Cleaning out the notebook heading into Ole Miss week. . . .
Crowell’s ribs
Georgia coach Mark Richt indicated that tailback Isaiah Crowell aggravated his injured ribs against Coastal Carolina this past Saturday because he didn’t wear the special rib protection padding sports medicine director Ron Courson laid out for him. Crowell admits he hurt his ribs but that it wasn’t from a hit.
“I didn’t get hit on them this time,” said Crowell, who was initially injured in the first half of the South Carolin game. “I just twisted the wrong way. I hurt the myself, really. So I’ll have to go to treatment and stuff and get them worked on. But I’ll be ready for next week.”
Asked about Crowell in his postgame press conference, Richt said: “He didn’t wear his rib protectors to start the game and he probably should have. That’s what freshmen do. I’m sure he felt good by the end of the week and didn’t feel like he needed them.”
Update: Crowell is expected to wear rib protection for the Ole Miss game.
Orson Charles denied defensive debut
If Orson Charles and Todd Grantham had their way, the junior tight end would have played some defense late in the Coastal Carolina game. Charles somehow convinced the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator to let him have a crack at that side of the ball should the opportunity arise, which it did in the 59-0 win this past Saturday. But Grantham told him to get an OK from Richt and Charles was summarily denied.
“Before Todd did it, he asked me could he do it, and I said, ‘No.’ There’s no way,” Richt said. “He was mad at me, but I said, ‘Look, Coach Grantham kept his promise to you; I made him break it.’ But Todd was ready and willing and able to put him in there. I said, ‘No way.’”
Dogs vs. Dogs get noon start
The Oct. 1 Georgia-Mississippi State game was picked up by television on Monday and slated for a noon start. It will be broadcast by the Fox Sports Network (FSN).
It will mark Georgia’s first appearance on FSN this season. The Bulldogs have appeared on FSN six times overall and are 4-2 when playing on the network.
Georgia got passed over by Alabama at Florida, Auburn at South Carolina and Arkansas-Texas A&M, all of which are being considered for a CBS 3:30 p.m./8 p.m. doubleheader

Critics….How is Charles’ request any different that Boykins or Smith? Fact is..we have more depth at TE than any other position. Hell, I’d love to see Charles at middle line backer!! He’s a pure athlete…and from all your damn comments…you beotch about playing the best talent out there!! Some people make no dang sense!!

@Gay Dawg your only slightly annoying by the way , Charles might very well be a beast on defense. Remember sonny what the Bear used to say to win you but your 11 best players on defense and start hitting people…

WDE – Bera did not win by putting offensive players on defense. bear won by paying every player he could. there is a reason most of his assistants went on to get their teams put on probabtion.
Also this is not 1955 or not Madden. You obviously know little about football other then what you garner from playing Nintendo.

No way
UK has done a bigger selling the hype job than Richt and Georgia ever dreamed of cooking up.
UK is baaaaaaaadddddddd and not in the cool good way.
I went Saturday night and it was brutal. The fanbase is furious. Charlie Strong played a true freshman QB from Miami after the starter went down and also played a lot of other freshmen and sophomores. He is out recruiting Joker in Kentucky and with this win, has even more momentum there.
The QB for UK actually is pretty good but their OL, which was supposed to be great(where have we heard that before?) is pitiful. They have the Clemons kid from GA at RB and he actually is pretty good. He should be at Georgia right now backing up Crowell and Samuel could be starting at LB.
I say florida will struggle a little early because UK’s defense is actually not bad but the UK offense won’t get anywhere against Florida’s defense.
Florida 27
UK 10

Boykin only needs to know a couple of things about the offense to make some contribution. Charles would need to understand so much more about the defense as a whole to play MLB and not be a liability to everyone around him.
We are deep at TE, but appearantly nobody is better than him or they would be in there. I could buy the depth argument more if the question was about taking a 3rd stringer TE (or OLB) to help at MLB. But we are talking about taking the best TE and having him play totally unprepared at a spot where we already have real back-up recruited to play LB that need as much PT as possible.

@AltamahaDawg I didn’t see where Charles was trying to play MLB, that indeed takes more detailed knowledge and practice , I didn’t see where he was talking about any set position. So I assumed (and it bit me) that he was talking about free safety or more likely DE on a passing down where he might speed rush the QB.

@Gay Dawg back that statement up silly boy…did Bear ever get caught cheating ? And how can you prove he couldn’t win without cheating if it was never proven he was cheating. On second thought I don’t even think your happy…I think your a over 50 overall wearing 300lb fella named Otis.

I’m sure we could have put him in at DE to rush the QB in the final moment of a lopsided win. Why exactly would we have done that?

I am not sure I know what you guys are smoking, but I really want some. The “O” has been the problem so far this season??? How does Grantham’s poor “D” get off scott free? They were pushed around by the Boise “O”, and just how much pressure did they get on the QB?? ANSWER: NONE. And just how many points did USCe score? They knew going in that they had to stop Latt and put the game on Garcia’s shoulders, and how many yards did they hold him to? The Defense should be held equally responsible for their poor start.

First to address the themes of today’s column: (1) No matter how the injury was aggravated, Crowell needs to listen to the coaches and the trainer, lesson learned. (2) I vaguely remember in the Donnan era, Charles Grant moving into the offensive backfield and blowing out his knee on a sweep play. With that in mind, Orson Charles is way too valuable on O to risk getting hurt in a blowout playing around on D. Good call Coach.
As for the comments ripping Bobo….we all get it, Bobo is overmatched and has a limited skill set when it comes to running the offense. Imagine, if Richt is offered the chance to stay, and brings in an OC of Charlie Weis caliber (horrible HC but very good OC.) The NFL is loaded with coaches that could make our current pro-style offense one of the most productive in the nation, and more importantly move the chains on CRITICAL third downs.

oh yeah, by the way, this was stated on the Paul Finebaum show earlier this week. He compared the Ole Miss and UGA programs and said that both were “Low Profile” jobs, when discussing the possible future of Gus Malzahn. I mean, he is about right. Uga is no better than the 8th or 9th best team in the SEC.

Joemac, that’s hilarious. Bet everything you have that Gus Malzahn would set a land speed record from Auburn to Athens if he were offered the HC job at Georgia.
