Georgia uses defense to best Gators, 24-20

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The SEC East-leading Georgia Bulldogs played like the underdog and, for once in a blue moon, came out on top against the Florida Gators.

Florida managed just one first down in the second half and the Bulldogs’ came back from a 17-3 deficit to edge the Gators 24-20 here at EverBank Field on Saturday. The win was Georgia’s sixth in a row, snapped a three-game losing streak against Florida and was just the fourth in the last 22 years against one of their most bitter rivals.

With the victory, Georgia (6-2, 5-1 SEC) remains in at least a tie for first atop the SEC’s Eastern Division. South Carolina (6-1, 4-1), which holds the tiebreaker due to its 45-42 win in Athens in September, was playing Tennessee in Knoxville late Saturday night.

It was the fourth loss in a row for the Gators (4-4, 2-4), who are in their first year under coach Will Muschamp, a UGA graduate and football letterman. It’s the first time Florida has lost four consecutive games since 1988, when Georgia also handed it loss number four.

After giving up a 72-yard pass play on Florida’s first offensive play of the game, the Bulldogs bowed up to allow just 154 total yards the rest of the way, including 19 yards passing in the second half.

Georgia outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, who was named a Butkus Award finalists just this past week, recorded four of the Bulldogs’ six quarterback sacks in the game. John Brantley, who ended starting for the Gators, was 12-of-33 passing for 245 yards.

The Bulldogs scored two of their three touchdowns on fourth-down passes from quarterback Aaron Murray, one to freshman Michael Bennett and another to junior Tavarres King. Murray was 15-of-34 passing for 169 yards and threw one interception.

Tailback Richard Samuel recorded the other TD on a four-yard run in the fourth quarter and finished with 58 yards rushing in relief of injured starter Isaiah Crowell. The game ended after Samuel’s first-down run to the Gators’ 1-yard line.

Crowell missed most of the second half with a shin contusion but managed to finish with 81 yards on 18 carries.

True, Miami, but all of UGA’s best players are freshmen or sophomores-Mitchell, Conley, Bennett, Jarvis Jones, Ogletree, Herrerra, Jenkins, Geathers, etc. all needed to get the feeling of beating UF to get that streak going in the right direction.

Well we have to make some of our regular rotation players get out there on Special teams because our walk-ons and some of our frosh are not getting it done on these kickoffs. And Murray looked like he needed a relieve himself out there on some of those passes.

miamidawg . . . Would you rather the dawgs lose to a weak Florida team? Do not hold it against the Dawgs that the Gators were unranked. That’s their fault. They have a lot of talent. Are they weak because of coaching? Bobo blew the first two possessions of the 3rd with horrible play calling. He’s my biggest concern.

GREAT WIN DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!

Today’s game reminded me of the way the Dawg’s use to win games back in the Dooley days-Just enough offense but GREAT DEFENSE-good job guys but special teams a still a problem. Gary Danielson the CBS announcer even said the Mark Richt needs to hire a Special Teams Coach because it almost got us again today.

Points we gave Florida today:

99 yard kickoff return = 7pts
70 yard kickoff return = 3pts

Blair Walsh missed FG’s = 6pts

When you add up the points we gave florida 10 points & the 6 points we lost our else on the missed FG’s it looks like we cost ourselves a total of 16 points. Special Teams was the difference between us beating Florida by only 4 points instead of 20 points but I’m very thankful that we won the game.

teewest . . . If I am Hutson Mason, I do transfer. Richt is going to play Murray every snap unless he is injured. DJ Shockley had one great year but the lack of 2-3 years of fulltime experience got him drafted in the 6th round and a short leash to prove himself. He needed more game experience than he got in college. If you have real pro potential, you ought not take one for the team. Let the players who do not have pro potential take one for the team.

As a lifelong Dawgs fan, I’ll gladly take this win. But unless Bobo invents a game plan that doesn’t limit the offense to ‘run, run, pass, punt’… even if they win the SEC east, they don’t stand a chance against the SEC west champ or whomever they might encounter in a bowl game.

These guys remind me of Dooley’s Junkyard Dawgs that won in spite of themselves… except that them old Dawgs had a gameplan.

Not a georgia fan but watched the game. Its hard to win with special teams that look like special ed. Despite that, GA has a really impressive defensive. Not impressed with the offense. Murray seems overrated but he’s young. Maybe in a couple of years this team could be special. But right now, they are young and really not even in the league of the elite SEC west teams.

As the late, great Jackie Gleason used to say, “How Sweet It Is!!!”. Ugly, ugly win but the end result was awesome. Great plays by Jarvis Jones on D, and Michael Bennet and Tavares King on the touchdown catchesd. Murray made the perfect passes when we absolutely HAD to have them. Defense was LIGHTS OUT after the first half; Gators were completely shut down!!! Coach Richt made some really gutsy calls, going for it on 4th down 3 times and going for the first down to run out the clock. He kept the team together and didn’t panic. Ogletree and S. Willieams made huge plays to cause/recover Fla. fumbles.

Any win against the Gators is a good win; and this one was especially nice.

It wasn’t a ‘pretty’ win, but none-the-less, the Dawgs made the plays they needed to make when they needed to make them, and won!

Sure, there are many areas in which we need to improve; more accurate passing my Murray at times, better focus and accuracy by Walsh, and attention to special teams play are foremost.

Stellar play from especially J Jones and the entire defense, and R Samuel, M Bennett, T King, and C Conley on offense!

Some individual, spectacular play all around on both offense and defense!

Let’s just enjoy this victory and let the Georgia coaches focus on fixing the areas where we are weak. We, and they know where we need improvement, and I’m hopeful we can get better in these weaker areas of play as we move forward.

Hope all that were injured in the game get well quickly. We’ll really need you when we play Auburn.

I am a happy Dawg Fan that we beat the Gators!

J. Jones big time today! Walsh undependable, please open up kicking competition.Samuels way to step up. Were the short punts called, to prevent returns?
Please take a position coach and put him in charge of special teams(other coaches can still assist him). Again, a great day. Even tho don’t see UGA winning SEC, sure would be sweet to win SEC east this year!

Can anyone tell me what is the rationale for not having a special teams coach? I did not realize that special teams was being handled by Richt and the other coaches until the announcers mentioned it during the game. It has been really obvious in several games this season, including this one, that a full-time special teams coach is sorely needed by the Dogs. For example, on kick-offs and punts, our defenders do not seem to be positioned correctyly and do not maintain their lanes. Consequently, they allow gaping holes to open up for returners.

It seems to me that not having a special teams coach makes a statement to the special teams players that Richt places less value on special teams than on the offense and defence. In addition, doesn’t that reduce the amount of time available for the special teams to practice since the coaches can only work with them when they are not coaching the position players?

Could our not having a full-time special teams coach also be part of why Walsh and Butler seem to have lost their confidence and are having such a rough time this season? It seems very odd to me that two preseason All-Americans are struggling so much on every kick. I would imagine that special teams coaches spend a lot of time coaching their kickers, not only on technique, but also on the mental and psychological aspects of their craft. Perhaps not having a steady full-time coach has allowed Walsh and Butler to slip in terms of their skill sets and mental accuity and toughness.

Anyway, it is totally obvious that not having a full-time special teams coach is hurting the team. If it weren’t for poor special teams play, we would have won the South Carolina game and would be 6-0 to South Carolina’s 3-2 going into the Tennessee game and would have the tie-breaker with South Carolina. We definitely would have the inside track to Atlanta.

Florida’s offensive stats vs. Alabama — without Brantley in the 2nd half — compared to vs. Georgia: 1st downs, 9/11; rushing 15/-19; passing 207/245; total 222/226; plays 52/56; yard per play 4.3/4.0; offensive points 10-13.

Georgia’s defense played well but that was because Florida has no offense. No running game and a QB that couldn’t run or throw and they still scored 20 points on UGA. Auburn held Florida to 6 points.

This is a badly coached team across the board. Happy to beat the Gators for sure but Richt must go.

Georgia Tech is handing Clemson their hat tonight. The triple option is very hard to defend especially if the QB came throw the ball and Georgia always gives up a ton of yards against that offense. I hope we are learning something because Georgia Tech is going to give Georgia all they want this year. We had better be ready. Grantham will certainly earn his money that night.

JB, won = won. CMR certainly needs to adjust and as things go I for one can see that he is doing that. Did he exhibit real cojones tonight? Yes, no one can doubt that. Yes, the offense played flat, but they played at a higher level of flat. Just good enough, but much less than they are capable of.

CMR has defense handled, give him credit for improvement. He certainly needs to put a hell of a lot more work into Special Teams and the O line.

I’ll take the win. The UGA team that won tonight would have beat Boise State. We are much improved, but we admittedly have a way to go. Onwards and upwards. Go Dawgs!

It wasn’t pretty, not by a longshot, but a win over Florida is a great win for UGA not matter what the circumstances. I’m usually very critical and I was about to have a freaking embolysm tonight but DAMN IT FEELS GREAT TO BE A DAWG! But to the person who said that they have supposrted Bobo and insinuated that if we don’t support him that we aren’t “REAL Dawg fans,” only a koolaide drinking fool would think that Bobo is the best OC for UGA. A real dawg would want whats best for the team. I am a “REAL Dawg fan” and have been since I could understand what football was but Mike Bobo is an uninventive, predictable, liability as an offensive coordinator and UGA would be far better off with someone else. We’d be 1-6 with Willie at DC if he was still here. Watching the game tonight I could guess what 80-90% of the playcalling was going to be. If I can guess then you better damn well bet your tush that the opposition can. The call on 3rd at the end of the game was his best playcall of his life and I’ll give him props, but he needs to go.

Defense: Had dinner with a neighbor last weekend who is a die hard gator. He was wondering about the the suspensions. I told him the D has a next man up attitude this year are will not be making any excuses. I told him J Jones is the best player we have period. He was not sure who Jones was. I am sure he knows now. Defense played very well. Lovin the size and strength of our DB’s. (minus B. Smith). All of the linebackers have been stepping up for weeks.

Offense: Not sure about Murray sometimes. He should get pulled a series here and there to keep him on his B-game. Actually, he stunk today. Not sure what is up with Crowell. Is he hurt or not???

Play every freshman we have on offense. They seem to be able to catch the ball and make plays.

Richard Samuel impressed me in the Vandy game; he made me a big time fan tonight. What heart and effort! Great effort from both teams. You had to be impressed with Brantley’s effort on a messed up ankle, too. The D played great. The O looked like we had a lot of blown routes. Murray played with tremendous heart, too. Don’t forget that UF has a very talented D. Nobody does well against LSU and UA. Florida is better than their recent record shows. If you look at the Gator season until Brantley got hurt, they did extremely well. The second half of Bama through our kickoff, Brantley was out and they don’t have a backup ready. He was hurt tonight, when he gets better, they should have a very strong finish. Now, Conley was impressive, along with a great catch out of Bennett and King, one each for TDs. Our D played as well as I have seen in a long time. OTOH, our special teams did worse than I can ever remember. What on earth happened. Cut out the special teams mistakes and we would have won 30-7. Great victory. Congrats Dawgs!

I don’t know why everyone is harping on Crowell. He put up 81 yards on 18 carries (4.5 yards per carry) and took a nasty helmet hit to his leg. I’d say that’s pretty darn good. Samuel came out strong today and fought hard. Something we haven’t seen from him all season. A win is a win, even though it wasn’t pretty. Special teams and offense need a lot of work. I’m enjoying the win.

I’m also not enjoying the notion that consecutive wins over weak opponents somehow make Mark Richt a great coach, and entitle him to a contract extension.

The facts are plain enough. Mr. Richt has not produced teams in recent years which beat strong teams. Mr. Richt has stood by Mr. Bobo even though it’s obvious that Bobo is not very good. Mr. Richt has neglected Special Teams to the point where ours formerly dominant kickers are liabilities.

Mr. Richt is not a championship level coach.

Beating any Florida team is great, but let’s get real. This was a lame Florida team. This lame Florida team could have beat us, had a few plays been a bit different.

Congratulations to Mr. Samuels for a fine performance, and the best game of his career.

Leave Crowell alone. He’s a DGD, and may I remind you, 18 years old. Some true freshman can come in and take the load, some can’t. Obviously, Lattimore did for SC, but look at what happened to him this year. Herschel did, but he was (and still is) a freak of nature. Crowell has been battling through several different injuries in a very physical conference, He’ll be a great back and is already contributing a lot. I’d be willing to bet that everyone on here calling him pansy and so forth has never set foot on a football field except to water the grass. Go back to your pathetic whining and leave this winning team alone.

Coach BOBO has got to go. His play calling is too predictable and elementary. The games have become boring to watch. I wonder how much real work he puts into his game plan, if the announcers and spectators know what he is going to do, the other team sure as hell knows whats coming.

Coach Richt, please get back to what made you famous and get rid of bobo. We need you in control of our destiny…let’s get creative and make the games fun to watch!

P.s. Congrats seniors on beating the gators!

Kudos to the Dawgs and Coach Richt! I especially want to throw a big shout out to the receivers (Bennett, King, and Conley) as well as IC and Jarvis and Sam the Man! IC, we know you’re playing hurt but that showed real guts to come in late in the game and get those much needed yards out on the edge when we needed them. I’ve been telling everyone — you’re the real deal! Defense, you’re reminding me of the unit that beat Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl — they kept getting better and better every week, by the end of the season they were the best defense in the nation. Keep up the great work! Special teams — get your stuff together, we need you. GO DAWGS!

Ok all you stupid CMR haters…he will be resigning the end of December. You deserve better than these stupid UGA fans that don’t know what a classy person you are. We don’t need cussing/screaming idiots like Muskrat/fla. We need coaches who truely are men. Best to you and your family. God’s plan is better than any man’s plan.

What is Gary Danielson’s beef UGA football? It is obvious his dislike for Georgia when calling games for CBS sports and quite irritating to listen to as a Georgia fan. It happens evrytime he calls our games. Is it just me?

Murry still does not have a win against a team with a winning record.

Beating Fla is like beating a box of puppies. Little satisfaction with Fla having a rebuilding year.

We beat Fla and proud of it. I have just got sick and stopped reading becouse of all these wounderful Coaches out there that have a fix all solution. I would venture that none of these self professed Coaches that know all are not millionaire and rate much smaller that any of the players that play for the dogs, I think all of these bloggers that are so smart have a hard time at work because their boss is supid. They are probably right because look who they hired.

Great win this past weekend Dawgs. You guys finished the drill. My concerns are still our special teams play and offense! I look at other teams in the country and try to compare them to us. All I can see is execution, i.e. Okl State, look at there offense EXPLOSIVE, just a few years ago we beat them! I am Happy for the WIN, and for the players. We must a better game plan. We’re structered for the GROUND and POUND, then the play action! Let the run game set up the passing game… Why do we all go to this damn spread! Look at our young receivers and running back (GREAT), OH and our TE’s! Ground in pound and set up the pass simple! Take a page out of Alabama book. If that doesn’t work then go to the pass! And please get a special teams coach, again look at the elite teams around; they execute in all phases of the game, again LSU, ALA (SEC)! We have the biggest offencsive line around. Smash the ball. And stop putting walk ons out on special teams; our best needs to be out there whenever possible! I’m not a coach but a GREAT DAWG FAN and want to see the program have the respect that they should have. And want teams to fringe when they see our date approaching on the schedule! GO DAWGS!

wreckmaniac:

Florida–even in a rebuilding year with a lame QB–would’ve crushed Clemson in the AM, and then your Bugs in the PM.

No contest. It’s and ACC v SEC thang. You wouldn’t understand.

Just sayin’
