Heading over to Georgia for coach Mark Richt’s weekly press conference and player interviews. Let me know if you have some (reasonable) questions for which you’d like to get answers.
We’re at the halfway point of the season so we’re starting to see some trends statistically and otherwise. The Bulldogs are 4-2 overall and tied for the SEC’s Eastern Division lead with a 3-1 record. They lost to the two best teams they played and then won the next four games they were expected to win in relatively comfortable fashion. So I don’t know if we’re sure just yet how good Georgia is.
The rest of the season sets up well for the Dogs. But don’t discount this next game at Vanderbilt. This is no ordinary Commodores team. They have some offensive issues and are unsettled at quarterback. But they feature some playmakers and are stout on defense, and I think we’ve seen in Georgia just how effective that can be.
In the meantime, we have some questions we need to ask you. . . .
Georgia Tech won’t host Georgia until Nov. 26. But if you’re like us, you can’t help but be looking ahead to that intriguing matchup. Here’s what we want you to do:
Tell us your favorite play in the rivalry and the AJC will try to track down the players involved and tell you what they remember about that game and what they are doing now. Please send an email to Doug Roberson at droberson@ajc.com describing your favorite play in the series and why. Just one per reader, please.

My favorite play was the opening play in 1981.
“1981 Georgia Tech game in Atlanta. It was a 44-7 blowout.
We hit an 80 yard TD pass on our first play of the game. The play was
called “69″, which was a play-action go route and Lindsay Scott just ran
by the Jacket cornerback for an easy score.” – Buck Belue

I wouldn’t call the South Carolina loss bad luck, but I would say that UGA outplayed them in most facets of the game and that Georgia made 3-4 critical mistakes that cost them the game. UGA shot itself in the foot, but it is still an L and South Carolina controls their own destiny.
I think we are better than last year, but we don’t know how much better quite yet. We have beaten 3 flawed teams (I don’t recognize Coastal Carolina as a win). It is better to have beaten Ole Miss, Miss St. and Tenn than to have lost any of those games. All you can do is beat the opponent that you are playing. The defense should give us a chance in just about every game from here on out.

Regarding LSU, first I just hope we have everyone healthy for that game because we’re going to need to shoot with both barrels. I can certainly see this as a low scoring game because both defenses are stingy with yardage. That said, it could easily come down to special teams or the dangerous turnover or the infamous fake punt/field goal or on-side kick.
What bothers me about Bama is that in most games so far we have started slow but made up for it in the second half. Not sure if we can get away with that against the striped cats.
As far as QBs, I’m pleased with the way AJ has stepped up to claim the starting position but he still has some maturing to do. Did you see the TD pass against Vandy when we were on the six yard line and he threw it to the back of the end zone in heavy traffic when he could have just walked it in?!? You could read Saban’s lips saying “Why didn’t you just run it in?” when he came to the sidelines.
I think we would have a better chance against Jarrett Lee rather than Jefferson because we have a tendancy to either rush the outside and leave the middle to scramble or vice versa….so we have a tougher time against a good scrambling QB. Richardson/Lacy need to establish a run game so that it can open up some passing lanes for AJ.
That’s my opinion but looking forward to Nov 5th. I think I may head down to T-Town and set up a defibrillator and Advil stand to add to my son’s college fund!

Hey Thomas Brown:
I read the article and I do have to say this about our beginning rankings on defense and where we are ranked now: Don’t most people schedule weak teams to start the season? Can you name anyone who had a tougher first two games? Of the 45 we gave up to USCe, how many were from the USCe offense?
There are three kinds of lies that exist:
1) Lies
2) Damn Lies
3) Statistical Lies
That hater has posted #3 Statistical Lies.
UGA is right on track for where most fans thought they would be from the beginning of the season. We thought we would split the first two, but also thought we would stumble at some other point before the UF game. We didn’t split but we haven’t stumbled against weaker teams. We played down to our opponents the last few years, but we now just play our brand of football.
The only game we played like crap was BSU, and I was disgusted after that game with all the off season chatter. I think the best case would be us playing BSU in a bowl game to see if we really did improve throughout the season or was just an incredibly weak SEC schedule.
PS Who in their right mind is going to call ANY sec schedule weak? Answer: Tech Trolls. Anybody that plays in this conference respects a one loss conference team.

Richard Samuel has one of the top 10 longest running Touchdowns in UGA history. I was surprised when I saw that. Put him and Crowell in the backfield so that the D watches Crowell, then run Samuel up the middle or sweeped in the opposite direction.

It seems like Aaron Murray would have learned after teh 2nd of the 3 long balls to Tavareous King and thrown a little shorter. He threw like he was throwing to Mitchel who apparently has a little extra burst that he can spare on long balls. King is fast, but he is burning full speed and has nothing extra to be able to reach out or get an extra short jolt of speed.
Murray blew at least the last 2 of those throws, maybe all of them, sense he should know what TK is capable of from practice.
Come on Murray, step up. I wonder if Mason would have missed all those throws?

Samuel actually has some unique value as a RB but, as we have witnessed all too often, we maybe aren’t coaching and using players to their strengths. I was at that game against Arkansas when Samuel broke that run. He is an open field runner and he won’t/can’t fake anyone out but with his legs moving to some tempo he will run over them. He he much tougher to drag down in the secondary. If they don’t open him a hole he is useless. I don’t see that as his fault. It’s the kind of runner he is.

Yes, UGA on this ranking fell behind GT. But certainly not so much that your story would have any merit to it. And as for the athletes, if GT is so academically minded to only go after the brightest athletes, how come they can’t have higher graduation rates?

I love UGA and it is an honor to win the SEC East, but do we really want to? I hope we continue to improve and can match up to either LSU or Alabama, but man they are machines this year. Between Florida, SC and us, we have the best chance to make a game of it, but I fear the east is in for a shellacking in that game.
I hope I am wrong. I will be cheering myself horse, but I really don’t want to have our team run out of town. With tree and Washington back with some warm up time before the championship, maybe we will have a pleasant surprise. I don’t see SC having a prayer. They will be beat by 30 points.

Nate, Obviously the national writer feels that we have played 4 cupcakes in a row, Vandie is # 5. After all that, we have 2 Losses and 4 wins. We should have beat South Carolina. We can thank Aaron Murray for that, as we can the Florida Loss last year, for example as well – directly.
We are not very good. Very good is when you BEAT good teams. We have not. What our own Athletic Director, Mr. Greg McGarity, said last night was exactly what the national writers URL Link above says : ““those teams have really struggled. I don’t know if there’s a (conference) win among them. You’ve got to keep things in perspective”
I would like nothing more than for UGA to be very good. We aren’t. We haven’t been. We are not going to be. We are what we are. We are not Alabama, not LSU, not even Auburn, certainly not South Carolina, not Arkansas. So, what are we ? Somewhere in the bottom half of The SEC, right ?
The vols are not any good. Ole Miss stinks. Missy State is the biggest flop of The entire SEC. Vandie is Vandie and Coastal Carolina is not even 1-A. We have all kinds of issues on Offense. We have Lost 29 players who Mark Richt gave scholarships to to play this season, who will not play Saturday vs Vandie.
Seniors 22, Juniors 25. The top juniors are gone after this season – that would be like Orson Charles, maybe Christian Robinson, maybe Michael Gilliard, Brandon Smith even maybe – guys like that. All the seniors are gone after this season – that would be Cordy Glenn, Ben Jones, Justin Anderson, Aron White, Bruce Figgins, Trinton Sturdivant, Drew Butler, Brandon Boykin, Israel Troupe, and Blair Walsh. NOT INSIGNIFICANT PLAYERS we lose. We are NOT YOUNG. We have NOT done much with these Juniors and Seniors – putting up a won/lost record of # 27 best in the nation after 2005 and we are in The SEC East after 2005 a miserable 14-13. I am sorry. Now, did you have some excuse for all this Nate ? Pardon me for being insensitive, but there isn’t any excuse for it Nate.

We will really miss Ben Jones and Glenn. Dallas Lee is as good as Anderson. Jay Rome is waiting in the wings to fill Aron White’s gap. Figgins is a great blocker but I am not sure he will be all that missed. Sturdivant hasn’t played a down in years. Butler will be missed but at this point I am convined Bogotay trumps Walsh. Boykin will be missed for sure. Israel Troupe?? C’mon man.

What is your point Thomas Brown? It’s the same tired old crap every single day. And most of it is just insignificant ramblings. You keep wanting to blame the UF loss last year on Murray because of the pic in OT. Guess what genius. Without Murray, there may not have even been an OT. The D let us down in that game too, no mention of that. The running game was mediocre at best. No mention of that. Instead, your lack of football knowledge leads you to blame the entire game on one guy, a freshman at that.
Your crap about all the scholarships past out to players not playing is hysterical. Players getting injured, players leaving due to being low on the depth chart, players leaving because of academic and legal issues; no, this happens no where else in the nation. Actually, it happens EVERYWHERE else in the nation, you just don’t do that research. Face it, you aren’t a real fan, you just copy and paste the same old crap and try to spin it for your argument.
You keep ranting about 22 Seniors and 25 Juniors showing we are not a young team. If you would pull your numbers from the actual depth chart, you may see why people say that. On the offensive side of the depth chart, 31 players are listed, 18 are freshman or sophomores. On defense, 25 listed with 12 being either freshman or sophomores. The important part of this is that many of those, like Crowell, Mitchell, Herrera, Geathers and Murray are starters. Jenkins lists as a junior but he is in his first year out of JuCo.
Of the players you mentioned, we have replacements already for White (Drew), Figgins (Ogletree) and the lineman. Sturdivant hasn’t been a factor in a while, Butler and Walsh are tough to replace no matter what you do as well as Boykin. But Israel Troup? Come on dude. Hasn’t proven anything to anyone.

Hurts when you cannot say we are young. And anyway, we have the 29 who are not so funny to the coaching staff who are not playing this season, who they gave Scholarships to to do just that. Perhaps our 14-13 vs SEC East after 2005 explains where we are best. Certainly, we haven’t beat 1 good team in so long that ended the season in the AP Poll Top 10. That was 2006 when we LOST 4 games but beat # 9 Auburn. 2006 was Six (6) seasons ago.
I know. I should be happy. You are. Hey we won 4 games in a row and 3 of them SEC teams. Now we get another SEC team. Obviously we beat them. I was the 1 poster who predicted 11-3 this season and said that if we did, we would not have beat a single good team. Guess what ? I’m as right as rain on that, too. TampaDawg, is that you ? There is only 1 way to recover from this season. It is to beat Alabama or LSU or Arkansas. LSU has beat the better teams. Would have been nice to be Florida these 2 weeks and play both back-to-back. Otherwise, without a win over them, winning The SEC East is PUNISHMENT.

I pick on you? Not really. I just think you are way too unfairly judging parts of this team. You talk like Aaron Murray should be a one man show, especially last year as a freshman. You criticize way too much for the last 2 years instead of looking at the entire body of work for CMR which by most anyone’s measure are really good. The team went into transition after losing NFL first rounders Stafford and Moreno added that to losing a really good WR in Massaquoi. It happens.
But blaming CMR for the 29 scholarships doesn’t make sense. The ones that were kicked off, we don’t want them on here. We don’t need players bringing a team down off the field. Plus, we still have 85 on scholarship as has been reported several times.. I have nothing against you Thomas Brown, but I think you are way too critical at this point. True fans should let the season play out, and cheer like crazy for this team with so many young stars getting playing time.
