Similar statistical comparison between Isaiah Crowell, Herschel Walker to this point

ATHENS – This is not at all to say that Isaiah Crowell is the next Herschel Walker — there hasn’t been a “next” so far — but their statistical comparison to this point in their respective freshman campaigns is remarkably similar.

  • Through the first four games of the 1980 season, Walker had 419 yards rushing on 77 carries.
  • Through the first four games of the 2011 season, Crowell has 411 yards rushing on 77 carries.

Walker had outscored Crowell 5 touchdowns to 3 at this point and, of course, the Bulldogs were 4-0 then as opposed to 2-2 now. Also, of note, Walker was injured early in the fourth game against TCU and was sidelined. Similarly, Crowell watched the second half of the Coastal Carolina game from the sideline due to injured ribs and an early blowout.

Walker finished the 1980 campaign with a freshman record of 1,616 yards and 15 touchdowns. That does not include his 150 yards and 2 TDs in the national championship win over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Bowl stats were not included then.

At Crowell’s current pace he would finish the regular season with 1,236 yards and 9 touchdowns.

Here’s the game-by-game comparison:

WALKER<————————————–>CROWELL

Opp., Att-Yards-TDs—————————Opp., Att.-Yards-TDs

Tenn., 24-84-2————————————-Boise St., 15-60-0

Tx A&M, 21-145-3———————————S.Carolina, 16-118-2*

Clemson, 23-121-0——————————–C.Carolina, 16-86-1

TCU, 9-69-0**————————————–Ole Miss, 30-147-0

Total 77-419-5————————————Total 77-411-3

* 1 pass reception for TD

** Injured/sidelined during game

Here’s how some of Georgia’s other great backs looked statistically in their first season the last 20 years or :

  • Rodney Hampton 126-890-4
  • Garrison Hearst 162-717-5
  • Knowshon Moreno 248-1,334-14
  • Tim Worley 116-627-9
  • Kregg Lumpkin 112-523-6
  • Thomas Brown 172-875-8

Herschel got 1,200 yards over the next 7 games. He also got over 200 against florida that year didn’t he?

IC will do well to get to Moreno’s numbers

With florida’s strong D-line factored in, I would say 1,200 yards would be outstanding.

There will never ever be another Herschel Walker, here or anywhere else, so please stop the lame “next…” talk. Having said that, IC’s numbers are impressive, I like his style and attitude. He is going to be a great player!! Keep your head on straight, Isaiah, stay humble like Herschel (now that’s a comparison I can get behind), and work hard. Go Dawgs!

I am impressed with Isaiah’s burst of speed in just 2 steps. He can hit a hole and get 4 yards easier than most running backs. I wish he could control his excitement after a big play. I see the coaches try to get usher him back to the huddle instead of taunting the defender. He’ll get more carries than most freshman running backs as long as Richard “shoe string tackle” Samuel is his backup. I hope it’s not windy Saturday. Samuel may not get to play.

1. Crowell is not well conditioned, averaging 4.5 ypc vs. Ealey’s 6.6 ypc in 4th quarter, 40%+ LESS than Ealey, Crowell’s even worse in the 3rd qrtr, 3.7 ypc.
2- Ealey & Moreno both averaged 5.7 ypc their fresh season’s
3- Ealey had 11 rushing td’s last season, Crowell’s on track for 6 rush td’s.
4- Murray’s been sacked 11x so far, Crowell’s passblocking isn’t good.

Anyway, yes, Ealey had 11 TDs last year. 5 were against UK. He didn’t get his 2 TD last year until his 6th game. And of those six games he only had 1 were he averaged more than 4.8 ypc with at least 10 carries and that was against a not so improved Vandy team. AJC writer Chip. As ya’ll can see from my name I am a Tech fan from birth. Your efforts to compare anyone to that MANCHILD are laughable & a complete waste of your’s & your readers time. Someone might someday have better stats, but only 2 running backs have been compelling enough to make me want to watch them whenever I had the opportunity–Herschel & Gayle Sayers. Some big difference, Walker was bigger and probably faster. Walker did not need to come off the field after every 3rd carry. I suspect Walker was in far better shape than Cromell appears to be. Remember, Walker played most of the National Championship game with a separated shoulder and still gained 150 yds and an MVP award. I am of the oponion it is the coach’s fault Crowell is out of shape, conditioning has become an issue for most of our players in the last 3 years. I have a good friend in the athletic dept. and he feels the same way. As a team, we are not in shape, remember Latimore ran all over us in the 4th Qtr. we were out of gas, that was the difference in the game at “crunch” time.

I am not sold on Isiah yet. Watching from the end zone Saturday in Oxford, I saw the hole open up and figgins was blasting thru it and Isiah was tippy toeing looking, peeping , hiding trying to pick his way thru. Isiah could not get close enough to Figgins to keep the linebackers from picking him off. Maybe if Isiah could put his hand on Figgins back and follow him thru the hole, he could break one.

Also, I was in Knoxville in 1980 when Herschel made his debut. I saw 10 out of 12 games in person that year and have only seen two running backs since then that I would even put close to HW. Bo Jackson and Knowshon. Every time HW, Bo or KM got the ball, I felt they could break it for a td. When Isiah gets the ball, its just run to the pile and fall. He is not a game changer….yet.

Plus, Walker goes down vs TCU, and Barry Young ran for 100+ yds the rest of the game. The college game is pass happy now. That said, the ‘11 OL is still a work in progress, so maybe Crowell’s start to the season is impressive in comparison.

How about UGA’s D having given up the 2nd least yards in the SEC? With Granthams recruits barely getting their feet wet early in year 2? Lookout SEC offenses. Its going to be a nightmare and more hard hitting as Granthams recruits learn the system and are actually starting at all the positions in the next couple of years!

Duke
NC State (who got worked over by Cincinatti)
Miami (who got beat by Maryland and Kansas State)
Virginia (who couldn’t beat Southern Miss)

Don’t talk to me about schedules dude. UGA let of the gas completely on Coastal Carolina by the start of the 4th quarter. They went for every 4th down and basically ran the ball with anyone and everyone while playing 2nd and third string players.

Herschel was one of a kind. There have been other great backs at UGA and elsewhere but none of them had Herschels speed, power and strength. IC is going to be a good one for UGA if he can stay healthy and add a few more pounds. He may have carried the ball 30 times but most of those yds were in the first half. He petered out in the 2nd half and needs to be in better condition something Herschel was always in. If Herschel suited up today he’d still outgain IC albeit almost 50 years old. Keep on thrukin’ herschel and go DAWGS.

Question. Serious. put some thought into it. We have a bigger stadium than LSU. Our Athletic Dept. is the second most profitable in the country, behind only Texas. The state of Georgia is ranked 5th in the country in producing quality high school talent. ESPN tells us over the last decade, they have us ranked #2 in recruiting. Then why pray tell has LSU won a title in the last 5 years and currently have the number one team in the country, and why we haven’t beat a ranked team in 2 years? What IS the difference?

crackbaby

Comparing IC or anybody to Walker is inappropriate and completely unfair.

In 1980, Coach Dooley’s defense was a force. So that team likely had better field position and more possessions. As I recall vividly, Lindsey Scott was also a constant threat for the opposing defense.

I hope IC can ignore all his critics and just play for his teammates, coaches and the University. Good luck to the kid.

Well now that one’s got me thinkin’. Dell was good in high school, but ended up playn corner. The best HS running back I saw (from Columbus) was a gentleman from Columbus High School named Tobin King. Sadly, he injured his knee and did not recover, but that man was lightenin’. Broke off huge runs against Bainbridge and LaGrange. I think he got hurt as a sophomore.

This is precisely why other fan bases hate us, ridicule us, and rip us all the time. QUIT THE COMPARISONS!!! Herschel Walker is the greatest college football player of all time, so having another Herschel come along will not happen. Just let these guys be their selves, instead of calling them failures because they fail to live up to the greatest player in college history. Jasper Sanks, Danny Ware, Kregg Lumpkin all got this label thrown on them, and it is sheer disappointment when they don’t pan out, pretty much destroying their names. Let these guys just play ball. I understand it’s all fun to talk about the possibilities, but it solves nothing and doesn’t prove a thing. Crowell will be good like Knowshon was, so let’s just see what the kid does before we start the comparisons yet again.

None of these kids were alive when HW played at UGA and it is incredibly unfair for anyone to write or blog about the comparison whether you preface it or not. It is worse than every QB in Denver being compared to John Elway or every QB that will follow Manning and Brady.
Dooley ran the ball way more than Richt does.
In UGA’s offense, Crowell would best be compared to Moreno. I would expect him be used the same as well.

Consider changing your moniker to TAMPA BULL, at least until next year when CMR is gone a new regime and attitude is brought in.

Huh??? They never “spread” the ball while Herschel was there. That’s why Lindsay Scott, a first round pick, barely got 100 catches the entire time he was there. And competition? Hardly. They played a few good teams but the SEC is much better now than in the early 80s.

As we sit today, IC is about the 14th best back in the conference. If Kniles Davis were playing he would the 15th. On top of that he is about the 3rd best freshman back in the conference. Look around at other programs that are redshirting their “stud”.”dream team” or “all american” freshmen running back and you will find programs that are established. CMR has been at UGA for 10 plus years and he is rebuilding? He should be reloading year after year.

+1 on TampaDog’s reminder that Mr. Dooley didn’t have a habit of spreading the ball around among the playmakers on that 1980 team (nor the ones in 1981 or 1982). With the talent that U.Ga. had on offense and defense during Herschel’s time in Athens, the Dogs should have won at least two national championships. To Coach Dooley’s credit, he did at least get the team to more than one game in which U.Ga. could have won the national championship. That feat included having the team ready to play the first two games of each season.

Alabama-Florida (18), Oct. 1. Marquee SEC rivalry lost its juice last year when the Gators tanked on the season and were routed in Tuscaloosa. Truth is Walker ain’t no Bo Jackson. The sound of UGA fan’s butts slamming shut if the Gators lay the lumber to Bama, would be the loudest roar Crowell might hear all year.

Ever see Bo turn on a fast ball ?

The only comparison that should be made between Herschel and Isiah is this, while at the University of Georgia will they be loyal to the team and the school with their efforts and their abilities. But for those who did not actually attend UGA much less graduate or have the priviledge to bleed and sacrifice for the team, the school and most of all the “G” on their hat, then it’s understandable that they have no sense of true loyalty to a program. That loyality did not and does not have a clause in it that says only when we’re are winning. So, some of you folks should look at your level of loyalty to this program at UGA before you critize the program, coaches or players. And don’t pull the “I want our program to be a winning program” card because that just shows your loyalty to a winning program, not a program you’re willing to support no matter the record. You should be glad that the players and coaches at UGA have more loyalty to the program than the majority of these bloggers do. To be sure everyone is entitled to their opinion, but contrary to popular opinion if your only investment at UGA is the cost of your ticket or pay-per-view then your opinion really doesn’t matter. Herschel Walker was WORLD-CLASS SPEED and in his 3 years at UGA, we amassed a record of 33-3 with AP Poll rankings at seasons’ ends of # 1, # 6 and # 4. Not 1 time did Herschel Walker get up sprint 10-yards downfield to an opponent’s face and taunt him.

Isaiah Crowell is NO Herschel Walker, now is he ?

The facts are there are 227 players in the 2011 recruiting class alone, who are faster than Isaiah Crowell. I watched Herschel Walker. At no time did he go gasping for air. Herschel Walker ran wide and out-ran the opponents. Herschel Walker ran up the middle and steam-rolled the opponents. Herschel Walker went airborne and flew over the opponents. Herschel Walker is a gentleman.

Now, what is this obsession in the AJ-C to talk about Herschel Walker every bloody day. Is this all UGA will ever do, is sit here and talk among ourselves about Herschel Walker 31 years later ?

Get over it.

You’ll brought this on yourself.

You were the ones who ran in here and called Isaiah Crowell our Savior for this football program, down the drain as it is.

You were the ones who ran in here and proclaimed, wait until next year.

You were the ones who ran in here and called this the DREAM TEAM.

You were the ones who ran in here and proclaimed Mark Richt the # 4 best coach in all of college football.

You were the ones who ran in here and said Aaron Murray is the GREATEST AND BEST QUARTERBACK IN THE ENTIRE SEC.

Now, when it is absolutely clear that we cannot beat the teams who end the season in the AP Poll Top 10, cannot beat the Top 25 teams either, and that we lose to teams who are not even Top 25 teams – you are the 1st to post that NO ONE ELSE can have any opinion – just ONLIEST YOU can.

I got news for you with your posts of SHUT UP.

And, best if we ignore each other.

And, all that bro-ha-ha.

You get what you deserved, and that it is to have it crammed back down your throats.

I did not start it with you, none of us did. None of us, either, have any plans of allowing you to turn these blogs into a ONLY YOUR OPINION can heard forum.

It’s YOUR FAULT.

You started it.

We will end it.

This football program is a lost ship at sea without a rudder.

Now, go play your Coastal Carolina and Ole Miss and Missy State and come running back in here to proclaim our greatness and SEC Champion and National Champion – it could happen you proclaim again today for THIS season and tell all the rest of us to SHUT UP.

Good Luck on that.

YOU STARTED it. None of your Kool-Aid is true. NONE of it. Excuse me for noticing it.

Think about when Richt had the offensive team line up on the new indoor practice field for Richt and Crowell missing the running back position? So they could see it through Richt’s panorama window?

Crowell isn’t better than Ealey or Moreno’s 5.7 ypc average their freshman seasons.

crowell’s projected rush td’s, 6, don’t compare to Ealey’s 11 last year.

Crowell’s 2nd half rushing, 4.5 in 4th qrtr, don’t compare to Ealey’s 6.6 ypc. Ealey was in a lot better shape.

Crowell’s given up a lot of sacks to Murray in 4 games, 11 sacks, Crowell’s on track to give up 33 sacks, which would be 25% more than Ealey gave up, and 350% more than Moreno gave up. Crowell needs to improve passblocking.

Crowell’s record so far is 2-2, doesn’t compare to Ealey or Moreno’s or Walker’s freshman seasons.

Running back stats and overall stats are nice, but national titles are nicer. So if the Dogs go 8-4, or 9-3 this year, or just barely break-even.

Two easy wins over two of the weakest teams in college football, then all of a sudden everyone is optimistic in Athens. Ole Miss and Coastal Carolina is nothing to write home about in terms of wins.

After watching what Alabama and LSU are doing to their opponents, UGA is Single-A of college football, while LSU, Alabama and OU are Major League. I suppose everyone in Athens is satisfied and blindly loyal to a tanked program.

Keep up the great work! Maybe Bill King should replace CMR.

Alabama and LSU have it right…..start with your defense then work from that point. Alabama totally destroyed Arkansas and PSU, and they are going to mow down anything in their path. Why? Nick Saban (i.e. the coaches coach).

Saban nor Miles will tolerate last year and are professional to the core in terms of college coaching. CMR and the Athens program pales in comparison to Alabama, LSU and even OU.

I think comparing IC to HW is unfair until IC retires from professional football. HW made himself a legand by his performance both in college and the pros, and he continues to build on it today. IC doesn’t even have a season of college under his belt.

The trash talking is something that bothers me but I also see it as generational. IC is of this era and HW was from the 80s. Different times and different accepted behaviors. What really matters is how well IC plays the games. Will he make us speak about the great IC? Will comparisons even be necessary? When I discuss with friends the greatness of Hendrix, I don’t need to bring up Jimmy Page.

I see Crowell as needing improvement in at least 5 areas:

1- Passblocking
Murray has been sacked 11 times in 4 games, and is on track to set a Georgia record of 33 sacks.

2- Conditioning
Crowell runs great in 1st quarter (over 6 ypc), good in 2nd quarter (over 5 ypc), terrible in 3rd quarter (over 3 ypc), ok in 4th qrtr (over 4 ypc). You can tell he’s been exhausted in the 4th quarters, he’s only scored 1 rushing td in the 4th quarter and his ypc are way down form the start of the game. I know backs like Ealeyand Walker were amazing in the 4th qaurter, Ealey was over 6.6 ypc in the 4th quarter last year.

3- Leadership
The team is only 2-2. Crowell needs to work on his intangibles, leadership, etc. Walker was 4-0 in freshman season and led team to National Championship. Moreno led team to No. 2 finish in 2007.

4- Breakway runs
His breakaway speed has not been impressive, no long runs. Ealey went for 44 yards last year, Walker had some long ones, so did Richard Samuel his freshman year. Crowell doesn’t seem to have that higher gear once he gets into the open field.

5- Fumbles
He has now had 2 fumbles, one vs. SC, and another last game.
