Georgia, Vanderbilt coaches discuss postgame skirmish

NASHVILLE – Forget Georgia-Florida, Georgia-Auburn or Georgia-Georgia Tech. The new white-hot rivalry for the Bulldogs may be with Vanderbilt.

Players and coaches had to be separated following the Bulldogs’ hard-fought, emotional 33-28 win. The game wasn’t decided until Vanderbilt tight end Branden Barden of Lincolnton, Ga., was corralled at the Georgia 16-yard line as time expired.

Immediately afterward, a skirmish ensued between the teams that appeared to be mostly yelling and gesturing and little actual physical confrontation. Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham was a central figure in the fray.

Grantham pretty much refused to comment directly what went on with Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin at the end of the game. All he would say and kept repeating was, “I love our players. I’m going to stick up for my players. Everybody’s competitive.”

Franklin was a little more telling with his comment: “We just had a tough, emotional game and some things were said that I didn’t think were appropriate. I went to find Coach Richt and didn’t find him, so I found one of his assistant coaches and it didn’t go well. We’re not going to sit back and take it from anyone.”

Franklin said he eventually found Richt.

“I explained to him what happened,” Franklin said. “That’s for me and Coach Richt to deal with. Hopefully we’ll learn from that experience. Those things happen.”

Replays after the game show Grantham screaming at Franklin in the middle of the field as the players from both teams stood across opposing lines separated by coaches in the middle.

Grantham was reprimanded by Richt last year when he made the choke sign toward Florida kicker Chaz Henry as he prepared to make a game-tying field goal attempt to send the game into overtime. Henry made the kick and the Gators went on to win.

Georgia was called for three personal foul penalties in Saturday’s game and Richt clearly wasn’t happy with the way his players or his coaches acted at the end of the emotional contest.

“I don’t know exactly what happened. Maybe TV picked it up and we’ll get a better view of what was going on. But we are grown men and we need to act that way. But we’re also competitors and we all have emotions and xometimes when you get a little fired up it’s hard to keep from getting in some kind of jawing contest.

“I’ll say this: There were times when I was ashamed of some of the choice things that came out of my mouth during the game. So I’ve got to be disciplined, too.”

On the fracas between the two teams at the end of the game, Richt said:

“I don’t know for sure what heppened. I’ve heard a couple of different sides of the story. It’s hard to know which one is 100 percent the truth. But the bottom line is when the game is over the game’s over. You shake hands and you be thankful for the victory. Just like at the end of a play. When a play’s over, it’s over. Go to the sideline. We didn’t do a very good job of that at times.

“It was heated. It IS battle. It’s not war with real bullets but it’s a war in a sense and it’s very physical. Tempers do get flared up. I don’t mind our blood getting hot but we have to be able to get excited or maybe even angry but not foul.”

Georgia was penalized 11 times for 89 yards in the game and generally played sloppy and without poise. When the Bulldogs were trying to salt the game away in the fourth quarter, they threw an interception, lost seven yards and had to punt on one possession, and finally had a punt blocked on its last possession.

Georgia senior punter Drew Butler should probably go down as the hero of the game. After the punt was blocked by another Georgia native — wide receiver Udom Umoh of Fort Valley — Butler managed to gather his wits quick enough to haul down Umoh at the 20 after Umoh had scooped up the ball.

After an illegal substitution penalty, the Commodores got off two plays before the game ended. The first was a pass in the end zone that bounced off the hands of receiver Chris Boyd, another Georgia native, from Roswell.

Said Grantham, whose unit gave up 349 yards to Vandy: “The bottom line is we stopped them three times in the fourth quarter when they had a chance to win the game.”

Said Richt: “I think Vanderbilt did a fantastic job. They were inches from winning the ballgame.”

Tailback Isaiah Crowell did not play the entire first quarter. Richt said it was “just a situation where it was a coach’s decision not to play him.”

Crowell. finished with 35 yards on 10 carries. He did not play late in the game because of the wrist injury that has plagued him the last three weeks, according to Richt.

Here’s some video of Coach Franklin’s postgame news conference:

Dang, not first… from what I’ve heard the heated discussion was due to cut/chop blocks throughout the game that Vandy was throwing. Oh well… a win is a win. Take the bye week to get healthy and come up with a game plan to beat the Gators.

Six straight weeks of ball especially after a tough night game away will wear down any team. We just saw a depleted, injured and tired Georgia team win. We should be thankful. Give them two weeks to rest up and recover.

It’s about time someone on the coaching staff shows some passion. I don’t blame CTG. The Vandy players (OL) were getting cheap shots all night and Franklin deserved to get an earful for it. *sigh* oh well… the game is over. On to the Gators. Thanks for the reporting, Chip.

Coach..lettme help you with what’s “which one is 100 percent the truth”….the one YOUR TEAM tells you. Back up your coach if you’re a LEADER. I really support you coach but after reading that garbage it sounds like your spineless and won’t back up your players, maybe thats why the team has played like it has…you don’t back them so why should they back you. Thats about the most classless comment I’ve ever seen Coach Richt make.

Vandy was playing dirty most of the games. That was one poorly officiated game. Their was multiple clips I seen from Vandy, a helmet to helmet on Murray, as well as some illegal blocks and holds that were not called. A lot of people (coaches, players, and officials) are to blame for all this.

Are you guys stupid?

The Vandy coach NEVER went after a player. He went straight after Grantham for some reason. And the only players cheap shotting out there were Georgia players. Stop crying about the cut blocks, no one saw those but the rabid redneck Georgia fan base. Everyone else saw the personal fouls on Georgia and the punch thrown by Geathers. And everyone else saw your defensive coordinator look like an idiot at the end of the game.

My rebuttal?:

“Character, in the long run, is the decisive factor in the life of an individual and of nations alike.”
— Theodore Roosevelt, American adventurer and 26th president (1858-1919)

“Society’s demands for moral authority and character increase as the importance of the position increases.”
— John Adams, American Founding Father and second U.S. president (1735-1826)

A grown man screaming at teenagers for his shortcomings in what was a VICTORY shows a huge lack of character and class. It’s no wonder UGA can only beat winless teams

CTG is the man! Love the fire! You folks talking smack about “oh, it’s just Vandy…how could you look so stupid…we are aweful” are blinded by your own fantasies about what football really is. Do you really think teams that are bad at one point in the season are always bad? Have you ever watched an entire football season in your life? This Franklin dude seems like a hell of a coach. His team is improving. They fell short tonight, and he was mad. He was mad at what he thought were cheep shots by UGA. He obviously blames that on CTG because he made sure to talk in his press conference about his “tremendous respect” for CMR, overly so. He no doubt was going to give CTG a piece of his mind. This is not unlike when a baseball manager yells at the umpire for five minutes about a call he thought was bogus. It will never change a thing that has happened. The only difference is that CTG doesn’t have to stand there and take it like some first base ump. He was standing up for himself, his players, and UGA’s place in the college football world. The day a UGA coach lets some Vandy coach, or any coach for that matter, talk to him like he is his daddy, that is when you should be upset. What was he supposed to do? Say “Whoa, man. This hostility is uncalled for, and you should really take a minute to calm down. I don’t think you really mean what you are saying.” Or what about “You know, you’re right. My players had no right to play the game the way they did. Do you think you could come over for an ice-cream social and enlighten them on the proper way to play defensive football? That would be a real help.” Point being, you don’t walk across the field to challenge a man unless you expect things to get ugly. That’s football. No fantasies. CTG is a man. I’m glad he didn’t back down, I’m glad no players for either team were involved (no suspensions), and I’m glad everyone will be talking about it for the next two weeks. This team needs to know that they have someone in their corner, no matter what.

Grantham was upset that Rambo was stomped on at the end of the game. Vandy’s coach is a show boat (as evidenced by his two helicopter trips to Gerogi) and he obviously popped off to Grantham. Not smart and after watching it over, I’m glad Grantham said his piece and then removed himself from the situation I’m not mad at him for defending his kids.

Hey “Are you guys stupid” (comment at 12:07 and 12:10) not sure what your agenda is but you clearly did not watch the end of the game. Post game, Franklin bee-lined for Grantham and when he was about 15 yards from him,he was clearly pointing at Shawn Williams for some reason. As he got closer to Grantham he must have made some comment because it set Grantham off – I will take a Coach that takes care of his players any day. This is exactly what Erk and Van Gorder would have done. You can whine and cry that Grantham was out of line but Franklin clearly was going after S. Williams verbally. It would probably be best if you went back to your parents basement and watched some GA Tech – Middle Tenn State game film or some best of “Bob the Builder”.

To clear this up for everyone who is spreading the rumor,

No one “stomped” on Rambo’s leg. He went down with no one around him, apparently due to cramps. What happened with him had NOTHING to do with the Franlin-Grantham showdown.

I don’t know exactly what Coach Grantham was so upset about or what Coach Franklin did or said. It did appear to involve Sean Williams (#36) for UGA and Coach Franklin, based on what was shown on TV. Grantham did overreact, no matter what happened, and no matter how justified he may have been in his anger. He could have made his point, even angrily, without nearly going berserk. His reaction almost caused a riot. Fortunately he was able to be pushed away and the players were restrained.

Regardless of the circumstance, the game was over. Such behavior by any coach or player reflects badly on the University of Georgia. This was not the way to express any grievance concerning the game. There are other channels available to make the point without demonstrating such a lack of class and control. This was a terrible example to set. I am ashamed for the Bulldog Nation. I hope CMR will deal firmly with this bush episode. Is this the kind of discipline we expect or accept from our players and coaches? If so, we will never have a winning program.

The video very plainly shows Grantham walking towards the vandy sideline, as coaches do after games to shake hands with opposing coaches and players. He was to yelling or gesturing in any way. He did not appear to be saying anything. The vandy head C is walking towards Coach G, and from about 20 yards away, he raises his hand and starts yelling at Coach G, pointing and gesturing his finger towards our coach in a very animated manner. Only then did Coach G become angry. Chip, if you had any integrity, you would have reported this portion of the incident. Coach G reacted in defense of his players, and I am glad to see it. However, I agree that our coach should not let the players, or the public, see him lose his cool that badly. I suspect that the vandy Head C
intentionally baited Coach C, and got the reaction he wanted.

“smart dawg” . . . . really? is this your attempt at humour. Not sure where the trailer park fits here but whatever makes you feel superior. The “aggressive” acts towards the Vandy player were in fact not anything directed at the Vandy player at all – the Vandy player (to his credit) appeared to be trying to calm the situation between his “Head” coach and Grantham. It appeared Grantham wanted a piece of Franklin for whatever he had said about a UGA player (which again seemed to be S. Williams who Franklin was clearly pointing at). Once again, the bottom line is we in the Dawg Nation always talk about Erk and his Junkyard Defenses – Erk would have ripped Franklin’s head off and handed it to the nice Vandy player. Let’s get over this BS and move on to FL.

Devil's Advocate

Florida can hide legal offenses until they have no choice but to dismiss.
Auburn can buy players.
Tech can call players stupid and yell at them when things don’t go their way.
UGA can have a saint for HC who dismisses players for things that rival schools sweep under the rug and an A-hole for a DC who will show his A on live TV any given Saturday.

I’m happy with all that, now let’s continue to let these rivalries be settled on the field and quit acting like our opinions mean anything.

DawgGonHappy

UGA’s just upset as they narrowly won to a team they considered to be an easy win (especially when you consider Vandy’s past record over the last few years). Yes – UGA didn’t play well and Vandy could have won tonight – they had three chances towards the end of the 4th but GA put an end to that.
But Grantham’s behaviour was an embarrassment regardless – I do think he was to blame and watching UGA get booed of the field was deserved.

It looked to me like the Vanderbilt player said something to Grantham , first which got a response from Grantham.
The entire incident was instigated and caused by Franklin. He already said that he had a few things to get off his chest and was looking for CMR but found Grantham. Knowing that Grantham is a very emotional person that was the wrong thing to do. If Franklin had a problem he should have kept it to himself until he found Richt or got in touch with Richt later. If he has a complaint he should contact the SEC but he shouldn’t take it out on Grantham.
Grantham is what I call an Alpha .He is aggressive and coaches with emotion. I will not cut down a man that only was taking up for his players and I applaud him for acting like a real man and not taking any crap from a classless Franklin.Could Grantham have handled it a little better. Probably but I don’t know exactly what Franklin said to set Grantham off so maybe it was the best response but I NO WAY IN HELL WILL CONDEMN OR CHASTISE GRANTHAM FOR WHAT HE DID. CMR had just barely gotten me off the “he needs to be fired” band wagon and then he doesn’t back his DC. I now say CMR needs to go. I don’t care what the DC did; the head coach backs him in public. He may chew him out behind closed doors, but he backs him in public. If CMR had even middle management skills, he would know that the players HAVE to feel the coaches have their back. Why the heck does he think Bobby Cox was so popular and a Hall of Fame manager? On top of everything else, CMR showed a total lack of class.
I again state that CMR doesn’t have the brains or management skills to run a major college football program. For example, do we have to lose a game before our head coach figures out that we need a dedicated coach in charge of special teams? Our special teams are horrible. The worst part is there isn’t a coach trying to fix this area. We just continue to look like a clown act on special teams.

Anytime you have an emotional confrontation-no matter how it turned out-it could always have been handled better. The video only shows Grantham and not Franklin’s face. Guaranteed he didn’t look very composed either. Grantham is a fiery guy…that’s why he coaches defense. Vandy was doing some stuff in the trenches on Jenkins and Geathers. It was evident in that abortion of a call where the Vandy guy clipped Geathers and he rolled over and punched the dude. The TV guys thought it was offsetting fouls. That’s how obvious it was. Instead it was a 15 yard personal foul on UGA.
How come no one noticed the Vandy guy spearing Bennett while driving him out of bounds? It was intentional. All he needed to do was push him out. Instead he put his head down and put the crown of his helmet right in the small of Bennett’s back. UGA does that and it’s a personal foul and possibly an ejection.
The Dawgs played poorly and Vandy played the game of their lives. And despite it all the Dawgs won. It doesn’t matter if you win by 1 or 100. It’s a W. I just hope that they get some stuff ironed out in the bye week and come out with some more polish against the Gators.

Ole Miss we beat by 2 TDs, Alabama beat by 6 and a half TDs; and the vols who we beat by 1 TD, LSU beat by 4 and a half TDs. Speaking of chop blocks & NCAA PROBATION back-to-back in FOOTBALL, Virginia – who has not beat anyone all season – still has not beat anyone; but Georgia tek will be hard not to fall all the way out of the Top 25, leaving Auburn as the only remaining team on our schedule who is still today ranked. But, with Auburn playing LSU next and Alabama in the last game, has no hope of ending the season ranked either. With the sorry play of South Carolina tonight, there is little doubt that we should NEVER have lost to South Carolina. Who has South Carolina beat ? That’s right; no one – nor do they play anyone all season long either. I still say Spencer Ware is the most impressive football player, a sophomore, in The SEC, as he alone should be plenty enough to dispatch Auburn from the Top 25 this coming Saturday. # 21 Texas, # 10 Michigan (Hogwash # 10 yeah right the rank you have at GAME TIME is the ONLY ranking that matters.), # 15 Illinois and # 24 Baylor (Hogwash # 24) all went down along with # 12 Georgia tek – ha ha ha to lowly Virginia who still has not beat anyone this season. The ones to note are # 24 Baylor and # 21 Texas and us 4 back after 5 straight wins to make it into the Top 25; after of course we did not end up ranked 2009, were not ranked for 2010 and remain not ranked 2011. Beating Florida will not move us into the rankings either, not with their 4-3 record for Florida having beat no one, like us – and, like Georgia tek.

No one on our schedule has beat 1 single good team. Not 1. (Yes, that includes the 2 teams who beat us, who are therefore on our schedule – for they too have beat no one.)

Nice Job again on that AJ-C. What’s the deal ? Every week; it’s the same ole thing. Look nitwits, this is Atlanta Georgia, where Georgia Bulldogs DOMINATE your poor readership by 10 to 1 over Georgia tek. Saturday is college football.

This is a college football town. The Sunday paper you sell for Three (3) Dollars. There are 8 million Georgians and 6 million Atlantans and we are college football fans. We are fans of The University of Georgia.

Do you care ? No. We buy your papers. We deserve a newspaper in this town who will actually cater to we Bulldogs. You cannot go to press EVERY WEEK without the bloody box score from our games and put them in the weekday paper and get away with it. Can I go find the box score at 10:45 last night, online. Sure I can. I can also buy a different newspaper, if you don’t drop your prices to 10 cents to run them off, again. And, then back to full price after you have – which is exactly what you did to give us these “sportswriters” the lot of them, no good.

Any ref will tell you he can call a penalty every play. CMR needs to go to the commissioner and at least plead his case so that incompetent or homer refs can’t get away with that bs. How many Dawg fan’s think Ga can look forward to now not only getting helmets first hits in the back but also cheap cut and chop blocks on out d-lineman and LB’s from the dirty cheating Auburn Tigers this year.

I hope the SEC officials start doing their jobs and monitor these cheap blocks. They also missed a few Nick Farley style helmet first hits by the Dore’s last night.

It was dirty and cheap of Vandy but it did work to slow down out fast LB’s. The dirtiest team in all of CFB will certinly follow suit.

I don’t see how anybody who actually watched this game thought this was a good win…what are you smoking?? We played down to the level of competition, we had most of our starters, and the “we were tired and banged up after playing for weeks without a bye” doesn’t cut it. It’s not like it was a Thurs night game after a Sat game, every team has to play those kinds of stretches. Our offense is disjointed and our defense let VANDY run up the middle on them. We’ll be lucky to be 8-4 which is exactly what our former coach Jim Donnan was good at before he got fired. This is not a player failure people, this is a coaching failure, a discipline failure, it’s an embarrassment that we can’t even win badly with class. FIRE MARK RICHT and TODD GRANTHAM and MIKE BOBO and find someone like Kirby Smart that’s been an assistant to somebody who knows how to get discipline and execution out of his players. Some of you people on this blog are just impossible to please. You complain when UGA supposedly isn’t spirited enough. You complain that CMR and the other coaches lack passion. You saw passion last night and a fiery spirit at the end of the game. Vanderbilt did get away with a few clips last night. In fact, on one penalty the announcer called the clip that the ref ignored and there were a lot of questionable chop blocks as well. Franklin, was just trying to fire up his troops, by saying what he did. He has to try and do something. They came up short in a game they tried very hard to win.
The win wasn’t pretty but it is a W, keeps us on pace for the SEC East and a true fan will realize the value of the “W”. Now the young men can take the week off, recover and heal and get ready for Florida. UGA has the tools and athletes to win that game so it is nice to get a week off from a game, and plan out a good game. Any true DAWG fan should be proud of these young folks, even though, last night was not a stellar performance. IT is a SEC win, keeps them in the hunt and shows that they can still win even if they weren’t burning on all 8 cylinders last night.

However, this UGA team is walking a fine line between winning, and total disaster. How the WHOLE team, except Butler, can contribute to almost getting beat by VANDY baffles me. Apparently some fans are deluding themselves into thinking our team is something it is not. Our special teams are putrid, arguably much worse than they were last year. Blair Walsh looks like he’s been spooked by the Blair Witch…God help us if the game is on the line and he’s kicking, what is he 50/50 on kicks this year?? Grantham said a few choice words that he would want to take back, but he was standing up for and protecting his players.

This game almost got out of hand (fighting) for the same reason the Auburn game got out of hand. Players don’t like getting hit in the back and ribs with illegal helmet first hits and getting their lower legs blocked on every few plays. These SEC refs did not do their job and protect his players, so, Grantham gave the Vandy coach a piece of his mind. Any good coach who cares for his players would.

I see the Second Coming of Herschel benched for “non-injury related purposes”. Oh well, he has more time to braid his hair and work on his chest beating gestures after his runs.

I see my Head Coach lament the lack of discipline. Well, if it ain’t the job of the Head Coach, then who is running the show? The ‘playas’?

As for the Dawg fans who look past their typical 3 personal foul penalties and claim that Vandy was chop blocking, it’s funny that when Alabama beat Vandy 34-0 last week there wasn’t a word said by Alabama coaches or players afterwards about Vandy chop blocking. Richt said nothing about chop blocking either. Looks like Grantham has another reprimand coming.

Trupert, you are the special moron that looks at numbers in isolation without out qualifying/validating them. Those stats you hail for our D come against the likes of Mississippi (which was decimated by Alabama), Missippi State (which was beaten soundly by LSU), and a Tennessee team that couldn’t run against a nursing home staff. In addition to Tenn and Missippi St., LSU’s defense has held down a veteran and polished Oregon attack with all their players fresh and prepared, West Virginia and Florida was held to 11 points. There’s absolutely no comparison. South Carolina has struggled against decent defenses as evidenced by their games against Auburn and Miss St, so that performance by our D is looking less and less stellar.

John D, while all your points are valid, calling Auburn a decent defense might be a bit of a stretch. They were rated as one of the worst defenses in the country before shutting down South Carolina thanks largely to QB Stephen Garcia, who apparently spent more time drinking and smoking pot than he did preparing to play football. Prior to that game the Auburn fans were howling for Chizik to fire defensive coordinator Ted Roof. And yes, Auburn shut Florida down last night, but Florida had been beaten to a pulp by Alabama and LSU in the 2 previous games and was without starting QB John Brantley and all purpose threat Jeff Demps. Auburn has already given up over 30 points 4 times this season.

Well just to remind you experts, the putrid Auburn defense has held two the East powers to a total of 19 points. UGA has beaten 4 SEC teams that have a total of one victory in the conference. Come play in the West where the big boys play. You boys are laughable.,

hornblower……”semi-legal” chop blocks? Thats like being a little pregnant. One offensive player CAN’T chop block. It is impossible by rule. The defensive player “must be otherwise engaged”. When that happens it is one of the easiest fouls to call because it is so obvious to the umpire and head linesman. Chop blocks are dangerous and my guess they are caught by college officials 95% of the time. It has been a point of emphasis now for a few years. Can’t imagine any college coach would teach a chop block as part of his fundementals. If he did his players would not buy into it. They know it can be dangerous. Chop blocks are very rare and thank god for that!

Vandy is a well prepared team. They looked like Colorado last year and the game last night gave me that same feeling that we were not mentally in the game and that we would hang on then ……………..boom, the punt was blocked and Butler saved the night.

CMR would have lost his job on the plane that night, had UGA lost the game.

Prepare for Florida.

IC, according to CMR on his post game radio show said that IC had broken some team rule or rules. I hope taat IC is not developing into another Washed Up Ealey. In the UT game, I did not like what I saw with him taking himself out of the game.

I do not think very well from what your team has demonstrated so far this season. You guys are not conditioned and not disciplined, both a recipe for a losing program. It takes 2 or more offensive players to commit a chop block infraction. Clipping is dangerous also. You don’t see clipping fouls committed very often. Thinking more about the Geathers play, I would call it a late hit.

Ga football is certainly interesting though not entertaining and not very sportsmanlike anymore. It is sad to watch under-achievement along with over-payment to coaches who seem to coach down the talent. Heck, even Walsh is going backward. My guess is that someone gave him an idea of how to kick better and we are now seeing the results of it. Murray is losing it too….shoot, I reckon Crowell won’t be worth a dern by late next season…..and it looks like he has already begun the off-field messing around………….This whole program needs fixing. I say hire a HC who can win with 3 star talent by coaching them up. Talent that actually has an iq above their shoe size, a life plan that includes graduating from college. Talent that has respect for UGA and won’t risk ending up in jail due to stupid stuff. I’m a fan of UGA sports but not of this present program.

Everyone questioning Kwame Geathers….he threw that little love tap because he was CHOP BLOCKED FROM BEHIND AFTER THE PLAY WAS OVER!!!

The FACT is that VANDY was throwing chop block after chop block, holding, and in one case an actual kick of a Georgia player occured during an unpiling after a play

All of that AND the fact that the REFS were NOT calling anything against Vandy to get control of it, is why Richt, Grantham and the Players were so upset causing it to boil over at the end

And anyone who watched the end should have clearly seen that Vandy’s Coach came across the field running his mouth and gesturing and Grantham was shocked, turned around to see who/what he was yelling about and then went nuts when he realized that Vandy’s coach was going after one of his player after Vandy’s players were so DIRTY all night

The fact of the matter is the Vandy coach was calling out Shawn Williams 36 for personal fouls after Vandy players were taking cheap shots at Georgia players knees around the piles. This was clearly an organized thing to hurt UGA players,it actually started early in the game.Geathers got the worst cheap shot and retaliated drawing a flag. When Geathers got to his feet a Vandy player hit him in the back of the knee after the play. Vanderbilt has been a cheapshot team for years. Geathers was understandably irate at a cut block that could have trashed his knees for good, and was typical of Vanderbilt’s play the entire game. No excuse offered, just that retaliating to a dirty play isn’t that difficult to understand. Anyway, Vandy has been practicing that sort of illegal blocking for several seasons, and it’s totally not surprising.

Well, all you geniuses who have such a love fetish for Richt and Bobo- How did you like them apples?

A famous person once said that sheep will mill around aimlessly until the shepard leads them. These talented UGA players were let down in spades last night by Marjoe Richt and Bobo. Anyone who denies that needs immediate psychological help.

How long must this BS go on? We’re paying the two of them $4M a year when there is 20% unemployment in the country. That’s unearned income as far as I’m concerned. The State of Georgia is getting ripped off.

And watch this prediction: Grantham is the only one of the senior coaches who displays any passion, spitit, emotion whatsoever. The players feed off this. I don’t know about you, but I am not upset that Grantham exchanged words with the Vandy coaches at the end of the game. But watch this–Richt will reprimand him like he did last year. This is poisonous for the team.

And what’s with them playing number 36 all night after he received not one, but two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties that I must say were well deserved? Is this what Righteous good Christian coaches do? No, he should have been benched after the first one and sent to the locker room after the second one.

We were lucky to get out of Nashville with a win last night. Not because of the players, but because of Richt and Bobo. Wake up!

More embarrassing by his defense getting slapped around the field by VANDY, a team who had like 36 rushing yds against Bama and 4 yards against SC????

Obviously the fantasy of the great DC and the improvement of his defense is that they were playing the Coastals of the world. Everytime he plays a above bad team he gets slapped around like a doll and ends up embarrassing UGA by some juvenile stunt in front of the cameras.

So you’re chop blocked, it’s part of the game just like crotch grabbing when your in a pile or the occasional elbow get over it and grow a pair. The fact they respond is a testament to the lack of coaching, fundamentals and discipline which we haven’t seen in this program in years. Do you think Saban would put up with that crap, say what you will about his morality; but, football is a business plain and simple and he would bench their A$$!!!

Apparently Ga was being a little too rough as usual, considering they lead the SEC in Personal Fouls. The Vandy coach was trying to find Richt but when that didn’t happen he found Grantham instead. If the Vandy coach was yelling at a player then it was one of the players that were taking dirty shots all night, as once again they were rampant throughout the game from Ga. Even in the post game interview Grantham was asked about the personal fouls and he said that although you don’t want penalties, Ga is going to stay agressive but I don’t really talk to the players about being too aggressive(douche alert!). It would have been funny if the Vandy coach would have punched Grantham in the face!

I too see this game as an abberation. While watching the game, I got the opinion that the focus was not totally on Vandy during the week of practice. Makes you wonder if they got an early jump on prepping for Jax. At least they played that way. But I am not any more concerned by the performance.

Secondary was great all night. Run defense….WHAT run defense??? UGA’s matador “D” – here comes the RB….OLE’!! Here he omes again….OLE”!!! what, you mean we have to TACKLE him???? – is infuriating to watch. That we couldn’t put Vandy away is inexcusable,The Dogs should have laid a beatdown on the Commodores, but instead we made them look like defending SEC champions. Glad to see Walsh hitting the target again, especially after his first kick hit the upright. But to have to count on a bunch of FGs every game to stay in it is indicative of a far bigger problem on offense.

I think this may be the last year for Ricth or at least his offensive and defensive co-ordinators. Both defense and offense played awful. Flowery Branch probably has better of both. The offense couldn’t open a hole with a bulldoz And our cornerbacks and safeties were absent from the field and the defense had no answer for the run. No blitzes!! I was ashamed to be a Ga. fan for the first time in a long time. Aaron Murray?? What can I say. Overthrown passes to wide open receivers all game long. He is just not a good player in my opinion And talk about predictable, I could call the defenses for the other teams. Up the middle, up the middle, throw a 30 yard pass on 3rd down when you only need 6 yards. Give me a break Ricth and retire. The next few games are going to be worse and Ga. will lose all but one. I think I’ll pull for Alabame. :-)

Dangerous Vanderbilt team awaits Bulldogs in Nashville
The bottom line is, we won even if it wasn’t pretty. Vandy is a team who has always been a pain in the side of SEC teams, but seemed to fall short in the ability to win close games. What I heard in Coach Franklin’s post game interview was pretty muct he was trying to build a team who was not content with being the doormat of the SEC. Isn’t this the very thing all the Georgia fans are screeming for now? He and his staff do not get the 3, 4, & 5 star players like Georgia, Florida, and Alabama do, nor does the money roll in to support the program. But yet they take the left-over players and give some pretty big boys in the SEC a run for theit money right down to the wire. The way they ran the ball on us shows we have a lot of work to do before we can think about stopping Tech. All this talk about Georgia winning the east hinges on South Carolina getting beat and us winning out. Right now can anyone say that’s a sure bet? We can say what we want but the facts are, our coaching staff “is what it is” and we are going to live with it until either coach Richt makes a change, or his bosses make a change. I will have to say it was good to see that Tarvas King really can catch a ball. I would have to also ask why Bogata is not being used on kickoffs? To have a kickoff ran back 96 yards when we have players who can kick the ball out of the end zone could speak to the fact that we play not to lose rather than play to win. Overall this was a well rounded game of Good, Bad, and Ulgy. Now get ready to turn the table on the annual beatdown by the Florida Gators!!!!!

There’s a difference between chop blocks and cut blocks. Chop blocks are penalties. Cut blocks are legal. I think there’s a lot interchangeability being used in this blog. There were a lot of cut blocks in that game and it wasn’t just Vandy doing that.

I, for one, will not be seen in public wearing University of Georgia gear while this coaching staff remains in control of the UGA football program.

I consider myself a DGD, and I can deal with the losses and keep pulling for my team. I can’t, however, allow my good name to be associated with a football program that has no class. The red bloomer DUI incident last year (among others) have been embarrassments, but the behavior of our coaching staff last night was the straw that broke the camel’s back for me.

If this is Georgia Football©, then I don’t want to be a part of it any longer.

One Uga player reminded me more of a Pro Wrestler or Nick Fairley that I every wanted. And Yes, I was there. I traveled to Nashville, TN to watch that game. The worse part of it was….. Bobo needed to stay in Nashville!! Richt needs to make a change!!!!! Or as much as I don’t want to see it…. He needs to go. You know what folks, I hate to make this point but it’s true….. What a load of horse manure. The SEC should suspend any coach that nearly causes a brawl after a game. This is not the WWF, it is college football.
Shut the program down or suspend the assistant coach.
A coach is to teach sportsmanship, not mindless violence.

If we’re going to settle for what Mark Richt has done to the once proud Georgia football program, then we should just go ahead and petition the ACC to accept us into their conference. We’re now a much better cultural fit there than in the SEC. Besides, its easier to win in the ACC.

Rogie……finally someone understands the difference between the legal cut block and the illegal chop block. Many, many college football teams teach the cut block. The defense hates it for a couple reason; it hurts only the ego’s of the defensive player. Defensive players hate to be on the ground and chasing the play from behind. It is hard to stop the run game if you are trying to tackle running backs from the grass and dirt! Chop blocks are most always a mistake by the 2nd and/or 3rd offensive player involved “with an engaged defensive player”. Erk Russell taught the cut block. And no good Dawg would ever say anything negative about this beloved coach!

Vandy did not play well for portions of the game but managed to almost pull out the upset. I thought that the Vandy coach showed the kind of emotion that I want from a coach trying to turn his program around. Dear rational,…I imagine if Chizik had pointed his finger at one of the Florida players and started yelling at him, as Franklin did to Shawn Williams, Muschamp would’ve gone after Chizik. Chizik didn’t do that, so your point is, well, pointless.
Another question, with the game on the line and needing a first down to drain the clock, and Crowell on the bench, why let Samuel try to get outside, and not once but several times? At 240 pounds, he’s more effective up the middle, as the third and long play proved. He picked up five yards. Had that play been tried on first and second, maybe we get the first down and the blocked punt never happens. I sometime think Bobo outthinks himself. Eventually, you’d think he’d learn this and stop doing it. I just think he’s not very……aware of things sometimes. Why else would Carlton Thomas be called on to run between the tackles so often? He’s 175 pounds! Why else would our tight ends not have 10-15 balls thrown their way every game? They are both going to play in the NFL! Get them the ball!!! Why else would John Jenkins, given jersey #6 so he could be a short yardage back, not be given the chance to get short yardage, or at least why not let our 275 pound fullback not carry the ball on short yardage plays?!!! No creativity, no imagination and too many field goals because of it…..or attempted field goals, given Walsh’s inaccuracy. Where is Bogatay? That’s another story.

Lots of crazy stuff at the game. Lots of confusion about what to do and when to do it. Was it lack of preparation or just the status quo of a team that lacks competent coaching. Obviously one’s view of the flair up at the end is tainted by one’s biases. However, I can say that Geathers has never done anything like that before. It is clear that he was the victim of a cheap shot from behind by the Vandy player. Whether the cheap shot was intentional or not is known only to the player who delivered it. Nonetheless, it was a cheap shot and it was not the first one delivered during the game. Geathers’ reaction is unacceptable but understandable.

As to the charge of “cut-blocking’” anyone watching the game saw it going on all night. However, it is not necessarily illegal. Tech teaches cut-blocking as do all option teams. Vandy, while not being an option team, also apparently teaches that technique as well. While it does expose defensive players, especially defensive linemen, to an increased chance of being injured. it is generally legal. I suspect Grantham didn’t like the idea of a non-option team cut-blocking. It is a matter that needs to be looked at by those that make the rules.

Hey Doc Dawg, heal thyself…and while you’re at it, STFU…

Suppose the events that resulted in the ‘dust-up’ at the end of last night’s game, will be vetted and dealt with…and suppose that the Richt/Bobo haters will have something more to criticize them about, regardless of how it is, finally ‘resolved’. The thing that I believe we witnessed in that game is Vandy was committed to ‘baiting’ Georgia with mouthin’-off and cheap shots in the belief that we would react as we did and it cost us…almost all of it. There’s a line – and not a particularly fine one – between standing up for yourself and your players and over-reacting in the wrong way at the wrong time. If the Vandy coach was jawin’ at one of Grantham’s guys then he, Grantham, had every right to challenge him…just not the way he did it. The guy loses his cool when he should ‘manage’ the situation rather than making it worse. I mean all you’ve got to do is recall last year’s UF game with the ’slash’ sign to the Florida kicker…and don’t try to tell us that Erk would have done the same thing, even if you have ‘forgotten’ it…to appreciate that he needs to ‘maintain’ himself.

We came close to blowin’ it last night…just as SC almost ‘blew’ it in Starkville…and Tech did ‘blow’ it in Virginia…these games happen, but to ‘go off’ on Mark Richt and Bobo (in case you didn’t realize it, Vandy’s got a pretty good defense) for a game we won, in a place where we’ve had trouble – at night in Nashville – before, sucks, big time.

And while I’m at it, the Vandy coach had better check what he calls ‘coaching, and playing and recruiting, with class’ cause the jury’s still out on ‘em.

A Georgia fan who said he was at the game posted earlier that Shawn Williams was standing near the Vandy sideline late in the game taunting them. Grantham is going to go Woody Hayes on a player one day… but you gaggers will say he was just sticking up for is players. You Uga fans who support his behavior, aren’t bothered by the multiple player run-ins with the law under CMR are an embarrassment to the state. Win at all costs and you still get 6-7. This year you might finish 8-4. Go You Hairy Postmen!

The so called fans on this blog who say” wish he would have punched Franklin”, “retaliating for chop blocks”, “grantham was defending his players” are all excuses and show your immaturity.
Any coach at any school who promotes a physial altercation and draws ill afforded negative critisim for the second time in a year does not belong in collegiate athletics. Grantham is promoting his players to react negatively and that folks is not what winning programs do.
We have received enough negative reporting for the past 3 plus years and TG is not helping us with his behavior.

I would imagine Grantham was embarrassed at his team’s performance (as he should have been), which caused his childish temper tantrum. He needs to grow up, stop making excuses, and set an admirable example for the young men he leads. It is laughable that a UGA coach can’t contain himself at a Vanderbilt game.

Lose vs loose

This confusion can easily be avoided if you pronounce the word intended aloud. If it has a voiced Z sound, then it’s “lose.” If it has a hissy S sound, then it’s “loose.” Here are examples of correct usage: “He tends to lose his keys.” “She lets her dog run loose.” Note that when “lose” turns into “losing” it loses its “E.”

Get it? Got it? Good!

This game had the dumbest call I have seen in my 50 years of going to the dawgs . We were at the game and I was stunned that the dogs just didn’t snap the ball and either take a knee or run around. It was 4th down with 15 seconds on the clock and Vandy did not have a timeout. Snap the ball and the game is over. Instead they were going to kick and give Vandy and chance to run it back and win? Worse, give them an opportunity to block the punt? No way. Richt is too smart for that – right? Wrong. We were lucky that Vandy could not get a handle on the blocked punt or else they would have won. Also that first pass hit the receiver in the hands and we could have lost it there. How could Richt have been so out of it is beyond me.

UMMM I do believe several points were put on the board because of special teams once again and not the D.
There was a kickoff return for a TD.
A fake punt that ended up in a TD
and a blocked punt that almost sunk us.
take away those 14 points and once again the D held an opponent to 14 points and that is not bad.

what gets me is how many times our D can get caught napping on fake punts. That just amazes me. The first responsibility for the D line is to stay home. Make sure the punt is done and then run to block.
Why else do you see these punters stand back there so long and do these run for a second and then kick. if the D front was attacking like they are supposed to then this would not be an issue.

To All UGA Fans: Unfortunately for Mark Richt, I am convinced that it is time for a change. Our offense is very predictable, our defense has improved but we still have not played anybody and won. I would like to keep TG and bring in the guy from Texas Tech that got fired. We need to modernize our offense, and I don’t think BOBO can get er done. Also, Granthan should have slapped the s%@# out of that Franklin guy, as he came running toward him raising cain. Also, when your offense fails to 6 times to put TD’s on the board that is just terrible. I thought we had improved, but look what ALABAMA did to OM yesterday and that tells you how far behind we are. Top 5 recruiting year after year and we can even break into the top 25, because we are not well coached. We need a coach like the guy from Boise ST or Auburn. As bad as I hate to say this: you can take this to the bank, we will not beat Auburn and I doubt we will beat FLA. We need a new culture to take over, as we are in the same predicament as when Donnan took over for Golf. The program is going in the wrong direction and it is time for a change!!!!!!

That explanation MAY have alot of emotion wrapped up in it. No reason to make a hasty decision you may have to back away from later when the full story comes out. Love Grantham`s fire but he needs to do things without becoming the center of the firestorm. You don`t always have to sink to the lowest common denominator to make your point. Love the defense the Dawgs are bringing right now. The O line is starting to control more of the line of scrimmage. Goods things ahead.

“personal fouls on Georgia and the punch thrown by Geathers.”

Shhh, but you see those were all result of unseen penalties and dirty play by VANDY. Of course the only people to see those “dirty” plays were the delusional UGA fans who were looking for a reason why VANDY was dragging the idiot DC’s defense up and down the field. This was a Vandy team which had 36 yds rushing against Bama and less than a 100 yds total as SC.

Well for small miracles that at least the Special teams coach taught at least the punter how to make one tackle or UGA would be witnessing one of the worst meltdowns of a fanbase in history.

Perhaps the DC should take less time embarrassing the University, causing on field riots and taunting other teams placekickers, and MORE TIME coaching his defense how to tackle and cover.

I am a Georgia fan. But I must admit that I find the behavior and the product on the field of this team in about the same manner as Red Sox fans are joking about Colonel Sanders being the team’s strength and conditioning coach. While Alabama under Saban beats Vandy 34-0 last week and it seemed like a humanitarian act, Georgia gets lots of penalties and wins a really close game that went down to the last play. The same with LSU and their team looking so disciplined and ready to play a road game against Tennessee. They look like pros, unaffected by the crowd and had their “eyes on the prize.” Georgia looks like the inmates running the asylum. There are so many coaches that deserve a chance to coach this team. I hear that the New Yorkers are not satisfied with Brian Schottenheimer. Time to open the wallet and hire a top flight coach.

First he gives a rival player a “choke” sign and then he gets in a war of words with the Vandy coach. And no I wasn’t there and don’t know what happened. He went the extra mile to put it in terms a 5th grader could understand but apparently your “comprehensive capabilities” are near the bottom. Go back and slowly read the article(or have someone read it to you) and listen to how CMR explains what he meant. Apparently we are dealing with a double(not a compliment) digit IQ here.

I think Grantham was a bit embarrassed that his defense was punched in those nose last night by the likes of Vanderbilt. He has had tough sledding at uga – from last seasons debacle – to getting pasted by Boise State in a game he had 9 months to prepare his “dream team” for. Now, the conference lightweight, with all due respect to Vandy, the SEC perennial doormat lights them up.

Guys, quit wasting your breath on this blog… it’s VANDERBILT. They are pathetic, smarmy, arrogant, cut-blocking, cheap-shot little pukes who don’t deserve to even be in the SEC. They took cheap shots all night, held and cut blocked, and took a few late hits that weren’t called. Rambo was also hurt after the game, possibly from a hit from a Vandy player, and Grantham was just sticking up for his guys after an emotional game. Vandy should have just kept its collective mouth closed and trudged to the locker room after ANOTHER loss.

How does it feel, Commies, to know you will NEVER win the SEC? And the only way you can compete with athletes like Georgia had is to cut block, clip, and hit after the whistle? This Franklin guy seems to want to build a “new culture” up there, but it’s the same Vandy club that will be 4-8 every year, maybe 6-6 if they are lucky sometimes, and more often than not, get beat like a drum.

Again, let’s close this blog, guys… save your breath. That pathetic bunch from Nashville isn’t worth the space or the effort. Let’s rest, relax, recharge, and get ready for Florida… GO DAWGS!

Jeff………I may have been to harsh on you? You may be referring to the illegal chop block. Those rule violations are very rare. They are also very easy to see by the umpire and linesmen. A single offensive lineman can’t committ a chop block violation. It takes 2 or more offensive players to commit this foul .Seeing a ” previous engaged defensive player” is so obvious that it is rarely missed by game officials.

Paddy I was a high school coach in Georgia and Texas for 23 years and a cut block is legal but vandy was also cut blocking UGA def lineman when they were already engaged-especially Geathers and Jenkins on more than a few times. This was clearly coached and taught and intended to ruin the career of these 2 great young men. While I dont agree with Coach Granthem I do understand it.It is taboo to call out a player on another team as the vandy coach did to Shawn Williams 36.This is a coach who fights for his players and players love to play for these type of coache,If I was Coach Richt I would send the film to SEC offices for review. This was a intentional act to hurt these def lineman who they could not block otherwise.

The athletic history of UGA is full of so many sordid, sleazy incidents – dating back to Vince Dooley and continuing through Mark Richt – that it’s impossible to overlook. The school has come to stand for drunkenness and lawlessness, coddling of illiterate athletes who should never have been admitted to college, and rampant cheating by coaches. “Sportsmanship is for losers and communists.”

This kind of attitude is why UGA is known around the world as The Cesspool of the South.

hahahahahahahaha another jealous nerd. When ur getting chop blocked sportsmanship goes out the window. For trying to take our linesmans knees out, Geathers should have ripped that guys helmet off and then broke his fricken nose.

This is why no chicks should EVER comment on football. Football is a brutal sport and if you cant take it then STFU moron.

Grantham just solidified himself in the bulldog nations hearts on saturday. Even if Richt ends up getting canned (which he shouldnt) CTG will stay. But if Richt goes so does all of our recruits. You people who are calling for him to be fired do know that rigth??

In years past every got onto richt due to all the off the field issues and he corrected that by putting in extreme policies to curb it. But now that same group is angry at him again for it???? What do you want people??? Give the man a chance to find a balance between the 2. He has the team under control (Washington’s DUI not his fault, Geathers punching the lineman not his fault).

Maybe if all the armchair QB’s would just STFU about it we wouldnt be losing recruits, maybe the players and coaches could actually get comfortable for a week without all this idiotic “Hot Seat” crap. The only coahc on the “Hot Seat” is Bobo.Yes Richt should back up his players and his coaches with stuff like this, but he is also not the kind of guy who will publically sound like an idiot by saying, “Nope my players told me what happeneed and they are right its all on Vandy.” How dumb and ignorant would that have made him sound?? He did the same thing with CTG vs Florida. Publically didnt outright back him, but most likely didnt care when the cameras werent around.

Now stop spreading crap and get behind the team. However its hard for a lot of folks are here, but that is why they are the fringe fans and only care when we are doing good, and love to voice the retard opinions when we are down. And now even the coaches are t-h-u-g-s.

UGA and Mark Richt are an affront and an embarrassment to all decent people in this state.

Wow you changed up you little statement. Way to add and coaches this time!!

CTG is right in his outrage.
CMR needs to load up the video of examples and send it to the SEC office and make an issue out of this. NO APOLOGY TOUR!

Geathers had every right to punch that gutless Vandy player that hit him on his knee from behind after the play was over. The vandy player may not have a future in football, but that’s no excuse for trying to end Geathers season/career.

That kind of stuff happened the entire game. It was almost as if they were instructed to do this to either show us that they weren’t going to back down, or that they were trying to get us off our game (which definitely worked).

Can only surmise the Bulldog Nation came to the defense of Todd Grantham over the baldheaded liar from Tennessee and a gutless head coach who threw one of his coaches under the bus then proceeded to drive over him. Twice! Since traitorous coward Saint Mark Wretch is in such an apologetic mood perhaps he should start with the long suffering UGA football fans. The brainless coach should apologize to fans for allowing a punt to be blocked in the final 15 seconds, allowing another successful fake punt, allowing a kickoff return for a TD, continuing to attempt FGs which are missed instead of going for TDs, failing to take up for his players, failing to take up for his coaches except Mike Dodo, assuming his own coach to be at fault without even hearing his side of the story and for allowing the football program to drop into the lower region of SEC. How about it Saint? No apology will be forthcoming. Why? Because Wretch is not only the poorest head coach in the SEC but a hypocrite to boot. If Grantham walked tonight I would not blame him. I have to agree with the previous post. Coach Richt is letting his sweet kind personality get in the way of coaching football. Just watching Georgia play ball shows how undisiplined they are. They are not a well coached team. Example: watch Alabama play. They look like a machine with all parts knowing what the other parts are doing any for sure each player knows what he’s supposed to be doing.
And I do also agree, if Grantham walked today I could not blame him after the spinless way Richt acted. And I do mean spinless. I guess Richt would be crying if he saw all the hateful things said on here.

Bobo has used up his all his ‘get out of jail free’ cards. His play calling has been on the side of idiocy. Changes are a coming.

And lastly, most of you on here are very lucky you said what you’ve said on here and not in Grantham’s face. You folks most probably be smiling with toothless gums till you get to the dentist. Much like the folks from Tenn do.:-)

I have been a Dawg fan since 1966. Unfortunately, since Dooley left we have not had a real coach. I don’t agree with anything Spurrier says, BUT, he is right that all our 4 & 5 star recruits have not played like it. It must be the coaching, what else can it be? Richt is a heck of a good man, but his coaching has fallen way short. That includes his assistant coach selections. We should not be struggling against Vandy, Kentucky, etc. The Vandy incident aside, its time to start over with new coaches from top to bottom. We need someone like Saban, someone who can turn the Dawgs into a machine(Alabama) like someone else alluded to. We need a leader that will “coach them UP” to their fullest potential. There’s nothing wrong with being emotional, nothing wrong with supporting your players. I’m not trying praise Saban but I don’t seem to be hearing these type things happening around him (I’m not saying his players don’t get into trouble, etc). I’m just tired of mediocrity.
