Cleaning out the notebook heading into Ole Miss week. . . .
Crowell’s ribs
Georgia coach Mark Richt indicated that tailback Isaiah Crowell aggravated his injured ribs against Coastal Carolina this past Saturday because he didn’t wear the special rib protection padding sports medicine director Ron Courson laid out for him. Crowell admits he hurt his ribs but that it wasn’t from a hit.
“I didn’t get hit on them this time,” said Crowell, who was initially injured in the first half of the South Carolin game. “I just twisted the wrong way. I hurt the myself, really. So I’ll have to go to treatment and stuff and get them worked on. But I’ll be ready for next week.”
Asked about Crowell in his postgame press conference, Richt said: “He didn’t wear his rib protectors to start the game and he probably should have. That’s what freshmen do. I’m sure he felt good by the end of the week and didn’t feel like he needed them.”
Update: Crowell is expected to wear rib protection for the Ole Miss game.
Orson Charles denied defensive debut
If Orson Charles and Todd Grantham had their way, the junior tight end would have played some defense late in the Coastal Carolina game. Charles somehow convinced the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator to let him have a crack at that side of the ball should the opportunity arise, which it did in the 59-0 win this past Saturday. But Grantham told him to get an OK from Richt and Charles was summarily denied.
“Before Todd did it, he asked me could he do it, and I said, ‘No.’ There’s no way,” Richt said. “He was mad at me, but I said, ‘Look, Coach Grantham kept his promise to you; I made him break it.’ But Todd was ready and willing and able to put him in there. I said, ‘No way.’”
Dogs vs. Dogs get noon start
The Oct. 1 Georgia-Mississippi State game was picked up by television on Monday and slated for a noon start. It will be broadcast by the Fox Sports Network (FSN).
It will mark Georgia’s first appearance on FSN this season. The Bulldogs have appeared on FSN six times overall and are 4-2 when playing on the network.
Georgia got passed over by Alabama at Florida, Auburn at South Carolina and Arkansas-Texas A&M, all of which are being considered for a CBS 3:30 p.m./8 p.m. doubleheader

Agree Lex… The O was the problem in the first 2 games.. The D gave up 24 vs SC & vs BSU AM was horrible.. Coach needs to sit AM sometimes when he’s ’struggling’… The only way any starter sits is if he’s injured.. Once announced a starter (even if they’re a FR or SO) they cannot lose their job…

Another lesson not learned by the Freshman, if the coach calls you out, whether you’re right or wrong you don’t challenge him, especially in the media. Crowell should have just apologized. Just another “small” example of who’s “not” in charge in Athens. And yes, we pick up on all of it.

I’ve never said anything as a matter of speculation Cmon, and I always paraphrase my “opinion’ with “IMO”. This isn’t my opinion, I read the first three paragraphs of Chip’s blog, this page, and read conflicting opinions of what happened, one by the HC, the other by the Freshman. I stand by what I said, when the coach lays out a rib protector, you wear it, or clear it with the coach. Who’s appears to be in charge I might ask again? Now in my honest opinion you’re one of the ones who’s allowed this program to degrade to the level we’re now in by tolerating the IMO, lack of leadership by our HC.
As for IC, I’ve only had praise for him ability wise. I did say he needed to be somewhat more humble prior to the USC game as far as his saying “people will be comparing him and Lattimore”. Oh and I did say I thought he should get a haircut. If anyone’s trying to make something out of nothing, I speculate it would be you.

the defense is better than last year.
The offense has done the following:
Stunk up the GA Dome
Given SC 21 points directly and 7 more indirectly(fumble return to 5)
Scored 42 versus Sc
scored 59 versus a HS team
The offense has turned the ball over and that is a key part to a successful offense-no turnovers.
They get a C from me
42 points versus SC was great but in my book they netted 14 because they gave 28 back

He is a “reactionary” person vs a “proactive” one. He “responds” to a crisis vs “preventing” one. I know it’s far easier to sit back as we do and criticize and evaluate one after the fact, but his learning curve is over. IMO, he should be at the top of his game in year 11, not starting over. His recent teams have done nothing to give me any confidence to predict a Georgia win regardless of who we play(CC being the exception)
I will be the first in line to cheer these coaches and players on but if we continue to give games away, we won’t win. That’s on Murray and the others making the mistakes. Murray has played 16 games now. When he saw the DE coming, he should have just taken the sack. Instead he tries to do a miracle, fumbles and it is 6 points and we are down 10.
I need to see the elimination of those kind of plays. That is coaching my friend.

I hate these noon kickoffs. Those and our pitiful scheduling have made me strongly consider dropping my tickets after 37 years. More than a little bad football hasnt stopped me from getting season tickets for 37 years..but our new pathetic scheduling philosophy combined with our reduced stature might just do it for me next year…Here we are again this year stuck with 12 or 1220 kickoffs because we have a bad schedule and bad record.. Last yr we had only one game with late kickoff.. This yr looks the same and….
Has anyone looked at the home schedule for next year? read it and shake your head in disbelief. It is the most pathetic ,sorriest, unattractive home schedule I can remember in 37 years of ga football. I cannot believe our new philosophy is now annually 2 good home games and 5 bad ones..see below
Sept 2012 home games
Buffalo/ Florida Atlantic/ Vandy…that is pathetic
Oct only one home game..Tenn
Nov Ole Miss/ Ga Southern/ Ga Tech pathetic Chap 2
That is 7 home games, 5 of which I wouldn’t watch if they were in my back yard. Absolutely pathetic , embarrassing schedule. Somebody look at that schedule and find me a home game besides Tech that starts later than 1220. It isnt there. 5 crappy games prob 6 early starts.
I know we add Clemson for one hpme game in 2014, and that Bama Ark and LSU come once every 5 years..even adding those in ..that is less than half of the games in the next 5 years are against quality opponents. By my count, we have 16 home games in the next 5 years against either Tenn, SC, Tech, Aub, (2 or 3 games with each) and LSu, Ark, Ala. and Clem (1 each).
Every other game , a total of 19 out of the 35 games,is either against terrible non conf competition like Coastal Carolina, or Ga Southern, or its Vandy Ky Ole Miss or Miss State.
With schedules like that, we better be winning big or the sellouts are not going to happen. And at last check, we weren’t winning big.

It may take UGA a series or two just to get an understanding of what he is doing, but as weak as Ole Miss is this should be a second half walk over, however playing on the road in the SEC is always much tougher than we think.
I would not be suprised that Nutt runs an entirely different offense this weekend in front of his home crowd.
For those of you who have never been to the grove at Ole Miss, you must visit and enjoy. One of the finest atmospheres for college football you will ever attend for a pre game. One major bonus is the women. Coeds, hot moms, cheerleaders, grad students, the women are hot. Enjoy!

For those of you expertly breaking down the offense and defense of UGA, and which unit is the best/worst and which has done it’s job or not…I think you are forgetting one important thing – the oppenent.
UGA’s offense and defense isn’t out on the field by itself. Most turnovers can be looked at two ways…forced or not…meaning that the opposing team just might have something to do with whether UGA looks good or not.

Actually, all you statisticians are too generous when you say the offense gave up 21. When Culver returned that fumble the the 5 and then USC scores, I wouldn’t charge the defense with giving up that 7 points. To be fair, offense gave up three TD’s, and then the punt team, well made me want to eat my gun.

Just read the press conference at Ole Miss with AD Pete Boone appearing at Coach Nutt’s weekly press conference and he gave him the ” support” statement and that he expects the coaches and players to look at themselves and do more. Could you do any less losing to Vandy? And almost getting shut out?
By the way, after Pitt and Syracuse joined the ACC, it left a door wide open for FSU to walk. Call me foolish, but now the ACC is a full blown Basketball conference first and many many folks at FSU want to get out while they can. One knows personally that the FSU Athletic board met Saturday morning and they discussed several options and one high on the list was joining the SEC if they could get approval from the UF legistlators in Tallahassee. The wheels are turning.

But anyway, Georgia plays both of them this season. Ole Miss should be a guaranteed win. Houston Nutt is a dead man walking.
MSU looked impressive against Memphis, but who wouldn’t? They didn’t fare so well against Auburn and they lost 2 starting O-linemen in that game. Then they lost a third starting O-lineman in their first possession against LSU. In spite of that, the game that they played against LSU should give the Dawgs reason to be concerned. This game won’t be a guaranteed W.

But to your original question, I do not think Missy St is as good as they were last year. Defense is the same, slightly better. Offense has a lot of work to do and likely won’t show up this year. Relf is a good QB for a bad team but, doesn’t cut the muster as a good QB on a good team. Missy has neither. They’ll lose more games this year than last IMHO

As somebody who was able to balance academics and sports with relative ease I do not understand the difficulty of making a respectable grade. I knew upon reading your attempt of ridicule that there was something not quite right about GT having the highest scores in that nation. It was out of a small pool of 53 schools the best but that is still only 53. I only glanced quickly but I did not notice any private institutions. I did see UGA was not in the bottom ten. Of course from numerous interviews in the past GT players have conducted I noticed they on average have no better of a grasp of the Englisg language than do athletes at UGA – maybe worse. Then there is the new NCAA testing that will argue UGA is on par with GT and 2nd in SEC only behind Vandy. That is what I recall (note that) from the 2010 & 2011 reports released by the NCAA.

Freshmen are called that for a reason. coach doesn’t have to watch Crowell suit up to be sure Crowell is suited up CORRECTLY. Some lesser human being has to watch what Crowell suits up in. That would be Crowell. Crowell be thinking about Crowell. Crowell not be thinking about anybody else on team. Crowell now gets it easy at practice. No full contact. Simple. Crowell already down to three or four star recruit BECAUSE Crowell believe Crowell know best. What say coach? coach say, again, just what he should not say.
coach should say to Crowell, ” Sit your butt down, Crowell. No practice, because of your stupid selfishness, no play”.
But I expect too much of coach. coach coaching like freshman.

Cedrick, wouldn’t it make a lot more sense to put in our inexpereinced backups at LB when we can, instead of wasting time with the fancy of a young man who is never going to be a contributor at that position. Isn’t our shortage of experienced Lb the best reason not to let Charles in there? (aside from the idea of ill afford to loss him on the o-line)
The story was about him wanting to get in if there was a blowout, when it didnt matter, not making any significant contribution. Nobody was speculating that he would be any immediate help at LB. We already have quite a few very highly rated Lb that we need to get PT before some TE coming over to a postion that he has no idea what he is doing.
Why would you think Charles would be a “better use these players” at Lb than Ray Drew. Feloughi needs PT. Stripland.Vasser. Wilson. THESE are the subs that we need the PT, not a TE joking around.
I’m just quessing that nobody would be saying nice things about Richt if Orson Charles got hurt playing LB in the 4th quarter of a blowout.

The last lame duck coach we played in their stadium was a guy by the name of Dan Hawkins. He was fired about a month after beating an AJ Green led UGA squad from a school where a winning season is considered a success in a state that produces fewer division one prospects than Stephensen high school alone will this year.

We played a soft easy schedule last season and out of 13 games, only 5 ended up ranked teams. We beat NONE of them. So far this season, we have played 2 ranked teams and Florida is the only other at # 16 (since Georgia tek at # 25 obviously will NOT be ranked when the season is over, having beat NO ONE either.) that we play this entire season. We have a SOFTER easier schedule 2011 than we had in 2010. Directly, you can attribute both the loss to Boise State and to South Carolina, on never sacking either Quarterback – while they both SACKED our QB until the cows came home. It LOST both games. So, Saturday vs a 1-AA FCS team, and not a good one at that, we cannot sack their QB even 1 time. And, you can’t run in here FAST ENOUGH to make up your EXCUSES for -0- sacks YET AGAIN Saturday. This is NOT a team on the rise, but a team with fans who are EASY. Great job here. Never get put on the spot by the fans. Fail. Promise one thing deliver the opposite and they will HAVE YOUR BACK, not support the program to do better than we have after 1983. You are the problem we have around here

if you are going to post this every 5 minutes, at least please get is correctly worded :
1-GEORGIA is a combined 0-5 against teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 25 in 2010 and is 0-2 for 2011 against 2 teams who obviously will end in the AP Poll Top 25 this season. There is one remaining hope for a 3rd team this season to end in the AP Poll Top 25 in today # 16 Florida. But, as everyone knows where you are ranked when you play means NOTHING, it is where they finish the season, that does matter and is the only poll ever published for that season.
2- GEORGIA has lost 10 of its last 12 against teams ranked in the AP Poll Top 25 the day they played each other
3- GEORGIA is now 15-14 in Mark Richt and his coaching staff’s last 29 games. All 14 losses were followed closely thereto by Mark Richt and his coaching staff blaming the players. Every time.
4-GEORGIA is 6-10 in the past 16 SEC games. I don’t know what this is. Nor, do I believe it has any relevance compared to the actual facts that UGA is 13-13 vs SEC East teams after 2005 through today.
5- GEORGIA is 3-5 in their last 8 games going back to last season
6- GEORGIA has won 1 of it last 4. (and it wasnt a powerhouse we beat today)
You don’t get the Pollyanna of them riled with incorrect posts. What it is that will rancor them is to tell them the truth. Then, log in the next day outside of work, and see how many have become converts, sir. Further, I believe it is 2 main areas of concern for all of us who love this football program, not necessarily and blindly defending this coach or especially his coaching staff.
(ITEM 1) Mark Richt in his 11 years is 3-10 vs teams who finished the season in the AP Poll Top 10
(ITEM 2) Mark Richt in his 11 years has already 10 losses to teams who did not finish that season in the AP Poll Top 25.
For you see, he NEITHER beats the great teams, nor does he beat the truly lousy teams, either.
Have a great day, sir.

Arthur Lynch is just one of the players being wasted.
Mark Richt has averaged the # 7 recruiting class, averaging both Rivals and Scout for all 11 classes, and yet is 13-13 vs SEC East teams after 2005, and has beat only 3 out of 13 teams who finished that season in the AP Poll Top 10 – all 3 of those years he actually did beat a top team in fact, he lost 4 games that season, lost 3 games that season, or lost 4 games that season. He has also lost 10 games the previous 10 years vs teams who did not finish in the AP Poll Top 10. You do not accomplish these LOSSES with THIS TALENT, without significant WASTED TALENT.

Ken Malcome. 100 meter and 200 meter star on track team. Redshirted last season. Not played, like Ray Drew in any game all season long. Then, we play a weak team, and out we trot him. For 1 play. All America.
T.J. Stripling. All-America. Another player played out of position, just exactly like Ray Drew now too. Not played him at all, then put him in against Coastal Carolina, made a tackle, took him back out. It’s what this “coaching staff” of Mark Richt does.
Mike Thornton. Consensus All-America. Yet, again, played out of position. Redshirted all last season when he most assuredly should have played, obviously. This season relegated to riding the pines because he is not a coach’s favorite. We play favorites, you do know that, don’t you ? Sent to the bench never to see the light of day all this season. Then, we play Coastal Carolina, put him into the game to make 1 tackle, and send him right back to the bench. Are the coaches afraid if they play these guys that we might see how good they are ? That they might actually help ? They certainly could not hurt. Now, can they ?
I am not going to sit here and talk with you about all the players Mark Richt and his “coaching staff” have wasted for 11 years now. I am going to say again that you do not have the # 7 recruiting class on the average every year for 11 years and go out and be 3-10 vs teams who finished that season in the AP Poll Top 10 and 10 more losses to teams who did not even finish in the AP Poll Top 25 without

Reason #1009 to hate dog fans. You whipped Coastal Carolina and now your chest is bowed and you want the SEC to know you’re going to run the table. THere is not a team in the SEC that wouldnt have whipped CC. You played 2 quality teams and your team lost them both. You havent won a quality game in over 2 years. Keep telling us just how good the dogs are.

1. Crow-well probably didn’t think he needed any pads playing against a high school team.
2. Any doubts left that these ‘playas’ are running the team instead of the coaches? Look no further than (1) Crow-well ignoring what Dtr of Sports Med designed for him to wear, and (2) Orson Charles’ whinning about not getting to play on both sides of the ball against the high school team.
3. Treating players like your golfing buddy worked for Bobby Bowden – for awhile, but these days, it turns them into ‘playas’ – as shown by 14-14….
4. Maybe Nutt vs. Richt should be re-named the “Hot Seat Bowl”.

You have a point. Nutt has a long history of winning at least one game that he should obviously lose. Only question is whether this game qualifies as an obvious loss for Ole Miss?

So we weren’t motivitated to play CU last year despite the fact that we were on a 3 game losing streak? Will we be motivated this week? Losing 4 of our last 5 (I don’t count last Saturdsay’s exhibition), one would think we wouldn’t exactly be overconfident for Ole Miss.
I don’t think CU beat us because they surprised us and we weren’t motivated. I can’t explain the reasons why they beat us, but I don’t think it was because we were overconfident coming in off a 3 game losing streak.

It might be good strategy for Georgia to lose this game. If Nutt loses this one, then Ole Miss might just fire him before the season is over. If that happens, then they’ll hire Georgia’s new coach out from under us.
Oh well… even if Ole Miss hires Rich Rod, we’d still have a shot at getting Houston Nutt to come to Athens. That would be a step up.

The total lack of discipline continues ad naseum. Nobody is afraid of Richt. If you didn’t follow instructions at Alabama or Florida you would be disciplined. Instead Richt holds him up to a public chastising because he can’t or won’t do anything himself. The postings that say “I wonder if it makes him less mobile or more prone to fumble” are completely missing the point. The point is there is no leadership or respect for leadership. Everyone is making their own decisions instead of it being a team decision. This is a ship without a rudder.

No way
UK has done a bigger selling the hype job than Richt and Georgia ever dreamed of cooking up.
UK is baaaaaaaadddddddd and not in the cool good way.
I went Saturday night and it was brutal. The fanbase is furious. Charlie Strong played a true freshman QB from Miami after the starter went down and also played a lot of other freshmen and sophomores. He is out recruiting Joker in Kentucky and with this win, has even more momentum there.
The QB for UK actually is pretty good but their OL, which was supposed to be great(where have we heard that before?) is pitiful. They have the Clemons kid from GA at RB and he actually is pretty good. He should be at Georgia right now backing up Crowell and Samuel could be starting at LB.
I say florida will struggle a little early because UK’s defense is actually not bad but the UK offense won’t get anywhere against Florida’s defense.

Boykin only needs to know a couple of things about the offense to make some contribution. Charles would need to understand so much more about the defense as a whole to play MLB and not be a liability to everyone around him.
We are deep at TE, but appearantly nobody is better than him or they would be in there. I could buy the depth argument more if the question was about taking a 3rd stringer TE (or OLB) to help at MLB. But we are talking about taking the best TE and having him play totally unprepared at a spot where we already have real back-up recruited to play LB that need as much PT as possible.

I am not sure I know what you guys are smoking, but I really want some. The “O” has been the problem so far this season??? How does Grantham’s poor “D” get off scott free? They were pushed around by the Boise “O”, and just how much pressure did they get on the QB?? ANSWER: NONE. And just how many points did USCe score? They knew going in that they had to stop Latt and put the game on Garcia’s shoulders, and how many yards did they hold him to? The Defense should be held equally responsible for their poor start.

First to address the themes of today’s column: (1) No matter how the injury was aggravated, Crowell needs to listen to the coaches and the trainer, lesson learned. (2) I vaguely remember in the Donnan era, Charles Grant moving into the offensive backfield and blowing out his knee on a sweep play. With that in mind, Orson Charles is way too valuable on O to risk getting hurt in a blowout playing around on D. Good call Coach.
As for the comments ripping Bobo….we all get it, Bobo is overmatched and has a limited skill set when it comes to running the offense. Imagine, if Richt is offered the chance to stay, and brings in an OC of Charlie Weis caliber (horrible HC but very good OC.) The NFL is loaded with coaches that could make our current pro-style offense one of the most productive in the nation, and more importantly move the chains on CRITICAL third downs.
