ATHENS – Add another name to the list of football players planning to play basketball at Georgia.
Jay Rome, a freshman tight end from Valdosta, said he recently received the blessing of basketball coach Mark Fox to come out for basketball after the football season in over. Rome will join fellow freshman Nick Marshall on the hardwood.
“I’m not exactly sure when I’ll be able to start working with the team but me and my father talked with Coach Fox a week or so ago and basketball is definitely going to happen,” said Rome, a 6-foot-6, 240-pound forward. “In high school, I always thought basketball was my favorite sport, but I figured I’d have a better chance to play football in college. But over the past month or so, I decided I wanted to play basketball again because I missed it so much.”
Rome was a three-time player of the year at Valdosta, where he averaged 25 points and 12 rebounds his senior season. Rome’s father Stan Rome starred in basketball and football at Clemson in the 1970s. A four-star signee in football, Jay Rome is being redshirted in that sport this season.
“Me and [sophomore forward] Marcus Thornton have become good friends up here,” said Rome, who expects to play small forward with the Bulldogs. “We talked a lot and hang out a lot and he talked me into coming out.”
Replacing Malcolm Mitchell
Receivers coach Tony Ball said the Bulldogs will miss Malcolm Mitchell’s big-play ability but does not see his absence this week due to a hamstring injury radically altering the receiving corps.
“We’re certainly going to miss an element on offense, but other players have got to step up,” Ball said. “That’s what we expect. I imagine Michael Bennett or Marlon Brown or T.K. [Tavarres King] or Chris Conley will step up. Those guys understand that. They’ve got to make plays.”
Ball said Mitchell, who averages 17.5 yards on 25 receptions, is not necessarily faster than the rest of the receivers. He’s merely opportunistic and determined.
“I think there’s comparable speed. I just think Malcolm has taken advantage of his opportunities. He’s where he’s supposed to be and he’s able to make the play when it comes to him. That’s a big part of it.”
They said it
Quarterback Aaron Murray surrounded by reporters Tuesday at Georgia’s weekly media day and being asked what the Bulldogs needed to do to cut down on turnovers when senior tight end Aron White, who was walking by, decided to chime in.
“Yeah, no interceptions,” White interjected.
Murray deadpanned a response. “Yeah, no holding!”
White’s holding penalty against Tennessee was the first of four in a row by Georgia in the fourth quarter Saturday that led to a second-and-56-yards-to-go.
“Touche’!” replied White as he retreated toward the locker room.
Injury report
Cornerback Branden Smith suffered a slight “stinger” on his flattening hit of Tennessee wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers. But he was able to complete the game and is practicing this week.
“That’s part of football,” Smith told reporters. “All spring, all summer, I tried to be a physical player. Ever since I got up here, everybody said I wasn’t a physical player, so this year I’ve been working on being physical with the receivers and running backs. Hard work is paying off.”
It looks like wide receiver Rantavious Wooten will miss his fourth consecutive game with a concussion he suffered in a car accident last month. The junior once
Etc. . . .
Captains for the Vanderbilt game are center Ben Jones, offensive tackle Cordy Glenn, cornerback Brandon Boykin and special teams player Kosta Vavlas. . . . After facing the league’s top-ranked third-down conversion team in Tennessee (56.3 percent), the Bulldogs will square off versus the SEC’s 12th-ranked team in the category in Vanderbilt (18.5 percent). Georgia is seventh in the conference in third-down conversions at 38.6 percent.

Last I heard, the Vandy game was going to be on ESPN3 and/or Fox SportSouth. Thomas Brown…have you thought of starting a Support Group? You could have the speakers introduce themselves (like you) as: “Hello Group, My Name is Thomas Brown and I am a Loser! Of course the group will all reply with: “Hello Loser!”

For some reason it seems that this is a pivotal game almost each year. I feel that way this year. Vandy really does have a very good Defense. I think it will be a challenge for us to score on them as it will be for them to score on us. But this may be the “gut renching” season changing game that we need. We need a real “ball breaking win” A final drive win, that will give this team the confidence to allow our boys to finally say, Hey we can beat anybody in the country. We all know what happened in 2007 after the Vanderbilt win. Something emerged out of Athens, Georgia that no other football team in America wanted a piece of. Poor Hawaii. There women sure were purty but thats about all Hawaii could muster up. Again we got screwed by the BCS system. And I just thought of this, maybe that is what happened to Mark Richt. I know he did change after that season and was not the same person. I don’t know if was because he felt he got shaffted, or that Urban Myer cried so much about the way he felt Georgia played that maybe the League did something to put a bad taste in his mouth. What ever it was CMR lost focus. Well, if you look at things now, there is one thing I can assure you of, Greg McGarrity is going to back his coaches up. That is a fact. but at the same time he is going to have high expectations for them also. From this point on CMR is going to have the opportunity, to not just put the ship back in the right direction. But to get this Battleship full steam ahead within the next two years. If CMR can adapt and overcome all will be well within puppyland. And you can bet a National Championship will be close too.

No wonder Rome has been a total bust. His mind should be totally on football, NOT basketball. He was a 5-Star recruit and a member of the Dream Team, yet, here at mid-season when we are desperately trying to win the East, his mind is on basketball? Richt should tell him to go ahead and play basketball full-time, for all the help he has been to the football team. He is a me-first guy and an energy vampire.

If I were CMR, I’d continue to insert true freshmen at every position available. Put Justin S-W at Marlon Browns’ position (M. Brown=Durell Robinson), get Rome in the game as well as our young OL. And remember that nothing good ever happens with Samuel IV in the game. BTW, tell Boo he has two games to either get ready to play or transfer to North Alabama…I’m tired of paying for these goldbricks. How ’bout Richt paying for these deadbeats out of his $3M?

The most embarrassing thing is the win-at-any-price mentality of Richt, which has effectively made UGA a football f-a-c-t-o-r-y, with cheating, recruiting of low-intelligence jerks who barely graduated from high school, and tolerating immoral and unethical activities by both players and coaches. Even with all this, he still can’t win.

To all Dawgs…. Jay Rome will be a very good player for UGA. He by no means is a “Bust” .That just happens to be a strength for UGA. Crowell or Mitchell would not be starting for LSU,Bama, or a few others. They will be great players in the future. Don’t take Vandy lightly. They play very good Defense. UGA just does not have the depth (yet) to win it all. Just the facts.

Excuse me, Joe Cox LOST the game; how much worse can it have been with chronic sore shoulder, flu, flew to game in private charter, missing day of practice every week, losing to team who ended up not in the AP Poll Top 25 WITH their win over us – would it have been, again, to have tried any other able-bodied QB ?

Lost focus in 2007 ? Sure the loss to South Carolina a 6-6 non-bowl team and blow-out loss to an avg at best vols team was bad. But, how could he have lost focus only in 2007 through today sir ? 2006 Mark Richt LOST to 4 teams, including to 4-8 Vandie. Mark Richt, agreed, has lost focus, but it was not the 2007 season, which was by the way, Five (5) seasons ago. It was 2006, sir.

@Thomas Brown – you’re a smart dude. You know how to copy and paste a bunch of stats, figures and roster moves. Congrats. Smart dudes go to Tech right? I’ll follow your style with a post on “feelings” since Richt entered the UGA Picture.
2001: First year – let him work
2002: Holy Hell we broke a 20 year drought! SEC Champs!
2003: SEC East Repeat!
2004: Just missed the title game, but we’re top 10 and the program is rolling!
2005: SEC Champs again!
2006: “Rebuliding Year that included 9 wins, the last 3 over ranked and favored teams
2007: The “celebration” the “blackout” the “domination” in the Sugar Bowl and finished #2 in the nation
2008: Disappointing 10 win season only because we were NUMBER ONE to start
2009: Another “rebuilding” year – frustrating but it happens
2010: We lose our best player for a third of the season and then lose every close game we play in. Team said “F it” in the bowl
- Best Recruiting Class in 5 years –
2011: We lose two to start, but for 4 weeks straight, we get better…. and better… and better – and the Dream Team shows it is paying off. Crowell. Mitchell. Herrerra. Conley. Drew.
If you look honestly at the body of work – Richt must win 8 games this season or he should be fired. But he will win 9, keep his job, make the Outback Bowl, show a marked improvement and UGA will cycle back to a contender in a down SEC EAST.
9-3 this year would have been roundly accepted if it was offered to fans in the preseason. Beat Vandy this Saturday and that is where we are headed. Thank your stars we have who we have as head coach.
…. can he just call the plays though? His FSU Offenses and our 2001-08 Offenses were sick. Just sayin…

25 Juniors and 22 Seniors on my Media Guide page 10 Official Depth Chart for 2011 while DISNEYdawgs.com about our YOUTH MOVEMENT because we have 2 freshmen on offense, both beat-up, who did well against 4 cupcakes and 1 Freshman on defense; and, we are supposed to agree with you that most would have said oh heck yeah, we are doing great having beat Coastal Carolina a 1-AA team with no offense, no special teams, no running back and no quarterback and plays in the Big South. Having beat Ole Miss who lost to Vandie 7-30 and has 0 conference wins. Having beat Missy State who has only beat UAB, Memphis and Louisiana Tech whom they just beat in Overtime; and has 0 conference wins. And, having beat the vols who have beat Montana, Cincinnati and Buffalo and has 0 conference wins, and now hopefully will eke out a win vs Vandie who has been BLOWN-OUT the past 2 weeks while they have no offense, no quarterback, no running back, no talent, no special teams, a new coach, no recruiting and oh yeah have the only conference win of any of our opponents to date – a win over hapless Ole Miss.
If you are SATISFIED with THAT, you are the PROBLEM we have with our football program nowadays # 27 in won/lost record after 2005 through today. I am NOT satisfied and I know for a FACT that I am 1 of MOST BULLDOGS’ FANS when I say that I am not satisfied. Good heavens.

pj, I write my own material. 2001 1st year you give him a bye – with all the talent handed to him while he LOST to cupcake 5-Loss Auburn and LOST to Boston College, while Boston College was UNRANKED WHEN WE PLAYED THEM. Neither would have finished in the Top 25. He knocked the lid off the # 11 all-time 1-A wins football program with Six (6) NC in the NCAA Official Records Book he told us, but LOST 4 games, 2 to CUPCAKES.
2002 – don’t look too closely pj, we LOST to another CUPCAKE a 5-Loss Florida team who did not finish in the Top 25 of ANY poll going 0-11 on 3rd Down Conversions with MARK RICHT CALLING THE PLAYS. SEC Championship ? Is that what you call a year in which The SEC had only 1 other team finish in the Coaches’ Poll Top 25 a 4-Loss Auburn ? I say that is TAINTED. SEC way down. Beat a 5-Loss Florida State team in our bowl game; I mean wow – just saying.
2003 – LOST to a 5-LOSS Florida again. What was it you said about 2003, it was GREAT ? Really ? 2003 ? The way all of us felt in 2003, was NOT GOOD SIR. NOT GOOD AT ALL. We lost 3 games 2003. LSU blew us away 2003 in The SEC Championship Game 34-13 and you run in here and proclaim we were SEC East Champions AGAIN ! ? You run in here now 9 seasons later to re-write HISTORY that we were GREAT ? We beat a 5-7 UAB at our HOME 16-13. Zowie.
2004 – presumably you don’t remember 2004, either. “Just missed the title game.” We LOST to a 3-Loss vols should have been 4-Loss vols at our HOME and were out of The SEC East early then got blown out by Auburn 24-6. You come away with that for 2004 as “just missed the title game.” ? All of us at the time were BUMMED OUT by the loss to the vols and the Auburn game put us out of our MISERY with their BLOW-OUT of us.
2005 – “SEC Champs Again!” ? Excuse me pj, correct me now if I wrong and you are right – but in the final polls for 2005 UGA was NOT # 1 of SEC teams but # 3. LSU and Alabama BOTH ended up HIGHER in the polls than Georgia. You consider that all you have to do is run in here and write “SEC Champs again!” and ALL IS FORGOTTEN about losing to Florida while the coaching staff bragged how great Joe Tereshinski III was going to be for us ? Sitting down at the Georgia Dome beside me and be losing 28 to nothing as soon as the kick-off happened only to lose ? Losing to Auburn AGAIN ? I hardly think “SEC Champs again!” covers all this, now does it pj, sir ?

2006 – “9 wins 3 over ranked teams at end season” ? You think that covers 2006, pj, sir ? 14-game season for the top teams and we are 5-games short of that. Aren’t we for 2006 ? You want to talk about ranked teams 2006 ? How about we talk about 4-8 UNRANKED Vandie 2006 who beat us at our House ? How about 5-Loss UNRANKED Kentucky 2006 who beat us ? We LOST 4 games 2006 and all you can say is 9 wins in a 14-game season – and oh yeah you give Coach a bye again for REBUILDING after 5 years ? Why is that ? Because all of the Jim Donnan recruits who had been redshirted finally were all gone ?
2007 – “The Celebration” that is what you recall about 2007 season, which was the MOST BONE-HEADED coaching move ever in the history of college football for which he is to this very day derided ? What ? Nothing about being hosed in favor of LSU when UGA beat 0 teams finishing in the AP Poll Top 10 while LSU beat two (2) ? No discussion about the vols or South Carolina ? You really think you can summarize 2007 without discussing the vols a 4-Loss should have been 5-Loss team who kicked our fannies up and down the field 35-14 by 3 touchdowns BLOW-OUT and that you can IGNORE (or try to if I didn’t reply) that we LOST to a 6-6 South Carolina team who did not even play in a bowl game ? We were out of The SEC East race, before it started, early in the season; and we BEAT NO ONE who ended the season in the AP Poll Top 10 but LSU sure did that same year, beating 2 teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 10.
“2008 – Disappointing 10 win season only because we were NUMBER ONE to start” That does not even begin to tell the story now does it ? # 1 yes every poll that night 22 of our players go out to “CELEBRATE” there is your “celebration” get drunk, get in fights, get arrested and we then play 3 REASONABLE teams all season giving up 29, 31, and 42 consecutive points and end up # 13 in the final polls. Had we started out # 13 where we ended, we would have ended not in the Top 25, which is where we belonged, again BEATING NO ONE. In the 3 reasonable games we did play 2008, we handed the football to Knowshon Moreno an average of 14 carries. We had redshirted him the year before you recall, so this was 1 of his 2 years we got to see him play. The best RB in the last 25 years.
2009 – You called 2006 a rebuilding year. You called 2008 a rebuilding year. Now, without shame, you run in here to declare 2009 is a rebuilding year, again, it happens you say ? No sir. You are lying to yourself, calling all these years rebuilding years. And, we didn’t even get to 2010 yet. What is this season 2011 ? What are you saying here ? 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 five (5) of these last 6 years are ALL REBUILDING YEARS ? And, you think you can take on me with these statements, pj, sir, with all due respect ?

2010 – you don’t discuss at all. 2010 we ended up with Seven (7) Losses. Have to go all the way back to 1953, fifty-eight years ago to find 1 of our UGA Bulldogs’ football teams who lost more games than we just did and you give them the excuse they TOOK THE BOWL GAME OFF and just said f it. What you mean to say is REBUILDING YEAR # 5 of the last 6 years. By the way, we avg # 7 in recruiting ranking all 11 years avg both Rivals and Scout rankings. 2010 we ended up with the WORST CLASS MARK RICHT EVER RECRUITED ANYWHERE. # 17. You said that wrong, pj, sir.
2011 – “8 games is all Mark Richt has to win to KEEP HIS JOB, get a raise from his 3.5 million annual total compensation and contract extension.” Yeah, right. We play 10 CUPCAKES and all he has to win is 8. That means he can lose to 2 CUPCAKES. Which 2 can he lose to ? 1 is the bowl game vs another TYPICAL MARK RICHT BOWL OPPONENT. So, go ahead try to find 2 MORE losses Mark Richt can afford and stay here you so SATISFIED

I’m the best fund raiser in the business. So long as that is true, I will be here. So long as I remain, Mark Richt will be my football coach. Get used to it.

Thomas Brown aka Brown Eye is a swing shift worker who has nothing in his life at all except these blogs. He will be on here again around 3 pm before he goes to work then again around mid night as he is coming off work. Post his cut and past “stats”, poor mouth UGA and pretend he has one ounce of knowledge of football. The scroll button is used frequently during these times as I just don’t have time for total idiots. Someone already said it. Thomas Brown makes the other Trolls look good.

Guys on ‘Talking SEC Football” on CSS last night with Bob Neal ALL agree that Richt’s future in the hands of the Fla,Au and Tech games. This winning streak is fine and has taken some pressure off, but has really proved little. Dawgs need to beat a good team. The panel agreed he needs to win two of those, and Florida being one of them would be a big plus.

At some point within the next few years if not sooner Chris Peterson will be the new head coach at UGA. He will try and get Grantham to stay.

I do look for Vandy to play us tough for a quarter or so but the pure speed and athletes of our team will pull away, as our D will limit them to 10 or so points.
