Georgia coach Mark Richt thinks it's just a matter of time before Isaiah Crowell busts a long run for the Bulldogs. (UGA photo by Rob Saye)
ATHENS – At this point, everybody has seen enough of freshman tailback Isaiah Crowell to know he’s a real deal. He comes into the Mississippi State game as the SEC’s fourth-leading rusher at 103 yards per game and is coming off a 30-carry, 147-yard performance at Ole Miss.
What nobody has seen Crowell do yet, however, is rip off a really long run. It was his specialty at Carver-Columbus High, where he had a dozen touchdown runs of over 50 yards his senior year alone.
Crowell has noticed, too, and he’s itching to find some daylight.
“I’ve been trying,” said the 5-foot-11, 215-pound speedster. “I’ve been trying to use my speed to get outside and cut back and just find an opening. It hasn’t been there yet.”
Through four games, Crowell’s longest run from scrimmage has been 29 yards. That came last Saturday against Ole Miss. His longest scoring run was 27 yards against Coastal Carolina and he had a 17-yard TD off a screen pass against South Carolina.
Obviously there is much more speed on the field in college football. But Crowell believes he has the jets take the ball the distance if the opportunity rises.
“I think when I get in the clear I’ll be able to get it to the house,” Crowell said.
Georgia coach Mark Richt agrees. He was in attendance last fall when Crowell broke loose for a 90-yard touchdown run against eventual state champion Buford. Crowell’s “home run ability” was the main reason so many schools wanted to sign him. Richt thinks it’s just a matter of time before he pulls off such a run for the Bulldogs.
“I think he will,” Richt said. “I don’t think there’s been a run where he should’ve gotten much more than he did once he got out in space. I think it’s going to happen in time. There’s going to be some long runs in his career.”
In the meantime, Richt has been impressed with the short to medium runs Crowell has been able to string together.
“The thing I’m noticing about him is people are having a hard time getting clean contact on him,” Richt said. “They’re getting edges of him. He’s is very elusive in space and it’s kind of subtle. The guy looks like he’s right there to hit him pretty solidly, but he does just enough to take his hips away. He gets hit but he keeps on going.
“The backs that can make people miss in a tight space are really very good. That’s one of the things I think Knowshon may have been one of the best I’ve seen as far as being a guy that could make people miss in the box or behind the line of scrimmage. He was just exceptional at that, and Isaiah has some of that.”
Butler up for ‘Academic Heisman’
Georgia senior punter Drew Butler was among three SEC players and 47 nationwide to be nominated for the National Football foundation’s Campbell Award, known as the “Academic Heisman.”
Butler, an All-American who won the Ray Guy Award in 2009, has already graduated with a degree in telecommunications. He currently is enrolled in UGA’s sports management graduate program. He has a 3.62 GPA.
Etc. . . .
Jack Bauerle, who has led Georgia’s women’s swimming and diving program to four national championships and who has served as the head coach at the Olympics, has been chosen as the recipient of the Bill Hartman Award. Bauerle will be recognized at the Georgia-Mississippi State football game on The Hartman Award is the highest honor a former UGA student-athlete can receive from the school. . . . Freshman defensive back Nick Marshall confirmed this week he intends to join the basketball team in January. He was a four-star prospect as a shooting guard at Wilcox County High. . . . Saturday is “Red Ribbon” day for drug awareness at Sanford Stadium.

My advice is to watch some Tech films. We all have to admit that they are taking it to the house more than anyone at the moment. (Difference offense I know) Crowell is showing promise but I’m a little disturbed at his penchant to trash talk during a game. Where’s the class? Herschel wouldn’t do that. I have long wondered why Richt doesn’t stop that. I know as a UGA fan, I don’t like it. But after watching the LSU/WV game, I guess it’s becoming part of football.

I agree with TampaGator. It’s just a matter of time before he breaks a long run. The kid appears to have what it takes to be a premier back in the SEC. If he can add about 15-20 pounds in the off-season, he’ll be tough to bring down.

Duronimo,
Herschel probably would not do that, but so what? I am not a fan of trash talk either but I am less of a fan of statements like Herschel wouldn’t do it. Crowell has a different personality than Walker. From what I understand, some of the all time greats were also some of the all time greatest trash talkers. I hope Crowell stays healthy, stays out of trouble (for his and his family’s sake), and stays in school until he’s projected to be a top 15 pick in the 1st round.

duronimo, I didn’t see it, but I heard that Richt got into Crowel’s ear hole after he did some of the trash talking last week. I wish IC would stop the jawing and just do the work and get back to the line.
I also wish the dreads would go. Most of the helmets popping off in college football are coming off of heads of matted dreads. Yuck. BTW, don’t all those dreads increase heat exhaustion? I love having my hair short because long hair is hot. jmho

I think we can both agree that there are other degrees much more of a joke than telecommunications. You do have a point though. It is on par with majoring in journalism or psychology. Not that there is not some degree of effort needed there, but when every other person seems to hold a particular degree, it is hard to take degree too seriously. Then again, if it interests one and one wants a future in it, go for it.

you are the one bringing “ethinic background” into this. Grow up and get over your insecurities. I think the dreds look trashy and I don’t like them. I don’t care if it were a little green martian or a huge alien predator chasing Arnold Swartzenagger, it looks like crap. Add to it sweat and any hair products or an oily scalp and you have a much higher probability of the helmet popping off.
You do the stats going forward. When a helmet pops off, see if the player has short or really long hair. Keep in mind that those with really long hair are only 10 to 20 percent of the players so, there should be fewer of them with rock’em sock’em pop off helmets, but with the stats show that? H. No.

I meant not to offend anybody. I was speaking quite generally. Tons of people have such degrees from various schools and it generally simply does not impress me. It is my opinion that a degree that can be obtained without being a genius or without significant amount of studying is worth such an honor as that mentioned in the article. Do not care what institution the degree is earned in, it does not demand the same credit as does medicine, architecture, engineering, physics, and a few others earned from any school, anywhere. However, if one is going to major in such an area, a 3.62 GPA does not seem to be too difficult to achieve. Like I said, if it is an area of study they are interested in, go for it. For what is worth, I am often thought of as an arrogant _ when it applies to such matters.

So if the comments you made were of a non-racial nature (if anyone is confused, read the first page), then why bring dreds, an issue of intelligence, and police sirens? There is no way in these UNITED STATES a grown up would not interpret that as being racially biased. Think before you write. IC has yet to prove jack squat. MS will probably smack him in the mouth and he will tap his helment and retreat to the sidelines. UGA has probably seen the best of IC already this season. No heart or big time drive in this guy to keep him going when it gets tougher. UGA probably looses this game South Carolina style, you know, “if not for 1-2 plays we beat those guys”, will be a popular saying after the game.

Disgusting huh? Geez, he tells a guy who just popped him to bring it on, and you have him labeled as a felon and a failure. I’ve seen Knowshon turn and say something to a defended plenty of times. It’s a football game, ya know.
The problem with jawing like that (animated and obvious) is that nobody really knows or cares what was said and it just looks bad but personally I LOVE that the kid is out there mixing it up. He needs to learn that the camera is always on him, act a bit more polished, and he will. Coach was on top of it and lesson learned.

Yeah, I’m willing to bet 20-1 that IC “majors” in “free market capitolism” after his junior year. His trash talking isn’t the most pleasing thing, but guess what? IC and Jarvis Jones has instilled a level of toughness, attitude, and pride into this team. Listening at us diss their coach at every turn could cause the “timid” among them to fold up on the season before the halfway mark (see Boo Malcolme). This team has an opportunity to accomplish a lot and ruin a few people’s seasons. Someone has to fire up this team and the coaches are too cool for school to do it.

Evidently, the talent Crowell has is rare, otherwise we would see more doing what he does! I’m just glad UGA has him and I wish him a long starlit career! The pros will be howling for him for sure! Please stay healthy and the money will be yours!! One of the big differences that Alabama, Florida and South Carolina has are backs that can “get it done”. Until now, UGA hasn’t had that! It definitely keeps a team from being one dimensional. UGA’s crack recruiting corps needs to stay on the stick and look for more if UGA is to compete with the big boys…..oh, and make that an O-line too! GO DAWGS!!!

Leave the kid alone about the trash talking. He is 18 years old and I am sure, in his mind, he feels he has a lot to prove. No doubt the DBs from Ole Miss were talking trash to him WAY before the 29 yard run. CMR got on his butt immediately after the two were separated. I used to love to watch Knowshon jump to his feet after being tackled and sprint back to the huddle. That said, he talked a lot out there too. If you’re a high profile back in the SEC, it comes with the territory.
If I were to guess at what he said, it’d been more like “You tackle like a girl” … only a lot more obscene.

For BigTimeTechFan…..
Right now, I’d have to go with Mitchell. Not necessarily from a “raw ability” standpoint, but just the way he carries himself, the way he runs his routes, and the way he maintains his body/conditioning.
Also, he looks like he expects to be the man. He does have a couple of drops, but this kid has a long football future ahead of him. Oh yeah…….and he can FLY!

I’m against all trash talk. It use to be against the rules and now it is integral in sports (tennis and golf excepted), back it up or not ….trash talk is not called “trash” for no reason. It is trashy and shows no class! I don’t know if Crowell does it or not, but I am against anybody doing it. And when you do get a long run or pass reception……go back to the huddle and get ready for the next play. When you score then celebrate and …dang it, refs shut up and hold onto your handkerchiefs!

You guys act like it’s kindergarten out there. Everyone be nice and behave. Seriously? It’s all out war out there. The reason you don’t like it is because all you see is the talk AFTER the play, and sometimes it does look bad, but believe me, the trash talking starts during warmups. Or carries over from last year. I want my Dawgs to have 100% of their heart in the game. If someone’s talking trash to IC, I hope he’s runs them over, and while they’re gasping for air because the wind just flew out of their lungs, he mentions a not-so-subtle reminder about who the better player is. And I promise you, the next time the guy that got run over sees IC coming his way, he will think twice about taking a direct shot at him. It’s called a mental advantage. Whether you like it or not, it’s part of football. If you don’t like it, stick to tennis and golf. Although I think there’s some trash talk in tennis now, too.
