Dangerous Vanderbilt team awaits Bulldogs in Nashville

Heading over to Georgia for coach Mark Richt’s weekly press conference and player interviews. Let me know if you have some (reasonable) questions for which you’d like to get answers.

We’re at the halfway point of the season so we’re starting to see some trends statistically and otherwise. The Bulldogs are 4-2 overall and tied for the SEC’s Eastern Division lead with a 3-1 record. They lost to the two best teams they played and then won the next four games they were expected to win in relatively comfortable fashion. So I don’t know if we’re sure just yet how good Georgia is.

The rest of the season sets up well for the Dogs. But don’t discount this next game at Vanderbilt. This is no ordinary Commodores team. They have some offensive issues and are unsettled at quarterback. But they feature some playmakers and are stout on defense, and I think we’ve seen in Georgia just how effective that can be.

In the meantime, we have some questions we need to ask you. . . .

Georgia Tech won’t host Georgia until Nov. 26. But if you’re like us, you can’t help but be looking ahead to that intriguing matchup. Here’s what we want you to do:

Tell us your favorite play in the rivalry and the AJC will try to track down the players involved and tell you what they remember about that game and what they are doing now. Please send an email to Doug Roberson at droberson@ajc.com describing your favorite play in the series and why. Just one per reader, please.

Time for a cogent thought, now. I’m hoping this week is the one where the football gods smile on us and deliver a killer instinct to our coaching staff. It’s that same ability to out a lesser team away on the midst of an otherwise comfortable lead that bears a striking resemblance to those epic 4th quarter drives that allow you to get out of a hole against a superior opponent. Last 2 mind of ARK’s drive against us in 2010, anyone? We need to be able to pull it together and make drives like Mallett’s happen. AM is okay this year, but he’s not great.

But I was reading the comments when some guy from FSU, crying about their own troubles, say’s Richt has the most keen interest in Brantley, for he felt that the Dawgs could beat Gators without Brantley…but could not with him, and he felt that a loss to THIS Gator team would not bode well for Richt. Please ask CMR if he feels as if he has silenced some of the critics from earlier in the season?

After 6 games this team is exactly where I thought they would be 4-2. I thought we would split the first two then stumble against Miss or UT. So at this juncture we are fine.

Marlon Brown will be back in the starting lineup and he caught a key first down pass last week. He is doing well on the short routes. Mitchell will definitely be missed and King must pick up the slack as a deep threat like he was last year. Vandy is physical and had Saban pacing the sideline in the first half last week. It was only 14-0 at the half and Vandy missed two field goals. Georgia’s OL better come to play in the second half this week because Vandy won’t back down.

Reality Check,

I appreciate your being disappointed with the start to the season, but while less than ideal, a 10-0 run to end the season, if it were to happen, would be pretty remarkable. And while our offense is inconsistent, our defense is top 10 in the country. For me, seeing UGA get back to being a defensive football team is very exciting.

TallyDawg

After watching the Vandy/SC game, Vandy’s offense is as bad as their defense is great. I could actually see this being a low scoring game as Richt/Bobo play conservatively to not allow Vandy’s defense to beat them with the idea that Vandy’s offense isn’t a threat to put up more than 13 points. Don’t want to let their defense beat us like South Carolina did. Hopefully, we can put up 21 points in the first half and then cruise the second half. This game could possibly be scarier than it should be. Vandy is great in the red zone. I could see us doubling them in stats but winning close.

Our defense in 2012 and beyond with Grantham is going to be very good.

Our challenge next year is going to be our offensive line

We will be playing a lot of youngsters and we are going to have to sign a couple of JUCO players for depth.

This year’s line will seem like a dream compared to next year.

Lamar Miller- Miami (Fla), RB, Sophomore
Brock Osweiler- Arizona State, QB, Junior

Picking up on what Nick wrote, Crowell does spend a lot of time on the sidelines, especially at times when one would think he should be in there. Why was Samuel even recruited? I’m sure he hasn’t changed his running style since he was at Cass High. Any type of contact sends him to the turf …. perhaps at times, even a blade of grass. Also, coach Richt sounded like he was frustrated with the offense’s second half production Saturday night. I know UGA likes to take a conservative approach when it has a lead, but are the planning on changing that to score more and put the pressure on the opposition?

Vandy is often a more difficult game than we’d expect, and they can’t ever be overlooked, nor can any team.

Especially considering the state of affairs on our offense…

Isn’t it pitiful that we are reduced to being truly concerned about the lowest tier of SEC teams? Even worse, we seem to be so truly excited when we win games against the bottom dwellers, as if these are our real competition.

Perhaps Vandy, MSU, Ole Miss, and the current imitation football team at Tennessee are our real competition! Our team has not been competitive with the SEC title contenders in several years, unless losing to them counts as competition.

Our UGA football program is only a step away from being invited to be the homecoming opponent at Alabama, LSU, and Arkansas. If such opponents are paid to be the sacrificial lamb, it might be an offer our program would accept.

Here’s a question for Coach: Coach, have you heard the rumors that several Top Twenty football programs are trying to lure Mike Bobo away from UGA to be their OC and call their plays?

That should break up the room, but it’s not a bit funny.

You’re not being fair to Samuel. There is a couple thing things you should note. When he hits the secondary in stride he is a bull to take down. His problem has been hitting a hole. Has the holes been open? Samuels is susceptible and easier to tackle at the line or in the backfield. He is a particular type of RB in an offense that isn’t designed for his style. He’s not going to cut, slide or sneak past anyone. He needs a hole and about 4 steps, then he’s trouble. If he doesn’t get it, well you see the result. The blame on his ineffectiveness isn’t necessarily his

“What everyone must do at a halfway point — it’s just like the halfway point of a project the halfway point of anything you do — it’s how you finish that really is the key thing that everyone has to focus on right now,” McGarity said. “Once you think you might have it figured out or you may rest on your laurels so to speak, that’s when you have problems. The message that we need to have and the message that everyone needs to have is that each week gets bigger and bigger. To get to certain levels, you have to work that much harder.”

“Obviously you’re winning the games that really you need to win,” McGarity said. “At the same time, those teams have really struggled. I don’t know if there’s a (conference) win among them. You’ve got to keep things in perspective because there are some big tests coming up.”

These are quotes made by McGarity in todays edition of the athens banner herald. What I glean from thses comments is that McGarity still isn’t sold on this team and it’s to early for the Richt pollyanna’s to celebrate.

Let’s be honest here people, Vanderbilt is not a “dangerous” team. UGA does not need to take them lightly but that hardly has to do with Vandy being “dangerous”. It’s a road SEC game with a UGA team that is relatively inexperienced at many positions yet is showing some promise. This is a fragile team that does not needs to take every game seriously and continue to improve each week. USC had how many turnovers, 4 or 5, and they still destroyed Vandy. No Vandy is not “dangerous”. This should be a blowout if UGA comes prepared.

Vandy is struggling on offense and has changed QB’s. That will give them new hope and optimism. They also have a new coach who appears to have a nice plan in place and has made some recruiting in-roads.

If our defense continues its play and we don’t turn the ball over, we should win by 3 TD’s. Bama was up 7-0 late in the 1st half and eventually just wore them down.

If the Dawgs played in the West this year or had Florida’s SEC schedule, they would end the year with at least four losses, maybe five-six, given the greater likelihood of injuries, questions about depth at key positions, and poor morale given the past four seasons.

The Bulldogs continue to have issues with players quitting; 14 that were on this roster at the end of 2010 are gone early, with only

Will we see the FB used more or maybe..just maybe see Jenkins in some ole “fridge” running plays on short yardage? Can Figgins handle the ball? or what reason do we never see any FB with the ball? imagine on 3 and goal on the 3 jenkins as FB and Figgins carrying the rock…How could you stop that??
Also will we see CMR calling more plays after the recent comments about “wishing we’d been more agressive” ? GO DAWGS!!!

We need to be fair. We jump on Tech for having beat no one…..Here’s a clue….we ain’t either. Georgia Football to me is beating good teams and making the news. We’ve done neither. I’m encouraged by the defense, but we are a long way from being a good ball club. We have not beat a ranked team since the 2009 season. And if we don’t beat Florida this year, we might as well take them off the schedule and end the misery.

Just my opinion but Cornelius Washington should be suspended for the rest of the season for the DUI and besides he was consistently taking himself out of plays and taking plays off. This past weekend was actually a big improvement over him being in the games anyway.

My only question to Coach Richt is why is Richard Samuel still a running back, he is hurting this kids future and also his team’s by having him at running back? They should be able to see that Samuel is not a running back.

Everyone that knows anything about college football is aware that Georgia should win. But if ever there was a “trap” game this could be it. The Bulldogs are coming off an emotinal win with Florida looming. I can assure you Vanderbilt will be playing hard. This is a big game for the Commodores’ season right now. Unlike most teams Georgia has on its team bus the talent to beat any team in the country. So it’s a toss up between two crowds:

1. The crowd that says UGA has had an easy schedule thus far and relatively easy the rest of the way out. Usually Tech fans who are trying to justify their own pitiful schedule.

2. The crowd that comes on here ALL THE TIME and says “UGA will lose to MSU”, or “UGA will get beat by UT in Knoxville”, or this week, “a much tougher Vandy team than expected will beat the dogs. Then after UGA wins that particular game, their tone changes to “well MSU is a really weak team” or “the Vols have no talent anyway”, or my favorite come Monday will be “it’s still just Vandy”.
These are some Tech trolls and all the other trolls from different teams (aside from a few with class).

Even with a weak schedule this year for UGA, I would still put that strength of schedule over ANY ACC schedule. FSU looked good to start the year but has fallen to the same fate that UF did losing their starting QB.

Clemson looks pretty good and I think will be the ACC team that will beat Tech. Vtech doesn’t look good at all. What’s left? Miami, Virginia and Duke. I would put Ole Miss up on Virginia, Duke and Maryland .. maybe even Miami and NC State.

Bama in Atlanta

October 11th, 2011
2:50 pm

@ truedawg

Regarding LSU, first I just hope we have everyone healthy for that game because we’re going to need to shoot with both barrels. I can certainly see this as a low scoring game because both defenses are stingy with yardage. That said, it could easily come down to special teams or the dangerous turnover or the infamous fake punt/field goal or on-side kick.

What bothers me about Bama is that in most games so far we have started slow but made up for it in the second half. Not sure if we can get away with that against the striped cats.

As far as QBs, I’m pleased with the way AJ has stepped up to claim the starting position but he still has some maturing to do. Did you see the TD pass against Vandy when we were on the six yard line and he threw it to the back of the end zone in heavy traffic when he could have just walked it in?!? You could read Saban’s lips saying “Why didn’t you just run it in?” when he came to the sidelines.

I think we would have a better chance against Jarrett Lee rather than Jefferson because we have a tendancy to either rush the outside and leave the middle to scramble or vice versa….so we have a tougher time against a good scrambling QB. Richardson/Lacy need to establish a run game so that it can open up some passing lanes for AJ.

That’s my opinion but looking forward to Nov 5th. I think I may head down to T-Town and set up a defibrillator and Advil stand to add to my son’s college fund!

Hey Thomas Brown:

I read the article and I do have to say this about our beginning rankings on defense and where we are ranked now: Don’t most people schedule weak teams to start the season? Can you name anyone who had a tougher first two games? Of the 45 we gave up to USCe, how many were from the USCe offense?

There are three kinds of lies that exist:
1) Lies
2) Damn Lies
3) Statistical Lies

That hater has posted #3 Statistical Lies.

UGA is right on track for where most fans thought they would be from the beginning of the season. We thought we would split the first two, but also thought we would stumble at some other point before the UF game. We didn’t split but we haven’t stumbled against weaker teams. We played down to our opponents the last few years, but we now just play our brand of football.

The only game we played like crap was BSU, and I was disgusted after that game with all the off season chatter. I think the best case would be us playing BSU in a bowl game to see if we really did improve throughout the season or was just an incredibly weak SEC schedule.

PS Who in their right mind is going to call ANY sec schedule weak? Answer: Tech Trolls. Anybody that plays in this conference respects a one loss conference team.

It seems like Aaron Murray would have learned after teh 2nd of the 3 long balls to Tavareous King and thrown a little shorter. He threw like he was throwing to Mitchel who apparently has a little extra burst that he can spare on long balls. King is fast, but he is burning full speed and has nothing extra to be able to reach out or get an extra short jolt of speed.

Murray blew at least the last 2 of those throws, maybe all of them, sense he should know what TK is capable of from practice.

Come on Murray, step up. I wonder if Mason would have missed all those throws?

Samuel actually has some unique value as a RB but, as we have witnessed all too often, we maybe aren’t coaching and using players to their strengths. I was at that game against Arkansas when Samuel broke that run. He is an open field runner and he won’t/can’t fake anyone out but with his legs moving to some tempo he will run over them. He he much tougher to drag down in the secondary. If they don’t open him a hole he is useless. I don’t see that as his fault. It’s the kind of runner he is.

Yes, UGA on this ranking fell behind GT. But certainly not so much that your story would have any merit to it. And as for the athletes, if GT is so academically minded to only go after the brightest athletes, how come they can’t have higher graduation rates?

Guarantee there is no truth to any of that post. When posts come on here talking about UGA being “redneck”, it begs the question as to why. Is it because of the location, Athens, GA? If so, what of any affluent value is located around GT? The Varsity?

I love UGA and it is an honor to win the SEC East, but do we really want to? I hope we continue to improve and can match up to either LSU or Alabama, but man they are machines this year. Between Florida, SC and us, we have the best chance to make a game of it, but I fear the east is in for a shellacking in that game.

I hope I am wrong. I will be cheering myself horse, but I really don’t want to have our team run out of town. With tree and Washington back with some warm up time before the championship, maybe we will have a pleasant surprise. I don’t see SC having a prayer. They will be beat by 30 points.

Nate, Obviously the national writer feels that we have played 4 cupcakes in a row, Vandie is # 5. After all that, we have 2 Losses and 4 wins. We should have beat South Carolina. We can thank Aaron Murray for that, as we can the Florida Loss last year, for example as well – directly.

We are not very good. Very good is when you BEAT good teams. We have not. What our own Athletic Director, Mr. Greg McGarity, said last night was exactly what the national writers URL Link above says : ““those teams have really struggled. I don’t know if there’s a (conference) win among them. You’ve got to keep things in perspective”

I would like nothing more than for UGA to be very good. We aren’t. We haven’t been. We are not going to be. We are what we are. We are not Alabama, not LSU, not even Auburn, certainly not South Carolina, not Arkansas. So, what are we ? Somewhere in the bottom half of The SEC, right ?

The vols are not any good. Ole Miss stinks. Missy State is the biggest flop of The entire SEC. Vandie is Vandie and Coastal Carolina is not even 1-A. We have all kinds of issues on Offense. We have Lost 29 players who Mark Richt gave scholarships to to play this season, who will not play Saturday vs Vandie.

Seniors 22, Juniors 25. The top juniors are gone after this season – that would be like Orson Charles, maybe Christian Robinson, maybe Michael Gilliard, Brandon Smith even maybe – guys like that. All the seniors are gone after this season – that would be Cordy Glenn, Ben Jones, Justin Anderson, Aron White, Bruce Figgins, Trinton Sturdivant, Drew Butler, Brandon Boykin, Israel Troupe, and Blair Walsh. NOT INSIGNIFICANT PLAYERS we lose. We are NOT YOUNG. We have NOT done much with these Juniors and Seniors – putting up a won/lost record of # 27 best in the nation after 2005 and we are in The SEC East after 2005 a miserable 14-13. I am sorry. Now, did you have some excuse for all this Nate ? Pardon me for being insensitive, but there isn’t any excuse for it Nate.

We will really miss Ben Jones and Glenn. Dallas Lee is as good as Anderson. Jay Rome is waiting in the wings to fill Aron White’s gap. Figgins is a great blocker but I am not sure he will be all that missed. Sturdivant hasn’t played a down in years. Butler will be missed but at this point I am convined Bogotay trumps Walsh. Boykin will be missed for sure. Israel Troupe?? C’mon man.

What is your point Thomas Brown? It’s the same tired old crap every single day. And most of it is just insignificant ramblings. You keep wanting to blame the UF loss last year on Murray because of the pic in OT. Guess what genius. Without Murray, there may not have even been an OT. The D let us down in that game too, no mention of that. The running game was mediocre at best. No mention of that. Instead, your lack of football knowledge leads you to blame the entire game on one guy, a freshman at that.

Your crap about all the scholarships past out to players not playing is hysterical. Players getting injured, players leaving due to being low on the depth chart, players leaving because of academic and legal issues; no, this happens no where else in the nation. Actually, it happens EVERYWHERE else in the nation, you just don’t do that research. Face it, you aren’t a real fan, you just copy and paste the same old crap and try to spin it for your argument.

You keep ranting about 22 Seniors and 25 Juniors showing we are not a young team. If you would pull your numbers from the actual depth chart, you may see why people say that. On the offensive side of the depth chart, 31 players are listed, 18 are freshman or sophomores. On defense, 25 listed with 12 being either freshman or sophomores. The important part of this is that many of those, like Crowell, Mitchell, Herrera, Geathers and Murray are starters. Jenkins lists as a junior but he is in his first year out of JuCo.

Of the players you mentioned, we have replacements already for White (Drew), Figgins (Ogletree) and the lineman. Sturdivant hasn’t been a factor in a while, Butler and Walsh are tough to replace no matter what you do as well as Boykin. But Israel Troup? Come on dude. Hasn’t proven anything to anyone.

Hurts when you cannot say we are young. And anyway, we have the 29 who are not so funny to the coaching staff who are not playing this season, who they gave Scholarships to to do just that. Perhaps our 14-13 vs SEC East after 2005 explains where we are best. Certainly, we haven’t beat 1 good team in so long that ended the season in the AP Poll Top 10. That was 2006 when we LOST 4 games but beat # 9 Auburn. 2006 was Six (6) seasons ago.

I know. I should be happy. You are. Hey we won 4 games in a row and 3 of them SEC teams. Now we get another SEC team. Obviously we beat them. I was the 1 poster who predicted 11-3 this season and said that if we did, we would not have beat a single good team. Guess what ? I’m as right as rain on that, too. TampaDawg, is that you ? You who said yesterday in here that everyone said we would lose to the vols with no running game no defense no special teams and no talent.

Actually, I said MANY on here said we would lose to UT, and many on here said we would lose to MSU. Then they come on here afterwards and claim that we won just because those teams sucked. Let the season play out. I have said that since the beginning. I predicted 10-2 regular season. They do that, say the lose the SEC title game, then win the bowl game and we are both right.

Thomas Brown

There is only 1 way to recover from this season. It is to beat Alabama or LSU or Arkansas. LSU has beat the better teams. Would have been nice to be Florida these 2 weeks and play both back-to-back. Otherwise, without a win over them, winning The SEC East is PUNISHMENT.

Except for the DISNEYdawgs.com who get to say we won The SEC East.

I don’t think you are happy with this football program TampaDawg. I don’t think you can say that we beat the top teams, that we don’t lose to cupcakes and that we have not wasted talent.

I also do not think you are happy with our offense, its coaches, or how some of our offense acts. I think you think we aren’t where you expected us to be in year 11.

TampaDawg

October 11th, 2011
4:52 pm

I pick on you? Not really. I just think you are way too unfairly judging parts of this team. You talk like Aaron Murray should be a one man show, especially last year as a freshman. You criticize way too much for the last 2 years instead of looking at the entire body of work for CMR which by most anyone’s measure are really good. The team went into transition after losing NFL first rounders Stafford and Moreno added that to losing a really good WR in Massaquoi. It happens.

But blaming CMR for the 29 scholarships doesn’t make sense. The ones that were kicked off, we don’t want them on here. We don’t need players bringing a team down off the field. Plus, we still have 85 on scholarship as has been reported several times.. I have nothing against you Thomas Brown, but I think you are way too critical at this point. True fans should let the season play out, and cheer like crazy for this team with so many young stars getting playing time.

TampaDawg

This team is getting better and better each week. This time last year, they were 2-4, now 4-2 and beating teams we should. Can’t say that last year. Improvement is what you should look for. Not many teams go from 6-7 to dominating the nation. And no Tech fans, you are not dominating the nation, you’re dominating Class 5A high school teams.
