Notebook: Isaiah Crowell’s ribs, Orson Charles on D and Dogs vs. Dogs on FSN

Cleaning out the notebook heading into Ole Miss week. . . .

Crowell’s ribs

Georgia coach Mark Richt indicated that tailback Isaiah Crowell aggravated his injured ribs against Coastal Carolina this past Saturday because he didn’t wear the special rib protection padding sports medicine director Ron Courson laid out for him. Crowell admits he hurt his ribs but that it wasn’t from a hit.

“I didn’t get hit on them this time,” said Crowell, who was initially injured in the first half of the South Carolin game. “I just twisted the wrong way. I hurt the myself, really. So I’ll have to go to treatment and stuff and get them worked on. But I’ll be ready for next week.”

Asked about Crowell in his postgame press conference, Richt said: “He didn’t wear his rib protectors to start the game and he probably should have. That’s what freshmen do. I’m sure he felt good by the end of the week and didn’t feel like he needed them.”

Update: Crowell is expected to wear rib protection for the Ole Miss game.

Orson Charles denied defensive debut

If Orson Charles and Todd Grantham had their way, the junior tight end would have played some defense late in the Coastal Carolina game. Charles somehow convinced the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator to let him have a crack at that side of the ball should the opportunity arise, which it did in the 59-0 win this past Saturday. But Grantham told him to get an OK from Richt and Charles was summarily denied.

“Before Todd did it, he asked me could he do it, and I said, ‘No.’ There’s no way,” Richt said. “He was mad at me, but I said, ‘Look, Coach Grantham kept his promise to you; I made him break it.’ But Todd was ready and willing and able to put him in there. I said, ‘No way.’”

Dogs vs. Dogs get noon start

The Oct. 1 Georgia-Mississippi State game was picked up by television on Monday and slated for a noon start. It will be broadcast by the Fox Sports Network (FSN).

It will mark Georgia’s first appearance on FSN this season. The Bulldogs have appeared on FSN six times overall and are 4-2 when playing on the network.

Georgia got passed over by Alabama at Florida, Auburn at South Carolina and Arkansas-Texas A&M, all of which are being considered for a CBS 3:30 p.m./8 p.m. doubleheader

All indication would point to redshirt JB if he didn’t play Saturday, everyone else did. I would like to see Richt spread the reps at QB more between Mason and Murray. I don’t see what it could possibly hurt. I think a clear Number One is advantageous but that doesn’t mean Mason should only see “mop up”. If Richt’s serious about “contending” for the East he needs a capable back up, he’s only one play away from being a starter.

Sounds like Georgia Tech math there DawinLex. Think its time for you to recognmize there is plenty of room for improvement on both sides of the ball and that we finally played well on both offense and defense against CC. Just need to keep seeing that the next few weeks so we can prove to doubters such as yourself that this team can still win a lot of games this year.

True Mobile. Looks like we are losing a couple of seniors in the OL. Anyone know how we stack up next year on the OL? No depth this year and not a lot of up and comers. I know we have 3 or 4, but aren’t we only playing one Fr. this year?

JB @ 3:35, I hate to keep bashing Richt on his coaching but that decision, or lack of, with Moreno and others tells me that Richt isn’t cutting edge. He is a “reactionary” person vs a “proactive” one. He “responds” to a crisis vs “preventing” one. I know it’s far easier to sit back as we do and criticize and evaluate one after the fact, but his learning curve is over. IMO, he should be at the top of his game in year 11, not starting over. He should anticipate the trends, hell, he should be setting them.

Gary

i have supported Coach Richt since 2001

i was thrilled when we hired him

His recent teams have done nothing to give me any confidence to predict a Georgia win regardless of who we play(CC being the exception)

I will be the first in line to cheer these coaches and players on but if we continue to give games away, we won’t win. That’s on Murray and the others making the mistakes. Murray has played 16 games now. When he saw the DE coming, he should have just taken the sack. Instead he tries to do a miracle, fumbles and it is 6 points and we are down 10.

I need to see the elimination of those kind of plays. That is coaching my friend.

We’re lucky we’re not on PBS looking for a fundraiser to get a new O coordinator. Time to start looking for one since Bobo is going to head up to Ohio State to next season to be their O coordinator under Meyer. Now that’s jsut funny, I don’t care who you are. Git R Dun!!!

JB, CMR played Watts Dantzler, David Andrews and Hunter Long Saturday so he won’t have to say he’s got three freshmen on the OL next year.

Kenarious Gates
Chris Burnette
Dallas Lee
Kolton Houston
Zach DeBell
Xavier Ward
Austin Long

John Theus may get a shot as a true freshman.

SSIGator it is amazing to me that anyone with the arrest record that Florida has had over the past two years has the stupidity to say anything about the Bulldogs. At least we haven’t had a player use a dead girls credit card or threaten to kill their girlfriend and he is still on the team.

After noting Vandy’s nastiness Saturday, I’m not looking forward to either Tennessee trip next month.

And after that embarrassing loss, Nutt will have his boys foaming at the mouth. I’d take a 6-3 win right now.

Not too long ago, Dawg fans didn’t just want wins, but “style-point” wins for the polls. These days, I seldom look at the rankings.

Dawginlex, I normally agree with your analysis except for this statement “D didn’t lose the first 2 games did they?” .. the D stunk up the joint, especially in the secondary during the BSU game. They didn’t lose the USCe game at all but Kellen Moore did what he wanted, when he wanted with sub-par receivers against our d-backs.

Tampa

Think about it. The D stopped BSU the first 3 times they had the ball. The offense did nothing.

If our offense could have held the ball and gotten some points, the D would have been more rested, had fewer snaps and the pressure on BSU would have been raised.

It is just my opinion but the offense has let the defense down this year in both losses

A shut out with our defense is stretching is a bit. I hope you’re right but, I suspect you are not. I’ve been to the last two UGA games at Ole Miss and neither panned out the way most people thought. In fact a couple of years ago we were very Lucky to come away with a win. Nutt has lost it but he can surprise very often when he’s looked over

CMR is protecting one of his best pass catchers (whom he should utilize more), but I’d not mind seeing Charles getting some snaps at DE or OLB. IF we can avoid a slew of turnovers & execute the basics (blocking & tackling), we should get thru the “New Miss Conformists” & MSU.

I know it is a stretch to think shutout.

Nutt is desperate but he has no QB and his best RB I think is till hurt and their OL is horrible.

Their d is capable but I’m hoping Murray can light them up and it gets out of hand and we blow them out.

Nutt always loses a couple he isn’t suppose to and wins 1 or 2 he isn’t suppose to. Ole Miss svcks, really but they will still beat someone. I just hope it isn’t us. They probably won’t have 3-4 wins this year but a couple of them will come against decent teams. I think Nutt is toast and should be. His track record has begun to follow him to Oxford

I hate these noon kickoffs. Those and our pitiful scheduling have made me strongly consider dropping my tickets after 37 years. More than a little bad football hasnt stopped me from getting season tickets for 37 years..but our new pathetic scheduling philosophy combined with our reduced stature might just do it for me next year…Here we are again this year stuck with 12 or 1220 kickoffs because we have a bad schedule and bad record.. Last yr we had only one game with late kickoff.. This yr looks the same and….

Has anyone looked at the home schedule for next year? read it and shake your head in disbelief. It is the most pathetic ,sorriest, unattractive home schedule I can remember in 37 years of ga football. I cannot believe our new philosophy is now annually 2 good home games and 5 bad ones..see below

Sept 2012 home games

Buffalo/ Florida Atlantic/ Vandy…that is pathetic

Oct only one home game..Tenn

Nov Ole Miss/ Ga Southern/ Ga Tech pathetic Chap 2

That is 7 home games, 5 of which I wouldn’t watch if they were in my back yard. Absolutely pathetic , embarrassing schedule. Somebody look at that schedule and find me a home game besides Tech that starts later than 1220. It isnt there. 5 crappy games prob 6 early starts.

I know we add Clemson for one hpme game in 2014, and that Bama Ark and LSU come once every 5 years..even adding those in ..that is less than half of the games in the next 5 years are against quality opponents. By my count, we have 16 home games in the next 5 years against either Tenn, SC, Tech, Aub, (2 or 3 games with each) and LSu, Ark, Ala. and Clem (1 each).

Every other game , a total of 19 out of the 35 games,is either against terrible non conf competition like Coastal Carolina, or Ga Southern, or its Vandy Ky Ole Miss or Miss State.

With schedules like that, we better be winning big or the sellouts are not going to happen. And at last check, we weren’t winning big.

Mobile Dawg:

Completely agree. Mason needs some meaninfgul reps. That would be one advantage to having an interim coaching staff. Would love to see him get one first half series in just about every game so that next year we have a viable backup and competition. The same is true for the two Freshman OL.

I’m not saying pull Murray, give Mason at least 1 of the 12 series in each game and not just mop up duty.

You are kidding, right? You are either very young or just started following UGA football and the coaching fiasco in place there. If Richt didn’t read them a bedtime story and tuck them in at night I don’t know how they would find their way back to the dorm. Well, actually some of them don’t based on the previous years arrest rate.

Thank you for proving my point. Find me a head coach who has handed out more suspensions than Richt. If he were so buddy buddy wouldn’t he let the arrests slide?

If anyone thinks that Ole Houston Nutts will not throw anything and everything at UGA this weekend, please think again. He is pulling the redshirt off of up to a dozen players and pretty much is scrapping his entire offensive plan. It may take UGA a series or two just to get an understanding of what he is doing, but as weak as Ole Miss is this should be a second half walk over, however playing on the road in the SEC is always much tougher than we think.

I would not be suprised that Nutt runs an entirely different offense this weekend in front of his home crowd.

For those of you who have never been to the grove at Ole Miss, you must visit and enjoy. One of the finest atmospheres for college football you will ever attend for a pre game. One major bonus is the women. Coeds, hot moms, cheerleaders, grad students, the women are hot. Enjoy!

For those of you expertly breaking down the offense and defense of UGA, and which unit is the best/worst and which has done it’s job or not…I think you are forgetting one important thing – the oppenent.

UGA’s offense and defense isn’t out on the field by itself. Most turnovers can be looked at two ways…forced or not…meaning that the opposing team just might have something to do with whether UGA looks good or not.

Actually, all you statisticians are too generous when you say the offense gave up 21. When Culver returned that fumble the the 5 and then USC scores, I wouldn’t charge the defense with giving up that 7 points. To be fair, offense gave up three TD’s, and then the punt team, well made me want to eat my gun.

Just read the press conference at Ole Miss with AD Pete Boone appearing at Coach Nutt’s weekly press conference and he gave him the ” support” statement and that he expects the coaches and players to look at themselves and do more. Could you do any less losing to Vandy? And almost getting shut out?

By the way, after Pitt and Syracuse joined the ACC, it left a door wide open for FSU to walk. Call me foolish, but now the ACC is a full blown Basketball conference first and many many folks at FSU want to get out while they can. One knows personally that the FSU Athletic board met Saturday morning and they discussed several options and one high on the list was joining the SEC if they could get approval from the UF legistlators in Tallahassee. The wheels are turning.
