No war of words between Bacarri Rambo, Da’Rick Rogers this time around

Remember when Da’Rick Rogers’ was a Georgia commitment? The wide receiver from Calhoun was actually committed to the Bulldogs for seven months, in fact. But, as we all know now, Rogers reneged on his commitment in January of 2010 and signed instead with Tennessee. And the Vols are especially happy about that these days.

Those of us who saw him play in high school aren’t surprised to see that Rogers is now the Vols’ leading receiver. I was covering college recruiting for the AJC at the time and I rated Rogers as the No. 1 prospect in the state that year, so I’ve always thought highly of his football abilities. He remains the best high school receiver I’ve ever personally watched.

Rambo

Rambo

Thanks in part to the loss of fellow receiver Justin Hunter to a season-ending knee injury in the Florida game, Rogers (6-foot-3, 215 pounds) is now quarterback Tyler Bray’s primary receiver. He is currently second in the SEC in receptions (27), receiving yards (442) and receptions per game (6.8). In the Vols’ last game against Buffalo, Rogers had 180 yards receiving, which was his third 100-plus game of 2011.

Back to Rogers’ flip-flop. If you’ll recall, it caused a brief war of words via social media between Rogers and Georgia safety Bacarri Rambo. It started a few days after national signing day in February of 2010 when Rambo posted a message to Rogers on his Facebook status.

  • “Bacarri Rambo thinks it’s messed up how all of UGA high school commitments back out on us but I’m telling you now when I catch you on the field I’m going to knock fire from you,” Rambo wrote
  • Rogers responded via Twitter:  “Who is Bacarri Rambo?”
  • Then from Rambo on Twitter: “Tell Darick ‘Pretty Boy’ Rogers he doesn’t have to know me but I bet he will feel me!! Lol”
  • Then from Rogers: “Don’t worry about me ha … that’s your choice … last time i checked a big hit =’s you getting knocked out.”
  • Rambo: “I compete against the best receiver in the nation everyday at practice. Why should I worry about that guy?”

Rambo was reminded of that exchange with Rogers after Georgia’s practice Tuesday night.

“We haven’t said anything to each other [this year],” Rambo said. “I got over it. That’s in the past and I haven’t said anything else to him about that.”

Rogers concurred. Asked if he’d sent any private or public messages to Rambo, Rogers said, “No, none at all,” he said

You could say Rambo got the better end of the deal in last year’s game between Georgia and Tennessee between the hedges. The Bulldogs won 41-14, Rogers had just one catch for minus-3 yards and Rambo had an interception.

Rambo resisted the urge to gloat and spoke very respectfully about Rogers this time around.

“That’s in the past, too,” Rambo said of last year’s game. “Hopefully I can get some more interceptions this week. We’ve just got to do a great job of holding that guy. He has matured and gotten more experience and been more productive this season and he has a good quarterback throwing the ball to him. So we have to be heads up and slow those two down and try to keep him from catching balls and making big plays. So we’ve got a tough test this week.”

I talked to Rogers (along with Bray) on a teleconference call later this morning. CLICK HERE to read my Q&A with Rogers.

1. He is not the only guy on the field
2. Refer to number 1
3. Guess in his vast experience, he hasn’t had too many moments where they were down less than a TD near the end of the 4th quarter
4. UGA has 4 receivers with 10 or more catches … same as Tyler Bray. And for those thinking it’s all about Orson Charles, Mitchell has 6 more catches and didn’t even start 2 games.

What was incorrect about my statements about Murray? Please, if I am wrong or those statements are not true then let me know. And no, I am not a troll. You are one to talk, though. A UGA fan using an AU handle.

Tampa, he has had 18 starts and 2 and a half years in the system. That is pretty experienced. That argument holds no water.

It does hold water because he didnt play for one of those years. He only has 1 full year and this year as real game experience. He put up huge numbers last year, but the D couldnt hold. That isnt his fault. Now he has the number 7 D in the country…. so it will be a lot different for him this year!

TampaDawg

BMDPD, that refers to number 3 on your little chart, but experience means nothing with the comment you made if you don’t have a situation where a 4th quarter drive is there. It’s like asking a shortstop to dive for a ground ball when they aren’t hit to him. AM has a brand new backfield, 1 legitimate returning receiver, an O-line that is still trying to gel together and Mike Bobo calling plays. You do better with all that.

@BMDPD those are my initials I use them so I don’t forget my blog name and use someone Else’s like so many do on this blog . About our QB not one in the SEC puts up the stats he did last year as a freshman without talent, drive and guts..sorry but you haven’t watched much SEC football is you even try and argue that point. Second no one wins in the SEC without a good defense, please don’t try and sell me we have one last year. Third its a team game one player can’t win or lose it alone.

It still makes a difference BMDPD, 18 starts isn’t much for a QB.You can practically make a hall of fame list of college QBs that weren’t exactly studs early in their sophomore year but got it figured out by the time they were Juniors.

He threw a pick off of a tipped pass to answer your question, but would they have even had an OT without him. No, because against the mighty UF Gators, he lead, oh wait, there it is, A FOURTH QUARTER COMEBACK that was pretty significant. Keep working on it. How did the defense do in that game since he had to bring them back from a big deficit? He is ONE guy on the team. Give it a rest.

I watched every game BMPDP. The offense didn’t make nearly as many mistakes to cost the D as you want to portray. Did Ealey have costly fumbles late? Yup, hardly Murray’s fault though. He had 6 picks all of last year before the UCF game.

Revisiting Poole and his 100+ yards. Poole is a good back, but, if Tennessee pulls out a win, it won’t be in the running game. The middle has too much beef and the linebackers to quick. He’ll have better luck against Vandy.

And as for “putting the D in a bad place” BS when you post the most games where you team scores over 30 in a season in team history …YOU should win those games…I’ll break it down for you slowly..here we go…If you score 30 or more points in a SEC football game you should WIN the game…how many times last year did,LSU,Bama or UF lose when they scored 30 or more points? Leave it up to the AJC to drum up a non-story to get UGA fans all worked up. Yes Da’Rick was committed to UGA then changed his mind. It happens all the time. And yes, it does seem that the Vols swayed Da’Rick by offereing a scholarship to Nance. However, Richt has done the same thing in the past…a couple of times actually.

So…Why all the hate for Rogers? I’ve heard UGA fans (and players) say that if he didn’t want to play for UGA, then they didn’t want or need him. If that’s the case, then it seems that UGA fans would be happy that he didn’t sign with UGA. Instead, it seems that there is a lot of talking out of both sides of the mouth.
