ATHENS – Add another name to the list of football players planning to play basketball at Georgia.

Jay Rome, a freshman tight end from Valdosta, said he recently received the blessing of basketball coach Mark Fox to come out for basketball after the football season in over. Rome will join fellow freshman Nick Marshall on the hardwood.

“I’m not exactly sure when I’ll be able to start working with the team but me and my father talked with Coach Fox a week or so ago and basketball is definitely going to happen,” said Rome, a 6-foot-6, 240-pound forward. “In high school, I always thought basketball was my favorite sport, but I figured I’d have a better chance to play football in college. But over the past month or so, I decided I wanted to play basketball again because I missed it so much.”

Rome was a three-time player of the year at Valdosta, where he averaged 25 points and 12 rebounds his senior season. Rome’s father Stan Rome starred in basketball and football at Clemson in the 1970s. A four-star signee in football, Jay Rome is being redshirted in that sport this season.

“Me and [sophomore forward] Marcus Thornton have become good friends up here,”  said Rome, who expects to play small forward with the Bulldogs. “We talked a lot and hang out a lot and he talked me into coming out.”

Replacing Malcolm Mitchell

Receivers coach Tony Ball said the Bulldogs will miss Malcolm Mitchell’s big-play ability but does not see his absence this week due to a hamstring injury radically altering the receiving corps.

“We’re certainly going to miss an element on offense, but other players have got to step up,” Ball said. “That’s what we expect. I imagine Michael Bennett or Marlon Brown or T.K. [Tavarres King] or Chris Conley will step up. Those guys understand that. They’ve got to make plays.”

Ball said Mitchell, who averages 17.5 yards on 25 receptions, is not necessarily faster than the rest of the receivers. He’s merely opportunistic and determined.

“I think there’s comparable speed. I just think Malcolm has taken advantage of his opportunities. He’s where he’s supposed to be and he’s able to make the play when it comes to him. That’s a big part of it.”

They said it

Quarterback Aaron Murray surrounded by reporters Tuesday at Georgia’s weekly media day and being asked what the Bulldogs needed to do to cut down on turnovers when senior tight end Aron White, who was walking by, decided to chime in.

“Yeah, no interceptions,” White interjected.

Murray deadpanned a response. “Yeah, no holding!”

White’s holding penalty against Tennessee was the first of four in a row by Georgia in the fourth quarter Saturday that led to a second-and-56-yards-to-go.

“Touche’!” replied White as he retreated toward the locker room.

Injury report

Cornerback Branden Smith suffered a slight “stinger” on his flattening hit of Tennessee wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers. But he was able to complete the game and is practicing this week.

“That’s part of football,” Smith told reporters. “All spring, all summer, I tried to be a physical player. Ever since I got up here, everybody said I wasn’t a physical player, so this year I’ve been working on being physical with the receivers and running backs. Hard work is paying off.”

It looks like wide receiver Rantavious Wooten will miss his fourth consecutive game with a concussion he suffered in a car accident last month. The junior once

Etc. . . .

Captains for the Vanderbilt game are center Ben Jones, offensive tackle Cordy Glenn, cornerback Brandon Boykin and special teams player Kosta Vavlas. . . . After facing the league’s top-ranked third-down conversion team in Tennessee (56.3 percent), the Bulldogs will square off versus the SEC’s 12th-ranked team in the category in Vanderbilt (18.5 percent). Georgia is seventh in the conference in third-down conversions at 38.6 percent.

No let downs, boys. Destroy Vandy. Expose them for the weak, barely competitive team that they are. No taking a knee late in the fourth. Shut them out if you can. Score big and often. You must keep the momemtum flowing and the skills sharpened for the schedule ahead.

I have complete faith in you guys. GATA!

We need to beat the truly great teams. We need to have winning record vs teams who finish Top 25. And, we need to put cupcakes away, not lose to them. We also need to quit wasting talent.

Doesn’t matter. After the game the usual suspects will talk about how Vandy stinks and a win over them is insignificant and Georgia still hasn’t beaten anyone and the coaches gotta go and blah, blah, blah.

Nick Marshall is a fine looking young man who has played in every football game. He is smart. He could have been redshirted for how we have wasted him, with his hands not throwing the football to him on offense, especially given that besides Orson Charles and now hamstring Malcolm Mitchell, we don’t have any receivers. I would say that Nick Marshall is the most wasted football player on our roster this season, except for Ray Drew who didn’t get to play at all until Coastal Carolina and then the last 2 cupcakes. We just lack coaching on offense to recognize talent and where they fit in on our team; it has been this way for years and years. Both Nick Marshall and Malcolm Mitchell, both, have the same skill set, are both the same size and should be playing the same position, right now. Will Nick Marshall make it as a defensive back ? Absolutely. We should be throwing to him Saturday, obviously. I still don’t understand how Amarlo Herrera did not start against 2 different teams already this season; what are we thinking when we see these type players ? Being very honest about it, Christian LeMay could not afford to be redshirted this season; and if my job was on the line, I would have played him a few snaps long before now. Hutson Mason has proven with the time we have seen him, that he too, should have had plenty of opportunities to get some snaps against all these 5 cupcakes in a row we have been playing these last 5 weeks now; and instead all he has is Coastal Carolina. Everyone waiting around for The Best Quarterback in The Entire SEC to hit on all cylinders for a whole game; him included, Mark Richt, Mike Bobo and ALL the fans. So, why with 5 cupcakes in a row including now Vandie, has Hutson Mason not been given so much as 1 snap except only Coastal Carolina ?

Jay Rome we haven’t played at all.

Mark Fox will do a far better job of fitting in Jay Rome and Nick Marshall into The Georgia Bulldogs’ Men’s Basketball team than either have been used by the football team’s coaching staff. You watch. Same guys. Same school. Same opponents. Better utilized.

Let the season play out TampaDawg says. For what ? Like Chip Towers says in this blog, there isn’t a team we have played these 5 weeks in a row of cupcakes AND there isn’t one coming up. Chip Towers says Georgia tek is ranked, and if they finish being ranked there is something wrong with the ranking system. In other words, we don’t play anybody this season after our Quarterback GAVE THE GAME AWAY to Stephen Garcia and made Stephen Garcia the better Quarterback than HE that day on the field, head-to-head. Handed them the football game. No way we should have lost to South Carolina. When the game was on the line, Aaron Murray got happy feet and handed the football to South Carolina, again and again and again. He did the same thing to Ole Miss but they were too sorry to take advantage of it. He overthrows wide-open receivers for TD after TD. He flings his little body on the ground afraid to get hit. He averages 1 yards a carry his entire career here and yet all these QB average all so much better every year by direct comparison. Not last year. Both years. All years. He has been here since practice for the bowl game December 2008.

You have picked on me. And, I have addressed the 11 years. It is you who has not, sir.

As for all 11 years, I see you neatly duck the fact that Mark Richt is 3 wins (2001 beat # 4 vols – Lost 4 games ended up # 5 team in The SEC in polls) (2005 beat # 6 LSU – Lost 3 games ended up the # 3 team in The SEC in polls) and (2006, Six (6) Seasons ago beating # 9 Auburn – Lost 4 games ended up # 5 SEC team in polls.) and 10 Losses – EVERY OTHER GAME EVERY OTHER OF ALL 11 YEARS vs teams who finished AP Poll Top 10.

Duck we are 17-26 vs teams who finish AP Poll Top 25 all 11 years.

Have Lost 18 games vs teams who would not have finished in the AP Poll Top 25 without their win over us : CUPCAKES. Teams who had no business beating us all 11 years. You don’t like it. Go read someone else. You have a cursor just like I do.

“Thomas Brown your skewing the facts again .. “Of course, we could still lose to a UNRANKED CUPCAKE like we have done 10 times in 10 previous seasons of Mark Richt. Nice Offense we’ve got.” Most of those losses to bad teams came last year. Not very easy to find cupcake losses under CMR in the first 8 years of his coaching record now is it.”

CUPCAKE LOSSES Mark Richt all 11 years :

10/02/2010 @ Colorado (5-7) L
12/31/2010 vs. Central Florida (11-3) L
09/11/2010 @ *South Carolina (9-5) L
10/30/2010 vs. *Florida (8-5) L
10/03/2009 vs. *Louisiana State (9-4) L
10/10/2009 @ *Tennessee (7-6) L
11/21/2009 vs. *Kentucky (7-6) L
09/05/2009 @ Oklahoma State (9-4) L
11/29/2008 vs. Georgia Tech (9-4) L
09/08/2007 vs. *South Carolina (6-6) L
10/06/2007 @ *Tennessee (10-4) L
10/07/2006 vs. *Tennessee (9-4) L
10/14/2006 vs. *Vanderbilt (4-8) L
11/04/2006 @ *Kentucky (8-5) L
11/01/2003 vs. *Florida (8-5) L
11/02/2002 vs. *Florida (8-5) L
12/28/2001 vs. Boston College (8-4) L
11/10/2001 vs. *Auburn (7-5) L

18 teams who end that season with 5 or more losses, and none of whom would end in the Top 25 without their WINS over Mark Richt that season.

Alec Ogletree. Let’s get this out of the way too. We have nothing but itty-bitty small guys in the entire secondary. We have 1 guy who can defend the forward pass. Alec Ogletree. What do we do ? Like David Pollack, the greatest football player in UGA history to have his hands on the ground, they make him into a LB and he doesn’t know and isn’t trained for that position.
Started Five (5) Games as a Freshman at Strong Safety. Honor Roll student, like myself every single quarter. 4.6 Nike time in 4-yard dash. 6’ 3” by all accounts. Newnan. All America Under Armour. USA Today 1st team All America. Parade All America. AJ-C Super 11. Class AAAAA Player of the Year. All Decade. All State 1st team. No 2 best in entire state, a state which typically finds only 3 other states with more such players who go on to the NFL but which recently nowadays actually finds only 2 other states with more such players. Mark Richt has such a cushy job. Especially when the DISNEYdawgs.com run in here to say how GREAT he has been 2001 through 2011 with an “SEC” chumpionship 2002 when only a 4-Loss Auburn was the only other team ranked in the Coaches’ Poll Top 25 for all of 2002 – Losing to an unranked Florida team whom Mark Richt’s offense went 0-11 against all game (And, not again the post by other bloggers today that Mark Richt averages the # 52 Total Offense all 11 years.) And an “SEC Championship” 2005 when in fact we ended up with 3 Losses and the # 3 ranked team in The SEC in all the polls. Not # 1 best in The SEC 2005, but # 3 best in The SEC. This is what we hand Mark Richt. This is what he has accomplished. And, please quit the whining about 2007 when LSU beat two (2) teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 10 while Mark Richt beat NONE. Mark Richt was NOT hosed by the BCS 2007. Not.
MaxPreps # 2 Safety in the entire nation. ESPN # 4 Safety nationally. Rivals # 3 best Safety in the Unites States of America. Scout.com # 3 Safety in America – the media guide is INCORRECT.
He is good in run support. He is BETTER at Safety than Inside Linebacker. They bulked him up, adding 25 lbs. of weight to remove the 1 best player in our sorry secondary. He also should have been playing wide receiver, obviously with his hands. I watched Fred Biletnikoff live at Fulton County stadium with my season tickets. I know what soft hands look like when I see them. Instead, we trot out these pretenders and wonder why only Malcolm Mitchell besides Orson Charles make the plays. 400 meter, 100 meter, long jump. You did not letter on the track team as I. I played db. I played basketball. I lettered in 4 sports. How many did you letter in ? If you are the WR coach, you are supposed to recognize this, not complain that the guys who have not made the plays, need to step up Saturday.

Right Foot. Have you broken your right foot ? I have. It is 8 weeks. That is AFTER Florida. Can you speed that up ? Sure, with all the facilities, except for an indoor practice field and real basketball gym with 20,000 seats, we could shave maybe 2 of these weeks off. Should we ?

DISNEYdawgs.com have told the poster posting daily that his opinion is that Alec Ogletree should take medical redshirt. Well, he will be here 3 years.

Alec Ogletree did not even play in the 1st game last year. He then did NOT start the 1st seven (7) games on a 6-7 football team which we have to go all the way back to 1953 to find an UGA team who Lost more games. Even I didn’t watch them that year. We started him at WR in game 8. In game 9, back to the bench. Low and Behold in week 10 of a 13-game season (14 games nowadays for the top football programs), Alec Ogletree Started in our lousy horrible secondary.

Good Heavens is all I can say. Game 10 of 13-game season, he gets start at Strong Safety. Look if our coaching staff are all such geniuses, then why have we LOST 10 games vs 13 teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 10 all 11 years ? Why have they Lost 18 games vs teams who without their win over us would NOT have been ranked in the AP Poll Top 25 all 11 years ? Why are they 17-26 vs teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 25 all 11 years. Have I coached ? Yes. Have I played ? A lot more than you have. Were you a walk-on at UGA ? I think not.

29 Scholarships given out for 2011 (and no we do not have a full complement and gave 8 walk-ons just the other day scholarships none of whom have yet to play on offense or defense) and it is not this coaching staff’s fault that they are GONE ? They have NOT WASTED TALENT ? They are Not going to make the wrong decision AGAIN with Alec Ogletree ? Ok, let’s say you’re right and I am wrong, Ok ? Let’s say the 29 we should just say Ok, Good Riddance to. Bad choices by the coaching staff, right ? Right or Wrong ? Bad Choices ? That’s what you said. If so, then what’s to say MORE will not be the same ? Albert Einstein.
Play the season out and then complain. You said that last year.

And, the year before.
And, the year before that.
And, the year before that.
Have I gotten to Seven (7) seasons yet.
The ones before THAT TOO until 7 seasons ago. And, what was it we did Seven (7) seasons ago ? Lost 3 games, ended up # 3 team in The SEC in every poll. I actually thought we did well that year. I actually consider 2005 our best season. Let’s look at it, shall we ? Florida a lousy stinking Florida team beat us when this great and wondrous coaching staff told us all how great Joe Tereshinski III is at QB. Remember ? They saw the same game we did, and the next year but him AHEAD of Matthew Stafford. They put Joe Cox ahead of Matthew Stafford too, in case you don’t want to face ANY of the facts of the 11 years and how we have WASTED TALENT around here.

Wait until the season is over.

Young team with 22 seniors and 25 juniors.

B.S.

I have no confidence that this coaching staff will make the right decision with Alec Ogletree who will play here 3 years – including this one- and be gone. Remember Knowshon Moreno ? Saw the best running back in 25 years 2 years. Then, taken with the 7th pick overall in the NFL Draft as the 7th best football player of all positions in the entire world. As for what he did here or is doing in the NFL, excuse me – he has been, was, and is great. That was as obvious as Alec Ogletree. Now, isn’t it ?

Oh, get him back for Florida. Florida sucks. No QB. No Special Teams. Rookie coach with zero experience looking totally bewildered on the sidelines; has fire. But, has failed to teach his kids how to not lose the football. Rule # 1 of football – don’t lose the football. Some might say Rule # 1 of football is OL and DL; can’t argue that – especially with us DEAD LAST IN THE WORLD AT THAT EVERY YEAR.

Thomas Brown

We lose to Florida 2-8 and DISNEYdawgs.com actually believe Mark Richt is on the hotseat and without predicting 11-3 and sitting back and saying well we beat NO ONE; let’s keep him 11-3, if Mark Richt can beat Florida, he is BACK. Back to what, pray tell ?

All 11 years, he has done the same. # 52 Total Offense. Lose to teams finishing Top 10. Lose to teams finishing Top 25. Lose to 18 teams who should not have finished Top 25 and of those 18 a total of 8 did manage to make the Top 25 but would not have, none of the 8 without their win over Mark Richt Loses to Bad Teams all 11 years too – spread out all 11 years. Not 1 bad year.

Speed Alec Ogletree back 2 weeks early for Florida. UNRANKED FLORIDA.
With home games vs hapless CUPCAKE New Mexico State, unranked Auburn whom you all told me was no good, unranked hapless CUPCAKE Kentucky, and winless over any good team Georgia tek. I mean wow.

What kind of a bowl opponent are you expecting this season ? We haven’t had 1 good opponent all 11 years in any bowl game, while the rest of the nation is glued to the top teams facing off, on the National Stage at the end of the Year.

Thomas Brown

October 12th, 2011
2:29 am

So, who do you expect this year for the bowl game ?

I am 100 confident that if we back into The SEC CG, that (1) DISNEYdawgs.com will act like we are the 2nd Coming and (2) we will be murderized.

I don’t know what we do with the talent around here; but I know this : we have wasted it for 11 years; and it is never more evident than from the list of 29 who this staff gave Scholarships to to play 2011 and are not. Good Riddance means that the staff chose wrong, or failed to coach them up, or failed to motivate. If it is the fault of the 29, then whose fault is it they were given the scholarships ? You just can’t answer it, about the 29 (not funny but wasted), about the 11 years, or about what is going to Albert Einstein the future recruits to also not be wasted. We have no sense of urgency.

And, of course, that is the fault of the fans. If we all got after them to GATA, we might actually do something with all this talent, averaging # 7 ranking every year all 11 years – and instead finding us after 2005 the # 27 team in won/lost record with no meaningful win.

Let’s talk about Alec Ogletree and what great decision this staff will make with him or how he is wasted as well, shall we ?

I would love to think that during a quiet moment in the day, CMR hops online to check the blogs here and a message board or two, just to see what the fan on the street thinks, but we all know it ain’t happening. And would you really want someone who ruled by committee anyway?

We pay the man $10,000/day to lead our football team and win games. The last few years hasn’t held up to UGA tradition, so we’re going to be disgruntled. Despite a rocky start and a quirk in the schedule, we’ve made four weeks of lemonade. The task still remains: Beat Florida, Auburn and Tech and so it in a manner befitting of Georgia Football. Yes, winning the last 4 games has been an improvement……..Yes, read that again….Us beating 4 very average teams an improvement. Should never have to write that. I have been hard on this staff ( not team) as I have to look back to 2009 to see win over a ranked team. It’s not the players fault that our roster doesn’t have enough OL or last year enough DL. I am pleased that Mark has run off some people. I am pleased at the aggressive play calling last week. I am pleased he’s letting some talented freshmen play.I’ll be happier when we beat a ranked team. I am not pleased at our second half performance against MSU or Tenn. on offense. We lose to good teams playing like that. I have come to the realization that Richt will win 8, maybe 9 games this year and will be back.

Why wait? I’ll tell you right now (as if someone should need to tell you) that Vandy is the perennial doormat of the SEC and that they are currently rebuilding their program after their Head Coach quit just before the 2009 season began and left them with a relatively unknown assistant as an interim Head Coach for the 2010 season.

Georgia has played exactly two (2) games that should not qualify as automatic win scrimmages. Georgia has defeated no team that has an SEC conference win on their record this season.

Zero, zilch, nada.

So please, don’t come onto this blog next week whining about how “nobody thought Georgia could beat Vandy”. Just don’t do it. You’re embarrassing yourself and the Georgia Bulldog football program when you make such blatantly false claims.

SECCG – East Division Champion

South Carolina:
1. Lost to Auburn
2. Will lose to Arkansas.
3. Will lose to Florida

Florida:
1. Lost to Alabama
2. Lost to LSU
3. Will lose to Auburn

Georgia:
1. Lost to South Carolina
2. Will lose to Florida
3. Will lose to Auburn

Who is the winner of this highly plausible three-way tie? That will be the East Division Champ.
Looks like it will be Florida, since they will be the only team to have no losses against East Division opponents.

@Cmon man

There is no skill involved in choosing random numbers. My prognostications are based upon empirical evidence gathered by observing these football programs in action. I could be wrong, but you must admit that my estimates are reasonable.

Last year’s East Division Champion had three conference losses. I don’t see enough improvement in the division this year to cause me to believe that this year’s Division Champ should not have an equivalent conference record.

Look just because some FAITHFUL UGA supporters support CMR at this time does not make one a Kool Aid drinker.

Just because some are excited by running off 4 straight wins does not make one blind to the fact of the opposition.

Would one who claims to be a diehard UGA supporter rather had seen the opposite? The team collapse and tank the season after the USCe game?

I hope that some perspective that some have on this blog is not carried into there daily lives. UGA has ran off 4 straight wins, lighten up a litte and enjoy it.

We wait 8-9 months a year for this and some of you would rather bitch and moan and act like you are entitled to a National Title. Yet you bash some of these players for there perceived entitled attitude. You might wanna step back and gather some perspective about what really is important in life.

Let’s not get to excited Dawg fans. None of the teams we have beaten will have a winning record at season’s end. We still should win the East as Gators will lose to Auburn this weekend and Carolina still has to play Arkansas. As long as we don’t slip up, we should play for SEC championship. That one will probably be ugly as we are not in same class with Bama or LSU .

He got torched at safety last year.

He is 6′3″ 235 LBS and is a hitter.

Grantham and Olividatti both coached in the NFL

They have improved our defense each week and it will only get better with Tree returning

How about you STFU and let these NFL caliber coaches do their job and quit criticizing their every move just because you hate Coach Richt?

You never say anything positive about any part of Georgia’s football program. All you do is whine, whine whine like a dam little 5 year old.

You have bragged about being a great athlete and a great student during your time at Georgia but you are severely lacking in the most important areas

I think that is the whole amazing point of the Richt era, we actually are competitive with a semi pro team and we shouldn’t be. Never happened with Dooley, always knew for several years we were in for a butt whipping. And who are these people comparing this new kid yall have got to Walker? Walker walks out on a field and runs over a future pro defensive back in his first game, and never slowed down after that. So yes, I am the one the famous Thomas Brown called out. He picks out games that he wants to call losses to cupcakes throughout the ten years of CMR as his “proof”, then continues to complain about Aaron Murray, CMR, redshirting Jay Rome, and whatever else he is clueless about and then on a previous blog asks “so why are you always picking on me TampaDawg?” Oh gosh, where do I start? So let me just go with this then:
“18 teams who end that season with 5 or more losses, and none of whom would end in the Top 25 without their WINS over Mark Richt that season.

LIAR they all came just only last year, 1 bad year. B.S.”

First off Thomas Brown, you stinking little 12-year-old stuck in your room, you don’t have one shred of integrity enough to be calling me a liar! Get that through your thick skull first. Secondly, before calling me a liar, you should check your own post. 18 losses to teams with 5 or more losses? But you posted their records for the world to see and seven of them have 4 or LESS losses. 7 of those games are against teams with 9 wins or more. You have losses posted to teams like AU, UF, GT, UT and SC on there. Never a cupcake game against any of these teams. It’s the way football is in the SEC and against Tech (which by the way, you failed to point out the 1-9 vs. Tech, but then again, you always focus on the negative). Go back to your hole and quit spinning crap. You don’t know crap about QB play, you don’t know crap about coaching, you don’t know crap about scholarship allotment (as has been pointed out OVER and OVER again but you still ramble on about it), and you just don’t know crap about football. Deal with it.

Hopelessly Devoted,

I normally don’t respond to such rubbish but the 3-way tie would go to the team who has the highest BCS rating at the time. Probably USCe.

As far as Tree returning, Gilliard will remain in the starting position for Robinson and Tree will start with Herrera on 2nd team. Gilliard and Tree are going to be nasty against UF but the 2nd teamers will get plenty of reps as well. Good problem to have. I still say Herrera is going to be the best LB UGA has ever had by the time his career is over. Everyone please note….He is a 19 yr old freshman playing the hardest position in the SEC. He is going to shatter all of the UGA LB records.

Here’s what you guys should argue over. If by some way you do get to represent the East in Atlanta just how much of a snowball’s chance do you actualyl think you have against juggernauts like Bama or LSU? The extent of the beating you would receive against either opponent would most likely kill another mascot. Does Sonny have another one ready to go after this year?

Your schedule has been beyond creampuff. The East is in shambles. Bama beat UF up and LSU finished them off. Wait till were done with UT on Oct. 22 after LSU wails on them. You guys are beyond lucky this year. Once Bama comes back on the schedule next year, not so much.

Evil,

The article points out plenty of factual of information, but as a fan what are we supposed to do? We cant change the schedule midstream partner. You play the hand you are dealt. UGA has had this schedule set for three years or longer w/in the conference. Not our fault these teams suck wind. You still have to go out and play the game.

Of course it would smooth our respective ego’s if we had at least split the first two, but we didnt so no sense crying over spilt milk. If you along with many others who are on the fire CMR bandwagon my suggestion is to not pull for the team the rest of the year. Hope we lose the rest of the games. Will that suite you?

It boild down to the lunatic fringe part of this fanbase who feels entitled for some reason. We have not won a NT since 1980! Is that CMR fault? Blame Dooley, Goff, and Donnan also.

Richt at least legitimized the program again. Sure we have sucked it up the past two years, but it does appear he has taken steps in addressing it. Look at the young talent in the skills position.

We cannot go back and change the past three years, nor the first two games. What we can only want to see is the trend rising rather than falling. At this juncture the needle is rising. Is it legitimate? We will see, but damn I would rather be sitting at 4-2 as opposed to 2-4.

If Richt stays or if he is fired I still will support this program. I feel as if many are to hellbent in firing the man to perhaps acknowledge the fact maybe, just maybe this team might have figured itself out.

If we finish strong and somehow make it to the Dome we promise to show up. We’ll also show up next year.

The embarrassing truth about UGA

October 12th, 2011

A few facts about your UGA that you might consider:

1. UGA is the nation’s #1 party school. That means that UGA has the highest number of drunks on campus of all the colleges and universities in the U.S. These drunks keep the Athens-Clarke County jail full, and provide full employment to law enforcement personnel, bail bondsmen, and attorneys. Really something to be proud of, isn’t it.

2. UGA athletes are some of the most illiterate morons in the country. Most of them take remedial studies, which is the stuff that most kids learn by the seventh grade. But not your dummies, who you laughingly call student-athletes. The very few who actually graduate have worthless diplomas in worthless studies that no employer is looking for.

3. Even your fans are trashy, stupid drunks. Take a look at what your campus looks like after a home game, and check the number of DUIs the police issue between Athens and Atlanta after a game.

4. UGA athletes must think that ankle monitoring bracelets are bling, they see so many of them in the locker room.

A really miserable, sorry place, and a huge embarrassment to all Georgians.

Is Coach Ball in touch with reality? Mitchell is the only wide reciever who has consistently played at an acceptable level. T.K. has seemed to actually quit during pass routes, not to mention during games. Brown? Is he serious? Brown has shown no guts whatsoever. Maybe Bennet or Conley will step up, but that is not a sure thing either. Against TN we were basically down to two freshmen performing well on offense at the skill positions – Mitchell and Crowell. Smith did ok when they used him, which, of course, was not enough. It’s fairly obvious we need both Smith and Crowell in the game at the same time, but can’t because both wear # one – perhaps indicative of deeper issues.Without Mitchell, I fear we become too one dimensional.

I believe one of the UGA coaches said that injuries opens opportunities for others. But should it take an injury to find out that another person can play as well or better than the starter? It’s a known fact that some players are not good practice players but turn into animals once the gun sounds. I believe players should be rotated into games just for that purpose. Our coaches don’t see the value in doing that and that’s why our other quarterbacks have no game experience. So don’t look for Rome or Marshall unless there’s more injuries.

We aren’t there and we haven’t been there in a while. We get the talent, but we just don’t get the coaching. I realize Richt’s winning %, but there is alot of fuff in there and not enough substance. evil empire’s post at 8:19am references an article by Russ Mitchell on CollegeFootballNews.com. The article is titled; “CFN Analysis Week 6 Thoughts, Oct.10″ Mr. Mitchell, IMO has done a great analysis of Coach Richt’s “program” at UGA and where it stands.

I am happy over the 4 game winning streak. However, during the last few minutes of the games with Miss., Miss. St. and Tenn., I was on edge wondering if UGA was going to “blow it” and lose. For me an indication that things have “really” improved would be the end of this phobia thing with Fla. Richt did not start it, but it would be nice if he could end it.

“One guy who can defend the forward pass”–really?
Then what about the pass breakups by Herrara and Gilliard last game. And Baccari’s four picks (I think an interception qualifies as defending the “forward pass”). And Sanders Commings has had pass breakups and INT’s. And there are plenty of other examples.

Here’s my historical perspective on Richt:

Won 100 games in 10 1/2 years
lost 36 games

Won 2 SEC titles

Won 3 SEC East titles

Faced an improved league with Cutcliffe, Spurrier, Meyer, Saban, Mullen, Fulmer, Miles and has held his own

Made a huge mistake in not retaining BVG and promoting his college roommate Martinez

Made a mistake in promoting Bobo to OC and relinquishing playcalling.

Let the discipline of the team get too far gone before recognizing changes needed to be made

Made a great hire in Todd Grantham(his bad cop)

Remains to be seen if we can finish out this year with 10 straight wins, get to Atlanta and play well.

That’s Richt

Everything else is just whining and complaining.

This season could have gone much better. We all knew that we had the easiest conference schedule possible this year. That, and the current state of the Florida and Tennessee programs gave us hope to make the SECCG in 2011. It is nothing short of a miracle that it is still mathematically possible for that to happen.

If only we could have swapped the SC and Auburn games. Auburn is improving with each game and SC is keeping to their tendencies and self-destructing as the season progresses. We probably could have beaten Auburn early and we could probably beat SC right now without their starting QB.

Even Florida got lucky on timing, since they’ll have Brantley back and Demps and Rainey will be healthy again when we play them. I’m tickled to have won 4 in a row, but look at the four teams we beat. Our defense is better than last year’s. Then again, I don’t see how it could have gotten much worse. I haven’t seen anything that makes me believe that we can beat Auburn or Florida. Do I hope for a miracle? Sure I do. I’m just not gonna hold my breath waiting for one.

Any SEC team should expect to beat Vandy – at any place and any time. How badly we beat them will tell me a lot about whether this team has made real progress, or if our little win streak is all smoke and mirrors.

Some of the comments from the more delusional among us make my head spin. Someone actually said that Georgia is the third best team in the SEC. Oh… I feel dizzy. Arky is clearly #3 and we have to dispatch both Auburn and Florida and have SC continue to melt down to claim #4. Someone else said about Crowell: “Everytime he touches the ball he is a threat to take it to the house.” Really? He’s played in six games and he hasn’t “taken it to the house” yet. So where’s the threat? C’mon people, he’s a true Freshman and he wouldn’t be playing at all if our other running backs hadn’t quit the team.

I may be Hopelessly Devoted, but I’m not bone dead stupid.

Jan Kemp was a deeply disturbed woman who led a life to which no rational human being would aspire. Consider: two suicide attempts, once by pills and once by stabbing herself multiple times in the chest with a butcher knife. She spent stretches in psychiatric wards and went to jail for almost a year for contempt of court. The rumors out there are much, much worse. But really, you don’t need to get into any of the rumor and innuendo to conclude that this woman had serious problems. Actually, given the climate in Athens in the early 80s, you’d have to be crazy to call out UGA on academic preferences for football players. That may be proof enough right there that she was nuts.

Face facts. Richt maintained a better than average win percentage early in his career because he was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. For some reason it seems that this is a pivotal game almost each year. I feel that way this year. Vandy really does have a very good Defense. I think it will be a challenge for us to score on them as it will be for them to score on us. But this may be the “gut renching” season changing game that we need. We need a real “ball breaking win” A final drive win, that will give this team the confidence to allow our boys to finally say, Hey we can beat anybody in the country. We all know what happened in 2007 after the Vanderbilt win. Something emerged out of Athens, Georgia that no other football team in America wanted a piece of. Poor Hawaii. There women sure were purty but thats about all Hawaii could muster up. Again we got screwed by the BCS system. And I just thought of this, maybe that is what happened to Mark Richt. I know he did change after that season and was not the same person. I don’t know if was because he felt he got shaffted, or that Urban Myer cried so much about the way he felt Georgia played that maybe the League did something to put a bad taste in his mouth. What ever it was CMR lost focus. Well, if you look at things now, there is one thing I can assure you of, Greg McGarrity is going to back his coaches up. That is a fact. but at the same time he is going to have high expectations for them also. From this point on CMR is going to have the opportunity, to not just put the ship back in the right direction. But to get this Battleship full steam ahead within the next two years. If CMR can adapt and overcome all will be well within puppyland. And you can bet a National Championship will be close too.

No wonder Rome has been a total bust. His mind should be totally on football, NOT basketball. He was a 5-Star recruit and a member of the Dream Team, yet, here at mid-season when we are desperately trying to win the East, his mind is on basketball? Richt should tell him to go ahead and play basketball full-time, for all the help he has been to the football team. He is a me-first guy and an energy vampire.

If I were CMR, I’d continue to insert true freshmen at every position available. Put Justin S-W at Marlon Browns’ position (M. Brown=Durell Robinson), get Rome in the game as well as our young OL. And remember that nothing good ever happens with Samuel IV in the game. BTW, tell Boo he has two games to either get ready to play or transfer to North Alabama…I’m tired of paying for these goldbricks. How ’bout Richt paying for these deadbeats out of his $3M?

The most embarrassing thing is the win-at-any-price mentality of Richt, which has effectively made UGA a football f-a-c-t-o-r-y, with cheating, recruiting of low-intelligence jerks who barely graduated from high school, and tolerating immoral and unethical activities by both players and coaches. Even with all this, he still can’t win.

SEC East

Top Tier (Guaranteed out-of-conference win against a quality opponent)
???

Mid Tier (50/50 out-of-conference win against a quality opponent)
SC
UF

Bottom Feeder (Guaranteed out-of-conference loss against a quality opponent)
UT
UK
Vandy
UGA

SEC West

Top Tier
Alabama
LSU

Mid Tier

Auburn

Bottom Feeder
Missy State
Ole Miss

Those are the facts. ESPN trumpets the greatness of the SEC — I would too if I signed a 15-year broadcasting deal with them — but the facts don’t lie. I just don’t see Vandy, Ole Miss, or Kentucky taking down Oregon, Texas, Oklahoma, or Boise State.

The SEC is Alabama, LSU, and the 10 dwarves…

To all Dawgs…. Jay Rome will be a very good player for UGA. He by no means is a “Bust” .That just happens to be a strength for UGA. Crowell or Mitchell would not be starting for LSU,Bama, or a few others. They will be great players in the future. Don’t take Vandy lightly. They play very good Defense. UGA just does not have the depth (yet) to win it all. Just the facts.

Lost focus in 2007 ? Sure the loss to South Carolina a 6-6 non-bowl team and blow-out loss to an avg at best vols team was bad. But, how could he have lost focus only in 2007 through today sir ? 2006 Mark Richt LOST to 4 teams, including to 4-8 Vandie. @Thomas Brown – you’re a smart dude. You know how to copy and paste a bunch of stats, figures and roster moves. Congrats. Smart dudes go to Tech right? I’ll follow your style with a post on “feelings” since Richt entered the UGA Picture.
2001: First year – let him work
2002: Holy Hell we broke a 20 year drought! SEC Champs!
2003: SEC East Repeat!
2004: Just missed the title game, but we’re top 10 and the program is rolling!
2005: SEC Champs again!
2006: “Rebuliding Year that included 9 wins, the last 3 over ranked and favored teams
2007: The “celebration” the “blackout” the “domination” in the Sugar Bowl and finished #2 in the nation
2008: Disappointing 10 win season only because we were NUMBER ONE to start
2009: Another “rebuilding” year – frustrating but it happens
2010: We lose our best player for a third of the season and then lose every close game we play in. Team said “F it” in the bowl
- Best Recruiting Class in 5 years –
2011: We lose two to start, but for 4 weeks straight, we get better…. and better… and better – and the Dream Team shows it is paying off. Crowell. Mitchell. Herrerra. Conley. Drew.

If you look honestly at the body of work – Richt must win 8 games this season or he should be fired. But he will win 9, keep his job, make the Outback Bowl, show a marked improvement and UGA will cycle back to a contender in a down SEC EAST.

9-3 this year would have been roundly accepted if it was offered to fans in the preseason. Beat Vandy this Saturday and that is where we are headed. Thank your stars we have who we have as head coach.

…. can he just call the plays though? His FSU Offenses and our 2001-08 Offenses were sick. Just sayin…

“If you asked most Georgia fans if they would be satisfied with 4-2, I think most would have said yes.”

25 Juniors and 22 Seniors on my Media Guide page 10 Official Depth Chart for 2011 while DISNEYdawgs.com about our YOUTH MOVEMENT because we have 2 freshmen on offense, both beat-up, who did well against 4 cupcakes and 1 Freshman on defense; and, we are supposed to agree with you that most would have said oh heck yeah, we are doing great having beat Coastal Carolina a 1-AA team with no offense, no special teams, no running back and no quarterback and plays in the Big South. Having beat Ole Miss who lost to Vandie 7-30 and has 0 conference wins. Having beat Missy State who has only beat UAB, Memphis and Louisiana Tech whom they just beat in Overtime; and has 0 conference wins. And, having beat the vols who have beat Montana, Cincinnati and Buffalo and has 0 conference wins, and now hopefully will eke out a win vs Vandie who has been BLOWN-OUT the past 2 weeks while they have no offense, no quarterback, no running back, no talent, no special teams, a new coach, no recruiting and oh yeah have the only conference win of any of our opponents to date – a win over hapless Ole Miss.

If you are SATISFIED with THAT, you are the PROBLEM we have with our football program nowadays # 27 in won/lost record after 2005 through today. I am NOT satisfied and I know for a FACT that I am 1 of MOST BULLDOGS’ FANS when I say that I am not satisfied. Good heavens.

pj, I write my own material. 2001 1st year you give him a bye – with all the talent handed to him while he LOST to cupcake 5-Loss Auburn and LOST to Boston College, while Boston College was UNRANKED WHEN WE PLAYED THEM. Neither would have finished in the Top 25. He knocked the lid off the # 11 all-time 1-A wins football program with Six (6) NC in the NCAA Official Records Book he told us, but LOST 4 games, 2 to CUPCAKES.

2002 – don’t look too closely pj, we LOST to another CUPCAKE a 5-Loss Florida team who did not finish in the Top 25 of ANY poll going 0-11 on 3rd Down Conversions with MARK RICHT CALLING THE PLAYS. SEC Championship ? Is that what you call a year in which The SEC had only 1 other team finish in the Coaches’ Poll Top 25 a 4-Loss Auburn ? I say that is TAINTED. SEC way down. Beat a 5-Loss Florida State team in our bowl game; I mean wow – just saying.

2003 – LOST to a 5-LOSS Florida again. What was it you said about 2003, it was GREAT ? Really ? 2003 ? The way all of us felt in 2003, was NOT GOOD SIR. NOT GOOD AT ALL. We lost 3 games 2003. LSU blew us away 2003 in The SEC Championship Game 34-13 and you run in here and proclaim we were SEC East Champions AGAIN ! ? You run in here now 9 seasons later to re-write HISTORY that we were GREAT ? We beat a 5-7 UAB at our HOME 16-13. Zowie.

2004 – presumably you don’t remember 2004, either. “Just missed the title game.” We LOST to a 3-Loss vols should have been 4-Loss vols at our HOME and were out of The SEC East early then got blown out by Auburn 24-6. You come away with that for 2004 as “just missed the title game.” ? All of us at the time were BUMMED OUT by the loss to the vols and the Auburn game put us out of our MISERY with their BLOW-OUT of us.

2005 – “SEC Champs Again!” ? Excuse me pj, correct me now if I wrong and you are right – but in the final polls for 2005 UGA was NOT # 1 of SEC teams but # 3. LSU and Alabama BOTH ended up HIGHER in the polls than Georgia. You consider that all you have to do is run in here and write “SEC Champs again!” and ALL IS FORGOTTEN about losing to Florida while the coaching staff bragged how great Joe Tereshinski III was going to be for us ? Sitting down at the Georgia Dome beside me and be losing 28 to nothing as soon as the kick-off happened only to lose ? Losing to Auburn AGAIN ? I hardly think “SEC Champs again!” covers all this, now does it pj, sir ?

Thomas Brown

October 13th, 2011

2006 – “9 wins 3 over ranked teams at end season” ? You think that covers 2006, pj, sir ? 14-game season for the top teams and we are 5-games short of that. Aren’t we for 2006 ? You want to talk about ranked teams 2006 ? How about we talk about 4-8 UNRANKED Vandie 2006 who beat us at our House ? How about 5-Loss UNRANKED Kentucky 2006 who beat us ? We LOST 4 games 2006 and all you can say is 9 wins in a 14-game season – and oh yeah you give Coach a bye again for REBUILDING after 5 years ? Why is that ? Because all of the Jim Donnan recruits who had been redshirted finally were all gone ?
2007 – “The Celebration” that is what you recall about 2007 season, which was the MOST BONE-HEADED coaching move ever in the history of college football for which he is to this very day derided ? What ? Nothing about being hosed in favor of LSU when UGA beat 0 teams finishing in the AP Poll Top 10 while LSU beat two (2) ? No discussion about the vols or South Carolina ? You really think you can summarize 2007 without discussing the vols a 4-Loss should have been 5-Loss team who kicked our fannies up and down the field 35-14 by 3 touchdowns BLOW-OUT and that you can IGNORE (or try to if I didn’t reply) that we LOST to a 6-6 South Carolina team who did not even play in a bowl game ? We were out of The SEC East race, before it started, early in the season; and we BEAT NO ONE who ended the season in the AP Poll Top 10 but LSU sure did that same year, beating 2 teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 10.
“2008 – Disappointing 10 win season only because we were NUMBER ONE to start” That does not even begin to tell the story now does it ? # 1 yes every poll that night 22 of our players go out to “CELEBRATE” there is your “celebration” get drunk, get in fights, get arrested and we then play 3 REASONABLE teams all season giving up 29, 31, and 42 consecutive points and end up # 13 in the final polls. Had we started out # 13 where we ended, we would have ended not in the Top 25, which is where we belonged, again BEATING NO ONE. In the 3 reasonable games we did play 2008, we handed the football to Knowshon Moreno an average of 14 carries. We had redshirted him the year before you recall, so this was 1 of his 2 years we got to see him play. The best RB in the last 25 years.
2009 – You called 2006 a rebuilding year. You called 2008 a rebuilding year. Now, without shame, you run in here to declare 2009 is a rebuilding year, again, it happens you say ? No sir. You are lying to yourself, calling all these years rebuilding years. And, we didn’t even get to 2010 yet. What is this season 2011 ? What are you saying here ? 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 five (5) of these last 6 years are ALL REBUILDING YEARS ? And, you think you can take on me with these statements, pj, sir, with all due respect ?

2010 – you don’t discuss at all. 2010 we ended up with Seven (7) Losses. Have to go all the way back to 1953, fifty-eight years ago to find 1 of our UGA Bulldogs’ football teams who lost more games than we just did and you give them the excuse they TOOK THE BOWL GAME OFF and just said f it. What you mean to say is REBUILDING YEAR # 5 of the last 6 years. By the way, we avg # 7 in recruiting ranking all 11 years avg both Rivals and Scout rankings. 2010 we ended up with the WORST CLASS MARK RICHT EVER RECRUITED ANYWHERE. # 17. You said that wrong, pj, sir.
2011 – “8 games is all Mark Richt has to win to KEEP HIS JOB, get a raise from his 3.5 million annual total compensation and contract extension.” Yeah, right. We play 10 CUPCAKES and all he has to win is 8. That means he can lose to 2 CUPCAKES. Which 2 can he lose to ? 1 is the bowl game vs another TYPICAL MARK RICHT BOWL OPPONENT. Playing for dollars is that same nutjob that posts as Purity and a couple of other handles on here. Same exact wording and everything. Funny thing is, there is no proof of any of the allegations so the whacko making the posts should be sued for defamation of character for the slanderous, unfounded remarks.

lets be honest here, we are 4-2 any we havent beat anyone why do we care about tech we beat them every year and they happen to have a good year this year georiga defense has got throttled by the only 2 good teams they played their defense padded their stat against bottom feeding sec teams… until we play a decent team in florida lets please stop trash talking

Posing as a UGA fan on this blog, or posing as a Tech fan on their blog. You and I just had a discussion about this (my name was under a different, but obviously pro UGA handle … 1-9). Thanks for your opinion troll but as I mentioned to YOU on the GT blog, UGA defense did NOT get throttled by SC. Lattimore will get his yards and that’s a given for most teams, but throttled. NOT hardly..

Let’s talk about UGA “Those are the facts. ESPN trumpets the greatness of the SEC — I would too if I signed a 15-year broadcasting deal with them — but the facts don’t lie. I just don’t see Vandy, Ole Miss, or Kentucky taking down Oregon, Texas, Oklahoma, or Boise State.”

Maybe they sound the trumpets of the greatness of the SEC because of the 7 BCS titles and 5 consecutive. It’s ok tech fan, keep trying to justify why the other conferences can’t hang .. All Cupcake Conference can’t even muster a fair fight. The SUC-12 out west is mediocre at best. The Pig-11 still thinks running Michigan, PSU, and Wisconsin out there regularly makes them great (notice OSU is no longer on that list .. now there is a school who has had some lawlessness dating back to before Maurice Clarett).

Joe Cox ?

He LOST to UNRANKED final AP Poll Okie State, LOST to a poor LSU at HOME, eked by a pitiful Arizona State, BLOWN-OUT by a 6-Loss vols’ team who sucked too, BLOWN-OUT by Florida, and LOST to Kentucky at HOME. He threw 218 completions and 16 interceptions, that is 7 and a half percent of his completions were to the OTHER team. Now, what lie instead did you say about

JOE COX ?

UGA Insider October 13th, 2011 9:40 am

“At some point within the next few years if not sooner Chris Petersen will be the new head coach at UGA. He will try and get Grantham to stay.”

Tampo, Let’s talk about Georgia – you say – then, go on to POINT out that The SEC has NEVER LOST the BCS Title Game 7-0. And, talk about NOTHING GEORGIA and everything how great The SEC is with 5 SEC teams ranked in the AP Poll Top 25. And, Georgia… ?

Here is what I simply do not get from the blogs in the past few days and a theme going on now that the win streak is hitting 4 (and 5) games. WHO exactly is it that you folks keep preaching to that are saying it means anything more than it does? Aunt Sally? We beat those teams. period. Nobody has equated it to anything but beating those teams which was a far cry better than losing to those teams. Have some of you gotten so paranoid that somebody might actually just accept winning as good thing, you need to completely invent the danger of making it more than it is? We even have the guy yesterday getting a 3 week head start on setting up his agenda how beating FL would just be terrible because they are perceived down now.

Some of you folks are so far removed from the original point of your being a fan of college football, you can’t even enjoy winning a damn ball game anymore.

I do, and everybody I know in the real world does. No idea where these folks in here come from.

Not getting into it with you Thomas Brown, but notice there is a quote behind the words “Let’s Talk about Georgia” .. it was someone’s handle on here, not my words.

You may think I’m crazy, but I think Vandy keeps this game close to the very end.

Georgia is the perpetual “next year” mode.

Let's talk about UGA!

@TampaDawg

The SEC does have some great teams — but let’s face it, boy — UGA ain’t one of them.
Richt should be fired on the grounds that he brings in talent equal to or greater than LSU and Alabama and does absolutely nothing with it.

Yeah joe cox. He knew the playbook and was the best option.

If richt had done what you are advocating, we would have lost 8 games.

4-8

florida is being forced to play freshmen QB’s who aren’t ready.

How’s that working out?

I have forgotten more football than you know THOMAS BROWN, SIR.

Your arguments are pathetic and feeble.

I’m not sold on this Georgia team. They look better. This is the first time in four years that they’ve won four in a row I think. Still, it was four teams that are all down for one reason or another. Not Mark Richt’s fault. Tennessee should have been a big game. Ole Miss shouldn’t be a bottom feeder. We’re in a strange cycle in the SEC. MSU was supposed to be good this year, and they played a good game against LSU, but now they’re down too. I don’t expect Vandy to hang with Georgia. Then again, I wouldn’t be too shocked if they did.
