Georgia FS Jakar Hamilton transferring; ‘needs fresh start’

ATHENS – Georgia safety Jakar Hamilton is leaving the football program.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior from Johnston, S.C., confirmed that news to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday.

Hamilton, a former junior college transfer, was sitting out via medical redshirt this season due to a stress fracture in his ankle that developed in preseason camp. Unable to compete while other players have been asserting themselves at his position, Hamilton said he simply read the writing on the wall.

“It’s just personal issues, really,” said Hamilton, who started five games at free safety last season and played in all 13. “I was hurt and wasn’t going to be able to play this season and I just played it all out in my mind. [Bacarri] Rambo is having a good season, Shawn Williams is having a good season and they both have another year. And other guys are coming in.

“I just felt like I needed a new start and start fresh with another team.”

Hamilton said he plans to transfer but at this point does not know where he might end up.

“I’ve got a couple of schools in mind, but I’ve got to talk to my parents and see where I might best fit in. I’m pretty close to graduating so I’m trying to get my degree first and foremost.”

Hamilton said he met with head coach Mark Richt and they mutually agreed this was the best move for him. He was leaving UGA immediately and heading home.

Hamilton insisted that the decision was not prompted by any disciplinary issues.

“No disciplinary problems,” he said. “There have been some occasions that I might have had some attitude issues or whatever. But this really is just a case of me needing a fresh start.”

Hamilton, who starred at Strom Thurmond High School, transferred to Georgia after spending two seasons at Georgia Military College in Milledgille. A junior college All-American, he transferred to Georgia in 2010 and recorded 27 tackles and an interception last season.

It really is becoming alarming and bothersome as to why UGA cannot keep players in the system. I seldom hear this from other schools in the conference.

But best of luck, in whatever you do, Jakar. Wish you had exhibited the dedication we so sorely need in Athens.

And one more thing Jakar…. when you quote “I am so close to graduating, getting my degree is first and foremost”…… keep in mind that quitting mid-semester so that you can go somewhere else for more playing time is a bit contradictory.

I will consider you a DROP-OUT from here forward.

Now we are loaded with young studs at his position.

The guy has one more year to play football in his entire life, has some talent, but knows he is going to be a backup. I don’t think there is anything alarming or bothersome about him wanting to make the most of his last year.

no one is losing faith…he could clearly see the writing on the wall. there are 3 or 4 players in position now to start over JH. With all of the new talent just coming in, and already a few saftys in position that can clearly out perform him, why would he not transfer?

Actually looks like Richt is getting to be a little bit tougher. The “players coach” moniker may not be so fitting anymore with Richt.

The young man although could have put the team infront of himself, but those days are long gone. The “Hitman” does not have his eye towards a degree, but one rather towards the NFL. Someone should have been in this young mans ear and gave him a dose of humble pie rather than encouraging this type of behavior.

To those of you saying the players have lost faith in the coaching staff, you obviously 1. didn’t read the article and 2. do not follow Georgia football very closely. Safety is probably one of the deepest positions we have and he wouldn’t have much of a chance to come back and get some meaningful playing time next year.

Very surprised by the hostility on here towards the young man. Sometimes things don’t work out according to plan and sometimes a change is in the best interest of the player and/or the team. No hard feelings towards someone doing what they feel is right for them. Scholarships are one year commitments and he’s out for the rest of this year. Not finishing the semester out shows very poor judgment. Transfer if you must, but finish the semester. Makes you wonder who is advising these kids. Surely any responsible parent would tell him to finish the semester. Or is this another indication that the education part of the equation is totally unimportant to these kids and their families? Very sad.

Apparently most of the negative posters on this column cannot read. He said he’s redshirted for all this season, falling behind current players, and that there are others coming in. In other words, he feels like he cannot compete for playing time at UGA and feels he can elsewhere. I don’t read anything else into this, but non-readers do. If you’re not a UGA fan, what are you doing on this column anyway? If you are, you should know how to read. GO ‘DAWGS!

I wonder if him being injured, dropping-out during the season, or not completing thes semester (and perhaps graduating) could impact his ability to transfer to another d-1 school?

Seems to me his best bet would have been to graduate, then request a transfer to a D-1 school, ala Jeremiah Masoli, Logan Gray, etc….or maybe he would have graduated after the season was over, rendering him ineligible……..oh well…..

He seems like a good kid. The fact he articulated that he could have had some attitude issues in the past speaks well of his heart. I hope he does well and is able to perform at a higher level than what he was able to realize while with us.

Young man is getting some bad advice.

If you’re going to transfer, then you stay in school, Graduate, and then you can transfer to a D1-A program and cherry-pick which situation fits you best (i.e. Playing Time) like Russell Wilson did when he left NC State and is now starting at Wisconsin.

Leaving mis-semester does nothing for this young other than force him to drop down and play at the D1-AA level.

2- GEORGIA has lost 10 of its last 12 against ranked teams. (2-10 record)
3- GEORGIA is now 15-14 in his last 29 games
4-GEORGIA is 6-10 in the past 16 SEC games.

Damn, most of you guys are wrong both ways. First of all Jakar is hurt and is missing the whole season. During his down time he can see other good players moving up and he knows breaking back into the starting line up next year may not be possible….This guy has played everywhere he’s been. Can’t blame him for wanting to continue that by going some where else with the limited time he has left.. Jakar a good player, injuries have just changed his path, happens alot. Now, you can’t blame that on Richt, and letting him go, frees up another scholly for a new 4-5 year player…..maybe even a 3 year stud…best out come for both. Another year on the bench would not have helped us or Jakar. Quit slamming a Dawg that played hard for us last year and at least give him the respect to chose his own path after a major injury. I am not sure how transferring works when it comes to football players and athletes, but for normal students you usually have to spend 60 hours in a degree program at the school you intend on graduating from, so he has two years of school (if he takes 15 hours a semester which is more than an athlete normally takes I believe), and one year of ball left, so hopefully he makes the right decision to find a way to finish school, or finish at Georgia, and then move on to play his last year of football.

Richt has got to find players who are willing to do it whatever the UGA way is. Hamilton may be a great guy but he is quitting on this teamand his teammates. Now we can all say we have X, Y and Z talent in place and incoming, but look at that list that Tony provided- it shows us that we never know what may happen. Who would have thought we would have depth issues at LB,OL or RB? The point is that Hamilton should have hunkered down on and off the field and wanted to compete and show this staff just why they recruited him in the first place. In football you are always one play away from seeing the field. It is unfortunate that it has played out this way, perhaps Richt didn’t fight to hard to keep him on the team, that is info we are not aware of but at this juncture it looks like a short sighted me first athlete.

So Hamilton gets to move on, and seems to want to finish his degree. Good for him.

We lose a good player who had a self-admitted attitude problem from time to time. We free up a one year scholarship for a walk-on, say maybe second-string Safety, Connor Norman, from nearby Peachtree Ridge High School. It would be a nice reward for a kid that has worked hard for the last three years.

FYI – Stop saying “Bulldog Nation” because outside of Georgia, there is no Bulldog Nation. If you go to a Red Sox game in any stadium in the country, there will be a large contingent of Red Sox fans. In some cases, they will outnumber the home team. Hence, the expression “Red Sox Nation”. If you go see UGA play anywhere but Athens, there will be a small contingent of fans in the upper end zone, just like every other team in the country. Red Sox Nation actually exists (along with the Cubs and Yankees, but they have enough class not to rip-off the expression). There is no such thing as Bulldog Nation (unless you’re in Athens…which is not a nation).

Tony,

Agre with part of yoru post: The eight that you mentioned and don’t forget Caleb King… there is our missing depth. Agree that on paper it sure would have been nice to have another RB or two, another very experienced LB and two more contributing OL from this group. However, it seems that most of the names on this list weren’t the right fit for Georgia and I think it was the players fault that they didn’t succeed at Georgia and not Georgia’s fault.

Big difference between Ealey and Crowell. Washaun was not a true freshman when he had those two critical game costing fumbles. In addition, he drove a vehicle when he was warned MORE THAN ONCE by the staff that he didn’t have a valid license and then he hit a parked car in the parking deck and didn’t take responsibility. My son isn’t old enough to drive yet, but even he knows… if you hit somebody’s parked car, you leave a note apologizing with your contact info and that you will be responsible for taking care of the damage.

Between fumbles, missed punishment runs, irresponsible driving, and suspensions… you just couldn’t count on Washaun.

All that being said, I don’t think we would have won either of those first two games if all of these players had stayed at UGA. No way to really tell, just my instinct. Think we have deeper problems in the program than just depth (pun intended).

Don’t say that the team wasn’t trying to keep him or find opportunities for him. After the departure of King and move of Samuel over to RB, the staff was actually looking to move Hamilton to RB as well.

I attended UGA from 1980 to 1984- I admire Coach Richt more than just about any man I know. However, until Georgia starts recruiting great athletes with great character instead of “CHARACTERS” who are in it only for themselves, I’m afraid the program is going to continue to experience troubles. I’m not sure why this young man is leaving, but UGA needs to recruit and sign those young men who would do anything to be a Bull Dawg! Think back to David Greene and David Pollack. They were awesome young men who loved UGA . . . wanted to play there . . . and worked their tails off in the classroom and on the field. They made us proud and made the program better. They were NOT 4 star recruits – just great athletes with a tremendous work ethic. I think the Coaches need to get their priorities straight when deciding who to offer. Then, perhaps, we would see fewer leave the program when things don’t go their way.

Simple Fact: most people who read this post are not in the knowledge loop of the best question to ask … ? what is the smell factor ? this story has a disgusting ring to it that I heard directly from another former UGA player… story line goes like this, marginal player on the team gets the slightest injury and Richt tells him to get it checked out with an MRI… Richt tells the player “it shows up as stress factor and he will have to sit out”
medical fact is stress fractures are not an MRI diagnosis, this is smoke screen Richt hides behind to be less honest with the players on his intentions to have them part of the program
Fact is Richt does not value senior leadership and is into his cycle of dream team recruiting. Please be honest with young players and don’t hide behind bogus medical flim-flam

This is a tragedy. With his loss, UGA loses some of its vital and authentic Diversity. They can’t replace him with a Whitey, otherwise they will be violating the new Embrace Diversity and Inclusion mandate, which mandates that blacks get first shot at everything at UGA.

No Jobs for Whitey at UGA!

Whitey stays quiet and will not complain. They don’t want to be called “racist”.

Whiteys not wanted. Signed off on by UGA two top Whitey administrators. Will they be the last two Whiteys to hold top jobs at UGA? Will UGA become all black until it becomes all Hispanic until it becomes all Muslim until it becomes all Chinese?

1. Enhance and sustain an institutional climate that values and welcomes diversity and
inclusion.

2. Increase the recruitment and retention of diverse students, with emphasis on those
who are historically underrepresented.

No other fan base in the SEC treat their players and coaches with less respect than the current UGA Fans. No wonder the players feel that they are playing for the team and the coaches, while the student body and the Alumni are just showing up to games for the entertainment value only. Great fans inspire great player and great performances. Even multi-million dollar professional athletes perform better when they feel the love. Follow another school for a couple of years as closely as you follow UGA and you’ll see that to be the case.

I also follow Auburn football and they have the same issues. Really, it’s a non-issue. Just like employees come and go in any given business. You’ll never have 100% fit when you have an organization of 100 or more people involved. There is always attrition.

Really Dawg fans?…we are a classless bunch of redneck/hillbillies wishing this kid was gone. Just another example of D1AA talent running around Athens. Let’s face it…we stink. We can cry and brag about our recruiting classes but the reality is Tech is getting results from their recruits. Maybe we need someone who can evaluate talent and character in our program like Paul Johnson. I’m really starting to dread that Saturday after Thanksgiving.

I surely hope that the Dawgs will breakout the new unis against the Rebs. The new unis are sooooo cute and the gay boutique “The Boy Next Door” needs the publicity. When the Dawg players are wearing them and they get to trash talking and jiving around, it is beautiful to watch. The Ole Miss Rebs won’t know what hit them. Go Dawgs!!

Ohio State-

Jacson has 6 carries for 33 yards- hardly leading rusher at UAB

Fields was a 2010 recruit not a Dream Team Recruit

Outlaw is the 3rd leading WR with a total of 5 catches- drop the exageration

Grey- made catch? really thats the line you can think of?

Your points on a few are valid, but overrall you are off base on more than you hit on. Very good effort though.

Overall off-base that this coaching staff has mismanaged 26 Scholarship players who could be playing and are NOT playing ?

Excuse me, you listed no one that I should not have listed.

All are highly recruited and given great praise to Mark Richt for his recruiting.

When someone wants to know what happens to the recruits, here, I answered it for you.

my points are valid, you say.

You’ll sit there squirming in your seats, hiding behind your keyboards, trying for all your might, to come up, some new excuse for what 26 Scholarships are WASTED.

You only get 85 Scholarships to work with.

I just listed 26, none of which you said should not have been on the list – not 1.

26 Wasted Scholarships.

Mismanagement of the talent around here, totally. If you think there is some other point, you missed the point.

Be set straight on that.

The point is that this coaching staff CONTINUES ad infinitum ad naseum to waste the talent. I can and have named another 10 who are on the roster, whose talents continue to be wasted, jerked around by a coaching staff who plays favorites, instead of better players behind them buried on the depth chart.

And, you want to know why do they leave ?

Dream up your excuses, you have provided none to-date.

A guy who made 27 tackles last year, we cannot use for a play or 2 next season to give our Secondary a blow ? If you are going to give a Scholarship to a player and sit there and whine about what Alabama does, as you do daily in here, with their scholarships, at least have the common decency to admit that this coaching staff has specifically mismanaged these 26 Scholarships.

Let me know when you want to talk about others on this roster, still, who should have been playing more in the 1st 2 games. What would have it cost us to have played them ? I post about them all the time. The number of players who are given way too many snaps such as the way this coaching staff played favorite with Caleb King, and how this coaching staff never prepares a back-up Quarterback, and of course this list

ohio st –
First -Your first 8 don’t even count as they were seniors LAST year, so I don’t really see the point of listing them as players we are supposed to have for 2011.

Second- you can’t count players who are no longer here due to injury. Injuries are a part of the game and unfortunately they happen at every program. I fail to see how Trinton Sturdivant was mis-handled or his scholarship wasted because he had the unfortunate luck of being injury prone.

Third- as pointed out by others you greatly exaggerate the impact that some of those who left are having at the schools they transferred to.

So what else you got?

Mt. Pisgah senior QB Kyle Sloter stands 6-5 and 200 pounds. CMR, you should make good on your interest in this kid. Offer him scholarship. He has room to grow into his 6′5″ frame and is the prototype QB college and the pro’s look for in size and arm strength. FOR ONCE, IGNORE THE STARS BY HIS NAME. He can only get better.

So, you want me to remove 3 injured guys from 26, they are not wasted scholarships ?

You still have 23 that are wasted scholarships.

I trully wish the young man the best. Yes, we are able to keep key players that deserve playing time and have convinced the Coaches that they are SEC caliber players. Look at what conference we are in people it is not a patsy conference. We need to put the best of what we have on the field.

You will have to sit out whereever you go the rest of the season, hurt or not! To bad you don’t have the balls enough to stay at UGA and try to get a (in your own words) “a fresh start) next year! Your are telling everybody that you do not want to compete for a position, well get the hell out of UGA, we doing just fine without that kind of attitude, UGA has been trying to clean attitudes up this season and it is showing that change is better. So take a hike!

Good Riddance!!! overblown, overhyped, and underperforming would be the description of the so called “hit man’s” short tenure in Athens. Horrible tackler who thought that everyone should live up to his moniker…he hits them and expects them to just fall down. Doesn’t work that way. Wish him well but glad to see him gone.

I agree that there are way too many negative comments about J. Hamilton’s leaving; casting aspersions on CMR, etc. He’s leaving, and fairly honorably…leave it at that. His heart’s not in it, frees up another scholarship, etc. I wish him well.

Ohio State/Pollyanna….good stats and research. However, your conclusions are a stretch. And, are you saying UGA is the only major program with attrition? Please, give us some stats on some of the schools in today’s AP Top 25; or at least the Top 5.

Good luck Jakar, don’t buy into what these dim-wits are posting in this blog. It’s obvious the critics didn’t or couldn’t read the article.I don’t remember reading the word quit in the article. From an athlete’s point of view (which the majority of these posters are only athletic supporters) they should understand seeing the big picture and looking for playing time. Isn’t that whatJaybo Shaw did when he transferred from Tech to GSU? I also didn’t see where you mentioned anything about leaving because of the coaching staff either. These bloggers are small minded and uninformed. Good luck Jakar in your continued football career and get your degree. You’re more of a winner than any of these posters that are critizing you. And obviously more intelligent. Once a Dawg, always a Dawg.

That’s right, blame it on the player instead of Mark Richt. A player generally leaves because the coach has given him no hope.
