SEC discipline likely forthcoming for Georgia, Vandy players, coaches

ATHENS – Georgia expects to hear back from the Southeastern Conference sometime this week regarding possible disciplinary action against coaches and players in the wake of last Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt.

UGA and Vanderbilt were each asked to submit reports about the post-game skirmish that took place following the Bulldogs’ 33-28 win over the Commodores. After the game concluded, Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin and Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham ended up in a shouting match at midfield. Both coaches could be subject to fines, suspensions and/or reprimands from SEC Commissioner Mike Slive for showing a lack of sportsmanship with their finger-pointing, obscenity-laced exchange.

Meanwhile, there is a very good chance discipline could be forthcoming for players based on their actions during the game. Georgia noseguard Kwame Geathers was flagged for a personal foul for punching Vanderbilt center Logan Stewart at the end of of the Commodores’ second offensive play of the fourth quarter. Geathers’ punch was retaliation for a late-hit by Stewart in which he intentionally clips the back of Geathers’ left knee, an extremely dangerous angle that could have resulted in serious injury. Stewart was flagged for clipping on the play and could be disciplined for the hit.

Georgia senior center Ben Jones was flagged for a similar penalty in the 2010 Mississippi State game and was suspended for the first half of the Bulldogs’ next game against Colorado. Georgia’s next game this year is against Florida in Jacksonville on Oct. 29.

“We’re not sure what’s going to happen,” Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity said Tuesday. “We’re at the mercy of the SEC. We don’t know if anything is imminent or not. Our only experience is with Ben Jones last year.”

Jones’ discipline was not announced last season until right around kickoff of the Colorado game. At the time it was stated that both Georgia coach Mark Richt and Slive had reviewed tape of the Mississippi State game and agreed that a one-half suspension was warranted.

Here’s the release UGA sent out that day:

University of Georgia center Ben Jones will sit out the first half of the Saturday game against Colorado as a result of a late clipping penalty he incurred in the closing minutes of last week’s game at Mississippi State.

UGA head coach Mark Richt and SEC Commissioner Mike Slive both reviewed game tapes and conferred during this past week. Both agreed the half game suspension was in order.

“It was poor judgment on Ben’s part,” said Richt. “He feels very badly about the incident and has sent a note of apology to the Mississippi State player. I have talked with (Mississippi State Coach) Dan Mullen and he appreciated the concern and Ben’s apology.”

Meanwhile, McGarity does not believe Georgia is an undisciplined team. He pointed out that the Bulldogs entered last Saturday’s game as the SEC’s fourth-least penalized teams. Georgia has been flagged for five personal fouls in seven games this season and all have come in the last two games, two against Tennessee and three against Vanderbilt.

“That’s not a reflection of our team this year,” McGarity said. “The Vanderbilt game hopefully was an aberration. We had a bad second half against Tennessee and lost our composure against Vanderbilt.”

It is a slight black eye but these things do happen. If I was Kwame the Tsunami I would have done the same thing though. A cut shot to the left knee could end a player’s career

Absolutely NO WAY a player gets suspended.

Look at what Slive let Nick Fairley get away with last year against UGA:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xljcMJxJZg

Slive overlooked it because Auburn was making the SEC look good.

This year Georgia is the best in the SEC East, and attracting the most attention for the SEC East.

Will Slive be dumb enough to cut off his own foot?

Everybody is making such a big deal about Grantham but I can see the Conference coming down on the players harder than the coaches. Late hits, hits below the knees and punching shouldn’t be tolerated. While I would rather CTG display behavior more becoming of an adult, the exchange with Franklin to me is WAY overblown. Two coaches following a hard fought game cussing and yelling at each other. Big freakin’ deal!

Or maybe the SEC will declare them ineligible and then 12 hours later declare them eligible again. You know they do that sometimes.

What about disciplining Will Muschamp every time he opens his mouth??? Talk about “lack of sportsmanship.” Every time they show Muschamp he is railing referees with profanity.

They thing that has bugged me is the over attention to Grantham and the lack of attention on Franklin by most. He admits he tried to find Coach Richt but couldn’t so he took matters into his own hands. That clearly involved running his mouth to a college player he was not responsible for. Grantham overreacted, but Franklin was the instigator here. He should have just gotten his players off the field and then called Coach Richt about it later. Grantham should have done the same. Both were at fault here and it would be nice for other writers and media people to make this claim as well.

If the SEC punishes anyone it should be Franklin and Stewart.

I just hope the SEC, unlike the AJC and media at large, will acknowledge Franklin was out of line for pointing and yelling at Georgia players and provoking Grantham. Franklin has played this thing up and blown it out of proportion in an effort garner media attention and make a name for himself. Not once in any of his statements has Franklin apologized or acknowledged he instigated the incident or did anything wrong. He has played the poor pitiful little victim the whole time and played the media like a fiddle.

I am sick of this story which has been one sided and anti UGA from the start.

Why is it that we beat teams like MSU and Ole Miss with dominating performances, and we get no respect. But LSU beats MSU by the same margin of victory with very comparable stats and no one can wait long enough to stuff that tiger’s D^<K in their mouths?

You can perform a crack back block and possibly blow a player’s knee out and not get suspended but you can’t punch a player who has a helmet on without getting suspended.

What every happenend when the UF linebacker tried to gouge out the eyes of the UGA RB?

The key word here is “retaliate”. Geathers got clipped from the back, low, and retaliated. Coach Franklin jumped on Shawn Williams after the game. Grantham retaliated. Notice, VANDY started all this, after a hard fought loss.

Brantley won’t be back for that game. I highly doubt that Demps will be either. It’s a high-ankle sprain on a QB’s post leg. That injury takes a minimum of 5 weeks to heal, and even if it does, it is extremely nagging. I hope they do try to put Brantley in, b/c he won’t be able to step up in the pocket or throw over his off shoulder.

Beginning to think that people are right about Frankling being Kiffin Light.

Slive suspended Jones for 1/2 of the Colorado game. A game that did not affect the SEC at all (aside from the embarrasment we brought on the SEC by losing–that is.)

I think the penalties being handed down will be determined by whether or not Slive thinks UGA is a threat to LSU or Bama in the SEC Championship game. I don’t think we are and nobody thinks USC is without Lattimore–but maybe Slive will think Florida is with a healthy Brantley.

If Slive thinks healthy Brantley might beat an undefeated team in the SEC Championship–no suspension for Geathers.

If Slive thinks UGA is more of a threat than Florida–full game suspension for Geathers.

No matter which team from the east goes to the dome…they will be playing 11 vs 30 (that is: the other 11, 5 refs, and Mike Slive–who counts as 14 players when he doesn’t want you to win).

Nobody–and I mean nobody–is going to mess up a chance for another SEC National Championship!
