Richt expresses thanks, relief for hard-fought win over Gators

WHAT THEY SAID

Postgame quotes . . .

GEORGIA HEAD COACH MARK RICHT

“To God be the glory. I’m thankful for what just happened. I know it was just a ballgame, but it seemed like a lot more than that. Just to see our players and fans celebrate in this place especially was awesome. I’m very glad to be a part of this today.

“Thankfully, we got a couple of turnovers deep in our territory, and both of our touchdown came on fourth down calls. They were very clutch plays. It takes those types of plays to win this ballgame.”

On the SEC Eastern Division race…

“In hindsight, I can say this now that it’s over, but this was more than just another game to win and to keep pace in the Eastern Division. You could see it with our guys, but we didn’t want to try to make it any bigger than it needed to be. We wanted them to focus on their jobs, and I thought they did that. It wasn’t looking good early on, and credit Florida for what they did in their two-week period. But down by seven at halftime, we still had a good feeling. We were in good shape.”

On what was said in the Georgia locker room at halftime…

“I didn’t see the deer in the headlights look. What I saw was a bunch of guys focused and believing. I thought our staff did a nice job of making adjustments to what they were doing. We had a good plan in the second half, and our guys executed well. And we finished the game without the drama at the end.”

On Georgia’s defense…

“Our defense was fantastic. To start the game, they didn’t have a back in the backfield, so they weren’t really trying to run the ball. Quite frankly, we didn’t have many answers early on. We were able to force a couple of turnovers and took care of business.”

GEORGIA PLAYER QUOTES

Sophomore quarterback Aaron Murray . . .

“All of those guys did a great job of going up and making a play when it counted. They went up high in the air and basically wrestled it way from the defenders to make some awesome catches. Those guys were huge for us tonight.” On beating Florida: “It’s just a great feeling. Everyone has been saying how lopsided the series with Florida has been over the years but this team was 0-0 going into this game. And now we’re 1-0. We have been working on a lot of the plays that worked for two straight weeks now and I think us hitting some of those huge touchdown catches changed the momentum of this game.”

Sophomore outside linebacker Jarvis Jones . . .

  • On the victory over the Gators: “Our seniors and coaches deserved this win. This was a big game for (Coach Mark Richt), it was huge game for the SEC race. We just came out and did what we needed to do the whole game.”
  • On his four-sack performance: “The coaches just put us in a great position to have success tonight. Coach (Todd) Grantham gave us their weaknesses and we tried to take advantage of them. If something I do helps us win games and helps this team, I’ll try my best to do it.”

Freshman receiver Michael Bennett . . .

  • On his touchdown catch on fourth down: “It was just a fade route and Aaron threw it in the spot where only I could catch it. I had to go up and snag it and then kind of wrestle it away from their guy. I was glad I was able to come through for the team. I thought Tavarres King’s catch was also unbelievable too, he really stepped up for us big.”
  • On Georgia’s passing game in the second half: “Our coaches kind of changed up our game plan for the second half. They thought we could gash them on deep pass plays and that’s what we did.”

FLORIDA HEAD COACH WILL MUSCHAMP

Opening statement:

“We had our opportunities in the game. We had two turnovers inside our 25-yard line; gave up 14 points on two critical fourth down plays and a lack of being able to run the football – too many penalties in critical situations. Obviously John went and we got some performance on his part, very proud of him and his effort, he’s a guy who really lays it on the line. We couldn’t get him under center to do some of the things we wanted to do, we knew that going into the game. We felt like we had some things in the throwing game and that’s why we stayed with what we wanted to do in that situation. We have to find some ways to run the football. We cannot be so one-dimensional and that’s something we have to work on. We got a turnover inside the 10, end up with two sacks and we’re out of field goal range. Those are very frustrating to deal with, but we had our opportunities in the last two ball games. We have to close it out and win those games.”

On Brantley’s ankle status affecting the run game:

“Well there’s no question it affects the run and we run the ball so much east and west – we need to be able to run the ball downhill and when you’re in the gun it’s hard to run the ball consistently downhill. So again, he’s limited with his ankle but we felt like he gave us opportunity to be successful in the game so that’s what we went with. I’d do it again, John played well and we just need to figure out how we can run the ball a little bit more effectively.”

On the rest of the season:

“I just go to work. You know you have to go back and go to work, evaluate where we are and figure out some different answers. We had some different things planned in the game, but we stayed with that because we felt that gave us the best opportunity to be successful against this group. They’re big thick inside, we just wanted to spread them out and try to run the ball and we didn’t have success doing it. ”

On Jarvis Jones and rushing the ball:

“Jarvis is a good player, he’s a good rusher – their best rusher. He did a good job, but again, in those situations you have to be able to have some sort of run game to slow down the rush and it’s tough on the tackles to continue to kick out and block the edge rushers. We need to go back and evaluate the run game and figure out ways to run the football.”

FLORIDA PLAYERS

Sophomore Kicker Brandon Phillips . . .

  • On getting his chance to start: “Coach told me earlier in the week that I’d be doing kick off. He told me about 10 minutes before the game that I’d be doing field goals because Caleb Sturgis was down, so I just had to step up, pick up the slack, and do what I needed to do. I was excited. I’ve been waiting all season to get my chance and I finally got it.”
  • On missing his first FG: “Muschamp came up to me and told me to relax, and pretty much the whole team boosted me up on that one and helped me get through the rest of the game. It calmed me down after that field goal and I was able to do what I needed to do for the rest of the game.”

Redshirt Sophomore Center Jonotthan Harrison . . .

  • On generating a consistent running game: “We had a good two weeks at practice, and during the week we actually generated a running game pretty well, but we weren’t executing plays as well as we should have been.”
  • On tonight’s penalties: “I can only speak for myself but one time I was having difficulty hearing the quarterback, and another time I did roll the snap back.”
  • On offensive change with Brantley in shotgun: “A lot of our plays that we run under center we tweaked a little bit to run them under the gun.”
  • On Florida’s frustration level: “I can’t speak for the whole team obviously, but individually, it’s very frustrating. On certain things, we’re just killing ourselves basically. I’m just killing myself. We could perform a lot better than we actually are. Like I said, it’s a matter of executing and just finishing everything.”
  • On priorities for team: “Executing plays, like I’ve said many times, and just having everyone completely focused on the offense. If everyone works as a team, then we’ll be successful.”

Senior Tackle Jaye Howard . . .

On dealing with losses: “It’s tough to deal with, but all we can do is continue to go out and show up every week and just give it our best.  Since I’ve been at Florida, I’ve only been through one difficult season, and that was last year. It’s just going to develop a competing edge in me so I can take it to the next level. Everyone’s taking it hard. It’s four games in a row that we’ve lost now. The only thing we can do is keep the team motivated and keep pushing. The season’s still not over. We can go out and win and get a good bowl game, so that’s what we’re playing for now.”

Sucks about lee. He was one of our better blockers. Hope Samuel is ok, but I’m worried. He wasn’t putting any pressure on his leg when they helped him off.

I also think we should abandon traditional special teams. Never kick a fg, always kick on sides kicks, and always go for it on 4th excep in obvious punting situations. And yes, I’m dead serious.

I hope Coach Richt going for it twice on 4th and long instead of bringing in Blair Walsh for field goals means he realizes Aaron Murphy and the O-line stands a better chance of scoring than Walsh does, and figures out a way to bench Walsh for the rest of the season unless it’s a blowout win like they should have vs. New Mexico State next week and Kentucky the week after next. Walsh very easily could have single handedly lost the game today had Richt had him kick FGs instead of going for TDs on 4th and long. Walsh has sucked all year. Bench him Coach.

And yes Red Dog you’re right about your reply to Pachoo. Richt said to Tracy Wolfson, “First off to God be the glory.” He wasn’t saying God gave them this win or anything like that. So before you go off on a tangent and sound as asinine as you think Coach Richt sounded, get the quote right.

I think it’s time to get our backup place-kicker in the game…for everything – kickoffs and field goals for sure – might let Walsh do the extra points if for no other reason than to remind him of how to do his job. Don’t know what we’re gonna do for another punter, maybe go for it on all fourth downs?

As happy as you need to be for Richard Samuels, and I hope to heavens that he’ll be able to play from here on out, we still need more help at running back. What’s up with Boo? Is there anybody else that might be able to help? Scott-Wesley? Some of those linebackers? A walk-on? At least they didn’t fumble.

Oh yeah, is it just me or does it appear that Muschamp would rather eat a pile of dog she-ite than complement Georgia’s football team? Appears to me that he all but said ‘If we’d (UF) have been better we wouldn’t have been so bad.’

Stinger,

Clemson was NBR 5 like I am the coach at USC. As was proven by your early ranking at Tech. the pollsters haven’t got the slightest idea how to rank teams this year, or almost any year for that fact. Your team got beat by Miami, U of VA. and didn;t look real good against Maryland, who beat Miami.
You are still going to get your butt handed to you, by UGA after Thanksgiving, so enjoy your wins against weak ACC opponents for now, and get ready to fall once again to UGA. That you would even be on this blog, tells tons about how small victories being enough for you to be satisfied with. To have to come onto a blog concerning any SEC team or game, tells me that you are satisfied and delirious enough to brag about it. Clemson was evidently highly over rated, just like you were after having feasted on little FCS schools. You failed, of course to mention that your mighty tech team lost to two teams not in the 25, even if you believe the polls, while UGA lost to the legitimate top 5 team in one poll, and gave the game to the over rated, now, SC team. They were legitimate at the first of the year when they had Lattimore, but now, at nbr 13, they are over rated. Still they would eat you up and spit out the pieces.

GO DAWGS and GATA

I don’t see why all you cheerleaders are so thrilled with this game. Yes we won, but…….we ain’t all that. Our D played a great game. Outside of that, we looked very, very average. Our special teams play was pathetic. Both our kickers forgot how to kick. Our offense barely managed 2 TD’s on 4th down desperation passes. And that was after getting penalty yardage that kept the short drives alive. You cheerleaders think we are near the same level with the leaders of the SEC Western Conference? Not even close.

Keith Marshall…..please committ to the DAWGS this week. It was great to get the win. When a team can play bad and win it says so much about the talent level on the team. Still waiting for the DAWGS to put four quarters together. It’s gotten in Walsh’s head, not sure I want him trying to kick a game winning field goal in the last seconds. Butler will be ok, but don’t be surprised if he punts one into the butt of his blocking backs soon, really comes close. Just hope Murray had a bad game. Just throw it, quit aiming it. GO DAWGS!

So far this season, we have not beat 1 single team with a winning record as of November 1, 2011. Not 1. We are the # 56 Total Offense, slightly worse than Mark Richt’s 11-year avg # 52 Total Offense. Aaron Murray has us # 79 in the nation being sacked. We had 31 players who should have lined-up vs Florida at kick-off whom Mark Richt gave Scholarships to to do just that, and did not. We are # 104 in net punting, playing walk-ons. We are # 68 in punt returns, playing walk-ons. We are # 53 in kick-off returns, playing walk-ons. We are # 80 in stopping kick-off returns, playing walk-ons. The issues are : (1) Special Teams Coach, or lack thereof. (2) Mike Bobo as Offensive Coordinator, who has our team start out slowly and rely upon our Defense to bail him out, which they did last night. (3) Not being able to beat anything but sorry football teams all season long, not 1 of which has a winning record as of today. (4) We have lost 17 such games in the 11 years of Mark Richt, teams who do not end up in the Top 25 had they not beat us, none of the 17. (5) We cannot beat the teams who do end up in the Top 25 at 17-26 all 11 years. (6) We cannot beat the teams who do end up in the Top 10 at 3-10 all 11 years. (7) We have fans who think beating a team who is the # 94 Total Offense in the nation, who is the # 114 Turnover Margin in the nation, and a team who is # 120 in Penalties makes us GREAT or set to run the table when that better include playing Alabama or LSU and a great bowl opponent for the 1st time in 11 seasons to-date; and it is these fans – the DISNEYdawgs.com – that have caused us to settle in to this mediocrity of accepting all this just sorry football, including a hapless game between 2 teams – neither of which has beat ANYONE all season long, while both looked totally inept on Offense all night long, a battle of loser offenses neither of which can do anything against any good opponent and have proved that all season long. Beating Florida means we got a win against yet again another team without a winning record – just exactly like the 6 wins in a row all 6 against teams none of whom have a winning record this morning. We have not arrived yet; and, on that note RED DOG 77, we agree. I will leave you with your quote this morning :

Thomas Brown – you loser – what are you, an atheist who hates the fact Richt is a Christian? Why the hate? RICHT AIN’T GOING ANYWHERE! Richt doesn’t have to win the SEC east or anything else – he’s doing a good job this year – 6 wins in a row and we are in the hunt for the East title. Isn’t this where we should be every year? Right there at the top for the division title? WHAT THE H*LL ELSE DO YOU WANT? Richt’s not resonsible for the entire record against FLorida over the last 21 years – what a stupid comment! You argue like a girl. The only thing we could have done better so far is beat SC – we played a bad game – IT HAPPENS. We don’t win all of the time – Florida is not going to win a NC every year – teams win and teams lose -the difference is – WHEN URBAN CRYER STARTED TO GO THROUGH A TOUGH CYCLE HE BAILED OUT – RICHT HAS DEDCIDED TO STAY AND FIGHT LIKE A D*MN GOOD DAWG!

Brown – what do you want Richt to do – personally schedule only great, top 5 teams so that you can say that we only play and beat or lose to “great teams”? We play the schedule we are given. We beat the teams we have to face. I say again, Richt isn’t going anywhere – get off that line. It’s pubescent and illogical and smacks of a deep seated hatred of the man rather than his true value to our program. This is not Florida’s worst team in 24 years / you are going by the record alone and that is not the whole story – that’s just the press line – they have played the best two teams in the country – they just had what many called “the best recruiting class ever”, they have two of the fastest players ever to put on a college uniform, they have a good QB, the have a three time Super Bowl winning offensive coordinator and a head coach many compare to Saban in regards to his defensive prowess – how all of that translates into their worst in 24 years team baffles me. I’m not saying we dont play sloppy / I have said as much – we do at times – that much is obvious to anybody with eyes! What’s your point? That all of the teams problems are because Richt is a bad coach? Some of that falls on him – some of it falls on the players and other coaches as well. And by the way – the fact that you seem to cut and paste and catalogue every comment posted on this board tells me YOU HAVE NO LIFE! I do! See ya’ later!

Where did I say Richt was going anywhere in this blog ? Liar. You come in here and do not own up to your own statements and MAKE UP whatever you want to say that you are replying to. Were you even watching the game last night ? I am basing Florida’s team on being # 120 in penalties, # 94 Total Offense in the nation, who is the # 114 Turnover Margin in the nation and how Chris Rainey handed us the game with his fumble the officials on the field did not want to call correctly. They suck. They played like crud. You just don’t like it that I want you to hold yourself responsible for your own statements, and to QUIT telling lies, tell me again, sir.

Yes, sir. I hold Mark Richt responsible for this football program. And, yes, I feel last night’s game was “SLOPPY” to quote you sir. Against a 6th team in a row who NONE OF WHOM HAVE A WINNING RECORD. Florida is this or that, you say, excuse me bubba, Florida is NOTHING.

The momentum was with Florida in the beginning, but the UGA defense just beat them down. Even with UF up 17-3 and everything going their way, UGA never let up. That’s the kind of Bulldog play we’ve been waiting to see!

Some great plays by UGA’s wide receivers, they are to be commended, but the game ball goes to Richard Samuel IV, he simply wouldn’t be denied.

Inspired play by UGA. This game was special.

To the uninformed who want a special teams coach. The NCAA only allows each team to have 10 coaches on staff.

Some of you people just do not get it. It was a great win regardless of how good or bad Florida is. They are going to give their all and and play as hard as they can. Was it pretty, no, but a win is a win not matter how good or bad we played.

Good to have a win against the Gators, Dawg fans!

While our offense make some mistakes, when we needed them to the most, Murray and company DID make the plays that were necessary to win the game!

The defense as a whole was stellar, with quite some tremendous, individual play!

Fans, coaches and players know we need to find better special teams play and I’m hopeful they will. If we don’t, winning forward could be difficult with giving away and setting up so many easy points.

I saw some great, individual play on both sides of the ball of which Dawg fans should be proud.

Let’s enjoy this win, and, with some luck from Arkansas against South Carolina next week, move forward towards the SEC Championship game.

Proud of my Bulldogs; coaches and players, and the Bulldawg Nation that is supportive of them!

Brown, you said that the Dawgs should put starters in on kick off and I believe that on the last kick off they were on the coverage team. I will check when I watch the game again to be sure. I think CMR is doing more than you give him credit for.

Also UF has a pretty stout defense and look what Vandy did to Arkansas yesterday. They almost pulled the upset.

men listen up … i know it was not perfect and that was the worst looking Florida team since ‘79. But it was a win vs. Florida in Jacksonville. Enjoy it and move on with your lives.

For all you griping about Bobo’s play calling- I don’t get it. He called a great game tonight. There was a lack of execution. Murray missed so many wide open receivers. There were also several missed blocks by Crowell. Watch the game again, it was not the play calling.

We still need an offensive coordinator that knows what to do inside the 30 and has the better sense not to run a 156 lb running back straight up the middle

I don’t care if UF was the worst team in history we have started a trend with this series. We are taking back Jax!!!!! I think UF will be even worse next year!!! Ha!

Flat tire: I see changes at OC after the season. And hire a dang special teams coach.
