Notebook: Richt laughs at label of ‘Hot Seat Bowl’ vs. Ole Miss

ATHENS – Georgia coach Mark Richt laughed Tuesday when he heard some media members were referring to Saturday’s game against Ole Miss as the “Hot Seat Bowl.”

“I knew that would happen,” Richt said, chuckling as he shook his head. “That was pretty easy to predict. You’d think they could have thought of something better than that. I think a couple of kindergartners could have figured out that one.”

But Richt wasn’t laughing when the subject turned to his colleague, Houston Nutt. What Richt has endured is nothing compared to the slings and arrows being aimed at the Rebels’ head coach this week.

In the wake of last Saturday’s 30-7 loss to Vanderbilt, Nutt was subjected to a Sunday morning meeting with Athletic Director Pete Boone. Boone followed that up by appearing before Nutt at his weekly press conference to discuss the state of the football program. Advertisements calling for his ouster were placed in five Mississippi newspapers as well as the Memphis Commercial Appeal. And nearly every question Nutt has fielded since Saturday has to do with his job security.

“I hate that for anybody,” Richt said. “. . . I don’t think anybody enjoys another guy going through something like that. We all know that we are pretty darn good coaches, and there’s 12 of us in the league and somebody is going to have a good year and somebody is going to have a bad year.”

Nutt, 53, left Arkansas to take over at Ole Miss four years ago. He won nine games each of his first two seasons but is 5-10 since. But it was the meek manner in which the Rebels went down at Vanderbilt that so incensed the Ole Miss masses.

“Anyone who was disappointed on Saturday, you can multiply it 99 times for me,” Nutt said. “It all starts with me. I appreciate Pete Boone meeting with the staff and myself and I appreciate what he did the last 24 hours. But now the bottom line is it’s up to us as coaches and players to do our job.”

Aron White gets national award

Tight end Aron White knew he was coming to Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall to have lunch with a bunch of children who were being rewarded for doing the right things. But he didn’t know the kids were there to honor him for his good deeds.

“I was really shocked,” said White, who was named one of 11 FBS players nationwide named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team on Tuesday. “They tricked me into coming over here to eat lunch with some kids who were doing really well and being kind. They had made a banner for me and knew the whole time. Then Coach Richt came in and announced it. Nobody told me. I was definitely caught off-guard.”

The fifth-year senior from Columbia, Mo., already received on undergraduate degree and has a lengthy resume of community service contributions, including volunteering at Camp Sunshine, Kudzu, the Boys and Girls Club and Habit for Humanity; visiting patients at Egleston Children’s and St. Mary’s hospitals and classes at local elementary schools; and leading an MLK Day Service.

“It’s something I’m very, very proud of,” he said of the Good Works award. “It’s probably the most prestigious award I’ve ever received.”

More opps for  Mason?

Richt stopped short of saying it had reached a point of critical mass where the Bulldogs had to find a way to play both Hutson Mason and Aaron Murray a la David Greene-D.J. Shockley. But the coaches clearly like what the sophomore quarterback is doing and have no reservations about putting him in games.

“Right this second that’s not something I would want to comment on,” Richt said. “We haven’t really gone further with that discussion, . . . talking about Mike Bobo and myself. But Hutson is practicing well and he’s playing well and he really runs the system well and he’s earned playing time in my mind. How we’ll manage that, I’m not ready to make any promises I can’t keep.”

Mason, a sophomore from Marietta, had created a buzz well before making his first appearance of the season against Coastal Carolina last week. Coaches and players raved about his play in preseason camp. Mason was 6-of-9 for 68 yards and a touchdown in less than a quarter of play.

But Aaron Murray is the unquestioned leader of the team. He has completed 63 percent of his passes for 672 yards and 9 TDs and 2 interceptions in three games.

Tyson back from ‘non-injury’

Why DeAngelo Tyson missed last Saturday’s game is unclear but, whatever it was, it wasn’t for an injury. At least that’s what Tyson said on Tuesday.

“I didn’t have an injury,” said Tyson, who Richt said missed the game with a back injury. “I was just told I wasn’t able to play because of what was going. Buit I’m doing whatever I need to get back on the field.”

Asked if it was a disciplinary situation, Tyson said: “Unh-uh, ” as in the negative.

Asked if he’d be good to go this week, he said: “Um-hmm,” as in the affirmative.

In any case, Tyson said he will play Saturday versus Ole Miss. The senior from Statesboro started the first two games of the season at the defensive end opposite Abry Jones and is second among defensive linemen with 7 tackles.

Injury report: Rambo hurt

Starting free safety Bacarri Rambo had to leave practice with an injury Tuesday and came back wearing a green, non-contact jersey. Rambo, who knocked himself unconscious with a game-saving hit against Auburn in 2009, was having his head area examined by a trainer. Defensive backs coach Scott Lakatos didn’t know what the nature or extent of the injury was but expects Rambo to play Saturday. Also, three-way threat Brandon Boykin left the practice briefly to have his right ankle wrapped but returned.

Meanwhile, junior split end Marlon Brown is “questionable to doubtful” to play Saturday due to a sprained right ankle that sidelined his last weekend. As a result, true freshman Malcolm Mitchell is slated to get his third start of the season. Richt was hopeful that offensive lineman Kenarious Gates (ankle) will be back to face the Rebels. He was able to practice with the second-string line on Tuesday.

They said it

“They’re going to be wounded and mad. But we’re wounded and mad, too.”

– Richt

Etc. . . .

Center David Andrews played the best of the three true freshmen offensive linemen on Saturday, Richt said. Tackle Watts Dantzler and guard Hunter Long were the others. . . . Coaching great Jack Harbaugh attended Georgia’s practices and spoke to the Touchdown Club of Athens on Tuesday night.

I think it’s time to sit Murray, Murray has still not beat a winning team, 0-8? The three turnovers against South Carolina were thingsa Mason wouldn’t have done.

You’re not going to sack Mason, he makes quick decisions like Kellen Moore. I don’t think Mason’s going to throw int’s either with the No. 1 offense.

Mason went right to Charles for a long td, somethign Murray’s been unabe to do for the last 2 games.

Mason had poise.

i like about Hutson Mason: Poise, accuracy, quick in pocket. He can also throw the long ball well, which will get teams out of the box. Murray lacks poise, the bigger the game, the worse he plays.

A logjam of talent at QB is a great problem!

Not sure the answer, but I am sure bashing Murray isn’t the answer Dawg “fans”. Fact is, he’s Preseason All SEC and 9-2 touchdown to interception ratio is pretty darn good.

The new guy is always the answer…till he ain’t! Jake, how could we know about poise when he’s never taken a snap in the heat of the battle in a close game?

Murray seems to get worse with starts, when you lose 8 for 8 against winning teams, you start feeling like you’ll find a way to lose, you get a losing mentality.

Murray really had to mess up to lose that SC game, but he did. Just like the UF game.

Need a new QB without the losing mentality. Need to get new QB lots of experience before MSU, Tenn, UF, Aub.

The Murray experiment is over.

Jake, another thing, blaming Murray for the the issues with UGA winning is a little….small minded. One player is usually not the answer to the problem. One coach, maybe. Not sure what games you’ve watched but Murray isn’t the problem. Check the line, both offensive and defensive for the issues!

Jake

The defense is solid, the special teams are good, the rushing unit is rolling, just need to find a QB who can score, keep the chains moving, and not give it away with turnovers.

Murray is NOT the guy.

Mason set all the records for the state of Georgia for td’s, yards, etc. He was over 70% accurate and threw over 40 td’s with only 5 int’s in the season his senior year. Threw 7 td’s in a playoff game. Took Lassiter further than they’d ever gone. Murray’s team won the state championship the year before Murray did, and the year after Murray left.

Tom Brady was overlooked. Mason is awesome.

“The Numbers Don’t Lie….” the amount of points scored by Georgia in that 7-9 stretch please? It’s not all ON the QB and when the team wins it’s not all BECAUSE of the QB; last I checked, this was a team sport and the defense (while improving) has been the culprit more often than not. Murray plays the QB position and always has, but that does not mean he is an SEC caliber QB. I don’t like his size, arm strength, and lately his decision making. To watch Stafford play and compare to Murray is not fair….Murray is a QB, but after Stafford we can now see the difference.

I am concerned with Murray, too. He is beginning to remind me a bit of Eric Zeir- a great QB with a lead. Zeir’s legacy is nothing like Green’s in that with 2 minutes left in a game and the dawgs behind, Green brought us to victory many times. Murray has yet to do that, if fact, he makes more mistakes than I had hoped.

You are the exact reason UGA is the laughing stock of the SEC. You care way too much about stars than the actual talent or potential. UGA has gotten more stars than any team could have ever asked for and still finishes subpar every season. It’s hilarious. UGA has an average recruiting class of like 5 ever since Richt has gotten there, Boise hovers around 67th in the country every year, and yet you get annihilated in your own back yard. Pathetic. Keep counting those stars, we’d love you to stay where you’ve been.

AUBURN, Alabama — So Auburn is moving to the SEC East with the addition of Texas A&M, and, now, apparently Missouri.

Auburn volunteered to move.

The EAST just got a little TOUGHER with addition of MIZZOU.

Here’s what we think we know: Auburn will be tossed in the same division with some traditional heavyweights, but also with some traditional rivals. Auburn used to play Florida and Tennessee every year before divisional play put an end to that. Auburn already plays Georgia every year. So, the new schedule would feature Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Kentucky and Vanderbilt from the East; and Alabama, for sure, from the West, and one or more West teams, depending how the SEC plays it.

You saw how bad SC was with 2 different QB’s in. Garcia is light years ahead of his back up, and Mason is light years ahead of Murray, really, ANY QB on the UGA roster could have beaten at least 1 of 8 vs. winning teams. Murray couldn’t.

If you look just at sacks, you’ll see UGA is USUALLY among the leaders in sacks allowed, but ever since Murray took over, SUDDENLY, the offensive line is being blamed for sacks allowed. Wasn’t a problem for Stafford or Cox or Greene. The kid just hangs on to the ball too long.

Actually they played as a team…you can go back to the year Stafford, Marino, et al vacated Athens and that was not a team, just a bunch of quality players…seems like when the younger guys are getting playing time, is when the team picks up…#1, #26, #82, #64 are getting a chance, they’re busting their butts, are making plays and the rest of the team are coming along grudgingly kicking and screaming…#11, #2, #7, #45, #60 have been trying for two years to light a fire under these highly recruited, underachieving group of uncoached, uninspired players that lack the team concept and worry only about themselves…start benching some of these under-performing yokels…just who is in charge? once again it all circles back to the coach…even Richt is showing some signs of life by taking over more of the game calling…the talent is there, now it’s up to Richt to put a TEAM out there and bench the ones not willing to go along

That might be true in the spread offense that Florida, Auburn or BSU runs, but it’s not true of every offense. You don’t need a hot-dog athlete at quarterback in a pro style offense, you need someone with a good arm who doesn’t make mistakes. I’m not really familiar with what Georgia is running this year, I’m just speaking in general terms.

If you have a very good defense, then you’ll want to play ball control offense and consume as much clock as possible. What style of QB you need depends upon what your overall strategy is. There have been many National Championships won by “mediocre” quarterbacks. The offensive line can make a good QB look bad — or worse. ;-)

Murray doesn’t seem to look as sharp this year. Could be the ’sophomore slump’. Lots of QB’s seem to experience it – thus the name. He may come out of it but it certainly doesn’t hurt anything to give Mason a little playing time for some insurance. From what I have heard about LeMay he is a fairly accurate passer with a more fluid movement. Who knows.

Jake,
You clearly have no clue what you’re talking about. Murray won the state championship with his high school team during his senior year. He broke his leg midway through the season and then came back in time for the playoffs and upset a highly favored team in rout to the championship. Murray isn’t perfect, but for God’s sake, he’s a SOPHOMORE. He knows what it takes to win. The team has just been on the wrong side of lady luck recently. Things will turn around and I guarantee it will be with Murray at the helm. Go Dawgs!

Jake

I think the SEC is becoming more and more about 1 guy being the vocal point of the offense. Cam Newton was that for Auburn. Tebow was that at Florida. Marcus Lattimore is that at South Carolina. AJ Green was that for us. There are a few exceptions to the rule: Alabama and LSU. But more more times than not, most successful teams have a bell cow that they go to in tough situations.

Now is regards to your assessment of Murray: I think Murray is having to readjust his passing this year. Last year he could lob it up to AJ Green and he would make the play. But now he’s having to learn to be more accurate with his throws, which I think is doable, but its going to take a bit of time. Now do I think Murray can be a Cam Newton where he carries the team on his back? No. But I think if you surround him with some playmakers, he can get the job done. UGA has seemed to have done that in the running game with Crowell, but we need a consistent playmaker in the receiving corp, and right now we don’t have one, yet another reason Murray has struggled.

And I completely disagree with your assessment on our defense: it is anything but solid! The offense played good enough to beat Arkansas,Florida and Auburn last year, but the defense put up no resistance whatsoever. But Mark Richt doesn’t believe in defense or in solid O-Line play, and hasn’t for years now. He recruits studs at the skill positions, but not in the trenches, and we have seen the results on the field. I loved David Greene and DJ Shockley, but neither of those guys would have won half the games they did with the defenses we have fielded the last 4-5 years. There is a difference between having a bad defense and a non-existent one, and UGA’s defense far too often has become non-existent in big games. When one side of the ball is non-existent, that is what we call a COACHING problem.

Richt can AFFORD to laugh at his predicament. He gets paid, win or lose. My problem with his performance is that he’s no longer worth the high salary. U.Ga. could easily find qualified applicants to take our team to six-win seasons for way less than $3 mil. per year. I don’t think that Dan Mullen or Kirby Smart is the answer to the question, who should be our next coach? We need to find someone like Fitzgerald at Northwestern: devoted to the program and his players, team-first attitude, and happy to be doing his job.

Jake, Joe Cox was undefeated in high school….look how that worked out. Murray has an insane amount of leadership and he is still learning. Let the kid grow up. Mason has played in two situations: 1) When we play a crappy team and we have 100% chance of winning, or 2) When we are in a game that is already over and he is playing the other team’s scrubs.
There is no reason that Mason should play….if Murray played w/ the O-Line Stafford had, he would be amazing! Chill out, breath, remember the fact that its a game, and enjoy life.

Joe

Cox was not given any mop up duty after Stafford got established. The only time he graced the field after the win vs ole miss was his fifth year senior year….Mop up duty is not experience…Richt did not give him mop up duty because UGa substituted the defense when the game got out of hand then the other team would score and make it close and Stafford would be put back in and Cox never got on the field in any significant pressured experience. Example was the GSU game. GSU scored three TD’s vs the defense and came within 13. Stafford never was substituted and then UGA ran the ball and ran the clock until they scored going back up by 20….That kind of thing happened several times those years.

Richt was absolutely right to react to the infantile ‘hot seat bowl’ characterization of this game the way he did. Someone here commented that some of Georgia’s coaches should have their ‘heads examined’…well I say that there are any number of, so-called, sports writers that need to have their entrails examined and even more here that are suckin’ Georgia fans that have the arrogance to talk as if they actually know something about this sport – whataya got, some fantasy football team so you think you’re a GM or an AD or something? Of course there are those that only get their enjoyment by tearing down others – that’s pretty much called sadism – but then when I think of how I’d like to be the one to ‘expose those entrails’ then maybe, when it comes to dealing with you trolls, I’m pretty much a sadist too…get ready cause you got a ‘guttin’ comin’ before this season is over.

As for the QB situation, young Mr. Mason will get his chances to show if he’s a better QB than Aaron Murray – times’ll get tough during games, Murray could be injured, who knows, but it he, Mason gets the job done he’ll get more chances.

Jake— How do you know, along with everyone else, that Mason would not have committed turnovers against South Car. Do you have a magical crystal ball??? It’s real easy to sit backl and point fingers after the fact. Murray is our QB and one of the leaders of this team.

Jake

Mason deserves a chance to lead this team. If Murray’s so good, why can’t Murray beat a SINGLE winning team (0-8 vs. winning teams). Murray’s ONLY wins are against teams like Coastal Carolina. Murray was the BIGGEST reason why we lost to SC & UF: 3 to’s vs. CC, 4 TO’s vs. UF. UGA was LAST in TO margin against ranked teams in 2010. Guess why? Murray lacks poise, he overthrows, he fumbles and throws too many picks in big games, and he ALWAYS finds a way to LOSE against WINNING TEAMS. 0-8 vs. winning teams, all we need to know about A. Murray.

Finally…Mason will hopefully get a chance…..like it or not- Murray gift wrapped 21 points for SC…..this is an all sec QB??????????????????????? I think Murray needs to know he will sit when he makes bad decisions……that can only make him better. When the game is on the line we need a QB/leader that gets us thru….not one that fumbles instead of taking a sack…..not one that tosses an interception in overtime……..not one who mishandles the handoff to a freshmen…….and not one that has YET to beat a winning team………sorry Aaron- you proclaimed yourself the leader of this team- time for you to stop puting your mates in a position to lose games…

Great talent at QB can be a curse and a blessing at the same time but it’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. That’s the issue here at UGA. Aaron Murray is a very talented QB with great leadership skills BUT I’ve often wondered if he’s the RIGHT QB for our pro-style offense. Let’s look at the tale of the tape:

OL average height: 6’3.5”

Murray: 6’1”
Mason: 6’3”

As a drop back passer Murray would have issues seeing over the OL so strategy suggests that he should be in the Shotgun to compensate for the height issue. As a matter of fact his high school ran a spread offense with him taking 95% of his snaps from the shotgun. Mason, by way of comparison, also ran a spread offense in high school taking the majority of his snaps from the shotgun formation; however, the “X Factor” would be height. Mason is 6’3” which is an advantage for up field vision. On paper neither man is the “right” player for this offense but Mason get’s the nod for his height. From what I have seen from both QB’s two things stand out which separates the two:

Decision Making
Accuracy

Murray simply holds the ball far too long in given situations; hence the high sack numbers against him. Spurrier pointed this out and the ESPN game day guys dogged him for it. That has been the universal knock against him and for some reason he has not improved from his freshman year. Mason, consequently, seems to make quick reads and gets the ball away very fast al la Kellen Moore. He is significantly more accurate with his throws and excels in the short to medium routes. He has excellent touch on his long throws also.

In the wings is Christian Lemay who’s 6’2” and is very mobile. When you look at his tapes you see he’s been under Center, in the Shotgun and has ran the option on occasion. Of course he’s going to be Red Shirted this year and by all accounts from the spring and Pre-Season needs some tuning up. Is he the “right” player for this offense? Time will tell.

Mason seems to be the “man in the middle”. CMR and CMB are not going to bench Murray in favor of Mason regardless of the situation barring injury. Lemay already seems to be the “golden” child in the wings so where does that leave Mason? I believe that Mason will transfer after the season; he’s simply too good to play second fiddle to Murray or Lemay. Look for him [Mason] to either do the JUCO route back to FBS or to a prolific passing team in the FCS.

Too much talent can be as a bad as too little. Georgia’s coaches and recruiting people need to focus on the “right” players for our schemes rather than the “best” so-called players as related by the talking heads at recruiting services.

If I were CMR I would start Mason against New Mexico State later in the year and see how he really does when the team and game are his to run.

I do think hutson has earned some series with the first teamers in a meaningful situation.

Pretty good problem to have but also dicey. Will Hutson be willing to redshirt next year with the hop of starting in 2014 as a senior? What about Christian Lemay? That young man and his father won’t let him sit for 3 years.

I still like the idea of playing 2 right now. You have to be able to manage it. Bobo?

If Murray gets hurt, we do have a solid backup

Don’t know why some of you would be satisfied to win 9 a year. Most old timers get acid indigestion at the thought.
Getting the team ‘up and running’ a third of the way into the season with the unreasonable expectation of winning 9 is a fine example of delusional thinking. Georgia is a basement dweller in the conference.
The military uses a term, command and control, to let everybody know who is responsible and accountable for different parts of a mission. The unit commander may have to delegate authority for different portions of an operation, but the unit commander is, in the end, accountable and responsible for the overall success of the mission. The buck stops at the commander’s door. The commander cannot announce that the first battle doesn’t count, and bring the troops to battle unprepared to win. The commander can’t watch his troops give away the second battle at the last minute, and not chew nails by the boxful. What are the replacements going to take from the commander’s reactions to defeat? Do the troops have respect for, and confidence in the commander? Or do the troops know that the commander has low expectations of them and himself?
The troops may have whupped some Coastal Carolina butt last weekend, but the troops still know that not much will be expected of them as long as this commander is at peace with himself. This commander just may toss in a loss to Old Miss just to help their guy be at peace with himself. Peace is good. Conflict is bad. Being the best you can be is overrated. It is so passe’. Everybody gets a medal. A little wine, some crusty bread, some stinky cheese, and a flashy medal.
The higher command at GHQ are rubbing their greedy hands over increased revenue with conference expansion. Increased revenue is now the mission. Nothing else matters. Higher command is at peace with themselves too.
Me, I got acid indigestion.

When MSU got good that was not good for Nutt. Losing to Vandy is never good. A win over Georgia is exactly what the doctor ordered. An immature Georgia goes into this game thinking they have got it won and a desparate Nutt may wake up and beat them. Nutt has been good at the big win Saturdays in his career the same way he can lose to a Vandy he can beat some teams he shouldn’t too. Georgia needs to be discipled and play four quarters. Not always a sure bet with these guys.

Richt is a total joke, and for him to laugh when a reporter points out the fact that he should be on the “Hotseat”, proves how arrogant he actually is. The reporter should have also pointed out that this game is between the 2 worst teams in the SEC also. For UGA to be in this position and for this guy to still be the head coach is a disgrace. Yet UGA fans still listen to what this guy has to say. This coach and his coaching staff have proven over and over again that they don’t have the talent to coach up players and to prepare a game plan that will win against quality competition. If UGA keeps this clown after this season after he wins 7 or 8 games, then UGA and it’s fans get what they deserve. UGA fans have accepted mediocrity for the past 30 years, so i don’t have alot of faith that they will change and demand more. Maybe a loss Saturday, and a loss against Miss.St will finally convince Adams and Mcgarity that this guy is nothing but talk and excuses. God we can only hope so. For any UGA fans to think that Richt and Bobo will give Mason a fair chance, forget it. That would mean the 2 clowns made a bad judgement in talent,OOPS, forgot Richt and his coaches know what the hell they are doing. Right. When you hear people talk about the best coaches in college football, you hear all the names above except for Richt. The common theme of every expert show is that Richt is soft and does not have the drive or hunger to be the best. I am surprised that the UGA fan base has tolerated this soft attitude so easily for the past 5 years. Playing with another coaches recruits does not reflect what kind of coach you are. But playing with the guys you recruited, signed and coached from the beginning is more of true reflection of your coaching ability.

Get real and stop defending a guy who does not want the job, but wants the money.

As for the morons comparing an unproven backup to the a sophomore who has in truth been told kept UGA in games against Florida, Auburn, USC twice and Tech that the defense of UGA could not stop or get a score against. Even the coaches at UGA realize that Mason is just a back up and in time the high school drop out from N.C will be the quarterback of the future if he can learn the playbook.

I think there’s no downside to playing Mason some. Get him some experience in case Murray goes down. And what if Murray is ineffective for a quarter and Mason comes in and leads us to scores? Play him more.

Murray is tough, and seems to be a leader, but unfortunately, and for various reasons that all aren’t his doing, he hasn’t yet lead this team to a meaningful win. Some of his miscues like missing open WRs, interceptions, and fumbles have led to losses in at least 2 or 3 games.

Maybe using both QBs can get us over the hump.

RiffRaff

It doesn’t seem to make sense to call Murray out after a 3 touchdown performance, but remember, this was Coastal Carolina we’re talking about here. Aaron Murray has the tools to be one of the best quarterbacks in the country, but he consistently makes incredibly poor decisions and shows poor form. He stared down his receivers on at least 40% of his passes Saturday, and a good defense would certainly take advantage of that mistake. In addition, he also regularly throws the ball into double and triple coverage, and threw at least one ball that would have been a pick-6 against Alabama or LSU.

You know who else looked really good, and certainly better than Murray? Hutson Mason. His numbers were also impressive, especially since he was doing mop-up duty, which doesn’t typically involve much passing. He also didn’t make a single questionable throw that I saw. If I were the QB coach and offensive coordinator (who is that, anyway?), I would seriously consider starting Mason if Murray falters again in a big game.

headley, I am a murray fan, but to keep referring to his pre-season designations is about like reminding everybody that we were pre-season #1 back in ‘08.

Pre-season honors mean nothing.

Hopefully, Murray will pick up some post-season awards, along with the rest of the team.

In the current climate, we would have played for the title.

Revisionist thinking says we SHOULD have played for the title instead of the 2 cheating programs.

That is on a par with Saban’s 2nd year at Bama.

I was in Jax for The Miracle On Duval Street and in New Orleans for our 17 – 10 National Championship win over ND (probably the finest college defensive championship game ever played). I recall the “Dump Dooley” days.

The difference is Dooley got better and Richt has gotten worse.

number of teams uga played in regular season that were ranked in ap top 25 at seasons end: 0

number of teams uga played that ended up with regular season winning records: 3 (clemson 6-5, so. carolina 8-4, florida 8-4)

We are not saying AM is a bad quarterback. He is still young and makes young mistakes. I think he puts too much pressure on himself. I see no problem pulling him out for a series or two when hes making these young mistakes. You want examples. How about 6 sacks to BS. Yes I know the line blocked like crap, but at least 2 of those sacks could have been avoided if he would have thrown it away. Then who knows what would have happened. There were a few series this past weekend where he didnt check off to his 2nd or 3rd receiver and looked real lost. Look, all Im saying is this. We all agree this is very important season for the future of this program, right? Then if the coaching staff cares enough to win, wouldnt they care enough to be sure the best players are on the field at the best times to win the games for us. Thats all Im saying.

“strange things indeed”, thanks for that wonderful expose’ on the 1980 season. And all this time, I thought we had a legit championship. Georgia should IMMEDIATELY renounce the 1980 season and the championships that were awarded.

But rewriting history…I thought only the victors get to do that.

One more thing, when you’re citing the opponents’ final records, you might want to add that one of the losses was to Georgia. Clemson, Florida and South Carolina’s records against all other competition would be 6-4, 8-3 and 8-3. Your analysis doesn’t make sense if you are trying to count a UGA win against it, right?

And no, Notre Dame probably shouldn’t have been in the Sugar Bowl that year after finishing the season 0-1-1, but for the first 9 games everyone thought they were great. But that was out of Georgia’s control. All you can do is beat whoever you have to play (ask Texas, whose perfect season in ‘83 ended with a Cotton Bowl loss to a 9-1-1 Georgia team).

And if you think that it is EVER easy to have a perfect season playing in a major conference, you haven’t watched much college football.

But I won’t dodge your question. If winning 8 games means Richt stays then I hope we win only 7. Yeah, I love my University and want the best for it. If that means we lose a game (or two) more than he needs to keep his $$ job then that would be my wish.

Because Les Miles doesn’t give a krap about his individual players feelings / warm and fuzzy hugs / etc in my opinion.

He began with great recruits from Saban and won with good coaching which translated into continued good recruiting.

So now he just loads up the lines, pulls who he thinks isn’t 100%, plugs another one in who is begging for some field time and…………wins.

Miles, Saban, Spurrier, and a couple of others in the SEC do the same…………but not Rev Richt.

After the last two dismal years and the woeful start of this season if The Dawgs can’t beat Ole Miss then Richt ought to agree to coach the rest of the season with the understanding he is released and we hire Auburn’s OC or the Mizzou HC (now there’s a guy who I think has the fire to coach in the SEC).

Godalmighty I can’t believe I’m at the point where I’m wondering if we will beat Ole Miss!

What has happened to our DAWGS!!!???

Problem solved, Ole Miss wants rid of H. Nutt, Uga after Richt’s hide; swap coaches just before game.

Q: How many SEC Head Coaches are on the hotseat?
A: 2

Q: Which program gets first choice of available replacement Head Coaches?
A: The program who fires their Head Coach first.

These are the cold, hard facts. Whether you love Coach Richt, or hate him, if this is to be his last season at UGA, then nothing is to be gained by keeping a stiff upper lip and waiting until the season ends. Either give the man a contract extension and a vote of confidence, or put him on notice that he is being relieved and start interviewing replacements.

I’m not advocating one path or the other. I’m only saying that waiting until the end of the season just to “keep up appearances” is a stupid move. Not only do you limit your hiring prospects, you also hurt the replacement coaching staff’s efforts at recruiting for next season by delaying the inevitable.

Richt needs to stop laughing and joking about “stuff’ and start taking his job more seriously.

Hey Pig,

Ya know, I’ve always thought it was best to wait until seasonend but you make a good case for the alternative.

I was concerned about player morale but how much worse could it get than 6 – 7 !?

If we had pulled the trigger after the UCF debacle last year, we could have had Muschamp in Athens for this season. Instead, he’ll be whipping our hindquarters for the next 15 years. Sure would be nice to play some .500 ball against UF, but looks like it won’t be in my lifetime.

Coach “How’s my hair look?” doesn’t consider our football results a priority. Not when there’s fashion shows to be staged, or more raw talent to be wasted. Let’s just focus on the hair, the fashion, and the paycheck and milk those rubes for all they’re worth.

Seems like for all his saintliness, he’d have some qualms about stealing his pay from us for all these years. He’s sure not earning it.

I guess everyone has a right to there opinion, but UGA has some asinine fans. And these blogs just add gasoline to the fire. Great job AJC, too bad Richt will be back next year. UGA goes 10-3 at worst!

@HD27

Gasoline has little effect if there is no fire present to begin with.

CMR go ahead and laugh, but one Coach will lose Sat and that could be the end of a career for one of you!!! Feel sorry for the guys goin thru this: that’s part of your job: getting paid $3M a year, plus free vehicles, free meals, free this and that!!! Feel sorry for the guy who works 2-3 jobs to keep his family a float and if he loses one of them, then his house could be foreclosed!!!

Gosh, this whole two quarterback question is SO HARD!

Like, if there were ANY OTHER leading SEC teams, say BAMA, LSU and SC, that were dealing with two capable quarterbacks and trying to figure out which guy is best to lead on the field, maybe Coach BOOBOO and RWRECKED could learn how to sort this kind of question out.

Dripping with sarcasm,

True that’s part of college football and this is just a phase. I mean even the LSU fans wanted to fire Les Miles, LOL! The fire will be put out at seasons end. Unless 10 wins is not enough for the high and mighty UGA fan base.

People everyone …. The Oline does need to improve but the offensive team has scored more than enough points to be 3-0…. The defense needs to improve and quick..Grantham needs to earn his pay…Good Night they could not stop Boise State and SC that game was horrible.. When a team scores 42 points and loses one must take a step back and say why or how did we lose this one…AM is a fine QB and he will rise to the top. Point being UGA needs to stop the other team 3 and out 3 and out punt and let BB return punts all day long…….

Would you Ajc WRITERS GET OFF THE Richt “hotseat” kick. You are hurting recruisting efforts. What will be, will be. But not because the AJC wished it so.

Les Miles has never been in such a precarious situation at LSU. It’s a long, long way to 10 wins.

Wow! Now it’s Murray’s fault? So he’s on the hot seat with Richt? Hurry up Sonny and find a new UGA before these idiots start blaming Russ! Ever thought it could be the negativity projected by the fan base that’s to blame? You folks are amazing! Go Dawgs! Once a Dawg always a Dawg! How sweet it is! By the way, will ya’ll complainers shut the door behind you when you get off the wagon cause we don’t need ya’ll hopping back on when the Dawgs prove ya’ll wrong!
