ATHENS – A couple more things on these running back suspensions and then we’ll move on to the next thing for Georgia football.
Georgia coach Mark Richt addressed the situation for the first time during the SEC Coaches Weekly Teleconference on Wednesday. Here’s what he had to say:
“My response is that we’ve always had the utmost integrity in everything we do. We have policies in place in our athletic association that we follow to the T. That’s the case here and it’s been the case since I’ve been at Georgia. We all know that we do our business the way it should be done and we do it with integrity. So people who make comments who don’t know probably shouldn’t, quite frankly, because they don’t know and I’d be able to prove 100 percent they’re wrong. But I’m not going to spend the time doing that. The bottom line is we have rules and we follow them to the T and we have the utmost integrity in how we go about our business. That’s how we’ve built this program since the day I got here and we’re not going to change for any reason.”
“I’ve always felt like was you have to have an element of punishment, something that will sting, something that will make somebody think twice about doing something or other guys who are watching, make them think twice. But you have to educate them, then you have to love them still. They’re still part of this family and we want them to understand we’re supporting them through it. But, you know, if the attitude is right and they’re ready to learn from it and become better for it, discipline can be a very positive thing in that way. Everything I’ve seen to this point has been pointing to that very thing. So I’m pleased with how they’re handling it. And then the other thing is, you’ve got to challenge the rest of your team to pick up the slack, whether it’s the young guys that are going to get this experience playing running back for the University of Georgia, when they thought that probably wasn’t very likely, all of the sudden they’re getting an opportunity to do something they probably dreamed of, which is a great thing. But the rest of the team, the special teams, the defense, the offensive line, the receiving corps, the quarterbacks, everybody’s got to play a little better to make sure that this situation is not going to cost us.”
“Yeah, but I’m not surprised that young men make mistakes. We all know no one is perfect. We know that young guys tend to use bad judgment sometimes. When they do, that’s when we come in and help them out.”
“I think Isaiah is going to do great, I really do. Because I saw how he has handled this mistake to this point and I really feel confident he’s going to be stronger for it. I really do.”
“I’m not sure I can spell his name right now, but it starts with a K,” Richt said of Karempelis. “I like him. He’s a tough kid. He’s got some good run skills. In camp he did a nice job. Harton did a nice job last spring. . . . We’ll have to use [Brandon] Boykin and little more and [Branden] Smith a little more and maybe go some no-back sets. We’ve got enough tight ends. We have some ways we can still move the football.”
ALSO . . .
>>>Here’s A LINK TO UGA’S DRUG-TESTING POLICIES AND PROCEDURES. Everything you need to know is pretty much spelled out there. But since the accused parties are three players at the same position, it would seem reasonable to assume this week’s actions were the result of the “reasonable suspicion” clause. In other words, a coach or administrator suspected something and ordered a test for these guys, which they subsequently failed.
>>>Sooner or later, you have to question Georgia’s recruitment and coaching of the tailback position. Going back to Dontavius Jackson and continuing through Washaun Ealey and Caleb King, this makes six tailbacks in the last 15 months that have been subjected to some sort of suspension, dismissal or general disciplinary action. Bryan McClendon gets paid $200,000 a year to be the Bulldogs’ running backs coach. Ultimately, it is his responsibility to see that his charges are doing things “the Georgia way.”
>>>Finally, here are the options as we know them for playing tailback on Saturday against the New Mexico State Aggies (3-5), who, by the way, rank 111th in the nation in rushing defense (214.38 ypg):

I liked what Richt said and I believe him. He could have saved a lot of wild speculation if he had addressed this at yesterday’s pressor. Always better to get in front of something than to let if fester without any real facts. Perhaps he didn’t have the official results until after the pressor. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one. Bobo as an SEC OC is another matter.

Well according to insider Peterson does, he was hired by McGarity in a secret meeting they had over the weekend of the Boise St/UGA matchup Labor Day. Anyone remember that rumor?

Damn don’t know why I even respond to mostly idiots. It is what it is. To me whatever happened it’s just a big distraction for the goal at hand-win the East. It ticks me of that these players are so self centered that they don’t get the team concept. I think this whole deal comes back to haunt us for the Auburn game big time distraction. I personally believe in the integrity of Richt and Mcgarity.

Dawg1: sure, UGA’s policy is the toughest in America (if you all say so). But not so tough when you get to choose games for suspension rather than following the policy to the letter (which says, VERY NEXT GAME).

The reason it takes as much time as it did is because any positive result must be independently verified by an outside lab, the same way that it is with most employers…You need confirmation before you punish someone, because of issues legal and otherwise. Pretty standard stuff, regardless of the venue; you CYA legally, and then take if from there…

St Mark Richt is a hypocrite – sure – let’s not suspend these guys until we play NMS – who is what – one of the worst teams in D-1?? I have zero confidence in whatever comes out of CMR’s mouth being the truth any longer – I have heard the man literally lye at least 5 times now.

To the people who say you can get a drug test result in five minutes, that is only if your Mama called you up from the basement and handed you the cup. The universities do not do any of the actual testing procedure, other than collecting the urine. Those samples are then placed in a sealed container to be picked up the testing laboratory. The samples are delivered to the laboratory and placed in line for testing. The testing is then done on the samples and if any positives show up, that sample is retested to ensure it is not a false positive. At that point the results go to the transcriptionist to be typed and delivered to the university. That is not done in five minutes, it is not done in two days, it takes as long as it takes, usually 7 to 10 business, not weekend, business days. If the test was done last Thursday I am surprised they got the results back as quickly as they did. As to the rumors circulating around, probably one of the mental midgets that indulged told somebody he thought was his friend that he probably just failed a drug test, from there to Twitter or Facebook in a matter of minutes, and the urine has even left the university yet. Our talking head bobblehead 790 the Zone Mayhem in the a.m. hosts, all bald, transplanted Yankees by the way, then pick up the hue and cry because they “heard rumors” of a failed drug test and will not be satisfied with anything less than a lie detector test and Congressional committee to determine whether or not McGarrity and Richt are telling them the truth. Other universities do not have the problem with out-of-town, no-skin-in-the-game idiots covering their universities and are given the benefit of the doubt. Our group of know-it-all jerks salivate at the thought of something being wrong at the University of Georgia. Quite frankly, I hope they take Dimino off both the Georgia postgame show and off the Falcons beat. Not only is he a jerk, his monotone voice is enough to put you to sleep. Anyone who watched their Georgia postgame show after the Florida game will understand. He spent all his time telling Will Muschamp what an idiot he was to lose the game, with little time left to address Georgia winning the game. Georgia is not perfect, but it does not have to prove anything to the bunch of losers on the radio and the idiots that post on these blogs.

Coach Richt thinks Crowell has learned from his first mistake. Really? Is that why he’s suspended again already? Bottom line: Mark Richt is too soft and will always coddle his players. He should have stood up yesterday and announced all this at his luncheon. Instead, he hid behind the Sports Information Dept. to release the suspensions. Now he is having to play defense. This very slack attitude is why Georgia will never win one NC under this coach. Good OC, great person, good example, but far too lenient and unable to take the really tough stance. In the long run, he is his own worst enemy. All the Kool-Aid drinkers can keep him.
