ATHENS – This is not at all to say that Isaiah Crowell is the next Herschel Walker — there hasn’t been a “next” so far — but their statistical comparison to this point in their respective freshman campaigns is remarkably similar.
Walker had outscored Crowell 5 touchdowns to 3 at this point and, of course, the Bulldogs were 4-0 then as opposed to 2-2 now. Also, of note, Walker was injured early in the fourth game against TCU and was sidelined. Similarly, Crowell watched the second half of the Coastal Carolina game from the sideline due to injured ribs and an early blowout.
Walker finished the 1980 campaign with a freshman record of 1,616 yards and 15 touchdowns. That does not include his 150 yards and 2 TDs in the national championship win over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Bowl stats were not included then.
At Crowell’s current pace he would finish the regular season with 1,236 yards and 9 touchdowns.
Here’s the game-by-game comparison:
WALKER<————————————–>CROWELL
Opp., Att-Yards-TDs—————————Opp., Att.-Yards-TDs
Tenn., 24-84-2————————————-Boise St., 15-60-0
Tx A&M, 21-145-3———————————S.Carolina, 16-118-2*
Clemson, 23-121-0——————————–C.Carolina, 16-86-1
TCU, 9-69-0**————————————–Ole Miss, 30-147-0
Total 77-419-5————————————Total 77-411-3
* 1 pass reception for TD
** Injured/sidelined during game
Here’s how some of Georgia’s other great backs looked statistically in their first season the last 20 years or :

WhatUpDawg, best words I have heard from a Tech fan this month on here. I think IC will become great. Great now? Too early to tell but he is showing worlds of talent and is on pace to become one of the best ever at UGA. Has he talked some smack? Yup. But nothing like some of these “wish he was on our team” trolls and “oldtimers” have made it out to be.

True dat! A much better line. There is also the argument that it is a much different game/defenses now as opposed to the early 80’s. There is no “fair” comparison to make of Herschel to anyone that wasn’t playing in his day. I contend if you wish to make a Crowell comparison, make it to a Lattimore or any other playing under like conditions

I think 1 4 GT has it right. No need in comparing anyone with those two. Especially IC. The one rb out there that I love to watch is in South Carolina. That young man has his head on straight, plays the game it should be. He is a closer in the 4th. And he pops up and goes back to the huddle without any trash talking. And he has carried his team to a 4-0 start. IC could learn alot from ML.

All this negative crap on these blogs is just disappointing. The things said on here are classless and as a human being I am ashamed at some of the comments made about these kids. Crowell is the best RB we have had in years and for people to bash him because of his looks or because he doesn’t act the way you feel he should is wrong.

The word on the streets is Richt is primed to insert Hutson Mason into the starting lineup. He thinks that it’s Mason that can transform the Dogs from the bottom of the SEC East to NEAR mid pack status. Don’t think I am CRAZY but what should be on the Bulldogs radar is a kid from ASHBURN GEORGIA in TURNER County. This wunder kid is tearing up middle school football fields in the South Georgia area! Word is Sabin and Dooley (Tenn) are already keeping an eye on him. Don’t let this kid in your own backyard slip away UGA!

Even as a devout Dawg fan I have to say, this article is crap. Let Crowell grow into being his own man and athlete on the field. Lets face it, Herschel was Herschel, there will never be another. Hopefully our grandchildren will be talking the name Crowell in similar fashion in 10 years.

What’s so sad is not that you’re comparing your RB to a legend.
What’s really sad is the fact that you have to go so far back in time to find a legend to which you may compare him.

Hell, for all we know, your team doesn’t even have a legend. If you’re a GT fan, even Stafford’s new favorite target, Calvin Johnson, doesn’t qualify as a legend.

Lattimore thus far is in a league by himself. He’s good and proven good. Not a flash in the pan. Dyer? Not so much. Crowell easily fits between the two and leans more Lattimore’s direction. Crowell has only started two games. 8 more games plus, toting the rock 25-30 times per game. He could surpass Lattimore. You seethe hatred and jealousy of Crowell. Was that your intention?

Kiss the Ring wants to compare a guy after 4 games to Michael Dyer now. Cool, but how about compare the two in their first seasons. Dyer took about 6 or 7 games to amass the stats that IC has. Lattimore is a great back for sure. But let IC get a season in and see where he is at before you go spilling your lack of expertise on the boards.

Crowell has participated in twice as many regular season losses as Herschel did. I saw every game Herschel played and NEVER saw him look toward the sideline, wanting to be taken out. Crowell is out of shape and has a heart defect—I hope he can overcome it becasue he is a very talented young man.

I realize that they did not used to include the bowl stats in the record books, but the stats ARE available and we do have computers (or just calculators), so WHY can’t the NCAA go back and add in the bowl stats so that playeras from the past get the credit many of them deserve. It is just stupid that they do not.

I know it’s hard to do, but please stop comparing ANY RUNNING BACK to Herschel. UGA has a long list of great running backs that would be considered an honor to be compared to. I’ve seen a lot of great backs( B. Jackson, M. Allen, B. Sanders, E. Dickerson, T. Dorsett)From now on, use those guys if you’re comparing anybody to Herschel. As for Crowell, I sure any rational UGA fan (shamefully, fewer and fewer are heard from on these blogs) would be satisfied with with a favorable comparison to Moreno, Hearst, or Hampton. In all honesty, I’d be happy if Crowell compares well with Musa Smith’s SEC Championship year.

Well Orwin Smith has 349 yards in 19 carries. Where does that rank him? Comparing Hershel to any of them 30 years later is stupid. Get back to us when Crowell breaks Walker’s record of 1600 + yards.
