UPDATED WITH COMMENTS FROM TODD GRANTHAM (11:25 A.M.). . .

ATHENS — Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity has already met with defensive coordinator Todd Grantham regarding the postgame confrontation with Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin on Saturday and the Southeastern Conference is in the process of reviewing the incident.

McGarity, who was in Nashville on Saturday, said he discussed the situation with Georgia head coach Mark Richt by telephone on Sunday, then met with Grantham face-to-face at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall early Monday morning. Meanwhile, both Georgia and Vanderbilt have been asked by SEC Commissioner Mike Slive to submit written reports to the league office for review.

“I spoke with the Commissioner earlier today and they are in a sort of fact-finding process now,” McGarity said. “We’ll submit a report either verbal or in writing. I’m sure Vandy will do the same and then, basically, we’ll see what happens at that point in time.”

As for his meeting with Grantham, McGarity said, “I’d just say those discussions will remain private, but I’ve addressed it with both Coach Richt and Coach Grantham. There were lessons to be learned here. Obviously the conduct that was displayed was not representative of how we want to conduct ourselves after a hard-fought game.”

Grantham and Franklin were caught on video in a heated, finger-pointing exchange immediately after Georgia’s 33-28 win over Vanderbilt had concluded. Moments before that, Franklin is observed yelling at Georgia safety Shawn Williams.

The Bulldogs were flagged three times for personal fouls in the game and, in one instance, it appears Georgia noseguard Kwame Geathers tries to punch a Vanderbilt player. But McGarity said UGA’s reports to the SEC will not address anything that took place during the game.

“The conference does that anyway,” he said. “That’s part of their normal, standard operating procedures where they’ll go through it. Each team submits plays to review and they review things without either team submitting them. That’s just basic standard operating procedure there, things that happen during the game. I’m sure they’ll review the clips and I’m sure they’ll review the personal fouls. They do that all the time. That’s part of their weekly tasks.”

SEC Associate Commissioner Charles Bloom confirmed the postgame confrontation is being investigated.

“The conference office is gathering information from all parties about the incident,” Bloom said via email. “Too early to comment on it.”

Bloom indicated the SEC might have a response by Tuesday.

Grantham, in his second season as the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator, was reprimanded by UGA last year after directing a choke signs toward Florida kicker Chas Henry before he tried a game-winning field attempt in overtime.

Grantham told the AJC Monday morning he regretted his actions after Saturday’s game.

“First of all, I love my players and appreciate their hard work and investment in our program,” Grantham said. “I feel a responsibility and loyalty to protect and stand up for them. However, I feel it’s important to educate them in all areas of life. While my intentions were genuine, I feel it was unfortunate that things escalated to a confrontation. However, I’ll use it as a learning experience for myself as well as my players so that we all become better men.”

Meanwhile, Franklin was asked at his weekly news conference on Monday if he had followed up on the incident. He said he Richt talked via telephone about the situation on Sunday and indicated there had been some correspondence with the SEC office.

“We have a very, very talented commissioner and they’ll do their job and do what they think is right and we’re going to move forward,” Franklin said as video of his 1 p.m. news conference was streamed live via the school’s website. “I have tremendous respect for the University of Georgia, their history, their program, their coach. We had a hard fought battle with a lot of passion, with a lot of emotion. . . . Some things got a little bit out of hand and I know myself and Coach Richt — I don’t want to speak for him — would have liked for the game to have ended a little differently and been able to just walk off the field.”

Asked specifically if he had any personal regrets with the way he behaved at the end of the game, Franklin said: “I’m not a guy who really has a whole lot of regrets. I’m pretty calculated and pretty well thought out for the most part with the things I do. I am an emotional guy, as you guys know.”

Speaking to the Touchdown Club of Atlanta today, Greg McGarity had more to say about the matter:

“I think the whole story will come out at some point in time. Right now both institutions are basically filing a report to the Southeastern Conference office on really what happened from Todd’s standpoint and, I’m sure, from Coach Franklin’s standpoint.  That will go to the commissioner, and then we’ll see where things go after that. But I don’t think there’s any question that . . . at the end of the day that’s not the way you want to end athletics competition. It’s kind of like Mark said after the game: ‘At the end of the game, you want to go over there and shake the opponent’s hand and move on to the next game.’

“I won’t get into specifics, but I think if you ask Todd if he had to do it over again, I think he definitely would do some things differently. I think that’s not the way you want to represent your institution on either side. At the end of the day, I think you’ll see that. But I know Todd is in the process of making a statement. We want to get ahead of this and deal with it up front to where there’s nothing out there that we need to be worrying about the rest of the week.

“It was kind of like we saw at the end of the NFL [49ers-Lions game] yesterday –- I think we had a situation there with a couple of coaches. Things get heated. There probably are a lot of things people would like to take back, but at the end of the day that’s not what needs to happen in college athletics. We need to talk about the student-athletes and what they did that day — and not reduce it to where things off the field are the topic of discussion during that day.  So it’s something we’re really not proud of, and we’ll deal with it and learn from it and also teach our student athletes on the positives and negatives of situations like that.”

AJC reporter Tim Tucker contributed to this report.

Here is the bottom line folks. Both coaches were in the wrong. Franklin was wrong for yelling at Wiliams and starting the whole thing. He should have kept his composure and taken his complaints to Coach Richt and/or the SEC Commission after the game. Grantham was wrong for confronting Franklin. He still has to remember who he is and hold himself to a higher standard. The SEC should hand out punishment to both parties. The whole incident could have gotten much more out of hand and resulted in a brawal with a lot of players getting suspended. That’s why it’s not acceptable for either coach to act in such a manner. For the idiots that have criticized CMR for his “lack of emotion and fire”, this is why it is good that we have a HC that doesn’t lose his mind. I am not going to be surprised at all if Franklin has more problems down the road. You can bet Muschamp may run into problems too if he does not keep a check on his emotions. Someone has to keep their composure or bad things can happen.

In looking at all these comments from UGA fans supporting Grantham, its no wonder Georgia is considered the least classy team in the SEC.

@Joe…and your school is? Hmmmm Georgia’s players, you know the kids that actually play the game, are going to be behind Grantham like you can’t imagine. The H with the rest of you. Love it!!!

If some opposing coach yelled at my kid and his coach didn’t not defend him, I’d be in my son’s coaches face so fast it would make his head spin. Screw all this PC, nice BS.

The Nashville site someone linked has the video from an earlier point and in slow motion. You see the UGA players spread all over a 30 yard area with helmets in hand and #36 skipping away trying to get high fives from his buddies as if he has done something clever. Franklin and the cop are then tracking him and trying to point him out and you know the rest. This gives credence to what Tampa Dawg said above but three wrongs don’t make a right.

You’ve just won the game by the skin of your teeth. A kid running his mouth in any way to the defeated team’s coach should be nothing more than “good game”, we all know this is a farce even in Pop Warner but it is the way it has always been done. That being said Franklin should have been MAN enough to take this up at a later time via email to Richt or something along those lines. He didn’t and tried to air his grievance with Grantham whose fuse appears to be shorter than the hair on a gnat’s hind quarters. Grantham comes off looking the worst since he is obviously on 10 with veins popping while facing the camera. He looks like Meat Loaf on an overdose of both amphetamines & rhoids trying to belt out a song full of F bombs. Not a pretty picture no matter how you slice it.

Overall a kid doing a kid thing instigated something that drew a coach from both sides to demean themselves. Number 36 needs some bleacher time for making his team and coach look bad. Franklin should get a hand slap from the SEC as should Grantham. Incident closed with the exception that maybe Vandy games will have more than a little fire in the future, hopefully only on the field during the game.

For all you testosterone-laced morons who think you have to scream and make a fool of yourself to be manly, Richt or Grantham could have challenged Franklin without looking like such a fool. They are an embarrassment.

I gotta say again…particularly since folks are laying this off on our #36, Shawn Willilams…whatever he said that Franklin over-reacted to…and then Grantham to Franklin’s reaction…take a moment to realize that Williams’ emotional response was in response to a game-long series of cheap-shots designed to ‘bait’ Georgia’s players and, ultimately, was behind Grantham’s blow-up. And while you’re thinking about that, ask yourself who was responsible for the baiting strategy…then you can call Georgia names if you like, and I agree that there were better ways of handling this from the get-go, but we won’t stand for any of their crap either.

Franklin went after a player, therefore, the scrutiny should be on him more so than on Grantham. I don’t blame Grantham at all no matter what the player did that ultimately irked Franklin. Franklin is trying to cover his hide and place the blame on Grantham. As much as I like and respect Richt, he should not have accepted Franklin’s version of the events (when they spoke on the field) without first watching the footage. He should have his fellow coach’s back. Franklin is a punk.

I bet Joe (11:49 post) was thrilled when he heard about or saw the fracas on the field just so he could taunt Dawg fans about it on a blog in the days to follow. I bet he stayed awake last night hoping for just the right blog to post links and call UGA classless. What a life this guy has. Wonder what team he pulls for…could it be Tech? You know I bet it is…Saturday’s loss to Virginia must sting (pun intended), so he had to post a jab at Dawg fans so that it would ease the pain of his team’s loss to an awful team. Not to mention he has to get the jabs in before UGA smacks Tech around (again) in November. Poor little troll.

The Lack of Discipline in The University of Georgia Football Program has been an on-going issue since 20 December 2000, and has continued unabated. I refuse to make Excuses for those who represent this Program which I have poured so much of my monies, energy and time into. Mark Richt hired Todd Grantham. Mark Richt recruited the 30 individuals and gave them Scholarships to my alma mater who were supposed to have played vs their coach and Vanderbilt on Saturday, who did not play vs them. Some of their stories of these 30 individuals, early on, were made public enough for us to know what happened to each. Others, more recently this Football Program now wishes to Try to Cover-Up. Our Star Running Back has been front-and-center with his unsportsmanlike actions after nearly every play; and, yet the Officials at each game to-date, have not; Our Leaders on the Field Have Not; and, Glaringly our Coaching Staff, have Not done or said anything in Public to the Millions who look up to these Role Models in our Society. For 11 years now, our Players have been given Preferential Treatment if they are a Star Player in this Program. If they are Not Star Players, they get completely different treatment. I was told that The School I hold my Pigskin from would always make it public when a player is arrested and suspended; This is Not Happening at This Time. We have had several incidents this Season, having Won the Fulmer Cup last season, that it appears this Athletic Department Administration has Covered-Up. Sure the Bad Press has been Overwhelming. When you take the # 11 all-time 1-A wins’ football program, and put up the won/lost results we have after the 2005 season, which was Seven (7) seasons ago, of outside the Top 25 including the win Saturday, it is obvious that the results on the field are not good. The head football coach here, has Lied to the Press about what we deserve and were promised we would be getting full disclosure on. Open Records States, such as Georgia, are supposed to insure that our Youth are not looking up to as Role Models those who do not in the least represent the ideals ingrained to me in my hard studies at The University of Georgia. You could get into specifics, such as what has our Leader on the Field, Quarterback who has been on campus since the bowl game practice 2008 done about the antics on TV by our Star Tailback. What have the Offensive Coordinator and his Staff of Running Backs’ Coaches and others on the offensive coaching staff done about these bravura actions, unsportsmanlike to the very core; what have the Defensive Coordinator and his defensive coaching staff done about these insidious plays we witness on a weekly basis ? Indeed is it worth noting while all this Storm of Controversy ensues on this off-week prior to playing a football team this staff is 2-8 against in our own Division of The SEC, that there are many who posted to blogs at this very site, who have Defended The UGA DC now this week for Standing Up for His Players. They are Not His Players; they are Mark Richt’s, and please note that Mark Richt – whom bloggers are really defending in this last season for him to Right this Ship on and off the field for all This Bad Press Daily for 11 years and Mounting – has publically called out His Own players here at UGA and called out His Own Coaching Staff, he alone hired and he alone is responsible for. Mark Richt is Responsible for the Actions of the Players He Gives Scholarships to to My University, while 2 weeks ago I received my call, as did you, from The University of Georgia to Donate further funds so that this University can be Represented in This Fashion. We are told that all the previous arrests are over; Are They ? We know for a Fact, they are Not and that This University has Seen Fit to Hide and Cover-Up the Arrests as best they can to contain at least that part of this Unholy Unruly Group of Scholarship Football Players representing what this coaching staff wants to be represented by. And, so we have allowed this coaching staff to run-off, to force the Scholarship Players they were heralded in the Press for Bringing Here in Recruiting Classes which for 11 consecutive years now have averaged the # 7 Recruiting Class, averaging both of the most high profile recruiting ranking services. But, whom have we chosen and who is it that is teaching and coaching these Scholarship Recruits, and what example are they giving to a World now-a-days which sorely needs and hungers for Good Leadership – winning on the Field and winning off the field, or after the game is over. If you are in year 11 and you can name 120 different arrests from the WebPages of this site’s articles, you have a problem. The solutions seems to be to cover it up. And, if bravura from the players is to be revered; then why can no one point out that it is the head football coach who does not have the backs of his players and does not have the backs of his coaching staff – saying both are way wrong. This do-nothing athletic director has certainly done nothing. And, this do-nothing president of The University of Georgia has certainly done nothing for the longest time of all of them. And, so here we are the 1st BCS Poll out for the season and despite 5 consecutive wins, we are not ranked in the Top 25 of the BCS. Instead, preparing for an opponent we have beat 2 times in the tenure of this president of UGA, we are now faced with an internal investigation and SEC investigation that sportsmanship in collegiate football at this University is under siege now; and, make no mistake about it, this – not high school and certainly not in the NFL – is where we shall have NCAA standards of Sportsmanship Upheld. This University certainly does not know what it is doing.

The more that comes out about this incident the bigger whiner Franklin looks like. He looks like the biggest pinhead in the video clip poor mouthing to CMR. I am glad CMR keeps a cool head in these situations. He seems like the only adult on the field. My guess is that this will not be the last time we see Franklin in this situation. You can bet on it.
