Notebook: Isaiah Crowell’s ribs, Orson Charles on D and Dogs vs. Dogs on FSN

Cleaning out the notebook heading into Ole Miss week. . . .

Crowell’s ribs

Georgia coach Mark Richt indicated that tailback Isaiah Crowell aggravated his injured ribs against Coastal Carolina this past Saturday because he didn’t wear the special rib protection padding sports medicine director Ron Courson laid out for him. Crowell admits he hurt his ribs but that it wasn’t from a hit.

“I didn’t get hit on them this time,” said Crowell, who was initially injured in the first half of the South Carolin game. “I just twisted the wrong way. I hurt the myself, really. So I’ll have to go to treatment and stuff and get them worked on. But I’ll be ready for next week.”

Asked about Crowell in his postgame press conference, Richt said: “He didn’t wear his rib protectors to start the game and he probably should have. That’s what freshmen do. I’m sure he felt good by the end of the week and didn’t feel like he needed them.”

Update: Crowell is expected to wear rib protection for the Ole Miss game.

Orson Charles denied defensive debut

If Orson Charles and Todd Grantham had their way, the junior tight end would have played some defense late in the Coastal Carolina game. Charles somehow convinced the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator to let him have a crack at that side of the ball should the opportunity arise, which it did in the 59-0 win this past Saturday. But Grantham told him to get an OK from Richt and Charles was summarily denied.

“Before Todd did it, he asked me could he do it, and I said, ‘No.’ There’s no way,” Richt said. “He was mad at me, but I said, ‘Look, Coach Grantham kept his promise to you; I made him break it.’ But Todd was ready and willing and able to put him in there. I said, ‘No way.’”

Dogs vs. Dogs get noon start

The Oct. 1 Georgia-Mississippi State game was picked up by television on Monday and slated for a noon start. It will be broadcast by the Fox Sports Network (FSN).

It will mark Georgia’s first appearance on FSN this season. The Bulldogs have appeared on FSN six times overall and are 4-2 when playing on the network.

Georgia got passed over by Alabama at Florida, Auburn at South Carolina and Arkansas-Texas A&M, all of which are being considered for a CBS 3:30 p.m./8 p.m. doubleheader

where would Orson Charles play? DE? Outside linebacker? I would like to see him in a Boss Bailey roll on FG attempts.

Grantham is the real deal

Richt and Bobo should follow his lead

Grantham has that look all the time of being angry, never satisfied

We need more of that

his kids are responding and getting better.

D will be getting better every week

D didn’t lose the first 2 games did they?

Agree Lex… The O was the problem in the first 2 games.. The D gave up 24 vs SC & vs BSU AM was horrible.. Coach needs to sit AM sometimes when he’s ’struggling’… The only way any starter sits is if he’s injured.. Once announced a starter (even if they’re a FR or SO) they cannot lose their job…

Another lesson not learned by the Freshman, if the coach calls you out, whether you’re right or wrong you don’t challenge him, especially in the media. Crowell should have just apologized. Just another “small” example of who’s “not” in charge in Athens. And yes, we pick up on all of it.

‘O’ the problem versus Carolina??? I know they made mistakes (turnovers), but they did score 40+! Are you blaming the INTs and fumbles on Bobo?

Fla,AU will be prime time. Maybe Tech. And Hutson, you should of gone to UAB or Garner Webb and been a star. Once Richt has a starter, it’s hell getting them unseated. Performance is only part of it.
Ask Joe T III at QB. He was gonna start regardless of who else we had.

It is the job of the offense to either score or to punt the ball.

not to give up points

We gave SC 21 points

That is on the offense

@mobile dawg what article are you reading? When did crowell challenge richt? it seems to me that both guys were asked about the injury and they both answered the question. I will read both comments again but it looks like you are trying to make something out of nothing. You must have been one of the people who had those “inside sources” that said crowell was on the fast track to become a bust.

@DawginLex, I know its easy and popular to diss Richt and Bobo, but its hard for me to unerstand how you think Grantham is doing such a great job when they gave up 45 points to SC and 35 to Boise State. I thought the offense did a pretty good job moving the ball and the defense has a lot of word to do on 3rd down. How bout watching the games?

“That’s what freshmen do”

No, that is what the freshman that Richt recruits do. I guess Richt will never learn that being buddies with the players does not work in the long run.

And that is what is wrong with coach Richt. He doesnt like change EVEN IF it is good change. If Richt would pull AM out when hes struggling(again and again) and settle him down, we maybe 2-1 right now. I would have made a difference. His loyalty to whoever will be his down fall and the result will be more losses for our team.

I with DawginLex. Grantham is the only one who seems to have any passion. @Gary, they really only gave up 17 in the Carolina game. The rest were on turnovers and fake punt.

@gary I thought I was the only person a little confused about the criticism the offensive staff is getting. The team needs to improve in all phases of the game but after 3 games you cant point fingers at the offense and turn your head to the points and yards the defense is giving up.

Charles is too important to the offensive side of the ball to play half a dozen snaps on defense. Sometimes we throw him up to 3 passes in a single game, so it is out of the question!

I’ve never said anything as a matter of speculation Cmon, and I always paraphrase my “opinion’ with “IMO”. This isn’t my opinion, I read the first three paragraphs of Chip’s blog, this page, and read conflicting opinions of what happened, one by the HC, the other by the Freshman. I stand by what I said, when the coach lays out a rib protector, you wear it, or clear it with the coach. Who’s appears to be in charge I might ask again? Now in my honest opinion you’re one of the ones who’s allowed this program to degrade to the level we’re now in by tolerating the IMO, lack of leadership by our HC.

As for IC, I’ve only had praise for him ability wise. I did say he needed to be somewhat more humble prior to the USC game as far as his saying “people will be comparing him and Lattimore”. Oh and I did say I thought he should get a haircut. If anyone’s trying to make something out of nothing, I speculate it would be you.

Play Hutson Mason more !! let Murray roll out and scramble … you’ll open things up… get 1st downs…. move the ball and keep defenses honest… play Mason if Murray gets hurt… No More seniority system.. shake ‘em up.. you’re fighting for your job.. but more important.. lt these kids want to be winners !!! Let ‘em go for it !!!!!

Mark – I’m curious, upon what are you basing your beliefs that Richt is buddies with the players?

You are kidding, right? You are either very young or just started following UGA football and the coaching fiasco in place there. If Richt didn’t read them a bedtime story and tuck them in at night I don’t know how they would find their way back to the dorm. Well, actually some of them don’t based on the previous years arrest rate.

Let not get giddy just yet. We racked up 600 yards vs North Texas and the Dawgs could have scored 100 points vs Coastal Carolina. Big Boy Football starts this week. We are somewhat unstable at quarterback and boy do we miss Julio.

DawginLex

the defense is better than last year.

The offense has done the following:

Stunk up the GA Dome
Given SC 21 points directly and 7 more indirectly(fumble return to 5)
Scored 42 versus Sc
scored 59 versus a HS team

The offense has turned the ball over and that is a key part to a successful offense-no turnovers.

They get a C from me

42 points versus SC was great but in my book they netted 14 because they gave 28 back

Got you Chip, I will store that in memory. I don’t mind being called out when I’m wrong. I do still stand by my opinion that Crowell should have cleared not wearing the rib protector if in fact he didn’t.

Destin Dawg, as a regular on here, you know Richt will never do that. In his defense, he was trying to win those first two, and to throw a untested QB in the mix would be greatly second guessed. But, I would love to See Mason get a series or two to see more of what he brings.

@GeoffDawg, the offense may have given up 21, but they still managed to score 42 anyway. What’s your point? It’s ok for the defense not to get the job done if the offense makes a mistake?

I saw Lemay at Fan Day. He doesn’t have the size i thought he did. He appears to be about 6′1″ and about 180 LBS. Was not cut at all. I think redshirting him was the right call

Makes for a tough thing next year though.

I could see Mason redshirting in 2012 if Lemay is the future.

Is there a team in the country with a softer conference schedule? Good Lord No wonder the Homers are bragging ! Not playing 1 SEC team that is in an up year. That being said all the more reason to bow the chest after beating a school where you paid for a win !
