ATHENS – Two more Georgia football players have decided to continue their careers elsewhere.
Ken Malcome, a redshirt freshman running back from Decatur, and Derek Owens, a sophomore cornerback from Jacksonville, both asked head coach Mark Richt to be released from their scholarships and are seeking transfers. Including safety Jakar Hamilton, that’s now three players who have left the program during this season.
Owens’ departure was expected and has been in motion for a few days. Malcome’s decision was an obvious disappointment for Richt.
“[Malcome] walked into my office just prior to practice and felt like he had gotten so far behind in the competition at his position, he felt like he needed to go to another school and get a fresh start and maybe get a better opportunity to play,” Richt said Wednesday. “So that’s where we are on that.”
Malcome, an all-state player at Southwest DeKalb High, was expected to step to the forefront this season with Georgia’s attrition at tailback. But after Washaun Ealey and Caleb King exited the program, Malcome fell behind true freshman Isaiah Crowell, junior Carlton Thomas and former walkon Brandon Harton on the depth chart in preseason camp. He did not the make travel roster for Ole Miss and finishes his Georgia career with one carry for zero yards.
Richt said he’d welcome back Malcome back if the player changed his mind.
“If Ken came to me tomorrow and said, ‘Coach, I lost my mind and I’,m sorry and I’d love to come back and compete here at Georgia, I’d hug his neck and say ‘come on,’” Richt said.
Owens played in Georgia’s first three games on special teams but also didn’t make the trip to Ole Miss. He had two tackles this season and six while appearing in 12 games last season. Richt said he does not expect Owens to transfer to Cincinnati, as has been reported.
Malcome and Owens represent the 14th and 15th Georgia players to leave the program with eligibility remaining since the end of last season. That includes players such as A.J. Green and Justin Houston, who entered the NFL draft, and Tanner Strickland and Tanner Sturdivant, who were medically disqualified. (See chary below)
The majority, however, left either because they’d fallen behind on the depth chart or did not see eye-to-eye with the football staff.
“Most everybody we recruit was probably the best player on their team or one of the best players on their team,” Richt said. “So most of them think they’re going to show up and play. They get around athletes that are just as good as them and now they have to learn to compete. Sometimes they see the mountain as too high too climb and they decide to go somewhere else. And that’s fine if that’s what’s going on.
“I want all these guys to get an opportunity to play. I want them all to get an education. But I think there’s value in fighting for your job.”

First, AltamahaDawg said “For my 2 cents, I don;t think Aaron Murray has even begun to play up to his potential and he could/should only get better. ” among other things regarding the QB situation. And I for one could not agree more. Great analysis A-Dawg.
Second, glad to see Sliced Bread finally started to speak up about his greatness (that stuff was funny).
Third, Steve, I suppose of the thousands of colleges out there and the 131 or so Div I schools, transfer players could have picked one of the just 50 schools ranked higher than UGA ACADEMICALLY (since you know so much about it ..no, actually, no you don’t) but then again, most of the schools in that top 50ish aren’t exactly known for their football program.
Fourth, any truth to the “Boo changes his mind” posts?

thanks Mark. I get tired of the crap from people like Steve who make statements about the academics of UGA without any facts behind it because the facts show something completely different. Guys like him are just plain ignorant.

PT says:
“285exp – Surely your not comparing Richt to Saban. One difference in these two coaches is that a drop off in performance by player or staff is addressed immediately. Saban would never let a program’s defense decline for 5 years before addressing it. It’s a business and he runs it as such.”
You’re right, I’m not comparing them. I’m comparing how those on this board slam Saban for “cutting” underperforming players to make room for better ones while saying nothing about Richt because the Georgia players simply leave because they can’t cut it.

I agree, Tampa. That would be my guess, or they are just trolls who want to get under your skin. Funny how technerds and the rest feel they must come on here and slam us… guess if you can’t beat us one way then try another…

Monsoon/Mark,
your trouble used to start with the little state called Alabama with BAMA destroying you in 2007 and Auburn crushing you in 2010 on their way to National Champ.
but now your trouble is with the tiny turtly Boise State. I am wondering what they can achieve this year after stomping your skeleton.
Now I feel much better.

It’s a Darwin thing called “Survival of the Fitest”. I am personally happy to see the “weak” ones go somewhere else like Jacksonville State, GA Southern, etc. and get a chance to play. This opens up limited scholarships for better players. If your program doesn’t lose some each year, you are probably not being hard enough on them at practice.

Alphare, it really must be depressing to be a tech fan. I mean, year after year you lose to us, so now you have to resort to such in order to feel better. Sad. Truly sad.

Interesting that Coach Richt mentions that it is good for someone to compete for his job. I haven’t noticed much of that out of our 2-2 HC. Let’s not go soft on him. It’s all about the competition. We have to expect to win every game. We cannot afford a HC who is willing to lose a few on the front end and hope to approach respectability by the end of the season. A winning program must start strong, stay strong, and finish strong. How have so many of us lost sight of this simple truth?
Has Russ been trained up enough now to be able to stay on his paws all game long?
