pretty high compared to yours, and just so you’ll know, Richt aint going anywhere anytime soon, so go somewhere else and try to lead your life in the real world.

Richt will get the 5 year extension he deserves and that will set the minds of the recruits for 2012 and 2013 at ease since he will be there unitl the 2013 class graduates at least.

Anyone who thinks this is Richts fault doesnt understand football. Bobo needs to get demoted back to QB coach and then fire Garner and put Bobo in charge of Recruiting since he is an excellent recruiter. Then we can actually hire an OC that understands the game.

I encourage all fans to read this article. If Bobo doesnt attempt to implement this scheme tomorrow then he will be gone at the end of the year.

And hey hows the Ga lottery during for the education system in Georgia now you know that wonderful thing that was going to just amazingly help our education system

Funny thing about that. Teachers have been laid off and now you have larger class sizes, several school systems are going 4 days a week just to lessen the burden on the electric bill, I know several schools using text books 20 yrs old.

$10- 15B is a lot of moeny and can be used to help lots of projects for the government. And after 10 years thats 100- 150B from a plant. Health care overhaul will never happen. Republicans will block it and eventually a modified way less expensive system will come in place.

Get off your high horse. You act like you have never seen a team struggle before. During Richts first 5 years he was unstoppable. We only lost 2-3 away games and barely lost any contests to ranked opponents. But u cant think of it that way bc you are all about what have you done for me lately. Player arrests arent his fault, he cant control every single player on the team 24 hours a day. It would create a massive influx of jobs across the country. It would release thousands of people from jail whos only crime was pot, that in its self would save the US billions of dolalrs. Maybe you should try and look at the whole picture instead of assuming its just a way for the governtment to control something else.

Really you think Brian Vangorder had something to do with it?? No Sh!t, but Richt WAS calling the plays then and our offense was incredible. We didnt have a weakness then, David Greene kept us solid on offense and David Pollack kept us in it on the defensive side.

Actually Thomas Brown makes some great points.

I evaluate Mark Richt’s accomplishments relative to what he has to work with.

That has something to do with what he inherited, but far more to do with Georgia’s day to day realities.

I don’t care what Vince, Ray, Or Jimmy D. Pyramid did at Georgia……accepting mediocrity then is no reason to now.

UGA is the second biggest school in the SEC
UGA is one of the three best academic universities in the SEC
The State of Georgia is easily the fourth best recruiting state in America.
UGA has nearly free reign on any kid they want in State provided UGA isn’t performing horribly (which they NEVER should given their advantages)
Georgia doesn’t have another power in state. That is Tech’s fault because they stopped making football a priority 25 years ago. Tech could be much better if they chose to. But the reality is UGA is the only thing in UGA’s way in the state of Georgia
UGA’s facilities are second to none
UGA’s balance sheet is second to none
UGA’s college experience is second to none
Athens is second to none as a college town.
Georgia’s conference affiliation is second to none.
Georgia’s built in TV revenues/contracts and ability to be seen nationally are second to non (Maybe to ND & Texas with their own networks)
Georgia has a long history of being consistently pretty good. But that’s because our fanbase is more concerned with a great party and watching technicolor clips of #34 with Munson in the background than they are with DEMANDING excellence. Alabama, may be a bunch of obsessive rednecks with nothing else to do, but they win at the highest level fairly often because they Demand it. When Florida started demanding it, they became nationally relevant.

Richt is not a great coach. He’s a decent coach and a great man, and represents our university in fine fashion, which is sadly a rare thing and the main reason I’m not clamouring for his dismissal. But make no mistake, he’s not a great coach and Georgia could and should do better.

We lose as favorites 4 times as often as we win as underdogs.

hahahahaha bc I watched a documentary on MSNBC makes me a democrat wow, you truly are a dumb@$$.

The government controling pot doesnt equate to a government cotrolling the whole economy. You are comparing apples and oranges. And the only the the government would control is the price and the taxes that they apply to the sale of it.

And once again not a democrat, very much a republican. Vote only Republican. I think Obama is a moron and is ruining the country. More government control is never the answer. But like i said before they wouldnt be controling much of this trade.

Seriously if you want to debate something then do some research and stop just typing whatever comes to mind, it will make you appear less dumb than you really are.

The state of Georgia is more relevant now than 25 years ago.

Georgia was in the high teens population wise in 1985, now they are 8th or 9th.
Georgia was also about middle of the road in Total state GDP 25 years ago, they are top 12 now and rapidly moving up the list.

Point being……the state of Georgia is far more populated……..and populated with more wealthy people than it was 25 year ago. Richt has a different reality than Vince had, who was Georgia’s last “good” coach.

Im comparing the desire of you beloved democratic party who wants the US under more government control and Im saying how did that work out for the USSR

Now on another note you want to take credit for our top rated defense when it was fans like you, Altamaha Dope, Low Country Moron and many others boo hooing when Richt finally made a smart decision and fired Willie Martinez

Wait he didnt make that decision; he was told to or else

Laughable

Once again dumb@$$ not a democrat but you cant read clearly. I also addressed your theory on more government control but I guess you missed that too. Never have I ever stated for government control in fact im for less government control. But with the sad state of the economy I am open to comprimises such as legalizing something that can be used as medicine to a vast array of patients. It is also a viable renewable source for paper and is more efficient than deforrestation.

Monkey like intelligence

Yea you really have a lot of intellegence when you think legalizing pot will do this government wonders

Funny how gambling is becoming legal in a lot of states ie the lottery and yet the economy for some reason isnt getting better

Compromises you say; thats the problem with our country now; no one to think logicaly just idiots spouting of garbage like legalizing pot will make this economy better because they are to stupid to fix the problems

Like I said before and I’ll say it again our great American economy was not built on the legalization of dope and it didnt help then and it wont help now

how blind are you??? It is people like you that give us republicans bad names. You are so against any kind of change that you just wnat to say NO to everything. Its pathetic.

Legalizing pot will: reduce crime (no more arrest for a harmless crime), reduce the number of inmates in prisons (Those arrested for pot would be released and less of our tax dollars would be spent), create jobs in every state in the country (someone will have to run the shops, and they will need a staff to run the place), increase tax revenue (ppl who buy it will have to pay a special excise tax), Less trees cut down to make paper (hemp is a renewable source for making paper).

But who would want all of those good things to happen to the US.

O and that $10-15B number I gave you was for the additional tax revenue only. Add in all these other factors and its a splash in bucket.

But you are too dumb to understand this so you will go off about something else retarded.

Are you serious? You think that’s what I was doing – calling for Richt to resign?

Here’s a suggestion. Crack open a dictionary and look up these definitions: parody, irony.

It should have been clear to anyone with an IQ over 90 that I was invoking a loudmouthed buffoon, Keith Olbermann, in order to make fun of those people who think that Richt cheated on the timing of the release of the results of the drug test to maintain an advantage in the Florida game.

For persons of your apparent IQ or age group, I’ll make my point in simple, easy to grasp language:

Richt didn’t know about the drug tests before last Saturday’s game. Anyone who thinks so, without proof, is a conspiracy nut like that liberal loudmouth who got fired from MSNBC, Keith Olbermann. Richt is a good man who should get the benefit of the doubt.

true dawg fan: no they dont want to go to a program and university surrounded by scandal. As an alum I am extremely disappointed and disturbed about the things happening in and outside the classroom. Over 1600 IDs being sold is just the tip of the iceberg. Then it looks like we have a major drug problem with the football and athletic programs at uga. If all of the running backs were smoking pot together, are the wide receivers huffing paint during the bye week?

Just calm down, its college these kids are bound to have a little fun. Granted they shouldnt have done it during the season, but they are just kids. They have a ton of responsibilty on their shoulders at such a young age who are we to judge them for taking the edge off a little bit and relaxing with their friends??

As for 1600 IDs its college, and in Athens you have to be 21 to get in the bars even if you arent drinking. There are 35000 students at UGA, plus another 10K or so that go to gainesville down the road.

We deserve to lose all of our commits and any games we have left. It’s not hard to maintain a little control over athletes. And as for the fake ID thing…it’s ILLEGAL. Not only is it illegal, but it’s a felony. Great way to represent the university yall. UGA gets $0 from me this year.

hahahahahhaha, actually you have it backwards. Its people like you that are the problem. You put so much pressure on these kids and then get angry at them for enjoying life and being a kid. I understand the scholarship and free ride arguement and it is extremely valid. Thats why I said it was dumb for them to do it during the season. You are kidding yourself if you dont think that during the offseason that most of these kids in all football programs dont do this.

Legalizing pot would also give you the ability to grow your own. Not everyone would do that so there would still be a need for a store front. It would also allow the current store owners in states where it is legal, to breathe easy that the Feds arent going to break down their door and attempt to over rule state government authorities.

Smoke, do x, lsd, whatever every day if you want, but when playing football is what you’re at school to do….then do it for the 4 months of the season.

I hope you don’t ever / have yet procreated…injecting your genes further into the gene pool would be a shame.

Unlike you bull-tard fans you guys love mediocrity and celebrate it all the time and make excuse after excuse

Unlike your buddy Flat Man

Im not going to argue with a pot head like you. Why would I argue with someone who uses it and wants it legalized.

Im sure you have a library of books at home with all the reasons why it should be legalized to make you feel good inside about your deplorable habit

You are a great example of what a UGA fan is

By the way where can I find me a 10 win Champions T-shirt at? I know you guys sell plenty of them

Should have known you cant read. Please show me anywhere in my posts that says I use it. Go ahead. You wont find it but you will where I specifically state that I dont, but thats too much work for a retard from Bama to do.

If Saban leaves, your program will collapse back into mediocrity.

No one celebrates mediocrity, we dont want Richt to leave, he brings in top talent every year, most of whihc come to play specifically for him. Im sure Satan has those players as well that only come to Bama bc they want to play for him. Once he leaves it will take at lest 3 years to turn your program back around.

You are too dumb to understand why it should be legalized that much is obvious. And actually dont have any books on it, but I have written a research paper on it about 10 years ago and got an A, but thnaks for your concern.

If you do, it might persuade you to change your opinion of legalizing marijuana and give you some insight on the subsequent consequenses and dangers of how cannabis’ addictive use often leads to other illegal drug use and abuse. It’s not a pretty picture.

A school WINNING within the SEC, based on tradition alone is worth far more merit and poll consideration, than just about any other league …………………ESPECIALLY the ACC or that funky Mountain West thang.

Take Arkansas ……………. they will not win the SEC West but likely they will end up in the Cotton Bowl. ACC’s third or 4th place team? Could end up without ANY BOWL.

Imagine the tradition flowng at say …………….Wake Vs NC State. Wow!!! How about NC vs Marlyand my Maryland. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAhAHA

If you have followed any of this discussion you would understand by now that I do not partake in the usuage of Pot. I think that we can reform our government in the areas Flat Tire mentioned in his posts aswell as legalizing Marijuana. By legalizing this you will take away the stigma of it. If we are so concerned about gateway drugs you might want to ban Alcohol also as it is a precursor also. Reform our entitlements and legalize Marijuana. It does not have to be one or the other.

Now take the last 20 years with campaigns against smoking and you hardly ever see it on TV or movies because your considered stupid now

Alabama finished in the BCS Top 10 last year – their “down” year. It’s difficult for teams to remain in the Top 10 after they play Alabama. Not Nick Saban’s fault. Angel Moroni

Yeah, Bama has had some down years. They sucked in 2002 & 2003, as did most SEC teams. They sucked in 2006, which is why Mike Shula was fired. This firing was in spite of Shula having had a better year in 2005 than Georgia has seen in this Century.

Saban was coaching what was left of Shula’s team in 2007 and they still took Georgia right down to the wire. Georgia won 23-20 in OT, didn’t they?

And they did lose by one point to Auburn last year. What was the Auburn vs. Georgia score last year?

DawgnLex, I’m riding the fence at this point with this coaching staff, I don’t think Richt has what it takes to win championships. How can I support what I don’t believe in. I have been a mostly silent critic of Richt, giving him a chance to turn things around. I haven’t seen “significant” improvement. Our record is the product of our schedule. Richt gets black marks for the first two losses as a Coach. First game we just were “flat unprepared” for what we faced. Second game, our mistakes beat us for the most part, for that he gets half a black mark. The weak schedule is good for six wins. Call it what you want, kool aid, rose colored glasses, ignorance, whatever, I don’t think Richt has earned his extension, there’s to much at stake to give him that. @Mobile Dawg

It is a conundrum. Nobody (including Mark Richt) could have guessed that this schedule would have been so soft. It has become a perfect storm to guarantee that Coach Richt will have a reasonably good record, on paper, at the end of the season. Still, even against weak opponents, they have struggled too often. Without critical injuries to Florida, they probably wouldn’t have won in Jax. Losing that game would have been hard for the fan-base to swallow. Even among Coach Richt’s most avid supporters, it has been understood that a losing season this year would be unacceptable.

And yet, I really can’t see them losing more than 2 additional games at this point. An 8-4 season is not terrible. It’s hardly a firing offense. I haven’t seen any of the rumors of retirement in an official publication – only on blogs. Still, somehow it wouldn’t surprise me if Coach Richt did make an arrangement to retire. He’s been around a long time. He could take some time off, and come back to coaching later if he wanted to. I wish I had such an option. I’d have to consider it! ;-)

@Bigttap

You’re wrong. Alabama and LSU have played against some quality competition, although they’ve both also played against some inferior competition. Georgia’s defensive stats are built on cupcakes. It’s hard to know how well they would play against a quality offense. They didn’t play very well against a one-dimensional Florida team until Brantley was gimpy and missing every throw, and Florida wasn’t even pretending that they were going to try to run the ball.

10,000,000,000 True Dawg Fan 10 billion only says legalizing what is wrong with our youth and what is wrong with our football program, defending – or, trying to – a guy who is SUSPENDED for the game today because he is SUSPENDED for the 2nd time in 9 games, while jawing at every cupcake after every 4 yard run, finding 229 faster than he 2011 recruiting class alone, as he says Waah, don’t hit me, I didn’t know how hard it was going to be, Mark Richt save me sir, take me out the game, as his own coach and all of us say Isaiah Crowell is just wrong, and as Mike Bobo yells down from his headset : Tell that IC, this is the fing Florida game; get back in there. True Dawg Fan likes to defend drug use; I get that; he has repeatedly had it out on these blogs with WDE giving True Dawg Fan all he can handle about True Dawg Fan’s defense of drug use. Now, he defends IC; and why ? Because True Dawg Fan wants to defend IC’s alleged drug use.

So, what do we have ?

10 billion is the way to pay off the national debt.

It would take 8 generations to pay off the debt, True Dawg Fan. And, what would we have ? You don’t even know what spiiice k2 is. I hope you don’t. 10 minutes after this synthetic stuff, laced with serious drugs, and what do you want ? More of it. The purpose of it ? To get you high. Not to enjoy life. Not to gain something. But, to blow $ 150 so that 10 minutes after you blow the $ 150, you want to spend another $ 150. I make great money, but, if this is your idea to pay off the national debt, you are a man with no business sense, and worse, a foolish person who wants to defend IC when no one else will. All afternoon, you brag of how much you have bested everyone on this blog with this demotivating drug. Addictive. Yes, sir, addictive. You don’t even know what it is. And, here you are announcing you alone have the solution for the national debt.

99 percent of the NCAA student-athletes do NOT do this drug. More than 99 percent of the NCAA student-athletes. Our Dream Team # 1 headliner of a recruiting class ranked # 6 nationally by Scout.com, tested POSITIVE for it. And, you – to defend this guy – come up with this, as your solution for our 15 trillion dollar national debt that you state studies show that the government could generate $10 billion annually toward the national debt and that that is a pretty significant number.
55,000,000,000,000
15,000,000,000,000
10,000,000,000
drug users because you want to get high to pay off the debt.
4,000,000,000,000 interest on Total US Debt
4 trillion is the interest on the debt and you think 10 billion is significant.
Don’t be planning on running for President anytime soon.
You’d last about 1 New York nanosecond. If it was 500 times more, it would not even pay the interest.
And, what would we have ?

It is # 35.

4th best coach in college football, my behind. Yell at me all you want. Yell at all of us all you want. What you are left with is a head coach with NO DISCIPLINE on or off the field, who only beats cupcakes – and as others have pointed out to you you continue to feel it is only me you need to direct yourself to, what you find, is that we are

4 times as likely to lose to a team who we are supposed to beat, than we are to beat a team who we are supposed to lose to.

17 such games vs teams all 17 who if they had not beat us, they would not have finished in the top 25 all 11 years. Lose to Auburn or Georgia tek and that number increases since NEITHER will end the season in the top 25 probably even if they beat Mark Richt.

Georgia needs to make taking out the opposing quarterback their first priority in this game. NMSU has a very poor defensive squad, but they have scored more than thirty points in each of their past four outings.

Florida provided a blueprint for defeating Georgia when they unveiled their one-dimensional passing attack designed to allow their injured starting quarterback to participate in the game. Fortunately for Georgia, their defense was eventually able to exact enough of a toll on Brantley that he was no longer delivering accurate throws to his receivers in the second half of the game.

A healthy quarterback who is capable of making accurate passes for four quarters could spell big-time trouble for the Georgia defensive backfield, and that would place the Bulldogs in the awkward position of relying on a diminished offensive squad to prevail in a scoring marathon.

I expect Coach Grantham to bring multiple blitz schemes to rattle the NMSU quarterback and snuff out the passing threat early in this game. I doubt that the New Mexico State O-line has the size or strength to overcome such a defensive game plan. Therefore, I predict a continuation of Georgia’s winning streak in today’s contest.

How 2 win,

Just so you know, New Mexico’s opponents are even worse than ours are supposed to be, and they have three wins for the year. Of those three wins, the teams they beat have a total of 2 wins for the year and one of them has not won a game. You are very right though. As long as they keep their errors down and mental mistakes to a minimum, they really should not have anything to worry about today.
