WHAT THEY SAID
Postgame quotes . . .
GEORGIA HEAD COACH MARK RICHT
“To God be the glory. I’m thankful for what just happened. I know it was just a ballgame, but it seemed like a lot more than that. Just to see our players and fans celebrate in this place especially was awesome. I’m very glad to be a part of this today.
“Thankfully, we got a couple of turnovers deep in our territory, and both of our touchdown came on fourth down calls. They were very clutch plays. It takes those types of plays to win this ballgame.”
On the SEC Eastern Division race…
“In hindsight, I can say this now that it’s over, but this was more than just another game to win and to keep pace in the Eastern Division. You could see it with our guys, but we didn’t want to try to make it any bigger than it needed to be. We wanted them to focus on their jobs, and I thought they did that. It wasn’t looking good early on, and credit Florida for what they did in their two-week period. But down by seven at halftime, we still had a good feeling. We were in good shape.”
On what was said in the Georgia locker room at halftime…
“I didn’t see the deer in the headlights look. What I saw was a bunch of guys focused and believing. I thought our staff did a nice job of making adjustments to what they were doing. We had a good plan in the second half, and our guys executed well. And we finished the game without the drama at the end.”
On Georgia’s defense…
“Our defense was fantastic. To start the game, they didn’t have a back in the backfield, so they weren’t really trying to run the ball. Quite frankly, we didn’t have many answers early on. We were able to force a couple of turnovers and took care of business.”
GEORGIA PLAYER QUOTES
Sophomore quarterback Aaron Murray . . .
“All of those guys did a great job of going up and making a play when it counted. They went up high in the air and basically wrestled it way from the defenders to make some awesome catches. Those guys were huge for us tonight.” On beating Florida: “It’s just a great feeling. Everyone has been saying how lopsided the series with Florida has been over the years but this team was 0-0 going into this game. And now we’re 1-0. We have been working on a lot of the plays that worked for two straight weeks now and I think us hitting some of those huge touchdown catches changed the momentum of this game.”
Sophomore outside linebacker Jarvis Jones . . .
Freshman receiver Michael Bennett . . .
FLORIDA HEAD COACH WILL MUSCHAMP
Opening statement:
“We had our opportunities in the game. We had two turnovers inside our 25-yard line; gave up 14 points on two critical fourth down plays and a lack of being able to run the football – too many penalties in critical situations. Obviously John went and we got some performance on his part, very proud of him and his effort, he’s a guy who really lays it on the line. We couldn’t get him under center to do some of the things we wanted to do, we knew that going into the game. We felt like we had some things in the throwing game and that’s why we stayed with what we wanted to do in that situation. We have to find some ways to run the football. We cannot be so one-dimensional and that’s something we have to work on. We got a turnover inside the 10, end up with two sacks and we’re out of field goal range. Those are very frustrating to deal with, but we had our opportunities in the last two ball games. We have to close it out and win those games.”
On Brantley’s ankle status affecting the run game:
“Well there’s no question it affects the run and we run the ball so much east and west – we need to be able to run the ball downhill and when you’re in the gun it’s hard to run the ball consistently downhill. So again, he’s limited with his ankle but we felt like he gave us opportunity to be successful in the game so that’s what we went with. I’d do it again, John played well and we just need to figure out how we can run the ball a little bit more effectively.”
On the rest of the season:
“I just go to work. You know you have to go back and go to work, evaluate where we are and figure out some different answers. We had some different things planned in the game, but we stayed with that because we felt that gave us the best opportunity to be successful against this group. They’re big thick inside, we just wanted to spread them out and try to run the ball and we didn’t have success doing it. ”
On Jarvis Jones and rushing the ball:
“Jarvis is a good player, he’s a good rusher – their best rusher. He did a good job, but again, in those situations you have to be able to have some sort of run game to slow down the rush and it’s tough on the tackles to continue to kick out and block the edge rushers. We need to go back and evaluate the run game and figure out ways to run the football.”
FLORIDA PLAYERS
Sophomore Kicker Brandon Phillips . . .
Redshirt Sophomore Center Jonotthan Harrison . . .
Senior Tackle Jaye Howard . . .
On dealing with losses: “It’s tough to deal with, but all we can do is continue to go out and show up every week and just give it our best. Since I’ve been at Florida, I’ve only been through one difficult season, and that was last year. It’s just going to develop a competing edge in me so I can take it to the next level. Everyone’s taking it hard. It’s four games in a row that we’ve lost now. The only thing we can do is keep the team motivated and keep pushing. The season’s still not over. We can go out and win and get a good bowl game, so that’s what we’re playing for now.”

Someone please clarify: Is this the worse gator team in 24 or 20 years? Is the popular UGA win stat over 21, 22 years or perhaps 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28. Maybe it is 11 years. I am so confused. What is Will Muschamp’s record in this series? I bet Thomas Brown can clarify.

Great win mutts,a win is a win,is a win.actually it could have been a beat down with average special team play.I have to say your blogs are conflicted with tons of naysayers….you have great chance of running the table.unless my jackets play like they did Sat nite..would be cool going into that game with 2 local teams playing for their conference championships.

Thomas Brown, YEAH I did post THAT, but I did NOT post the first post you referred to….it’s called cutting up and having a good time, like I thought these blogs were supposed to be for. Did it ever occur to you that there might be ANOTHER “Harold” out there? Notice I used a contraction. For you to be able to go back a month and pull something like that up is absolutely mind boggling. You really do need something to do.

No UF only offensive touchdown was on a blown coverage. Our forth down TD’s were acutually with good coverage just a receiver making a great play on the ball. Obiviously you did not watch the game.

UGA under Grantham has become one of the best defensive teams in the country. The defense has been improving throughout the season and is likely to continue to do so. All the starters are healthy again; their replacements, including all the freshmen, have gained valuable experience–giving the team impressive depth.
And what a pick-up Jarvis Jones is. He seems bound for All-American teams.
I tip my hat to Grantham and his assistants and all the players on defense. A very impressive performance yesterday.

The most improved player for the Dawgs this year is Michael Bennett. The guy is catching everything thrown at him and coming up clutch! We need to find a way to get the ball to him more.
Hats off to Jarvis Jones… just an unreal game – the guy is far exceeding expectations this year, which is nice to say about a UGA player!
This was a HUGE win for Mark Richt and the staff. I thought Dodo called a decent game, it’s just hard when you’ve got Crowell taking every other play off and Murray missing wide open players. To win out, we’re going to need significant improvement from Murray and the Special Teams.

Its sad how BoBo can’t really call a game against a team at its worst…Florida is at it worst and we beat them by Four points…I see why we need a change at the head coach position and the offensive coordinator position..We will never be at the elite of the SEC as long as we have these nice guys with no back bone as coaches……Im very religous but Richt you have to seperate football and church..Its just making me sick seeing this act of not scoring points against a team at it worst..We havent beaten anybody worth talking about….

It was a win, which doesn’t happen often for Richt when playing FL. But that’s it. If I were a UGA fan I wouldn’t be shooting my mouth off too much. Let us see what happens against AU and GT, which proved it still has some potential. McGarity said the total season would determine Richt’s future, not one game. Winning or losing against FL would not in and of itself get Richt fired or retained, if you believe McGarity. I suspect the SEC championship game will have a lot to do with McGarity’s final decision regarding Richt, if he is lucky enough to be coaching in the game. A beatdown over national TV, as has happened to Richt on numerous occasions, may be more detrimental to his future then not making it to the championship game at all. For now take the win for what it’s worth: a win and nothing more.

Dawgs…you need to act like you’ve been here before…with a win that is. As an observer with nothing vested in either team, I’d have to say Florida GAVE that game to you. They fumbled the ball TWICE inside their own 20 yard line that resulted in Georgia putting 14 on the board. It’s not like Georgia marched down the field having to actually EARN those points….just sayin.
There was an obvious pass interference by Georgia against Florida on that one play that would have given the Gators a first down and probably another 7 on the board with a new set of downs. But the refs didn’t call it and the Gators punted. It seemed to be the turning point of the game and the Gators just couldn’t find their mojo after that. I would wager a good sum that on any other day, Florida can win over the Dawgs. It just wasn’t their day and Georgia obviously had the win at their backs.
And seriously…did an earlier poster ACTUALLY mention BCS Title contender? Seriously? uh-hem. Got to go through Bama or LSU at the Dome first and just don’t see that happening.

What a lot of you mutt fans don’t understand is the true parity of college foootball,if you play good defense, don’t turn the ball over and play good special teams, you have a chance every week…Bama and lsu are beatable and you only have to play one of them..you have an excellent chance to play in the SEC champion ship game,no way S.C. beats Fla or Ark away..Good luck,I think we have a good chance to play in the Acc chapinship game and that makes the Tech-Ga game huge here in Atl.Go Yellow Jackets

I’m sure all Dog fans are proud of the win over the Gators, But before you order tickets to the National Championship game take a look at what really transpired in this game, First the kicking game has become the weak point of this team followed by special teams which is probably the worst in the nation and Coach Richt still refuses to hire a coach for special teams, Next Murray for some reason has lost his touch on long passes, The two touchdown passes were thrown up for grabs and if not for spectacular catches would have been incomplete, Last the running game is a mess, Crowell has a long way to go and Sammuel is more of a fullback, Thomas is too small (why would you run Thomas up the middle?) The only constant is the Defense which won the game.

Pachoo,
Concerning being too CMR being too religious. He is not religious. He has been saved by the Son of God. No, God does not orchestrate football games, nor was CMR implicating that. To give God the glory was not thanking God that the dawgs scored more points than the gators. It was simply thanking the Lord for his players, their abilities, and his opportunity to coach. Not trying to speak on CMR’s behalf, but this is far closer to what he meant.

To the blogger complaining about UGA not getting respect from the coaches’ polls. One explanation could be that some of those coaches may have played UGA or watched some of UGA’s games.
I thought UGA played Fl. with a lot of class. Few penalties and I did not see “cheap shots” on Fl.’s cripple qb or personal fouls. Saw an Arkansas player get ejected for a ps foul. He didn’t act like he understood his behavior.
Do you suppose Grantham could take on the job coaching Special teams too?
For those suggesting Richt get a contract extension to faciliate recuiting, I would suggest there be a clause in the extension that related to his performance against Fl., a deduction for each lose, an increase for wins.
