Kwame Geathers’ father upset over his son’s half-game suspension

Robert Geathers Sr., the father of Georgia sophomore noseguard Kwame Geathers, is upset that his son was assessed a two-quarter suspension in the Florida game after being the victim of what he thought was a dangerous, defenseless hit in the Vanderbilt game this past weekend.

“I’ve played football and been around football all my life,” said Robert Geathers Sr., who played in the NFL for 13 seasons has has two other sons playing professionally, “and if you watch it you see this kid speed up while everybody else is slowing down and he’s locked in on my son’s leg. If you look closely you can see the guy give a thumbs up to the sideline and the coach telling him ‘good job.’ I was, like, ‘Wow!’ I could be sitting here today telling you how my son’s surgery went.”

Mr. Geathers is referring to Vanderbilt sophomore center Logan Stewart, who was flagged for clipping on the play. Kwame Geathers was called for a personal foul after he turned around and punched Stewart in the side while both players remained on the ground. You can  GO HERE TO WATCH THE VIDEO.

Both players were assessed half-game suspensions by the SEC on Wednesday afternoon. Georgia strong safety Shawn Williams was also levied a half-game suspension for an illegal hit he made in the game.

Mr. Geathers was incredulous that his son is being disciplined at all.

“They fine you for hits like that in the NFL and they’re fining Kwame two quarters out of a game?,” he said. “Kwame didn’t do anything wrong. He’s just reacting. I’m a parent who’s really upset. I could’ve gotten a call telling me that my son’s career is over.”

Mr. Geathers said Vanderbilt “needs to call Georgia and apologize for that kid. I think a good coach would do that. I’m not sure if we’ll get anything out of this but somebody needs to make an example of it and it doesn’t need to be Kwame.”

Vanderbilt coach James Franklin and Georgia coach Mark Richt, participating in the weekly SEC teleconference call on Wednesday, declined to comment on any of the events that took place during or after Georgia’s 33-28 win.

This suspension will mean more to UGA than Vandy by a long shot.

I agree completely with Mr. Geathers. UGA always seems to get penalized for infractions and other college teams/players get nothing. If you want to talk about lack of class, start with the Vandy coach who initiated all of this and Logan Stewart.

What a cheap shot. I don’t blame Kwame one bit. Franklin is a POS. He should have walked away if a 20 year old college kid was talking smack. Franklin was the adult but he sure didn’t act like one.

I can’t ever remember the SEC suspending someone for a personal foul that was flagged on the field. Not saying that it has never happened; just do’t remember it. This has gone way to far, but I can tell you this, he be a nightmare for FL come the second half of that game.

Sad that he was hit after the play was over and this is what happens. I wonder if the refs get any kind of punishment for their actions during this game.

So our starting Def Lineman who was blindsided at the knee by
Vandy’s player, leading with his helmet, must sit the first half of the Fla game while Vandy’s offender sits the first half of the ARMY game!?!?!? Now that friends is SEC justice. This is the same SEC Commish who didn’t dare suspend Nick Fairley, the same SEC Commish who overturned the SEC rule regarding seeking financial benefits so Cam could play, the same SEC Commish who saw no need to suspend Brandon Spikes for eye gouging Ealey, yet he is able to step up and suspend Kwame Geathers. Way to go Mike Slive, you are a true and brilliant Commissioner.

Equal punishment says Kwame sits the first half of the New Mexico St game, that would be the equal to sitting the first half of the Army game, wouldn’t it?

I didn’t see the cheap shot watching the game. After watching the video, Kwame should not get suspended for receiving such a cheap shot to the knee. That will hurt us a lot more than it will Vandy. JJ will have to step it up in the first half if so.

Kind of like Ben Jones going after the Miss State players knees last year. Coach Richt marched his hind end to the sideline and told him not to do that anymore. Then he put him back in. Seems like UGA has been accused of chop blocks before.

Mr. Geathers is correct to be mad. This is embarrasing for the SEC to penalize Kwame. I don’t condon his punch at all but the tape has to be able to be viewed by the SEC and it is clear. Vandy played a dirty game and tried to act as if they did nothing wrong.

Chip – I don’t know if it is you or a supposed “editor”, but the articles and headlines regarding the UGA/Vandy issues have been downright sensationalist and irresponsible.”… upset over his forthcoming suspension”…??? You could say possible, pending… forthcoming sounds as if it has already been decided.

And to characterize Kwame’s reaction as a punch is also a bit harsh. He was clearly the victim of a dirty hit after the whistle had blown and the play stopped. I think any player who is hit from behind unexpectedly after the whistle is going to react with a physical response. His “punch” is more of a rapid push, and it was not followed by any other aggressive movement.

It is obvious when the AJC tries to over-hype issues involving UGA, and I’m sick of it.

It seems this Vandal coach isn’t as innocent as he makes himself out to be. And for someone to maliciously try to injure another player and allowed to continue to play is on the refs. Kwame’s Dad should file an injunction & sue the SEC. Kwame had a gut reaction to a player trying to injure him! The coach should who cheered his player for that should be suspended for the rest of the season if not banned all together! The NCAA needs to take cut blocking out of the game & make it a 15 yard personal foul. Then if a player gets flagged for that enough times he gets suspended if it continues after that he gets a lifetime ban. There’s no place in the game for trying to intentionally hurt someone! Therefore a rule should not be kept that could cause harm to players!

Jame Franklin is a deceitful, pretentious, self-righteous hyprocrite. Could Grantham have responded in a better way – Yes – He has admitted his fault. Not Franklin – he wants everyone to think nothing was his fault, but Franklin instigated the whole scene. The Vandy coach is a grown adult who has no business coming at 20 year old players after the game. And then yell back at our coach – there was no turning the other cheek. As Richt said walk out and shake hands – that means you too James. Vandy likes to protray themsellves as this clean cut group that plays by the rules. That is the dirtiest, cheating team UGA has played all year. Call a spade a spade !!!

Also, I think all of the talk about the conversation between CMR and Franklin after the skirmish had been pretty one-sided and ignorant. If you watched Franklin’s post-game presser, it is obvious that he is very smug and is trying to change Vandy’s pushover status overnight. While I commend the notion, I don’t condone the tactics.

Franklin’s explanation to CMR reminded me of a kid who’s about to get in trouble running to Daddy to explain that it was his brother’s fault… and Richt just wanted him appeased and out of his face.

MoDawg

The only reason the SEC even looked at it with such scrutiny is because of what happened at the end of the game. It was pretty classless, but a good marketing ploy by Franklin to come after a UGA player and then say he was looking for Richt, which he clearly was not. Grantham happened to be closer and Franklin started in on him to prove that Vandy is not going to stand by while the big bullies try to walk over them any more and it blew up in his face (so did Grantham, by the way). Once he finally found Richt, he was like “Mr. Richt, your coach yelled at me, sniff, sniff…” and Richt, being the peacekeeper dobbed his tears and told him it was going to be okay.
The after-game incident caused so much conversation and uproar that the SEC went above and beyond to make a statement. Both players were flagged and I, too have to wonder about the double-standard Slive seems to uphold.
Kwame, get all revved up on the sideline in the first half so we can turn you loose on the Gator offensive line in the second half. It might just be a career game for you.

Cut blocking, chop blocking and “clipping” are all different. A chop block is when one offensive player is holding up a defender and another offensive player hits the same defender below the waist. Cut blocking is where a single offensive player blocks a single defender below the waste. Clipping is a block from behind (generally below the knee). Cut blocking is legal. Chop blocking and clipping are not. What you see in the video is a clipping. Defensive lineman hate all three!

Maybe 2 wrongs don’t make a right but in the heat of a game, you can’t blame a player for retaliating for an intentioal dangerous hit. You have to let the other team know you are not going to let their dirty play go unpunished. Any coach who encourages his players to take cheap shots should be disciplined as well. We are fortunate to have both Jenkins and Gaithers to back each other up and punish the oposing line. By the same token, I dont want to see our guys taking cheap shots either. In the meantime, if Geathers has to sit out the first half of the FL game, make someone pay a price in the seocnd half. And remember, next year you get Stewart in Athens, Between the Hedges. Whip his a$$!

I personally dont feel that a penalty should be handed down from the commissioners office for a penalty. The refs handle this during the game by throwing a flag and penalizing the team and if something in the way of a fight breaks out the ref can eject a player.

I really dont believe that a comish or SEC office wants or should get into evaluating games and imposing additional penalties after a game.

Off field stuff or issues after a game, maybe, but leave calling the game to the refs.

Good for Mr. Geathers !!!!!

I don’t see anyone standing up for Kwame (unless it was Coach TG)….maybe that was part of what Coach TG was fussing at Coach Franklin about.

But look at the darn video—-that hit in Kwame was very wrong….The vandy player attacked the kneed.

The vandy player needs to be suspended for the whole game and Kwame needs and apology.

I am just as upset as Mr. Geathers

GTBob, “Sorry Mr. Geathers but you can be penalized for reactions as well. Punching a guy is going to get you suspended. It doesn’t matter what provoked it. If your son would have just walked away then UGA would not have gotten a penalty and your son would play the whole game against UF.”

This is so much easier to say when it isn’t you and it isn’t your son. In fact, you have no way of knowing how you would react in that situation until it is you in that situation. Let someone clearly try to take your knee out and see how you feel. Besides, you say he could have just walked away but quite honestly, that ability was almost taken away from him .. literally. Stewart should be suspended for the year. His signal to the bench and the video of him lining up the hit make it obvious his intentions were to injure.

I don’t know how much more motivation the Bulldog players need to get up for Florida other than the game itself. But if this whole Vandy episode and the unfair portrayal of the incident it’s getting from the press and media makes them as angry as it does me Florida is going to meet with some mad dogs. At this rate if I’m the Gators I hope Kwame doesn’t get suspended. I’m really beginning to get the sense that the Bulldogs are going to whip the Gators good.

The SEC office needs to provide precedents here of other plays just like this and the resultant suspension period. Kwame Geathers threw a punch. I am totally surprised that he was not thrown out at that very moment. The officials had already thrown the red flag on sophomore Center Logan Stewart. I believe if Kwame Geathers had not thrown the punch hitting Logan Stewart, that neither player would face any suspension period. This is not right, all around. And, moreover, I do not believe if # 36 Shawn Williams had not been taunting the Vandie sidelines after the game, when he had 2 personal fouls in the game, that (1) Shawn Williams would not be sitting out 2 quarters or any quarters either like Kwame Geathers would not have and I believe (2) that Todd Grantham and James Franklin would not have faced any suspensions, either. This story is half-baked, therefore and rush to press when you should have been asking other people in the conference call for the others to provide these details to you. If the 2 players are all that is suspended and especially if James Franklin and Todd Grantham are not suspended when they are supposed to be these kids’ leaders, whom the players are supposed to look up to, then The SEC Office has this ALL WRONG. I know Robert Geathers, Sr. is the father; but, as far as I am concerned, what Robert Geathers, Sr. says, is what it actually is and the discussion ends with his statement. Now, get us the details, not half the story. I think you make it sound like Chip Towers printing this this early, as if the 2 players are suspended for 2 quarters each. Well, again, they NEITHER would be facing that without James Franklin and especially Todd Grantham getting into it over Shawn Williams.

James Franklin and Todd Grantham are the 2 who should be suspended. Without their skirmish, there is not any suspension coming to anyone else. They are to blame. Well, maybe Kwame was always going to be suspended – cannot punch a player. That part had to happen.

Have to say that I agree that Kwame was wrong by throwing the punch according to the rules of football. Do i blame him for reacting to the cheep shot after the play was over…. NO. Just being a man. But the penalties for the clip and for the punch after should be thrown and accessed on the field not in the office the next week. If the official thought the penalty was 15 yards… fine… If he thought it should be an ejection…. fine…. eject either or both. But this evaluating penalties the following week and accessing a penalty is for the birds.

1/2 game is OK I guess – shouldn’t retaliate – but usually retailiation is punished with a penalty – but I’m ok with it.

The young Vandy player should pay a heftier price – at least one game I think would suffice –

If the SEC is investigating, they should investigate the “thumbs up”. If a kid it taught/encouraged/coherced into diving at the back of a player’s knee after a play winds down, the coach should be banned from the SEC.

That’s the tragedy – along with the fact that Bradley/Shultz want to find a way to suspend Grantham for scowling on the sideline

But that was a dangerous block that Logan DECIDED to make on Geathers. I feel that the Vandy coaches do owe an appology. That could have very easily had been the end of his career. CUM suspended Spikes for a quarter because of the fallout. I have supported CMR through the good times and bad times, but if he doesn’t come out with a strong statement against what has happened this week he has lost me forever. The AJC, 680 the fan, and Nashville media have been allowed to frame the argument from last week’s game in a way that makes UGA look guilty and so the SEC feels justified in taking action. CMR either needs to stand behind his players and coaches or get out of the way. Take off the red lenses for a second fellas. If I had been in Kwame’s position, I’d have gone straight for that kids head with knees and elbows till the chinstrap came off. That is irrelevant, however, b/c this sport is trying to maintain a new “image” so that it no longer appears to be an uncivilized, barbaric sport. They have to send clear messages in these cases. A clear message is: you don’t use your fists to end a confrontation on or off the field. A clear message is: if you take a shot at someone who is unprotected, you will miss playing time. It has nothing to do with a “Who hit Who first”. As disciplined players and young men, sometimes you need to turn the other cheek and take the high road. That’s the league’s stance. As a man, if you take a shot at me, I’m gonna let you know that you picked a fight with the wrong hound. I don’t blame Kwame for sending his own private “Don’t F w/me” message. Grantham should know better, he’s a 45 year old man who saw plenty of TV exposure in the NFL and knows how it affects coaches’ careers. There’s a trade-off that you have to be willing to accept responsibility for. Gain respect/lose playing time. Lose respect/Stay on the field. Totally a judgement call, and, from a team perspective with what’s riding on this season, probably not the right one.

You should read T.Brown’s comments yesterday about Richt(on Chips last story yesterday around pg9 or 10), b/c they are spot on. I think Richt is a good headcoach, and a great analyst when it comes to QBs and scheme approach (for HIS system). However, he has never accepted the responsibility in any game or any season for the short-comings of the team. It’s always, “they could have executed better” or “if they had caught that pass” or “If it weren’t for that momentum swing after…” over and over and over. He’s blamed the coaches he’s hired, the players he recruited and every other factor except his ability to prepare the team and his play-calling decisions in close games. That is not integrity, so be careful about calling out CPJ. We have a much larger plank in our eye.

First of all hits like that take place every week in every game. Sometimes out in the open, sometimes in positions where it may not be seen as well. That does not make it right, however punching or swinging at a player is not right as well. I remember a few years ago when an Auburn offensive lineman purposly blocked LSU’s Glen Dorsey at is knees. Dorsey did not miss a game thankfully however he was hampered for the next 3 or 4 games until he was able to get back to full speed. That kids did not serve a suspension by the conference or Auburn. But to say that UGA gets a bad rap is over the top also to say that Franklin is “Whatever he was called” is dumb as well. He is no more classless that Richt. Remember the Florida game when the entire team ran to the endzone to celebrate a TD. I know that it is a rivalry but the principles of sportsmanship should be the same. Then with the UGA players running over to talk smack after the game, is normal in sports to a degree but again you have to wonder if Richt is even pushing the sportsmanship thing at all. I think both coaches are class guys, but Franklin is obviously trying to change the mindset of his players and the program overall.

As a LSU fan, I really have nothing in the way of bias for either team. But after seeing the video a few times, I am disturbed that the SEC would give both players the same penalty when one play instigated the action that could have been a career ending hit.

Matthews dawg, emotion is sitting there watching us run the ball 2 & 57 in the UTwith out cussing. Really 2 & 57? I have never in my close to 4 decades of watching football ever seen a 2 & 57. Sure Richt won a ton at UGA early on. I have been a supporter of Richt this season as well as the past three. The man knows how to win. However the crap I have witness during the games mentioned above has just been unbearable. Unbearable. We are batting 50% in the redzone. You want to win an NC at UGA. Somebody is not doing there job with the talent they have on hand.

What is your excuse for the coaching staff? Why aren’t we putting the games away. No talent on the field? The other team is better? Better athletes on the other side? Better coaching? Better adjustments during the game? They want it more?

I am not trying to argue with you but do you think we should be scrapping it out with Vandy? Ole Miss? MSU? a down UT? How about our special teams play? Impressive?

Spot on. The entire staff could use a little more self-control. The only person on the coaching staff who seems to has that down is Richt, but he frequently looks like he is catatonic. It trickles down when you have a coaching staff that can conduct itself with poise and discipline. Look at Saban. He knows exactly when, where, and what time to lose control. Coach Franklin is a loose cannon, and his actions caused the incident after the game. It’s interesting that the initial story was that Franklin was yelling at UGA’s Williams and Grantham intervened. Now Franklin’s story is that he was trying to find Richt to complain about
UGA’s behavior, and could not find him so instead he approached Grantham. This guy has a chip on his shoulder and is trying to motivate his players and impress recruits. You can bet this is the first of many controversies that will involve coach Franklin.

@ AFDawg & @ Bucket if you read my post correctly you would see that I clearly stated that they are two very different things, however I was referencing that statement made by someone calling Franklin out. True you can’t compare the foolish act of celebrating in the endzone to what could have been a career ending injury. I did not mean to say that, however what I am saying is that things like this happens several times in every game at every level, however when you see stuff like this happen involving the players of one coach it makes you wonder if he is telling his kids about being hardnosed yet showing good sportsmanship. I still think tht throwing a punch was wrong and he should be punished, however the kid or kids from Vany should have received a more harsh penalty that the UGA kid.

Both Mr. Geathers and his son have a right to be upset. I think they should seek legal counsel and make an example out of the NCAA/SEC. This kinda play goes on far to much. The “dirty play” is everywhere, on every team, However the punishment very seldom fits the crime, so to speak. The NFL has tried to address some of their issue’s, but only after players careers were shortend or all togetther ended. Personal fouls should be up for reveiw in some situation’s. At the time it occurs. The coach’s should be allowed two instant replay’s. one a half, to find out what instigated the intial reaction. At least then if dealt with during the game, we could all move on. It’s really not fair if it’s not handled during the game. Because of the fact that it doesn’t affect the game in which it took place.

If I was Richt I would be fuming and would expect at the least the Vandy coach to step forward and apologize, as well as the player. Barry Wilson

October 19th, 2011
3:27 pm

After looking at the video numerous times – real time and slow motion – I agree 100% with Geathers father. That was a classic cowardly, dirty, cheap shot by Vandy’s, Logan Stewart, and could have ended Kwame Geathers’ career. The “play” at that point was over and well away from both players. Vandy’s Stewart had no reason to even bump Geathers, much less deliberately attack his knee from behind. There is no excuse to justify what happened and Geathers only reacted instincively as most any competitive player would, when their career is deliberately threatened like that. I can see a penalty being called in the game, for the so called “retaliation” by Geathers, perhaps even a reprimand, but the suspension is B.S.!
The Commissioner and the SEC folks generally do a good job but in this case I feel they are covering their butts by penalizing everyone.

With behavior modeling like this from this father, do you have any wonder why the player felt “enabled” to throw a punch without fear of punishment? “I may have hit him, but he hit me first – anyway, if you try to punish me I will tell my daddy and you will be sorry”!! I hear it almost every day in the classroom.

(1) The SEC is NOT the NFL .. .so no matter what the rules are there.. they may or may not apply in college football, in other words, NFL rules have no relevance to the league your son plays in.

(2) Your son did wrong. Period. Ask him to be a stand up guy and take responsibility for HIS actions. 2 quarters of football does not seem like much to me. Kwame’s reaction was wrong !! To say he “didnt do anything wrong” is wrong in itself.

I am sick of the discrepancy in punishmentment meted out by the SEC office and Mike Slive who I have lost all respect for and didn’t have much left anyway after last year. Money drives the SEC office.

I am sick of the way the AJC has long handled stories concerning UGA. Giving that Vanderbilt POS the headlines and how he is benefitting in recruiting…instead of calling out the hypocritical $%^ he really is.

I am also sick of the people at UGA not sticking up for their athletes. Just take it, roll over, and take it again. CMR agreed with Franklin before ever even hearing the other side of the story. And no he hadn’t had time to know the full story. I want my coaches to have my players back and I want my head coach to have the assistant’s backs. Even if they are wrong he needs to hear their side first, discipline them or talk with them, and then respond publicly.

The punch was a reflex at a potentially career ending cheapshot. I could not agree more with the father and Bulldawg Nation (not the woosies on here disguised as UGA or the Tech or Alabama or Florida fans) should all be offended.

Slive is a chicken sh*t coward. What about a penalty for the coaches involved Mike? The only reason Williams is suspended is to give Franklin air cover for starting the whole mess. You can bet your butts they wanted to suspend CTG but couldn’t do it without suspending Franklin too. Thus they they pin everything on the players. Slive is a millionaire coward placing the blame on the college students and protecting millionaire head coaches who just shrug their shoulders and move on.

You people who talk about Leadership & Character on here….it would have been an excellent display of character had our head coach defended is players, like the way Mr.Geathers defended his son, and told Franklin to go “F” himself (figuratively speaking of course) , Then let McGarity go say all the PC crap that the powers that be expect.

At the very least, it was cheap shot, but it looked like he was trying his best to hurt Geathers. one of the worst plays I’ve ever seen. Any rational and neutrial person can see from the video that the hit on Geather’s legs was premeditated and out of context with the fact that the play was essentially over. The Vandy coach should apologize and the SEC should not put Geathers’ reaction in the same class as this deliberate and illegal shot at his leg/knee.

Glad to see Mr. Geathers speak out. If that’s the way James Franklin intends to play in order to move up in the SEC, he’s going to have a short career. UGA may very well have a new coach in 2012, and hopefully that new coach is similar to Spurrier and Saban. Run the score up as high as possible. Vandy is fortunate Georgia was sleep-walking in that game Saturday. When they needed to, Georgia scored at will and stopped them. But due to lack of focus and youth, they let Vandy back in (you can’t argue that, Vandy scored 3 points against South Carolina and Alabama. That’s pretty bad). Vandy is improving, no doubt about that. But dirty play won’t work in the SEC regardless of who is instigating it.

In the last 3 or 4 seasons UGA players have been involved in situations where they could have substained live changing injuries from reckless, aggressive and prehaps coached behavior from opponents.
The first I remember involved the eye gouging by Brandon Spikes. Last season Nick Fairly tried to injury Aaron Murray the entire game and succeeded with a helmet spear to the back that left Murray rolling in pain on the turf. The lastest was the blind side clip by Logan Stewart in an attempt to “blow out” Gaithers’ knee after play was over in the Vandy game. Some how a personal foul penalty of 15 yards for this “premeditated” behavior seem inadequate. Even the retaliatory responses (for which they were penalized)by Ben Jones against Nick Fairly and the “punch” by Gaithers against Logan Stewart does not do justice. I reaize the game of football is violate and officiating is sometimes poor, but must we wait until a young man is paralyzed to do something. We have “under further review” to determine the spot of the football or whether the receiver actually caught the ball or was he out of bounds. Prehaps there should be a “review” to determine if a dirty player or coach should be removed from the game. Coach Richt what are you doing to protect and defend UGA players?

Gatormeat,

You comments are the most ignorant I have read today. I guess you have nothing better to do than troll here, posting the inflammatory comments you have to get a rise out of folks to get your rocks off. Your comments make you as suspect as the players you are referring to.

Any person with a bit of common sense and intelligence would realize that a collegiate football team is full of all sorts of different players with different personalities, attitudes, morals, cultural, ethical backgrounds. Some of these players are going to poor decision on and off the football field, and some of these individuals are not the greatest representatives of the human race. No team is immune to this. Not Georgia, not Vandy, and neither is Florida.

In addition, you must have never played sports or have any idea how to be a good sport or what sportsmanship. Intentionally trying to hurt another player during a game is to me one of the most egregious offenses that can be made withing the confines of the game itself. Sean Williams for UGA I thought made such a hit,and I disapprove as well as agree that he should be suspended. Sometimes these hits are not intentional as it is done in the heat of the moment or a player gets injured on a legitimate, good, hard, clean hit; however, I think William’s hit on the Vandy player was not clean just like the hit the Vandy center made on Geathers. Any one who condones this type of action is a low life.

It’s fans like you Gatormeat that give the entire gator fanbase a bad name. How dare you say such things about people from GA and suggest that the player should have taken Geathers out for good! This is why, as a GA transplant (and longtime fan & alum) to FL, I can’t stand most gator fans, even when I tried to defend you guys when I first moved here. Most of you have no class (all the way to the upper eschelon; i.e. doctors, lawyers, other professionals, etc.), and I have always conducted myself with class. FYI, I grew up with GA kicking florida’s butt, so I know what it is like to be on the other side. You guys were irrelefvant until the 90’s and now think you are the class of the SEC east – what a joke! If any of you knew how to win or lose with class, it would be a different story; however, it is a fact that all of you have no clue how to conduct yourselves with any type of dignity. Oh well, I guess we will just see what happens next week. I, for one, hope this latest news for GA turns out to be a huge positive and we kick your collective arses!! I am tired of being disrespected by a bunch of low class losers in life – you may win most of them (in recent years) on the football field, but you are losers in life if you don’t know how to treat others with respect! We’ll just have to see what happens next week, won’t we a***holes!! Go DAWGS!! For the record, Geathers had a reason to respond like he did – what if somebody tried to take you, or your kid, out of a game for good. And Franklin has the audacity to complain about anything. Looks like Vandy has a bunch of classless coaches who condone that type of play. Hope Franklin gets what he deserves in the long run – just remember KARMA is a Biotch!! Look at your own coach and players in recent years, especially Muschamp this year, then tell me you are justified in saying anything about any other coaches, fans, players. Why do you think everybody else, other than gator fans, can’t stand you guys? And this opinion was prevelant long before you guys were even relevant! Sorry for Geathers and his family that they are having to deal with this!!

May be time for Richt to go

October 19th, 2011
9:00 pm

I am a life-long Georgia fan and have supported Richt many times when others have criticized him. But I think I have had about enough of him and think it may be time for him to go. For him to walk up to Franklin and be so accepting of the Vanderbilt version of what happened is hard for me to believe. I am not condoning what Coach Grantham did and am not saying that Richt should have yelled back at Franklin, but for him to be so apologetic without getting his own players’ and coach’s versions of the story tells me tht he is more worried about how he is perceived by the media and other coaches than he is about UGA. I really don’t see Les Miles or Saban having that same conversation. Geathers should not have punched the Vandy player, but you have to understand a player’s reaction to a play that is clearly intended to do major harm. Why wasn’t this play called in the first place? And if it is true that the Vandy player was given the thumbs up by the Vandy coaching staff after the dirty play on Geathers, then that film needs to be sent to the SEC and let’s see if they will reprimand Vandy. It seems that Richt and UGA are always just so apologetic to the NCAA and the SEC and then they get huge punishments while other programs take a hard stand and get a free pass. Was Farley ever called for dirty plays? It is just so obvious that the NCAA and SEC make examples out of UGA becasue they know Richt will be just so nice and Christian about it. I am not a Tech fan but I have to respect them for announcing they would challenge the NCAA punishment decision. Richt, if you cannot stand up for UGA, then you need to go.

That said, the rules should apply equally to all, however, we have come full circle once again with a blatant lack of common sense…………….Mike Slive the so-called head man of the SEC is no man whatsoever…………Mike Slive is more concerned with image, expansion, money, and raw-power than the health and well being of a fine young man who understandably took a reaction shot at a cheap shot player from Vanderbilt……………And hell no, this shot was nothing like the “clip” Ben Jones was guilty of last year. I am an old man, I believe in good sportsmanship, but I do believe more in common sense. I wonder if the Vanderbilt center has written a letter of apology to Kwamme as Ben Jones did after his less violent block. All I can say is God help that Vanderbilt center [soph] when Kwamme lines up against him next year in Athens…………Do you really think BULLDOG NATION, Kwamme Geathers, and his teamates are going to forget?……………Lastly, do you think that Junkyard D might be playing with a tad bit of emotion just to show the Nation they damn well back-up their own…………as well as coach Todd Grantham?………….If by chance Mr. Robert Geathers is reading this, thanks for your contribution to this great game……….and thanks for raising such fine young men…………..Sincerily, RED

Also how physically damaging is it to be punched with full pads on while on the ground? That’s not even close to what actually goes on in those pile ups. Now a flagrant clip that received high fives and thumbs up gets the same penalty? You don’t even have to be a GA fan to see that. Typical same old bs from the NCAA. HECK some players from Miami only got one game suspensions for that bs they ss

No one down here is surprised the lowly dogs are in trouble, they have been a disgraceful program for decades run by disgraceful people. For example, what really happened between V Dooley and that lady cop in New Orleans back in the day?

Use the old score rules and remember the guilty vandy players next year. Thank you Coach Grantham by standing up for your players.

I’m not one for conspiracies, but ever since Richt condoned the end zone celebration against UF several years ago, it appears that the refs have unfairly gone after UGA! Immediately the year after, the dogs were the most penalized teams in the country!!! Phantom calls like AJ Green’s endzone “celebration” against LSU which cost us the game, etc.

These infractions that UGA did against Vandy is nothing compared to what Fairley did ALL year last year. Or, Brandon Spikes eye gouging & the SEC did NOTHING!!!!

Vandy has lost what class they once had; they sholud be demoted to the ACC, where they can still play cheap and probably win a conference championship every few years. Just sayin…

coach ricth has a vagina. The only person that should be suspended is
that coach you call an offensive coordinator mike blow blow. Have you heard
of the position called tight end ? I know you have because it is that position
that when you use it IT WORKS! blow blow could not coach high school.

TIME FOR ACTION!! NOT B/C OF THE IMPORTANCE OF THE GA-FL GAME, AND NON-CONF ARMY-VANDY GAME.

SEC AND NCAA AND ALL OTHER SIMILAR COLLECTIONS OF POLITICAL ENTITIES WHO HAVE TOO MUCH PIOWER AND ARE TO UNEQUEAL IN JUSTICE NEED TO BE SUBTRACTED FROM EARTH.

MY POINT: The non penalty for Spike the eye gouger, Fairly the hood, some guy who swung at an Ala player but missed last Saturday ( It does not count if you have a bad aim?)SEC waqnt to protect the fron runner for good image-period. I also point out the celebration epenalty on AJ against LSU, while fron runner UF had a different set of rules. I

Now apparently the SEC KING is going to force us fans to accept Missouri, or is ESPN forcing it? That means ESPN is now Commisssioner of the SEC.

Miami players fly to Vegas for extras and get less penalty than AJ for selling his own property. Ohio St gets a bowl game reprieve for what has turned out to be quite a bit of illegal stuff ( although at the start it was them selling their own property, too.) But OSU has different rules. The penalty is assessed when convenient.

I am sure fans of other schools have similar stories. JUSTICE SHOULD NOT MEAN WHAT INFLATES THE POCKET BOOK OR EGO OF THE POLITICLALLY POWERFUL.

If the SEC though we were in the National Title hunt, there would be no suspensions for risk of losing the BCS payouts. They make examples of what they believe ultimately to be of no consequence, while looking the other way (on the excuse of “someone else is handling it” e.g. Camgate) for infractions that might cost BCS status.

I back GRANTHAM and GEATHERS 100% and all of sudden when a Georgia player gets a personal foul (Shawn Williams) it is a suspension….

Man, if we start suspending every kid who gets a 15 yard personal foul penalty…THERE WILL BE NOBODY TO PLAY THE GAMES!!!

Franklin is the Willie Wonka of a candy ass football team. Geathers could have had his career ended by that flagrant, cheap shot. The SEC is all wrong here. See you in Athens next year, Franklin. You are going to get an ass whippin of biblical proportion.

CMR NEEDS to stand up for HIS players and what is right, instead OF calling HIS own PLAYERS crappy names, and then taking the PC duck move with the media, SEC and the Vandy coach. Screw that! We need a coach who roll up his sleeves and get down in the trenches with his players, instead of trying to look like Mr. Pretty Boy PC man. I like CMR, but I wish he would take a different approach.

The hit was dirty. Geathers did react.. It is going to hurt the dawgs. Vandy comes out in the good. SEC should let the coaches decide which game to suspend the players. Ga has a much more important game to play.. Oh well!!! Let’s all move on.Thank god Geathers did not have a blown out knee.

This Stewart punk should be indefinitely suspended and forced to pickup trash along some desolate Alabama highway along with that low-life horse’s-ass Ben Jones. Both of them suck! I have hated Jones since he got here. He is an A-hole, redneck with no class, a bad attitude and an extreme lack of discipline. Both of these punks resort to cheap shots when they are overmatched. At least Jones was forced to appologize. I will give him that. However, this sorry POS Stewart will never have to.
Vandy and lil Jimmy Franklin are now the media darlings for being whiny. UGA should from now on drop the hammer every time we play when lil Jimmy is the coach. I have always respected Vandy. Historically, they have always played with class even though outmatched in every facet of the game. They never give up and have always been gracious even in defeat. NOT ANYMORE! Lil Jimmy has now changed that. He will now get the same respect that the West Coast surfer gil Lane Kiffin gets. Jimmy you suck, you have never been anything and you never will be. You think you are going to be the next Steve Spurrier but guess what, not in this lifetime. At least Steve won a heisman, played in the pros, coached in the pros and started “winning” at Duke before he started shooting his mouth off. You haven’t done jack, with the exception of trying to attack a kid that is playing a game! Toe to toe with Grantham you would get killed physically, and mentally. Enjoy these two seasons in Nashville while you can, the Vandy alums won’t put up with your lack of class.

The Real Story

October 20th, 2011
2:52 pm

See, what wad happen was…Stewart was getting dominated by Geathers. At some point, the Vandy coaches hyped up the line to take care of Geathers…Stewart was the bag man, decided to take the cheap shot at Geathers. Geathers at this point, like anyone on this blog, would have taken offense to that…and would have retaliated. I commend Geathers for not taking it further. He kept it simple with a SINGLE punch, to let Stewart know he didnt appreciate it. Its not like he hunted Stewart down to Mike Tyson his arse!! Stewart gets up…throws a thumbs up to the staff which they throw back!! Intent was proven. Of course, this gets worse as the game progresses. The officials fail to have institutional control of the field. The cheap shots continue, hence, the Williams incident. True he got a lil too hot headed, but as a fellow player…i’m gonna get fired up for my teamate!! Fine with that..two unsportsmanlike conducts calls. Teams continue the trash talking…of course, instigated by the Stewart issue! No idea if Richt knows whats even going on at this point. So the game ends, Franklin goes after Williams, which was not in his right or responsibility. theres a chain of command for handling such issues. So game ends, of course Grantham has nothing to say to the head coach..and takes its to the clubhouse. He did not go head hunting for Franklin…Franklin went after Williams…which Grantham saw…and considering the earlier incidents of the game. Grantham lashed out!! As any coach would do for his players!! Vandy was in the wrong, and continue to be. Franklin has opened a can of good ole fashioned GA kick ass…good luck playing the Dawgs down the road in your career, bud!! Thats how it panned out, and all your troll haters…keep drinking the hateraid!! Ya’ll are the only delusional people on a UGA website!! that speaks for itself!!

Maybe he should have been upset by the hit, but the rule is the rule. If you hit someone, you are to be ejected. Period. That didn’t happen, so the SEC is enforcing it. Maybe you should go ask Mr. Matthews about HIS son’s hit. He could be telling you whether his son would ever get over his paralysis after that cheap shot. As for it hurting Ga more than VU, it should. They had TWO players breaking rules. Vanderbilt had one.

Am I the only one who saw the Vandy player slap a Georgia player in the shoving match after a kickoff. No suspension for him and we got penalized. Eye gouging ok if you play for Florida. Helmet to the knee ok if you play for Auburn. The SEC Commissioners Office is a joke. Mike Slive is a joke.

I’m not saying that geathers was right for punching the kid from vanderbilt but that was clearly a dirty play by the vanderbilt lineman and he should’ve been suspended from one game. that was clearly a dirty play by that kid and the SEC did nohting to him that’s BLEEPED UP.

Having lost a football career to a knee injury and then treating knees for many years professionally, any player who shoots at a knee blindside And after the play intends to injure the recipient.Cheap shot doesn`t do that justice. That the act was apparently sanctioned by a coach ranks it in the cesspool of sportsmanship. The interview in which Vandy`s coach defends his player -calling out post game rant initiating a retaliatory reaction from LG clearly illustrates a spoiled brat attitude. The gentleman is nothing but a punk, and Logan should have been suspended for multiple with a warning that future such actions would get him booted. Naysayers and Vandy fans may rant at that, but ending a player`s season at the very least, and possibly a career with someone 350 lbs taking a lateral shot like that, is inexcusable. Mr Geathers is not only right in his indignation, but shows remakable self control. If it were my son and he had been injured, I`d travel to nashville and give the coach a swift kick in the nuts.
