Barbara Dooley
Don’t mess with Mama’s baby boy.
That was the basic message Barbara Dooley delivered to Knoxville sportswriters Andrew Gribble and Dave Hooker and radio listeners who were tuning into “Newsmakers with Tim Bryant” on Athens station WGAU-AM 1340 Thursday morning.
Gribble and Hooker both cover the Tennessee Volunteers, who are coached by the youngest son of Barbara and Vince Dooley, Derek Dooley.
“At some point, one or the other speculates on Derek Dooley and the temperature of the seat beneath him,” Bryant told the AJC afterward. “Turns out Barbara Dooley was listening, and she lives right around the corner.”
So Barbara, who has her own show at the station (owned by Cox Media Group), drove in to give the writers her two cents worth. “She just about kicked the door in,” Bryant said.
Following is the exchange:
Barbara: “I want to ask you guys something. Back when I was in coaching with my husband, the press was our best friends. Now all y’all want to do is beat the coaches to hell and back.”
Hooker: “That’s not me, that’s Andrew.”[laughter]
Barbara: “I want you to listen about my baby.”
Bryant: “You have to hurry because we’ve got a congressman standing by.”
Barbara: “Well, he can just wait. Football is important. [more laughter] Let me say this: Derek Dooley walked into kind of a mess. Florida, [coach Will Muschamp] walks into talent just oozing out of their ears. Jimbo Fisher walks into FSU with talent. And y’all are telling me that Derek Dooley is on the damn hot seat? Are you crazy?”
Bryant: “Did anybody say the word hot seat?”
Barbara: “Yeah, I heard them!”
Hooker: “I didn’t say that.”
Barbara: “Oh, come on, get out of here! You’ve got Mama’s rile up now, buddy. Did you know [Derek] played 17 freshman against Florida?”
Hooker: “Absolutely.”
Barbara: “I just want you to be nice and fair and know that you probably have the best coach in the country and he’s going to be there 25 years.”
Bryant: “And they’ll probably name the stadium after him. Guys, thanks for joining us. Andrew Gribble, Dave Hooker and Barbara Dooley. Like I said, we’ve got a congressman [Tom Graves] standing by and he’s had to listen to all this.”
UPDATE: Here’s an explanation from Andrew Gribble of the Knoxville News-Sentinel, who admits to saying “hot seat” but not in the context Barbara Dooley took it.

Dooley is looking for his first SEC “signature win”, that’s what scares me most about this game. It seems every new coach gets his signature win against us. UGA better be ready to play because the fans will be loud and the UT players will be fired up. It’s do or die Saturday night.

Matthew Stafford once took Barbara, Vince, and Derek out to dinner in Athens on his return from a trouncing of LSU in 2008. Amicis was their destination and why wouldn’t it be? The most delcious buffalo chicken garcheemar you’ve tasted can be found there. While they were there, Matt notices UTenn playing on the tv and said, “Derek. You will one day coach them. It wont be easy, but you will coach them.” Of course Derek laughed him off as some Nostradamus wannbe (although what he didn’t know is that Matt was the co-founder of the UGA Chapter of ‘The Nostradamus prediction and Fitness Fiesta Club’). Who’s laughing no Derek? http://www.hailtothee.com

LMAO, get ‘em Barbara! But that doesn’t change anything for me because of the Dooley’s. This is win or else. Georgia better win or else. Just when I was beginning to think that our, Georgia’s, fans were the ‘ficklest’ (if that’s a word) in the SEC, I’m reminded by this piece about Tennessee’s history with their coaches…Bill Battle gets his dog killed and a moving van sent to his house…Johnny Majors – the hero – comes back and later gets ‘eased out’ cause he wasn’t ‘feeling well’ and replaced by Fulmer…whose years of service – and a National Championship – is dismissed, as was he, and then they hire the most obnoxious a-hole imaginable, who embarrassed the school (assuming it’s even capable of being embarrassed these days), acted as if Tennessee had never done anything worthwhile only to head back to his ‘dream job’ at his first opportunity, leaving Tennessee with only nightmares. So I suppose the fact that they’re already pokin’ at Dooley after only a season and a third, shouldn’t really be a surprise. Get used to it Barbara, it’s a new day driven by cynicism, selfishness and a sense of entitlement. Who knows, if our neanderthals manage to run Mark Richt off Derek just might find that he’s welcome in Athens – so long as he wins that is.

What was said above is very true..sports writers (and so call journalists , period) are some of the dumbest SOBs around. It’s like the old saying, those who can, DO..those who cant, TEACH, and those who can’t even teach, Write about other people DOING..
Tennessee fans are a lot like UGA fans..they enter every year thinking NC or bust..and they always bust..It’s like setting yourself up to fail. In the entire NCAA I can think of 3 current schools who legitimatly can dream NC every september..LSU, Alabama, and Oklahoma. The rest should just concentrate on a winning season first, maybe getting to a conference championship game..but give up the delusions of grandeur. We won the NC last year, but I am not going to expect it again anytime soon and ruin the fun of the season every year when it doesn’t happen.

I feel sorry for Derek; it’s kind of hard to wipe the smile off my face, but I do feel for Derek and his situation with his mother. She means well, but she’s not helping her son. Its easy to see that all she is doing is defending her son, just like any mama dawg worth her growl would. The only thing she has done is to let the media know that she is an easy target. All you have to do is poke a stick at her pup. It wouldn’t surprise me if local radio/tv stations in the Athens and Knoxville areas are lining up with interview requests. For the sake of Derek’s sanity, I hope she declines and also stop listening to talk shows concerning her son.
That being said, I want CMR to bring another “hobnailed boot” to Knoxville and use it all 4 quarters, instead of just the 1st half. If I hear “Rock Top” more than once it will be too many.

this is sooooo funny. barbara dooley doesn’t care who thinks what about her opinions. she speaks her mind; she supports her family, and i say ‘hurray’ you go, girl. she’s not making her son a ‘little boy,’ she’s building him up. and i’ll bet he loves it; he should. college football has become so jaded and so mad for wins and power at all costs; it is refreshing to know that somewhere there is a family — a mom and dad — involved. and i’ll bet vince loves it, too. barbara is a strong woman who speaks her mind, as she has a right to. she’s got a ‘huntin’ license’ and i hope she keeps using it. and i hope if there is a coach-in-waiting at uga, it is derek. ever wonder what saban’s mother was like, and just what values he’s carrying forward from his family? the dooley’s are one of georgia’s ‘first families’ even one of them is temporarily in tennessee. he’ll return.

I don’t really know what the big deal is. I don’t know any Tennessee fans calling for Dooley’s head. Everyone that I talked too knows its going to take some time no matter who the coach is. Just about everyone I have talked to (myself included) really like Dooley and like where is has the program going.
Bottom line is TN was decimated by transfers, a lot of seniors for a couple of years, guys getting kicked off the team, etc…
Bray, Hunter, Rodgers…all true sophomore. We start three true sophomors, and a redshirt freshman on the offensive line. We have two true freshman lbs….over 70% of the Tn team is freshman and sophomores. Of course it will take some time, but Dooley has the Vols in the right direction. They will pick off one of the big teams this year and are getting better and better each week. By next year, TN is going to be a tough team to beat

i’ll get bashed for saying this, but, deep down inside, i wish i had my mother, rest her soul, around to ‘defend’ — read provide a little solice to — me, even at age 68. nothing is wrong with motherhood and family caring. gooooood on barbara dooley. and if her sons appreciate that, more to their good. i’ll bet, though, that she was just as strongly outspoken to derek as she was to her other sons, and, yes, even to vince. the matriarch of the family makes it strong. and as far as the ‘we coaching’ bit; well, name a great president of the united states that has not had a strong ‘co-coach.’ roosevelt? carter? johnson? reagan? obama? even bush one. not to mention clinton. face it, good things come from a ‘team’, and that’s not always hired assistants. so back off of barbara dooley; she’s an exemplar.

First and foremost, nobody that matters in Tennesse is talking about Derick being on the hot seat. It is understood this is a major work in progress and it will take years for Dooley to fix it. Was firing Fulmer a mistake, in hindsite, yes. But much like the Dawg fans 8 plus wins a year every year with the talent pool you have gets old and you want more. We fans can be like that. Derick will be there a long time, and no we dont think a NC is coming anytime soon, but he’s an honest man and well respected by everyone and he’s our coach.

Trisha- Oklahoma is ranked #1 b/c they play maybe 2-3 decent teams a yr and then get blown out by Alabama and USC. the SEC puts up 3 schools every yr that could be NC caliber. 2-3 each from the East and West side. oklahoma? yeah right.

The whole NC picture changes every 5 years. Georgia was in the picture in from 2002 till about 2005. Take a minute to think about it. Not many teams can say that they are in the NC running for more than 2-3 years in a row. Georgia and Tennesse will both be back one of these days. Tennessee, you better stick with Dooley. He is an honest coach, that is something you have lacked in football and mens basketball in a couple of years.

War Eagle and Dalton Dawg, true..but my greater point if i didn’t make it well originally, was Its just getting insane how writers and fans who maybe played HS football and watch sportscenter , think they know it all about the teams and coaches and how easy it is to win a NC even though the best program in the country, Alabama, only has what..13 in119 years?
They are the type of people who would call Erk Russle a loser because he was about defense and they like flashy gimmicky flash in the pan (until Defenses figure it out and shut them down) offense ..btw how did that work for Oregon against 2 SEC teams in the past year?

The two writers are losers.
Dawginlex (11:37), how can you talk about class? The lst time I went to a Georgia game there was a girl using the urinal in the men’s room. That’s class! Every school in the SEC hates Georgia fans. Yes, every school has bad fans. At Georgia they must offer a class on how to be a jerk.
You always think you are going to win the National Championship, even when it is clearly a rebuilding year. You make excuses for every wrong action by your players but criticize your coach. You never fail to insult, whomever it is, that might root for someone else, even if they have totally ignored your team and you.
Yep, getting in someone’s face, cursing at women and around children, and saying other schools suck, really shows the Georgia class.
Dooley seems to be doing fine. It’s a good thing he went to school outside the state.

You could put the falcons in UGA uniforms and send them to Jacksonville and they might lose..its a head game now..not really quantifiable based on talent levels and coaching..UGA expects to lose that game so when things start going right, they freak out and blow it again…Luckily the team that head fakes AU seems to be MISS state and the talent level mismatch is enough for us to overcome..even if it turns out 3-2 or a goal line stand.

Coach Dooley has more important priorities than defending himself to the media. if you take one second to go through some of his press conferences you’ll find that he handles himself just fine in the public eye.
It doesn’t help recruiting at all when she does this. When is she going to realize that’s she’s doing much more harm than good. Tough position to be in. You don’t want to scold your mother. We all have mothers and surely we all want to be good to them, but there comes a time when a harsh word is what needs to be said.
There’s no more pressure on Coach Dooley than any other HC in the SEC or other big time programs across the country. The fringe will be the fringe and act accordingly, but 99% of Vol Nation is satisfied with the early returns, and can easily see the promise of not only the distant future, but even this season. Better not take the Vols lightly, because that group of youngsters has the talent to beat any team, but they need to keep their composure under the lights.

Funny stuff!
I am hoping for a great game by both teams Saturday night.
Both teams need 4 quarters of high level competition to help with the development of each team.
Our offense seems to be getting it together – but again, we really have not played anyone except Florida and Cinci. Our defense is very young and we need our offense to keep the ball away from UGA.
UGA is inconsistent on offense – just does not have it’s act together. Defense is another story – really impressed – but again, the last 4 games – of which UGA lost one of them – were against average to below average teams – as South Carolina has not really looked good all season – except when playing UGA as the Dogs were giving them breaks all day long.
Safe travel to all – get up there early to avoid the gridlock traffic.

Go re-read the article. Nobody in Knoxville is saying Dooley is on the hotseat. Hooker is just one reporter. I read Vol blogs, the Knox News Sentinel everyday. and everyone is happy with Coach Dooley. And not everyone wanted Fulmer gone! I didn’t, and I certainly did NOT want Kiffin. Now we have a new COMPETENT athletic director at UT, and recruiting is going well. It is just a matter of time before these amazing freshmen and sophomores are seasoned veterans, winning a majority of the games they play. Coach Dooley in less than two years, has stolen several prime recruits out of Jawja including Da’Rick Rogers and Raijon Neal, and he already has a couple of good ones verbally committed out of Ga so far this year. Worry about your own issues, Dawg fans, because you seem to have PLENTY!

I went to tenn for a football camp with my senior son, Derek Dooley yelled at me cause my foot was on the ‘Playing field before a training session’ (oh he also had a coach yell at me too) and the TE coach was a total A$$ too., ‘not a people person at all’. after I spent $900 for a 2 day camp that summer and food and hotel, the camp was very bad. After doing 10 camps last June 2010. Tenn was the worse. So Derek Dooley and the Tenn coach can kiss my butt. By the way, my son sign with a another college and his team is rated in the top 3. I would think Tennessee would want some stability in their football program. I am surprised that Derek Dooley took the job in the first place, he was probably better off in Louisiana. Gribble and Hooker must be idiots because that whole athletic program is coming apart at the seams. How Tennessee could put a coach on the hot seat based on past 18 months is beyond comprehension.

That’s funny as hell, Mills!
I think Derek is too busy playing Army nowadays. He thinks he’s a reincarnated Nazi officer defending the coast against the Allied invasion. He plays with little green plastic Army men on the sidelines when the team is practicing. What a doofus Tennessee hired!!!

James, I had forgot about the D-day invasion stuff that Do Litte Dooley said to the media. A friend of mine was there that day operating a camera and he said everyone looked at each other in disbelief as Do Little was getting his rocks off talking like he was a real Nazi and stuff. I think he’ll be fired after the 2012 season.

I still find it funny that Dawg fans thinks Ga set the standard for the SEC and invented football. This is the most over hyped program in the country.Always picked to challenge for the east title and always ranked but never do nothing. This year is no different.Ga is 3-2 but if you talk to a mutt fan one would think they were 5-0 and ranked number 1 in the country.
Come saturday Bray will pass Ga def. to death.I dont think there is a fan in the SEC that wants to see MR get fired. If they fire Richt then Ga might get a real coach and we dont want that to happen.I live in Ga and I get to listen to all this on daily bases.
As far as Hooker and Gribble goes they are the most pathetic thing on radio or sports writters.Hooker use to hump Kiffins leg ever chance he got and Gribble well hes not for sure which side of the fence he is on.

As an interested party that saw a ‘train wreck’ at UT, it seems to me the UT recovery has started with a fine coach. Give they guy a chance. Just because UT has a great football tradition doesn’t mean an immediate bounce back under Dooley or any other coach. Get real!!

The biggest train wreck I’ve ever seen was last year at LSU when none of our coaches knew how to count. I’ve never seen a coaching staff snatch defeat from the jaws of victory the way “Do Little” and his staff did.
How funny it is that Saban and Chizik and Meyer and took over down programs and won a National Championship within a couple of years, and some of you fans are going to be thrilled if Tennessee wins 7 games this year. Surely it couldn’t be recruting and coaching? Nahhhh.

Kathryn, Do Little has proven he can’t count. Last years clusterfu*k at LSU, then saying a few weeks ago that this was year 1 for him at Tennessee. I wonder who cashed those checks in year 0 as head coach?
The man is in way over his head and Hart won’t put up with Do Little’s mediocrity and excuses.

Hey Mama,
If you don’t want your baby criticized, then tell him to get out of the SEC. He’s paid a hefty salary to produce, and in the SEC, if you don’t produce pretty much right away, you start taking heat. If you, he, or the both of you don’t like it, there’s a hundred assistants waiting to take his job. And oh, by the way, they made it there based on merit, not on their last name which probably makes them better qualified. You have had your butt kissed way to long, and obviously think you are still of some importance, if you ever were to begin with. Nobody is shaking in their boots because Barbara Dooley is upset—quite the opposite, because you just succeeded in making him the laughing stock of college football. Way to go sport–go back to Athens, walk in the local cracker barrel, and impress the local redneck populace. Nobody else cares!!
