Georgia’s Jarvis Jones says he’s not considering an early exit for NFL

ATHENS – The Georgia Bulldogs received a lot of accolades following Saturday’s 24-20 win over Florida. Weekly awards and national recognition have been rolling in for individual player performances in the the game.

But probably the biggest treat as far news for Bulldogs fans is Jarvis Jones’ assurance on Monday that he plans on hanging in college for a good while longer.

Jones, who was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week, for his performance against the Gators, met with UGA beat reporters early Monday afternoon to discuss that and his recent nomination as a Butkus Award semifinalists. The Butkus annually goes to the player deemed to be the nation’s best linebacker.

As a redshirt sophomore — he sat out one season after transferring to Georgia from Southern Cal — Jones (6-foot-3, 241 pounds) is eligible to enter the 2012 NFL Draft. As was inevitable with the season he’s having, Jones was asked he was considering that option.

“Not at all,” he said without a moment’s hesitation. “I’m going to be here as long as I can. I mean, I love the university, I love the guys here, I love being in Athens. Most of all, school’s going to come first. And I love my coaches, too. Right now I don’t feel like I’m ready to play in the NFL anyway. I’ve still got a lot to learn.”

Jones looked pretty well-versed against the Gators this past Saturday. The outside linebacker and pass-rushing specialists recorded four sacks — the second-most in a single game in school history — five tackles overall and forced a fumble that Georgia recovered and led to an eventual touchdown.

In addition to the SEC award, which he shared with Arkansas’ Jerry Franklin, Jones’ performance also reaped him the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week, the Rivals.com SEC Player of the Week and the College Football Performance Awards National Player of the Week honors.

“It’s been great,” Jones said. “I think I’ve dealt with it well. It was a big game and I expect it was for the rest of the guys around me. It was Florida and we hadn’t beaten them since ‘07. So we’re proud and walking around with our heads held high right now. But we’ve got to keep pushing and getting better every week.”

Jones now leads the SEC with eight sacks in eight games and is ranked fifth nationally. He helped anchor a defense that held the Gators to minus 19 yards rushing and a single offensive touchdown. In fact, Georgia’s defense has allowed just six touchdowns in the past 24 quarters.

Here’s a few other news and notes stemming from the Bulldogs’ victory in Jacksonville:

  • Georgia senior left tackle Cordy Glenn was named the SEC’s Offensive Lineman of the Week. The 6-5, 348-pound native of Riverdale graded out at a team-best 82 percent with three “intimidation” blocks while starting his 41st consecutive game for the Bulldogs. A captain for the third straight contest, Glenn was a part of an offense that racked up 185 yards on the ground and 354 total yards as the Bulldogs have now scored 20 or more points in every game this season. Glenn also helped give quarterback Aaron Murray time to direct a comeback from a 17-3 early deficit. Georgia finished 3-for-3 on fourth down conversions in the game, scoring touchdowns on a pair of them.
  • Also on Monday, senior cornerback Brandon Boykin was included among 15 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, which is given to the top defensive back in college football. The SEC has seven semifinalists on the list claimed the last two winners of the award (Eric Berry, Tennessee, 2009; Patrick Peterson, LSU, 2010). Georgia has never had a Thorpe winner. The award is named after history’s greatest all-around athlete, Jim Thorpe. Thorpe excelled as a running back, passer and kicker on the offensive side of the ball, but also stood out as a defensive back. A native of Fayetteville, Boykin has started in 32 career games, including the last 16 for the Bulldogs. For the year, he has recorded 31 tackles and his seven pass break-ups, 5.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions are all second on the team. Boykin has also totaled two quarterback hurries and a forced fumble this year, is the SEC’s active leader and fourth in conference history with 2,393 kickoff return yards (24.42 average) and has returned four punts for 43 yards this season.
  • CBS is now considering the Georgia-Auburn game for its national broadcast on Nov. 12.  The SEC’s primary television rights holder exercised its six-day option on Monday, meaning and it will wait until Sunday to decide what games it wants to televise the next weekend. CBS will choose between Georgia’s home game and Alabama at Mississippi State, Florida at South Carolina and Tennessee at Arkansas. The game could also be played on ESPN2 at 6 p.m. or ESPN at 7:45 p.m.

Why would anyone call Florida a cup cake. UF is a class act team and played one heck of a ball game. UGA played them 4 quarters and won. This is the same Florida team that was toe to toe with Alabama before Brantley was hurt. Well he is back now and it showed. UGA still has issues on special teams but the defense is strong and the offense can score when called on to produce. This UGA team could easily upset LSU or Alabama. UGA had AU last year by 24 points but did not play the second half. This will not happen in 2011 look for the Dawgs to put together a complete game and be a spoiler.

TO: The facts, just the facts (tekkerhead) What does your campus look like all week? A cesspool of crime, trash and fear. A delapidated old stadium, only filled when opponents bring fans, in the midst of hell. Foreign students who don’t know a football from a baseball bat. Yes, you have a great school to compare to all of the real college campuses. I would be jealous too. You cannot tailgate there for fear of your life so there will be limited trash generated by the 23,000 who drive in at game time and leave immediately afterward. Have you ever been to a real big time football game? If you weren’t such a loser you might visit other campuses to compare. THWT

Enjoy the win aganist a bitter rival… stop pointing out the bad and start pointing out the good no team is perfect and anyone can be beaten… we just beat fl for the first time in 4 years we all have a reason to celebrate, it doesnt matter what the records are of the teams we have beaten… CMR and of the coaches have done a good job of getting this team to stay together and fight thru adversity…

I’m making a prediction right here and now…. Our #1 defense will NOT give up 10 pts to either Auburn or Tech this year… In fact, I believe we will have our 2nd and 3rd teamers in there by the 4th quarter….
You read classy comments like Jarvis Jones and these kids have their heads screwed on straight… No panic after UF went up 17-3…We got our #1 team back at the Half and it was all over….

I’m missing something…does Murray schedule the games? He only had 2 against ranked teams this year anyway and one was right on his fingertips. Who says that Hutson Mason has us 8-0 and playing for a NC right now? Not me, all I’ve seen him play is 4th qtr against a bunch of bums who were demoralized anyway.

Imagine if you will, CTG goes to a 4-3 for the Tech game and has Washington, Geathers,Jenkins and Abry Jones on the line… Tree, Jarvis Jones and Herrera or Gilliard as LB’s and Shawn Williams at SS to mop up…. Jarvis , Jenkins and Geathers handle the “Bam” fullback, and Tree and Herrera mop up the outside QB or pitch guys… it won’t even be fair this year….

But when those $$$$ start flying around, he’s got to go for it.

Florida had a senior QB / Florida had a supposed genius for an offensive coordinator / Florida supposedly had a defensive guru for a head coach / Florida supposedley had the best recruiting class ever just a year ago / Florida has two of the fastest RB’s in the country…………and yet somehow, poor Aaron Murray who hasn’t beat anybody (he really needs to schedule better teams for us to play) – and our poor special teams (we don’t have a coach for those poor walk ons) – and our no depth backfield (gee, we just didn’t pamper Ealey and King enough , I guess) – and our depleted receiveing corps (darn those injuries) – and yet – AND YET…………. we still went to Jacksonville and GOT US SOME ALLIGATOR SHOES AND WALLETS TO ENJOY FOR THE COMING YEAR! Thomas Brown, according CFBStats.com UF has the #14 D in the nation! Plus, UF was 4-3 when they played us, right? And the three losses were without their senior QB, with one each to LSU and UA, #1 and #2. UF has a very good team, and you should be proud of the victory and the team. Also, Murray has put up impressive performances with plenty of points to win against many highly ranked teams, like #1 last year. It wasn’t his fault we lost. I think that your whole thesis is very misleading. You make some good points, but that one in particular isn’t valid. Just ask most fans if they would trade their QB for Murray. We are very blessed to have Murray imho.

The Bulldawgs are better for one reason… They have a real DC from the pros and runs a superior 3-4 defense. The 3-4 is not run by most college teams because they can’t get the 3 most important pieces. The Nosegauard and two outside linebackers. The Bulldawgs can!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. The Special Teams can be fixed fairly easy. At seasons end contact Joe De-Cammila from the pros and make him an offer he can’t refuse. It’s not the players it’s bad coaching. Apparently the dogs don’t have a guy or guys that understand special teams. It has been a problem since Richt got here. Please Richt, pick up the phone and call Mike Smith, get Morten Andersons phone number and call him. Offer him a consulting fee to come help out your kicker. The Falcons did it and their kicker has hit 27 in a row. Hire a OL coach from the pros which will help in recruiting because recruits understand that he knows what it takes to become a pro. Why do you think Saban has surrounded himself with pro coaches? Uga is second only to Texas in yearly football revenue and is valued as a football program more than any school except Texas. It’s time to rise up and become the Team we were headed towards when BVG was allowed to walk. That mistake cost The UGA Aapproximately $100,000.00 in lost revenue. Please hire only proven coaches. UAB Coach with your job on the line!!!!!! Damm Richt you are smarter than that. Get rid of Lilly to make room for our new Special Teams Coach. He is the last Florida State Coach that has no ideal about fundamental football. Not one Bobby Bowden coach has been worth a damm. He could only win by superior talent.

We won, it was just a win. Nothing More. FLA is not that good this year. 4 wins in 22 years against a bad FLA team. Come On folks. Our 6 wins are against no team with a winning record, combined record of these teams are 21-27 (6-25 in their conferences–which means they beat up on some really bad non confernce or FCS teams). In the end it was just a WIN. Go DAWGS

Ill have to agree with an earlier post. Beating Florida was a huge mental ‘gasm. I believe Murray will play much more relaxed and confident. And him feeeling relaxed will spread to the whole team. That last drive Saturday night he looked different. Even though Florida wasnt a ranked team, the monkey is off his back.

The coverage of the game left out 1 MAJOR fact….the special teams were not just “poor” as the AJC stated, they were reprehensible…totally incompetent. Going into the season I said the Georgia special teams were the best in the country…man, was I wrong. They managed to leave or give 16 points due to missed FG, and returns…UNBELIEVABLE. With the $$$ the Dawgs have is there any reason NOT to have a special teams coach..JUST UNBELIEVABLE…..oh, on a side note…why can’t we just kick off into the end zone…Just a thot..

If it wasn’t for the defense we lose..again…I think Walsh needs a sports psychologist..He is still a great kicker ( even tho he hasn’t shown it)…It’s just between the ears now.

I said after the first two games we wud run the table..If we can get the special teams to play like they shud we will run the table.

By the way, this team cannot fall asleep against anyone.

If we are to dismiss all of the dogs 6 wins because of who they played, then lets dismiss all of tech’s except for Clemson. Now, let’s dismiss the win over Clemson because of the 2 defeats to Lowly Virginia and Miami. The point is, Uga played a good Florida team, their nemisis, and won. Murray had to make 2 exceptional passes to Bennet and King to have this happen. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the gators beat South Carolina. Maybe if the dogs win out, some of you haters will stop your whining.

to Still@ the Bar – I usually ignore your kind b/c eventually you will go away – but I have to respond to your post about AM not making good passes – this hust shows that you know nothing about football – the play called for AM to pass behind the receive on both plays – the rec knows this the cb does not – so #1 it takes a spot on throw by the qb and perfect timing by the receiver – that is how football is played

Very proud of the Dawgs on Sat. It wasn’t the prettiest of wins, but it was a win nonetheless. This team did not quit despite being down by 14 pts. That is a great sign of what is to come for this team, they have a lot of heart and do not get rattled when losing. If the offense can get going and the special teams work out the kinks, then I feel confident that they can stay on the field with any team in the country. I am happy that Jones plans to stay at UGA his final year. He is a DGD and we are lucky to have him. GO DAWGS!
