Georgia’s Isaiah Crowell still looking to take it ‘to the house’

ATHENS – At this point, everybody has seen enough of freshman tailback Isaiah Crowell to know he’s a real deal. He comes into the Mississippi State game as the SEC’s fourth-leading rusher at 103 yards per game and is coming off a 30-carry, 147-yard performance at Ole Miss.

What nobody has seen Crowell do yet, however, is rip off a really long run. It was his specialty at Carver-Columbus High, where he had a dozen touchdown runs of over 50 yards his senior year alone.

Crowell has noticed, too, and he’s itching to find some daylight.

“I’ve been trying,” said the 5-foot-11, 215-pound speedster. “I’ve been trying to use my speed to get outside and cut back and just find an opening. It hasn’t been there yet.”

Through four games, Crowell’s longest run from scrimmage has been 29 yards. That came last Saturday against Ole Miss. His longest scoring run was 27 yards against Coastal Carolina and he had a 17-yard TD off a screen pass against South Carolina.

Obviously there is much more speed on the field in college football. But Crowell believes he has the jets take the ball the distance if the opportunity rises.

“I think when I get in the clear I’ll be able to get it to the house,” Crowell said.

Georgia coach Mark Richt agrees. He was in attendance last fall when Crowell broke loose for a 90-yard touchdown run against eventual state champion Buford. Crowell’s “home run ability” was the main reason so many schools wanted to sign him. Richt thinks it’s  just a matter of time before he pulls off such a run for the Bulldogs.

“I think he will,” Richt said. “I don’t think there’s been a run where he should’ve gotten much more than he did once he got out in space. I think it’s going to happen in time. There’s going to be some long runs in his career.”

In the meantime, Richt has been impressed with the short to medium runs Crowell has been able to string together.

“The thing I’m noticing about him is people are having a hard time getting clean contact on him,” Richt said. “They’re getting edges of him. He’s is very elusive in space and it’s kind of subtle. The guy looks like he’s right there to hit him pretty solidly, but he does just enough to take his hips away. He gets hit but he keeps on going.

“The backs that can make people miss in a tight space are really very good. That’s one of the things I think Knowshon may have been one of the best I’ve seen as far as being a guy that could make people miss in the box or behind the line of scrimmage. He was just exceptional at that, and Isaiah has some of that.”

Butler up for ‘Academic Heisman’

Georgia senior punter Drew Butler was among three SEC players and 47 nationwide to be nominated for the National Football foundation’s Campbell Award, known as the “Academic Heisman.”

Butler, an All-American who won the Ray Guy Award in 2009, has already graduated with a degree in telecommunications. He currently is enrolled in UGA’s sports management graduate program. He has a 3.62 GPA.

Etc. . . .

Jack Bauerle, who has led Georgia’s women’s swimming and diving program to four national championships and who has served as the head coach at the Olympics, has been chosen as the recipient of the Bill Hartman Award. Bauerle will be recognized at the Georgia-Mississippi State football game on The Hartman Award is the highest honor a former UGA student-athlete can receive from the school. . . . Freshman defensive back Nick Marshall confirmed this week he intends to join the basketball team in January. He was a four-star prospect as a shooting guard at Wilcox County High. . . . Saturday is “Red Ribbon” day for drug awareness at Sanford Stadium.

I have no problem with Dreds, look ok with me, but I have noticed that helments seem to come off more when players have them.

I also have not seen Crowell play, sounds like he’s a good one averging over 100 yards as a Frosh in the SEC. Oh I did see some of the Boise St game during the LSU/Oregon commercial breaks but don’t think he played much or UGA didn’t give him the ball while I was watching.

I did see the freshmen WR M Mitchell break one, he looked good also, who’s better the Frosh WR Mitchell or Frosh RB (Crowell)

The only house Crowell will take it to is the big house. His trash talking is disgusting and not worthy of oue flagship university. I will give 10-1 odds that he never finishes his degree at Ga no matter what he is “majoring” in.

This is another case, many on here, of “guy doesn’t know what he is talking about but he is going to speak anyway out of pure ignorance.” Yes, that means you Dirty GT dawg. The only thing disgusting is the post itself.

@BigTimeTechFan just going on the number of touches per game I think you have to give the nod to IC, however they both are making their marks !

THE Dixie Redcoat Band: Stafford threw for 7,731 yards and 51 TDs at UGA, so I think he did “do something.” It’s why he became the No. 1 pick in the draft.

Leave the kid alone about the trash talking. He is 18 years old and I am sure, in his mind, he feels he has a lot to prove. No doubt the DBs from Ole Miss were talking trash to him WAY before the 29 yard run. CMR got on his butt immediately after the two were separated. I used to love to watch Knowshon jump to his feet after being tackled and sprint back to the huddle. That said, he talked a lot out there too. If you’re a high profile back in the SEC, it comes with the territory.

If I were to guess at what he said, it’d been more like “You tackle like a girl” … only a lot more obscene.

beanster, yeah I liked the way Knowshon just jumped up and hustled back. Didn’t matter what quarter it was or how many yards or carries he had for the day. Or how many times his eyes were gouged out. Always back up and at it.

I have nothing to say about football, with the exception that IC is the real deal.

These blogs are an awesome snapshot of human nature. I love it when y’all bash one another for not being able to spell, yet misspell your reply. Awesome.

What’s even better is that the recipient is oblivious to the misspelling! Yes!

Go Dawgs!

At the end of the day, spelling ain’t got nothin’ to do with old country football ‘nollege. Everyone is welcome and I’m always ready to learn something new. (And I lived in Carver Heights Baby!)

who’s better the Frosh WR Mitchell or Frosh RB (Crowell?)

For BigTimeTechFan…..

Right now, I’d have to go with Mitchell. Not necessarily from a “raw ability” standpoint, but just the way he carries himself, the way he runs his routes, and the way he maintains his body/conditioning.

Also, he looks like he expects to be the man. He does have a couple of drops, but this kid has a long football future ahead of him. Oh yeah…….and he can FLY!

I’m against all trash talk. It use to be against the rules and now it is integral in sports (tennis and golf excepted), back it up or not ….trash talk is not called “trash” for no reason. It is trashy and shows no class! I don’t know if Crowell does it or not, but I am against anybody doing it. And when you do get a long run or pass reception……go back to the huddle and get ready for the next play. When you score then celebrate and …dang it, refs shut up and hold onto your handkerchiefs!

Kalamazoo — good point about the eye gouging. Those who don’t like the talking — it’s not like it’s friendly out there. I’d like to see any of you naysayers keep your composure when some idiot (who you know you can run over) talks trash about your mother, or fish hooks you while in the pile. The game is mean, fellas.

Calidawg — I agree wholeheartedly. Folks, if you’re going to rip on someone’s grammar, I’d recommend you triple proof read your post before hitting send. This isn’t English class but good lord, some of y’all really sound stupid.

I agree. Everybody needs to stop. Not only offense but defense as well!! I mean damn if you make a takle that is fine dont stand over top of them and try to position yourself to step over them when they are trying to get up!! That is what you are supposed to do is make the takle, isnt that your job?

1 for Mitchell, 1 for Crowell, sounds like they are both pretty good.

Tech top Frosh have been Shaq Mason, Laskey, Jeff Greene played well but only Laskey is starting as punt returner, but he’s done well. Mason played well against Kansas and was in the game pretty early, before most starters were pulled

You guys act like it’s kindergarten out there. Everyone be nice and behave. Seriously? It’s all out war out there. The reason you don’t like it is because all you see is the talk AFTER the play, and sometimes it does look bad, but believe me, the trash talking starts during warmups. Or carries over from last year. I want my Dawgs to have 100% of their heart in the game. If someone’s talking trash to IC, I hope he’s runs them over, and while they’re gasping for air because the wind just flew out of their lungs, he mentions a not-so-subtle reminder about who the better player is. And I promise you, the next time the guy that got run over sees IC coming his way, he will think twice about taking a direct shot at him. It’s called a mental advantage. Whether you like it or not, it’s part of football. If you don’t like it, stick to tennis and golf. Although I think there’s some trash talk in tennis now, too.

Class requires patience, discipline, and home trainin’. Actually, I was proud of the BSU fans on here.

Where are the MSU fans?

IMO, of the losses we had last year, only MSU was the one I felt like we had no chance in. We lost many games in a close fashion. Not that one. It might have been Chinese water torture, but once they had the vice grip on us, it was over.

As for this year……..I think them 2 big un’s are gonna help A LOT! I still think we lose this one, but, FWIW, GATA!
