UPDATED: Georgia NG Kwame Geathers, SS Shawn Williams, Vandy player get half-game suspensions

Geathers

Geathers

As expected, Georgia’s Kwame Geathers and Shawn Williams were handed down half-game suspensions Wednesday for their actions during last Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt. Commodores center Logan Stewart was also levied a half-game suspension in the wake of the Bulldogs’ 33-28 win this past Saturday in Nashville.

The suspensions of the players were based on NCAA rules and handed down by Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive in consultation with the respective schools.

Williams

“I did have the opportunity to speak to the Commissioner and discuss the incident,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “It’s certainly not representative of the Georgia way. I have always trusted the Commissioner’s judgment and understand and accept the decision. We’ll learn as well as grow from this situation and now turn our attention to preparing for Florida.”

Following is the news release from the SEC, which explains its ruling in each instance:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Upon review of game tapes of the football game between the University of Georgia and Vanderbilt University, played in Nashville, Tenn. on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive has announced that Vanderbilt sophomore center Logan Stewart, Georgia sophomore defensive lineman Kwame Geathers and Georgia junior defensive back Shawn Williams have been suspended for the first half of their team’s next football games.

Vanderbilt hosts Army this Saturday while Georgia plays Florida in Jacksonville on Oct. 29.

Geathers’ action was in violation of NCAA Football Rule 2-32-1-a for fighting. By NCAA Football Rule 9-5-1-b, the penalty for violation of the rule in the second half includes suspension for the first half of the team’s next scheduled game.

On the same play, Stewart’s suspension is the result of a flagrant personal foul which occurred at the 13:09 mark in the fourth quarter. The action is in violation of Rule 9-1 of the NCAA Football Rule Book, which states that a flagrant personal foul offender shall be disqualified.

Williams’ suspension is the result of a flagrant personal foul which occurred at the 2:08 mark in the third quarter. The action is in violation of Rule 9-1-4 of the NCAA Football Rule Book, which reads, “No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, elbow or shoulder.”

This action is taken in accordance with Southeastern Conference Constitution, Article 4.4.2 (d), which states that a student-athlete may be suspended if it is determined that the student-athlete has committed a flagrant or unsportsmanlike act.

Geathers, a redshirt sophomore from Georgetown, S.C., has started three games at noseguard for the Bulldogs and alternates regularly with junior John Jenkins. He has seven tackles, a pass break-up and a quarterback pressure.

Williams, a junior from Damascus, has started every game this season, including one at inside linebacker. He is the Bulldogs’ third-leading tackler with 34 and has two interceptions, including one against Vanderbilt this past weekend.

Saturday’s game, clinched by Georgia in the final seconds, was extremely emotional. The night ended with Franklin and Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham a shouting match at midfield. The SEC asked for reports from both schools but about that incident but indicated Wednesday that the is being “handled internally between league office and schools,” spokesman Charles Bloom said.

Here’s video of the hit that resulted in Williams’ suspension:

The Vandy player should have been penalized at least a game. The UGA player reacted to a dirty play and should not have been penalized.

What a joke…FLA had a linebacker, Jon Bostic, take a swing at an Alabama player and the SEC didn’t see fit to suspend him. Slive is running this conference into the ground. Between the cheating and blatant preferential treatment that his office doles out, he will be the undoing of this conference.

And Vandy’s player has to sit against Army while UGA loses 2 starters in an SEC game. Yeah, thats equal.

The SEC and Mike Slive have no credibility. We can all point to countless examples of incidents such as these taking place over the past few years (Brandon Spikes, Cam Newton’s punch on Rambo following a run, too many Fairley hits to list). Slive got caught up in the frenzy created by the two blogger chicks (Bradley and Shultz) at the AJC and reacted to it.

Total garbage. Slive and the SEC are doing their best NCAA imitation here with this moronic ruling. The Vandy player intentionally tried to take out the knee of Geathers from behind. Could have ruined a career. And the SEC says the punishment for that is the same a Geathers punching the guy in the side in reaction??? And how in the world did they rule that Williams’ hit was intentional. I’ve watched that play over and over and it’s clear Williams had lost the ball and didn’t see the receiver didn’t catch it. Late hit/personal foul, sure, the flag was thrown. But intentional and flagrant foul? Give me a break. Richt and McGarrity shouldn’t take this laying down.

Wow,a flagrant clip, that could have ended Geathers career gets 1/2 a game!? I can’t say I blame him for throwing the punch. He was whipping Stewart at the line, so what better way to get a competitive advantage than a clip? Williams is just fall out from the b.s. with Franklin and Grantham. If you play the game full speed contact is going to occur, and yes sometimes it will be to the head and neck area. If the Grantham/Franklin altercation doesn’t occur, do any of the suspensions occur? I guess being the premier league comes with consequences….Let em play the game, and next time Kwame, the bottom of the pile is a much better place to take care of business!

OkieDawg

October 19th, 2011

INCREDIBLE! The Vandy player intentionally tried to chop/clip Geathers. Geather’s reaction was a spontaneous emotional reaction. The Vandy player’s actions could have resulted in a severe injury. Geather’s punch to the side would not cause an injury of any kind. So why doesn’t the Vandy player get a more severe penalty? He should sit for a full game while Geathers did break a rule and should get the one half game. I didn’t see it in the clip, but it was reported the Vandy player gave a thumbs up to his coach on the side line. Maybe, Coach Franklin should apologize for his player’s action to intentionally hurt a player.

What bothers me more than the half game suspension is how Coach Richt has yet to stand up ( at least nothing i have seen on tv or type) for his team and his coaches but I have seen several articles of how Richt told Franklin after hearing Franklins side that yeah that’s what I thought happened. Stand up for your team, and your coach. The least you could have said in the interview is I am waiting to talk with Coach Grantham and get his side instead of throwing him under the bus by saying Yeah thats what I thought to Franklin. Grow some gonads Richt and stop worrying about kissing theirs. Also in the Gawga Tenn game did not a Tenn player in front of a referee throw a punch to the face of a Gawga player and not a flag was thrown or a penalty handed out. Makes me think Slive and the sliveettes think Gawga has a shot of playing for the title and goodness forbid my actually upset an unbeaten team from the west and thus ruin another shot at a national championchyt.

Like others, I would comment that it seems unfair that Geathers is punished equally to the Vandy player for a reaction to his blatant and potentially career threatening dirty personal foul. The punishment for the Williams play seems legit to me given the current state of the rules. I hope Franklin doesn’t simply skate on this while Grantham gets popped. Franklin and Vandy had won the PR war up to this point. At least with the suspension of the Vandy player, it appears that the actions on both sides are being scrutinized. I’m not pleased with the Grantham reaction, particularly given the choke sign in Jacksonville last year, but Franklin has a bit of a history as well. For my part, I would rather see UGA’s players and coaches conduct themselves with class.

Dawg fans seem to have a short memory… Two Auburn linemen were suspended for the first half of the Alabama game last year after throwing punches in the UGA game. Ben Jones did not get suspended for punching Nick Fairley which actually started the fracas where the other two punches were thrown. He wasn’t suspended because no flag was thrown on his actions for a personal foul. Calls are missed every week, but the punishment for personal foul penalties called for punches seems consistent.

So of you people who come to these boards are so stupid, and I mean STUPID. People here are not upset over the suspensions, you jackhole’s, they ticked off over the fact that right now the SEC is showing a complete lack of consistency. All the dirty hits from players from other teams in the past on OTHER teams and no suspensions.

Do Geathers and Williams deserve the suspension? Yes, no one is really denying that. Stewart though, deserves worse for a hit that was blatantly late, on purpose, and after the play had ended. Watch the video, that’s what happened.

Then as far as Grantham and Franklin goes, as a coach from an opposing team, you don’t go after an opposing player and yell at him like you’re his dad. No, you let his coaches know how disappointed you were in his playing and let them deal with it. Grantham was right in standing up for his player(s), he should have just handled it better.

Then as far as all you FLA fans who come here, shut it. How pathetic do you have to be to go to another team’s articles and spout nothing but vitriol? That’s just sad beyond belief…

I understand the Geathers suspension, regardless of whether I agree with it or not. What I don’t understand is the S. Williams suspension. I’m a Georgia fan, but I’m not one of the people that was lambasting Fairly last year. It’s football, and while the NFL has gone to great lengths to protect players, never in my life have I heard of a COLLEGE player being suspended for “the result of a flagrant personal foul which occurred at the 2:08 mark in the third quarter. The action is in violation of Rule 9-1-4 of the NCAA Football Rule Book, which reads, “No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, elbow or shoulder.”

I really didn’t think Williams played the “dirty game” everyone is making it out to be. You can call him unsportsmanlike for taunting or whatever alleged trash-talk he was saying at the end of the game, but as far as his play on the field went, I didn’t think it was bad (and I thought one personal foul was bogus). Call me a homer if you want, but as I said, I wasn’t all over Fairly last year either.

At least it’s not a full game, but flags were thrown on EVERYONE involved in this suspension, and I personally think it should have just been left at that.

I can somewhat understand the Geathers suspension, if you call that a punch, but the Williams suspension is complete BS. SEC better get consistent and start handing out suspensions for late hits and apply it to ALL teams, including the teams they are protecting to get them into the BCS championship game/

All this energy focused on Auburn’s team last year for a fight at Vandy this year. You would have thought Auburn was responsible for all 7 of UGA’s losses last year and that Chizik had a time machine that enabled him to convince Hershel Walker to sign with an agent before his senior year. Perhaps some of you should read the parable of the two monks and the stream. Take a deep breath; it’s gonna be alright. I suspect these suspensions only came about because of the fracas at the end the game and all the attention it has drawn. I understand UGA fans being upset at Logan Stewart. It was a dirty play. But you can’t expect a punishment for Stewart and then criticize the punishment for Kwame Geathers. He decided to punish Stewart himself by punching him. There’s no place for that either. Let the referees and then the conference handle Stewart. He went vigilante and that’s always going to be punished.

Washuan Ealey got his eyes poked by Brandon Spikes. Ealey didn’t get up and try to kill Spikes. Spikes got punished after the game. That’s how to handle it.

Pitbull

Face it, Alabama and Auburn have Slive in their hip pockets. Those schools always benefit from ref calls and the team they play always suffer to the point that bad calls and no calls determine the number of wins those 2 schools get.

Slive is dirty and the Tech grad in charge of the refs is bad. Any time that ref team that cheated Georgia out of the win against Tech in 1998 with the fumble that wasn’t a fumble refs a Georgia game I just hold my breath. I think a guy named Penfors was the guy in charge who made the bad call that day. He should have been let go, but since it didn’t cost Alabama or Auburn a win, Slive let it go.

Don’t for get the bad calls against LSU against Alabama and against Miss State against Florida a couple of years ago when it was uncertain if it would be an undefeated Alabama or an undefeated Florida that would play Texas for a NC. All that was certain was that Slive was going to get an undefeated SEC team through the season to play undefeated Texas for a NC so the SEC could make more money.

Slive is dirty and the SEC office and refs are dirty. They all need to go and they need to go now. The presidents of the 10 other SEC schools need to vote them out and get fresh blood from outside the conference with no SEC school affiliations.

Both of those actions could have resulted in much more long lasting injuries (potentially permanent) than what a little rabbit punch to the gut from Geathers. The problem is that while Geather’s action probably would not have got him suspended after the fact on it’s own, it was tied to the “incident”. Compoinded by the coaches deal, which brought all the scrutiny .They HAD to suspend the Vandy kid for that, so there really wasn’t anything the SEC office could do but suspend Geathers too. Not sure what Williams did, but I’d bet it would not have drawn a suspension without the rest of this stuff.

The Orlando Sentinel reported Wednesday that true freshman cornerback Marcus Roberson was arrested and charged with underage alcohol possession Sept. 14, the week of the Gators’ game against Tennessee. Roberson was the second Floriday player arrested by the University Police Department that week, following now former Gator linebacker Dee Finley’s misdemeanor arrest two days earlier.

Roberson was arrested outside a campus residence hall after police officers reportedly spotted him with a can of Four Loko. He is being represented by Gainesville attorney Huntley Johnson, who (per the Sentinel, in a bit of an understatement) “frequently represents UF athletes.” Underage alcohol possession is a misdemeanor charge.

Roberson is the seventh Gator arrested this calendar year and the second to be cited for underage alcohol possession.

This is a crock. Geathers and Stewart-totally acceptable. The fact that they searched additional gametape to get williams for a non-mandatory suspension is clearly bias. Do they review every game and hand out arbitrary suspensions league-wide for personal fouls of the same ilk? Absolutely not, otherwise Fairley would have been suspended half the season last year. Jenkins, Ahmad Black, and Major Wright were NOTORIOUS for those exact kind of plays…as were Greg Blue, Boss Bailey and Sean Jones. This is one of the worst micromanagement decisions that I have ever seen. The SEC just gave itself a major black-eye in lieu of enabling the decisions to be handled by the Coaching Staff and Athletic Directors, which is what they should have done. Pure garbage.

Fairley only received one penalty, for the late hit against Murray. Georgia got called for chop blocking Fairley in that game, by your logic, that player should have been suspended too. Why didn’t that happen? None of this matters now. It’s not as if Fairley is still under the purview
of the SEC. If you’re still bitching about him now, it’s sour grapes.

Stat of the Week

For the third straight year, Auburn leads the SEC in personal foul and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, according to cfbstats.com. The Tigers have committed 15 in 2011 and average 1.9 per game over the past three seasons. The next most-penalized teams since 2009 for personal foul/unsportsmanlike conduct infractions are Florida (1.6 per game), Georgia (1.5) and Tennessee (1.3). Alabama has the fewest with 0.9 since 2009.

Based on the way the SEC dishes out punishment for punches, it looks like UGA will have a couple of free swings in the Florida game. Any suspensions would be applied during UGA vs. New Mexico State. Florida on the other hand will have to play Vandy. They may not be as willing to take a couple of swings. I like the way this fight is shaping up. Thanks to the suits in the SEC office.

Something to keep in mind dawg fans- I’m hoping our team doesn’t have the mental mistakes that we had in last year’s game… otherwise we probably will lose. But part of the reason for us being 1-5 in the last 6 is because of Meyer’s coaching. He was one of the best coaches in the country and in my opinion, a lot better coach than Richt. He is not at Florida anymore, so that advantage seems to be gone.

Blind Homer's Odyssey

October 19th, 2011
3:01 pm

I guess I really am blind as it just now occurred to me that the bug-eyed temper tantrum just elevated Grantham past St. Richt’s sainthood to deity? I must have missed the meeting. The majority of the perspectives apparent of us blind homers is that God Grantham was sacrificing his dignity, such that it is, in protection of his poor little defenseless motormouth and enforcer. Of course perspective is a narrow thing with us blind homers. We don’t see the just to the brink of flag dropping celebrations and exuberant dances after tackling a guy downfield as either offensive or ignorant. We also don’t see the jaws working and all of the other after whistle shenanigans as anything other than God Grantham’s inspiration. Of course, if a ref finally gets enough of the cumulative effect and finally drops his hankie it is only because Richt has always had a discipline problem.

Then in the end God Grantham gets to increase his legend with the blind homers by justly dispensing his wrath upon a vicious attacker to his flock. Never mind that the receiver of the attack had kicked sand into the eyes of the Great Satan Franklin. Never mind that he had coached and turned a blind eye himself to his own defensive player’s post-whistle handiwork, actually even blessed it by not even pulling the player for receiving the wrath of the referee. All can see that this is all the pretender St. Richt’s fault for not excusing these sinners and the newly deified Grantham’s star is on the rise.

Head Coach Grantham, Georgia’s Grantham, the taunting terrorists’ champion, all being whispered and bandied about. A fine representative of a fine institution.

I originally thought that Geathers should be suspended for the punch, but after seeing what the Vandy center did to him, I can’t blame the guy at all. Geathers was well behind the play and it was one of the cheapest shots that I have ever seen after watching it on the videos on the AJC site. A swipe at the Vandy player might have hurt it if connected, but it wouldn’t end his career. Geathers is lucky that his life wasn’t forever altered (NFL career)by that cheap shot.

That being said, I am fine with Williams suspension and actually think that Washington shouldn’t play against FL due to his DUI. If he does play, two games is just too little and is the minimum imposed by UGA for any alcohol infraction (if I understand that correctly).

It is one thing if a guy is just drinking underage. I think the drinking age should be 18 anyway, but that doesn’t put the public in danger. Washington put lives in danger by driving 90 miles an hour at 3 AM and his blood level was well over the legal limit. He could have killed or maimed someone and 2 games isn’t enough (if that is indeed the punishment).

All this whining you would think that the Georgia player didn’t do anything. He punched the guy and he received a half game suspension. Doesn’t matter why he did it. It’s the correct punishment.

Georgia and Vandy fans have their coaches to thank for having these young guys suspended. If the coaches would have been able to keep their cool then the issue would not have been reviewed like it was.

Brian

King Gator, understood. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that Georgia will play scared this year. Last year, we came back and almost won despite committing a ton of turnovers. Murray was a freshman and had to do almost everything himself because of our lack of a running game. Crowell is definitely an upgrade over King or Ealey, so if he is healthy, I like our chances on offense more than last year. The main problem I would see against Florida is big plays on special teams by Debose and Demps, if they are healthy and play.

Dirty Dawg

October 19th, 2011
3:07 pm

The thing that got Willliams was the second personal foul he had picked up during the game. This one, I think did occur in the fourth quarter and followed a late hit from a Vandy guy following the tackle – might have been on a kickoff return (one that didn’t go for a touchdown) – followed by a retaliation from the Georgia guy…followed by Williams jumping in and taking a swipe at another Vandy guy that had retaliated to the Georgia retaliation (by the way yet another Vandy guy, number 15 if I recall, but it might be someone else, also took a swing at Williams as he went by but that wasn’t called at all.

All in all, it was an ugly game and I’m afraid that both sides have to share the guilt. You can’t make me believe that all the cheap-shots that Georgia was receiving weren’t part of a plan to ‘bait’ us into just this kind of reaction. At the same time, we’ve got to just stop this ‘jaw-bonin’ crap, it’s classless and will only serve to get us in deeper she-ite with the Conference.

Mama Dawg, it can state the rule all they want, that doesn’t mean that’s what happens, it just means they have to have some black and white text to justify their actions of suspending players. I guess you just take everything the media says at face value and you certainly take everything the SEC office says at face value. Now get back to work, the Varsity is getting busy now.

Kendell, we have the lead in the series which has mostly been played in Jacksonville. It isn’t the location, it is the team playing against UF. Granted Spurrier is a very good coach who ripped most of the league while he was at Florida. Meyer was great with Tim Tebow. But the rest of the games we lost we didn’t want it as bad as the other guys. Just have to man up and play better.

Location has nothing to do with it IMO. Of course you are entitled to your opinion and I respect that.

First, Ybor is a freak show and I wouldn’t head that way without good reason. Second, I think I am ore upset over a disguised troll named Mama Dawg coming on here just to stir the pot that she is smoking with a weak analysis of the situation. Williams shouldn’t have been suspended because the play doesn’t fit the flagrant foul rule. Geathers getting the same suspension as a guy who played the little sissy role and instead of just playing football man to man, he tried to take out a guy for a long long time.

This would have been a non issue that would have been “handled internally.” We do nothing at UGA but eat our own, and at the slightest bit of controversy, Mr. Goody Two Shoes Richt calls the frigging SEC office and politely allows UGA to fall on the sword. the tool from Vandy should suspened 2 games at least. It was a blatant attempt to injur someone. and could’ve been a very seriour injury too. That have should have a more than just a half game suspension. Geathers threw a punch which is against the rules but circumstances should be looked at so he just have one quarter suspension. Shawn Williams suspension is fine. standard personal foul, standard suspension. There shouldn’t be any punishment for the coaches. they yelled at each other and looked ridicoulous. let’s just move past it.

I don’t expect him to condone bad behavior, but providing some context publicly would go along way to restoring my respect for him. Like last year Dareus for ALA takes $10,000 and gets 2 games and Green takes $1,000 and gets 4 games. The Vandy center clearly tried to hurt Geathers and he gets the same suspension? Since Slive loves the rule book so much the rule regarding the centers behavior is that the player should have been disqualified. Why wasn’t he? Why were the officials not penalized for not getting the call correct? Slive is playing favorites and it’s time for Richt to call him out on it. Richt should say, “We danced in the freaking end zone against Florida in freaking 2007. We embarrassed the SEC, Florida, CUM, and ourselves. We have already freaking apologized for it and we have already been abundantly penalized for it. It’s time for Commissioner Slive and the SEC officiating crews (Penn Wages) to get over it!!!!!!!!!!!”

Of maybe when Spikes tried to gouge Ealey’s eyes out and didn’t draw a flag or an SEC suspension? Since you apparently know nothing of the current culture, the choke sign was not a threat, it was CTG desire for your kicker to choke like he did a couple of times last year. He didn’t against the Dawgs and good for him, but Grantham was not threatening to choke him. You guys have won plenty in the series lately, but I promise we are still planning on showing up! I think we will be OK with Geathers sitting for a half game, but Williams suspension stings a little, even though a half game is not a lot. Don’t worry though Slive, Florida is still going to find it hard moving against UGA’s defense, so your symbolic gesture of showing leadership in the SEC, will not destroy the game being played. It will be a good game despite your attempt at making it less. Now, get back to your job, of bringing in schools, that discount the great tradition of the SEC, and make the title insignificant. It is suppose to stand for the South East Conference, a conference, with a long and storied history of fine sports, not a conference that gets two teams from the west and mid west and still tries to hold onto the name and history of the conference.

Now, as for that other stereotyping trash talking garbage that you spewed out (keep in mind there scooter that I live down here in Florida and you just described a lot of this state. We see towns like Umatilla, Apopka, and Gainesville on the show Cops quite often), keep it to yourself because you can’t say any of it without it describing what’s in your mirror. It was classless, baseless, and lacks any shred of character. If you want to have a football debate (this kind of goes back to what King Gator and I were talking about earlier), then have the debate. But don’t go talking crap on here that you can’t back up. You sound like a little teenager that hasn’t learned how to keep his dignity in a debate format yet. OXFORD, Miss. — Mississippi coach Houston Nutt says receiver Melvin Harris has been dismissed from the football team.

The 6-foot-6, 210-pound junior from Buford didn’t see much playing time this season with two catches for 21 yards and a touchdown. As a sophomore, he was second on the team with 30 catches for 408 yards and three touchdowns.

Dawgbreath…you are correct IMO that CMR knew there was nothing to be gained at that point with Franklin! Some on here want him to be out of control and some want a HC with class! Yes, I’m a Dawg fan, but I’m trying to step back and look at this without that influencing my opinion.
I agree with the poster earlier said Geathers should not have any punishment because it was a reactionary action against a malicious, deliberate attack that was aimed to “take him out”. Shots at the knees from behind like that, very often end a players career, especially someone of size of Geathers. Stewart, in my opinion, should be suspended a MINIMUM of 1 game. Not to mention the fact that he made a thumbs-up gesture to the sideline and seemed to get approval from the coaches!
As for Williams, if the hammer is to be brought down on Stewart, it needs to be brought down on Williams as well. I missed it during the game, but watching the tape that Vandy submitted showing the hit, it was totally unacceptable. Granted, a shot to the head might put someone out for that game or the next versus taking a man’s knee out, but it was still a blatant attempt to hurt him. If you have watched the tape, you see Williams absolutley launch himself off the ground and the receiver’s head well after the ball had passed over and the receiver was slowing down.
If we are going to scream for Stewart to get punished, the we need to ackowledge Williams is guilty of the same.

GAINESVILLE – Florida cornerback Marcus Roberson is facing an underage drinking charge following a September arrest.

Roberson, 19, was arrested by the University Police Department on Sept. 14 in the parking lot of the Springs Complex, which are residence halls on campus. According to the notice to appear, Roberson had a bottle of Four Loko. Roberson was 18 at the time of his arrest.

He was charged with possession of alcohol by a person under 21 years of age, a misdemeanor. Roberson is being represented by Huntley Johnson, a Gainesville attorney who frequently represents UF athletes. Johnson entered a plea of not guilty on Sept. 28. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for Nov. 7.

Roberson, a freshman from Ft. Lauderdale, has started all seven games for Florida (4-3, 2-3 SEC) and has 18 tackles. Rivals.com ranked Roberson as the No. 2 cornerback in the country coming out of St. Thomas Aquinas.

“The coaching staff was aware of the incident and it has been handled internally,” said UF spokesman Steve McClain.

——————————————————————————–
Video: FSU corner Greg Reid has put questionable arrest behind him
——————————————————————————–

He is the seventh Florida player to be arrested this year and second for underage drinking. Safety Matt Elam was arrested in July on the same charge.

Roberson was charged two days after teammate Dee Finley was arrested following a traffic stop at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Finley was originally charged with driving with a suspended license and resisting an officer with violence, a felony.

That charge was reduced on Sept. 13 to misdemeanor resisting an officer without violence. Finley was suspended for that week’s game vs. Tennessee. Florida announced last week that Finley, a reserve linebacker, would be transferring.

Finley is one of three players who were arrested that are no longer with the team.

LSU has reached the top spot in the BCS rankings despite becoming Team Turmoil for the 2011 season.

* An offensive coordinator diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease

* A bar brawl before the season

* Two players — including the starting quarterback — arrested due to the brawl

* NCAA probation handed down

* More NCAA questions asked about street-agent Willie Lyles

And now — if LSU’s student newspaper has got the story right – two key starters suspended for failing drug tests.

The Daily Reveille reported this afternoon that bruising tailback Spencer Ware and star cornerback Tyrann Mathieu will be suspended for Saturday’s game with Auburn “after reportedly failing a drug test” according to a source.

LSU officials neither confirmed nor denied the report.

According to the paper, “The suspensions could turn into multiple-game suspensions as well.”

What does MR’s team do? MR should have done something to get these players heads back in the game. MR just sits there like a knot on a log. We needed these two players for the Fl game. You have to realize if the incident at the end of game and the media running it all in the ground, forced the SEC to make a decision. If he incident after the game did not happen the players would not have been punished further. All the media fuss forced the commissioner’s hand and no he did not do anything about Franklin and Grantham…..Kind of like punishing the little guys in life and not the top dawgs…….Way to go media….Now find something else to complain about for UGA.

The Lyam Hound

So here’s what I’ve seen so far.

Wait… I should first mention that I probably wouldn’t have thought twice about the Vandy vs.Georgia game but for the heroic(?) actions of one Coach Todd Grantham after the contest had already ended.

Okay… Now back to the game. This outing wouldn’t have gone down as a particularly dirty SEC game. There were maybe a few personal foul calls. That typically happens in a game. Now that attention has been brought to the way the game ended, some are claiming that it was an extraordinarily dirty game, with the Vandy team committing chop blocks on a regular basis throughout the contest.

Well folks, I watched the replay on CSS today. I didn’t see any chop blocks and I didn’t see an unusual amount of cut blocking on the line either.

“So how about the youtube clips?”, you ask. Yes. I’ve seen those also. The block that triggered the punch from the Georgia player was close to being a clip. Perhaps it actually was. It appears as if the Vandy player got his head and shoulders in front of the Georgia player’s legs, but he was coming at an angle from behind. It’s certainly a close call. I wouldn’t consider that a block worthy of being called “dirty”, even if it was an illegal block. I don’t think this block would have triggered an SEC suspension, had it not been followed by the punch.

The other questionable block is less dubious. The Georgia player speared the Vandy player from behind. That was a dirty hit. It was clearly an intentional foul. There have been reports that this same player had, on multiple occasions, grabbed his crotch and made lewd exclamations toward the Vandy bench during the game, but I have seen no youtube video evidence of that happening. From reading reports of the incident, this is the same guy who was harassing Coach Franklin after the game.

If any particular football play (punching is not recognized as a “football” play) in that game brought the SEC into the picture, it was Georgia’s spear block from behind on the Vandy player. Still, I’m not sure there would have been a suspension handed down for that hit – had Coach Grantham not had to be restrained from engaging in physical violence in front of a national television audience after the game was already over.

OK, let me get this straight: two adults who are paid millions to coach, the head coach for Vandy and the Def Coord for UGA meet at the middle of the field. Franklin starts yelling, pointing and accusing, and starts a heated altercation that almost turns into a nasty brawl. He turned a calm Grantham into a profane basket case in five seconds. He must have been very nasty and caustic in his attacks. And nothing happens to the two adults–particularly to the guy who started the fight–Vandy’s head coach? This is the pinnacle of double standards. Punish the coaches Mr. Slive, particularly Franklin! Williams’ cheap shot wasn’t even flagged by the ref who was standing right on top of the play, btw. That tells us what we already knew–this stuff happens every single week in every game. But, Franklin picks a fight and they punish Georgia for it? Fairley used to do worse several times a game and he never got suspended. I wish they *would* start applying discipline uniformly, but they have to do it to every team, not just Georgia. I also wish they would start flagging trash talking and profanity from coaches. It is getting out of hand. Coaches get away with murder and the players get slammed. What would Slive do to a player who was yelling profanities at a ref? You just have to be a coach making millions to get away with it.

I’m not a Vandy or Georgia fan, but I like both schools. I have friends and family who have attended both schools. That’s why I was watching the game to begin with. I’m sorry that this happened – for both schools, and for the SEC.

Lyam,
that isn’t the point. Of course, calls will be missed, but the SEC has had a terrible problem with inconsistent calls, and the front office has a terrible problem with inconsistent discipline. I see spearing in almost every game, but they don’t call it, and the SEC doesn’t suspend anyone. I see players trash talking and showing terrible sportsmanship, and coaches screaming profanities at the refs, and the SEC does nothing. I’m fine with the suspensions, but they should have suspended Franklin and Grantham, and they need to start suspending other teams who commit these fouls. It happens on every team.

Yes, he is pointing. Watch the tape. You are probably looking at youtube clips. Watch the game tape. Franklin is walking toward Grantham pointing at Williams and yelling from a distance. Grantham is calm, and double takes when he realizes what Franklin is saying. Grantham says he was defending his player. The next thing we see is the policeman trying to keep Franklin and Grantham apart, and Grantham screaming obscenities at Franklin. No, we don’t know what was said, but we do know that Franklin initiated the altercation. We know that Grantham was perfectly calm, and in “shake the other team’s hand” mode, when he was jarred into very uncharacteristic and foul behavior by Franklin. We know that Franklin was unhappy with Williams and that he said he wasn’t going to take it from anyone. I think it is very obvious that Franklin was attacking Georgia’s players, and if Geathers is right, his staff was directing cheap shots to injure Georgia players. Maybe he told Grantham that he tried to take Geathers out? Who knows, but it really made Grantham mad–whatever he said, and he felt he needed to defend his players. Spin it however you would like, but that is the evidence.

No, I am looking at the evidence. You are the one assuming. You are assuming that you know that Franklin wasn’t pointing when he clearly was pointing. I suspect you are assuming what you see on youtube or on the AJC is all there is to it. Watch the game tape. You are also assuming Grantham went from happy Cub Scout to an angry bear protecting his cubs for no reason! What do you think Franklin said to make Grantham so angry? We know that Grantham said he was defending his players, so I think it is fair to assume Franklin was attacking Georgia’s players. I am also reading what Mr. Geathers said, rather than assuming your story line is true. I’m not defending Grantham. He should have known better than to get drawn into it. My beef is that the punishment wasn’t fair. Franklin should have been suspended for a couple of games, and Grantham should have been suspended for a game or two. The players were singled out. Think of the terrible fouls that have occurred in SEC and nobody got suspended. I am all for discipline, but they have to do it consistently. They can’t just suspend Georgia and Vandy’s players for infractions that occur almost weekly in the SEC.

This is the most unfair conference I have ever seen, and I watch college football each Saturday and have been for years. Auburn released a press release tonight formally apologizing for playing football too “hard” and tackling in a rough manner in the game last year. We also accept Coach Granthams assertion that Cam Newton “is not that special” in his post game interview from the same game.

Bulldogs who played for the likes of Erk and Vince (both Auburn grads) understand why this team has not mattered in a while. You are soft and cry like a C-USA team when someone takes it to you. The one that sent me a letter in the mail saying I was accepted to Auburn … and I never even applied. Yep. No school in the SEC can disappear faster into irrelevancy than Auburn … until they find a way to lure players to their trash dump of a city and school with cash. Nothing like a legacy that not even a temporary halting of an NCAA investigation can erase.

For example, what really happened between V Dooley and that lady cop in New Orleans back in the day?

[...] Here’s what the SEC had to say about that: Williams’ suspension is the result of a flagrant personal foul which occurred at the 2:08 mark in the third quarter. The action is in violation of Rule 9-1-4 of the NCAA Football Rule Book, which reads, “No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, elbow or shoulder.” [...]

I have to disagree with “Not a Chop Block”.
You’re right that the hit from Williams was completely uncalled for and I have said the same. You are also right that the head shot “could” have put the Vandy player in a wheelchair, but look at the averages. 99% of the time, a head shot leads to nothing, out for the game, or maybe out for the next game with a concussion. Rarely does anything serious come from it.
The shot to back of the knees (espcially on a 300+ lb man) can lead to out for the season or the end of a career. Shots to the knees like that have a much higher chance of truly hurting a player.
