Dangerous Vanderbilt team awaits Bulldogs in Nashville

Heading over to Georgia for coach Mark Richt’s weekly press conference and player interviews. Let me know if you have some (reasonable) questions for which you’d like to get answers.

We’re at the halfway point of the season so we’re starting to see some trends statistically and otherwise. The Bulldogs are 4-2 overall and tied for the SEC’s Eastern Division lead with a 3-1 record. They lost to the two best teams they played and then won the next four games they were expected to win in relatively comfortable fashion. So I don’t know if we’re sure just yet how good Georgia is.

The rest of the season sets up well for the Dogs. But don’t discount this next game at Vanderbilt. This is no ordinary Commodores team. They have some offensive issues and are unsettled at quarterback. But they feature some playmakers and are stout on defense, and I think we’ve seen in Georgia just how effective that can be.

In the meantime, we have some questions we need to ask you. . . .

Georgia Tech won’t host Georgia until Nov. 26. But if you’re like us, you can’t help but be looking ahead to that intriguing matchup. Here’s what we want you to do:

Tell us your favorite play in the rivalry and the AJC will try to track down the players involved and tell you what they remember about that game and what they are doing now. Please send an email to Doug Roberson at droberson@ajc.com describing your favorite play in the series and why. Just one per reader, please.

Let’s take care of fl and Au, then worry about GT. Ask Greg McGarrity if he can move the GT game to the first game of the season. Maybe Johnson would like a fish fry in Sept.

What year was the big fight in Bobby Dodd stadium ?

I’m pretty sure it was in the 90’s.

Time for a cogent thought, now. I’m hoping this week is the one where the football gods smile on us and deliver a killer instinct to our coaching staff. It’s that same ability to out a lesser team away on the midst of an otherwise comfortable lead that bears a striking resemblance to those epic 4th quarter drives that allow you to get out of a hole against a superior opponent. Last 2 mind of ARK’s drive against us in 2010, anyone? We need to be able to pull it together and make drives like Mallett’s happen. AM is okay this year, but he’s not great.

coachx: I think it might have been ‘94 or possibly ‘93. It was while Ray Goff was head coach and not 1995 because that was the game in which Goff already had been dismissed.

Will Richt consider playing Hutson Mason some in this game?

Please find out what Reggie Ball is up to, you pick the memorable play he made from helping UGA to 4 consecutive victories. I would prefer maybe discussing his ‘concussion’ from his freshman year.

The Dogs are Not very good just lucky to play a season in which they only play 2 ranked teams. Lost to both then look better against lesser teams. Make it to the dome only to be blown out!

Are we likely to ever see a reverse to Nick Marshall and let him throw it downfield? He was a very good HS QB! Are we ever likely to see Big John Jenkins come in at FB on 4th and short? He has played some FB and would be a good fit in that situation. Just want to see a little more creativity with the offensive talent we have. GO DAWGS!!

I’m pleased with the vote of confidence we saw CMR give the kids with all of the 4th down conversions vs UT. My line of thinking has been that when you have a RB averaging 7 yds/carry, then 4th & 3 should be a foregone conclusion.

Born2Bark- Exactly!! That’s why he chose to wear a 6 on his chest, to be able to be in the backfield. Also, where IS Nick Marshall? Also, we know that Kenny Malcome changed his mind on leaving, but is he playing that bad , that even CB Brandon Smith gets the nod in front of him?…’Tree will be back for the Florida game, as well as Washington. Go Dawgs!

After the two losses to start the year, the naysayers were out in force…they did not think UGA could possibly beat MSU or UT. You know it and they do to.

Fact is UGA is a young team that is going to get better.

I’m officially overlooking Vandy.

Interesting article on Rivals this AM about Gators and no Brantley again this week and the truer test for Gators will be this week playing Auburn as LSU and Bama will beat most they play and kill weak teams. But I was reading the comments when some guy from FSU, crying about their own troubles, say’s Richt has the most keen interest in Brantley, for he felt that the Dawgs could beat Gators without Brantley…but could not with him, and he felt that a loss to THIS Gator team would not bode well for Richt. Interesting what outsiders see happening in Athens.

Once again Tube Alloys (not your real handle – and why not?) and Dogs Smell grace us with their usual crap…pleeeeeaaaaassssseeee enlighten us some more with your wisdom…like I have said so many times before, I guess the technerds should be bitter because, year-in and year-out, they get b*slapped by the owners of this state. Oh, but wait – they are undefeated against paper teams (unranked, etc)

Oh how I love it when the technerds live vicariously through us!!

Tree wil be back for the UF game. He is already starting to get into the “mix” at practice. Probably could play this week but Gilliard is doing a great job and it’s going to be hard to keep him off the field. Good problem to have for Grantham who I think deserves more credit than CMR gives.

Why does Crowell leave the game so much? Toughness issue? Also he seems to get worse as the games progress, not better like a good quality running back should.

Why do you relentlessly hand the ball off to Richard Samuel???

Nick, as an outsider that doesn’t cheer for UGA, it appears that Crowell is not in shape to play football. Seems he still has on his high school baby fat and thought he could get away with it in the SEC…its going to take an off season for him to get in the proper shape needed to perform the way he needs/should.

Chip,

Please ask CMR if he feels as if he has silenced some of the critics from earlier in the season?

After 6 games this team is exactly where I thought they would be 4-2. I thought we would split the first two then stumble against Miss or UT. So at this juncture we are fine.

Great job by CMR for righting the ship on a season that could have spiraled downward in a hurry after the USCe game.

Reality Check

October 11th, 2011
11:04 am

Anyone else like me who even if UGA wins out will not be totally satisfied with the season. UF is average, Auburn is average and GT would be the only win that UGA might not be favored against. The only real tests were flunked in the first two games. I am not convinced the Dawgs are any closer to winning a game against the big boys now than when the season started.

Marlon Brown will be back in the starting lineup and he caught a key first down pass last week. He is doing well on the short routes. Mitchell will definitely be missed and King must pick up the slack as a deep threat like he was last year. Vandy is physical and had Saban pacing the sideline in the first half last week. It was only 14-0 at the half and Vandy missed two field goals. Georgia’s OL better come to play in the second half this week because Vandy won’t back down.

Theron Sapp is still alive, ask him about ending the drought.

Ask Jimmy the Greek Poulos about his last minute TD in 73 on Thanksgiving night.

Of course need to hear from Jasper Sanks on the fumble that wasn’t. Thank goodness for instant replay may have cost us that game, but it saved us the other night against Tennessee.

Any interviews with Reggie Ball, Calvin Johnson, Keith Brookings on how it feels to have never beaten Georgia.

Reality Check, what was your prediction of how the season would play out before it started? I said 9-3, and I still say that. If it’s less than 9-3, then I would be disappointed. Not taking into account a possible SCG or the bowl game right now.

Reality Check,

I appreciate your being disappointed with the start to the season, but while less than ideal, a 10-0 run to end the season, if it were to happen, would be pretty remarkable. And while our offense is inconsistent, our defense is top 10 in the country. For me, seeing UGA get back to being a defensive football team is very exciting.

DC,

I take your point, but UGA still dominated SC on both sides of the ball.

we still don’t know how good we are BUT..i have seen a steady amd marked improvement every week in the defense

offense we are still lpatchwork on the O-Line but at least we are getting the ball into our playmakers hands and that differs greatly from the previous season

Question-didn’t see much of B. Figgins last week or was i missing something?

Branden Smith vs. Boykin on Offense–was Boykin too banged up or was it a #1 thing?
