Rogers
Tennessee wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers was an AJC Super 11 selection and the No. 1 prospect in the state Georgia for the Class of 2010. He was actually committed to the Georgia Bulldogs for seven months, from June 2009 until he flipped his commitment to the Vols in January of 2010. Now a sophomore, the Calhoun resident enters Saturday’s game against Georgia in Neyland Stadium as Tennessee’s No. 1 offensive threat. He leads the Vols in receptions (27) and receiving yards (442). Rogers talked to reporters on a teleconference call on Wednesday and here’s what he had to say. . . .
Q: Can you please remind folks about how you came to sign with Tennessee after being committed to Georgia for so long?
A: “Really I just came on a visit [to Knoxville] and I fell in love with the team and the city. I just really wanted to be a part of a program that was rebuilding and that’s what really changed it for me.”
Q: Did Georgia have any hints or signs that you were going to flip on them? Did you surprise the coaches when you switched to Tennessee?
A. “I don’t know. I don’t know about the coaches. They can feel however they might have felt. It was all for me. You know, I had to go where I could be happy and I’m in a great place now. I’m happy here.”
Q: Word is the people of Calhoun were pretty upset with your decision. Has your hometown gotten over that?
A: “Oh, yeah, they’ve calmed down. At first people were just bitter because I went to a rival school. But now it’s just like, ‘we’ll cheer for Da’Rick wherever he is. We’re still Georgia fans but we’ll just be Tennessee fans, too.’
Q: Have you exchanged any tweets or Facebook messages with Bacarri Rambo this year?
A: “No, none at all.”
Q: Do you get especially fired up for playing Georgia?
A: “Most definitely. It’s sort of personal, this game is. But I’ll just be taking it like any other game. It’ll be a team effort and we’ll come out and play hard against a good team and see where it ends.”
Q: You didn’t have much of an impact in last year’s game against Georgia. What kind of improvements have you made since last year to put you in the position you are now?
A: “Mainly just with route-running and speed off the ball. College and the SEC are all about how fast it is. Once I got a hang of that and got the playbook down pat, I was just able to play fast. And then it was about who’s the better athlete.”
Q: What was playing in Sanford Stadium like for you last year?
A: “It was sort of new, being booed by the whole stadium. That was new to me. It was crazy to hear that. It didn’t really affect me. It was just a new environment, a new thing. I’m ready this year. I’ve trained a lot harder. It’ll be a good game.”
Q: How excited you going to be on Saturday?
A: “Well, of course, we’ll all be excited. But I’m going to do a good job of keeping my team levelheaded and play well. I’m going to try to be a leader and be calm for the team and not let my emotions get to me.”
Q: How has your role changed since Justin Hunter went down with the knee injury against Florida?
A: “It really hasn’t changed that much. The objective is always to catch balls and score touchdowns. The thing is, I’m the go-to guy now and I know that. I just have to make plays when the ball is thrown to me.”
Q: What’s it like playing with Tyler Bray as quarterback?
A: “To be honest, it’s pretty easy. He usually puts the ball where it needs to be, where only I can get it. It’s pretty much as simple as that.”
Q: What has made Bray such a better quarterback this season?
A: “Really just his work ethic and his composure. His composure is through the roof now. Last year he didn’t say much in the huddle. This year he’s definitely a vocal leader and keeps everything calm in the huddle. He’s really worked on his composure this year.”
Q: What are your thoughts on Georgia’s defense?
A: “Really they’re just an athletic front. They play fast. They always run to the ball. They’re great athletes and they make plays.”
Q: Do you feel like there was more talk between these two teams last year?
A: “I think so. But I’m the kind of guy, I feed off any kind of energy, whether it be a negative or a positive I flip it to a positive. So, you know, trash talking and everything, it just makes the game more intense for the fans to watch and makes it a more fun environment.”

“It’s was all for me” – Pretty much sums up this narcissistic Prima Donna – I could care less if he decided UT was the place for him. But to string along another program for nearly a year – after they committed to you and quit recruiting that position – and then pull a switch on signing day – and then have the gall to say “It’s personal” with UGA?

DaRick and UT deserve each other. Me-first headcase, albeit talented, playing for the shadiest program in college football, maybe just behind Bama over the course of each school’s history. In the end, it was probably for the best that he didn’t come to UGA.
“It was all for me”…that comment perfectly summarizes this trashball. Yes, kids have to make the best decisions for themselves, but in all walks of life you do things with class, even when you’re looking out for #1. DaRick has never understood that, and it will ultimately be his undoing.

Here’s his line from the only “real” game he’s played in: Florida
5 catches for 62 yards and a touchdown.
Not bad but I don’t think he’ll even do that on Sat. Maybe 5 catches but for less than 50 yds and no touchdowns. His QB better practice running for his life this week.

Some of us are lovers, but most of y’all are haters…
UGay fans are so delusional and ass backwards. Couldn’t have been more excited to have an elite WR committed, then as soon as he switches and signs with UT all of the sudden he is full of bad character, poor decision making and none of y’all want him. What a joke. I can’t believe y’all think it is selfish for a student athlete to choose a school that best fits him. Are you understanding what your saying? What other reason do you choose a school? He’s from GA so he has to go to UGay? He needs to please the fans and chose an education based on what everyone else wants? Real intelligent UGAy fans, hate a kid bc he chose a school that fits him. That’s showing real class.

We got Marlon Brown from them at the last minute and they got DaRick from us a year later! Good luck to both the young men and hope it works out best for both of them! I really think they might have beaten Florida if their best player didn’t get hurt early on in that game! That kid was better than DaRick and may have been top 10 WR in the country this year.
However, we have played a tougher overall schedule so far so this should be a close game.

ATL_Vol: How can a UT Fan say anything about being classy? Look at your men’s basketball program and football program — you hired two cheaters and now your progam is in trouble. It’s OK with me if Rogers chose a different school — but it is how he did it that angers UGA fans. If we had known earlier that he liked UT, we could have recruited other players.

ATL_Vol,
I really like your comment about class. That is coming form a fan of a school that wears Pumpkin Orange, hired the extra classy Lane Kiffin and is based in the crap hole, rust bucket town of Obknoxville. At least you are classy enough to move to a good city that has more to offer than UT, Oak Ridge and TVA as its only sources of a decent living. I was transferred to Obknoxville in 1996 for three years and outside of the Smoky Mountains the place is a dump.

I could give a rat’s behind about Da’Rick Rogers. But I’ll say this…
If Richt even remotely cares about keeping his job next season, he better have these boys ready to play come Saturday. The Vols have some talent but they’re a work in progress. I wasn’t particularly blown away with Tyler Bray in the Florida game, but he and the rest of the Vol offense have big play ability. They also remember the beatdown they received in Athens last season. That young Tennessee team was experiencing a let down from the LSU loss the week before, and just didn’t have any gas left in the tank to hang with Murray & AJ. You can bet that won’t be the case this year , and if we don’t want to be embarrassed like we were in 2009 and 2007, we better come ready to play.

Forget your personal feelings UGA fans. In case you haven’t noticed we sorely lack a secondary target at WR and would be a much better team with Rogers. Our top wideout is very good but against a good defense, which I don’t think we’ve faced since week 1, he can be neutralized. We need someone to step up. King has been disappointing and Brown has yet to contribute. We targeted Bradberry in the red zone two weeks ago to tell you how thin we are at WR. Richt should tell Branden Smith or Crowell to get over the need to wear the #1 jersey so we can have both on offense at the same time. But that would take putting your players in their place for the betterment of the program and that’s something Richt still can’t do. We wouldn’t have won the 2009 Carolina game without Smith’s contributions on offense.

Da’Rick didn’t have any involvement in the bar fight. That was Darren Myles Jr who assaulted an off duty police officer, and he was dismissed from UT.
Da’Rick has already been more productive in 16 games than Marlon Brown in 2.5 seasons. Take Marlon…David Ricky aka Da’Rick is much better. He’s a beast, and it will show Saturday. Take all your hate and animosity towards Tennessee and choke on it. We have more national titles, sec titles, all Americans, bowl wins and overall wins, we even have the head to head matchup. Taking the game “sort of personal.” What’s more scary? 1 player taking the game personal, or an entire team and coaching staff?

The only punk is you, talking about 18-19 year young men. Crowell is the number 2 Running Back in the nation. Start reading the sports news, SEC Freshman of the Week three weeks in a row. He’s not even from here anyway and he only ended up at Calhoun because he got kicked out af a private school in rome. Gotta love it when a recruit backs out of a months long commitment on the week before signing day, then says the game against that school is personal haha. The victim mentality for Rogers in this scenario escapes me. I do think the recruiting and college football rivalries are over hyped. Still, let’s face it. The only reason Rogers is in a UT uniform is because UGA wasn’t going to offer his QB buddy. Vandy was the only school offering him. Even Kiffin wasnt going to which is why Rogers never bit on UT before. Dooley came in, needed a splash, and offered both of them scholarships even though the QB will be lucky to see the field.

I too wonder how an interview with this kid allowed him to get away with saying that ‘he just decided that he liked Knoxville better than Athens’, or whatever, without asking him what role Nash Nance’s dad had played in getting him to switch, particularly if his ‘other’ boy Nash, would be included in a package deal. And further, about Da’rick’s role in kicking a plain-cloths cop in the head in a bar-room brawl. But then, that’s just me.
And even if you didn’t think it appropriate to ask those questions, or were told that if you did the ‘interview’ was over, then why wouldn’t you, at least, mention them as part of what you ultimately posted. For this kid to simply say ‘I changed my mind’ about the commitment when everybody knows, and it was widely reported at the time, what the real story was, and is…Nash Nance’s dad saw an opportunity two or three years ago when his boy was playing QB at Darlington Prep – along with the phenomenal WR from Atlanta. Da’rick – that the two of them would transfer to Calhoun, or whatever the school is called, and that he, Nance The Elder, head of some local carpet company (what else?), would move Rogers and his mom there, get (or give) her a job, and set the school up for a great season along with a potential package deal down the road for his son. Only Georgia told him they were ‘full-up’ on QBs and didn’t plan to sign anymore so they split up – Rogers to Georgia and Nance to Vandy. Then when Georgia dismissed Mettenberger and knew they had to do something, they signed the leading passer in the State from Lassiter – Huston Mason – and daddy Nance got his nose out of joint. And by the way, don’t know what happened to Nance The Younger, but he’s not listed on the (three deep) depth chart for QBs on the Tennessee Roster…

Recruits switch schools last minute often.
I am sure Clemson and SoCal wonder why Herschel wound up at UGA – and just happened to pick up a new Trans Am at the same time….HMMMMMM.
Tennessee has been burned by last second switches – so has UGA. Hate it, but it’s a part of the game.
At the end of the day – Da’Rick not attending UGA opened the opportunity for another great football player to attend UGA. Look at it this way – maybe, just maybe – Malcolm Mitchell would have gone to FSU or ALABAMA – his two schools rated above UGA right to signing day – if UGA did not need WR’s. Mitchell has made more of an impact for UGA in his freshman year than Da’Rick has made for Tennessee. Fortunately, Da’rick has learned the system and has improved – he has the tools! He is now a very good receiver on the college level.

We got Marlon Brown because his grandmother saw through the smoke and mirrors Lane Kiffin and Ed Orgeron were putting up (turns out she was right). Tennessee got Da’rick as a payback for taking their states #1 high school recruit. However, the deal was also related to UGA not offering Nash Nance a Scholarship. As recent news reports, former coach at UT brokered deal for Lache Seastrunk to fly to Knoxville for a “unofficial” vist. Needless to say UT more than likely paid for Da’Rick’s services as well. There’s no great athletes in Tennessee so they have to go out of their state and typically pay them to play their. Go take a look at their roster. Most of their players are not from Tennessee. Two predictions… Da’Rick never beats UGA and Nance never sees the field during their careers at UT.

You UGA fans are unbelievable. You want to trash a kid because he didn’t sign with your school? So let me get this straight…UGA has never flipped a kid right at the end of the signing period? Of course they have…and when they do, you guys slap each other on the back and give the coaches kudos for doing so. And before anybody brings it up, I know that we gave Nash a scholarship as well. Richt has done the same thing…twice.
Bottom line is…pick an arguement. You either don’t need Da’Rick, he’s a punk and you are glad he signed elsewhere…..OR you are still so sick with jealousy that you want to trash him…it’s your choice.

But he’s not the same coach. 8-5, 6-7, and starting the season 0-2 is NOT getting the job done. The man is making 3 Million a year to put this on the field. How much are you two making? He’s not getting paid 3 million a year to be a campus minister, he’s getting 3 million a year to be a FOOTBALL COACH!!! I’m tired of half a$$ness! I’m tired of being second tier! And I tired of not winning championships when the ENTIRE SEC EAST IS DOWN!!! Richt has had more than enough time to turn this around, and he hasn’t. Gen Neyland, at least one of us was relevant from ’92 through ’05. Tennessee was almost always superior for the first 8 years of that stretch and won all of them. Georgia was usually superior for the last 5 years of the stretch and won 4. Since then, neither one of us has been relevant except Georgia for half a season (after the loss to UT) in ’07. There is no really any point in talking about superiority until at least one of us can be consistently relevant on a national scale again. Unfortunately, the winner of this game will probably get to go to a mediocre bowl and the loser will go to a bad one or stay at home. What is superior about that?

October 6th, 2011
8:55 am
A football recruiter from a northern school asked a potential recruit (who was being recruited by Tennessee) why the Volunteer Fans wore orange. “Is it about tradition?” He asked. The recruit scratched he head and said “I don’t really know anything about tradition except they have an ugly dog for a mascot and play ‘Rocky Top’ until it get’s annoying.” “Hummmm” the recruiter thought. The next day the recruiter found himself in Georgia looking at another potential recruit. The recruit’s Dad was present at the practice so the recruiter decided to introduce himself. After introducing himself, and after a little small talk, the recruiter asked the recruit’s dad why the Volunteer Fans wore orange. The recruit’s dad kinda chuckled and said “I thought everyone knew the reason for them wearing orange.” The recruiter said “no sir and no one has told me anything.” “Is it about tradition?” The recruit’s dad said “Hell no, it’s for their safety.” “Safety” the recruiter said looking puzzled. “Well yes said the recruit’s dad.” “Volunteer fans go hunting on Fridays, the Football Game on Saturday and Monday through Thursday they pick up trash along the side of the road.” “Really” the recruiter replied. “Yep” said the recruit’s dad adding “they don’t want to get shot, they don’t want to get beat up and they don’t want to get hit by a car on the side of the road.” “I understand now” said the recruiter walking away making a note to stay away from Tennessee.

Deception, worked well against UGA in the first 2 loses. Can UGA execution a deception against Tenn.? High risk but high reward, if it works. Think the Tenn game is a perfect opportunity for a deception. I suspect both teams have designed deception plays. UGA should do it first. Passion surrounding Da’Rick recuitment by UGA and the trash talk between Rambo and Da’Rick.( makes them good “bait”). Richt doesn’t like to go for a 1st down on 4th and inches inside the opponent’s red zone. In other words he has been coaching it very conservatively and this should help a UGA deception.

Richt can obviously recruit. And clearly it wasn’t a one or the other situation, but in 09 UGA got coveted WR Marlon Brown from Memphis and the next year UT got Da’Rick out of Calhoun. Both guys left their home state to play for a rival school. I’d say the Vols got the better end of the deal on that one.

Usually when an opponent gets obsessed about playing you , he reacts one of two ways. Either he does poorly, because his obsession has caused him not to think correctly, or he actually does better than he would have usually done. My guess is Rogers will try to hard to prove whatever he thinks he needs to prove and not being the brightest bulb on the tree, will make mistakes he shouldn’t have made. He will also believe all the hype about his bloated statistics against clearly inferior competition in all but one game, and he will find the going a little tougher playing UGA.

I wonder if all the negative comments about a kid, he is only 20, is really worth your efforts. Think about the things you did and said when you were 20, would you want a bunch of people talking about those. When he decided to go with Tennessee for him he thought it was the best decision. He is doing a great job as a player and a team member this year. I think UGA fans need to get the head out of their butts and what the game and enjoy what all of these young guys are able to do. I am sure none of you who commented could ever come close to preforming on the field as both teams young men are doing. Imagine if someone put you in as coaches….the players would have to call the game because I am sure ya’ll couldn’t. Grow up!

You gotta remember that Rogers is still a kid. Maybe Ga. started recruiting him too soon and quit recruiting him too soon. Anyway, he made his decision and he’s now just another good football player that Ga. faces this season.
I’m not real happy with Crowell’s in your face attitude when he thinks he’s done something good. Wherever he ends up down the field the O-line got him there with good blocks otherwise he’s on his butt in the backfield. I wish he was more like Herschel(Run them over, knock them down, pick them up and knock them down again) Herschel had class and Crowell needs to develop his. Crowell’s not in-destructible. It’s better to be respected than hated. Any defense can end his season with one cheap shot to the knees then his mouth stops flapping.

The kid is a big time receiver that’s for sure. Stop him and I think we have a great shot at shutting down the Vols. Long ball and short ball guy. I don’t know who is going to be covering him but they will have their hands full. Florida did a good job of containing him. Maybe watch that film to see what they did.

I think our secondary is more than capable of stopping him w/out the use of doubling up. But since their star is hurt, we may be able to afford to pay more attention to him, but then that could leave others wide open giving thier qb a chance to look like a heisman candidate. We need pressure! And a lot of hit! Sure Washington was a big loss, but I believe the backup crew can handle it…and we can’t forget Jarvis!

Da’Rick Rogers and Tyler Bray. I got that. What about a running game ? Special Teams ? A defense ? Played anyone. More to football than 2 guys. You haven’t even played anyone. I see the vols blogs are linked into to this blog now. How about some answers to the rest of the team ? Just saying. You are # 47 in wins starting 2005. That’s 7 seasons ago of nothingness. Surely you guys who have been around as fans longer than since 2005, remember vols used to play football. You used to recruit nationwide. You used to have a defense. Your special teams used to be great. And, you always had a running game. Now ? # 47 in won/lost record nationally since 2005 and nothing for defense, special teams or a running game. Please talk big for the game day after tomorrow. You’re nothing, and you should know that.

Interesting, the difference between the two teams fan message boards. You can tell which fanbase is optimistic about where it is heading and which is desperate.
The vast majority of UT fans feel Dooley’s program is making strides and is probably one more recruiting class from being back. The comments for the most part are civil and clean. No mention off “knocking someones head off” and such.
As for him being a punk, don’t know what swayed him for sure (probably was the Nance package deal, like that is the first time that has ever happened) but after his initial involvement in the 2010 Knoxville bar fight, neither him or ANY of Dooley’s recruits have had a hint of controversy. Arrests here have almost completley dried up and the one or two since were players Dooley inherited. We are not only confident we will be back to winning again but doing it the right way. I know statements like that have a way of coming back to you, but that really is how people feel.
I don’t expect Georgia fans to pull for Tennessee, but you should be proud someone with UGA ties like Dooley, is casting a good reflection on your program. Just as we are when one of Pat Summit’s former assistants does well.
Here’s to looking forward to a hard fought well played game that the best team wins.

I am currently a Georgia student who grew up with the Vols! So this game is going to be bittersweet either way. But I know uga was pumped to get DaRick before he decided to go to Tennessee instead. Instead of blaming him, a 18 year old kid who probably is immature and was looking for attention (who isn’t at 18 years old), blame Richt and the coaching staff for letting him slip through their fingers. Cause this guy is a beast and is only getting better!

The reason he didn’t go to UGA is he couldn’t get in academically and was going to have to go the JUCO route and anyone that can pronounce their own name can get into Tenn the school for the blind, deaf, and dumb. Plain and simple the kid is border line retarded. Listen to him and all that I feed off of trash talking blah blah blah and make positives out of it BS. Watch some film from his high school games and see if his attitude and personality are not the complete opposite of what he claims here and he was a major problem in the classroom as well so I’m glad they got him. It’s only a matter of time before he gets in trouble with the NCAA for improper benefits like the escalade that most likely someone from Calhoun bought him hush hush

Da’Trick Rogers-Nash! The #1 WR in the SEC! Ok lets look a little deeper… 62 yards against the lone D1 defense he faced. Averaging 127 YPG against “almost D1″ Montana, Cincinnati and Buffalo. No, not the Bengals and the Bills, they actually do have college teams, albeit barely. UGA is an SEC D, look for less than 50 yards from Da’Trick. And when that happens, all the off-duty cops moonlighting as bouncers in Knoxville beware!
