Three Bulldogs don’t make Ole Miss trip due to injuries

Oxford, Miss. — Greetings from The Grove. Well, actually the press box at Mississippi’s Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. But I was just in The Grove, the legendary tailgating area in the center of the Ole Miss campus. I always make it a point to make a pass through there whenever I come here. It’s a truly beautiful campus with some great SEC traditions.

After my tour of the Grove, I spent some time on the field watching the Georgia Bulldogs warm up. Here’s a few things I found out before today’s 12:21 p.m. kickoff:

  • Damian Swann did not make the trip. The sensational freshman cornerback from Atlanta, who made his first start last Saturday against Coastal Carolina, suffered a groin injury and was not going to play.
  • Also not here is freshman cornerback Chris Sanders. He injured a shoulder during practice this week. So the Dogs will be a little thin in the secondary today. As it is, though, Sanders’ main duty was on the kickoff return team.
  • That probably explains why Shawn Williams is starting at strong safety today. So his stint at “Mo” inside linebacker was just one week. Sanders Commings, who played safety while Williams was at linebacker, is expected to start at cornerback.
  • True freshman Amarlo Herrera was announced as the starter, or at least first-team, “Mo” inside linebacker.
  • Also, wide receiver Rantavious Wooten got into some sort of auto accident — as in car, not scooter — in the last few days and did not make the trip. He has a concussion, according to UGA spokesperson Claude Felton.
  • As for those who did make the trip, offensive linemen Kenarious Gates (ankle) and Chris Burnette (knee) both are present. Gates will start at right guard after Burnette fell out with a knee injury this week.
  • Isaiah Crowell is here and he’s wearing his rib protector.

That’s all for now. Stay tuned for updates.

Except for two Ole Miss trick plays so far, UGA looks good on O and D.

The two trick plays have really made us look bad, especially the reverse. Well both; the reverse for a TD and the on-side kick.

Gotta correct for those, play more focused on special teams, continue the good offensive and defensive play, and get the win.

I know some will say, it’s just Ole Miss and we should win, but a win is a win. Hope we get it! .. Go Dawgs!

Some really good individual play on both the offense and defensive side of the ball.

Seemed to be an overall, good team effort.

Never could quite put the game away, but it was never in doubt.

Glad to get the win; 27 – 13.

Still got some work to do to get ready for Miss State. .. Go Dawgs!

Just gotta correct the special teams D on punts and on on-side kicks.

Murray still hums the ball too high, is inacurrate and is constantly in a panic due to his O line woes. We continue to drop easy balls, such as # 82 Mike Bennett and his TD MISS. Easy catch he muffed it.

As for Walsh, his mind is elsewhere. He needs to be told that we will use Bogatay if need be. Walsh has hurt UGA all year and in fact, cost UGA the SC game with his botched FG and PAT.

Tirck plays continue to make CMR look utterly clueless. We seem to not have any awareness of those possibilities. None.

Next week MSU. Win and live to coach another day, lose and bye bye CMR. It is what it is and it should be with his $3.6 million package, plus perks and tv and radio product endorsements.

10-2, SEC East Champs and a trip to the Dome and a chance to win 11 in the Cap One Bowl is what we alumni are expecting now.

Next week could be Dan Mullen’s dress rehearsal, although UGA could do far better than he.

Go Dogs.

Please Read Pollyanna’s post….Mark Richts Entire Tenure at UGA….

He is not a BIG GAME COACH. Those stats by pollyanna

3-10 vs top 10
17-26 vs top 25
and 10 more losses against Unranked…

sad….just sad…Mark Richt is one of the worst Big Game Coaches in SEC history, and when he starts losing to Colorado and Central Florida, he is pathetic. Very bad coordinators, make for a truly undisciplined, undercoached, out of shape, and just lousy team…

The Monger

September 24th, 2011
9:44 pm

Even when we outplay a team like South Carolina on pure talent, we give it away with an insane amount of penalties, stupid and costly turnovers, undisciplined coverage assignments, horrid and utterly confusing playcalls, very poor special teams plays, defense is not conditioned well for 4th quarter, missed tackling, players just look generally lost….take your pick of ways Georgia messes up on a routine basis….Its hard enough to beat well-coached SEC teams (of which we are not), but when you commit 4 turnovers and 8 penalties a game it is almost impossible and this is why Mark Richt is ….

3-10 vs. teams finishing in the AP top 10…

Not a good coach at all, with horrid coordinators, we need to run Richt out of town before this gets worse, and he wastes EVEN MORE terrific, talented football players that pass through Athens…

The Monger

September 24th, 2011
9:55 pm

Can someone Please pull the stats on Saban’s teams the last 3 years, specifically looking for number of penalties, and also number of turnovers, and than compare to UGA’s and that should give people an idea of what good coaches, who are prepared and understand the game can do (Bama), and what poorly executed plays of an even poorer gameplan (UGA)looks like. Those of course are things that show up for a good coach in the stat sheet for the most part, but things like having your offensive line playing well, executing perfectly, having your recievers run fluid, smooth routes, having your defense disciplined and attacking their assignments perfectly, tackling and wrapping up, making sure quarterback and running back know how to secure the ball and what ball security in general is, and having your defense know when to attack and when to not take a risk….Basically a good team like Alabama runs their offense, defense, and special teams to as close to perfection as they can get, and UGA is FALLING HARD on this coaching spectrum. Richt doesnt have his team ready in ANY of those regards…just sad…

“Is anyone other than me worried about Murry? He misses wide open guys..throws behind his receivers..has not beat an sec foe with a winning record!!!! I know I know look at his numbers yada yada yada…………………..don’t get me wrong I hope he wins every game for UGA from here on out but i just don’t think he gets it done when it’s on the line…..we shall see…hope he proves me wrong!”

I hope he proves you wrong too, Texas Dawg, sir. If he does, it will be the 1st time in his career. 11 carries for minus – 17 yards today, is in keeping with his career average of 1 yards per carry. “He is a college QB,” they say in reply to his inability to be a dual-threat QB – exactly. And, he runs up his stats vs 8 cupcakes in his entire career here – such as ball-hogging the TD run and ball-hogging the TD pass – the only 2 times we got to the 3-yard line of Ole Miss, seizing his opportunity to run up his stats vs cupcakes. 11 carries. 1 yard a carry career avg. Today minus 1.7. He threw himself to the ground all game long. 11 times he threw his little body to the ground. Actually more than that. He hasn’t beat an SEC opponent with a winning record ? He has not beat any team with a winning record, and will have been on this campus since practicing with the team for the bowl game 2008. In a little over a month, he will have been on this campus for 3 years. He has played 10 teams with a losing record for the season and beat 8 of them. He has played 7 teams with a winning record for the season, and lost all 7. He had 8 interceptions last season and 9 fumbles. This season he has 3 interceptions and 4 fumbles in 4 games, 2 vs cupcakes, again this season. He averaged 1.9 yards a carry last year and minus – 1.2 yards per carry this season. We have 9 fumbles on the season this year, and he is the main culprit with 4. We had 20 fumbles last year and he was the main culprit with 9. His interceptions and fumbles have come at key moments that cost us the losses, both years. Did you see anyone else get in the game for 1 play at QB today vs a patsy football team who lost last week to Vandie 30-7 ?

We had 475 yards of offense and only scored 27 point’s on the worst team in the SEC this year and only used Murray at QB. Murray is 2-9 against ranked opponents in the last 2 years. If CMR and Bobo wasn’t snowed by Murray and evaluated him fairly they would see that he doesn’t have what it takes to be a great SEC Quarterback. This was the perfect game to let Mason play the second half and see what he has but CMR continues to hope Murray becomes the leader they expect him to be. It will be interesting to see how far CMR will go with Murray and nobody should be surprised if LeMay and Mason both transfers without us even seeing what they have.

Wow. Lots of complaining here. I was at the game, and i can tell you–we dominated this one. Outgained them by 300 yards, 25 first downs to 9, completely shut down their running game, held their QBs to less than 50% completions with two picks. There were at least 5 drops by wide-open receivers or Murray would have completed 75% of his passes. Were it not for the trick plays (which we need to work on the recognition of) and the three missed FGs, we would have won this game 36-0.

Take the win and build on it. We need to keep getting better. Cut down on the mistakes and we could run the table. And there is NO team we play that outclasses us in the skills department.

“…Indian Dawg…Dear God, we could win by 200 and some of y’all STILL wouldn’t be happy….”

“…Bulldog Bob…I am happy to get a win on the road in the SEC. Good job Dogs! Got to clean up the slop on special teams…” Emphasize a “road” win; tough to do in the SEC.

“… heeldawg… Lots of complaining here…. i can tell you–we dominated this one…There were at least 5 drops by wide-open receivers or Murray would have completed 75% of his passes…” Dunno about 5 drops, but there were several. And the INT was a deflection off a missed pass.

“Monger and Polyanna”…please go root for Aldambama or LSU or… We rack up 475 yards offense, miss three FGs and it’s still Bobo must go. We get a win on the road in the SEC and it’s still fire Richt. You bring up S.C., even Darth Visor said we out played them and they were lucky to get the win. And, what’s last year got to do with a win at Ole Miss? Continually finding fault does not help the cause.

Lotsa positives: first, a win; 4 starters out; makeshift O line; held em to 34 yards rushing!; very good balance between rush and pass; Crowell is one thing, but Samuels IV and Thomas looked pretty good too; TEs had a good day; won by 14, shoulda been more but for the missed FGs…and beat the spread handily.

Yeah, lots of work to be done, especially special teams. But a win is a win.

Ole Miss also had 2 long runs called back. We got lucky on those. I am thrilled with the win and the fact the O ran up a lot of yardage. I am also happy with the D holding Miss under 200 yards. It does concern me that we that many yards on O we couldn’t put the ball in the end zone! Like I said the D played fairly well but add those 2 long runs for TD’s back in and they have over 300 yards.
I will take the win and look forward to next week, but they have a lot to improve before they can beat Florida or some others at this point.

You Jack Wads don’t know a darned thing about football. That becomes more and more apparent everytime I read some of these so called critiques.
First of all you can’t “add in the 2 long runs” Ole Miss had, because they wouldn’t have been long runs if holding didn’t take place. That’s like saying if you take Reggie Bush out of the picture, USC would have their National Championship back.
This team played well and if not for a couple of trick plays (which UGA needs to start using from time to time) and missed field goals, the score could have easily been 36-0. Ole Miss flat out couldn’t move the ball against what amounts to a second string UGA defense and UGA moved the ball up and down the field on them. What Bobo needs to learn is style points don’t win games, points do. He needs to use some imagination once he gets inside the opponents 30. And, my guess is they are holding back a little bit for the more worthy opponents. No point in showing your hand on the Flop (Texa Holdem term). They played vanilla against an inferior opponent Saturday and still dominated. A real football student would know there are great things to come from this group.

If anybody will beat them the rest of this year…it will be Florida and/or GT. GT may well wind up undefeated. They are playing awesome football right now.

@BIGMIKE, the only part of your post I could remotely disagree with is GT. They beat the snot out of 3 bad teams and against UNC, they looked beatable for sure. The only thing that could make them undefeated when they get to play UGA is the ACC being more than weak this year.

@damngooddawg, HELL YES you send Walsh back out there. You want to mess with an all-american’s head? Go for it on 4th and 1 at a spot you would normally send him out there. Might as well give him a memo stating in writing that we don’t believe in you any more. He is a veteran kicker at this level, and he has to be able to kick through it. Yes, you send him out and maybe even more so now.

Please ask what was wrong with Crowell in the second half. I have never seen anyone take themselves out of a game so often. He looked like a totally different back in the second half. Carlton Thomas was WAY faster to the hole in the second half. Crowell’s legs looked dead. How can a kid this young be in this bad a shape? I know he was hurt some during camp but I though that his conditioning would be leveling out by now so that he would be in as good a shape as the other backs. I know he had a good bit of carries in the first half. And I will admit, the kid took some brutal hits. That has happend to him every game. Not sure if it is running style or what.

Samuel trips and looses his footing very easily for a big strong back. If you touch his foot or ankle he is going down. Let Thomas have more carries in the first half to keep Crowell fresh in second.

TampaDawg

September 26th, 2011
9:24 am

Not sure about Crowell PreyDawg, but I think your analysis on Samuel is spot on. He rarely hits a hole with any explosion and doesn’t seem to have the balance and speed to take a run to the second level.

As for Crowell, I think the hits are adding up a little bit but if he keeps coming out strong in the first half, we (and he) will be ok. Carlton Thomas looked better Saturday than ever before.

How many missed field goals? Punt return 4 a touchdown. Onside kick. OTHER COACHES WILL RECOGNIZE THE DAWGS WERE WEAK ON REVERSES AND TRICK PLAYS. We did not score much in the second half and any good team will beat us if not corrected.

IC looked great. His mouth will get the dawgs a penalty in an important game. OCs sure has quietened his mouth alot on the field. AWte had a good day. MM from Valdosta is going to be a good player. Where is TK? Bennett is solid! Glad Murray played the entire game. He knows what is going on. OL is not consistant, but fair.

Lil Carlton Thomas did a great job! Where is Malcome?

Man, if I had a dollar for every Boo Malcome reference on here, I could fly up from Tampa for every home game.

Only one I disagree with from the above post is UT. No way they lose to UT. They can’t run the ball, down to 1 quality receiver and Da’rick isn’t one to be labeled with the number 1 receiver tag.

UF could be a strange game considering they will be coming off a three week stretch against Alabama, LSU and Auburn. Might be winnable at that point.

Thought so too early in the year, especially with two big wideouts but the secondary has played pretty well aside from the BSU game which Rambo wasn’t in and now UT is minus their biggest weapon.

Auburn took out 2 of MSU’s O-linemen and LSU injured a third one, so we have a shot. We have a shot. We have to take advantage of all of these good things that are happening for us.

We can win the Florida game IF Alabama and LSU beat them up badly enough. We have a shot.

Pray harder UGA fans… Pray harder! The Baby Jesus loves our coach, and so do I.
