Two Georgia players received honors from the SEC today for their performances in Saturday’s victory at Tennessee.
Inside linebacker Mike Gilliard was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week after a huge game in which he had a career-high 12 tackles, as well as a sack (for minus 14 yards), 2.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble, two quarterback hurries and a pass breakup.
It was the latest in a series of strong performances by Gilliard, who stepped up in the wake of injuries to inside linebackers Alec Ogletree and Christian Robinson. Gilliard, a junior, has led the Bulldogs in tackles for the past four games.
Placekicker Blair Walsh was named the SEC’s Special Teams Player of the Week after making both of his field-goal attempts at Tennessee. His 35- and 23-yard field goals accounted for all of Georgia’s scoring in the first half, which ended in a 6-6 tie.
The game was a bounce-back performance for Walsh, who missed six of 12 field-goal attempts in this season’s first five games after missing just five of 45 over the two previous seasons. He is the SEC’s active career leader with 63 field goals, the eighth most in league history.
In addition to the SEC honor, Gilliard also was named the College Football Performance Awards’ National Linebacker of the Week.

Following the Jan Kemp trial, the UGA president, Dr. Fred C. Davison, resigned in disgrace in March 1986. The board of regents of the University System of Georgia issued a report in April condemning Dr. Davison and Vince Dooley, in a pattern of academic abuse in the admission and advancement of student-athletes.

GADAWG13…I do not actually believe that UT should have won the game. For you to think so is a complete misunderstanding of my post.
Your response, however, is my point. When you talk about how UGA made mistakes in the USC game….is it not just a tiny bit possible that USC players had something to do with those plays? Is it completely outside the realm of possibility that the USC defensive back studied film, recognized the play, and stepped in front of Murray’s pass and made a great play to score the TD? (just one example).
You see, hear is the real point I was trying to make. EVERY teams’ fans could do the same thing…even in Saturday’s UGA/UT game. What is unfair, is that some UGA fans want to do it, then call others idiots when they do.

Vanderbilt will most likely lose, but consider that – like Georgia Tech and a few other southeastern schools – Vandy will field a team of scholar-athletes, unlike the gang of academically challenged dummies from UGA. What an embarrassment.

Way to go Gilliard! Way to step up Dawgs! Getting some guys back soon and there will be some depth as a result. Go Dawgs! You guys are doing great getting through this most difficult season brought on by media hype. The real and not young and ignorant fans knew everything was going to be fine. You guys have great coaches and we are glad you all wanted to come ti UGA. Thanks for working hard! Keep it up and you just might find yourself in the SEC title game THIS year. Not to mention the next few! Focus on Vandy. Do not let them score ONE POINT! SC WILL LOSE ANOTHER SEC GAME…..Maybe more than one!

@GADAWG13…
There will be a game, this year or next, where I promise that you and some of your UGA brethren will come on this site and explain how UGA should have won a game that you lost. You will talk about mistakes that UGA made, and how it would have changed the score.
When you do, you will remember the blog conversation that we have had today. You won’t admit it, I probably won’t be around to call you out on it, and it won’t stop you from acting the fool….but you will remember none the less.

If it’s this one:
“Point is, if you are going to call questionable PIs, then do it to both teams.”
Now that’s a point of twaddle! Would make for some interestingly unfair football, I expect. …..
Point is, why would you want to have any questionable PIs?

I am excited about UGA, but I believe we are one year away. If I am not mistken Clemson is in next years schedule, that will be one humdinger of a game both teams are young. Oh well let the dogs take care of business and win out. That sounds like a whole bunch of fun. Whip the Gators, Auburn and Tech what a great way to finish what started off a bad year. Some of you guys are going to think I am half asleep. Go Dogs.

St. Simon’s Daddy…I’m not sure that you did read the entire blod conversation.
I was saying that TN made mistakes, and that if not for those, TN might have won (just like UGA fans say about the USC game). GADAWG13 said that I was basically nuts for saying it. Your “ifs buts and maybes” post is similar.
My point was, if UGA fans can do it, then fans of other teams can do the same thing.

I don’t see any advantage to UGA in doing that.
On paper it seems pausable, but in reality; not so much.
Alec has the potential to go pro after three years.
This is his second year.
He could go pro after next season.
Giving him a MRS would likely hurt us for the games he could play this year.
I think that’s correct. Others may say it better.

@JAWJeRDAWG no I think your right on the money about Tree. I don’t think when he comes back he will be able to do more than spot duty for a while as he is not in game shape I’m sure..but he could be a force in the UF ,Auburn and Bug games.even if only for 10-15 plays.

I agree with the other posters that brought up the Valdosta/Lowndes game. Also one of the best games I have ever witnessed. With that said, I hope that we continue to heavily recruit in south GA. A lot of talent in that area of the state. I think that Coach Gillespie is in the process of returning Valdosta to its glory days, he’s a great coach. Now onto the Dawgs…I was really impressed with the D on Sat. The O has got to keep the momentum going from the 1st half to the 2nd. The guys seem to tire out in the 2nd half and do not pull away from their opponent as they should. If the O can keep it going for 4 quarters then I feel confident that winning out is feasible. If they ontinue to make stupid penalties and fall asleep in the 2nd half, it will come back to haunt in a big way. GO DAWGS!!!
